Stopping

Your motorcycle is equipped with both front and rear brakes. to achieve optimum braking performance, both the front and rear brakes must be used in unison. However, because of the way that a motorcycle’s weight distribution changes (shifts forward) under deceleration, the front brake provide a majority of the motorcycle’s stopping power— up to 70 percent or more! consequently, it is essential to familiarize yourself with the operation of your motorcycle’s front brake (in conjunction with the rear) every single

time you stop. to bring a motorcycle to a complete stop, you’ll need to use both hands and both feet together. Squeeze the front brake lever and press down on the rear brake pedal at the same time, varying the amount of force depending on how quickly you need to stop. At the same time you apply the brakes, squeeze in the clutch lever and downshift toward first gear. if you wish to use engine braking to further slow down, gently ease out the clutch between downshifts.

Attorney Fran M. Haasch says ride Safe ride Smart! 1-866-LAW-FrAN

Attorney Fran M. Haasch isn’t just our attorney, she’s yours as well! 1-866-LAW-FRAN

even though the full braking force of each wheel may not be required for normal, planned stops, it is important to get into the habit of using both brakes at all times so you will respond reflexively should a panic situation arise. remember to pay attention to what your hands are doing in a braking situation: roll off the throttle when slowing, to prevent over-revving the engine; to prevent lugging or stalling when slowing, remember to squeeze the clutch lever. BTR 12 | BORNTORIDE.COM

time again. So, stay tuned. We’re headed for the mountains as we join the winners of Born To Ride’s and the Copperhead Lodge’s Weekend Getaway Contest.

Hey, this is Debbie with Born To Ride TV and we are here at the Copperhead Lodge in Blairsville, Georgia. This is Michelle Evans, the owner of Copperhead Lodge. I’m going to coin you on this trip—The Biker Den Mother! You’re looking out and taking care of everybody. So Michelle, just give us the geographic location of Copperhead Lodge. Where are you located? Michelle: We are about an hour and a half north of Atlanta, Georgia, tucked in the very northeast corner. In 25 miles you can be either in Tennessee or North Carolina.

Debbie: Tell us about the acreage, the property here at Copperhead Lodge. Michelle: We’ve got 47 acres total. The Lodge is located in the center of the resort. We have 20 acres on the front side of the resort and 27 acres in the back where the creek is. It’s a bit more private and woodsy set up. We have 28 cabins on the property right now. When we’re

done, we’ll have 52.

Debbie: So you’ve got the cabin atmosphere, the lodge atmosphere, the swimming pool, the amphitheater; you’ve got everything! What we’ve really been impressed with is the catering you do for the biker.

Michelle: Absolutely! This place was built with all of that in mind. That was the vision. We’re the second owners. We have a vision where motorcycling enthusiasts can come but also people who are not on bikes. We have a great mix of folks here. We do cater to the bikers. You will see that when you walk in; a big rock fireplace with a motorcycle set inside of it. That really sets the true vision. There are a ton of amenities that the bikers love. For example, last night we had a great band, we have guided rides all week long that our local folks do for us. It’s just motorcycle euphoria here! Debbie: You contacted Born To Ride about five months ago and said, ‘Hey! Let’s have a big Born To Ride Weekend! I’m willing to do a give-away to some of your readers and viewers.’ So, we did that and I’m telling you, they love it!

Serving over 6000 overnight visitors from around the world last year. Are you planning for this Year?

BORNTORIDE.COM | BTR 13

Michelle: Everyone who I talked to that came up on the weekend thoroughly enjoyed it. Some of them had never heard of this area. Many of them rode the guided rides with me on Friday. They couldn’t believe the natural beauty and the sites that we saw. I really think that this is a great thing. Not only for the Copperhead Lodge but for Born To Ride and our relationship that has flourished over the last year, and hopefully for all those folks who are a part of the Copperhead family. Debbie: I want to talk about the cabins in just a moment, but you started to get right into the guided rides. This is the girl who leads the guided rides. You ride in and you meet Michelle. She gets you into your cabin, the next day she gets up and on her bike—taking you on these guided rides.

Michelle: I enjoy the riding part of what we do! We also do a lot of custom maps for folks. When they come up here, we want them to see what this area has to offer. Quite frankly, we’ve had people from all over the country and from other countries that come here. And when I say there isn’t a bad road here, I’m not kidding! It gives me a lot of pride to take folks out and show them around. I’m always going to take them to the prettiest scenic overlook, the best place for lunch, the best place to take

BTR 14 | BORNTORIDE.COM

a picture, make sure they get their picture under the waterfalls … all the things we miss when we punch in the GPS and stay on the roads that are less traveled.

Debbie: I have to comment on the roads. Not one pot hole—not one! The roads are perfect, smooth roads where the signs are very well marked, too.

