Imagine a typical scene from a nature-network documentary, one that shows a fur seal frantically swimming with a great white shark in ruthless pursuit, the huge snout of the shark filling the television screen. In the corresponding street scene, you’re riding your motorcycle down a wide arterial street when a huge sedan closes in on you, its grille filling your mirrors. Just as you change lanes to get out of this car-shark’s path, the tailgater also changes lanes behind you. What are your best strategies for avoiding (or evading) this situation? Strategy: As soon as you notice a tailgater approaching in your mirrors, take steps to get out of the way.
Activate your turn signal and make an obvious, decisive lane change to the right or left. If the car is already upon you before you notice its presence, take care before making a move to avoid the “shark pursuit” situation described above. When evading a shark, signal early and pause for just an instant (to make sure that the tailing driver isn’t also planning to change into the same lane) before making a definite and decisive move into the other lane. Your actions should clearly communicate your intentions to the other driver so he is fully aware of what moves you intend to make. Info: www.msf-usa.org

ROLLING THUNDER was an idea started by Marine Vietnam Veteran Cpl Ray Manzo, who was bothered
by many of the remains of Vietnam veterans that were being returned home or respectfully buried. There also reports of live prisoners of war (POW) and missing in action (MIA) that were left behind when the war ended.

Ray took a trip to DC in 1987, met Ray took a trip to DC in 1987, met with co-founders, Army Sgt. Major John Holland, Marine 1st Sgt Walt Sides, and Army Sgt. Ted Sampley who are credited with originally starting Rolling Thunder. Manzo also established a friendship with Army Sgt. Artie Muller, who had a similar idea of a demonstration run in DC. The Rolling Thunder 1st Amendment or “Ride for Freedom” demonstration seeks to bring full accountability for POW and MIAs of all U.S. Wars. Manzo turned over Rolling Thunder to Artie Muller in 1992, who founded Rolling Thunder Inc. in 1995 that has more than 90 chapters in the world. After 32 years, Rolling Thunder Inc. said that this RT would be the last in DC. What started in 1988 with roughly 3,000 bikes had grown to over 500,000. Saturday would be a busy day at Harley-Davidson of Washington, DC (actually in Ft. Washington, MD). I rode to the dealership where a crowd was lined up inside the dealership waiting to see the “Saluting Marine,” SSgt. Tim Chambers. I asked him what he was going to do after this last event. “Take a break,” he said. This would be his 18th year saluting at the event. Outside the dealership, a band was playing whose leader introduced Mathew Modine, who played “Joker” in the movie, Full Metal Jacket. My main attention was directed to a gated area of Rolling Thunder Inc. participants, where RT Inc. Executive Director, Artie Muller and actor Robert Patrick were. Robert starred in numerous movies and TV shows and is remembered
BTR 18 | BORNTORIDE.COM
as the T1000 cop that regenerated in Terminator 2. His last TV show was the FBI agent in “Scorpion” and a newly released movie with John Travolta and Morgan Freeman, The Poison Rose. He also rides to DC from California, where he was President of one of the oldest motorcycle clubs, “Boozefighters MC” (motto: “The Original Wild Ones”) that was made famous in the Brando movie, The Wild One. Their other motto is: “a drinking club with a motorcycle problem.” Robert was interviewing Artie on camera as I listened to some of the ideas that RT Inc. was proposing. The costs of RT were getting prohibitive and lack of cooperation with the Pentagon police were some of the issues. Artie said that money could be better spent on Veterans. Each Rolling Thunder chapter could have their own venue in each State. He had also been approached by some Senators/ Congressmen of various States asking to hold a similar venue in their State. “Maybe a ride from one State, ending at another, could be a possibility. We will see if they back it up.” As Robert was taking to Artie, a tweet from President Trump came in that offered to help in any way to continue RT in DC. I handed it to Robert, who read it to Artie. Artie said he would be glad to meet with the President, but right now this was the last RT in DC. Another tweet came in later in the day where the President basically said this was not the last Rolling Thunder, but this is up to Rolling Thunder organizers. Artie said he hoped over 875,000 would show up this year. I met a lot of riders who came just because this was the last ride. Estimates were from 900,000 to 1 1/2 million bikes.
We left the dealership and rode downtown to the venue of vendors, called “Thunder Alley.” The whole city was packed with bikes. The official RT shirts had already run out Saturday noon and we scrambled for any kind of memorabilia for the last RT. There are numerous Harley dealerships surrounding DC that ride into the Pentagon staging areas. They leave at different times so as not to jam up the Pentagon arrivals. That Sunday, we decided to ride in again from H-D of Washington. We left earlier this year at 8:30 AM. The attendance was so large, there were three groups from this dealership and the motor officer leading us got lost on the Capital beltline and made a wrong turn. We turned around at a median, as he led the 1,000 in our group back past where we started. He was the only escort and the bikes behind him didn’t know where to go, as he left them to wave off and block traffic. When we came over the bridge into DC, we had to wind around stopped traffic, who after the officer went by, was trying to move back into traffic. We finally made it across the bridge and were joined by a group from the Laurel, MD, dealership. We were supposed to have gone to the main North Pentagon lot, but because of the delay, didn’t even make it to the South lot and ended up in abandoned parking areas outside the South lot. Bikes started at noon from the Pentagon, as a symbolic B-52, flew by the Pentagon. Rolling Thunder was named after the B-52 bombing runs during the Vietnam War. We finally started moving into the South lot, merging with others at 4:30 PM. Bikes were hot, we were hot, thighs were
burning, but we finally made it out of the lot, across Memorial Bridge, past the Saluting Marine at which I stopped and shouted, “Oorah,” to which, he in turn responded. Riding down Constitution Ave., by the Capitol and back on Independence Ave., past crowds that slapped our hands, we continued on near the Vietnam Wall and on to Arlington National Cemetery to visit with my family who is buried there. Was this the last Rolling Thunder XXXIII in DC? That remains to be seen.

