Provides funding for Suncoast Charities and economic

I love this time of year! We are surrounded by holiday decorations, seasonal music, and the outpouring of love for one another. There are many people I know who are constantly thinking of others throughout the year – and I had the pleasure of meeting one of them to talk about Thunder By The Bay! Lucy Nicandri, as many of you know, is a wonderful example of a person who is constantly doing for others. Lucy, and her ambitious and dedicated group of volunteers, continually pulls together the largest biker event held on the west coast of Florida every January! We spent a nice evening together catching up on our lives and more importantly, the 17th year of Thunder By The Bay and what’s new for this event in January. “This year Suncoast Charities Board Member, Mike Welch, and I decided to change things up a bit. Starting Thursday, January 8, there will be a Sporting Clay Tournament at Knight’s Trail Range. We felt it was important to keep Thunder By The Bay fresh and continue as a 4-day festival. Mike and I have both participated in other sporting clay tournaments and agreed it would be a nice addition to the festival. We expect to sell out, so it’s important to tell folks that they need to register now by visiting thunderbythebay.org. A special thanks to our volunteer Robby Sinclair for chairing this new event.” Friday night is always a fun night for Thunder By The Bay! The “Born To Be Wild” Kickoff Party will be held this year at The Francis Ballroom at Louie’s Modern and is chaired by Cina Welch. The evening will feature an open bar, tasting stations featuring various Jack Daniel's whiskeys, Jägermeister, Deep Eddy vodkas, Pilar rum, select wines from Premier Beverage, craft beers courtesy of Gold Coast Eagle Distributing, and a cigar tasting station. Delicious food stations will be paired with these tasting stations. Guests can also enjoy and a chance to bid on "one of a kind" silent auction items. On-air hosts David Jones and BTR 12 | BORNTORIDE.COM

Christina Crane from 107.9FM WSRZ will be there to host the event and guests can enjoy live music by John Rinell. Tickets are $100 per person. This is an important fundraising event for Suncoast Charities during the festival. “The minute we made this change I thought to myself that there were going to be a lot of bikers coming in from out of town early that weekend, so we need to provide them some options. In an effort to attract motorcyclists and also the general public, I decided to try and create a new event that would involve food trucks. This past summer I went to a food truck festival in upstate New York! It was such a good time! I had the BEST macaroni and cheese ever – eight flavors to pick from! I came up with the idea of a Food Truck Round-Up at the Sarasota County Fairgrounds. Motorcycles will have special parking inside the fairgrounds under the lights, and can enjoy live music by Shotgun Justice, beer & wine, and a food truck food court. On-air hosts Maverick and Lulu from 106.5FM WCTQ will be on hand to host the event. There is a gate donation of $5 for adults, kids 12 and under are free!” Saturday starts the HUGE downtown festival. This is free and open to the public as well. Enthusiastically, Lucy said, “This year we are doing an ’80s theme! The music acts are going to let you get your ’80s groove on!” Billy Rice, the stage manager and entertainment chair spent a few minutes with me talking about this year’s event. Billy is in charge of all the entertainment coming into Thunder By The Bay. For most of us, we already know Billy Rice as an amazing entertainer and musician – The Billy Rice Band is one of Florida’s favorite classic rock bands – and one of my personal favorites! “Five years ago Lucy Nicandri and Mike Welch came to me asking me to help them with the entertainment side of the festival. As an entertainer, I knew what was needed to make this large of an event successful. So, my first year as a volunteer at Thunder, it was very successful. From there, I kept

building the talent of bands that I personally know of and have seen play.” Billy doesn’t bring just “any” band on board. He needs to know them, listen to them, and determine if they are a good fit for Thunder. Billy added, “We pick a vein of entertainment of what we’re going to have. This year we decided to change things around and pulled the theme of ’80s hair bands. We booked Great White as our headliner for Sunday. Then we build the show around that persona of people who play music from that era. You have to have a show for an audience that wants to see new entertainment. We have bands from Ft. Lauderdale, Tampa, and Orlando – traveling bands that play that era of music.” Saturday evening Bobby Friss will be rocking the downtown venue. Speaking of Saturday, the downtown festival is free and open to the public. Starting at 11:00 a.m. and ending at 11:00 p.m., vendors, demos, food, and music will make this day exciting and fun for everyone in the family! In addition to the downtown festivities, Dealer Day at Rossiter’s Harley-Davidson and Manatee River Harley-Davidson commences at 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Lucy mentioned, “Both dealerships are going to have specials on all day long including giveaways. So be sure to stop there before heading downtown.” Rossiter’s Harley-Davidson and Manatee River Harley-Davidson NEVER disappoint. Saturday night is another big night for the lighted bike fans out there. “We have our popular “Light Up The Night” bike show. This will be located on South Palm Avenue in downtown Sarasota. If you have a special bike that is all decked out in lights, then you need to enter it in this contest. This event is one of the most popular events of the weekend! Sunday is another popular event – the Finz Finds "Cruise for Cash" Charity Ride offering $4,000 in cash prizes. “The ride will be going to some of the area non-profits that Suncoast Charities supports,” said Lucy. “We’ve always incorporated one or two of

