Behind every great custom motorcycle build, you’ll probably find a great photographer. So when many builders from around the U.S. need the perfect lensman to show off in print or online, they call upon the services of commercial motorcycle photographer Florida’s Erick Runyon.
BTR 12 | BORNTORIDE.COM
After nearly 20yrs behind the lens, shooting lifestyle, glamour and fitness for several national men’s publications, women’s fitness publications as well as swimwear and activewear clothing companies, Erick combined his passion for photography with his lifelong love for motorcycles and found his true calling.“ Full time motorcycle photography came to me as a ’happy accident’ about seven years ago. I’d been riding since High School and I guess I had more than a passing interest with them. While working as a lifestyle and fashion photographer, I brought my Harley to Alain Bernrad of Santiago Chopper for some custom work. We became friends
“As a college student, I was told to put down the camera and that I should start thinking about a real career” and he asked me to photograph him for a new TV series called ‘Cafe Racer’. I hit it off with the production company and started shooting more stills for the series. Since that day almost 10 years ago, I started contributing on a regular basis for Discovery Networks, then Velocity and now the MotorTrend Network. As a college student, I was told to put down the camera and that I should start thinking about a real career. After that motivational sting, I was determined to find my path and use my passion for photography to guide me through life. The work isn’t about ‘money’, its about satisfying the inner creative soul. After being featured in a Velocity Channel Documentary where they described me as ‘one of the worlds top motorcycle photographers’. I took pride in the fact that I

didn’t put down my camera all those years ago as suggested. I was at least able to pay my bills doing what I loved. Though his images are larger than life, he prefers to keep his ego in check. If you ask, the work is never about ‘himself’,“It’s all about photographing bikes and having the ability to bring these builders’ work to the masses. I envy the talent and creativity these people have and I get to live vicariously BTR 16 | BORNTORIDE.COM

through them. With the small amount of talent I have, I hope I can shed some light on the amount of time, energy and talent it takes to create these bikes. I think of my work as a way to showcase the talents of others and not myself. I don’t take any of this for granted, by the way. I enjoy it all and I do it solely for the passion of the motorcycling scene.” Erick has joined Born To Ride Motorcycle Media as their Creative
Director. Owner Ron Galletti has followed Ericks work for years and commented, “having Erick onboard with us has been exsplosive! It’s always been my passion and mission to document the biker lifestyle, but Erick’s lens brings that documentation to life! In anera of digital media it’s important to me that our readers, viewers and fans are sensationalized by the images we capture and Erick’s

There is a huge secret that you may not know of, located in beautiful Ft. Myers, Florida. Haus of Trikes and Bikes is your absolutely one-stop shop for bike repair, rental bikes, new and used motorcycles, and their specialty – building trikes.
Haus of Trikes is one of the largest trike conversion company’s in Florida. “I grew up with trike companies like Motor Trike, California Sidecar, Hannigan, and Road Smith. We all met each other on the manufacturing/distribution-side because I did shows with my trikes and these guys tried to push the conversion trike market. They knew me from day one as a manufacturer and importer and that I already had an established shop. That’s when I became I dealer for them.”
Manfred went through all the trainings at these manufacturer’s factories. “We are all trained, got certified, and became specialized trike technicians since day 1. We are deeply rooted in the trike business which I am very proud of.” In general, many folks that want to own/ ride a trike don’t know much about them other than they want one. And because we offer so many different Trike Kit Manufacturers, we take our time with every customer to find out what he or she is looking for. “All of our kits are independent suspension, air ride, rake kits, etc. We have at least 6-8 different BTR 34 | BORNTORIDE.COM
kits for Honda Goldwings and 4-5 kits for a Harley Motorcycles,as well as for Indians, Kawasaki, Yamaha and even for Scooters. I have different set ups where I can make this trike special for you. You don’t have options when you purchase a stock, manufactured trike, other than letting the sales person know what color you want.” Mike mentioned that they have 11 trike kits on order at this time! “We can make a trike specific to the needs of the customer. If, for example, they can’t use the foot shifter, we can install an electric hand shifter. Or if you need a bracket for a wheelchair, our fabrication shop can build that as well. Manfred is a hands-on shop owner, I still build trikes on my own as well. I have 14 lifts in the shop. We are so busy that I need to step in and help out with all the orders that are coming in. I train my mechanics, one-on-one. I make sure that the knowledge is never leaving the company.” Manfred is at his shop every day! “We have mechanics that repair Honda, Kawasaki, BMW, Suzuki, we have fabricator guys, and the old-school Harley dudes. We are booked solid for weeks. There is a
reason why people come here. No one build trikes around here the way we build trikes. I’m also building Indian trikes for several Indian Dealerships in Florida with California Sidecar and Motortrike Kits.