Michelle: I do think this area recognizes the importance that the motor-tourist is to the value of our economy. And so for that reason I think they really do invest in that. For example, Wolf Pen Gap is better than The Dragon as far as technically for a road … is under construction and being repaved right now. That’s going to be a great, new improvement to the Gauntlet. That’s the ride we promote. So, they are looking out for us with the safety of the roads for our motor-tourists. That’s very important for us. We see that as a great thing for us and our future to continue to build.

Debbie: Stuart! Where are you taking us today? (Stuart Fincher, Born To Ride magazine Georgia Publisher and Tour Guide.) Stuart: The ride today is based on The Gauntlet at Copperhead Lodge. We are now on the Richard Russell scenic highway, one of the most beautiful views in Georgia. This

is where we grew up and we love it! You can be up here for four days and never ride the same road. It’s phenomenal. If you like the mountains, love beautiful scenery, a lot of it is National Forest so you won’t see a lot of stores and houses. It’s just wide open, man! The Dragon’s Tail has nothing on what northeast Georgia has. We’re proud of where we live. We tried to keep it a secret all these years, but it’s time to let it out! Debbie: Copperhead Lodge really loves bikers! Michelle has another ride going out today. Michelle actually took a group out today. We passed her on our way in this morning. We’ll be heading back in to the lodge where we’ll be meeting up with them. What’s going on this weekend? Stuart: They have live music, they did a promotional give-away in Florida and all of the winners are up here this weekend where we’re trying to expose them to the beautiful mountains Georgia has to offer. Debbie: So, where are we heading next?

Stuart: We’re headed to the Copperhead Lodge. We’ve got a few curves to get through before we get there, but that’s where we’re headed!

Debbie: I’m promising you that once you come

One and Two Bedroom Floor plans are available, call 706-835-7433 www.CopperHeadLodge.com

to Copperhead Lodge to visit, you’re going to ask Michelle, ‘How do I buy one of these cabins and make this part of my mountain home?’ Michelle, your website has a lot of information!

Michelle: It does! You can go to our website: copperheadlodge.com. On there, you can see all of our information about rental. The cabins are there via virtual tour so you can look at the cabin you’ll be staying in. If you’re interested in purchasing a cabin, you can also visit our website that is dedicated to all the things for sale. That email is: cabins@copperhead.com. Easiest thing to do is pick up the phone and give me a call: 706-835-7433. I can send you information by email, or I can send you information by snail mail. Tons of information about the rental performance over the last few

years, floor plans, colors, etc. Ron picked right up on the colors when he walked in the door this morning. He picked Aztec as his color. We will do whatever you want. It’s a personal thing. In fact, Anthony is out right now with a new owner from North Carolina. They are working on the final touches of their cabin, working on those final colors. It’s really a fun process! Once you become part of the cabin ownership family, we call it ‘Living the Lifestyle.’ You go back home and we take care of everything. At the end of the day, you are a part of our community and part of the lifestyle here at Copperhead Lodge.

Debbie: It’s a great investment if you’re thinking down the road ‘I might be interested in retiring part of the time in Florida, part of the time in Georgia, why not invest in something like this

now where there’s return on your money while investing in your retirement.

Michelle: Absolutely! They are a great investment on the rental perspective. And in addition, times have not been great the past few years. In fact, probably one of the worst economies. However, we continued to gain appreciation. We’ve gained between 20-25% in our cabins. Frankly, that’s because we’ve got the lodge here, it is a resort. It’s not just a cabin in the woods as you alluded to earlier. It’s really like a community. We are continuing on seeing improvement. We’ve sold six cabins in the last three months. There are a lot of new people joining the family. We’re going forward, we’re going upward. Now is the time to buy. They are priced right. There are only a few slots left. Once they are gone, that will be it.

You can Win with Born To Ride on the next Ultimate Mountain Destination Giveaway!

COPPERHEAD LODGE FROM A WINNERS VIEWPOINT Barry and Nancy Crapps were winners of the Copperhead Lodge giveaway! “I was really excited when I heard we won the trip! I’ve wanted to come up here for a while. I’ve seen it on Facebook and in advertisements. It’s great and it’s beautiful up here. If you want great curvy, mountainous roads, then this is going to be the place you want to come to. If you go up the skyway, you’ll go up a good 300 feet. The views are all the way in and all the way out. The Lodge has been excellent. Michelle is a great tour guide. She led us on a tour yesterday. She’s a really good rider; she knows where she’s going. She’s a great guide. They are very nice people, very accommodating. If you want to ride or bring your trailer, it doesn’t matter. They have enough room. Just come on up. The cabins are beautiful,

clean, and nice. Kinda feels like you’re at your house. We are already planning our next trip here—hopefully in the fall!”

Bruce and Cheryl Krause were other lucky winners! “I was the lucky winner in the contest that they had for a free weekend. I won and here we are. It’s motorcycle-themed. The bed was so comfortable. Michelle did a swell job here. I wish them the best of luck.” What about the rides that you took? “We did the waterfall rides. There were some good switchback curves. I can’t zoom around them as quick as I want to. The country up here is beautiful and gorgeous. The ride to and from the dam was beautiful. The people here are so friendly. The room was immaculate! Everything we needed was in there. No complaints!” So, what would you say to someone that’s never been to Copperhead Lodge before? “It’s absolutely

worth the trip! Even the ride getting here was beautiful. I highly recommend it.”