impact to Sarasota and the surrounding communities. the non-profits into our ride every year. The starting point this year is at one of our Title Sponsor's location, Sarasota Ford. If you haven’t been there yet, they have completed a multi-million renovation on the dealership. They have a massage chair room, movie theatre, café, waterfalls, etc. They will have refreshments for the folks registering at the dealership between 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. I also want to mention for those who don’t want to go on the ride, I would encourage them to stop by the dealership to check it out and consider making a donation to the charity.” At the end of the ride, there will be VIP parking for all ride participants along the bayfront by O'Leary's Tiki Bar. Steve Finzelber is the owner of Finz Finds Rides. Steve is the one that spends endless hours mapping out the perfect ride for this festival. I had the pleasure of speaking with him about his role at Thunder By The Bay. “I’ve been organizing the "Cruise for Cash" for several years now. This time, we are going through the Pinecraft Amish-Mennonite community, and other scenic areas including the three non-profit agencies that are supported by Suncoast Charities. The ride is just under two hours long and winners will be announced that afternoon downtown. Last year we had 750 riders because of special guest Paul Teutul Sr. of OCC. This year it’s a ride at your own pace. Once you register, you can come and go as you like.” Steve does an amazing job of organizing and planning out the Ride for Cash. Also on Sunday, at 9:00 a.m., is the popular Blessing of the Bikes. Lucy was sure to tell me about Mike Davis and the CMA Faith Riders #594. “The CMA does a great job for us every year! The Bike Blessing will be held at Sarasota Ford prior to the start of the "Cruise for Cash.” Last year, Thunder By The Bay had a tribute to the veterans. This year, Lucy and her team will be keeping up with this yearly, on-going mission. “Susan, when you look at the demographics of folks who attend Thunder, I would say over 50% are veterans or

active-duty military. As the organizer for this event, the respect for those who serve (or have served) our country should never be forgotten. As a daughter of a veteran who earned a purple heart in WWII, this is important to me, and I know it’s important to a lot of other people as well. As long as Mike Welch and I are involved with this event, we want to continue honoring our veterans, active duty military, and their families. Once again this year, many of our vendors are offering services for veterans and their families.” Thunder By The Bay does so much more than provide a fun, exciting weekend for bikers and non-bikers alike. It provides much needed funding for Suncoast Charities AND provides a huge economic impact to Sarasota and the surrounding communities. Lucy provided me with some interesting numbers that you may find interesting as well. “I checked on numbers and last year the economic impact from Thunder was $7.4 Million (8.7% increase from the year before) and generated 5,400 room nights. Total expenditures of out-of-county attendees and participants were over $4 million.” Lucy is a very humble and hard-working person. She is very quick to give credit where credit is due to her team of volunteers. “In addition to Steve Finzelber and Billy Rice, I am so blessed to have Mike Davis and the CMA Faith Riders #594. The CMA Faith Riders have coordinated parking during the festival for many years now and they open the “Cruise for Cash” with the popular Blessing of the Bikes. Scott Kessler and Bob Poneleit are the Bike Show Co-Chairs. Both have coordinated the “Light up the Night” Bike show and Sunday bike show for many years now. Scott handles the H-D classes and Bob all the import classes. Tommy Houser is the festival vendor setup/ cleanup guy. He has the job nobody wants. He is the first to show up and the last one to leave.” “Kenny Castro assists me as my downtown liaison. He supports me each year

Vendor information for Thunder By The Bay 2015 go to ThunderByTheBay.org

with collecting signatures from all downtown businesses so that the streets can be closed for the festival.” Not an easy task as 65% of all the downtown businesses within the event area must sign off to close the streets. Maureen Szakacs is the Fiscal Chair. “For many years now, Maureen and her team have been responsible for managing and handling all the financial responsibilities that weekend. In addition to all of these fine volunteers, we are blessed to have some very generous sponsors such as Matt Buchanan at Sarasota Ford, Lori Sinclair, and Rick Rossiter at Rossiter’s and Manatee Harley-Davidson, and Craig Johnson at FCCI Insurance Group. I have a dedicated Board of Directors and a very hard working office assistant, Brittany Parker. Thanks to them, our sponsors, volunteers, and especially the hard work and support from Board Member Mike Welch, this annual festival has continued to grow and be successful for the charity.” Thunder By The Bay is all about supporting The Suncoast Charities. Their motto is, "Serving children, teens, and adults with special needs since 1985.” Suncoast Charities for Children is a 501(c)3 that provides funding support to Suncoast Foundation for Handicapped Children, Inc., which over the years has constructed area facilities valued at over $14 million dollars. These facilities are located in North Port, Venice, and Sarasota and last year provided services to approximately 8,000 special needs children, teens, adults and their families. Net proceeds raised from special events, such as Thunder By The Bay, help maintain some of these aging facilities and support special project requests. All of us at Born To Ride look forward to seeing you at Thunder By The Bay! See you soon! CRUISE FOR CASH RIDE

