HONORING THEIR COURAGE A June is here and let’s not forget Dad. Father’s Day is a day honoring fathers, celebrated on various days in many places around the world. It compliments Mother’s Day. Happy Father’s Day to all the father’s reading this ad and Happy Father’s Day to all the mother’s reading this if you are a sole parent, mom and a dad of the family. Grandfathers, step-dads, uncles, brothers and sisters, you all deserve to be noted for what you do to be a figure in a child’s life. If dads not there someone who steps in as a fatherly figure. As the originator we have only one father but it’s up to life to keep it all together, life, family, growing up in a household that’s strong and loving. Happy Father’s Day to my dad! A Marine and NYC Police Officer for 28 years. Thank you for everything you’ve done for me in my life. I admire you for who you are and how you always provided for the family. I love the way you loved your grandchildren and I’m proud they loved you back! To anyone reading this, call your dad and tell him Happy Father’s Day. If you’re not speaking, now is the time to start speaking to your father again.

In Loving Memory Albert Galletti April 10-1928 October 9-2016

Ron Galletti BTR 6 | BORNTORIDE.COM

My Uncle “Gee” was my dad’s father figure in his life for many years because his father worked many hours. He came from Italy and worked with marble but then later became ill and couldn’t do much with my dad. That’s when Uncle “Gee” stepped in and helped my dad in life as a father figure. So in this month of June, as a special Father’s Day tribute, we would like to honor my Uncle “Gee” Fidel Galletti who was a real WWII war hero pilot who flew B-17s. Most of all, he was my dad’s hero. This story is courtesy of The 390th Memorial Museum and my cousin, Marie Galletti Mitchell. Ron Galletti As Marie Galletti Mitchell and I corresponded regarding her story in the Sq. J, I found myself reflecting on how I enjoy talking with and writing to our descendants. They are special people … people who realize the importance of what our 390th did during WWII. Allow me to quote from one of Marie’s letters: “What a group of good-looking, virile young men in Dad’s crew! Dad is first on the left in the front row. Laverne Dillow was killed in action. What a waste of life it was for him to have died so young! When Dillow went missing, his mother wrote to my mother to ask for news of her son. My mother has kept that letter in her wartime scrapbook ever since. Now that I’ve gotten older (age 61), I realize how many years and how many of life’s chapters young men like Dillow have missed. So true…and today we honor those living and we memorialize those who have passed on to their reward. Heroes all ... and we hope that this story adds yet another chapter to their lives … let it be so!

THE WARSAW AIRDROP OF 1944

On September 1, 1939, Nazi tanks rolled into Poland and started World War II. By September 18, 1944, the Polish resistance, which had bravely fought Hitler’s military might for five long years, was trapped in Warsaw with food, ammunition and other supplies running dangerously low. The Poles called upon the Allies to provide supplies by airdrop. The Allies agreed, and airmen of the 390th, along with the 95th and 100th, were called upon to replenish the patriots of Warsaw with the supplies they desperately needed. There was a catch, however. Warsaw is situated west of the Vistula River from Russia, and the Soviets had an unstated plan: Joseph Stalin wanted to weaken Poland in order that Russia could add this formerly sovereign nation to its empire once WWII was over. So while Stalin orally agreed to the Polish Airdrop, he kept delaying it by refusing to allow Allied planes to land on Soviet soil. (At that time, B-17s could not carry enough fuel to fly from England to Poland round trip.) Meanwhile, the Poles were getting weaker, and thousands died fighting Nazi soldiers on the streets of Warsaw. Finally, in September

