In the best of all worlds the temperature would always be 78 degrees, the wind would be at our backs, and no emergencies would rise. Since it is a slightly imperfect world we live in, we should be prepared for whatever happens.

Off The Hook Jeremiah Williams

Ok, this guy is a character, at first sight, he is a low-key humble dude. But then as you listen and observe this likable, slightly crazy, the person emerges. You may have seen Jeremiah on the road. He would be the guy on his road glide with a spear gun! Jeremiah is a scuba diver with a passion for spearing fish. These fish are monsters; barracudas, grouper, tuna, and sheepshead you name it. If it’s tasty he puts it in the boat! In the water he captains a 28-foot Baja, getting him to his favorite diving spots in minutes. His favorite spear gun is made locally. It’s a bona fide spear gun. If you decide to take up the sport get with Jeremiah, and he will gladly show you what’s up. Jeremiah never found the silver spoon he was supposed to be born with. He was, for the most part, raised on the streets. He was raised here in Tampa in a broken home, and like many found the streets to provide whatever he wanted, and what he wanted usually wasn’t the best thing for him. Jeremiah worked here and there earning just enough to not starve, but nowhere near enough to realize a quality life. This road to destruction continued year after year, going from one job to another. One of the jobs he landed was in the automotive windshield business. He worked as an installer for a while then moved on to the next thing. Having nothing to show for his existence and absolutely no inclination as to what the future held for him, his spiral continued. They say some of us have to hit rock bottom to wake up. Guess that’s true. Choosing to no longer be a product of his environment, Jeremiah was done blaming and complaining and he stood up for the first time in his life. A giant was awakening for real! He remembered all he needed to from his job as a windshield installer, and with just a few dollars in his pocket he made a BTR 12 | BORNTORIDE.COM

decision to Go for It! Jeremiah gave up everything from the streets and with his determination and “a higher power” he took his first step. Jeremiah opened Bay Area Auto Glass in February of 2013 and hasn’t looked back. As expected, the beginning was tough, a lot of top ramen from the dollar store and even that was rationed. The business Bay Area Auto Glass has grown sales to two million dollars, and

This road to destruction continued year after year, going from one job to another. One of the jobs he landed was in the automotive windshield business

he hasn’t slowed down yet. He projects doubling that to four million by the end of next year. Bay Area Auto Glass has created many jobs as well as a place for many to shake off the streets. Jeremiah has been a mentor for recovery and the development of oneself. He is hiring even now, so if you are honest and hardworking find his ad in Born To Ride and call him. Jeremiah prides himself on the quality of his team’s workmanship and takes the time to educate his customers of the importance of properly installed quality glass. Most people don’t think twice about the condition of their windshield.

If there is a small crack in the windshield most people don’t give it a second thought. But the glass is designed to deflect debris from the road. A small fracture combined with debris contacting your car at 60-plus miles per hour has a good probability of breaching the glass and entering the cabin of your car. You may be a tough guy and not be bothered by this, but the debris does not discriminate it’s happy to hurt anyone in your car or truck. Auto Glass helps to provide structural integrity in the case of a roll-over accident. Lastly, a visible crack will give your local police enough cause to pull you over, wasting your time or worse if you are riding dirty! These are all things I never thought of. … To give credit where credit is due, it should be said that not only has Jeremiah successfully established a prosperous business against the odds, he also remembers where he came from. He remains humble and gives back to the community in multiple ways. He sponsors a youth football team and is active in helping Florida’s teens avoid the pitfalls of the streets. Jeremiah remembers who and where he was in the past and the struggles of the rocky path. He makes every effort to help kids choose a better path than the one he walked. Jeremiah has defiantly come a long way but in his mind, he is just getting started. If you find yourself walking the wrong path, living the street life or doubting the possibility of building a great life for yourself, just remember two things; Decisions and Actions. If you want your life to change then you must decide to change something in your life. Once you make that decision take action. Don’t just think about it take Huge and Immediate action. Be inspired, stay inspired. Let Jeremiah’s story be evidence that you can do and become what you focus your efforts and energy on. Just decide!

Hey everybody, my name is Wendy LaForce, and we are Stilettos on Steel, Sun Coast District. We’ve got five chapters and we’re waiting for you to join. Some of our members would like to

introduce themselves and tell you what and why they ride. So can you judge a Book by it’s cover? Hi, my name’s Randi. I’m in the fitness business. I’m a personal trainer. I teach yoga and Pilates. And I ride a 2010 Honda Fury. I’m here today supporting lady riders. It’s awesome to see a lot of ladies out on their bikes riding whatever you want to ride. Just get out on two wheels. Hi, I’m Jay Belfy. I am a unit secretary monitor tech at one of the local hospitals. I am a member of the Stilettos on Steel Riding Group, which is one of the best ladies riding groups out there. They’ve done miraculous things for my improvement this year. They support all women riders, and it’s just a great way to get out there. If you ever want to even think about riding your bike, just come see us and we will all back you up and help you out. My bike is a 2016 Ultra Limited. I’ve had it for about a year and I’ve put about 7,000 miles on it, which is a big improvement for me.