Cerebral Tango
Affinities (plural noun): a spontaneous or natural liking or sympathy for someone or something; a similarity of characteristics suggesting a relationship, especially a resemblance in structure between animals, plants, or languages; relationship, especially by marriage as opposed to blood ties; the degree to which a substance tends to combine with another. I’m going out on a limb this month and putting a bit more of myself out there than I am used to. Comments, good or bad are all welcome. I’d like to know what you think! When I see these kinds of pictures online, I feel something inside me screaming “Hell yeah, that’s the kind of bond I want with someone!” The kind of bond when you are with that someone there is nothing else that matter. You get lost in each other. You abandon yourself completely with a total and utter purpose to become better at inspiring one another. You are game for anything and everything because there is absolute mutual trust and respect … and chemistry of course! Let’s not forget about the power of chemistry. LOL I don’t know about you, but when someone I care about rides on the back of my Night Train with me going 80mph+, it’s
freaking magic. I used to tell my ex “I love it cause I don’t have to listen to you and I don’t have to talk.” Probably the main reason she is now my ex (LOL). Thing is, when you ride as a couple, it truly feels like a different dimension. A gateway for the souls to meet. I can joke about what I used to say to my ex, but every time we came back from riding it was like an infusion of peace in our tumultuous and shaky relationship. Shoulda did a lot more riding honey! Heck, when we did split, I remember looking for opportunities to take passengers I barely knew just so I could experience riding as a couple again. Problem is, if you are with someone who does not share your passion for riding, they will never understand, and you will end up in a dead-end. Or, if you are one of the lucky ones and you are with someone who loves or at least cares about riding, count your blessings my friend and make sure you nurture that. I logged about 300 hours of combined counseling, homework, and reading after my divorce. No one forced me. It was my choice. I just wanted to get to the bottom of the issues so I could have and offer a better future. I don’t care what some of you may think. It was worth it. One of the

most important things I learned was about was “affinities.” Yep, my counselor boldly declared “opposites attract yes because they initially feel they can complete each other. Truth is, when the monotony of life happens, after a while, they realize they don’t have much at all in common. That is usually a painful realization giving birth to the end of the relationship.” Affinities between two individuals are essentially common interests and passions they both have and share. It unifies them. This truly is solid foundations for a decent mutually rewarding joint life. If you talk with anyone who rides that has ridden as a couple on the same bike or on separate bikes, their faces light up when they talk about the experience. The experience is like “cerebral tango”; a freaking hot, classy, elegant, bold, sexy, fearless and powerful dance between two souls. Reminds me of the movie Scent of a Woman with Al Pacino where he plays Lt Colonel Frank Slade, a blind and highly decorated military vet. As Lt Colonel Frank Slade said, “If you make a mistake and get all tangled up, you just tango on.” Ride on then folks, and happy tango.

