RIDE SMART POSTURE Maintaining good posture in the saddle is an important component of good riding. Not only will paying attention to your posture help you stay comfortable over long distances, it will also enhance your control of the motorcycle by helping your body stay relaxed. Sit on the motorcycle in an upright position with your back straight, your head up, and your eyes focused on the roadway ahead. Ride with your knees and elbows turned inward. They should be comfortably bent (not locked) so you can quickly move or respond to changes in riding conditions. Keep both feet on the footrests at all times so you can quickly position them to operate the rear brake pedal or shift lever. Grip both hand grips firmly with your wrists turned downward and knuckles pointed up. Make a conscious effort to keep your body limber and relaxed. Tensed muscles will cause you to fatigue quickly, and will lessen your

ability to respond promptly to any obstacles that might appear in your path. A relaxed rider is a ready rider. The better your skills are, the more relaxed you’ll be. • A wrist-down position on the throttle hand is recommended. It will help avoid over revving the engine and will make it easier to reach for the front brake lever when it comes time to slow down. • In a standard turn, lean with the motorcycle for smoothness and stability • In a slow, tight turn, such as turning around in a parking lot, it helps to counterweight by leaning in the opposite direction of the motorcycle and direction of the turn. Put pressure on the outside footrest. For more information go to www.msf-usa.org

EXPEDITION

If you say, “I strangled Alice” fast enough that’s how you pronounce the name of this town, spelled Ystradgynlais explained Dakar legend Simon Pavey. We had gathered in Wales, UK, at the world-renowned Off Road Skills rider-training center to participate in a course especially designed by Simon for the upcoming Road of Bones expedition 13 riders & 1 Co-rider were about to embark on a journey of a lifetime. “Born To Ride is Honored to tell this Amazing Story:” Ron Galletti

Today is the day that the 14 riders and support vehicle depart from London’s Ace Café heading 28,500 Kilometers East with final destination Magadan, Eastern Russia. Along the way they will pass through 16 countries, ride through all weather conditions and experience some of the best adventure motorcycling in the world.

In 2005 four riders gathered in London to begin a four month ride across Siberia; unknown to us this ride would change the course of our lives. We were riding for our friend, our mate, Kathy McLean who suffered from the very rare Freidreichs Ataxia disease, we formed a charity along with “Kath” held fund raising events from Rio de Janeiro to London and Sydney and proceeded to ride halfway around the world raising money and awareness as we went. Once the journey was complete the fundraising for our tiny charity stopped so after two years of deliberating Compass Expeditions was formed and continue to donate to Freidreichs Ataxia Network today; sadly but expectedly Kathy died in 2013, a fighter to the end.

Starting with five BMW F 650 GS Twins and a worn out Toyota Troopcarrier offering five short tours of South America, Compass Expeditions has gone on to become one of the world’s leading motorcycle tour companies with over 35 bikes from the entire GS range five support vehicles and over 30 tours on every continent, (excepting Antarctica), and a rental fleet in Australia, all in nine years! Each year we are lucky enough to have Charley Boorman lead a tour for us in Australia and have Simon Pavey run an off road skills course followed by a tour also in Australia. Joining us for the 2014 Road of Bones Expedition were Walt & Pam USA, (BMW R1200GSA), Robert USA, (Suzuki DR 650), Bayne Canada, (BMW F800), Eric

Canada (BMW F800 GS), Brian Zimbabwe, (R1200 GS), Ray Australia, (Suzuki DR 650), Andrew Australia, (BMW R1200 GS), Jane Australia (BMW F650 GS), Leanne Australia, (BMW F650 GS), Tim Australia, (BMW F800 GS), John Australia, (BMW R1200 GSA) & Geoff Australia (Triumph Tiger XC800). After two years of planning we were about to depart on the 105 day Road of Bones expedition that would take the riders, from the UK, to France, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia and Russia. With the Off Road Skills training complete the team enjoyed a superb breakfast at the legendary bikes hangout the Ace Café in London before crossing the tunnel into BORNTORIDE.COM | BTR 17

Europe. Mission statement: To provide riders with that elusive “life changing experience of a lifetime” We made quick time across Europe but not before riding through spectacular vineyards of the Rhine Valley and amongst castles scenically along the Rhine River and visiting the amazing Neuschwanstien castle created by the mad Bavarian king, Ludwig II before experiencing what is widely regarded as one of the finest passes in Europe, the immense Grossglockner. The Hungarian capital of Budapest, wonderfully located on the Danube, stunning Romania of Count Dracula fame and the Black Sea resort island of Nessebar, Bulgaria were visited before we reached the Turkish border. Thirty Turkish bikers

had ridden seven hours to greet us at the border and escort the group into Istanbul. By the time we reached this amazing vibrant and historical city we were already down one bike as Brian’s BMW R 1200 suffered a big end failure and his trip was over, on the 1200 at least, Brian became our spare rider and only had three days “off” a bike for the entire expedition. We crossed the amazing country of Turkey, slept in caves converted to hotels and marveled at the Ottoman houses that hung precariously over raging rivers. Riding towards Georgia in the Turkish far northeast was biking nirvana as we rode amongst tea plantations that clung tenaciously to steep hillsides and through vast canyon lands on empty roads that followed the course of lonely rivers.

Georgia proved to be a revelation but we weren’t to make it any further than the capital Tbilisi. News had come through that the only border open with Russia had been closed due to a deadly landslide that killed eight truckers. Our itinerary had been thrown into chaos and a new plan hastily hatched which involved riding back to Europe after every conceivable alternate plan had been considered. Returning to the Georgian–Turkish border on our way back to Europe a border guard asked, “Where are you going,” “Russia eventually” we replied, “why not cross at the Georgian–Russia border”? He asked perplexed, incredibly the border had reopened the day we were leaving Georgia to go back into Turkey, another U-turn and rewriting of the itinerary ensued as we BORNTORIDE.COM | BTR 21

“We moved on, in more wet weather visiting Bran Castle, reputedly Dracula’s castle, but of course it isn’t and it is in question whether the man ever spent a night there but Romanian tourism wont let the facts get in the way of a good story.”

Khan, Tamerlane and various despot emirs all had a turn at ruling these lands and all have left their mark. Some of the finest riding of the entire expedition was experienced in Kyrgyzstan as we rode the rarely visited and lofty Kazaman Pass, three days of rough off road riding amongst towering snowcapped peaks and lonely nomadic ger camps that dotted the landscape, with many riders declaring it the “greatest riding days of their lives.” Once again we crossed the vast empty Kazakh steppe camping beside deep blue lakes watching stunning sunsets. Wild dust storms blew in from the steppe at times having the riders lean at an alarming angle into the wind only to be stung by the sand as it blasted into us.

rode hastily back for the Georgian border with Russia. We rode the legendary Georgian Military Highway a pass of staggering beauty and amazing history with poet’s writers and armies all travelling this road. The highway winds deep into the Caucasus passing turquoise lakes and numerous monasteries in stunning locations, switchback after switchback greeted the riders as we rode beyond the green fertile valleys into a stark beautiful landscape high above the snowline. At last we reached Russia but they were far from happy to see us and it took eight hours for us to cross the border, with representatives from the local Rotary club waiting a staggering twelve hours to greet us!

