The Sleepy Commuter You’re riding your motorcycle to work just after sunrise, traveling down a typical suburban street lined with car-filled driveways. As you approach one of these driveways a car begins to move and backs out directly into your path. You brake hard and come to a stop just inches away from the car’s rear bumper. Strategy: Given the hour of day and the type of neighborhood, you could have expected to encounter at least a few drivers backing out of their driveways and heading off to work. Clues include drivers getting into their cars as you approach, or a tell-tale puff of exhaust warning you that the car has been started and is preparing to leave. Watch for brake lights and backup lights, too. If you observe any of the above warning signs, take the following precautions: Slow your pace and prepare to stop, if necessary. Keep your eyes up and cover the front brake lever and rear brake pedal. Stabilize your speed so that if the car does begin to move out into your path, you have sufficient space to stop. If there isn’t room or time to slow to a stop, scan for an escape route to swerve into. If there is no oncoming traffic, swerve to the left; if this route isn’t available, consider swerving to the right. Info: www.msf-usa.org

confidence and helped to clear her head with a little ‘wind therapy.’ She would love to do a long ride out west someday but running two businesses keeps her busy for now. For twenty years she’s owned and operated a web development company called Bella Design. A few years back after taking classes in calligraphy as a creative outlet, Desiree established Inkwell Designs—an artist event agency. From a hobby to a growing family business Inkwell Designs provides embossing, engraving, painting for corporate gifts and on-site events. At Inkwelldesigners. com you can see how she’s turned this into a thriving family business serving Fortune 500 clients. Combining her business with a love for motorcycles Desiree was thrilled to do a project for Triumph Motorcycles where she engraved wine bottles that were given to their executives.
At age 45 when Desiree Colonna lost her husband to suicide and was left with two teenage girls to raise, she felt lost. Reminded of her how she loved riding on her brother’s motorcycle as a teen, she took the MSF class to do something she’d always wanted for herself and to give her something new to focus on. She passed the class the first time but wasn’t comfortable with the clutch and gears she signed up again. The instructor took extra time explaining that to her to make sure she got it. Proud of learning to ride, Desiree bought a big Harley-Davidson Switchback. A big bike for a beginner. She dumped it on her first ride and had to have someone else drive it home. She bought a Yamaha VIRAGO 250 and rode it around her neighborhood to learn. Her next bike was a Moto Guzzi V-7 Racer. In 2018, when Triumph introduced the Bonneville Speedmaster, she purchased the second one sold in Georgia. Although BTR 12 | BORNTORIDE.COM
she still owns and sometimes rides the Moto Guzzi V-7 Racer she considers the Triumph Bonneville Speedmaster to be ‘her’ bike. When Desiree bought her Speedmaster her new partner Joe went along on his bike. The guys at the dealership suggested that they drive up to North Georgia and ride the Suches Loop. The two-lane highway of 15 mph curves and hairpin turns was much more challenging than they expected. For an inexperienced rider on a new bike, it was terrifying! “I wanted to stop and cry,” Desiree admitted. But there wasn’t another way back home, so she gripped the handlebars of her new bike and kept going. “I did it!” Desiree said. “I survived that so I can do anything!” That risky ride early on gave her the confidence to keep riding. Although she rides mostly around her local area, Desire committed to riding every day, even if it was only for a half-hour or so. The daily riding helped to build her skill and