1944, Stalin relented, giving the Allies permission to land about one hundred B-17s at some makeshift airfields in Russia. On September 18, 1944, my father, First Lieutenant Fidel Galletti, along with his crew of eight men, climbed into their Flying Fortress to complete their 23rd mission of WWII. These airmen would fly for 10 hours that day to provide the Poles with the supplies they desperately needed. My father’s log for that day reads, “We were to drop supplies to the Polish partisans holding parts of the city. Load was 10 containers and 2,800 gallons topped off. Bombing altitude was to be 14,000 feet. We ran into weather about 50 miles west of target and did several 360s trying to get over it. Colonel Tuesdale [command pilot of the lead plane] gave up trying to get on top and decided to go under as the base of clouds was at 12,000 feet. We got to the IP [Initial Point] and started on the run when fighters hit us. We were flying 565 #2 in the high of the high and out of position as they hit us. They came out of the clouds, and the tail, waist and ball opened up on them. Nine of them attacked from six o’clock level, and Rogers [tailgunner] had the best shot at them. He got the fourth coming in. Two 20 mm shells hit in the cockpit alongside of Spencer [co-pilot], and the oxygen started burning.” Behind the pilot and co-pilot were two oxygen tanks. Flak from the German ammunition pierced both tanks, setting the highly volatile gas into a blaze which quickly spread throughout the cabin. The co-pilot, William Spencer, found himself sitting next to a three-foot hole in the side of the plane, with oxygen burning all around him. His only option was to jump from his seat, through the hatch and into the nose. Before he leapt from the cockpit, he used the interphone to order the crew to bail out. At the same time, my father pulled away from the formation so that his plane, if it went out of control, would not bring down any other B-17s. He then set up the autopilot and hit the alarm bell. Both my father and the co-pilot were unaware that the fire had eaten through the communication lines, rendering it impossible for the crew to hear the orders to bail out of the crippled aircraft. Meanwhile, the interior of the airplane continued to burn, and the plane was filling with smoke. The airmen, while still able to breathe through oxygen masks, were unable to see through the dense smoke. The crew would have to act quickly if they were to save their lives and those of the Polish people they had flown so far to help. Top Turret Gunner Eduard H. Daly, reacting quickly to a five-foot hole and a fire in the waist of the plane,

AND SACRIFICE, HAPPY FATHER’S DAY

Pilot-Fidel Galletti grabbed a fire extinguisher, put out the fire in the rear of the cockpit, then passed the fire extinguisher to my father. My father worked on putting out the fire up front, all the while knowing that if any flak were to nick the nearby primer fuel line, the plane would explode. The primer, next to the punctured oxygen tanks, was constantly charged with gasoline. Whenever fighter planes and ground antiaircraft artillery hit a plane, shrapnel can boomerang around inside the aircraft and hit anything or anybody in it, including, of course, the primer line. Fortunately, once the fires were extinguished, the worst was over. The primer was never nicked, and no one but the pilot sustained even minor wounds. However, danger still threatened the aircraft and its crew. The right tail elevator, necessary to stabilize the aircraft, had been almost torn off, and the cables to the tail section were nearly severed. One of the duties of a pilot is to keep his plane stable, but the damaged tail elevator pulled against my father, physically moving him back and forth as he tried to control the aircraft. In effect, the damaged tail was working against him for control of the plane. In addition, my father was concerned that the torn tail cables, which had been shredded into wires, would get caught in the pulleys through which they threaded on their way from the control stick to the tail. Fortunately, this was not the case and finally, almost miraculously, after what must have seemed like hours of German attack, the Flying Fortress set down as scheduled on an improvised landing field in Mirograd, Russia. In spite of fire and the damage to the plane, bombardier Harry Evje had been able to drop the supplies on target, thus fulfilling mission #23 of my father’s crew: to assist the Polish dissidents in resisting the Nazi army. In August 2005, a CNN documentary, “Warsaw Rising,” filmed from Warsaw during the airdrop, shows the B-17s approaching the city. They looked so heroic as they flew in to the rescue! In the words of narrator David Ensor,

“Suddenly, in the sky – a miracle!” In the same documentary, Nina Januszowska Thiessen, a Polish underground courier, recalls of the airdrop: That was the most wonderful picture, when the American planes came. They were very, very high, so you didn’t see anything; you just heard the mmmm [sounds] of the heavy bombers. Then, all of a sudden, there was –like flowers. The parachutes were multi-colored, you know. And those multicolored flowers brought hope that Warsaw would live another day. Over 2,500 years ago, Herodutus, “The Father of Western History,” declared that the purpose of written history was to memorialize glorious deeds. The Polish Airdrop of 1944 is one of modern history’s glorious deeds. America can be proud that the crew of B-17 #565, along with hundreds of other young American airmen, bravely risked their lives to take part in this gallant operation.