The Rotary Club organized a somber visit to Beslan, scene of the horrific massacre of over 300 people, nearly 200 of them children in 2004, before we rode east into Russia proper. It wasn’t long before we were leaving Russia to cross the mighty Kazakh Steppe as we turned south toward Uzbekistan. Camping out on the immense steppe was an incredible experience as the riders were surrounded by a vastness and silence that was long thought to have disappeared in this world. We entered the storybook lands of the fabled Silk Road in Uzbekistan skirting the Kyzyl Kum Desert as we rode into Samarkand home to some of the finest antiquities in all of Central Asia with the mighty Registan as its centerpiece. well beyond the rivers. Mongolia exacted its toll on the riders with one rider breaking his leg and another breaking three ribs amongst the numerous falls, these were tough days but it was what we had come for and at nights we were amply rewarded with wonderful ger camp accommodations and log fires in impossibly beautiful locations. Crossing back into Russia for the last time only took three hours before we rejoined the Trans Siberian Highway heading due east into a remote empty landscape of the endless forests of the Taiga. We eventually reached the M56 or Lena Highway and hit the rough dirt with the sign reading Magadan 3177ks with the vast majority of it dirt. We rode directly north to

The Russians seemed happier to see us this time and the border crossing only took five hours! We were riding into remote Russian now amongst immense wheat farms interspersed with huge stands of Fir trees that served as boundaries. After 2,200 miles since leaving Almaty, Kazakhstan, riding virtually non-stop each day we reached the spectacular Lake Baikal, referred to as the “jewel in the Siberian Crown. This stunning blue water lake is a lake of superlatives being the world’s oldest lake, deepest lake and holding 20% of the worlds unfrozen fresh water with 80% of its flora and fauna found nowhere else on earth. Continuing on the Trans Siberian Highway we reached Mongolia a country that offers

the riders simply some of the most spectacular riding of the expedition. Mongolia is a landscape of vast yawning valleys dotted with nomadic ger dwellers fattening their stock on the lush green pastures before the brutal winter arrives. Rough dirt tracks disappear over the horizon and riders can choose to take anyone of these tracks, as they all lead to the next remote village, or ride across the immense open landscape. The colors of Mongolia are highlighted by an immense blue sky and beautiful light that makes the entire country glow with a wonderful clarity. The riding became tough as we faced numerous rivers, some deep, all with difficult challenging muddy entries and exits and deep slippery mud sections that extended

The road has always been a place to find the answers, or ignore the questions.

“We had an amazing ride through the Caucuses however our jubilant mood was soon soured but an 8 hour border crossing and a miserable scam at the Russian border where one police officer invites us to jump the lengthy que only to be busted by another officer wanting to charge us US$300 for crossing double lines as instructed to do so by his counterpart. Welcome to Russia.”

one of the world’s most isolated cities of Yakutsk, capital of Yakutia before crossing the mighty Lena River, via ferry. The city has no road links and is only able to be entered via ferry. Final bike preparations were carried out in Yakutsk with servicing and tire changing completed before the final push to Magadan and the evenings were spent with the Night Wolves, a great group of guys and girls belonging to what is Russia’s biggest biker club. Under a vast blue Yakutian sky we departed Yakutsk crossed the Lena River again and with a certain trepidation we began what we had all come for, the Road of Bones. The Road of Bones has a tragic yet little known history; Stalin populated his Gulag

system with prisoners from across Russia and POWs during WW2 and interned them in Gulag camps along numerous tracks that led to the many gold & tin mines that exist in the far north east of Russia. It was an unimaginably brutal place with an estimated 2 million people dying during the construction of these tracks and at various mines, their bodies simply left on the tracks thus these tracks became known as the Road of Bones. Immediately the challenges were thrown up with hundreds of miles of deep gravel that a lot of riders hated. We also broke our 5th and last set of trailer springs after only the first day on the Road of Bones and were forced to hire a “local” version of the VW Kombi to assist us to carry our

considerable amount of bike spares, luggage and camping equipment, we needed to reduce the weight on the trailer if it were to make it to Magadan. We crossed the Aldan River, yet another mighty river in what was now the extremely remote Kolyma Region. We ascended into the mountains the deep gravel became less so and the Road of Bones became a 50 mph track. The riding was magnificent as we rode amongst larch and fir covered mountains that were dissected by wild rivers all the while the colors of autumn were highlighted by the ever-present blue Kolyma skies, these were days we wished would never end. The weather was holding and remained stunning but was also a double-edged BORNTORIDE.COM | BTR 25

sword, with the higher speeds we were averaging one flat tire every 80 miles and were quickly falling behind as we changed up to 11 flat tires in one solitary day! The extremely remote area of the Kolyma Region is littered with abandoned settlements and a number of, what once were, huge cities. Entire cities stood utterly deserted it was as if the residents of these cities fled an imminent disaster, riding amongst them was both surreal and strangely eerie. One city that does indeed remain is Ust Nera, a more forlorn god forsaken settlement would be hard to imagine. All around stood crumbling buildings and everywhere

one looked were heaps of rusting scrap metal, cars bodies, trucks and skeletons of factories. Black coal dust permeated every inch of Ust Nera and we couldn’t wait to leave. Our desperation to escape was exasperated after Walt hit a pedestrian bringing them both crashing to the ground. The pedestrian ran away and Walt rode off to a quiet place to repair his bike and gather his thoughts but not before locals asked Walt if he wanted a priest? We rode into Magadan a day late after riding 16,500 miles and suffering 18 flat tires in five days. Arriving is always the pinnacle of the expedition and as we neared I thought of all that we had

LOOK AT BURGERS DIFFERENTLY AT HARLEY-DAVIDSON TAMPA BURGER CULTURE I & II

There are few things more satisfying for a “burger lover” than to have a burger cooked to perfection and made to order. If you’re a burger lover then you understand this sentiment completely, and if you don’t understand then maybe it’s time you tracked down the Burger Culture truck, I or II. Owner’s Ashley and Gabe have been driving the Burger Culture vehicle for three years now. According to them, “We decided we wanted to share our love for burgers with the world, so we started a food truck. Then after our first year we decide to add a second truck.” Any burger connoisseur knows the key BTR 30 | BORNTORIDE.COM

to a great burger is the freshness of the ingredients. “We pride ourselves on only carrying the freshest ingredients. We use the best beef and make all our patties by hand, we refuse to ever let our meat touch a freezer! Our Brioche buns are fresh baked for us out of Jacksonville. We like to combine different ingredients that you would not ordinarily put on a burger, and after one bite you will be looking at burgers differently.” But wait there’s more … sometimes you may prefer a sandwich less meaty than a burger but you still want a hearty sandwich. Burger Culture is known to prepare a mean sourdough grilled cheese sandwich. Unlike most grilled cheese sandwiches this grilled cheese is

a triple layer. Yep, a three- cheese surprise (American, Cheddar, and Havarti) to appease the hunger pangs inside your stomach and yet not leave you feeling bloated or sluggish. Oh yeah, if you want your grilled cheese a little heartier, add some bacon or prosciutto! Burger lovers! There is only one thing left to do and that’s head over to 6920 N. Dale Mabry highway and let Ashley and Gabe create a burger you won’t soon forget. The Burger Culture trucks I and II are on the road seven days a week, 11 a.m.to 4 p.m. So, the next time you have a craving for a differently type of burger, give Burger Culture a call 813-992-7444; we’re pretty sure you’ll be glad you did!

Everyone must learn the value of work if they are to be successful in life.

