The Sleepy Commuter You’re riding your motorcycle to work just after sunrise, traveling down a typical suburban street lined with car-filled driveways. As you approach one of these driveways a car begins to move and backs out directly into your path. You brake hard and come to a stop just inches away from the car’s rear bumper. Strategy: Given the hour of day and the type of neighborhood, you could have expected to encounter at least a few drivers backing out of their driveways and heading off to work. Clues include drivers getting into their cars as you approach, or a tell-tale puff of exhaust warning you that the car has been started and is preparing to leave. Watch for brake lights and backup lights, too. If you observe any of the above warning signs, take the following precautions: Slow your pace and prepare to stop, if necessary. Keep your eyes up and cover the front brake lever and rear brake pedal. Stabilize your speed so that if the car does begin to move out into your path, you have sufficient space to stop. If there isn’t room or time to slow to a stop, scan for an escape route to swerve into. If there is no oncoming traffic, swerve to the left; if this route isn’t available, consider swerving to the right.

A Family Tradition Dedicated to Motorcycles
Phil was born on February 24, 1924 in that bastion of football, Green Bay, Wisconsin. His family were cherry farmers since the late 1800s on land awarded to his grandfather in recognition of his service in the Civil War under General Philip Sheridan. In tribute to General Sheridan, the grandfather named a son Philip Sheridan Peterson, Phil’s father. Phil is proud not only be named for his father, but also of the history associated with his name. During WW II, like may of his fellow countrymen, Phil answered the “call to arms” and joined the Navy. He served in the Pacific aboard the destroyer, USS Bearss, which was a member of the escort fleet for the signing of the treaty that ended the war. Phil is understandably proud of this time and remains close to several of his “comrades in arms” to this day. 21 and back from the war, Phil did what he long dreamed of.. he bought a Harley-Davidson® motorcycle! His first Harley® bike was a 1946 WL Harley 45cu (750) that he purchased for $425, money he saved up while in the Navy. Not long afterwards, he married Charlie and began farming. Together they have raised six children. Phil had this “passion” for
BTR 12 | BORNTORIDE.COM
motorcycles and in 1947 he started a motorcycle club. Charlie designed and stitched the club logo. They had meetings and went for rides, sort of an early HOG group. In 1950, at the age of 26, Phil (now with 2 children) could no longer contain his desire to race. Charlie, ever his biggest supporter, agreed that he could try his hand at racing for one year to see where it might lead. Well, that year he won the Minnesota Novice Championship! Phil continued to race, but still kept farming. Name the type of racing and Phil competed: Short Track, Road Race, Hill Climb, TT (Tourist Trophy), Ice Racing, Motorcross, and Drag Racing. He rode on the “Hot Shoe Circuit” for four years and continued racing locally until 1967. During this time he and Charlie became friends with Walter C. Davidson of HarleyDavidson. In 1953, Walter approached Phil about becoming a Harley-Davidson dealer. At first Phil thought that Walter was joking, but he soon realized that he was serious. Even back then Phil loved Florida. He spent a lot of time racing in Florida and had built up a following. Florida? Why Florida? All Harley could offer, responded Walter, was a little, Navy town way, way south...
Key West! The Navy, Harley, and Florida was more than he could resist. So he leased the farm and packed up Charlie and the family (now 4 children) down to Key West. His dealership soon became a hangout for the young men serving in the Navy. Phil, at the ripe “old” age of 30, had become sort of a “Father figure”. Racing was still in his blood and he was sponsored by fellow Harley-Davidson dealer, Billy Temple, up in Miami - a relationship that would lead Phil to where he is today. Change was in the air, Charlie now expecting Drew, missed Wisconsin. So Phil packed up family and returned to the farm. But...he had this agreement with Billy Temple...Phil could buy the Harley-Davidson of Miami dealership when Billy decided to retire. On July 4, 1965 - Billy Temple calls Phil - true to his word: “I’m retiring, are you sure you still want this place? After all, you have a wife and six kids?”... Say no more! Phil got a mortgage and it was back to Florida - Miami this time. Billy turns over the keys, leaves some petty cash in the register and Phil Peterson’s Harley-Davidson of Miami is born.