While on a family trip to Austria two years ago, Fran spotted an Almhütte and commented to her father Werner how she would adore a hut like this in her back yard. An Almhütte is an Alpine hut that is found in Austria, Switzerland, and Germany. It’s commonly used for animals grazing in the wild to seek shelter from weather. It has a peaked roof with an approximate 4-foot overhang on the sides. It’s common in Germany to see a huge boulder on the roof to hold the roof down during windy conditions. You see, Fran has a love for all animals; she has goats, cows, donkeys, and dogs … they all have names and personalities. Fran could only imagine how her animals would benefit from such a structure. Werner saw Fran’s imagination going wild. He found some photos and his mind began working on the plan. Werner was going to build Fran her animal hut. After returning to the States, Werner began the design on paper; soliciting help from a family friend Edward Fitzpatrick and his grandson Henry, the project was underway. He made a list of materials needed, which included properly treated cedar from Chiefland, FL. He had a wood burned “Almhütte” sign made to hang over the door which has an image of a goat and a cow. There are four layers to the roof; the inside layer made of small tree logs to give it an authentic rustic ceiling when you look up once inside. The outside has wood shingles. And yes, the boulder is going to be mounted on the

roof to replicate the authentic Almhütte. It’s all in the details. But there are two extra special touches that are going on Fran’s Almhütte to complete the project. One is a masterpiece work of metal that Werner twisted himself by hand in 1957 while completing his apprenticeship in Germany as a metal worker. It adds the perfect Alpine look to the Almhütte window and comes from the heart. The other special touch is slightly difficult to explain. When Fran was able to open her first law office, she chose a site in Palm Harbor, FL. The property had an existing small building and next to it a unique historic free standing door with old rusty hinges and a door knocker. Image just a door standing there alone. Werner could never have been so proud to see his daughter break ground on that site and grow her own business into what it is today. He kept that old rusty hardware from the demolished door and has been polishing it diligently to place on the Almhütte. For Werner, this special Almhütte is a one-of-a-kind for a one-ofa-kind daughter. It signifies where they both came from and where they are today. There have been proposals from others for a similar build, but Werner declines and explains he will be the one to complete the task for his daughter who has become a wife, mother, business woman, and philanthropist. He is proud of her accomplishments and wants to create an authentic Almhütte for his Francoise.

GENERATION TO GENERATION In

a house which becomes a home, one hands down and another takes up the heritage of mind and heart, laughter and tears, musings and deeds. Love, like a carefully loaded ship, crosses the gulf between the generations. Therefore, we do not neglect the ceremonies of our passage: when we wed, when we die, and when we are blessed with a child; When we depart and when we return; When we plant and when we harvest. Let us bring up our children. It is not the place of some official to hand to them their heritage. If others impart to our children our knowledge and ideals, they will lose all of us that is wordless and full of wonder. Let us build memories in our children, lest they drag out joyless lives, lest they allow treasures to be lost because they have not been given the keys. We live, not by things, but by the meanings of things. It is needful to transmit the passwords from generation to generation. They say apples don’t fall too far from the tree. Alan Bernard of Santiago Chopper has followed in the footsteps of his forefathers; he is a fourth generation bike builder and rider. Thanks to Alan, Born To Ride is proud to present four generations of bike-building Bernard’s.

Fiddlers Green is the life & soul of Ireland right here in Sunny Florida! Located in Trinity, The Green is the first of many restaurants I will review for Born To Ride over the upcoming years. They are in Pasco County, an area in Florida that has a lot of nice back roads and peaceful surroundings. The words “Irish Pub” are lit up in green neon, cheerfully welcoming,

one of the few bars in the area that has live entertainment on a regular basis. The Proprietors, Michelle and Ian McCarty, have 25 years of restaurant experience and take care in making sure each customer leaves with a full belly & a smile on their faces. Ian is a military veteran originally from California, and he appreciates all who serve our great country! He and Michelle have two teenage boys together & their families dream was to own a restaurant! Fiddlers Green is their dream come true!

The Green’s beautiful bartenders have mastered the art of mixing drinks, serving ice-cold beer while conversating with the patrons so you can stop to get a drink alone after work or with a large group! The Green can house events up to 150 seats with a large stage & dance floor, even an outdoor patio equipped with a fire pit … makes for a nice night out with the wife, husband, coworkers or just the guys! As far as the food, the first choice that comes to my mind is the Guinness

BTR 26 30 | BORNTORIDE.COM

fries! Listed first on the menu, they are a must-have! The best French, technically Irish fries, I have had in my life. As the French would call them poutine, Fiddlers Green dubbed them “Pub fries.” Fries with creamy Guinness infused gravy and creamy mozzarella cheese melted and browned. They start the gravy from a traditional roux, slowly cooked throughout the day. You can also sample the gravy on their BACON wrapped Meatloaf served daily! The Black and Tan onion rings hit the spot; Everywhere Eddy chose those as his favorite. They are cut from large onions and beer battered, hot and cooked to perfection.