Sarasota Ford is a presenting sponsor for this year’s festival so when registering, you can check out their newly remodeled showroom with a cafe, movie theater, and massage chair room. What a great place to

start the ride! Your ride will take you into Sarasota’s Amish Pinecraft neighborhood, past the celery fields on Palmer Blvd, and through Nathan Benderson Park. Pinecraft is a neighborhood community of approximately 3,000 Amish and Mennonite families. It is bustling with bicycles in the winter time, when Amish and Mennonites migrate down from up North. The celery fields are known for great bird watching and nature trails. Nathan Benderson Park is home to the newly developed world-class rowing facility & aquatic sports center, with great water views and bicycle paths. This is also where Sarasota’s own daredevil Nik Wallenda practices for his wire walks. Along the way you will have three stops; The Florida Center

for Early Childhood, Community Haven for Adults and Children with Disabilities, and Children First. All of these agencies receive support from Suncoast Charities for Children. Great agencies doing wonderful work in our community. As you return to downtown Sarasota, you will be able to park in the V.I.P. bike area at O’Learys Tiki Bar and Grill, or on Main St at the festival. Your final draw and check in will be at the Finz Finds tent, downtown near Main St. and Palm Ave. The last bike in will be at 1:30 PM, and winners will be announced on stage at approximately 2:45 PM. I hope you enjoy Sarasota as much as I enjoy calling it my home. Steve Finz

“Game Over Cycles revealed a motorcycle created on devotion to the traditions of the

BORNTORIDE.COM | BTR 23

On September 27, at the London International Tattoo Convention 2014 – the most prestigious body adornment convention in the world – a unique creation in the motorcycle world was unveiled. Polish custom bike manufacturer Game Over Cycles revealed a motorcycle created in devotion to the traditions of the modern motorcycle industry and the human culture of the artistic world of tattoos. Built in collaboration with German company Cheyenne Professional Tattoo Equipment and Dutch Zodiac Performance Products for Harley-Davidson, the bike is both a tribute to motorcycle engineering and a work of art. The Cheyenne Bike, branded The Recidivist, is a bike inspired by the art of permanent body adornment. Motorbikes are commonly adorned with tattoo motifs using an aerograph; however, the uniqueness of Cheyenne Bike The Recidivist lies in the fact that

the bike’s entire construction is covered in tattooed skin branded directly onto the bike’s tires, tanks, seat, rear fender, lamp and many other smaller elements. Light colored cow hide leather, similar to the color of human skin, is engineered onto the bike. Two tattoo artists from Polish tattoo studios Individuum and Steel Will Tattoo-Factory applied traditional works of tattoo art onto the bike using the tools of world-famous brand Cheyenne Professional Tattoo Equipment. The worlds of motorbikes and tattoos have long been kindred spirits. The theme of the Cheyenne Bike relates to this traditional relationship. In the USA, bikers used to tattoo for personal reasons –to express their character and lifestyle, as well as their social attitude. In post-war era America, many motorcyclists often led a life on the edge of law, but in those difficult times they were also very active in helping people from their

local communities. The Cheyenne Bike as an artistic vision references those traditions and through its construction and decorations presents a story of a man with strong character – a person, who values individuality, personal expression and sense of freedom. Stanislaw Myszkowski, GOC founder and originator of the project, explains the evolution of the project: “The idea of creating a motorcycle covered with real tattoos came to me 10 years ago. I have tattoos and I love motorcycles, and I consider them both as a way to express my own feelings or character. In this project we wanted to create a motorcycle that would be a combination of the automotive world with the world of tattoos and express their respective characteristics, not only in the construction but also in aesthetics. on the most traditional motorcycle brand in the world, the Harley-Davidson. On the other, we integrated the mechanisms of tattoo machines to become integral and fully functional elements of the motorcycle’s construction.” Motorcycle’s construction Bikers often tattooed using self-made machines and in reference to this, the bike’s front suspension has the look of a traditional coil tattoo machine. ments of bike’s construction, and the mechanisms of these elements operate in the same way as they do in the original tattoo machines. For example, the exhaust pipe looks exactly like a Cheyenne brand tattoo machine, including the tattooing needles, which when you start the bike move exactly as they do when the tattoo machine applies ink under skin. Further more, the machine’s design is based on a number of technical solutions drawing from the turbulent lifestyles of postwar bikers. The lever starting the bike has a shape of a bomb detonator lever. The

rear light indicators look like brass knuckle-dusters. Front wheel caliper brakes have the appearance of handcuffs, while front clutch and brake handles are formed in the shape of “butterfly” knives. Additionally, in reference to bikers’ at times fractured relationship with the law, the break pump lever is shaped in the form of a section sign. The bike represents the old school style of bike building: front clutch and brake handles are made in the reverse form and construction includes the infamous “suicide shifter” – a mechanism in which the rider needs to remove one hand to change gears. Construction of the Cheyenne Bike The Re-

cidivist took five months. The bike is based on the Harley-Davidson Softail model, but from the original machine only the engine (a Twin Cam 96”) and part of frame are left. All other construction elements and mechanisms are original solutions created by constructors of Game Over Cycles. Elements made by the GOC include: - frame made of C-bars (modified from HD Softail the frame) - rear swingarm made of C-bars - front suspension with shock absorbers - steering wheel with shift paddles and handles - brake pump

- foot control - rear wing - fuel tank - seat with mounting - engine covers along with engine barrels - air filter - front and rear lamp Tattoos Tattoos covering the bike were done by two Polish tattoo artists, Thomas Lech from Individuum Tattoo studio and Christopher Królak from Steel Will Tattoo Factory. The tattoos’ content relate to motifs decorating bodies of people inspired by and rooted in motorcycle communities. By creating both fictional

characters, as well references to real people and events, all of the visual motifs adorning the motorcycle tell the story of a man with a turbulent life. On the construction one can find tattooed arrest warrants, guns, cigar, shattered bottle of vodka, knives, razors, scenes from the times of prohibition. None of the tattoos done in a particular place is random and was thought out right from the beginning. Starting from a single element on the lamp, where deliberately a moth was tattooed as it is always attracted to light, to complex sequences of patterns forming a larger story. For example, one of these tales can be seen on the motorcycle’s front