Phil Peterson’s Key West Poker Run started some 42 years ago as just an idea to drum up some business during a normally slow time of year for his motorcycle business in Miami and Key West. Phil thought if he had a Poker Run to Key West In August and made an event of It, that would do the trick. Phil and a handful of local motorcycle riders, mostly from the Mustang Motorcycle Club decided to try it. The Run started early Saturday morning with sign up at the Miami Store, a ride to Key West hitting five restaurants or bars to draw a card and arriving In Key West in time to get cleaned up for the Awards Dinner, Dance and Bike Show. The best hands would win prizes and as an added attraction they had a Best Dressed Contest (where
BTR 14 | BORNTORIDE.COM
riders and their passengers would wear matching boots, pants and shirts with their helmets painted to match their bikes) so not only was the bike judged but also the riders were judged for the best looking couple and they were awarded trophies. On Sunday morning they would have a Field Meet showing off their rider skills and scored for different events i.e. slow race, roll a barrel with your front tire, ride over the teeter-totter plank etc. Competing for trophies) In those days there were small well organized riding clubs with a lot of camaraderie and friendly competition between clubs. Everyone would return home on Sunday afternoon and this went on for many years in the early days of the Poker Run. Today the Poker Run has grown into a major event with police estimates
of ten to fifteen thousand riders. In the recent years it has managed to sell out all of the Key West Hotels with more and more riders staying on nearby Islands and traveling into Key West for the day or party that they want to attend. Drew Peterson, Phil’s son, now manages and promotes the Poker run and believes another way that we can grow this event is to make it a Key’s Bike Week with a Key West Poker Run. So this year the plan is to have motorcycle rides, events and attractions throughout the Upper and Middle Keys to attract riders to come and stay for the Week and Island hop. There are thousands of hotel rooms and places to stay throughout the upper and middle keys.
The road has always been a place to find the answers, or ignore the questions.
The Idea is to ride down and ride all over the Keys for the first three or four days and enjoy many of the things you can do like, snorkeling or dive trips, fishing and fishing trips, kayaking. jet skiing, para-sailing and of course enjoying Paradise while eating, drinking and shopping. Then there is the Poker Run which will start on Thursday September 18th this year and ends on Saturday the 20th at 5pm at the last stop The Conch Republic Seafood Company in Key West So far the Island Fish Co on Marathon and Boondocks on Ramrod Key are planning on having special events and parties all week long with each of them having one big party day In that week. You will find all of the

hotel accommodations listed by mile marker and rates with phone numbers and e-mail addresses for all of the Keys by visiting PetersonsHarley. com and clicking on the Poker Run link. Look for last year’s program and events. A Key West Story by Scott F. Odell The hair gets a little bit more gray, the pounds don’t come off like they use to, but the water is still warm, the beer is still cold, and the people are just plain crazy in Key West. That is a good thing, and that is why I keep coming back every September to join in the fun with Peterson’s Poker Run. This year was no different, maybe the traffic was a little worse, but who cares... I am headed to Key West! What makes this event so much fun for my wife and I is it is such a peaceful ride through the Everglades on old 41... maybe I’ll stop some year and take one of those airboat rides. There are also so many places to stop and have a great Florida seafood lunch, along with getting your poker hand. I just can’t think of a better destination to ride your motorcycle, there is so much to do once you get there. The first thing is catching up with old friends at Sloppy Joe’s bar
on Duval Street. I can always count on Tom and Holly Keller being set up out-front of the bar with some of their latest Thug Customs. This year was no different, how about a Trike with a 30 inch front wheel? They even busted out a BMW cafe racer that actually won best of show ... you just never know. After Hours Customs had a couple of bikes that drew a huge crowd right next to them, and I am talking CRAZY ASS bikes! After a stroll down Duval Street, it was time to head over to Mallory Square and watch the local street performers do some really weird stuff. Then it’s sipping down a Mojito and watch the sunset in Key West. The party is just getting started in town, we’re a little tired after 8 hours of riding but still have the energy to check out some more action. What’s to do in the morning? How about renting a Jet Ski and take a ride around the island? What other bike event can you do that at? Twenty-eight miles of pure fun on the water is a great way to start the day and get me pumped for the rest of the day. Key West is filled
“Oh Key West, I am really beginning to get attached to you. You are one of a kind.”