Clay County Sheriff Rick Beseler presents the 2011 Carleton F. Tweed Memorial Horsemanship Trophy to Tyler during the Boys Ranch Open House and Horse Show. “It helps me achieve goals and provides me the encouragement to keep moving in the right direction. The Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches believes a strong work ethic is learned through having regular chores as well as various jobs while growing up. Each Youth Ranches child is expected to keep their room clean, do their own laundry and help with chores around the cottage. They are not paid for these chores but expected to do them as a part of the cottage family. Along with their chores, each child has a specific job on campus. In order to get a job, they must fill out an application and interview with their potential boss. Through their efforts our boys and girls can receive raises, promotions and demotions. On occasion they may be fired. Jobs are located at a variety of worksites around campus, but can include farm work, maintenance, food services, grounds keeping, mechanics or office work. Different jobs require special skills, and they may have to show proficiency through a test to use tools or equipment. In their job, youth earn spending money which enables us to teach financial responsibility. More importantly, they learn work skills and how to work with a boss and co-workers. Tyler has shown characteristics in his approach to his work that all employers desire. He handles his job and responsibilities as if it is his own enterprise he is running. In Tyler’s job at the Van Ness farm he has earned great responsibility. The Van Ness farm is a working ranch, and it provides revenue to help run our campus.

Tyler treats the equipment and each animal as if they are his very own. His is responsible in his tasks. Farm Manager Jeff Parker says, “Tyler is trustworthy and responsible. He works well independently and with others. He can be given any task and he completes it quickly and correctly.” Tyler has lived at the Boys Ranch for four years. He has won awards related to general work, cattle, character and leadership, including the 2011 Carleton F. Tweed Memorial Horsemanship Trophy. The Tweed award is presented during the Grand Entry ceremonies of the Boys Ranch Open House and Horse Show held every October. It is presented to the Rancher that maintains a strong participation in riding activities, excellent skills in horsemanship, significant interest in the care and well-being of horses and other animals, and he must demonstrate high standards and positive behavior in all areas of Ranch life. Tyler is a great example of a young man who has applied the principle of work to his life. “I love working at the farm,” says Tyler. “It helps me achieve goals and provides me the encouragement to keep moving in the right direction.” You’re invited to join Tyler, and the rest of the Ranchers, at the 2014 Boys Ranch Open House and Horse Show to celebrate our 57th Anniversary. Dress up in your Tyler is approved to work with every piece of equipment at western wear, put on some boots and come the farm. Women’s World

“HUMDRUM LIFE OR EXTRAORDINARY LIFE? IT IS YOUR CHOICE!” Never allow naysayers to stop you from living your life! Some love you and mean well. And some are simply what I call “play-it-safers”; creatures of the commonplace and slaves of the ordinary. Others are simply jealous and envy the fact that they are too lazy to change their lives, or too scared. They sit on the sideline discouraging all others because misery likes company.

“Life is full of opportunities to grow, explore and to do something that makes a difference after you’ve gone.”

I constantly remind people not to allow fear to rob you from living. We all have an expiration date when we are leaving this world, and we will not leave a second earlier or later. In the meantime be smart. If you are going to ride, take the proper classes and ride safely. If you have considered getting a bike, go shop it. Ask many questions and get the right fit for you. Do what makes you happy and create a meaningful life. Don’t let other’s fears and limited life stop you from living! Go live! Go make things happen and don’t fall into the wasteland of I woulda, coulda, shoulda. We all have what it takes within us so instead come join the land of I DID IT and I CAN! WOMEN RIDERS ARE A SPECIAL BREED!

Life isn’t supposed to be a boring! Day-in-day-out with the same routine is not the way to live. Is your work just bearable? Are evenings automated and boring? Are you simply going through the motions: getting home, eating dinner, watching television, surfing the net, taking care of everyone else but you? Do you simply expect to go to bed, wake up, and repeat it all over again day after day after day? STOP! Life should be a passionate adventure that is full of meaning and excitement. Life is full of opportunities to grow, explore and to do something that makes a difference after you’ve gone. Set yourself free, step into a life that is meaningful and be YOU!!! I want to invite you to become fully alive again, like when you were in your teens and twenties. Leave behind all the nonsense and step into a life that has meaning, passion, and excitement. Forget worrying about what others think. You only need your own self-approval. Forget living like others expect and want you to be. Dare to live your life your way. Riding motorcycles is a perfect example of living your life passionately and your way. Many women experience such negative reactions from friends and family members when they say they want to ride. People will tell women such things as: are you totally crazy, what is wrong with you, you must be having a midlife crises, what are people going to say, what are you thinking, are you trying to complicated your life, think of your family, you don’t have the skills, you wont pass the riding class, it is too dangerous, I will not be seen with you etc. … It is so sad to see others listen to naysayers who simply suck the life right out of you.

BTR 44 | BORNTORIDE.COM

Riders have learned to bring out their inner courage to get out there and to live. They never allowed fear to control their life. Whatever the reason is for riding, we all have experienced some form of fear but women riders are a determined special breed that does not allow fear to rob us from living. We have learned to overcome the fears and either ride as a passenger or graduated to taking the front seat of our own motorcycles. Those that have taken the extra step to ride solo understand the incredible empowering feeling of fun, freedom, and control this machine gives us. If you have not gone for your endorsement DO IT! You can’t understand the incredible feeling of riding solo until you actually do it. Life is too short; do not waste it living someone else’s expectations. Don’t let the opinion and fears of others limit your life. Have the courage to live your passion and dreams. - Hayley B. Anthony Bevilacqua’s ELITE SERVICE

is in for. After every service, the bike gets road tested and cleaned. We spend 1/2 hour looking over and inspecting the vehicle at no cost to you. We have clients that schedule safety inspections just for their own piece of mind. AT NO COST! You know the story ... tell us about the guy who went to another shop but came back to you, why?

You offer elite service, please explain? We offer complimentary pick up service, collision repair, routine maintenance, paintwork, tuning and performance upgrades. We handle all the claims and call insurance companies for you. I feel that we provide a level of service that is unmatched. Being an elite service facility is a culmination of qualities: passion, experience, pride in what we do, and integrity every day with every job we do. Everyone in this company has that quality no matter what his or her title is. “Put Pride in your Ride!” is not just our motto, it is what we do! ELITE- the group or part of a group regarded as the best. It’s all about pride and work ethic. I feel we offer elite services to the motorcycle and power sports industry because this is our specialty (it’s all we do). Service and repairs is our business and that’s it. I personally have 14 years experience working on all makes and models. Shelby has been by my side for 2 years now and he shares the same passion as I do; and I trust him and his work. It’s all about taking pride in what you do and that reflects in your work. You are only as good as your work and the service you provide to your clients and to the industry. We go over every bike/vehicle front to back regardless of what it

It started as a phone conversation, a very long one. He was quoted a price for repairs that were diagnosed at another facility. He was told what the issue was; however, the facility did not have the special tools required to perform the repair. He wanted me to quote the job over the phone based on what he was told by the other shop. I gave him our price (which I believe was slightly higher) for the job and further explained that it was unrealistic based on us not inspecting the bike ourselves. Then further educated him on how we would go about resolving the bikes problem. Long story short, we got the job.

And how much did you save him? We saved him $230.00 from the original quote per our phone conversation. It turned out that his bike was misdiagnosed from the prior facility. It was half the work and labor that he was originally quoted to repair the problem. He was blown away to say the least.

People trust you with their bikes, how does that make you feel? It makes me proud of whom I am as a person; and it makes me very proud of my team. It is a real honor to earn trust from people, especially during today’s times. I truly believe you get back what you put out.