Amber Balcaen
Underdog Bloodline in NASCAR “True love will make you do anything to make things work,” she declares boldly with confidence. She and her boyfriend will set up FaceTime, so they see each other while watching the exact same movie at the exact same time. It’s just like realtime without boundaries as they will read books to each other through FaceTime to facilitate discussion. If you haven’t thought of it already, I am sure you know a lot of couples who would do well to introduce reading to each other into their relationship. I did it. I still do it and I tell you it is magic. Amber’s history has seen her ride dirt bikes and some road bikes which she truly enjoys, but she spends most of her time Gamble everything for love, if you’re a true human being. If not, leave this gathering. Half-heartedness doesn’t reach into majesty. You set out to find God, but then you keep stopping for long periods at mean-spirited roadhouses. ~ Rumi I think even Rumi would agree we could substitute the word “love” here for “passion.” Yes, Amber Balcean is known as an underdog. She comes from a bloodline all too familiar to me which is the good old blue-collar breed. Amber is packed with passion for what she does in ways that command respect. She comes from the school of “hard-knocks” and this young lady will spare no effort nor take any prisoner to reach her objectives. As I spoke with her, she was busy in her hometown in North Carolina running from meeting to meeting. She is on a mission seeking sponsorship for the next ARCA Series under the NASCAR banner. She already secured a couple good endorsements “1stphorm,” which is a food supplement company and “Tavia,” which provides a feminine product subscription service that helps keep girls in developing countries in school. She is looking for sponsors with a positive message in their brand that aligns with her personal values. Amber Balcaen is a 3rd generation race car
driver from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. In 2016, Amber made Canadian history when she became the 1st Canadian female to win a NASCAR Sanctioned race in the USA. At 27 years of age, Amber has successfully leveraged her racing platform to be one of motorsport’s largest female influencers – inspiring and motivating people around the world to pursue their dreams, break stereotypes, and have a positive impact on society. In addition to driving race cars, Amber is an active motivational speaker, delivering keynotes across North America. She is also the President of her own company, Amber Balcaen Racing Inc. (ABR). Amber is known as the “underdog of NASCAR,” as she grew up racing on the dirt tracks of Manitoba, overcoming much adversity to make her way into the NASCAR ranks. This 27-year-old speed maniac loves everything related to adrenaline. You name it, she wants it. Her parents are at the top of her list as role models including NASCAR driver Matt DiBenedetto whose story as an underdog resonates with Amber. Spare time is spent with her highschool sweetheart, boyfriend and football player for the Saskatchewan Roughriders in Canada. How do they make the relationship work long distance after several years?

Women’s World
There are so many of us that have lost people close to us. From a spouse, partner, best friend, and family, it doesn’t seem to get any easier. I had the pleasure of speaking with Myra McElhaney who many of you have read her articles in Born To Ride magazine. Well, we are turning the tables and interviewing her about her successful book, “Losing the Love of your Life.” Why did she decide to write this book? “It’s been 10 years since I lost my husband. At this stage in life, I’m meeting more and more women who have lost their spouse. In fact, in the past four months, two of my very close friends just lost their husbands. It seems never-ending.” For many years, Myra had been a corporate trainer, public speaker, and writer. “The articles that I wrote were specific to the groups I worked for. I also participated in compilation books where groups of people write specific chapters for the book. I had participated in these compilation books but had not written a “real” book of my own. After my husband died in 2009, I had been thinking about writing a book about women in business. Once he died, I couldn’t face looking at that book again. It brought up too many memories. Because of my business networking, I knew of someone that connects professionals to other professionals – in my case, obtaining an agent to help me with my book.”Myra got very active in social media with her networking, speaking engagements, and upcoming book project. “I didn’t want to be that depressed, moping widow. Folks were reaching out to me telling me stories about friends who had recently lost a loved one, sharing their stories with me. These folks wanted me to reach out and personally speak with those grieving individuals. I found out that I was giving them the same kinds of advice, saying the same, comforting things to them, recommendations to read specific articles, etc. Because writing and speaking was something that I already did, it was an
easy jump for me to write a book about my experience.” With Myra’s corporate background, it was always teaching leadership skills or how to create connections – that sort of thing. “I wanted to make sure that my book was a memoir – telling MY story. I believe that we learn from other people’s stories. When a story resonates with us, it doesn’t have to tell us how to use this information.