to the gills by mid afternoon on Saturday and the entire length of Duval Street is packed with every make and model of motorcycles imaginable. We are in motorcycle heaven as my wife would say—no, that’s what I would say. We bumped into Ron from Born To Ride and caught up on our long friendship that started around the first issue of the magazine way back when. It’s been 100 issues, where does time go? I hope I am around for 100 more and still remember how to use a camera and write a few honest words. This year we finished out the day on a sunset sail aboard the Western Union Schooner built in the 1930s as a working vessel repairing cables. Let me tell you, it doesn’t get any better than this to wind down after a full weekend of fun. A beautiful sunset, my beautiful wife, a glass of wine to share... Oh Key West, I am really beginning to get attached to you. You are one of a kind. Only 361 days before we get to do it again!

Family, Fun, Love, Adventure and even Marriage at the Key West Poker Run
The legendary Phil Peterson’s Key West Poker Run is always much more than a poker run; it’s an experience that’s hard to explain. The last time Deb and I went to the poker run together was 13 years ago—before kids. I’ve gone a few times since then, but this year we went as a family with Emily and Ronnie to experience the beauty of the Keys and what the Peterson family has created, an event that every motorcyclist should experience. When reporter Scott Odell told me about his wife Carla’s brother Terry and his fiancé Michelle riding to the Keys from Colorado for their wedding, I knew we had a great story because it’s a story within a story. Their story has ties of love, riding, passion, and family. And that is what Born To Ride is about!
Motorcycles are ridden all over the world as a major form of transportation. For me, they have been a major part of my life and what I have done with it. I have traveled all over the world with my wife Carla ... on motorcycles. Without motorcycles, I would have never experienced the grandeur of the Alps or had that glass of wine in Florence, Italy on the Piazza with my lovely wife. Alaska wouldn’t be the same without that Sportster with her on the back or getting lost in Germany. We got married on a Fat Boy in Las Vegas. Motorcycling is what memories are made of. Peterson’s Poker Run down to Key West has always been one of our favorite rides, and we look forward to it every year. We have been bugging Terry Kermoade, Carla’s brother, for years to ride down to Florida and do the run with us. He finally accepted the offer this Ron Galletti year and we figured we’d rent a bike for him; he

lives in Gypsum, Colorado, right outside of Vail. That would be a very long ride just to do a poker run; boy, were we wrong about him. “I am going to ride my Harley from Colorado all the way to the Keys,” he told me. “Michelle (fiancée) is riding on the back and we have decided to get married in Key West during the rally.” My initial reaction was, WOW! It’s taken a wedding to get your butt to the Keys? Then all kinds of thoughts went through my head. They have never done a long trip like this before ... would they make it? Terry had been riding Harley-Davidsons for a very long time and has ridden to Sturgis every year as long as have known him. I knew nothing of Michelle’s riding experience other than she had owned a Buell, but riding as a passenger for 2,300 miles ... I had my doubts. But I have learned never

They got to experience the lovely afternoon storms coming through Florida and our wonderful Love Bugs. When they got to our house in Parrish, Florida, they were full of smiles and acted like it was a day at the park. We were happy to see them and give them a day of rest before heading out to Key West. “I can’t believe how hot and humid it is in Florida!” Michelle exclaimed as she headed to the shower. Terry and I spent some time scrubbing those damn bugs off the bike! Never once did we hear them complain about the long ride to Florida... hmmm? I think these two people might be made for each other. After a day of rest, some pool time and a few beers, we headed out to Key West, taking what I would call a relaxing, scenic ride. Starting out in Parrish, we headed over to Arcadia and hen South to Ft. Myers using all the back roads. We then got on the Tamiami Trail