Bill Graumann was another winner! “I was pretty excited. I went on the BTR Copperhead website and signed up for the free stay. I was anxious to see if my name would be drawn. I got an email from Michelle at the Copperhead saying I had been picked. We made it and it’s been great! The hospitality, food, and accommodations are great at the Copperhead. I’m like most bikers; it’s not the destination, it’s the journey. This is one place that has changed my mind; this is a great destination and I recommend it for everybody!” What about the riding? There are some really great roads to ride. “Oh, it’s been awesome. The scenery has been great. Every place you stop: the hospitality of all the people, the general stores, the large stores, the restaurants—everyone is just

BORNTORIDE.COM | BTR 17

great up here! The riding is awesome! You can get out on some open roads and enjoy some fast scenery. You can get on The Gauntlet and ride some elevation. It’s just breathtaking for me. Come here! You’ll be very, very pleased!”

Lake Burton Fish Hatchery

Another winner, Fred Scadron, shared his story with us on winning the Copperhead Getaway Weekend. “I saw there was a sweepstakes. And I said, ‘I never win anything.’ What do I have to lose? I was already on the Internet. I got a call two weeks later. I told my wife and she was ecstatic! I’ve never been in the mountains and I have never ridden in the mountains! I can’t tell you about the breathtaking experience and the adrenalin rush we both had. This made us an awesome experience that we’ll never forget. We definitely want to come back here. I really appreciate Born To Ride in putting this together for us.” Copperhead Lodge 171 Copperhead Parkway Blairsville, GA 30512

BTR 18 | BORNTORIDE.COM

Debbie: “I took a little stop after taking all the twisties and the curves! WOW! This is the Lake Burton Fish Hatchery. Say hello to John Lee Thompson, state trout stocking coordinator! This place is something to see on your sightseeing here in Georgia.”

John: “We’re at Lake Burton Fish Hatchery and grow trout here to be stocked in over 100 different places here in Georgia. This is one of four fish hatcheries in Georgia and does about 350,000 catchables a year. “Right now we’ve got mostly little fish in the hatchery. These fish will stay here and be stocked out next year. The big fish in the hatchery will go out between now and Labor Day. Georgia DNR with cooperation with the US Fish and Wildlife Service stock over one million trout in Georgia each year.”

Ron: “How important is that to the economy or fishing? What does it impact?” John: “Well, it’s highly economically driven. We want people to come to Georgia to go

trout fishing. You have to buy a special, not only in addition to a state license, but a special trout stamp to fish in trout waters in Georgia. We want people to come in and come up here and stay in our parks—like Moccasin Creek Park—right next door, buy gas, ice and tackle.

“In order to get people to come to Georgia from Florida, we have to have a nice fishing product here in Georgia. We have native and wild trout populations here in Georgia. They just don’t grow really fast. We want to sustain the amount of fishing pressure and have quality fishing here in Georgia, so we kinda need to be putting these fish out.” Ron: “Are the trout in all the lakes here in Georgia? Where do they go?”

John: “Primarily the trout are stocked in streams and rivers. Lake Burton is one of the few reservoirs here that is stocked with trout. It has about 28,000 brown trout a year. We’re actually putting those fish in to control nonnative bait fish called blue-back heron. The blue-back heron eats all the sport fish eggs

and fry in the lake. So we introduced another predator to eat it and create a little bit of sport fishery at the same time.”

“We have a Clarksville address. Clarksville is actually located 20 miles to the south of us on highway 197. Highway 197 was originally an old highway road and was built in the 1930s by the civilian conservation corps.

Debbie: “This is awesome! We just got news this week that there is a shortage of cows and the price of beef is going up. So make your way over to Georgia! They’ve got trout here! Forget the beef prices!

Stuart Fincher: “It’s been a really great weekend and we’ve enjoyed it! Michelle and Anthony are phenomenal people, the mountains are phenomenal, and we’ve got John Wayne and Dawn Smith from Angel City. I’m glad to have them here. They rode with us yesterday. You couldn’t ask for better weather! It’s been cool. Like I said, it’s just gorgeous, man! The only time I like better is the fall where we have the leaves changing. I hope to get some video from

that. We’re going to do a lot of rides------ this fall from that. We’ve had a great time and I’m looking forward to doing it again!”

John Wayne Smith, Angel City: “The only thing I want to tell people when they come to the mountains and you’ve never been before, is just be sure not to be looking off to the sides when you come into a curve. You want to make plans on how you’re going to come around it. Some of these curves you’ll meet yourself on them. There are so many things! It’s so beautiful! Come on up to Copperhead Lodge and experience it first hand for yourselves. It’s a great place that you won’t beat anywhere!”