Hi, my name’s Stacy, aka Crazy Girl. I’m here supporting the Stilettos, my sisters. I am ex-law enforcement. And currently now working for a plastic surgeon, as I’m retired. This is Jezebel. This is my 2012 Street Glide. Just got her customized, had some more work done and we’re just out enjoying, supporting my sisters. Hi, my name is Lisa. I am a realtor with McPeak Real Estate

Firm out of Brandon, Florida. I’m also known as Sugar Butt while I’m riding one of my three bikes. Here today I rode in my ‘09 Road Glide that was custom done. I’ve got stretch bags with custom paint job. My favorite bike, which I’m not riding today is my Sportster 883. It’s custom done in Tiffany blue with Swarovski Crystals. And I have a 2016 Softail Slim that I do not ride cause it’s not customized yet. I ride with a group of amazing women, SOS, which is Stilettos on Steel. They started in Wisconsin. They brought it over to Florida. I’ve met a bunch of amazing women and I love riding with them every chance I get.

So if you’re interested, please give me a call. My phone number is (727) 557-8624. Or my Facebook, and you can always go to stilettosonsteel.com and click on join us for rides and you will see all of the information about how to join and what you get for your membership. We’ve got our second annual international female ride day out of Pinellas County Saturday May 4. We did one last year. Our first one we had about 70 bikes. It was new to us, but this year our goal is to have 500 bikes. So, this is going to be something super amazing for us. I don’t know, you probably know, you probably don’t, International Female Ride Day happens all over the world on the same day, on May 4th coming up this year. That means every woman rider in the world, they all get together, and they have a ride. I’m really, really excited, ‘cause we want 500 bikes and we want you guys to be part of that.

Get ready for the most unbelievable “Motorcycle Country Club” which will offer a serious kick-ass customer experience! Bert’s Barracuda new Harley-Davidson dealership on 49th Street in Clearwater will be one of the most technology-advanced, entertaining, dynamic and engaging dealerships you will set foot in. Start by riding through the entrance using “Bert’s Burnout Boulevard”; a drag racing light and laser technology-equipped alley where you will be able to burnout that old tire while being filmed live through your personal social media as well as other publicly broadcasted channels. Then, a state-of-the-art service building where you can ride your bike in like a badass with direct access to your technician and the showroom. The showroom will be equipped with free Wi-Fi, free charging stations, and they will serve free beer as well as other items. A riding academy is set up with the best pricing in Florida. If you ask for Bert and you are a woman, military personnel or, a first responder, the class is free. Yes. Free! So long as you ask for Bert! Be sure to ask for Bert! If you don’t there is no free class. Ask for Bert! Want more? Ok! How about a massive BTR 50 | BORNTORIDE.COM

pavilion called “Bert’s Back Porch” for movies and live bands? How about if I told you the pavilion will be designed for riders to go in and out of the venue riding their bike red-carpet-celebrity style? I decided to call it “Bert’s Black Carpet.” We will see if that name sticks. Let’s not forget food and drinks in a really nice restaurant equipped with a back patio. No big deal? Well, how about if I told you gambling is currently part of the planning? Occasionally, free manicures, pedicures, and hairstyling events ladies? Motorcycles-only gas station with super cheap below market value pricing? High-performance gas will be on site. Don’t get ideas. Cheap gas will be strictly for bikes only. No exceptions. Bert is extremely thankful for our military personnel, their service as well as their sacrifices. Therefore, a huge memorial representing all military branches with their emblem will be displayed. The memorial will be adorned with an antique bike, spotlights shooting up in the sky twin-tower style. Sponsorship opportunities will be launched and available on Memorial Day. Additionally, Bert is scheduled to petition Pinellas’ city council May 2, 2019, to get a permit for a 200’ high flag pole that will be

used to display our Nation’s beloved flag. My understanding is that a HOG Chapter is planning to ride to the courthouse for the occasion. All are welcome, but this needs to be a peaceful event if you plan on being there. Call the dealership for details on the ride. I met Bert one-on-one for a couple hours, and then I met his staff for a solid hour the next day. A few days later I met with Bert again, Bert tells me he puts a lot of value on a handshake and eye contact. Of all his accomplishments, and believe me he has a long list, Bert’s most important passion is his people and serving them as well as the community. Heck, last year he supported over 150 charities. In the ~4 hours I spent with him there is one topic which clearly drew a load of evident emotions in his demeanor; his staff, the biker community, and the importance of selflessness with them all. Bert does not need to work, and he does not need these dealerships. These dealerships are a reward to himself after accomplishing all he could possibly accomplish in the automotive industry. These dealerships as he calls them are a “bucket list” item to him. Toys he can play with and have fun sharing with his friends. Bert has been married to his “bride” as he calls her for well over 30 years. He courted her a full year before she gave him his first date. When I met him, he shared he had just sent her 100 flowers. The man is a

