You should be especially aware at intersections, where other vehicles can cross your path of travel. There are many things to scan for, including traffic devices, road surfaces, and the traffic and pedestrians around you. In a slow, tight turn, such as turning around in a parking lot, it helps to counterweight by leaning in the opposite direction of the motorcycle and direction of the turn. I’m excited to announce I have joined the Bert’s Team! Wendy LaForce
Hey there Biker Family! I’m Wendy LaForce, Sun Coast District Coordinator for Stilettos on Steel Female Riders Group and Born To Ride/Women’s World Public Relations/Good Will Ambassador. Here’s My Harley Story. I’ll be celebrating my 5th year of riding coming up in September. I completed my motorcycle endorsement class at Jim’s HarleyDavidson in May of 2014 without ever riding a motorcycle before. I saved my pennies for a few months and bought a 2003 HD Hugger Anniversary Sportster. I was fortunate enough to have some amazing friends that helped me learn how to ride. Special thanks to Lynne Kottke for your guidance over the past 5 years. You have helped make me the rider and leader that I am today. I rode that Sporty for a year then traded up to a 2014 HD Street Bob in 2016. I also started a local chapter of Stilettos on Steel Female Riders Group in 2016, which has grown to over a hundred members in several chapters. In 2017, I upgraded yet again and bought a 2016 Fatboy Lo from Josephine Carter at Bert’s Barracuda Harley-Davidson. With the help of Ted Brodene and Spinwurkz Customs, my Fatboy Lo is now a custom bagger. I’m excited to announce that I have joined the Motorcycle Sales Team at Bert’s Barracuda Harley-Davidson! This amazing opportunity will allow me to share my passion for riding. I can’t wait to help make people’s dreams become their realities! Please don’t hesitate to contact me today. The journey starts with your endorsement class, then selecting a motorcycle that best fits you. Continue on your journey of empowerment by joining Stilettos on Steel Female Riders Group. A sisterhood that will help you gain the confidence you need in order to become a safe, street-smart rider. I can help you on your journey from start to finish! Contact me today! Kyle Petty’s 25th Annual Charity Ride Lead 250 Riders Through 11 States in Nine Days Covering Approximately 3,700 Miles. Former NASCAR driver and NBC Sports racing analyst Kyle Petty celebrated the 25th anniversary of his annual Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America by leading the longest route in the Ride’s history. As one of the most successful and popular charity rides in the country, the Ride traveled a true corner-to-corner route across the United States – starting in Seattle, Washington, on May 3 and ending in Key Largo, Florida, on May 11. On this milestone anniversary route, Petty lead 250 participants, including more than 30 new Riders, through 11 states in nine days. Presented for the seventh year in a row by Manheim®, North America’s leading provider of used vehicle services and the host of two stops along the route at Manheim Seattle and Manheim Tampa,
the Ride traveled nearly 3,700 miles to raise funds and awareness for Victory Junction – a camp dedicated to providing life-changing camping experiences for children with chronic or life-threatening illnesses. Traveling from Washington to Florida, this year’s trek will be offered a variety of incredible scenic views. From the beauty of the Pacific Northwest and the red rock terrain in Utah to the Colorado hot springs and the Rocky Mountains to the North Central Plains of Texas and the Louisiana bayou, and onto the Everglades and sunny Florida beaches, Petty concurs this 25th Anniversary Ride was the ride of a lifetime. Spectators along the 2019 route were encouraged to attend one of the Ride’s nine overnight stops to greet Petty and the riders. on the ride and commented “This was the ride of a lifetime, truly! We covered 11 states and every type of terrain imaginable: from mountains, canyons, plains, bayous, and Everglades. Surprisingly, the biggest challenge was the weather throughout Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi; as a Floridian I thought surely the cold weather in the PNW would be the hardest to deal
with, but it was a breeze compared to the tornadoes, violent crosswinds and torrential downpour that came once we started heading east across the southern states. Above everything, the part of this experience for which I am most grateful is becoming a part of the incredible group of people who make up the KPCR family. I was honored to have been chosen as the Angel Rider
for this very special 25th Anniversary ride by David Andreas. Unfortunately, David passed away before the ride - so I rode in his memory and was fortunate enough to have his family waiting at the finish line for me in Key Largo. I was overwhelmed by the sense of support and welcoming I felt from the first day and the sadness I felt on the last day when we realized we were going

back to our normal lives. This was the most well-organized event I’ve ever been a part of and the kindness and generosity of this group were inspiring. I encourage everyone to check out www.victoryjunction.org to learn more about this amazing cause and what can be done to help support this lifechanging camp for seriously ill children and their families.”