Ron Galletti: “I want say that we had an amazing mountain getaway here at Copperhead Lodge. I really want to thank the staff at HarleyDavidson Tampa, New Port Richey, Brandon, Tallahassee, and Panama City. Gary Bang, thank you for everything you did for us! You gave us these beautiful motorcycles! We tried to rent them but you hooked us up, man! And I’ll tell you what! The Limited 2014 handles the mountains great! Thank you Gary, from us at

Born To Ride! Thank you for all you do! We really appreciate it! You’ve got to come to the Copperhead Lodge!

Debbie: “We’re talking about the roads, the good quality of the roads, and the scenery. You’re not just a lodge owner that hands over a map and says, ‘Here, explore our area.’ You’re like, ‘Meet me in the lobby at 9:00! We’re going!’ Tell me what some of your favorite rides are. Michelle: “There’s a lot of them! Like I’ve mentioned before, there’s not a bad road in this area. We provide a ride called The Gauntlet. It’s a 133 miles in the north mountains of Georgia. Wolf Pen Gap is a 12-mile road with tons of switchbacks and curves. It comes out at Lake Winfield. A great place to stop and take photos. Then there is the Richard B. Russell Scenic Highway. It was repaved last year. It’s a beautiful, beautiful road that will take you over to Helen, Georgia. Pick a road. Go see them. It’s awesome!” Debbie: “Let’s talk about the cabins. Oh, the cabins are gorgeous! Two-bedroom cabin we’re

staying in right now has fresh, white linens! It’s just a homey place with nice flower arrangements and everything. What were you thinking about with the cabin design and the cabin concept? Michelle: “When we bought the Lodge, my whole idea is that there were so many women and motorcycling now. Whether the guys like it or not, or if the ladies ride their own or not, when we go on vacation, we’re usually making the decision as to where we’re going to stay. True? I think Ron would even get in on that one!

“So when we got this place that was part of my entire vision. I want to go to a place that is comfortable and clean and decorated nicely. It can still be a biker hangout but it can still be clean and nice. When I decorate our cabins, I try to put those extra special touches, you know? You’ve got the hair dryer so you don’t have to bring yours. When I decorate, I try to do it in a way where it feels comfortable and people are going to like it. It does feel ‘mountainy.’ I don’t like the moose-bear thing like everyone else does. So I tend to make it with a little biker theme but comfortable and clean. We have cabins here that you can look at on our website with the virtual tour. There are 28, and they are

BTR 22 | BORNTORIDE.COM

all different which is really neat! Folks come to stay in a cabin and they like it. I have folks that come all the time but change cabins on their visits because they want to see all of them and the different options that are available. It’s the uniqueness of our homeowners here that really shows through in the decorating. So, it’s kinda neat to see that as well!”

what most of our owners do, you go home and don’t worry about it. We take care of everything. We rent them out. We do all of the marketing, checking in and checking out, maintenance, mow the grass, all of those things and send you a check at the end of the month. There’s only a few lots left. Once they are gone, that will be it.”

Michelle: “That’s right. The resort was originally designed as a place where folks can have ownership. We’ve continued that vision. We’ve sold 28 of the cabins. We’ll probably end up with 52 once we’re done. We’re about halfway there. You can buy a cabin; one or two bedroom options. You’re in the one where there are two king bedrooms, a private motorcycle garage, lots of outdoor living space, outdoor hot tub. Great for two couples travelling together. Great for you, Ron, and the kids. Lots of options there. You can purchase the cabin! You will own the land, the cabin, all of the improvements. And if you elect to participate in the rental pool,

Debbie: “If you’re looking for a little bit of a different riding experience, a different week, a different getaway, or check out the mountains like we just did, check out Harley-Davidson of Tampa. They have the rentals for you! Chris took care of us and hooked us up with these two big bagger beauties! We hit the mountains on these and had a great time! Thanks a lot Chris, and thanks to Gary Bang for hooking us up with these two big bikes from Harley-Davidson of Tampa. The rental was easy, the bikes were in great shape and they made sure we were safe for the road. That is important to Born To Ride and our family!

Debbie: “So this is a cabin that you can either rent for a weekend, a week, two weeks, the summer. Or purchase? You handle the maintenance for them, right?

Debbie: “I got my eye on one of those right about now! Copperhead Lodge! Blairsville, Georgia. Beautiful roads, beautiful cabins, beautiful lodge and scenery and the best people you could ever work with!

No matter the season, there is always a reason to visit Copperhead Lodge.