It’s more of an ‘Oh, she did that! Maybe I can do that, too!’ I also believe that when you’re widowed, you don’t totally lose your sense of humor. It’s ok to laugh through the tears. I wanted this book to be a test of my humor, warm and uplifting, and just one woman possibly telling a story that resonates with the reader. I tell the story with love and humor.” After the book was written, Myra started speaking at women’s groups around the country trying to help rebuild these women’s personal and social lives. “As you personally know, Susan, once you’ve lost your spouse, your social life changes. You’re no longer a couple with your friends. In fact, there is a chapter in the book called, ‘Was My Invitation Lost in the Mail?”’ Some of her Chapter Titles are excellent! In bed with Jose Cuervo, You Talking To Me?, My God, My God! Why Has Thou Forsaken Me?, Shock, Denial, and Prozac, Don’t Cry in the Liquor Store, I Have Strange Bedfellows, Layers of Lost, Condolences and Sympathies, Without
This Ring, and other great titles. As Myra was writing her book, she found that she was definitely healing within. “Six years after my husband died, I started writing the book. I thought I was pretty healed. But writing about those things brought up a lot of feelings and emotions that had not really healed. So writing and organizing the book was cathartic.” Myra found, from talking with so many people over the years, that the first year after a loved one dies, the wife/ husband wants to memorialize the late spouse. They want to build the house they planned on building together, build a monument, start a foundation – do something. That need to immortalize them tends to go away after the first couple of years. “After Phil had been gone for a while, many people thought I would get back into my corporate work. But what worked for ME was getting involved in non-profit work, fundraising, and my own writing projects.” In addition to a few other nonprofits Myra is involved with, she recently became involved on the board of a nonprofit called, Dress for Success. It was interesting to see how much Myra and I had in common; the loss of our husbands, published authors, public speakers, and motorcyclists. We spent a great deal of time sharing our pains and losses and how we were able to find that perfect spot where we heal and move forward. Interspersing humor in our conversation was an added plus! Myra’s book was self-published in 2016. She sells on Amazon and on Facebook Marketplace. If you are interested in reading a great book or giving this book to a friend, I highly recommend you purchase this great book! Thank you, Myra, for a wonderful afternoon discussing “Losing the Love of Your Life.” All of us in your Born To Ride Family love you and thank you for sharing your book with us – and the readership of the magazine! North East Lighthouse Ride
Florida has many lighthouses spread across the state, so I thought it would be great to have nice back road rides incorporating these interesting destinations. I thought I would take a ride from one of my riding guide books “Scenic Rides To Florida Destinations,” and include it in this month’s issue. This ride is in northeast BTR 52 | BORNTORIDE.COM
Florida and actually includes a ferry ride to one of the lighthouses. The total ride is 125 miles and should take you about 4 hrs (not including the time spent at each lighthouse). The ride starts at Amelia Island Lighthouse, one of the oldest lighthouses in Florida. It is located at the northern end For more info: www.finzfinds.wixsite.com
of Amelia Island. The lighthouse was built in 1938 and marks the inlet leading to St. Marys River. The light remains in operation, but the lighthouse structure is now a private residence. The lighthouse is not open to the public, except on Saturdays when the grounds are open for viewing for three hours only. The city also offers tours to the lighthouse twice a month. Continue down the coast to the second of four lighthouses on this ride, the St. Johns River Lighthouse. To get to this lighthouse, you will need to take Ft. George Island - Mayport ferry (May be closed at certain times or days). The St. Johns River Light is a decommissioned lighthouse in Jacksonville, FL, which marked the mouth of the St. Johns River. It is located on the grounds of the Naval Station Mayport. Built in 1858, it was decommissioned in 1929. This lighthouse has a lot of civil war history associated with it. Heading to the south along the coast you will come upon the third lighthouse, the St. Augustine Lighthouse. It is an active and working lighthouse in St. Augustine, FL. It is located at the north end of Anastasia Island and was built around 1872. It is owned by the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum, Inc., a nonprofit maritime museum. The museum is open to the public all year long. Our fourth and final stop is the Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse, the tallest lighthouse in the state. The lighthouse and three keepers’ dwellings have been restored and are open to the public seven days a week. The lighthouse tower is open for climbing. Check out the museum while you are there. If you get out on the back roads with one of my scenic riding guide books, you are going to discover some outstanding hidden pockets of splendor and some great destinations. You will find the roads others miss and see the hidden secrets in Florida. You can order your own riding guide book from my website at www. finzfinds.com. I also have pre-loaded GPS routes for the Harley Boom Box, Garmin, and Tom Tom navigation systems. Until next time remember to stay in the wind on the best back roads in Florida.