Tell us about the blue bagger Ultra Classic you worked on, what did you do to it? It was a 2000 Harley-Davidson Ultra Classic for one of our longtime clients that he absolutely loves. It started out as a minor collision repair that led to a total renovation. It went from touching up a few painted parts to full custom paint with

graphics all to customer’s specs. We installed a Baker DD6 Transmission conversion, performance cams and pushrods, updated his whole cam chest to ‘07, later hydraulic tensioners, and roller chain, and then topped it off with a custom map/tune for his riding style. There were many small details and add-ons along the way. He simply could not justify the cost of a new bike, versus what it would cost to make his existing bike exactly what he wanted it to be. He was right!

Anthony, any last words about the pride you have in your service, and do you have anything to say to the readers reading this? Owning and operating a company by the name of Pride Cycles and Power Sports, I hope lets everyone know what we are all about. It is not just a name! I do not have investors or partners. Pride and Passion built this business, our reputation is all we have to help us grow and remain successful. To the Readers: Plan Ahead!!! Don’t wait until the last minute. Have us perform a complimentary safety inspection and service analysis. You will then know exactly what you do or do not need done on your bike. Then you can budget if need be and no one is under any pressure to get it done, especially before a major road trip. Cheap and best should never be in the same sentence. Think about that one for a minute. You are not operating a car or truck on four wheels with seat belts and air bags; you’re on two wheels! Cheap is not good! It should never be about finding the cheapest price and getting it done the fastest! I have heard more people refer to their bikes as their baby. Is it really your baby? If your child became ill, would you rather take them to a walkin clinic, or seek out a specialist for his or her specific needs. You’re on a motorcycle; your decisions should be made as if your own life depends on it, because it does! Call and schedule your needs today and let us put PRIDE IN YOUR RIDE! We are usually booked a week in advance. And there is a damn good reason why! When is the last time you went to see your doctor without an appointment? We will handle emergencies on case-bycase basis, but why wait, the longer you wait the worse the problem gets!

Let me introduce you to Thom Lillie of Lille Glassblowers, Inc. A couple of years ago I was sitting on the patio reading the morning paper and I noticed an article about a glassblower who had a studio in Smyrna, Georgia. At the BTR 58 | BORNTORIDE.COM

time I was looking for someone or something to photograph and I thought that the art of blowing glass could be a great subject. I googled the name of the glassblowing studio, and when I contacted them to tell them what I was interested in doing I was told to come

on up. I threw a flash kit, tripod and camera bag on the back of the Road King and headed on up I-75 to see what I could come up with. When I arrived I entered a studio surrounded by work tables full of ongoing glass projects.

An award shall reflect the achievement it recognizes.

At a table in the back a tall guy wearing sunglasses and a bandanna had a big ass flaming tool in one hand and a piece of redhot glass in the other. He was in the middle of a project and couldn’t really stop to meet and greet properly, so I set about getting

realized there was a story that went along with the pictures. My whole career I’ve met so many people with great stories when I thought I was only there for images, I should have learned to expect it by now. As we chatted while Thom continued to work the glass, I mentioned that I rode my bike up from my loft apartment in downtown Atlanta and he said he rode, also. At first it was just something that we had in common, but over time I saw that Thom is another one of those Georgians who can come from all walks of life and just happens to ride motorcycles. Thom’s first bike was a little red Honda 50 cc he received when he was just 7 years old. That’s another thing we had in common, my first motorized bike was the same model. He’s ridden many different bikes since that first red jewel, but now he sits atop a ’96 Yamaha Royal Star that he bought new. At the time he was thinking about purchasing a Harley-Davidson Heritage, but when he sat his 6’2” frame on the Royal Star, it just fit him perfectly. But as we know, usually one is not enough, so as of this writing Ideal Customs out of Clarksville, GA is building him a Café Racer from a Yamaha 750. Thom is a second generation glassblower. His father, Don Lillie, began blowing glass in 1949, when he started an apprenticeship at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. Afterwards Don got a job at Georgia Tech as a scientific glass blower, where he worked for 33 years. After perfecting his craft, in 1965 Don opened a small shop of his own at Six Flags Over Georgia and then one at Underground Atlanta. The first time Thom blew a piece of glass he was 8 years old and he burned his finger pretty badly, so at the time he didn’t want any part of this flaming hot business. And it didn’t help that most sons don’t want anything to do with what their fathers do for a living anyway, it’s the rebel in many of us. But as he got a little older, he saw the potential and realized he may have the talent that could help give him a vision of what he wanted to do with his own life. So in 1981 Thom signed up for classes at the University of Minnesota to study scientific glass blowing like his father had done some shots of him in action. While he kept 32 years earlier. In 1986 he moved back working to form a glass rod into a perfectly to Smyrna and together with his father they shaped golf club, we chatted as I started opened Lillie Glassblowers, Inc. Thom feels taking shots of this artist at work. I could tell that getting his degree in scientific glassthis was going to be simple to find wonder- blowing helps “you understand what is hapful photographs of this subject, but I soon pening to your material when you’re working Speak your mind without saying a word.

with it, it really gives a good boost to your foundation of knowledge … there’s a reason behind it. It’s not just putting glass together and getting a figure out of it, what this does is really opens up the design possibilities and techniques.” Much of Lillie’s contract work is for corporations and special events held around Georgia throughout the year, such as Petite Le Mans and the Vintage Motorcycle Races, both held at Road Atlanta. His work also decorates the homes and offices of personalities such as Elton John, Michael Jordan, the late actor Jimmy Stewart, President Bill Clinton, Dale Earnhardt and also is on display at Charlotte’s NASCAR Museum, just to name a few. ble for each project is important and is what helps carry on the excitement from day to day, from project to project. To Thom, “The satisfaction that you get afterwards becomes an addiction, so you look forward to the more challenging pieces. It’s more than just a business, I enjoy when a customer comes in and they’re ecstatic … ‘Oh my gosh, I haven’t seen anything like that before.’ You look to make the customer happy but then more important, I want to be happy with it.” He then adds, “There’s a quote that can be read when you’re coming in the building that my old man came up with about 30 years ago, ‘An award shall reflect the achievement it recognizes.’ If a guy wins the Nobel Peace Prize you don’t give him a plaque … you should give the recipient something that’s

worthy of their accomplishment.” When comparing his work in the studio to riding a motorcycle, “The first thing that comes to mind is when I’m making something, there’s going to be something tangible at the end of the journey. In glassblowing it’s something I can see, something I can look at. And on motorcycles it’s about memories but the journey on both can be very stimulating.” He also adds, “I’ve come up with some of my most creative designs while riding a motorcycle … the problem is I’m having such a great time on my bike but then I get a certain design and I want to get back to the studio to start on that design.” That could be a tough dilemma … to ride on or create. But Thom’s creativity isn’t limited to the

glass blowing studio. He also is pretty handy with a blow torch and a few wrenches and pliers. To me the most interesting motorcycle he has truly is a bicycle that became a motorcycle, in the true fashion of the early motorcycle pioneers who did the same thing which eventually lead to what we all ride today. Thom was surfing around eBay one day and found a thrift store type reproduction of an older model Huffy cruiser bicycle, with the original tires and turned up handlebars. He then found a 49 cc gas powered engine that he knew would fit just perfectly. With a blow torch, he has to use fire in his work it seems, he welded a bracket on the bicycle that allowed the seat to be pushed back on the bike and then he turned the handlebars down in a Café Racer style. He mounted

the 49 cc engine inside the frame, mounted the gas tank, painted it all black, moved the Huffy sticker to the tank and then with a few other modifications he had a ride that I think William Harley and Arthur Davidson would be proud of. In a single Saturday afternoon and for around $200 he had a bike that on first glance looks like it belongs in a vintage motorcycle museum. Another one of those creative engineering twinges that Thom gets from time to time l ead to a giant sized tricycle that he painted bright red and stands almost 10’ tall and seemed to make even Thom look like a little kid out on his first ride on the street. Like most creative people, the process never stops; it just keeps refining itself and morphing into something new.