“This Sonny’s BBQ has Covered Bike Parking just for you. Support them and thank them” Ron Galletti

He didn’t leave a single crumb behind! Every Irish restaurant has Fish and Chips on the menu, but what sets Fiddlers Green apart is they do not make theirs from Swai or Tilapia. They use North Atlantic Cod, a mild flaky fish that is of a higher quality, beer battered & fried until golden brown. The size of their fish sandwich is equally impressive, overflowing the freshly baked buns ordered daily. On Thursdays, they have a BOGO (buy one get one) fish & chips special! Ron Galletti, the owner of Born To Ride chose the Pub Club, a large triple decker sandwich with real plump juicy chicken breast, crispy bacon, lettuce, tomato and mayo on Texas toast! The quality of the

ingredients was top notch! He was impressed by the chicken breast; he was smiling ear to ear! Michelle, the owner, gave us all a sample of the corned beef and cabbage, which is slow roasted to perfection. I am Irish and can honestly say it was the most tender and flavorful I have tried over the years. No need to cut a piece to taste, the brisket simply fell apart with a fork. There’s no need to wait until St. Patrick’s Day to order this entree. Fiddlers Green has a large, diverse menu that includes many different choices apart from the traditional Irish fare: prime rib salad with blue cheese crumbles, and several appetizers to name a few. They have amazing buffalo & garlic parmesan chicken wings and run a Born To Ride special of one pound boneless over steak fries for only $10, as seen in their ad. Wednesday night they run a .49 Cent Wings Special! Tuesday is their Shepherd’s Pie Lunch Special! No matter the day of the week all of the meals are reasonably priced and come in huge portions. For those out there with a sweet tooth, try the Irish cheesecake, topped with a Guinness and brown sugar reduction sauce & whipped cream. You can even order a root beer float

with a shot of Bailey’s on top! Fiddlers Green is located in Trinity in a large plaza off of Mitchell Road, plenty of bike & vendor parking for events. They have live entertainment on most Fridays & Saturdays. On June 7, Born To Ride will be celebrating first Friday with the band Stormbringer, we hope to see you there!

Women’s World Brown Sugaa and Medusa

Danni Benson started out riding on the back of her boyfriend’s bike. He tended to drink a bit and she realized that riding with him wasn’t safe. She learned to ride her own and bought a 1998 GSXR 600 sport bike. Later she traded it for a Ninja 600 sports bike and dumped the boyfriend. She let a friend ride her bike and she was taking a short ride on his when the road suddenly ended, turning to gravel. With the combination of an unfamiliar bike, gravel and trying to turn quickly she crashed! It took a year to recover from her broken wrist, busted knee and scraped face. Although her home state of Indiana doesn’t require riders to wear a helmet she now does because of this accident. It wasn’t long before Danni was itching for a new bike. Since she’s been riding for over ten years now she’s begun to enjoy longer rides and the open road more than the speed of a sport bike. Without telling any of her friends she began shopping for a cruiser type bike. When she came riding up on her new black Harley-Davidson Softail Slim with her dreadlocks blowing in the wind her friends were stunned! She named the bike Medusa because of the way her hair looks while riding and the way her friends seemed to turn to stone at of her on her new bike. BTRthe 26 sight | BORNTORIDE.COM The longest ride Danni has done solo is from her home in Indianapolis to Cincinnati. She and her ‘old man’ often ride with BTR 38 | BORNTORIDE.COM

the club where they are members, but she also enjoys riding with women’s groups that she connected with online. One of the groups, Unique Queens inspired her biker name “Brown Sugaa.” She also sometimes rides with Divas United on Bikes and Black Girls Ride. Earlier this year Danni and another woman rode from Indianapolis to Memphis where they met up with about 20 other women through the group Black Girls Ride (BGR). From there they road in an escorted ride lead by a Slingshot three-wheel motorcycle, all the way to New Orleans. The scariest part of this ride for Danni was crossing Lake Pontchartrain on the world’s longest bridge! For 8 miles of the 24-mile bridge, you can’t see land in any direction. In NOLA they connected with approximately 200 BGR women who came in groups from other host cities to attend the Essence Festival. Not only were they able to enjoy the sisterhood of other black women motorcyclists but at the annual Essence Festival, known as the ‘party with a purpose,’ they shared a week of empowerment, educational seminars, entertainment, and an Essence Magazine photoshoot. A major highlight was the annual Black Women in Music event where they saw superstars such as Mary J. Blige, Erykah Badu and Janet Jackson. Through riding with various groups to events Danni “Brown Sugaa” and Medusa have connected with women across the country! Myra McElhaney