Because of the Ride, 8,185 children have attended Victory Junction at no cost to their families. Victory Junction is a year-round camping environment for children, ages six to 16, with chronic medical conditions or serious illnesses. Co-founded by Kyle Petty and his family in honor of their son Adam, the camp is located in Randleman, North Carolina. Last year alone, the Ride raised
$1.3 million and sent 100 children to Camp. Victory Junction has served as the Ride’s primary beneficiary since its establishment by Petty and his family in 2004 in honor of his late son, Adam. Women’s World Highrise Harley
After spending most of my life on the back of someone else’s bike; I got my license and bought a bike at the ripe old age of 59. When my husband died, I missed him, and I missed riding with him. One of those things I could change! Learning to ride had to be easier than finding another good husband with a bike! At first, I just wanted to learn to ride. I didn’t know if I’d ever get a bike of my own. I just couldn’t see how it would fit into my lifestyle. After my husband passed, I’d moved to a high-rise condo in Atlanta. Not exactly where you want to ride a motorcycle! I fell in love with a red Harley-Davidson Softail Slim. I had it delivered to a friend’s house in a small nearby town. We would coordinate our schedules; I’d drive an hour to her place then we’d ride our bikes for an hour or two and I’d drive the hour back. As soon as she got her license, my friend was ‘riding it like she stole it’ as they say. It wasn’t so easy for me. It took a long time to get the hang of changing gears and using the clutch. I needed more time riding and practicing. It was time to bring Rosie home! She’s named Rosie after Rosie the Riveter. BTR 28 | BORNTORIDE.COM
A cousin who’s an experienced rider brought her home for me. Then I faced the first obstacle of having a high-rise Harley. How do you learn to ride in the city with all that traffic? What I needed was a big parking lot for practice. With no traffic. One Sunday morning I was looking out the window while having my morning coffee and I saw it. The parking lot of the shopping center in the next block is completely empty early on Saturday and Sunday mornings. I’m not a morning person but weekend mornings when offices are closed, stores haven’t opened yet and church services hasn’t begun, the city is quiet. Perfectly quiet. Peaceful. No traffic. Beautiful quiet morning rides. That’s where I got comfortable riding Rosie in the city! From there I ventured out to surrounding neighborhoods. Then I found backroads to various suburbs, heading toward the mountains. There is traffic getting out of the city, but I’ve gotten more used to it now and avoid times when it’s heavy as much as possible. Even experienced bikers are usually surprised when they learn that I keep my bike in the city.
The next hurdle was how to keep her charged? A trickle charge is easy, but I park in a parking deck where there are no electrical outlets. Another obstacle to having a high-rise Harley. While my girlfriends in the suburbs simply plug their trickle charger into a socket in the garage, I’ve learned to remove my battery, bring it into my condo and plug it in there. Then I learned there’s a portable charger. I can charge it inside then use it to charge the bike. Of course, it’s best to simply ride enough to keep the battery charged. I do that as much as possible. That means sometimes taking a short ride when it’s colder than my preferred riding weather. It sometimes means finding time in my schedule for a quick ride or at least cranking the bike before heading out of town or when I know I won’t ride for a few days. Although I write about women who ride, I still consider myself a beginning rider. I’ve only had my license a couple years. I take it easy and stay close to home. I love my quiet morning rides in the city. I’ve learned that you don’t have to lead a biker lifestyle— whatever that is—to enjoy riding. You can fit a motorcycle into the lifestyle you have. I love my high-rise Harley and I love riding country backroads. As for lifestyle, Rosie and I are city girls!

made which was screaming loud in my face all along is; Ruth Eckerd Hall is a venue which promotes high-quality events only. That alone should have sent warnings and defused some of my arrogant pretentious “know-it-all” about Pink Floyd attitude. The place was packed! Full house. Well, folks, I learned a big lesson. I was completely blown away by the quality of show Brit Floyd put out. The vocals were almost identical in terms of voices. The music was spot on. That alone is impressive because there is absolutely nothing simple “cookie cutter-like” about Pink Floyd music. I kid you not, on more than one occasion, I was on the edge of my seat in complete disbelief about what I was witnessing by sight and by hearing. Looking at my dear friends Jori, Ryann, and Steve who are much savvier in today’s music than I; I could see they were truly and genuinely enjoying the experience. Sweet Jori could hardly shut her Facebook live feature. Lol. Brit Floyd, as it turns out has the reputation of being the world’s greatest Pink Floyd tribute show. They returned to the stage in 2019 with their most ambitious and best production yet, a very special 40th Anniversary retrospective of Pink Floyd’s iconic rock opera, ‘The Wall.’ Released in November 1979, a semiautobiographical concept album from the
mind of Pink Floyd founding member Roger Waters, The Wall remains one of the biggest selling albums of all time, and an important moment in Rock music history. As well as performing a host of musical highlights from The Wall, Brit Floyd performed classic gems from The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals, and The Division Bell plus lots more. The Brit Floyd show has truly become a phenomenon, widely regarded as the world’s greatest live tribute to Pink Floyd. Faithfully recreating the scale and pomp of the final 1994 Division Bell tour, complete with a stunning million-dollar light show, large circle screen, and arch plus moving lights, lasers, inflatables, and theatrics. A Brit Floyd show really is as close as fans will get to experiencing the magnificence of a Pink Floyd show live. So, will I ever give in to pre-conceived notions before I see an act again? Nope! Thank you, Ruth Eckerd Hall, for putting this show on and literally throwing me back on pleasant memory lane. Next time I see a tribute band promoted at Ruth Eckerd Hall; I’m paying attention! Next month August, stay put for my exclusive one on one interview with none other than Mr. Ted Nugent also scheduled to play Ruth Eckerd Hall August 20, 2019. Got tix? I sure do! Tell them Night Train of Born To Ride sent ya!