“I have tattoos and I love motorcycles, I consider them as a way to express my own character.”

perpetrator, putting him behind bars, a visit from a loved one, attempt of a escape from prison and so on. Image coloring is maintained in the style of retro tattoos. The only clear motive of color are card elements on wheels. They are designed to separate the individual patterns and elements of story, so that they are more readable. The individual stories are also distinguished by floral arrangements tattooed in between them. The tattoos are applied even on the parts which aren’t visible at the first sight – elements inside or at the bottom of motorcycle’s components, such as internal sides of cutin-half fuel tank. The work time for tattoos to be completed took 250 hours. Game Over Cycles Game Over Cycles is a Polish custom motorcycles manufacturer formed in 2012. The Showmen’s Story The International Independent Showmen’s Association

has been an integral part of the Gibsonton/ Riverview area for almost 50 years. This area of Florida has been the permanent and winter home to many Carnival Showmen and Circus performers. The Club and Club grounds were established to provide a place where everyone involved in the outdoor amusement industry could come together to share stories of the past seasons, to make arrangements for the upcoming seasons or to just have a good time. The members who founded the I.I.S.A raised all of the monies needed to procure the property as well as build and erect all of its buildings that we have today. That process of being totally self-funded continues today as we continue to add to and maintain all of our properties. From its conception the club and its members have always been very community minded. Seeing a need to help some of the financially less fortunate local citizens primarily not show people, the club established its annual Christmas basket drive. Members of the Club formed a committee to ensure that children and their families were provided with boxes of wrapped gifts and baskets of food for several holiday meals. Clothing drives were also added from time to time; the clothes, shoes, and household items were dispersed through the local elementary school here in town. To this day, members at the I.I.S.A. still follow the practice of charitable assistance to our less fortunate neighbors. A massive special needs Children’s Christmas party was established very early on,

when several of our members thought to reach out to the Hillsborough County School system. We began hosting this wonderful party for children with special needs—complete with singing, dancing, dj’s, and a circus act or two. This year we had over 300 kids, each had a chance to talk with Santa and Mrs. Clause and receive a huge bag full of gifts. The I.I.S.A. also hosts the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Senior Citizen’s Banquet, many of whom are driven to and from their homes by club members so they can attend. The Showmen’s club annual Circus has long been a major community event at the club grounds for over 30 years with an all-volunteer workforce from the club along with all of the wonderful circus performers from all over Florida who donate their time and special talents to this special show. A portion of the money goes to some of the smaller, local charities in the South County. One of our newest and grandest projects was the completion of the Showmen’s Museum. This large free standing building is full of historical artifacts, photos and large advertising banners depicting the evolution of the outdoor amusement industry. Visit our museum and walk through the history of days gone by. Our club is also home to one of Florida’s largest Shrine organizations. The Showmen’s Shrine club and is the only Shrine club anywhere that is allowed to have a worldwide membership. The Showmen’s Shrine club membership is not limited to just showmen, and with over 400 members, they continue to raise and provide funds for

the Shriners hospitals along with several other charitable causes. Over the last few years our club float has been included in the world famous Gasparilla Pirates Parade where we have been honored with many first place and top awards. We now float in many other parades as well and are always a trophy winner for our ever-changing, over the top float creations. A newer group at the Showmen’s Club is our Relay For Life Team. Team Showmen has, in a very short time, become one of the largest fundraising groups in the fight to wipe out cancer. The year round dedication of this team is relentless and will not cease until the battle has been won. We here at the Showmen’s club have quietly been giving back to our community for many years. We hope that this small insight into who we really are will help you understand the pride we have in calling Gibsonton our home and playground. It is with great pride that we invite you to our annual Bikefest this year. Over the years the Showmen’s Bikefest has become a major Florida event. One which we will continue to improve upon to ensure that you have a great time. The Showmen’s Bikefest along with the Shriners Poker Run welcomes bikers from all over the southern United States. There is plenty of parking and room to accommodate those of you who would like to travel in your R.V. as well. We welcome you all to enjoy our facilities and club grounds. Don’t miss the Blessing of the Bikes with CMA 9:00am at Sarasota Ford

The story of the birth of the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches proves miracles do happen. It tells how an impossible dream grew into one of the finest delinquency prevention programs in the nation.