MEET ME AT THE CREG! Images and text by Scott and Carla Odell
The Creg-ny-baa that is, the most iconic establishment on the mountain course on the Isle of Man and the home of the oldest continuous motorcycle race in the world. The Tourist Trophy is the official name, but it is … the TT. I must digress a bit to tell you how we ended up here. As I have said before, I am a self-proclaimed Isle of Man-iac and when they need an ambassador to the rock, I will be applying for that job. It is our third trip to the IOM and it is starting to become “our second home,” those are words from my wife. (Boy, am I a lucky guy!) It is different every time we come and that is in part to the weather. This year brought a lot of rain and a lot of sitting around the paddocks for the racers and teams. You have to remember, you are on the Isle of Man, so be grateful you made it here as there is always something to do. This year was extra special as I would be meeting up with new friends I had been talking to on Facebook. I would say this year turned out to be the best as I know have some lifelong memories and names to go with them. It is a very small world as my friend, Steve Hallas, from Yorkshire, England told me that his favorite band of all time is Lynyrd Skynyrd. Here is someone from another country that loves an American band, and he knows more about them than I do!
BORNTORIDE.COM | BTR 17
The hardest part of the trip was driving narrow roads, on the left-hand side, with the steering wheel on the right side! What is wrong with these people? I found myself one morning going down a mountain road in the fog with the hedges scraping both sides of the car! While driving, I was thinking maybe this road wasn’t for cars, maybe cows or sheep? We survived the ordeal but took the train for the next couple of days.
With the rain holding up racing, we embarked on finding the true people of the IOM and the culture. Over at the port terminal, we ran into David Cubbon who runs trike tours around the course. He lives, breathes and is the poster boy for the TT. He proceeded to remove his shirt to display the Isle of Man TT story on his back in tattoos. The main image is of John McGuiness, 23-time winner of the TT.
“ SUCH AN INCREDIBLE RACE TO WITNESS, IT WAS THE HIGH POINT OF THE WEEK AND EVERYONE FORGOT ALL ABOUT THE PREVIOUS RAINS.” BTR 18 | BORNTORIDE.COM
His autograph is actually tattooed above the image. We were really impressed with Mr. Cubbon and are so grateful he took the time to share his tattoos with us. Another local, we met was Samantha Harvey, who owns Harvey’s Nails. Talk about hardcore dedication to the TT. She did her nails with carbon fiber and chrome, the same
material you find on a high-performance race bike. She is also a fan of John McGuinness. Cristen Teare is another Isle of Man native I met on Facebook. I actually made a custom T-shirt for her. We had never met, but she was waiting for us at the airport with a hug when we got off the plane. She also lent us lawn chairs,

blankets, a cooler and a flask for the week. In addition, she had baked us a cake and gave us other snacks for the week. Are you seeing why we are loving the Isle of Man so much? The whole is-land opens up their arms to everyone during the 2 weeks. Have you been camping out and need a place to dry your clothes? How about a hot cup of tea? Trust me, someone will be offering it to you. Every town there gets involved with the TT. We saw beauty shops with sport bikes in the window and even a drug store with a motorcycle on display. There are bike shows to attend, motorcycle museums to wander through, a couple of castles to trek around ‌ oh yeah, we are here for racing! You need to have a plan in place as to where you are going to watch the racing from and to get there early for the prime viewing areas. All TT firsttimers need to spend some time at St. Ninnians toward the bottom of Bray Hill. This is the first section where the bikes roar down the hill at over 180 mph between brick walls and buildings and you get the true sense of speed. There are plenty of slow corners and fast corners to watch from. The first day we chose to go to the top of the mountain to watch at the Bungalow, as the views are spectacular. You can see the road from all directions and better than anywhere on the Island. Make sure to take the Snaeffel train from Laxey, as you can leave whenever you want, and you don’t have to worry about traffic or parking. This year turned out to be the Peter Hickman show as he won 3 of the races and was on his way to the 4th when he had equipment failure that landed him in the 2nd spot in the senior race. Lee Johnston on his Yamaha walked away with his first Supersport win, and Michael Dunlop took the lightweight victory on his Paton twin. All eyes were on John Mcguiness as he made his way back to competition after some terrible injuries in 2017. He was up for the challenge, but his machines were not. Failure after failure left John stranded on the course with a lot of frustration. The sidecars put on a great show as usual, but it was dominated by Ben and Tom Birchall. They have now won 9 races in a row and hold the fastest lap speed in a sidecar. At the beginning of the story, I said we made it to the Creg-ny-baa for the Senior race on Friday. Carla had scored some VIP tickets for us earlier in the year. The Creg was ours along with 94 other people for the day. Breakfast and lunch were provided in the full-service restaurant and an open bar was upstairs on the balcony looking down

on the mountain course. I died and went to road racing heaven! Before the race started, I told my wife that Dean Harrison would be winning it. After the first 3 laps, it looked like Peter Hickman was running away with it, but his BMW 1000RR was spitting out water at full throttle— but not overheating. Dean Harrison knew that this was his race and poured on the coals. Everyone thought Hickman would retire the bike, but he showed the crowd why he is a champion. He limped the bike around at half throttle most of the time and came in 2nd place with local Connor Cummins taking 3rd. Such an incredible race to witness, it was the high point of the week and everyone forgot all about the previous rains. We are truly blessed to be able to come to the Isle of Man. But these races have started to become personal to me. Everyone that races here does so by choice and they know the dangers and consequences of mistakes. A month before
the TT, I was texting with a TT rider and showing him some of my artwork. His name was Daley Mathison, a 27-year old father of one and a loving husband. He was living his dream, but his dream came to an end on the Isle of Man. I will always remember him, and I will look at his picture on my phone every day. Godspeed Daley, I know you are still watching after your family. Will we come back to the Isle of Man? Yes, we will, as coming to the Isle of Man honors all fallen riders in the history of the race. This should be your number one item on your bucket list as a motorcyclist. There is no place like it on earth. You will remember it for the rest of your life.