Cool, Calm and Collected

when life is tough

For 40 years, I’ve assisted the best

athletes in the world and corporate executives meet adversity head-on in some of the toughest arenas on the planet. From The Masters, World Series, Super Bowl, NBA Finals, Wimbledon and boardrooms from the Fortune 500, I’ve provided concrete tools to be cool, calm and collected, especially during “moments of truth” when the next move you make can decide your fate. Here are three proven tools and techniques that you can deploy in any aspect of your life to bring an instant feeling of calm when you need it most.

™ The Palm Tree The sun sinks down across the horizon,

painting the sky with beautiful pinks and purples. The waves playfully reach their way up the sandy beach with a calm, bubbly rhythm. The graceful palm trees sway with the evening breeze. It’s just another sunset in Maui. If you’ve ever been to a sunset on a beach, I’ve brought you right back to it. It’s the ultimate in relaxation. Why? Do you ever associate stress with a palm tree? Of course not. When the hurricane comes however, the first line of defense is the amazing palm tree. Just like a “real life” hurricane such as a road rage experience, an angry significant other, or a crisis at work, the palm tree in you needs to absorb the devastating winds of adversity. As soon as a circumstance, condition or event displeases you or disturbs you, think of the palm tree. Have a palm tree thought before the life hurricane reaches full force. The palm tree reacts to a hurricane or violent storm by allowing the negativity to pass through it by bending with the wind. It absorbs the wrath of the devastating force. After the storm dissipates and leaves, the palm stands up straight to see another day of sunshine. It symbolizes all that’s good about the sun, beach, ocean, recreation and pleasure. As stress, anger, negativity, or disappointment builds, most people brace

themselves like an oak tree to battle the immediate adversity. Of course, there are no oak trees on the beach. An oak tree would easily have its branches broken and its trunk uprooted. This is why your first thought in times of stress is the palm tree. With this positive imagery, you will lower your breathing by taking several deep breaths and not negatively react or overreact to what’s in front of you. Be the palm tree.

™ Breathe Like a Baby Do you ever get nervous or anxious

before a big event, presentation or meeting? Do you ever get uptight just before a potential confrontation? If the answer is yes, you may need to breathe like a baby. Do babies get anxious about the future? Never! Babies close their eyes and breathe with their stomach. It’s not long before they’re fast asleep, whether they’re in a crowded restaurant or at a noisy family event. Here’s how to get calm. • Unhinge your jaw • Place either hand over your belly button • With each inhale, allow your stomach to move your hand After several deep breaths, you’ll feel your shoulders relax and a feeling of calmness will prevail. Before any potential stress situation, breathe like a baby.

Duck on the Pond When are you least comfortable?

It’s usually when you have a zillion things to do with the least amount of time. With deadlines pending and everyone wanting your time and energy, what should you do? Act like a duck, gracefully gliding its way across a pond. Yesterday I watched a duck on the pond behind my home. It appeared effortless as it moved through the water. It reached its destination with ease. And when it felt like it, it took wing and flew away. Isn’t it fascinating

watching a duck on a pond? In reality, a duck’s webbed feet are paddling at full speed. What if you could look and feel as calm, cool and collected as the duck while you paddle full speed, accomplishing all your tasks and goals within their deadlines? Here are 10 ways to be the duck on the pond: 1. Prepare exactly where you want to go. 2. Prepare daily, weekly and monthly tasks to be accomplished in order to reach your destination. 3. Envision each task in its completed state. 4. Focus only on what you want, as opposed to what you don’t want. 5. Maintain slow deep breathing under all circumstances, conditions and situations. Stay comfortable! 6. When obstacles arrive, keep your mind on where you want to go. 7. Prepare to adjust with a calm demeanor in case your pathway is blocked. Decisively change course, change speed, change strategy, temporarily abort the mission or stay the course. 8. Think solutions. This will be easier when you replace the word “problem” with the word “challenge.” 9. When reality and expectations don’t mesh, stay optimistic! 10. Enjoy the swim! Enjoy the pond! Now you’re armed with three proven, concrete tools and techniques for relaxation. Remember, your greatest gift is free will to think any thought and consequently act any way at any time under any circumstance, condition or situation. When life presents tough challenges, meet them head-on by being calm, cool and collected.

MY DAD’S 50TH ANNIVERSARY WITH HARLEY-DAVIDSON

DAD PAUL KEENEY

SON CHRIS KEENEY GRANDSON NOAH KEENEY

I know for a fact that I would have never known the H-D culture and riding H-D’s if it wasn’t for my pops. His grandson (my son) rides my Harley regularly and is saving for his own. Now that will be a picture to see… three generations of Keeney’s cruising down the road. Chris Keeney rode up to our office to tell us about his Dads story. I was in a meeting but when I over heard what he was saying before he left I asked him to hang on a minute because I wanted to talk to him. You see when someone takes the time to reach out to us about something important to them I always want to listen because it can be our next special story to tell in BTR Magazine. I only wish I could say I got to ride with my Dad and share those special times that Chris, his son and his Dad share together. This is what it’s all about people, generations of family that ride together and to me I know we had a special story and here it is. It all began a long time ago, 50 years to be exact. He rode his friend’s Harley-Davidson Hummer and that started his love affair with motorcycles and Harley-Davidsons. For $200, he bought and built his first H-D

chopper out of a box of parts. After one run in with a ditch and a broken collar bone later, he never looked back. I can’t even remember how many motorcycles he’s had throughout the 50 years but trust me there have been quite a few. My dad always seemed to stay on two wheels or none depending on if he got enough air jumping something. Even while he was in the Navy (22 years) and living overseas he owned some sort of motorcycle. I’m sure he’s taken a few years off my mom’s life with his shenanigans. Bless her heart she’s been there since the beginning and still rides regularly with him on the Road Glide. It’s taken a few years to realize that I too have the passion for riding Harley’s. Hanging with my folks takes on a whole new perspective when we’re cruising down the road on two wheels together. I think it’s a