Early History In 1955, two veteran Florida Sheriffs took a trip to Texas—a trip that would forever change the lives of thousands of Florida’s trouble, abused, and neglected youngsters. Several years ago, Hillsborough County Sheriff Ed Blackburn, Jr. related the following details about that memorable trip. He and Marion County Sheriff Don McLeod made the journey to retrieve a pair of armed robbery suspects. “It was in June of 1955 that Don and I drove to Amarillo. The drive out West was tedious and tiring. We decided to rest a day before beginning the trip back home,” began Blackburn as the story unfolded. “The local sheriff assigned a deputy to guide us around. He was a typical Texan, tall, high hat, cowboy boots, extremely courteous and accommodating. Since the county was far too big to see in one day, he offered us a choice. He told us we could visit the beautiful Palo Duro Canyon or take a look at a ranch for needy and neglected boys. Ironically, we chose to see the canyon. While that deputy drove us around the canyon, he recounted the wonderful results of that boys ranch on the other side of the county. He told us how a former wrestler had picked up four ‘ragamuffins’ out of the slums and alleys of Amarillo … how he gave them a home with love and discipline and helped turn their lives around. We learned how the old house he bought in 1939 had grown into a home for 200 boys. This deputy was a supporter of this ranch and truly sang its praises. The next day we put the two prisoners in the back seat of our car and headed home. One suspect was an 18-year-old boy. He had been injured during the get-away so he had a tube draining out of his side and a cast on one foot. The other prisoner, his accomplice, was a frightened 17-year-old girl, some five months pregnant. A few miles east of Amarillo, the seed that the Texas Deputy had sown began to germinate. What made it stir, no one knows. Maybe it was the plight of that shot-up, crippled boy and frightened pregnant girl in our back seat. They were little more than kids, yet were in big trouble. We began to talk, agreeing if a wrestler could capture the vision of helping neglected and unwanted boys … then, so could the Sheriffs of Florida. We began talking to fellow sheriffs about starting a Boys Ranch in Florida. Later that year, we presented the idea to the Florida Sheriffs Association Board of Directors. The idea was tabled because no money was available.

Another year passed, but somehow miracles live on. In early 1957, the Sheriffs of Florida voted to approve the Honorary Membership program to raise funds for the Association. In less than six months, hundreds of Floridians became Honorary Members of the Florida Sheriffs Association. Now, instead of being broke, the Association had a bank balance of $7,000. Our dream to help troubled boys was quickly revived! No one suggested sheriffs didn’t know how to run a Boys Ranch. No one told us about the State Welfare Department’s licensing restrictions, or the State Board of Health’s inspection and permitting process. Nor did we consider the formidable task of getting the Internal Revenue Service to grant us a Charitable Tax Exemption status. Least of all, no one mentioned $7,000 wouldn’t even buy a paddy wagon, much less start a Boys Ranch. Nevertheless, at our next meeting, Florida’s Sheriffs voted for found the Florida Sheriffs Boys Ranch. The Associated Press picked up the story and gave us the much-needed publicity.” Meanwhile, Suwannee County Sheriff Hugh Lewis picked up the ball and ran with it. He knew that Live Oak Businessman Tommy Musgrove had originally given some 40 acres to the Elks Club for a youth project. He also owned another 120 acres to the south of that site. Sheriff Lewis persuaded the Elks and Tommy to consider donating this land on the banks of the Suwannee River for the Ranch. Local community leaders formed a prestigious committee, spearheaded by J.L. McMullen, who helped convince the sheriffs to select this land as the site for its proposed Ranch. The sheriffs officially accepted the offer during the FSA conference in August of 1957. The sheriffs also learned that just east of this beautiful site were two abandoned farms totaling another 550 acres. They were just perfect for the project, but it would cost $31,000 in cash to buy them both. Two local banks agreed to lend the sheriffs $13,000 each, for a

total of $26,000 toward the purchase price of the farms. The sheriffs added $5,000 of their $7,000 bank balance and bought the land. Now with only $2,000 cash in hand, the men embarked on the task of building the Florida Sheriffs Boys Ranch. Florida’s sheriffs were undaunted by the challenges before them. They had a dream and a hope—a vision of a better life for youngsters— and they had the growing support of the citizens of Florida. As news of the Boys Ranch project spread, the sheriffs’ circle of interested and supportive friends began to grow. Floridians were learning their sheriffs had virtues never seen before. This vision of helping boys with bad breaks get their lives back on track had appeal. The Florida Sheriffs Boys Ranch gained popular support and captured the imaginations and hearts of generous people across the state and nation. Countless friends, both new and old, responded. People donated money and materials, joining with the sheriffs in this labor of love. Ground was broken for the first cottage in the summer of 1958, and the first boys moved to the Ranch in early 1959. The Boys Ranch Trustees voted to dedicate that first cottage in memory of Pinellas County Sheriff Sid Saunders. He died suddenly, just after helping to hire the architect for the new cottage at the Boys Ranch. Sheriff Saunders’ untimely death triggered an outpouring of memorial gifts for the fledgling Boys Ranch. These precious gifts of love and hope helped carry on the vision to provide a safe home for so many deserving children. These original donors have now been joined by countless other friends and benefactors who have helped the Boys Ranch grow into a statewide network of programs that has served over 100,000 boys, girls, and their families from across the state of Florida. Because of the leadership of Florida’s Sheriffs and the ongoing generosity of our donor family, the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches has truly become Florida’s Charity for Florida’s Children.