WOMAN POWER X10 PROVING THEM ALL WRONG
On the cover of Born To Ride - May 2019 Issue #180 we featured Lisamarie
Garcia, a realtor, female rider and member of Stilettos on Steele. Her story was interesting, her motorcycle was intriguing, and her career with McPeak Real Estate Firm successful. After her story took off,
she became even more successful and that’s when we found out there was more to this gal that makes her and her bike shine! Much more. So here she is again, with more to the story that her raving fans are telling us. Every day we hear about successful women that break glass ceilings. What we don’t hear about is the battle they go through to be successful. From an early age, Lisamarie fought that fight and continues to strive for more every day. “My name is Lisamarie, and I’m

Lately, I feel like all I do is prove those words wrong, And I love it!” “Not to long ago, I was a stay at

It empowered me to become a successful realtor and today I own 3 motorcycles and have my eye on a couple more. I didn’t stop there and I’m not stopping ever! Aside from my new-found love of riding, I’ve picked up a couple more hobbies to include target shooting and deer hunting. I try to fit in an appearance at the Gun Range a couple times a month. Some of my personal favorite guns are my custom-built Rock River AR-15, Kel-Tec KSG 12 Gauge and my alltime favorite my Sig Sauer P238. If you need to sell a home, she’ll do it. No gray area in between. She hits her mark every time as a Florida Real Estate and Property Management Expert in the Tampa Bay area, especially in the expanding Brandon and Riverview, FL market. But then came another challenge. Lisamarie explains. “A couple months ago I was offered