Introducing the Love Jugs Cool-Master – Make Your Harley Super Cool! The Love Jugs Cool-Master is the newest model from Hammerhead Engineering, manufacturers of the Original Love Jugs, the World’s Most Powerful Cooling System for Harley-Davidson motorcycle engines. Its’ innovative patented design helps keep Harley riders cooler … especially in stop and go traffic since V-Twin air cooled engines can approach and exceed 500 degrees. Temperatures this high will destroy the lubricating capabilities of your engine oil, damage your power plant and generally ruin your riding day by “shutting down.” The ONLY way to cool things down is to consistently run a powerful stream of air across the engine’s cooling fins. That’s the job the Love Jugs Cool-Master does best. Its patented dual fan cooling system delivers more cooling air that any other product on the market. The new Love Jugs Cool-Master features: • State-of-the-art fan motors deliver the most cooling air (CFM) ever offered in a Harley engine cooling system • Smaller size fans, coupled with the new compact styling appeals to many enthusiasts concerned with keeping cool and looking cool • Custom look that’s at home on a $100,000 custom bagger or 25 year old Electra Glide • Easy to use recessed switches on the solid sleek face of each fan motor

BTR 28 | BORNTORIDE.COM

• Lustrous smooth outer band on the fan motor cover gives it a cool custom compact look • Looks like it is an original OEM part from the factory • Simple to install … takes less than an hour with no special tools • 100% Money Back Guarantee and a full One Year Warranty The introductory price of the all new Love Jugs Cool-Master is $399, and is available now on the company web site. At the Pink Shell Beach Resort and Marina, “

Meet the Silver Fox With their fabulous beaches, water sports, shopping, dining and entertainment it’s no wonder Fort Myers Beach is enjoyed by over 1.8 million visitors every year. Fort Myers Beach has gained a reputation as the World’s Safest Beach because of no undertow and shallow water. People can walk the entire 7-mile length of the island along its sandy shores. Fort Myers Beach is on Estero Island which is home of spectacular “natural beaches” and breathtaking sunsets. Recently I called The Pink Shell Resort in

BTR 30 | BORNTORIDE.COM

Ft. Meyers and asked to speak to their marketing manager, because I wanted to do a destination location feature and the Pink Shell was high on my list of places I wanted to highlight. Soon after, I had the pleasure of meeting Ellis Etter, the head of marketing for the resort. At that meeting he told me, “Ron, I read your magazine every month, and we’d like to invite you and your family to stay here at The Pink Shell so you can experience first-hand the exceptional service, hospitality and amenities offered to guests at our resort.” He was absolutely right. We had an unbelievable stay. Everything was first class. Getting to know Ellis “The Silver Fox” Etter we found out that he was a super guy who loves to ride, but more than that he is Born To Ride. We want to introduce, now, to Mr. Ellis Etter, the Silver Fox of the Pink Shell and Baxkin Management Company.

Tell us what you do at the Pink Shell, and where you are located? I’m the regional director of sales and marketing. The Pink Shell Beach Resort and Marina is located on the southwest Florida Gulf Coast, between trendy Naples and laid-back Sanibel and Captiva Islands. The Pink Shell Beach Resort & Marina sits nestled in a stunning natural environment at

the tip of Estero Island on Fort Myers Beach, providing sweeping beachfront views and sugarwhite sands stretching along the Gulf of Mexico.

What does the Pink Shell Resort have to offer as an ultimate destination resort? Pretty much anything you can think of to do, short of snow skiing and mountain climbing, is available at the Pink Shell. With 12 lush acres and 213 deluxe beachfront accommodations, the Pink Shell includes all the conveniences and amenities you’d expect from a family-friendly resort including a full service marina. Try your hand at sailing or experience the excitement of a dolphin-sightseeing tour on a Wave Runner. Enjoy waterfront dining or sip poolside cocktails at Bongo’s. Find rejuvenation at our full-service Aquagene Spa. The kids will love being in our Octopool, the undersea fantasy pool, or have fun spending a day of adventure with the KiddsKampp® crew. For the back bay or offshore angler boat rentals are available, or book a charter with one of our experienced guides. If you have the time, we have the activity. We are also a great location for couples who enjoy relaxing and reconnecting.

You can get to the resort by land or by sea? Yes, come by car or come by boat. From the

airport Exiting Southwest Florida International Airport, take the Terminal Access Road to Ben Hill Griffin Parkway/Treeline Extension. Turn right and proceed to Daniels Parkway. Turn left and travel west on Daniels Parkway for approximately 4 miles to Ben C. Pratt/Six Mile Cypress Parkway. • Turn left at the light. • Via Route 75 take exit 131. • Travel 4.5 miles on Ben C. Pratt/Six Mile Cypress Parkway. You will cross U.S. Rte. 41. Turn left on Summerlin Road. Travel west on Summerlin Road for 4 miles to the Route 865 San Carlos Boulevard exit. (This is a right exit off Summerlin Road; do not go over the San Carlos Bridge) At the traffic light for San Carlos Boulevard turn left under the overpass onto San Carlos Boulevard headed west. Travel 2.5 miles on San Carlos Boulevard and cross the Matanzas Pass Bridge. Turn right as you come over the bridge onto Estero Boulevard North. Travel 0.75 miles to the Pink Shell Beach Resort. The registration office is on the left. By boat via the outside passage, use chart number 11427, set your course for the Morse (A) 16- foot high marker SC. From that point, pick out the 16-foot flashing red “2” approximately 1 mile to the north-northwest. You’ll be able to pick out a well-marked channel leading off from San Carlos Bay into Matanzas Pass, making a 90 degree turn behind the northwestern hook of Estero Island.