Women’s World “Living Backwards to Really Start Living”

Have you ever avoided something you really wanted to do because of fear of what others would say or think of you? Have you held back because you doubt your capabilities? Ever felt inferior? Many will relate to this one; do you remember being a teenager and not wanting to wear something because you did not like some parts of your body? Do you now wish you looked like you did as a teenager? Yup! I know many, myself included, who can relate to that one! Have you wanted to ride a motorcycle but not dare fearing your skills or what others would say? Yup! I can relate to that one too; however, I did it anyway. When you find yourself facing possible death, as I have with lung cancer diagnosis, you realize that there is a whole world out there for you to live, much greater than you have allowed. You realize how important it is to take action now because life is not forever. You realize how wasteful and useless some self-imposed thoughts have held you back. I too fell into some of these to some extent. Don’t wait until a possible end to begin to really live. Instead imagine the end with all the things you woulda, coulda, shoulda done and really start living while you still can. For example are you: 1. Holding back from what you really desire 2. Staying in relationships that are toxic or simply dead 3. Staying in a job/career that you dislike 4. Living daily as a robot simply existing without passion and excitement 5. Feeling lonely, helpless and hopeless for change 6. Prisoner of your own comfort zone 7. Pretending and smiling as if life was perfect to hide the sad truth 8. Settling for mediocrity 9. Conforming to what your family and friends expect of you 10. Living someone else’s life 11. Putting yourself last as if you were not a priority 12. Wasting precious time getting upset over things that really do not matter 13. Being bitter, angry, or seeking revenge when you are the only one who is getting hurt by not letting go When you are faced with possible death your entire life is played before you. You realized what really matters and what just sucks life out of you. People constantly hear that life is too short, live full, etc. … However, that takes on a completely different meaning when facing death. Stop to really hear, feel, and see those words so you BTR 58 | BORNTORIDE.COM

can digest it into your soul. Don’t allow something so drastic to happen before you wake up and start to live full throttle with all your passion. LOVE TO LIVE Realize that you only need your own self-approval. Do what you want with your life because you only have ONE life. I have surprised many people in my life and riding motorcycles was definitely one of them. Not as extreme but surely shocking. I had to ignore and fight against all the naysayers, friends and family alike, who insisted it was a bad image and bad example because I am an attorney. I was told it was dangerous and simply not something for a professional to do. It showed me how much ignorance there is about bikers. Bikers are from all walks of life; doctors, lawyers, accountants, regular family man and women. Bikers are some of the nicest most caring people I have ever met. I will admit some have been the scariest looking, but many of the scariest have been the sweetest people on earth. Never judge a book by its cover is so true. Simply make sure not to hurt anyone, help others along the way and go live. Don’t stay stuck in places and with people that hold you back. Decide what you want and set out a plan to live it. For example if your career/job is one you are fed up with don’t quit if you have bills to pay. However, set out a plan to end it at some point where you have an alternative you do love.

If you have an inspiring story for Womens World, we want to know.

DOES IT REALLY MATTER Furthermore, do not waste your time and energy on things that don’t matter. Before you get worked up over someone or something stop and consider what it accomplishes and does it really matter. How many times have you gotten upset because you are stuck in traffic? Instead of getting a ll worked up think of it this way; how lucky you are that you are able to drive because many are so ill they cannot get out of bed or in a wheelchair? When someone cuts you off driving don’t get all worked up. Instead of getting angry be thankful you did not get into an accident. If you get all worked up and upset over someone cutting you off do you think it bothers them? NO it’s only hurting you and accomplishes nothing good. Let it go! Let it go! It is not worth your time and stress. FREEDOM Let go of the materialistic world. Material things are nice but don’t be attached to them. Seek freedom from objects to enjoy life. Simplify your life. Less is really more! Be real regardless of who will or will not like you. Leave superficiality out of your life. UNDERSTANDING/COMPASSION Take time to understand others and be compassionate. Put yourself in other’s situation and seek ways to lend a helping hand. Imagine if it were you how you would feel, what you would want. There is a lot

of pain and suffering out there where you can be someone’s angel from heaven in times of need. A great example is when someone is in the hospital. I use to do my best not to go as I dislike hospitals. Now I see that is an awful excuse. There is nothing that filled my soul with joy as when I stayed at the hospital and my room filled up with amazing friends and family. I saw other patients that had no one visit them and it was heart breaking. LIVING LIFE Start living backwards by imagining being on your death bed and how you would have wanted to live. Is what you are doing or not doing keeping you from really living? Love hard and passionately with your soul and in all you do! Don’t allow fear, doubt or anyone hold you back. You have all you need within you. Don’t doubt yourself. Be responsible, you were born to ride this journey of life so do it and don’t look back! DARE YOURSELF TO LIVE YOUR LIFE! Hayley B. The “Texas Cee-Gar,” a Triumph Thunderbird 650 powered, methanol-fuelled motorcycle with a streamlined body shell was built by airline pilot J.H. “Stormy” Mangham, and Fort Worth dealer, tuner and 2001 Motorcycle Hall of Fame inductee, Jack Wilson and piloted by legendary Texas racer Johnny Allen. On September 6, 1956, AMA and FIM observers looked on as Allen set the world absolute speed record for a motorcycle at 214.40 mph. The