combination of noise nostalgia and doing something in common. Well keeping true to style and passion my 67-year-old (soon to be 68) dad decided his 50th anniversary with Harley-Davidson he wanted a brand new black 2014 V-Rod Muscle and of course he got it. Mom wasn’t too happy, but I know deep down she knows he looks good on it and it is bad ass! I know for a fact that I would have never known the H-D culture and riding H-D’s if it wasn’t for my pops. His grandson (my son) rides my Harley regularly and is saving for his own. Now that will be a picture to see… Three generations of Keeney’s cruising down the road. NEVER FORGET OUR VETERANS WHO SERVE God, Country and the American Dream Recently I spent several weeks riding my motorcycle in West Virginia and Michigan. While traveling around the states I was impressed with the small towns and what rural America still holds close to her heart, the love for God, Country and the American dream. In almost every small West Virginia and Michigan rural area, town or farming community I found a war memorial erected honoring those who have served throughout the course of our history to protect the United States. In my humble personal opinion it appears those who live in large urban areas have lost the true meaning of what should be important to all of us, our freedoms and what the true cost of those freedoms really are, the thousands of names on war memorials across America. As I rode the back roads through the small towns and wide spots in the road I saw numerous American Flags proudly waving in the breeze. There were flags on mailboxes, signs supporting our troops in yards, banners across the front porches of farmhouses and a few hand painted American Flags on the front of barns. West Virginia’s show of support for not only the military but for America herself is amazing and shows throughout the entire state. I had a chance to stop and take a few photos while riding and I was happy to see how many areas had provided benches or seats situated in and around a war memorial so people could sit and contemplate what the real cost is for their freedom or to just sit and eat a leisurely lunch with a relative, friend or neighbor whose name may appear on the memorial. In larger urban areas there may be a memorial established somewhere in the city, however those living in the city may not even know where it is or what it stands for. It seems we have started to lose our history through not teaching it for whatever reason in school, which someday could be the downfall of our way of life. It is apparent we as an urbanized society have lost the ability to judge and teach what was considered to have been the mainstream teachings from the beginnings of this Republic we call America. We seem to be more concerned as to how the world sees us rather than how we see ourselves. We as a society should learn from our history otherwise we will tend to repeat our mistakes.

I feel we are being taught a new set of history lessons which may not have happened and/or did happen and some folks want to eliminate them from our

children’s minds and the annals of history altogether. The folks, who get their hands dirty working their farms, ranches or run local hardware stores or Mom and Pop grocery stores on a daily basis, seem to live closer to the American dream than their counterparts who reside in the urban areas of the country. Why is that? Is it because those who live in urban areas try to forget they may have been raised in the country or is it because we don’t really understand people who want to live in the rural areas of the country producing a product which the rest of us rely on daily, be it cattle, hogs, eggs or vegetables. Farmers are almost a dying breed due to the economic situation we find ourselves presently in. Family farms are being sold off or are being repocessed at an alarming rate. As I traveled through the various areas

Honor our Veterans everyday and especially on Veterans Day Tuesday November 11th

this summer I always received a friendly wave from those who I encountered along the way. That is not always the case with folks in the urban areas who seem preoccupied with their daily grind and always seem to be in a rush. As you ride throughout America take time to stop and talk with those who you might normally pass by. Let them know you as a motorcyclist and an American are concerned about them and the area in which they live. Most of the people I ride with are somehow connected to the military either past or present and that is always a good way to start a conversation, especially if you see an American Flag flowing in the breeze. If you have time and the inclination stop and sit for a few minutes at one of the many memorial parks in the smaller towns or rural areas you may pass through. As you sit and thank those whose names appear on the monument or memorial I assure you someone will walk up and start a conversation with you and thank you for taking the time to honor their warriors. In my personal estimation we as bikers or if you prefer motorcyclists are a breed set apart from the rest of society by the code of the open road, a little bit of gypsy and the need to be free. As I stated earlier a large majority of those who I ride with have been in or are currently in the military and they know what the meaning of ‘free’ really is, sacrifice, determination and in some cases the loss of a family, team member or friend. Even if you now reside in an urban area, remember where you came from, be it the dusty plains of the Midwest, the swamps of Florida, the mountains of the Appalachians or the forests of the Great Northwest, we are all one nation under God and we are his children and we should respect what He has given us to enjoy and protect. Maybe it’s time we settle down and get back to the basics, God, Family and Country. Maybe it’s time we as a nation get back to believing in the three basic documents which formed this great nation, The Declaration of Independence, The Constitution of the United States and most importantly, the Holy Bible. Those documents are what this Republic was founded on and are what has made US what we are today or should be, Free Americans. Remember “It’s not about the war, it’s about the warriors.” God bless America and those who serve in uniform. Terry Longpre BORNTORIDE.COM | BTR 67

had seen sitting in front of the place as I was riding by on the bagger. I mean, it looked pretty good and I suppose that the price was reasonable, but why did the proprietor try to bundle the deal with an “Occasional Chair”??? I didn’t need (and didn’t have room for) anything except the sofa. Besides that— “What the hell is an Occasional Chair?” I asked. For some reason, the owner of the business couldn’t come up with a good answer and suggested that it was something that only was used every now and then by people that didn’t desire to sit upon the floor, as was the custom in his country. I figured all this out pretty quickly and left with only the couch. I just couldn’t get the concept of the additional furniture that would be used only ‘occasionally.’ Besides, I’m no slave to fashion or décor so I left befuddled regarding the suggestion that I would need such a piece.

The occasional sheriff and other terrible stuff As a writer, I occasionally run into certain situations that absolutely prevent me from making a definitive decision regarding the piece of prose that I am working on. This often blocks me from making the best presentation of a column that I do for any particular entity. As a run of the mill poor redneck trailer trash biker, I often don’t see things ahead on the road. At certain times you may have a destination in mind for the things that you must accomplish. Sometimes everything goes smoothly and you go gather all the things required for the task and simply return home or to the job site. On other occasions the regular daily process of obtaining that particular laundry list of items may be cut short due to a vendor’s lack of stock or perhaps when other unforeseen obstacles rear their ugly heads. I have a myriad of examples but recently a few come to mind. I may have discussed in the past the lack of availability of walls for sale at Wal-Mart. I also indicated that there were no steins on sale at Stein-Mart. Everyone already knows that you can’t buy a home at Home Depot or an office at Office Depot so I refuse to continue my simplistic diatribe regarding misleading corporate names. I’m not a real big fan of major corporations anyhow so I can’t try to suggest a better title for those outlets. Either way, we all must obtain the things needed to accomplish the task at hand so when you know the necessity and have the wherewithal to get the items required, you simply venture out and acquire the goods. Once I needed to get a couch for the trailer. Guests who had the nuts to visit the trailer park (this includes Mike and Spyke) were getting tired of sitting on the old greasy milk crates that I use for working on motorcycles and other ‘high altitude’ work, so I took my old truck and went to a used furniture store to attempt to make a swimmingly wonderful deal on a slightly used sofa that I Book the Craven Moorehead Blues Band, Call 888-795-5779

The ‘Occasional Sheriff’ on the other hand is something that I am somewhat familiar with. I remember a time when I acted as the ‘designated dummy’ that was obligated me to go fetch some brew for a party. I went to a liquor store that had a pretty good deal on But Light and I was able to load six 18 packs on the bagger. Yeah, I admit that it looked kinda funny, but I had used a bunch of bungee cords and a short piece of rope to load the brew on the rear seat and luggage rack. On a dark back road a good distance from town, I was simply cruising along at the obligatory 10 miles over the speed limit when I was spied by the ‘occasional sheriff.’ Usually, no law enforcement personnel ever hang out around this area due to the lack of ‘business’ to be done in this vicinity. But I suppose that this wasn’t my lucky day. I was surprised when I saw the blue lights come on, largely because I wasn’t going all that fast and I never worried about DUI or anything else because I had only consumed a couple of beers before I went on the run. But as usual the occasional sheriff had that text-book list of demands. “Driver License, Insurance, Immigration Card and keep yer hands where I can see ‘em”… I’m just sitting there on the bike on the side of the road while he checks all my credentials and when comes back he had some interesting questions: “Do you know why I stopped you?” To which I responded “Uhhh, I guess cause you wanted to check out my really cool bike” (A moment of silence) “Boy, you gonna drink all this beer by yerself?” Well, probably not a good answer but I quipped “Damn, I hope so!” (A longer moment of silence) After what felt like an hour, he handed me back my license and said “I know you ain’t right but have a safe night, and don’t try to drink all that friggin beer by yourself!” I said thanks and “remember an 18 pack is only a good start!” I haven’t seen any other occasional sheriffs in that area again, but I realized that everyone should keep their eyes open! (Including myself) Now that the terrors of Halloween are over, we must prepare ourselves for the most horrifying holiday of all which is commonly called Thanksgiving. This particular celebration is always loaded with family and friends who really don’t want to do anything other than fight. I have written before about the horrors of this special day, and the haunts of Halloween pale in comparison to the zombies, ghosts and miscreants that will try to celebrate you making them dinner—and then destroy your life as you know it, simply because they love you. (Allegedly) Try to make the best of it, and until next month—“Speed Safely!” BORNTORIDE.COM | BTR 69