The marina at the Pink Shell Beach Resort is located ¼ mile inside the no wake zone and is highly visible to starboard, adjacent to day beacon “13.”

Is the Pink Shell motorcycle friendly? I know you are a rider; how long have you been riding? What do you ride, and can you describe the riding you like to do? Where in southwest Florida do you ride? The Pink Shell is motorcycle friendly with some under cover parking. I’ve been riding motorcycles for more than 40 years. I currently ride a 2011 Harley-Davidson Electra Glide Classic. I like riding with small groups but at the same time enjoy the lone scoot once in a while. Since moving to Florida from Pennsylvania 14 years ago I’ve pretty much ridden all over Southwest and Central Florida, Daytona to Key West.

While we were there, we had a magnificent time; we never had to leave the resort. Tell us about the restaurants you have onsite and what they feature? Jacks located in the Captiva Villas at the Pink Shell Beach Resort and Marina features a bountiful daily breakfast buffet from 7:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Jacks is also the perfect venue for hosting group functions and beautiful evening wedding receptions

overlooking our pristine beach, the Gulf of Mexico and Southwest Florida’s beautiful barrier islands, while basking in a magnificent sunset. Bongo’s is our pool side beach side Bar and Grille featuring tropical beverages, light cuisine, signature sandwiches and flavorful floribbean cuisine for lunch and dinner.

Tell us about your Daytona location, and will you have rooms for Biktoberfest and Bike Week? Our sister property in Daytona is the The Plaza Resort and Spa, 600 N. Atlantic Avenue. It’s located right on the beach, central to all popular Daytona Beach attractions and things to do. The historic, beachfront Plaza Resort & Spa, Daytona Beach, FL is the perfect Daytona Beach hotels choice for couples and families. This property normally sells out for Biktoberfest and Bike week so book early.

This 2-cylinder engine features Yamaha’s “Crossplane Concept,” 270-degree crank, which provides linear torque development in response to the rider’s throttle input. Among the advantages of the in-line 2-cylinder engine are: (1) linear torque development, (2) smooth torque characteristics and a strong feeling of acceleration in the low to mid rpm range, (3) pulling power that extends to the mid-upper rpm range (4) a light, slim and compact design, and (5) excellent level of rider/machine communication. A new 6-speed transmission has also been adopted to match the new engine. The transmission “stacks” the input/output shafts to centralize mass and to keep the overall engine size shorter front to back, which optimizes engine placement in the frame for outstanding weight balance. Roscoe’s Chili Challenge

The Best Ole-Skool

Biker Party In The State

As we all know, the so-called “friendly neighborhood rivalry” can sometimes go real bad. However, here is one rivalry that turned out about as good as one could expect. Way back in 1986, Roscoe Tomlin and friend, Li’l Hank, often argued as to who could brew up the best pot of chili. A challenge was presented, a cook-off set up, and the Chili Challenge was born. Now, as I get it, Li’l Hank was voted the winner by all their mutual friends who attended this backyard cook-off. It was unanimous that this party become an annual event, and so, this handful of chili lovers has, down through the years, become probably the best biker party in

BTR 38 | BORNTORIDE.COM

the state of Florida! Now folks, I don’t say that lightly! In just the 20 years that I’ve been going, I’ve seen it grow to well over 3,000 attendees. It has overflowed out of Roscoe’s backyard and into the adjoining acreage—permanent structures have been erected to accommodate all the planned activities. There are beautifully manicured camping areas, a large well lit secure parking area, many vendors of all kinds, lots of competitions of interest to just about everyone. But with growth comes change ... changes that sometimes don’t please everyone. I guess no matter how hard one tries, you just can’t

please everybody. But you know what? These complainers just keep coming back once they realize that the changes are necessary to handle the growing size of this event. Me? I’ve never had a problem; I just “go with the flow!” So, why not join me this 7,8 & 9, 2014, and see for yourself just what a “real biker party” is all about. See the ad elsewhere in this issue for directions, activities, and camping. When we say, “Roscoe does it right!” ...Hey, we know what we’re talking about! My heartfelt thanks to Roscoe and the crew for the hospitality afforded me all these many years! Ride safe, and GOD bless you all!! Miserable George

DO YOU RIDE SMART?