The Man, The Myth, The Musician – and More!
Anytime that I get to talk with a musician that has talent, style, and substance, I jump at that opportunity. But, when you talk with a musician that is also a family and businessman who loves the Lord and spreads His glory, then it’s an altogether added bonus for me! Tommy and I spent a nice afternoon talking about those aforementioned attributes. Since I’m all about the music, I needed to start our conversation about
“If someone is looking for a particular color or style of flooring, I bring my 17’ box truck to their home and we are able to pull out samples of flooring – of every kind – and see what works in terms of color, style, texture, etc. in their home or business.”
his band, Nuthin’ Fancy, a Lynyrd Skynyrd tribute band. “We chose the name of their 3rd album for the band name. We do a little over a 2-hour concert that Lynyrd Skynyrd did in 1976-1977. There are 10 people in this band; I’m the lead singer, then we have three lead guitar players, keyboards, drummer, bass, and three female backup singers including my youngest daughter, Allie.” In addition to Nuthin’ Fancy, Tommy also has another band called, The Tommy Roxx Band, where there are six people in the band. “The difference is we don’t have the three backup singers and the third guitar player. We are a general southern rock band and half of our set is Lynyrd Skynyrd since that music is such a central part of who we are.” They play songs from the Allman Brothers, Outlaws, Molly Hatchet, and a number of other mind-blowing southern rock bands.
So, who is TOMMY ROXX? “I always wanted to get into music when I was a teenager. But at 19 I had sex for the first time and became a dad. I was raised to do the right thing, so my dreams of starting a band had to go on the back shelf in the basement and lock the door.” Once his baby
was born, Tommy found a job installing carpeting. Once karaoke hit the streets, Tommy would go out with friends and sing at karaoke bars. “So many people came up to me and asked me if I was in a band. I would tell them no. Over time, I was

encouraged to start a band. So I did!” From Virginia, Tommy moved to Florida in 2003. “Within a year of being in Florida, I got a band together and was playing around town in different bars. We just kept getting better every year! I worked hard practicing and promoting, watching videos of Ronnie Van Zant of his singing and style – and just kept at it. Most of everything I have done in music has been in the last 15 years.” Tommy also writes his own songs and released his debut album “Freedom Isn’t Free” in 2013. When it comes to his faith, Tommy stands tall and proud when it comes to the Lord. “I was very active when I was a young boy, going to church every Sunday and bible study. But when I got into my teens, I wandered away from my faith. At 23, I was approached by a couple that drove home the ‘relationship’ point of my faith. I knew I had been ignoring God for
years. I gave up the drugs, cigarettes, and drinking in 1985 and I rededicated my life to the Lord. In 1990, I went to a mission conference and heard the call to preach. In 1992 I preached my first sermon at a homeless ministry in Washington, DC and started preaching to bikers in 1993. In 1996, I became an ordained minister. I did the biker bible study for 25 years. I recently stopped the biker bible study because I needed a break. The bands are doing great, my flooring company is extremely stressful, kids, grandkids, my home, and wife, etc. I was also the local and National President of the Prodigal Sons Motorcycle Club. Something had to give. I really felt that the Lord was blessing the bands and I needed to step back and let others step in.” When it comes to his “other” work, Tommy owns and operates Douthat Flooring (DoThat Flooring!). He’s been in this business for 38 years! This is a shop-at-home business where he brings the flooring store to you! It’s a flooring store that makes house calls. “If someone is looking for a particular color or style of flooring, I bring my 17’ box truck to their home and together, we are able to pull out samples of flooring – of every kind – and see what works well in terms of color, style, texture, etc. in their home or business.” Once the customer finds what they want, then Tommy sets up a time for his crews to go out and complete the job. Last thoughts, Tommy? “I’m Tommy and I’m a Christian. My faith is who I am in each category: Rocker, Biker, Family Man, Business Owner, etc. A true relationship with Christ becomes a part of who you are in any and every aspect of your life. Keep the faith, but not to yourself.” Thank you, Tommy, for sharing your impressive story with the readers of Born To Ride magazine! Susan Hurst