BTR 26 | BORNTORIDE.COM
and stopped to have lunch in Naples. The rest of the afternoon was going through the wonderful Everglades at a leisurely pace, just gliding down the road thinking of the wonderful weekend that was coming up in Key West. We stopped at the South Peterson’s dealership and signed up for the poker run, then headed to Key Largo for the evening. The next day we hit all five poker stops and made our way into Key West. Hey, we had a wedding to still make some final arraignments for! So far everything was just perfect, the weather, the event, and the ride down. Most importantly, we were getting to be a part of some very special people’s wedding and have a lifetime memory of this wonderful time in our lives. We did a few touristy things that morning before heading down to Smathers Beach, like take their picture at the most southern point in the USA, visit the
lighthouse and go by Hemmingway’s house. We picked up the couple in our electric golf car and drove to the spot of the ceremony. The beach was beautiful, the bride was gorgeous, and the whole event was breathtaking you may now kiss the bride! The rest of the evening was spent on Duval Street celebrating the wedding with thousands of strangers. What would a day be at Peterson’s poker Run without posing the wedding couple on some custom bikes? My good friends, Tom and Holly Keller, owners of Thug Custom Cycles, were more than happy to have them become part of the Thug Nation! As the evening wound down we made our way to Cowboy Bill’s for the award presentations. Terry and Michelle won the longest traveled award with a whopping 2,703 miles on their bike. Did I mention they got married? Two wheels + two hearts=too much fun!

Note: This is Finz Finds Alternative Route to get to Key West Living in Key Largo for six years, I have learned all the great local places to eat, and all the little back roads off US-1. You can head straight down US-1 the whole way, and get to your destination just fine, but you will miss some of the side adventures the Keys have to offer. To start with, I highly recommend riding Card Sound Rd (and bridge) instead of taking what locals call the stretch (US-1). If you take the stretch, you will have cars constantly trying to pass you, and you will not get that laid back feeling heading down the road. When you take Card Sound, it is the road less traveled. You might even see some Florida crocodiles along the way. Yes crocodiles, not alligators. There are also a couple of local eateries at the foot of Card Sound bridge. Ala-
bama Jacks is one of them, and has been there forever. Key Largo is my favorite key, but I am partial to it because I lived there. It is the home of the Caribbean Club, a great biker hangout, and was featured in the movie Key Largo with Humphrey Bogart. The list of great Restaurants is too long to mention, but I recommend getting a bite at one of them like The Fish House (mm102), The Pilot House (mm 99.5), Mrs Macs Kitchen (mm 99.5) or Snappers (mm 94.5). If you want to swim with Dolphins, you can book a session at Dolphins Cove, Dolphins Plus, Theater Of The Sea, or Grassy Key Dolphin Research Center. When you get to Big Pine Key, take one of the side roads in my route, find a place to stop and turn off you engines. If you are lucky, you
Don’t miss the 42nd Key West Poker Run - 3rd week in September 2014
might have Key Deer come up to you looking for a hand out. These deer are about the size of a small dog, and are used to people in this area. You wont find a ride that is as open air as the one down the Keys. The ocean on one side, and the bay on the other, along with all the long scenic bridges you will cross, makes riding the Keys one of my favorite. By the way, locals refer to points of interest either being located ocean side, or bayside, and everything is referenced by mile markers (mm), not addresses. Time is a little slower, and your life will be a little less stressful on this journey, so take it all in and enjoy the ride. Steve Finz