Two hundred and four miles from home in Tampa, the ride to Saint Augustin, Florida was planned with great anticipation. I taught some history to my children at home. Coincidentally, Saint Augustine was part of the curriculum the very week I was scheduled to go. I told the family to pack their bags because this time around they were going to follow me as I rode to and from this historical destination. Besides, there was no way I could convince my thenwife I was going there for a weekend without giving her an opportunity to enjoy these world-class beaches on the Atlantic Ocean! Founded in 1565, with a population of about 15,000 people, Saint Augustin is the oldest continuously occupied European-established settlement and port in the continental USA. The site served as Florida’s capital until 1824, when it was moved to Tallahassee. This city is a major tourist attraction not only because of the rich architecture but also the magnificent beaches. The plan was to ride up there first and the family would meet me at the local Holiday Inn Express where I could cashin on some loyalty points. Rode on I75 North to Ocala, FL then through the Ocala National Forest into Volusia County and finally towards the East Coast to my final destination. The forecast was 90F and 10% rain up to 3 PM at which point it became 50%. Oh well, I confidently thought … I will

just dodge it as usual … yeah rrrright! All went well up to about 20 miles south of Ocala where I think superhero “Thor” himself wanted to strike down on earth! An ungodly storm pretty much made the traffic stop. I rode on through praying for an overpass so I could take shelter. I stopped and screamed

“All went well up to about 20 miles south of Ocala where I think superhero “Thor” himself wanted to strike down on earth! An ungodly storm pretty much made the traffic stop”

under the overpass then laughed at myself out loud and took a really cool shot of my bike before I left again … in a diminished drizzling rain. Thing is, in Florida, you will notice if your senses are like mine when you ride right after a solid rain storm the fresh emerging lavender-like fragrances from wild vegetation will cause your olfactory sense to be pleasantly overwhelmed. Keep riding in the sun and you will dry-up within minutes. That ride was no exception. I could hear my Night Train rumbling through the quiet Ocala National Park

forest. I just took it all in and traffic was minimal. I had to keep an eye out for the wildlife. Once across this green kingdom, a good refreshing drink at Williams Landing restaurant in the town of Astor was timely. Off I went after hydrating myself on scenic I1 along the ocean to my final destination. Forget finding the hotel I thought! Let’s go sight-seeing. Tons of bikes riding in and out of town were strong indicators this is a hub for bikers who like to get out and ride then come back to a paradise-like environment to relax. And a paradise it is! First thing in sight to my good pleasure was a pretty original biker shop; “Ancient City Cycles” owned by Russ who helped me raise my handlebars a bit as they were too low. My family arrived and we met at the hotel then off to dinner on Anastasia Island. Time to scout the place out, I thought. The next two days were packed with an overload of sensory experiences for the taste buds as well as the eye and sometimes both at once. Seafood to die for. There are restaurants everywhere with a truly European atmosphere especially downtown. Heck! Even Napoleon’s son lived there at one point. One word of advice stick with steel horsepower and don’t get sucked into a horse-buggy ride. They don’t even go into the old city. As for amazing ocean restaurant view, you will be well served. I am thinking here of the Beachcomber Restaurant on A Street in Anastasia Island where you can park your bike, indulge in food, and then ride on the beach or sit and enjoy the view. On the ride back home, I decided to make it a bit different and take some country roads instead of main roads. The family packed and followed me back home taking I1 to 13 then 207 to 19 and 314 westbound back to I75. Boy am I glad we did! Splendid vegetation, hawks, deer, and other forms of wildlife were part of the scenery. Old villages and little towns that reminded me of Mexican architecture. What really struck me was the abundance of campsites available. An old school biker who likes to go at it the old-fashioned way and camp will be pleased with natural spring water campsites along the way, each offering a number of amenities or activities. I do not, however, recommend camping in Florida during July or August! That is unless you have no problem sleeping in a sauna-like environment.