an opportunity of a lifetime. To advertise my Real Estate Business on National Television. Not only did it open up a market I’ve always dreamt of, but it has led me to one of my most recent hobbies. Modeling! The Videographer for the TV show asked if I’d model wedding gowns for Royal Bridal, a local Bridal shop in Brandon, Florida. I’ve done several Wedding Gown shoots since then and I love it!!” “What’s next??? I’m not sure but whatever it is, I’m ready. I’ll be the girly chick on the Harley fixing her lipstick at red light. So here I am, Still Girly as can be… Selling Real Estate, Riding, Shooting, Modeling and looking for my next adventure.” You can bet Born To Ride will be there to cover her next adventure! I cannot possibly think of a better date to write this feature than on the 4th of July. I still remember when I purchased my very first rock album; “Scream Dream” by Ted Nugent. This is back in the days when music was still engraved on vinyl or recorded on tapes. I was raised in a
family of trained classical musicians. If it wasn’t “classical” music, it simply was not music. I can’t tell you how much I wanted an electric guitar! I had music inside me screaming to get out. The most rebellious years of my life—my youth. I figured if they did not want me to get a guitar and hear it
then I would find a way to make them hear one. I still remember coming home after shopping, inserting Ted’s “Scream Dream” into my cassette player and pressing the play button “Machiavellianly” smiling, waiting for “Wango Tango” to kick in. All adults in the room were concerned at the sight of BORNTORIDE.COM | BTR 41
the album cover I purchased; a crazy screaming Tarzan-dressed long-haired dude with guitar arms. Ted’s “Wango Tango” song hit their judgmental eardrums so hard their faces betrayed their complete disapproval. I was pleased with those results. From that day on, they all heard Ted Nugent’s tapes on a daily basis as loud as I could possibly play it. Rock N’ Roll became my peaceful way to express a giant middle finger at anyone trying to limit me or restrain me from expressing what I so deeply needed to say. If anyone told me back then, ‘One day you will interview this man and write about it,’ I would have told them “you are out of your mind!” How sad are the limits we put on ourselves! I am here to tell you and encourage you to dream big folks. Never give up. Live fully by pursuing your dreams rather than just exist to go through this life BTR 42 | BORNTORIDE.COM
listening to what everyone says you should be or do. So long as no one gets hurt, own your dreams. They are yours! Pursue them with all of your might. Certainly, Ted Nugent has done that with his own life and continues to. He would be the first one to encourage you in this way of life. Love him or hate him, this man has accomplished more than a multitude of us would dream of and no one can take that from him. Ever. Ted is scheduled to perform at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater, FL this coming August 20, 2019. I am expecting the roof to be blown off. I got my tix, and I suggest you get some as well because this is going to be one heck of a party! Multi-platinum guitar legend Ted Nugent released a brand-new full-length album - his first in four years – THE MUSIC MADE ME DO IT via Round Hill Records.
1995, 2005, and 2019. Not a damn thing you can do about it and who the hell would want to. Celebrate American shitkicker soul rock ‘n’ roll like you mean it.” Ted Nugent has carved a permanent place in rock n’ roll history as the ultimate guitar-shredding showman, selling more than 40 million albums and performing in excess of 6,700 (and counting!) high-octane live shows. As a budding musician, Nugent was strongly influenced by Chuck Berry and Bo Diddly, and knew he wanted to pursue that type of sound and attitude. Early bands, The Royal Highboys, and The Lourds, paved the way for the Amboy Dukes - and their psychedelic JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE MIND kicked young Ted’s career into hyperdrive. The axe maniac soon broke out as a solo artist, where the guitarist’s prodigious talent, “ear-shattering” volume and over-the-top stage antics quickly earned him the moniker of Motor City Madman. Cranking out hits like “Cat Scratch Fever,” “Just What The Doctor Ordered,” “Free for All,” and the iconic Stranglehold (my absolute favorite), Ted Nugent garnered international acclaim and truly hit his stride, becoming one of the top-grossing tour acts in America. His no-holds-barred career now spans six decades of multi-platinum hits. The ultimate Road Warrior, touring, and recording continues at Ted’s breakneck pace. Nugent and his inimitable sound have been featured on VH1’s Behind the Music, A&E’s Biography, and more. He was recently named Detroit’s Greatest Guitar Player of All Time by readers of MLive. So how was my chat with the “Motor City Madman”? Here it is verbatim no filters (sensitive natures advised):
The album features Greg Smith (Billy Joel, Alice Cooper, Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow) on bass, Jason Hartless (Joe Lynn Turner, Mitch Ryder) on drums, and the Motor City Madman himself on lead guitar and vocals. Accompanying the CD is a bonus DVD, LIVE AT FREEDOM HILL, an electrifying full-length concert captured at Freedom Hill Amphitheatre in Sterling Heights, Michigan. THE MUSIC MADE ME DO IT is already receiving rave reviews from the press with My Global Mind confirming Nugent’s “uncanny ability to blend soul-crushing guitar riffs and well-crafted lyrics with sheer primal instinct.” Of THE MUSIC MADE ME DO IT, Nugent avowed, “The music made me do it in 1955. The music made me do it in 1965. The music made me do it in 1975. The music made me do it in 1985,
NT: The most meaningful song you wrote? What was it about and why was this song the most meaningful? Ted: “I have so many wonderful songs that I absolutely crave and each one played a powerful role in my American musical dream. Everyone by now knows my love and admiration for the great Fred Bear and the emotion in that song every time I unleash it. We captured its essence on both the original, and on the new definitive acoustic performance with all the fire and passion celebrated by all hands-on conservation families that grasp, participate, and cherish this perfect hunting lifestyle. Every song we perform gets a musician’s dream response, but the mighty FRED BEAR song connects deeply with audiences across the land.” NT: Best memories as a child? Why? How has it impacted you up to this day? Ted: “I was born in 1948 to a father already following in the footsteps of the great Fred Bear. The mystical flight of the arrow took hold of me immediately and expanded each year of my life. Kid’s bow and arrow sets and Wham-O slingshots quickly morphed to yew longbows and eventually Wing, Bear, and Shakespeare recurves. Hunting adventures and fun sport meat trophies – pure predator lessons on squirrels and river rats along our Detroit neighborhood Rouge River wildlife kingdom expanded to annual family bowhunting safaris “Up North” and the life-changing introduction to Fred Bear, and as they say, the rest is history. exciting than at any time in my 70-year American Dream.” NT: If you had an opportunity again, would you enlist in the military? Ted: “When I was of military age, I was clueless about the history of war or the U.S. military. Knowing what I know now about U.S. warriors for freedom and their dedication and sacrifice for our American dream, if I could go back in time, I would certainly have enlisted for World War II, and the war on terror for the glaringly obvious duty of good defeating evil. I was not drafted during the Vietnam War, but I have served my country and the warriors to the best of my ability my entire adult life. There can be no better definition of my commitment to all those U.S. military heroes than my respect for and acceptance by them. I have personally touched and been inspired by literally thousands of these selfless people.” NT: Do you ride motorcycles? If so, what is it? riding cause from within? Ted: “I don’t ride, but many of my friends do. My manager is a long-time rider, and I have friends who are passionate collectors of all-things Harley-Davidson.” NT: Among other things you are also known to be a political activist. What do you want to say to our readership of all political spectrums? Ted: “We see the three arms of our government that were put in place for checks and balances turning into one big ugly unaccountable monster that believes it can get away with anything it damn well pleases. And let this be a warning to our elected employees out there; we are fed up and we’re not going to take it anymore. Thank God for the great President Donald Trump finally doing something America can be proud of.” NT: The most powerful meaningful things you taught your children? How has it impacted them?
Ted: “Dedicate your entire life to be solidly [rooted] in the asset column by being the absolute best you can be, clean and sober, for your family, neighbors, community, country and the good earth. Aspire to an omniscient level of awareness so you can be accountable for every step you take and every decision you make in life. All my sons and daughters are wonderful, positive, caring, loving, hardworking, cocky, funny, ass-kicking productive Americans.” NT: How do you want to be remembered? What legacy do you want to leave behind for your family, friends, and fans? Ted: “I will be remembered by all the wonderful people who actually know me as the loving, giving, caring, hardworking, take no shit patriotic American who never gave up and created nonstop amazing shitkicker soul-music. That’s my legacy and it is untouchable.” NT: If you had an opportunity to serve on a humanitarian mission, what would it be, where and how? Ted: “I’ve had that opportunity! On a USO tour with Toby Keith, I traveled to every military camp throughout Iraq and Afghanistan and beyond, performing for and connecting with our brave military hero warriors. It was certainly a highlight of my life.” NT: What do you look forward to doing in your spare time during your tour? Ted: “When I am on tour it is 100% dedicated to the music every night. The rest of the year, I hunt, fish, trap, and participate in God’s miraculous tooth fang and claw creation as the reasoning predator He made me.” NT: Favorite wild meat recipe? Ted: “My NUGE RECIPE FOR THE SOUL AND GUTS by Chef Nuge; Kill legal game cleanly. Handle with tender loving care. Add fire. Share with family and friends. Devour.” Today, every single one of my children has their own electric guitar. Do I have one? I have a good old acoustic that I’ve been playing on and off since 1990. Pursue your dreams folks! Relentlessly! See you at the concert August 20, 2019, at Ruth Eckerd Hall and tell them Night Train sent ya.