As a youngster growing up, we were so fortunate to experience the joy and fun of camping. Every summer, my parents would take us on an adventure to places we would read about in school. Now that I’m older, the thought of getting back into camping – AND taking my motorcycle along – is more intriguing, thanks to my conversation with Marc McAdams of Creative RV Atlanta! Creative RV is an amazing company whose headquarters are located in Chino, California. “We are technically the largest bus sales company in the nation. We specialize in buses also; school buses, church buses, tour buses, etc., 35 years in buses. The RV side of the business is three years old. The way we got into the RV world is through a company called Forest River RV. They are an RV/Bus company (a Warren Buffett Company). They are the third-largest RV manufacturing company in the nation.” Forrest River approached Creative RV asking them to sell the RVs thanks to the reputation, manpower, facilities, etc. of Creative RV. “We have locations in Chino, CA, Washington state, Arizona, Atlanta, BTR 56 | BORNTORIDE.COM
Jacksonville, Florida, and a facility in Pennsylvania.” Marc was hired to run the RV side of the business. “I came from Maryland to Georgia. I am the manager for the east coast. My job is to build up the business on the east coast. There is another guy that mirrors my job out on the west coast. This year in May, we had matched the number in Atlanta from last year. We doubled our numbers before this year was over – thanks to the biker community!”
Travel & Adventure, The RV Lifestyle Coincides with the Biker Lifestyle
Marc was quick to mention that their success was due, in part, to Ron Galletti of Born To Ride. “It’s not through natural leads like Craig’s List, RV Trader, our website, etc. It’s because we are in the motorcycle community. We do bike events and did a Born To Ride event with Ron at the Great
American Motorcycle Show here in Atlanta, showcasing our toy haulers for bikers. Having a toy hauler AND your motorcycle can make all the difference in the world when you’re on a trip. “A lot of bikers have never been in a toy hauler. At our shows, we expose them to the toy hauler lifestyle and understanding that if at age 60, for example, you’re going to Sturgis, you don’t need to be riding. Having a toy hauler, you have your “motel,” your bike is not in the elements or in the threat of getting stolen or damaged, and you are living in luxury.” Most floor plans are pre-arranged. You can deviate from an established floor plan; if you want a king-sized bed versus a queen. But, if you want to get into changing color schemes, it’s not cost-effective. “All floor plans are going to have the same tank capacity. But the manufacturers have gotten away from doing one-off units. It’s a road we prefer not to go down because the costs are substantially more to the customer.” Toy haulers start at $22,000. This is a 26’ rig standing strong at 5,000 pounds. “You can put two Harleys in this rig AND it can be towed with a Ford F150/Chevy 1500

pickup truck! Payments are really low when purchasing a new toy hauler. It’s simple interest with no pre-payment penalties. If your taxes are done properly, you can write off the first 5 years of interest because the IRS sees RVs as a home.” In order for the IRS to see this as a home, the RV has to have a bathroom, kitchen, and a place to sleep. It’s tax-deductible as a second home! Under $50,000 you can finance up to 15 years, over $50,000 you can finance up to 20 years. The Vengeance 5th wheeler, tri-axle RV (my personal favorite) is the most popular unit Marc sells. Selling at around $56,000, payments can be in the neighborhood of $400 or so a month. Marc explained, “Our price point starts at the low $20s to $100,000. We can fit any economic situation including finding the right RV for you and your truck.” Marc is a rider, owning a Hayabusa motorcycle. Technically, it’s the fastest production bike made, and he loves riding it! “I started riding at the age of eight with dirt bikes in Maryland where I grew up.” Why a toy hauler? “The RV lifestyle coincides with the biker lifestyle. Three of my new RV/toy hauler customers