Love Jugs, manufactured by Hammerhead Engineering, the World’s Best Harley-Davidson V-Twin Engine Cooling System was designed to take care of a problem that has affected numerous Harley-Davidson owners worldwide—EXTREME engine heat. The first Love Jugs prototype was developed when one of the company founders, Steve West had an extreme heat problem when he rode his new Harley Ultra Touring bike, especially at low speeds. Fifteen prototypes later, and extensive collaboration with a group of scientific developers, Love Jugs was ready to come to market. The driving principles behind the product are straightforward—a hot air cooled engine temperature will go down as air flows over the air cooling fins of the engine, particularly if the air is directed at the hottest part of the engine. That is the simple premise, but only Love Jugs delivers the results riders need to bring down and hold down engine temperatures. A cooler running engine means lower ambient temperature experienced by the motorcycle rider and passenger. If it is more comfortable, riders will stay on their bikes longer and ride more often. Love Jugs keeps you on the road in conditions that would have BTR 32 | BORNTORIDE.COM
otherwise kept your bike in the garage. The high velocity constant air flow provided by Love Jugs relieves stress on your bikes’ engine and drive train by reducing the temperature of your bikes oil. Cooler oil means two important things—higher oil viscosity to better lubricate critical internal engine components and higher oil pressure to make sure the lube gets where it is needed when it is needed. Love Jugs combine high performance with great looks at a great price. The aircraft quality stainless steel housings are polished to a high chrome finish are the toughest on the market. It will stand up to the harshest conditions—one product test includes operating the fans while fully submerged in a tank of water. The suggested retail price is $349 when you order direct from the company website. All Love Jugs cooling systems are shipped for FREE in the US via Priority Mail, so new owners usually receive their orders in just two days. Ready for your COOL ride? Wait until you see the newest edition to the Love Jugs Family—the Love Jugs Heat Master!

Summertime Showdown
It was a twist of fate that brought the nation’s largest motorcycle rally next door to the historic graveyard. The landmark biker bar, the Boot Hill Saloon, reminds it’s patrons of the cemetery with it’s famous slogan, “Better off here than across the street.” Ironically, the leather and chrome crowd may be Pinewood’s saving grace. Fund-raisers during Bike Week and the Biketoberfest have raised thousands towards some $90,000 in renovations to the cemetery, which had long been abandoned. Legend has it that his daughter, Alena Beatrice
BTR 46 | BORNTORIDE.COM
Smith, walked up the hill to watch the fishermen sailing by. In 1877, she died at age 24 and was buried under her favorite tree. In time, the land became a cemetery. Pinewood Cemetery became the graveyard of choice for many pioneer families. Among the VIP burials are the first local congressman, Charles Dougherty, and philanthropist Charles Burgoyne, the first mayor of Seabreeze, an early town that merged into Daytona Beach. What brought the bikers to Main Street was the rise of the Boot Hill Saloon. The watering hole
in the building across from the cemetery dates back to the late 1800’s. During the 1930’s, motorcycle racing on the beach became popular, which led to drag racing on Main Street, and the old watering hole changed hands. Under the new ownership, the bar attracted biker crowds and took it’s new name form the Old West, where cemeteries were often called “Boot Hills” because the old boots would sit atop the cowboys graves. Thus, the Boot Hill Saloon was born. The current effort to save the cemetery started in the late 1990’s.

Women’s World
“DISCOVERING YOUR POWER” BY HAYLEY B. COLINA
elax, you are not alone. It is perfectly okay to feel overwhelmed, fed up and/or discouraged. We all go through that when we want to make changes in our lives. As women, most of us are natural multi overwhelming dissatisfaction with your life and this can put you in an emotional road to nowhere fast. However, many women are taking control of their lives and discovering the power they have had all along. Women are allowing their power to break free and start living their life passionately. Motorcycles are changing women’s life!