This month Born To Ride reviews the 1971 film “Psychomania.” If you like old British horror films, then this one’s for you. Maybe I should have said horrible old British films. Either way, Psychomania has a lot to like or dislike, depending on your level of intoxication. The film centers around the life of “Tom” who is the leader of a ‘motorcycle gang’ called the Living Dead. Tom and his ‘gang’ BTR 50 | BORNTORIDE.COM

ride authentic period Triumph motorcycles, and meet in a field with several large vertical stones which somewhat resemble Stonehenge. When they gather there, they often discuss what they will do in the particular day, but there is always talk of committing suicide, so they can live forever. Where could they get such an unsavory idea? From Tom’s occultist Mum of course! In a

dream like sequence, Tom has the pleasure of seeing his lovely Mum sign a deal with the Devil to have eternal life. His soul is assumed to be part of the deal, as there is a tot in a basket screaming as Mum signs the deal. All this weirdness is further accelerated by a frog. I dunno? It’s just strange. We’ll get to the Frog—plus stones thing later. On one particular day, Tom and his gang decide to ride through town and wreak havoc on the locals. They ride through a mall square like setting, tipping over shopping carts, baby carriages, and other things until the Bobbies arrive. A chase ensues and most of the members escape the long arm of the law. Tom hell-bent on killing himself rides his motorcycle through a guardrail and into the river. In a strange ritual, Tom is buried sitting upright on his motorcycle near the stones. His gang makes wreaths of flowers and other artifacts, which are buried with him as a guy plays the guitar and sings. Mum’s weird butler buries a frog necklace with him and all the other stuff. Later, a motorist breaks down near the stones, and has the horror of seeing Tom ride his motorcycle out of the grave. He of course is struck by the speeding Triumph and assumed dead. Tom then proceeds to call home from a local public house, and speaks to the butler and his Mum. Later he kills several people from the pub, and escapes into the night. The next day he arrives at the stones where the gang is trying to figure out who stole Tom’s body, and motorcycle. Thinking Tom is the thief, the gang begins questioning him and one of the members sneaks up to stab him in the back. This is where they realize that Tom had really come back from the dead. Seeing how cool it is to be immortal, the rest of the gang sets out to be just like Tom and each one kills him or herself in increasingly more bizarre ways. All succeed but Tom’s girlfriend, who after a failed attempt, really wants to live a normal life. In the end Tom gives her the ultimatum to join him in the ‘living dead.’ While she is deciding what to do with the gun he has handed her, his lovely Mum performs a ritual which turns her into a frog, and the rest of the ‘dead gang’ into stones while she shoots Tom. Sound confusing? Yeah, it does to me too! I guess the moral of the story is: Don’t feel too froggy, cause you might get stoned. …

Spyke & Mike Check out what’s new in our world, my BTR friends. Mike and I have been laying down the miles, cautiously breaking in the new cam on the Fat Bird 2. Since the demise of the Screaming Eagle cam and the installation of a new and improved S&S easy start cam, it has made a world of difference in the way the ole bird kicks over before coming alive. Gone are the days of that first hard crank, backfiring, and overall terrible drag on the starting system that occurs on most big V-twins. Mike interjects, “Now I won’t have to replace the battery every two years or the starter as often, if ever again.” I cackle, ‘Yeah you will dummy ‘cuz you don’t remember to turn the key off after you pull up somewhere and before we walk away from the scoot.’ ‘Speaking of remembering, that reminds me of the time we took a day trip with another couple out to The Castle and Charlotte’s Webb Pub. After having lunch at The Castle, we get all the way back to Charlotte’s Webb Pub for the Gemini party and Mike’s buddy finally figured out his glasses were back there on the table. His wife started giving him a piece of her mind. For 20 minutes she laid into him about how forgetful he was. You just sat there watching and smiling. She then made him pay our bill and the four of us rolled back out to The Castle. The whole time I could see her yelling into his helmet. And you just kept on smiling. They rode past us as we park in front of The Castle. He got off the scoot and started walking by. Then, I can’t believe you had the balls to stop smiling and whisper; “Dude, can you pick up my headband while you’re in there?” It was a damn good thing she didn’t hear you say that.’ “I know Spyke,” Mike replies, “that’s why I just kept on smiling earlier. I’ve stood in his shoes before.” I cackle, ‘I know it’s been a rough day for you, Mike. I saw you get up this morning, put on a BTR shop shirt, and a button fell off. Then you packed your man bag and broke the zipper-pull off. At the gas station you pulled out your credit card and it broke off in the pump. Then you went to put the key in the ignition and broke the