What a way to start the month of October than with a trip to the mountains of eastern Tennessee for the TENNESSEE MOTORCYCLES and MUSIC REVIVAL at the Loretta Lynn Ranch in Hurricane Mills. This year, it’s October 10th thru the 13th, I had the pleasure of attending this great and unique event last year. What an awesome location this event was—southwest of
Nashville with some great riding around the entire area. There was RV and tent camping galore with lots of space on the beautiful grounds of the Ranch. The Motorcycle portion of the Revival offered all kinds of fun and excitement from the BC Moto Invitational, Hillbilly Flat Track Racing, Rhett Rotten’s Wall of Death and all kinds of Biker related vendors. Harley-Davidson and Indian Motorcycles

had their Demo trucks set up offering test rides on the new models. Then there was the BC Moto Invitational, which featured over 40 Bike Builders from around the country and their incredible 2-wheeled rides set on display in a beautiful horse barn, with a custom bike in each and every stall. Walking through the barn and viewing these amazing machines and meeting the builders was certainly BORNTORIDE.COM | BTR 55
a different way to look at a motorcycle build-off, but yet very entertaining to say the least. There were many other activities on the grounds to check out beside the Bike related ones, like the Loretta Lynn Western Town featuring a Country Store, the Loretta Lynn Museum, Loretta’s original Tour Bus, the Art Gallery and Camp Store at Stagecoach Hill. There was even a gun range where you BTR 56 | BORNTORIDE.COM
could shoot everything from Carbines, Shotguns, Belt-fed and Sub-machine guns! Plus, there were Specialty Food Trucks offering all different types of yummy menu choices and of course Cold Beer and full liquor bars to help wet your whistle throughout the entire event. As for the Music portion, there were so many talented musicians and groups to enjoy throughout the entire Revival
on stage at the famous Loretta Lynn Roadhouse. All in all, the TENNESSEE MOTORCYCLES and MUSIC REVIVAL offered something for everyone and I want to thank the promoters Carrie Repp and Buck Shaw for having me along for the Ride! more weeks of darkness. Soon it will be your spring and you can start learning how to walk and do other things again thru rehab.’ Mike replied, “Maybe it’ll help me rehab something else to make Reann happy. She really has done a lot for me in the past two months and deserves something special, not just recognition. I have a few ideas in mind, but it all depends when I can get around without a walker or a cane.” She told me, “Awww Mike, these past few months have brought us really close together. Someday soon you’ll be back on two wheels but first, it’s two feet. When you get to that point, I’ll see about gettin’ Spyke’s wings in the wind, with your knees in the breeze.” I cackle, ‘Mike, I’ve enjoyed the time together. Even though we missed going to the beach this summer, you have taught me how to surf in the pool, without any waves. It’s not as fun as surfing at the beach ‘cuz I like playing in the sand too! Speaking about enjoying time together, your friends up north: Lou Falco owner of Scooter Haven and Valerie Smith owner of Rider Now, have come together to put on a shindig at the Haven on October 4th, 5th, and 6th. Despite what Mother Nature threw at us a few Wednesdays ago, Ron, Mary Ellen along with the group from Lifting Hearts, and Quaker Steak & Lube did an excellent job at your first benefit. Due to Happy end of summer my BTR friends. Some of you will be the negativities of the situation, a lot of people couldn’t make it or overjoyed, some of you could care less, but I know Mike is definitely didn’t even know about it. They were asking if you were going to do looking forward to fall. Not the tumbling kind mind you, but every day something else and that’s when Lou and Valerie stepped up. rehabbing is a day closer to the healing date. Ron has made a wonderful ad to cover most of the info on the Mike babbles, “Oh yes my medicinal companion. You’ve spent a event. Reserve a cabin or get your own knees in the breeze and lot of time bedside, poolside, and tableside with me. The doc took come on up for the weekend. I’ll be looking for a few of you to get a look at my screws, bolts, and plates’ shadow in the last set of my wings in the wind and your wheels rolling down the road to cure X-rays.” He said, ‘I’m like Punxsutawney Phil and you only have six my loss of wind therapy. In the beginning (of the summer) there was light
And then, the skies grew dark and angry rain and storms came down drenching us in voluminous amounts of water that seems to be incessant and often dangerous. No, this isn’t an adaptation, translation, or convolution of a scripture that could be found in the Bible; it is simply the observation of an old fool who has lived here in ‘paradise’ for many, many years. We all deal with it and in the summer sometimes daily, but when you are on your motorcycle it can often become quite dangerous at times. Historically the deluge starts at about the time when we are heading home from work. Despite having a nice rain suit, a (non-required) helmet and a set of selfcleaning goggles, the angry water can get so heavy that we often think that we should just park somewhere and wait it out. But
this alternative can in some cases become financially draining – especially if you decide to wait it out at the local gentlemen’s club or tavern. So, as a solution to the situation, I recently decided to add a snorkel to my rain attire so that I can strategically place it over my shoulder and behind my head so I don’t inhale a ton of rain and road backwash. Both are problematic and add to the misery of the otherwise enjoyable journey back home. I know – it’s just food for thought – but for some reason I believe it may just work. I will get back to you on this, or you can always reach out to me through the magazine, website, or radio show to tell me that my ideas are idiotic. It’s all good. We all need to think about being safe out there on the road. It’s too bad that we have to share the road with people who