R
Women are discovering that motorcycles give them an unbelievable sense of confidence and control over their lives. When riding your own motorcycle it is all you in control and the world around you to experience. When you ride you get a sense of peace, a sense of power to do and be anyone you want. The experience is something so intense and so invigorating that there are no words that can truly describe it—you have to do it to understand. Getting on your bike, feeling and hearing that engine start and giving it gas is heart-throbbing and makes you feel on top of the world. More and more women are reaching a point in their lives when they say, “Enough it is my time to live my life.” Many women are finding out they are more important and more capable than they ever thought. Women are turning to what many have been taught is a taboo and getting on a motorcycle of their own. They are experiencing a new world full of adventure and excitement—almost a total rebirth. Once you step into the world of motorcycles you realize there are so many erroneous perceptions of bikers, unfortunately caused by few rotten apples. Bikers are like family! We look out for each other and embrace each other. Bikers do a lot of charity work and support each other through good and bad. When you are a biker you are equal, and there is no classifying who is wealthy, smart, or poor; we treat each other equally. You grow to care and form huge connections meeting incredible people with incredible stories. Many women are taking the step to discover their power and join the women’s world of motorcycle. The more women who try riding the more women will realize this power they hold and this passion they have within. Ladies it is time to start living your life your way. Join other women who are ready to become masters of change. Women who are ready to experience life fully, passionately and intensely. The Long Hot Summer and Hurricane Prep The long hot summer will soon be coming to an end. In the trailer park, the conditions are always the same—steamy, ugly and enduring that never ending spectacular race to keep the rain from coming in from those invisible cracks and crevices. Out on the road however, it is a very different landscape. As you ride down the highway, you feel the superheated air as it permeates your very soul from the skin out and back again. Certainly it is an acceptable situation and better than riding around in some un-air conditioned cage, but this time of year you can pretty much count on not being all that hot too long! Assuredly, those very same rains that keep you running for plastic and duct tape at home will absolutely guarantee that you will not have to take a shower or wash your clothes today (unless you are a slave to fashion). … Plus there is the added benefit of the complimentary bike wash that sometimes leaves your machine covered with slime and mud and other times just causes corrosion that has a seemingly indefinite afterlife despite your efforts to polish it all away. All that aside, it is a beautiful thing to live in Florida, and I know we all look forward to October and November when the rain moderates and the temperatures are slightly dialed down from broil to warmish. But, the rest of the story is yet un-told.…I remember a few years back when I wrote a detailed list of things that you would need to prepare for the ongoing hurricane season. Although I could have plagiarized my own work from years ago, I decided not to, as the editors of this publication continuously scrutinize my submissions. That being said, I will just remind all my dedicated readers that here, unlike any other place on the globe, (we) are always subject to the possibility of a vagrant hurricane coming to visit the region. Sometimes they just bring some wind and another large dose of rain, and other times they do irreparable damage to people and things. Either way, (& not going back to the past articles) it really is a good idea to get your ‘hurricane party kit’ Book the Craven Moorehead Blues Band, Call 888-795-5779
together before its too late. Depending on your financial and social status, you should always stock up on the essentials before the storm—instead of the last minute, when you will be assaulted by all the others who simply waited too long. So, if you can afford it, go ahead and stock up on all the beer and whiskey that you can load up in your cage, being sure that you can store it in a location that won’t be accessible to the nosy neighbors or others who may want to prematurely help themselves. Yeah, the experts say you should stock up on batteries, bottled-water, a first aid kit and maybe a generator, but those things probably won’t make your ‘hurricane party’ a huge success! Remember, beer, wine, and liquor have an indefinite shelf life, so in the case that there is no need to hunker down and ride out the storm, the