head off. Is that why I haven’t seen you go to the bathroom yet?’ Mike says, “You got that right Spyke. Not sure what’s going to happen next, but it’s obviously not a good day to play the lottery or touch myself!” I squawk, ‘That’s just some of the telltale signs that you and the things around you are getting old. It’s like when you bend over to tie your shoes and catch yourself thinking; what else can I do while I’m down here? Or everything hurts, and what doesn’t hurt, doesn’t work. …’ Mike breaks in, “Like when my knees buckle but my belt won’t?” I squabble, ‘No dude! That’s just a sign you’re getting fat. I’ve heard you say it’s not your fault, that you’ve got gland issues. Well, it’s not the gland you think. You know which one? It’s the salivary gland. And FYI, if your pants keep creeping up on you like that, by the time you hit 65, you’re going to be just a pair of pants and a head. Everyone will say you’ve got the furniture disease— your chest done fell into your drawers. Plus, if you don’t watch yourself, your life will be like a box of chocolates. It ends sooner for the fat people!’ Mike reels back and babbles, “Ouch

Spyke! You’re meaner than an old wet hen pecking below the belt. Just ‘cuz you’re a bird doesn’t give you the right to stoop that low! Who pulled on your tail feathers and pooped down your back? Imprisoned in every fat man is a thin man wildly signaling to get out! I think you need to finish your story and push away from the keyboard.” I chirp, ‘Just like you need to practice pushing away from the table? I wish I could right now. My farm animal friends have asked me for answers to their most pondering questions. Maybe two bird brains are better than one. Tell me, daddy, if a rabbit’s foot is so lucky, what happened to the rabbit? Does distressed leather come from intense cows? Why do we wait until the pig is dead to cure it? Why don’t sheep shrink in the rain?’ Mike scratches his chin and replies, “Well Spyke, I may be a fat bird brain, but at least I’m riding the gravy train on biscuit wheels and enjoying life! I find the best answers come with bugs in the teeth. It’s time we get explanations to your friends’ frustrations. I must pull up my bootstraps, get my knees in the breeze, your wings in the wind, and the Fat Bird 2 wheels rolling down the road.” SPYKE

Christian Motorcyclists Association “The Lord has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy.” We must become mature in our hearts and minds and learn to see the good things God has done for us. God has a plan for us; He wants us to be happy and joyful. The cool thing is that most of the time it is simply a matter of attitude. If we make it a habit of looking for the good in life, we often find that goodness, in abundance. Unfortunately, the same holds true for finding the ugly and negative. They can be found just by looking for them. If we pay attention to what God is actively doing in our lives, we can see His incredible love and mercy. He does the good things for us that we might be blessed and full of joy! I know you might say that bad things still happen to us, that is where we learn and grow. The old saying tells us that without the deep valleys that we walk in life we can never learn to appreciate the mountaintop experiences. When we have learned to walk in both journeys, we are better able to see God at work! When we watch Him, we can’t help but find ourselves full of joy. Where’s your focus - on the positive aspects of life, or looking down and focusing on the difficulties of life? Time after time He has blessed me, abundantly, and His loving kindness has never left me. When the showers of life drench you on a ride, just remember to have a positive outlook. With God, great things are just around the bend! In The Wind, Denny Dingler BORNTORIDE.COM | BTR 51 Check out BornToRide.com for more articles from Christian Motorcyclists Association

Years ago, I took a long ride to see someone who was important to me. It was only 80 miles, but in that distance, my rear sprocket came loose and needed fixing on the shoulder of the road. That wasn’t too bad, but I also got rained on three times on the ride yet was actually dry upon arrival. Unfortunately, I had an immature heart and was focusing more on the challenges and hardships. I was focused on the fact that having a sprocket come loose while traveling at highway speeds could have been dangerous, and I could have been hurt. I ignored the fact that while I did get drenched on the ride, when I arrived, due to the sunshine and a warm summer day, I was completely dry. With the three showers I rode through, I think I actually smelled better on arrival than at the start of the journey. It was so easy to complain about the difficulties I had faced, rather than getting excited that I was safe and got to my destination unharmed. My focus was on simply paying attention to what went wrong rather than what went right! As we walk through life, we must pay attention to what good is going on around us. In the Bible, in Psalm 126:3, it says, BTR 70 | BORNTORIDE.COM