TRIUMPH now-classic 1959 Triumph Bonneville was named in tribute to the Texas Cee-Gar team’s record-setting efforts. The 214.4 mph record lasted until 1962, when it was broken by Bill Johnson, riding the nitro methane powered Dudek Triumph streamliner to a speed record of 224.57. The new Bonneville T214 Limited Edition, based on the T100 Black, pays hom-

age to the remarkable land speed record achievement. The hand painted Caspian Blue and Pure White color scheme complete with red and white checker detailing echoes that of the 1956 Texas Cee-Gar. The blue front mudguard shares the same white star motif from the nosecone of the iconic streamliner. The shortened rear mudguard combined with blacked out wheel rims, handlebars, and rear suspension springs add to the authentic look which is complimented with red seat stitching detail and a smaller front headlight. Limited to a total of 1,000 bikes worldwide, each is individually numbered, and comes with an unlimited mileage, two-year factory warranty. to the realization that I must find a way to at least salvage the season, and not let down my loved ones, family, and friends. But there are always setbacks. …

The internet, albeit a great thing for most people has serious issues and I have written several times that its sole purpose was for the distribution of pornographic material. Well, the dark side of that wonderful medium of communication recently took a toll on me. I went to the Home Depot to buy some building materials and that turned out to be a financial fiasco. My debit card was hacked, and the morons who got the card number were able to make sure that I had no dough in my bank account. Although the balance was miniscule, I spent several days trying to get back the money, and I was fairly sure that I had the intelligence not to use the card to do on-line transactions. YOU my friends, should be careful as well as the thieves who do this have the capability to access your information without using a local source. The bank tells me that sometime soon I will get my money back but. … Anyhow being broke always makes for a fantastic holiday season, but besides all that BS and misfortune I continue to fight and count my blessings!

The Soldier of Misfortune Welcome, my dedicated readers to the Christmas edition of my column here in this very special magazine. I have been writing for Born To Ride going on 15 years or more, purely for the entertainment of my readers (like you) who continue to remind me every time I’m too busy or drunk to turn in a story on time. I was certainly inspired by Hunter S. Thompson’s (Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, The Rum Diaries …) daily schedule which included rising at noon, smoking Dunhills, drinking coffee and cognac till the late evening when he would begin to write. Unfortunately for me, I can’t afford a lifestyle that includes these simple pleasures in life, with the exception of some bargain cigarettes and whatever beer is on sale at the corner store. For some reason I recently wished that I had published my incredible life journey as Hunter did, but alas, I spent most of my time working or goofing off instead of doing something positive. All my indiscretions and regrets probably are not on the forefront of your concern, but they will certainly continue to provide some interesting reading material regarding life on the edge of irreparable poverty. There are few things that inspire me more than that happy anticipation in the faces of the children who expect that special gift from Santa, and you can’t forget the same look that is displayed upon the faces of your spouses, family members, and friends. This is, after all the season for commercialism - and failing to live up to the desires of your specific beneficiaries will certainly cause a grave series of consequences which will haunt you for several months after the big holiday. For me, simply surviving Thanksgiving was tough enough. Unemployed and unable to make a decent living on the sale of my remaining possessions, I started to realize that this particular Christmas holiday wasn’t going to live up to the expectations of my recipients and the never-ending repercussions are likely to follow me for quite some time. This however is not a problem for a soldier (even a Soldier of Misfortune). I continue to fight even though that enemy wearing the festive red coat and the long white beard is threatening my home territory here in the trailer park. I have come Book the Craven Moorehead Blues Band, Call 888-795-5779

While you are counting your gifts this holiday season remember there are always people who have it a lot worse than you do. Remember to count your blessings! A few months before the holiday heyday, I bought this little crappy car for the ol’ lady to drive around. I didn’t have a lot of money from the crap I sold so you get what you pay for, but the thing was better than walking and it needed a little bit of work. Thanks to one of her brothers we were able to get the needed tie rods replaced without having to pay much. This was a blessing. Then when we needed an alignment, I took the car over to Absolute Auto over on U.S. 92 to get it fixed. These guys are great! So as it turns out, we also needed front tires and they hooked us up at a good deal. I would highly recommend them if you live in the Dover / Seffner area (813-659-1302). This was a blessing. The Ol’ Lady also got the El Jefe position at the trailer park, and we were very happy to move to a much larger trailer with a lot more room and a large kitchen for us to cook the food we don’t really have - and certainly this was a blessing! So, in my opinion I guess it’s not really about how much money you have to throw around – or how much you can tell people that you have more material things than them etc. etc. … I think that really the entire holiday season should be about loving one another and remembering that Christmas is really about celebrating Christ’s birth. I know that there’s a lot to do and a lot to say, but the reality lies in the blessing that we all have received. Keep the faith bitches!! I’m still pissed off, still broke, but I continue to believe and fight! Here’s wishing you a very great Christmas and remember to speed safely! BORNTORIDE.COM | BTR 69

Spyke & Mike

Happy Holidays

Until May, no signs of stopping, The snowbirds, they keep a flocking, Us bikers, they don’t stop shocking, We all wish they did more walking! Oh, the Canadians are so frightful, And the Q-tips aren’t so delightful, We’re trapped here driving to and fro, Make them go, make them go, make them go. It’s that jolly old fat man in a red suit time of year my BTR friends. Time to spend a lot of money, spend some time remembering the good things about this year, and time to spend a few moments with the in-laws. Mike did all three while spending too much time with his cousins: Jack Daniels, Jim Beam, and Johnnie Walker. That gave me time to spend on the computer telling you, my avid fans, what each cousin drove Mike to sing about in the shower. Jack made him real mean and feisty. Jim had him chanting about the people around here this time of year. And Johnny, well, when he ‘hangs’ with Johnny he NEVER goes out in public. See if you can match the cousin with the carol. (Sung to the tune of “Let it Snow”) Oh, the northern drivers are so frightful, And the accidents aren’t so delightful, This stop and go traffic really blows, Make them go, make them go, make them go. Old folks are having troubles stopping, Not seeing us, they keep popping, And the Harley hates going really slow, Make them go, make them go, make them go. When we finally parked the ole’ bike, How Mike hates going back to the store, Because the tourists make it such a hike, And he can’t take his gun to shoot 4 more. The traffic is never dying, While we sit here Mike keeps crying, ‘Cause it just won’t end, we know, Make them go, make them go, make them go.