just returned from Sturgis. They were all together and met new people at the campsites they stayed at. In fact, they sent me pictures of the little town they all created at this campsite! They didn’t need to get a hotel every night, they stayed in their RV, they were out of the elements because they were in their trucks, they get their bikes out and rode, came back to their little town with their little house, and it all just comes together. You find yourself seeking out other places to go! You want to be free and see stuff that you wouldn’t normally see as a typical person.” Normally, our vacations are based around an air flight and a rented car. Marc clarified, “You are limited. If the airport is a bit away from the ‘fun stuff,’ the best food, the best of America, you’re not going to see it because you’re basing a trip around that airport. Your hotel is in conjunction with the airport – and you’re limited. You have to check out at a certain time, you can’t bring your dog, you’re limited on how many people can stay in one room, etc. You have a rental car. You don’t have your stuff in your car, you may smoke but can’t in a rental car, you may have a limited amount
of miles you can drive. Again, you’re restricted. With your own! toy hauler, you can avoid all the stuff we just mentioned and do what you what, when you want! It changes the whole outlook by taking time off.” Quick weekenders are the most fun. If you own an RV, you can jump in the truck, drag the RV and head out to a place 45 minutes from home! It may cost you less than $100 for the weekend! Last thoughts today, Marc? “I’d like to convey that we are RVers. We live the lifestyle and we are bikers. We know how to maximize the fun level. When we share something with you, we are telling you the truth. This is our passion. Hopefully, it will be yours too! Why get caught in a torrential downpour on your motorcycle and stay at a nasty hotel? An RV will eliminate that trouble.” Be sure to tell Marc that you read this story in Born To Ride magazine. You will receive a unique Born To Ride pricing when you purchase a toy hauler at this event or at their showroom! Thank you, Marc, for sharing your story with the readers of Born To Ride magazine! Craven Moorehead Celebration Of Life
R.I.P. Craven Moorehead Your Words Will Live On Forever
Craven Moorehead
As a writer, I occasionally run into certain situations that absolutely prevent me from making a definitive decision regarding the piece of prose that I am working on. This often blocks me from making the best presentation of a column that I do for any particular entity. As a run of the mill poor redneck trailer trash biker, I often don’t see things ahead on the road. At certain times you may have a destination in mind for the things that you must accomplish. Sometimes everything goes smoothly and you go gather all the things required for the task and simply return home or to the job site. On other occasions the regular daily process of obtaining that particular laundry list of items may be cut short due to a vendor’s lack of stock or perhaps when other unforeseen obstacles rear their ugly heads. I have a myriad of examples but recently a few come to mind. I may have discussed in the past the lack of availability of walls for sale at Wal-Mart. I also indicated that there were no steins on sale at Stein-Mart. Everyone already knows that you can’t buy a home at Home Depot or an office at Office Depot so I refuse to continue my simplistic diatribe regarding misleading corporate names. I’m not a real big fan of major corporations anyhow so I can’t try to suggest a better title for those outlets. Either way, we all must obtain the things needed to accomplish the task at hand so when you know the necessity and have the wherewithal to get the items required, you simply venture out and acquire the goods. Once I needed to get a couch for the trailer. Guests who had the nuts to visit the trailer park (this includes Mike and Spyke) were getting tired of sitting on the old greasy milk crates that I use for working on motorcycles and other ‘high altitude’ work, so I took my old truck and went to a used furniture store to attempt to make a swimmingly wonderful deal on a slightly used sofa that I had seen sitting in front of the place as I was riding by on the bagger. I mean, it looked pretty good and I suppose that the price was reasonable,