BIKER MOVIE REVIEW Confusion and chaos pretty much sums up this movie. It is the modern day version of all the biker exploitation “B” movies ever made. Curiously, Larry Bishop (as Pistolero) appeared in a variety of films including The Savage Seven, Mad Dog Time and Kill Bill to name a few. His collaboration with Quentin Tarantino in this most recent effort, would lead one to believe that “Hell Ride” is a major cinematic production destined for the A list. Sadly, it falls short of that mark. The story revolves around Pistolero and his gang “the Victors.” The main characters are himself, the Gent and Comanche who set out to avenge the death of his ol lady Cherokee Kisum. Cherokee it seems, was murdered by the 666er’s, a rival gang. But wait, let’s back up! This is exactly what makes the flick so confusing. … We flash back and forth from 35 years back to 35 years forward. It seems that Bishop as the writer director and star is the only one that understands what is going on at any given time. I was lost after viewing it twice, but again I digress. The film is soaked with girls, drugs and murder. I like all those facets in a biker exploitation film but the chaotic pace leaves one wondering where the plot is. It seems the Victors MC have an underlying code of deceit and distrust. As the movie rolls along, several of the members of gang are killed by the Gent and other Victors leaving only Pistolero, the Gent and Comanche in the gang. Ahhh, but there is another member hiding in the desert! Eddie Zero played by Dennis Hopper appears as a (possibly retired) member of the gang. How they were able to get Hopper to appear in this mess was a mystery in itself, and I was surprised, and entertained for a moment until I saw David Carradine playing rival gang member “The Duce.” Evidently the Duce and Pistolero had some under-thetable dealings and this conflict led to the ongoing battle between the two clubs. BTR 70 | BORNTORIDE.COM

The 666er’s use arrows and darts to carry out their hits while the Victors use the more conventional revolvers, available at Wal-Mart. The Victors trademark murders– you will see a few of these involve the tying of one to a chair, the cutting of the throat, and the soaking of the subject in gasoline, which is then ignited by the tossing of a Zippo lighter, also available at Wal-Mart. Somewhere in my recall, it seems to me that this ritual was borrowed from the 666er’s when they did in Cherokee Kisum. In the end, the Victors cut off the Duce’s head, and Eddie Zero delivers it to the 666er’s hangout in a nice wicker basket (see Wal-Mart above). He departs and rides off down the road until his motor quits for some reason. He gets off his vintage ride to repair it, and sees the 666er’s pull up behind him. The leader of the 666er’s, (played by Vinnie Jones) shoots him in the

back with a dart fired from an air powered device that looks like a Shark Gun. He collapses on the highway. Much to the 666er’s surprise the Victors pull up behind them and the Gent kills all of them, but only wounds Jones who falls to the pavement. Pistolero in a strange twist of role, shoots Jones with a small crossbow, then reloads and fires a dart into Jones’ gas tank. As the fuel surrounds Jones, who is bleeding cussing and etc, one of the Victors cuts his throat, and Pistolero tosses the classic Zippo into the pool of gas. In the next frame, Hopper gets up off the pavement, and removes his armor laden jacket – arrow still intact- and hands it to his girl who gives him a similar jacket. They depart the scene, and the three meet in the desert where the 666er’s had previously buried some sort of lockbox containing some sort of (something). … There are three keys that have 666 stamped into them. There is a short argument, and Comanche digs up the lock box and the others give him the three keys. What’s in that thing you ask? You will never know, because the shot shows only Comanche’s face from the inside as he opens the box. I think it was empty, but what do I know? The trio then fire up their motors and ride off in three different directions as the credits roll. If you are a fan of naked ladies, cool classic motorcycles, and blood and guts, this film is for you! However if you were expecting a plot, a story line, or a coherent slide-show of pleasant desert scenes you aren’t gonna be too happy. Tarantino once told Bishop “It is your destiny to write, direct and star in a movie.” Sometimes destiny is not all it’s cracked up to be! I would reluctantly give this film 2 out of 5 stars, because there were 2 REAL stars exploited in this mess. It is rated R for ridiculous, and runs approximately 86 minutes. In my opinion it should be 86’ed altogether.

IS AMERICA STILL THE LAND OF THE FREE? RoadBlock 1%er

After 30 years in prison, I expected a changed world when I was finally allowed to go home. There were many technology changes like cell phones and personal computers, and “convenience” changes, like drive-thru restaurants and self-service gas stations. Those, I could understand and appreciate. And the modern motorcycles! What an experience that was to ride for the first time in 30 years. However, the most overwhelming change I encountered wasn’t good: I saw the destructive direction our country has taken in those three decades, all at the hands of the U.S. government. Over the past 30+ years, it has quickly morphed into the very thing this country’s citizens have fought against and died for over the last 200 years, both here and overseas. America is no longer a nation of “We the People” protected by the Constitution and Bill of Rights. America is now what the government and politicians so proudly refer to as “A Nation of Laws.” They are determined to make the Constitutional rights and protections this country was founded on a thing of the past. WHAT HAPPENED: The U.S. government’s power-mongers chose to follow the path of the Soviet Union, China, Germany and other dictatorial governments in the past. Those countries began their destructive rule by declaring segments of its populations to be undesirables who didn’t deserve the same rights as everyone else (consider the harassment of today’s motorcycle riders). Those governments then began a propaganda blitz to demonize, discredit and dehumanize the selected groups. Once this was done, they persuaded other citizens to spy on the targeted

BTR 72 | BORNTORIDE.COM

groups and report everything to government agencies. HOW DID THIS HAPPEN in the US: Our government and politicians have slowly taken away our constitutional rights and individual protections under the guise of protecting American citizens from harm. The government claims that in order to protect us, we must allow them to spy on us, and track and collect all of our private phone and internet conversations. Furthermore, our neighbors, doctors, and teachers are being pressured to report personal information about our families to these agencies. The sickest thing they have done so far is to adopt one of Hitler’s favorite programs and recruit American children to spy on and report on their own parents. Playing on our fears, particularly from the 9/11 tragedy onward, the government has pretended to benevolently protect us from harm. Instead, what they have accomplished is gaining almost total power and control over our lives. THEIR ATTITUDE ABOUT OUR RIGHT TO PRIVACY: To demonstrate how successful the government’s plan is, I’ll relate a conversation I recently had with a military officer working for Homeland Security. Bear in mind this man swore an oath to protect and defend the Constitution against all enemies both foreign and domestic. I asked him if he thought the government’s invasive collection and storage of everyone’s personal phone and internet conversations crossed the line. He said: “Why should people worry about it if they aren’t doing anything wrong?” Does anyone realistically believe the government will not manipulate or abuse the harvested information? Most of us know better.