About two months ago I was surfing Facebook for future events. I came across a concert promoted by my absolute favorite concert venue in Clearwater, FL—Ruth Eckerd Hall. A Pink Floyd tribute band named “Brit Floyd,” I knew nothing of. Being the Pink Floyd snob that I am, I kind of chuckled at the concept there was a group of musicians out there with the audacity of doing Pink Floyd covers. How dare they?! There is no way I thought anyone can compare or play as well. I called my friends at Ruth Eckerd Hall and got myself four tickets. Yes, four! I figured if I was going to set myself up for the disappointment I may as well be with people I wanted to be with, so I could at least be laughing in good company. So I brought Steve Bruno lead singer of Floridabased heavy metal act “Clenchfist,” by the way, scheduled to play a homecoming concert July 20 in Brooksville for us bikers, his friend Ryann and my friend Jori who we can always count on for some good contagious belly laughs. Tuesday, June 18, 2019, came up and I got ready mentally for a full critique, psychologically armed with an arsenal of lethal pre-conceived ideas about tribute bands. Problem was, I was about to benchmark Brit Floyd with cover bands I use to see back in the days when I was in the music business. The second mistake I

Spyke & Mike Hey there, my avid BTR readers, Mike and I have officially become a statistic. Most of our closest friends already heard the news about Mike being run off the road by a distracted driver. For those that haven’t, I’ll give you a brief description of what I saw. I was riding in my usual spot; behind the windshield. We were going down the Pinellas Bayway when a white vehicle came into our lane and Mike tried to avoid them. He went into a median turn area but could not slow down fast enough. He rode over the curb and ended up plowing a small tree. As he laid there moaning, I decided to find the next largest tree and climb it. I waited for someone to come but nobody stopped. Then finally, the ambulance showed up and took Mike away. Know Tow Towing arrived and proceeded to take the Fat Bird 2 away. I was atop a neighboring tree and squawking loudly but, obviously, they couldn’t hear me. Reann, Mike’s girlfriend, came back later that evening and I could hear her calling out for me, but she was in the wrong area and didn’t hear me squawking back. I ended up staying in the palm tree overnight. I felt safe there because I was tucked in behind some branches and far enough up off the ground that no predators could get to me. Being close to the Gulf of Mexico, I was worried about ospreys and eagles. They look at me as if I’m a delicacy. But I figured I could hold my own if needed, while hidden in the palms. It was a long quiet night with only a few cars going by and no other noises around me. The next day, a couple of Mike’s really close friends, Darrell and Shareen Stollings, set up a search party and they came out. I was squawking very loudly this time and one of them heard me. Mike’s friend, Kris Chandler from Pasco County, was with Michele Sutak when they spotted me. He went to his truck, got a ladder out, climbed the tree, and I went right to his hand.
that’s just what biker friends do, and you happen to have more than most. They have the biggest hearts and give all they can. But they take nothing in return and almost always get a bad rap. One day that will change and hopefully, we can blame it on you, Spyke. Another good example is our brother from another mother; Everywhere Eddie. Like us, and even more sometimes, he’s out there making people smile, taking lots of pictures, and just being a great ambassador for BTR and the riding community. On the first and second Tuesday in July, we will be joining him for his radio broadcasting event that he does from River’s Edge Bar and Grill. They have Taco Tuesday going on and the radio show runs from 7 to 10. Everyone will get to hear how you squawk on air and see it live on Facebook. At that time, you avid readers can call in and ask Spyke any question you’ve got. When Ron, Debbie, and the whole BTR crew got wind of the news, they were all over us like flies on poop.