but why did the proprietor try to bundle the deal with an “Occasional Chair”??? I didn’t need (and didn’t have room for) anything except the sofa. Besides that—“What the hell is an Occasional Chair?” I asked. For some reason, the owner of the business couldn’t come up with a good answer and suggested that it was something that only was used every now and then by people that didn’t desire to sit upon the floor, as was the custom in his country. I figured all this out pretty quickly and left with only the couch. I just couldn’t get the concept of the additional furniture that would be used only ‘occasionally.’ Besides, I’m no slave to fashion or décor so I left befuddled regarding the suggestion that I would need such a piece. The ‘Occasional Sheriff’ on the other hand is something that I am somewhat familiar with. I remember a time when I acted as the ‘designated dummy’ that was obligated me to go fetch some brew for a party. I went to a liquor store that had a pretty good deal on But Light and I was able to load six 18 packs on the bagger. Yeah, I admit that it looked kinda funny, but I had used a bunch of bungee cords and a short piece of rope to load the brew on the rear seat and luggage rack. On a dark back road a good distance from town, I was simply cruising along at the obligatory 10 miles over the speed limit when I was spied by the ‘occasional sheriff.’ Usually, no law enforcement personnel ever hang out around this area due to the lack of ‘business’ to be done in this vicinity. But I suppose that this wasn’t my lucky day. I was surprised when I saw the blue lights come on, largely because I wasn’t going all that fast and I never worried about DUI or anything else because I had only consumed a couple of beers before I went on the run. But as usual the occasional sheriff had that text-book list of demands. “Driver License, Insurance, Immigration Card and keep yer hands where I can see ‘em”… I’m just sitting there on the bike on the side of the road while he checks all my credentials and when comes back he had some interesting questions: “Do you know why I stopped you?” To which I responded “Uhhh, I guess cause you wanted to check out my really cool bike” (A moment of silence) “Boy, you gonna drink all this beer by yerself?” Well, probably not a good answer but I quipped “Damn, I hope so!” (A longer moment of silence) After what felt like an hour, he handed me back my license and said “I know you ain’t right but have a safe night, and don’t try to drink all that friggin beer by yourself!” I said thanks and “remember an 18 pack is only a good start!” I haven’t seen any other occasional sheriffs in that area again, but I realized that everyone should keep their eyes open! (Including myself). Now that the terrors of Halloween are over, we must prepare ourselves for the most horrifying holiday of all which is commonly called Thanksgiving. This particular celebration is always loaded with family and friends who really don’t want to do anything other than fight. I have written before about the horrors of this special day, and the haunts of Halloween pale in comparison to the zombies, ghosts and miscreants that will try to celebrate you making them dinner—and then destroy your life as you know it, simply because they love you. (Allegedly) Try to make the best of it, and until next month—“Speed Safely!” CRAVEN

Instead, we enjoyed a great day of music and Kodak moments with the Jasmine Cain band at Bert’s new location; just across the street from Quaker Steak & Lube. The home of the world-famous Wednesday Night Bike Night. That Sunday, I got to jam with the lead guitarist on his shoulder. Jordan was super excited to have me standing in with him. He even surprised me with blue highlights in his hair. Oh, like he knew I was coming. … My new goal is trying not to miss a good time or a request to play onstage with awesome musicians.’ Mike breaks in, “Yes Spyke, that kind of felt like we’re getting back to normal. But, before I lose my train of thought like old folks do ... I want to step back and thank everybody and I mean EVERYBODY who has helped out. Starting from the top, my beautiful assistant and girlfriend Reann. Ron, Debbie, Shawn, Jesse, Doug, and the whole Born To Ride crew who teamed up with Valerie, Tripp, Shrine Scotty, Cindy, and all the Rider Now promoters. Between Rider Now magazine who went above and beyond in helping out, Fran Haasch, Scooter Haven, BTR, Camelot Beach Resort, Lou Falco, Pat’s Auto Interiors, Steve, Chipper Dave, and all my special friends who made donations, we had some awesome giveaways. This included but was not limited to a 50-inch TV, weekend stays at The Haven and on Clearwater Beach and many liquor/gift baskets.Special thanks to the musical entertainment. Black Sun Circus rocked the house on Friday, the Potbelly Stallions and Bob did an awesome job with sound on Saturday, and many great local artists came out for an open jam on Sunday. Then there was a bonus, The Avengers M/C was staying the weekend and having a regional rally. What a great bunch of brothers and sisters who partook in my crazy biker games, raffles, and enjoyed Happy Turkey month, my BTR friends.