WHAT CAN BE DONE ABOUT IT? Who or what will protect us from the government power-abusers and their unconstitutional practices? After the signing of the “Declaration of Independence,” no legal constraints were placed on the new U.S. government, which promptly got out of control. (Policing malicious politicians has always been a problem for America’s citizens.) In response, on September 17, 1787, our forefathers solved that problem. In their wisdom, they gave American citizens the Constitution and Bill of Rights. The Constitution and Bill of Rights were designed to keep an abusive government in check. But unlike criminal law, which is prosecuted by the government, enforcing constitutional law falls squarely on the citizens, who must become the prosecutors. I don’t advocate armed rebellion against the government. I believe constitutional law will trump the abusive laws set out by boughtand-paid politicians. Those same arrogant politicians don’t want you to know that laws are a two-edged sword that can cut both ways, and they have no immunity when it’s prosecuted properly. The fact that most people don’t understand how constitutional law works has made it possible for a select group of tyrants to escalate their misuse of power to an intolerable level. The government demands that the American citizens follow their law. It is time for the citizens to demand their government also follow constitutional law. Spyke & Mike

It’s Thanksgiving and Mike is at it Again

Check this out my BTR friends. After Mike’s mini electrocution at the Moorehead compound last month, he is slowly recovering to his abnormal self. It’s been three trips to the dentist to correct the fillings that melted, four trips to physical therapy to get some feeling back in his leg and butt cheek, and the ophthalmologist says his eye twitching will go away in years to come… Me, I’m glad this pic isn’t the before and after shot had I not fallen off the scooter seconds prior to Mike’s zapping. Instead, this poor dude reminds me of why I hide in the closet weeks preceding Thanksgiving. You know, that bad time of year for us feathered fowl. People are either hunting us from the sky, looking for the biggest one to serve up on the holidays, or worse yet, doing that ‘turducken’ thing. How brutal can you humans be, killing three of us for one meal! Every year Mike drags me out of my isolation only to ask me some ridiculous questions about Turkey Day. What is he thinking? Do I look like a flying encyclopedia Britannica? Am I Confucius of the avian world? Am I a magical feathered eight ball? This year he must have been really bored. I try to resist, but fighting big birdbrain is futile when he’s got his mind set on doing something, even if it’s wrong. I hit my perch, he hits the chaise lounge with a cold one

in hand, and begins firing questions at me. “OK Spyke, tell us O’ feathered one, why do we have a Thanksgiving holiday in the first place?” I answer, ‘So all you humans know when to start shopping for Christmas.’ Mike rolls his eyes and mumbles, “Oh brother, I see where this is going, but I must continue. Well then Spyke, tell me what comes at the end of Thanksgiving?” I proclaim, ‘that’s obvious, the letter G!’ Mike asks, “So Spyke, who is NOT hungry at Thanksgiving?” I squawk, ‘my cousin the turkey of course, he’s already stuffed!’ Mike sighs and says, “And you too, you’re full of bulls**t! Now tell me, how many cooks does it take to stuff a turkey?” I lean towards him and squawk, ‘Two if they’re midgets but only one if he’s your size. You just have to squeeze him in a little harder.’ Mike babbles on, “Well then Spyke, why was the little turkey screaming at the big turkey?” I cackle, ‘hHe was telling him to peck on someone his own size.’ Mike comes back, “Why, was he afraid to get the stuffing knocked out of him?” I quack back, ‘No dummy! He didn’t want to be involved in any fowl play.’ Mike slaps himself on the forehead and rants, “OK Spyke, why did they let the turkey join the band but not the pig?” I squawk, ‘well he’s got the drumsticks! Why not?’

Mike shoots back, “So what happens when you cross an octopus with a turkey?” I reply, ‘You get a bunch of drumsticks, enough for a high school marching band!’ “OK Spyke, so then, why are there no turkeys in the church band?” I tell him, ‘The same reason they don’t let you in church on Sunday, because they all use fowl language!’ Mike chuckles, “Well hell Spyke! You got me there! Now you pick at your feathers all the time. What side of the bird has the most feathers and how do you keep them so clean?” I look him in the eye and squawk, ‘The outside and I use a feather duster, of course!’ Mike rolls his eyes and blurts out “Spyke, I’ve been pondering the dinner itself and I’ve got just a few more questions. What do you get after eating way too much turkey, dressing, and mashed potatoes?” I answer, ‘very little dessert!’ “Then tell me Spyke, what do you get when you cross a turkey with a baked fruit dessert?” I cackle, ‘peach gobbler!’ He cries out, “OK then, what is the best thing to stick in pumpkin pie?” I tell him, ‘my beak!’ Shaking his head back and forth, “One last question for you, my bird brain buddy, tell me why you are so thankful for Thanksgiving?” I raise my wings up and squawk loudly, ‘I’m thankful that I DON’T look and act like a turkey, and you better be thankful too!’ Mike sits up, lays the empty beverage can on the table and runs off at the mouth, “Spyke, you’ve got to stay out of the closet during this time of year. It’s great riding weather and your itty bitty bird brain is turning into gravy!” I screech, ‘You’re right Mike! Let’s make like a turkey in the band and beat it!’ With that said, he picks me up and we head out to the garage. Mike places me behind the windscreen, jumps on the Fat Bird, and we roll on out. Getting my wings in the wind and the Fat Bird’s wheels down the road. SPYKE Send your animal pictures to info@borntoride. com

Psalm 119:105

Recently I had the opportunity to visit J&P Cycles, and I have to tell you it always makes my heart beat a little faster when I get to stand in a place that screams with possibilities! All that chrome, specialty parts, luggage, custom style seats, pipes and on and on, it sets the imagination free! For this particular visit, I actually had a focus on what I was looking for, more lights. The bike already has a headlight with a modulator,

two spotlights, a special flashing brake light, as well as lights on the back, side, and bottom of the tour pack. My personal philosophy is one can never have too many lights on a bike, to both see and be seen by others. Got some great assistance from one of the J&P employees, and he discussed the difference between fork mounted lights or using powerful LED lights mounted in the stock spotlight housings. He even lit up the lights on a display model and wow it was blinding. The clincher was when he pointed out how much further away he could see deer on the side of the road after dark, and easily and safely roll past them. It is so important to be able to clearly see what lies before us, and to be able to take safe, evasive maneuvers. Better yet, those bright LED lights would not only help me be more aware of possible obstacles in the dark, they would help others see me better as I enjoy time in the wind. I decided to grab a set, and they were even on sale! You know, there is another way that light is important, and keeps us safe. In Psalm 119:105 the Bible teaches us that, “Your Word is a

lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” Like brighter illumination better showing me the way as I ride, there is a promise that the Word mentioned in the Bible will show me the way as I travel through life. The Word, of God, while serving as a lamp to my feet helps me prevent stumbling because of potholes in the dark. By being a light to my path, my way is illuminated so I can have a safe journey as I travel through life. I’ve often heard of the Bible being God’s love letter to man, an instruction manual to guide us through the ups and downs of life. That’s a real light to show us the way to successfully navigate life and overcome any challenges we may face. Isn’t it great to know that He loves us so much that He has provided us with such a ride plan for life? We just have to seek His direction, in His Word, and our paths will be clearly, and safely revealed. As our path is made clear, our ride takes on a freedom like we’ve never had before!