have no consideration for others. Especially bikers. If I had one dollar for every time that I have heard “I didn’t see the motorcycle,” I would be a millionaire and not have to worry about trying to make a buck by working and such. I even tried playing the lottery. That never seems to play out too well, so that is likely the reason I call it a “stupid tax” and refuse to spend my last dollar to try to get lucky. I never expected to be rich anyhow, so I just keep dragging on and trying to buy groceries. I know that I am not the only one in this situation so we will all just keep keeping on. Speaking of keeping on. The only thing that’s worse than getting drenched every day is the impending possibility of doom due to the hurricane season. Should we be unfortunate enough to have a hurricane hit our precious state, the consequences could be dangerous and as you all know – historically disastrous. I remember years back when I wrote about my big hurricane parties fueled by lots of beer, wing restaurant girls, and the occasional employee of a gentlemen’s club. All that aside, it is truly a situation that can be at the very least – worrisome. I have a simple plan for evacuation should the worst happen: “Grab beer – run like hell” – it’s a plan that seems to make sense and will likely keep me protected from whatever impending disaster the storm brings. I typically won’t run away from a cat 1 or cat 2 hurricane but there is always a possibility of bad luck during this time of year. Just keep your eyes and ears open and do whatever is necessary to survive! The potential season only lasts for a few more months so for now, we can just pay our dues riding in the obligatory daily complementary bike wash. Just avoid the ‘spin cycle’ after the dry cycle. … Until next month, ‘speed safely and tune in to the radio show!’ CRAVEN BORNTORIDE.COM | BTR 69
Christian Motorcyclists Association, Do You Have a Right to be Angry? As we ride and enjoy being in the wind, we occasionally experience dangerous driving habits of those around us. No matter how well we watch the road, and the traffic on it, it only takes one person in a hurry to ruin our day. Just this morning I watched a cager aggressively weave his vehicle in and out of the traffic. The sad part is that in five miles of hogging the road and cutting people off that driver had only added 2 car lengths to his position. In that early morning travel, many folks were probably angered by the assertive driving. One thing that really frustrates me is when I am on my bike, at a stoplight, and someone in a big car or four-wheeldrive truck pulls right up behind me. I know they can see me because my bike is loaded with various lights. My bet is that they have never given thought to what would happen if their foot slipped off the brakes, or they accidentally hit the gas pedal. I usually give the throttle a quick blip and roll forward a few feet to add to the visibility of my bike. You no doubt know what is coming next; they roll their vehicle forward, right behind BTR 70 | BORNTORIDE.COM
my bike. Do I get angry, do I get frustrated, and is my ride no longer fun and enjoyable? All I’m trying to do is to soak up the beauty of nature around me, while someone is carelessly putting my life in danger! Then I remember that I don’t know everything that is going on in the lives around me, that careless driver may be upset about something in their life. I also have to reflect and realize that I had done the same thing years ago before I knew better. Sometimes we must be careful to get all the information and what is really happening in other’s lives. Perhaps we can then find our way to be part of the solution rather than part of the problem! In the Bible, in Jonah 4:9 says, “But God said to Jonah, “Do you have a right to be angry?” Jonah was upset that things were not going his way and God pointed out that Jonah had his focus in the wrong place. Jonah had to learn that it is not what happens to us that matters (tailgaters and cagers pulling too close to the bike), it’s also what happens in us that matters. What happens to us that’s beyond our control is not as important as how we respond to those events. How do we overcome our anger or our tempers? We must learn to be more like Jesus and be more intentionally focused to show His love through our actions. It is then that we can learn to live and enjoy life more and keep our emotions under control. Follow Him and He will bless you!