Modern motorcycles demand a high level of skill from their riders:

“…technological change for the motorcycle rider may demand heightened bodily agility and dexterity to handle the physical forces and consequences of faster accelerating (and stopping) machines, and to manage the risks of collisions with car-driver assemblages increasingly cocooned and anaesthetized from the presence of other road users.” (Pinch & Reimer, in press)

Modern motorcycles also require a high level of responsibility from their riders: S Say no to drinking and riding M Make yourself more visible to motorists A Always wear your helmet when you ride R Ride in control (within legal and personal limits) T Train regularly and get endorsed

Engine Treatment testimonial “I had my 1999 Ford Power stroke Diesel engine treated with the CERMA ceramic advanced lubrication technology and immediately noticed a reduction in blow by. The engine has 240K miles on it, and was beginning to show some signs of wear, which have been reduced with the treatment. An additional improvement has been that the engine runs about 20 degrees cooler in use, and seems to have regained some of its old pickup. Joe & Mike get a big THANKS for your help!” CERMA Treatment Benefits: • Restores Compression and Engine Torque • Extends oil change intervals by 2-3 times • Active STM-3® with Carbon Guard

• Reduced maintenance, increased equipment life • Cleans Carbon Deposits within your engine • Reduced Engine Vibration and Noise (Harmonics) • Restores Fuel Economy* 4.2 to 21 % as Tested • Reduces Emission Gases (92% EPA certified Test) • Seals and Protects Metal Parts from Wear & Deposits • Stops cold start problems. 1. Jason what is Cycle Stop and how did your business come about? • Cycle Stop USA is a dealership alternative…PERIOD! We realized over a decade ago (before we were even a part of the industry) that the dealer didn’t care about us nearly as much once the bike sale was done. I was even told that: “I had to return to the dealership or my warranty was void!” I researched it found out that it wasn’t true. That is why we started Cycle Stop USA … we perform ALL of your maintenance for way less than the dealer, we use significantly better oils and filters than the dealer does and still kill them on pricing and we even do extended warranty work & insurance repair. 2. You have a new location, tell us about the move and your new location? Are you still in Plant City as well? As far as the new location … it is only new to us. Our Tampa store has been a bike shop for years. We are trying to build a national chain … that has always been our goal. Tampa has a TON of motorcycles and we aren’t done opening new locations around this area. Our mantra of: “Tires, Brakes, Batteries and Maintenance While You Wait” works for us and it works for our customers too. To be honest, I wish we had put one across from the dealership. My goal is to steer as many customers away from the dealers as we can. In regards to Plant City and are we still there: Absolutely! Plant City is about as loyal as a customer base gets … we will never not have a store there. Even if we get to our goal of 15 stores nationally … we will still

BTR 74 | BORNTORIDE.COM

call Plant City “Home base.” 3. Every shop has a specialty what is Cycle Stop’s specialty? Honestly … some people don’t ride a Harley … our specialty is treating them exactly the same as a rider who does. Let’s face it, in every city there are “Harley only” shops out there and they do good work … but so do we! We have as much skill as anyone does, we just don’t care what type of bike our customers ride. If you have a Harley then great! We know those better than most other bikes but if you don’t … we aren’t going to treat you any different than if you did. 4. Tell our readers why Cycle Stop is the place to purchase tires? We sell tires less than retail! We install tires for free with purchase on all Harley’s and most imports. We always perform a complimentary Safety Inspection and put that in writing for our customers. The best part is that you don’t even need an appointment! 5. How can you help riders service their motorcycles? Well for starters we offer free pick ups for Menu Services like oil changes, tires and Annual scheduled maintenances so there is no reason to take a day off of work to get your bike serviced 6. Any last words? Yep! Stop waiting in line at the dealership! Call us, we pick up your bike for free. We offer internet tire pricing, we can handle your extended factory warranty repairs, insurance and collision work and any custom installation.

For the Best Price on Tires give Jason a call, because he’s guarantee’s it

Spyke & Mike Check out Mike’s latest epic failure my BTR friends. Craven invites Mike and me over to the Moorhead compound to check out his state-of-the-art theft deterrent system. Mike was all up for that as he is always looking for new ways to protect me from being stolen. We cross the big bridge and wind our way through the darkest parts of Temple Terrace and pull into the trailer park. Mike rolls up to the entrance of the Moorhead lot. The driveway is filled with trucks missing wheels, a van missing the back doors, and a couple of motorcycles missing various parts. Craven is on the porch standing in front of a refrigerator—missing its doors. He yells out, “Park it at the fence line but don’t. …” Revving up the engine, Mike pulls the Fat Bird forward. Before shutting the engine off, he sets the kickstand down. The gravel starts to give way and he reaches over to grab the fence and gain control. That’s when all hell breaks loose. … Due to the dramatically increasing burglaries in the trailer park, Craven installs his latest ingenious idea. It’s a 6 ft. fence with an electrical wire running along the top. Actually, he picked up the biggest cattle charger Tractor Supply had and rigged it to run off of 220 amps from the nearest electric pole. Its original use was for 26 miles of fence at 60 amps. He then used an 8 ft. long grounding rod, and drove it 7.5 ft. into the ground. The higher amps and a deeper grounding rod are the keys to making the system work better! Craven was on his way to flip the switch off when we pulled up. Mike is now standing there, he’s got the motorcycle running between his legs and the live fence in his hand. Lucky for me, I was spooked by the falling scoot and flew off his shoulder. For Mike, time stood still. After regaining consciousness about an hour later, he gave me this description of his last thoughts and feelings when he grabbed that fence. “My eyes rolled back into my head, my ears curled downwards and I could feel the motorcycles ignition firing in the backside of my brain. Every time that 96 CID motor rolled over, I could feel the spark in my head. I was literally at one with the engine. It seemed as though the fence charger and the Fat Bird were fighting over who would control my electrical impulses.” “Science says you cannot crap, pee, and vomit at the same time. I beg to differ. Not only did I do all three at once, but my insides emptied