(Sung to the tune of “Santa Claus is Coming to Town”) Oh, you better watch out You better not pry You better stay back I’m telling you why Mike is wielding a gun. He’s making a list And checking it twice Gonna find out Who needs to be iced Mike is wielding a gun Don’t give him any trouble He’ll blow you right away Don’t give him any cause to shoot Or you won’t see Christmas day Oh, you better believe He’s packing a rod No coal in your stocking Just lead in your bod Mike is wielding a gun He doesn’t want cookies Or none of that Christmas crud Don’t leave him any milk What he wants is just your blood Mike is wielding a gun He doesn’t trust anybody Wants to shoot his colleagues dead Thought Craven was a sissy And swore Ronnie was a red So, you better watch out You better not pry You better stay back I’m telling you why Mike is wielding a gun (Sung to the tune of “Walking in a Winter Wonderland”)

Lacy things---the wife is missin’ He didn’t ask---her permission Mike’s wearing her clothes Her silk pantyhose Walkin’ ‘round in women’s underwear In the store---there’s a teddy Little straps---like spaghetti It holds Mike so tight Like handcuffs at night Walkin’ ‘round in women’s underwear In the office there’s a guy named Jesse He pretends that Mike is Murphy Brown He’ll say, “are you ready?” Mike says, “whoa man!” “Let’s wait until our wives are out of town!” Later on, Mike will wanna Put on a dress, like Madonna Apply some eyeshade And join the parade Walkin’ ‘round in women’s underwear Lacy things---the wife is missn’ He didn’t ask---her permission Mike’s wearing her clothes Her silk pantyhose Walkin’ ‘round in women’s underwear Struttin’ ‘round in women’s underwear Runin’ ‘round in women’s underwear! It’s been three days since his last alcohol infusion and I’m ready to check out some Christmas displays. I climb off my perch and over to Mike lying on the couch. I squawk, “Mike! It’s just after dark and just before New Year’s Eve. Let’s take a ride thru the well-lit neighborhood. Seeing bright lights, sitting on a rumbling Harley, and listening to sappy Christmas tunes is a great way to get rid of that lingering hangover you've been crying about.” Mikes' eyes open wide and he says, “Hell ya! It will definitely put me in the mood for the holiday and more of my three cousins. Spyke, let’s make like the little drummer boy and beat it.” With that said he fires up the Fat Bird and puts me on his shoulder. Getting my wings in the wind and its wheels down the road, we jingle on. SPYKE BORNTORIDE.COM | BTR 79

God’s Got You

Finally the long, hot season of summer riding has come to an end. The love bugs are gone, there is a little nip in the air, and my bike’s air conditioner (my jacket zipper) once again can provide me with a soft, refreshing touch to cool me as I ride. The transition was so quick I almost missed it, having to go from a vest to a full jacket and chaps to stay warm! Of course, throughout the day, all the extra bundling comes back off one layer at a time.

BTR 80 | BORNTORIDE.COM

Gotta admit this time of year reminds me why I live in Florida. My brother-in-law has to put his bike away each fall and wait for the snow to melt and the temperatures to climb before he can resume riding. Here in Florida, we can ride year round, as long as we are willing to recognize the seasons in how we dress as we ride. There’s a season of tee shirts, sunscreen and bare hands, a season of long sleeve shirts and lightweight gloves, a season of leather jackets and heavier gloves, and if it gets cold enough, a season for chaps and heavy duty gloves. With those seasons, we have to mind the air pressure in our tires and shocks, we need to remember that the road surfaces react differently to our tires, depending on the heat or cold. Ever hit a road repair, in the heat of the summer that looks like a tar snake? It can get your attention really quickly as the bike tires try to break traction on the slippery surface. For those of you like me, that show our age in the graying effect on the hair that stays implanted in our heads, we have to sadly recognize the seasons in our lives in respect to what we ride, how long we can ride, and how we ride (slow

and meandering vs. like a rocket ship). Great thing is, we have the freedom to decide how to face those seasons. In the Bible, we are taught that “To everything there is a season, A time for every purpose under heaven.” Just like riding in the wind, our very lives have seasons to them, and a perfect time for those events that mark our lives. We may not always understand those seasons, or the effects of them, but we can find comfort in knowing that when things are tough, we are not alone. If you are walking in a valley, if there is something in your life that hurts, if a relationship has been broken, you are not alone. Sometimes the things we face are simply there to teach us a special lesson as it pertains to the season in which we are walking. Verse 11 tells us that “He (God) has made everything appropriate in its time.” So what’s the lesson? God’s got you, in every season, and He will never let you go! In the Wind,

Denny Dingler