Christian Motorcyclists Association, “Fix our eyes on Jesus.” Years ago, when I decided to start riding again, I discovered that I had to take a riding course to get a certificate to get a motorcycle endorsement. I called around and found the opportunity to take a short refresher course with an instructor and then pass a riding test in order to get that necessary piece of paper. During the refresher course, the instructor covered several basic riding truths, ideas that I had never known about in previous years. I had, in ages past, learned to ride a dirt bike and without further training, got a street bike and a license. The trainer showed me panic braking, crisp turns, and everybody’s favorite maneuver, the U-turn. He shared from his experience and really opened my mind to important concepts concerning safe riding. He even showed me how easily the movements could be made on his 800-pound Harley, as opposed to the little 300-pound bike I was using for the class. Perhaps the most important thing I learned during the time I spent with the instructor was the concept of where my eyes go, so my bike goes. It seemed counter-intuitive to not look at that BTR 70 | BORNTORIDE.COM
big telephone pole on the side of the road, not that far from where my turn will take me. The bottom line was that looking where I was going worked! The idea was to take a quick glance at my path of travel, then look higher towards where I intend to end up. Once one can get used to not watching things like curbs, signage, and other items along the roadside, the path of travel becomes incredibly safer. Simply put, we need to fix our eyes on our target. One day when practicing riding inside of a 24-foot circle to prepare for a trip to the mountains, my mind slipped, and I looked down. Even though I knew where to keep my eyes focused, in just a flash of a moment I looked down from my target and the next thing I knew I was on the ground. When I looked down the bike cooperated, and we went down! So it is in our lives, In Hebrews 12:2, we are challenged to “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus.” I have learned that whenever things go haywire, whenever the world just does not make sense, or when we find ourselves at the end of hope, we must simply focus our vision on the One who can fix it all, Jesus! I have discovered that if my eyes are on Jesus, I find life makes more sense, and I have peace. Likewise, if my eyes are not fixed on Him, I find that I am easily distracted, tempted to go the wrong way and do the wrong things. When my focus is right, my ride through life is a joy. Remember, where your eyes go, so does your ride go. Keep your eyes on Jesus!