products will still be in fine shape to help you survive the next most dreaded and unavoidable events: Thanksgiving and Christmas! If your social status indicates that you are single and ready to mingle, my recommendation has always been to pre-select the correct party mates. If you are a guy, then carefully choose that particular breed of female who is not too needy. I previously suggested that you peruse the local wing-joints to find suitable invitees and at all costs avoid the local gentlemen’s club employees in order to insure your personal safety, but the overall climate has changed somewhat and besides, I’m no expert! If you are a girl and are planning to invite a variety of dudes to your hurricane party, I really have no advice. That being based on the fact that I have never been invited to any function that involved one female and a hoard of dudes—except that one time—back in high school. … Since this is sort of a family oriented publication I will decline to elaborate on that particular event at this time! We have had a pretty good summer overall. We all know that better times and weather are on the way. I rarely miss out on the free bike wash, laundry, and shower whenever I’m out. There is still a little bit of availability left for that ‘free stuff,’ so I need not discuss that particular subject any further. As I have stated before “I am the fresh prince of poverty.” So in my never-ending quest to make a dollar, I found myself playing in another band. This provides me with another source of income albeit meager, but it is satisfying to the heart to be able to play music again and to have so many of you compliment the band and the very talented musicians who make up the unit. We very recently performed at the Born To Ride 19th Anniversary Trilogy at Biff Burger in St. Pete. It was a great honor to open the massive party that celebrates the hard work that Ron and Deb have put into this Born To Ride brand. Although the pesky weather put a temporary damper on the festivities, the crowd un-daunted attended the event in droves and enjoyed the live entertainment. My long lost pal Spyke drug along his/her human counterpart Mike, who finally sobered up & left the trailer park long enough to emcee the day and night long event. I feel that a good time was had by all, and we are looking forward to many more events with our BTR family and friends. We especially want to say thanks to all our new-found fans who enjoy our music. The “Radio Bar Band” consists of: Dr. Gary Brown (guitar and vocals), Wild Bill Bryant (drums, vocals and the “Mario Andretti” of the mini-van) and Craven Moorehead, (bass guitar and vocals). These are seasoned musicians who have dedicated their entire life to the glory and beauty that is music. It is my pleasure to have the opportunity to perform with these individuals. Keep your ear out, as we are coming to a venue/party near you!! Shameless plug mode OFF! Till next month—SPEED SAFELY!! BORNTORIDE.COM | BTR 69

Spyke & Mike
We’re back on the road again, riding around those pesky summer storms, my BTR friends. Keeping close to the beach where the sea breeze is cool and the rain passes quickly has been our typical M.O. for August. Many thanks to Steve and the gang at Ironhorse Cycles for getting the Fat Bird back into flying condition. If you need something done right the first time, go check them out at their new location: 12315 62nd Ave, N. unit C, Largo, 33773. It’s in the Pinellas Industrial Park across from the saw mill. Tell ‘em bird brain (Mike) sent ya, it will make them laugh. On August 23, Mike and I kicked off the first round of the BTR trilogy parties at BiffBurgers. This is the place where bike nights were born in Pinellas County almost 20 years ago with three bikes on a Wednesday night. The BTR gang gave Troy, one of the owners and the usual M/C for their bike events here, the day off. I hung in the shade most of the time behind the drive thru sign. A few people thought I was the poster child for Buffy’s menu. Even the pig in the background was eyeing

me up. Vendor Mike, who owns the Motorcycle Eyewear booth snapped this picture and set everyone straight. I’m NOT the new menu item! Thanks bro! Other than that, life was good. All my friends kept coming by and feeding me my favorites: yummy Biff burgers, tater tots, and chicken wings. Craven Moorehead managed to acquire a day pass out of Hillsborough County and his Radio Bar Band played some kick-ass blues early. Sons of Nuns rocked the crowd all afternoon under the big tent. The Hamiltones wrapped up the party on the inside stage. In between, Mike kept the crowd rolling with his crazy biker games, especially the tricycle racing and jousting. There were a whole bunch of people there we haven’t seen in a while and a few we met for the first time. When that happens Mike has to answer various crazy questions about me. The only problem here is that it makes him consume a lot of wine, his new drink of choice. And when that happens it’s hard for Mike to get the right answer out because it just makes him forget the question. Then all he does is ramble