passionate being. A lot of us could use a lesson or two from him in that department. I’ve been watching his progression now since 2015 when he took over the Port Charlotte dealership. This guy has been intriguing me because wherever there is something to do with bike events that appear out-of-thebox or original, Bert’s face is on the scene. He and his staff are packed with energy and vision that will not only benefit his dealerships but the entire biker community, as well as the surrounding businesses I assure you. Dare I say even competing for businesses? Yes! If you can see the

big picture, you will agree and welcome the much needed “Bert’s Era” with all its benefits. So what’s next? Bert and the team are set to have 4 main annual events; #1. St Pete Beach Bike Fest, #2. Bert’s Annual Expo, #3. The Bert & Fran Biker Jam with biker’s strongest advocate and sweetheart Fran Haasch and her husband Rhett of the Fran Haasch Law Group for Labor Day and #4. Is in the works. The Bert & Fran Biker Jam will start with the first day being for sports bikes then the second day for traditional cruiser bikers and third day will be for the Latino

biker community. All in all, Bert and his team understand a critical variable; people buy into “brand” yes, but they want “experience.” Go the extra mile to give experience over and above your brand serving others then watch things grow. I can’t wait to see everything materialize! Thank you, Bert and Bert’s team, for inspiring me. Thank you for the shirt you gave my little boy and for the tour you gave him. Made his day and to me, that is an experience that mattered most. I look forward to seeing you again and again. Night Train, DEUT 6:5

Route 66--the fabled ribbon of asphalt and concrete still winds its way across the country from Chicago to L.A. And it has also wound its way into the very soul of America. Although superseded in the 1970s by the Interstate freeways, the magic and mystic of the Mother Road has never died. Within the pages of the superbly illustrated book is a colorful illustrated history of the road and its landmarks of the famed RT 66. Put that together with Jim Bush’s story of devotion and passion as he has dedicated a true epic of ink to the legendary RT 66 on his body to show tribute for all to see. We at Born to Ride are thankful and excited to tell both sides of the story. ABOUT THE BOOK: It started in the heartland and originally ended in Los Angeles (not, contrary to myth, at the ocean). It carried truckers crossing the country, Okies fleeing the Dust Bowl, vacationers seeking the sun. It was Americas Main Street, the Mother Road, the Will Rogers Highway, and, at its dangerous curves, Bloody 66. Get your kicks on Route 66 with this wonderfully illustrated tribute to the best-loved highway in this car-loving nation. Michael Witzel shares his expertise and wealth of personal, archive, collector, and contributing photographer images in these pages, offering a nostalgic tour of the charms and oddities of this road through American cultural history. Starting in Chicago and running to Santa Monica, this book

K

highlights the sights along the highway with historic and current photos in then-and-now pairings, and includes Route 66 postcards, road signs, trinkets, maps, brochures, and advertisements. Here we see Route 66 as it was in its heyday and as it is now, the neon glamour of yesterday versus the ghost towns of today. Witzel and his wife, Gyvel Young-Witzel, recount the highways history, its role in popular culture, and its demise, as well as the individual stories of famous sights. Several profiles of those with close ties to the Mother Road, including the woman who played Ruthie Joad in the The Grapes of Wrath film, are included. ABOUT THE AUTHORS: Michael Witzel and Gyvel Young Witzel are some of the best known American car culture historians. Michael is the author of Route 66 Remembered as well as a dozen other pop culture histories, including with co-author Gyvel, Soda Pop! and The Sparkling Story of Coca-Cola. About one minute into listening to Jim Bush’s bike and tattoo story I knew it traveled beyond the norm, if norm is ever used in the world of tattooing and custom bikes. The Bolingbrook, Illinois resident is a walking and talking monument for a major slice of American culture. He’s covered, figuratively speaking, with nearly 2,500 miles of ink stretching from Chicago to Los Angeles. To be specific, he’s paved in the history of the famous Route 66. Route 66 is America’s first

transcontinental roadway and the subject of countless stories, books, and songs -- not forgetting that famous 1960s TV show of the same name. Before we head down that road, a background check on Jim reveals that while he’s an engineer by training he’s an expert in “Loss Prevention” for commercial and industrial Fortune 500 companies. He adds, “It’s a career that pretty much will put you to sleep. It involves engineering work for an

insurance company that insures factories against business interruption.” Jim says its best to leave that explanation as it stands without delving further, and I agreed! My interest was his ink and bike story. The ink motoring down his arms is an incredible profusion of indelible images. It all started years ago when Jim decided to get his first tat, something patriotic. “I was just going to get a little American eagle and that was going to be it.” He began researching