three different times in less than half a second. It seemed like there were minutes in between, but in reality the time was so close together it was like the exhaust pulses from the V-Twin Harley at high idle.” “At this point, I’m about 30 minutes (maybe 2 seconds) into holding onto the fence. My hand is wrapped around the wire, palm down so I can’t let go. The 8ft. long grounding rod is now accepting signals from me through the permadamp soil covering the leaky septic tank. Now I’m thinking the end is near. The Harley is starting to run rough. It has settled into a loping pattern as if it had some kind of big race cam. Covered in poop, pee, and vomit on my chest I think ‘oh god please die … pleeese die.’ But noooo, it settles into the rough lumpy cam idle nicely and remains there, like a pro stock Harley motor waiting for the twist of the throttle.” “I honestly don’t know how I got loose from the fence. Craven finally woke me from my electrically induced sleep and I now realize a few things: all my fillings have melted. I now have spasms in the bottoms of my feet and my left butt cheek (not the right, just the left). Poop, pee, and vomit when all mixed together, IS the worse smell in the world. My right eye will not open. My left eye will not close. I have three fingernails left and I can turn on Craven’s TV by farting while thinking of the number of two!” “That day change my life. I now have a newfound respect for all things electrical, I take time to let people finish their sentences, and I always shut the bike down first and triple check to make sure the kickstand will hold the scoot upright. The good news is that if a burglar does try to come over Craven’s fence, I can clearly visualize what his security system will do to him, and THAT gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling all over.” After hours on the couch and turning the TV on and off a dozen times, Mike finally gets up and says to me, “Damned lucky you’re not fried chicken! Let’s make like lightning and bolt outta here!” With that said, he awkwardly picks me up, walks slowly to the scoot, and places me behind the windscreen. Mike then gets my wings in the wind and the Fat Birds’ wheels down the road. SPYKE

Isn’t it Great to Know That When we Mess up, Jesus Paid the Price for Your Forgiveness Been seeing a lot of videos recently on Facebook showing the latest exploits of some bikers who seem to live according to the axiom, “Ready, Fire, Aim.” Some of the stunts, most of which have gone terribly wrong, are funny at first glance, providing nobody gets hurt. There’s one clip I saw last week where the rider decided to split lanes between two semi trailers, only to realize that the gap between the trailers was rapidly shrinking, kind of like a

BTR 80 | BORNTORIDE.COM

Keystone Cops clip. There are clips where the rider pops a wheelie up so high on a bagger that the bike proceeds to roll over backwards, with the now panicked former rider trying to get out of the way. Been there, done that, on a dirt bike in the woods, and it isn’t as much fun as it appears to be! On several of the videos we watch mishaps on the road, such as running into the back of a car that the biker was planning to pass with a lane split, or bikes that got laid down due to overriding the rider’s ability. That sliding bike often either hits a car or another biker. Yes, we all cringe at the fact that an errant bike appears to be shedding parts all over the road, and the custom paint job is getting “sanded” by the asphalt. It hurts enough to see a fellow biker’s ride get trashed, but what about the innocent rider that was riding safely, and is dragged into someone else’s mess? Somebody has to pay the price for the damage caused, either for inflicting hurt physically or financially, and for the consequences of the actions that led to these accidents. That’s why we have insurance policies, which are designed to restore folks that were hurt by another’s actions. When the guilty party is

called upon to restore the damages he has created, the cost is often paid by an insurance company. The insurance company did not directly cause the damage, but contractually, becomes the one who stands in the place of the guilty party. The insurance company pays for the transgression. There was One who came over 2,000 years ago to stand in the place of judgment, not for His own transgressions, for He had none, but for the wrong actions of man. His name was Jesus, and He came for all mankind. In Hebrews 9:22, the Bible tells us that “according to the Law, one may almost say, all things are cleansed with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.” The blood this refers to was ultimately the blood of Jesus, who gave His life on the cross. While He was without sin, He took man’s place, and laid down His life for you and for me. Just like insurance policies that pay for restoration, Jesus paid the price for your forgiveness. Isn’t it great to know that when we mess up, He’s already paid our price? In the Wind, Denny Dingler