on. He stands up on a chair and states, “Let me tell y’all the benefits of drinking wine. I keep busy early drinking coffee, until opening a bottle of wine is acceptable. I then drink more wine ‘cause I don’t like to keep a lot of things bottled up.” He takes a drink, looks at his glass, and says, “It doesn’t matter if the glass is half empty or half full, there is clearly room for more wine!” At Biff-Burgers they only sell wine in the single serving bottle. He picks up an unopened one off the bar and starts telling the crowd the secrets to enjoying a good bottle of wine. First he twists off the cap and says, “You must allow it to breathe.” He waives it at the crowd and looks at the bottle. He then tilts his head to the side and says, “If it looks like this one and it’s not breathing, give it mouth to mouth.” He then starts performing resuscitation, finishing off the mini bottle. After that he puts it down, turns to the crowd and states, “Just don’t forget to buy your mom and dad wine for the holidays. It reminds them that you’re the reason why they drink! Also for you ladies, wine is cheaper than Botox and it paralyzes more muscles.” After those comments, he was dragged down off the chair by a female bartender. But not before screaming, “You barmaids are all wine connoisseurs. If it’s not one thing you’re whining about, it’s something else!” Out of the corner of his eye he catches two other bartenders dropping their aprons and start towards him. Mike picks me up and yells, “Spyke! Let’s make like a green light and go!” We meander through a sea of bikes weaving in and out with the angry Biff’s posse close on our heels. He jumps in the truck, sets me on the window sill and slams it into gear. Spitting gravel from the rear tires and tossing around the tricycles in the back almost losing them, he gets my wings in the wind and the trucks wheels down the road. STURGIS!
One word, yet so many thoughts, experiences, and stories come to mind when thinking about this massive rally in South Dakota. Perhaps you are headed there or are on your way back; either way, it is an experience to visit the Black Hills, the Badlands, or the numerous small towns nestled in the area. Recently I had the opportunity to visit the area, and the scenery was truly magnificent. Seeing the Badlands carved out of the plains, the incredible Mt. Rushmore, and the massive Crazy

Horse carving, literally took my breath away! About the only thing better than the beauty of the area was that the roads seemed designed for great riding. The most impressive area was the Peter Norbeck Scenic Byway, which is southwest of Rapid City. There are five single lane tunnels and several single lane bridges, where everyone has to share the road. When coming through one tunnel, the end of the tunnel actually framed the Mt. Rushmore Memorial, which was off in the distance. While the view was incredible, I had to keep my mind focused on the numerous switchbacks that were part of a steep rise or fall in elevation, and there were “whirly jigs” which were corkscrew spiral roads that actually climbed while making a 270 degree turn. Not a place to let your mind wander! It amazed me that several large RVs were going through the area, and there are advisories to warn the drivers of hairpin turns and switchbacks. In its day, this highway was considered to be an impossible engineering feat, but Norbeck brought in the right engineers, and the impossible became the possible. Today, almost 100 years later, we can ride a truly breathtaking road designed to show the natural beauty of the
Black Hills. If you get to the area, plan a day to explore this road, you may even get to see some wild bison’s in the process! You know, there was another that did the impossible, again and again, throughout His life. From raising Lazarus from the dead, restoring people to health from their infirmities, to feeding 5,000 men from five loaves and two small fish, Jesus showed that nothing is impossible. In Mark 9:14-29, Jesus deals with the faith of a father whose son is possessed by a mute spirit. “Jesus said to him, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.”” And because of the belief of the father, Jesus healed the boy and called out the evil spirit. Do you have that kind of power, and faith, in your life? If you have trusted Jesus as your Savior and Lord, His power, and His faith, can be yours. To be clear, we must have faith to achieve the impossible, but we also have to have Jesus in our hearts, and be seeking His will for our lives. Then, and only then, will His blessing pour out upon us. With faith, nothing is impossible! In the Wind, Denny Dingler