U.S. Route 66 (also known as the Will Rogers Highway, “Main Street of America” or the “Mother Road”)

through all the images but here’s some highlights. On Jim’s left arm there’s a turquoise ’55 Chevy with a license plate that reads 2448 that commemorates Route 66’s total mileage. The Standard Oil gas station attendant on his right arm is the image of his grandfather. “That filling station opened in the early 1950s on Route 66. It’s still there, owned by my family. My grandfather’s sons still work there with my cousins.” And if you look carefully you’ll find a Ferris wheel on Chicago’s Navy pier. Walking up to that Ferris wheel, Larry has drawn the figures of Jim, his wife, and his youngest son. Jim’s art is amazing but Jim also has an award show winning Black Pan, but that is another story for a future issue. Do you have a memory of Route 66? Tell us about your Route 66 story. Spyke & Mike

Life is good and even better when you can share a holiday with your peeps. That’s what I’m going to do this Easter, my BTR friends. Like last year, Mike will make me feel right at home being the Mother Hen that I am by inviting a few kith and kin over for a party. While they will be busy doing circles and laying little (and a few big) eggs around me, I’ll just hang out in my basket waiting for dinner to be served. Mike even called upon a chocolate brother of mine to keep me company in my nest until the heat of the day started to turn him into a cross-eyed gooey mess. Before his big meltdown, he was telling me how hollow he felt inside. Let’s hope it’s cooler this year. Then I was able to join the party, per se, and pop out a golden one, just ‘cause I can. Mike interjects, “Well Spyke, I had a joke about those eggs, but it’s not all cracked up as I’d like it to be. I did catch one egg asking another egg; did you hear any good yolks today?” I just covered my head with one wing and groaned. Mike continues, “Instead, I will tell you that those chick-a-Dee droppings, big and small, made for some tasty chocolate deviled eggs! They would’ve been a big hit in Daytona this year. The Cackleberry Campground was a great place to stay, but the food was at best carnival quality. We made new friends and you had a blast with the Cackleberry rooster. Well, actually the

real roosters wouldn’t play with you, but the guy in the rooster suit did while jamming with your friends in the Straitjacketsmile band. What an entertaining show you two put on.” I cackle, ‘Remember Friday night watching another band and you pointed out a man sliding down in his chair and under the table in front of us. The woman appeared remarkably unconcerned, but the waitress, who had just come over to take their order, felt like she ought to mention something. ‘Excuse me,’ we heard her saying, ‘I think your husband just slid under the table.’ Then we couldn’t believe what the woman said to her; ‘No, my husband is walking up behind you now.’ Mike turned to me and said, “Bikers will do the stupidest things to talk to a woman. Which explains why some die in the strangest ways.” He says to me, “Do you remember the last Saturday of Bike Week when we were sitting at the inside bar of the Cabbage Patch and I asked for a Coke. Then Kevin, who rode six hours to get there, showed up behind us and said, ‘I’ll take the same, but could I please have a clean glass?’ It took that barmaid 15 minutes to come back with two glasses and when she did, I can’t believe what she said: OK, which one of you asked for the clean glass?” I cackle, ‘Mike, seems like we’re always making memorable moments in Daytona. A

few bad ones but mostly good ones. There were so many people who approached us and asked if I was the ‘original Spyke’? They all wanted to hear of how I was reunited with you three years ago after being stolen.’ Mike replies, “Yeah Spyke, your colorful past precedes you and I never grow tired of telling that story. Speaking of stories, Ron told me that you’re gaining a following from around the country. I guess showing up at Everywhere Eddy and Luscious Lynne’s live radio show Tuesday night at the River’s Edge was a good thing. Those two have got it all going on there! The Rumble on the River was off the chain and you spent a lot of time making some wonderful memories for those kids with Down Syndrome that Saturday! I raise my head proudly and squawk, ‘We do a lot for many people, but when we can make kids who are less fortunate smile, laugh, and go home with priceless Kodak Moments that will last forever, life is REALLY GOOD.’ Mike wipes a small tear from his eye and says, “I think I can speak for both of us by saying, it’s just what we do and probably the only reason we’re still here on this rock. Finish your story so I can get your wings in the wind, my knees in the breeze, and the Fat Bird 2’s wheels rolling down the road. We’ve got miles to cover and smiles to create!” SPYKE
