Street Strategies at Work

THE SHARK Imagine a typical scene from a nature-network documentary, one that shows a fur seal frantically swimming with a great white shark in ruthless pursuit, the huge snout of the shark filling the television screen. In the corresponding street scene, you’re riding your motorcycle down a wide arterial street when a huge sedan closes in on you, its grille filling your mirrors. Just as you change lanes to get out of this car-shark’s path, the tailgater also changes lanes behind you. What are your best strategies for avoiding (or evading) this situation? Strategy: As soon as you notice a tailgater approaching in your mirrors, take steps to get out of the way. Activate your turn signal and make an obvious, decisive lane change to the right or left. If the car is already upon you before you notice its presence, take care before making a move to avoid the “shark pursuit” situation described above. When evading a shark, signal early and pause for just an instant (to make sure that the tailing driver isn’t also planning to change into the same lane) before making a definite and decisive move into the other lane. Your actions should clearly communicate your intentions to the other driver so he is fully aware of what moves you intend to make. For more safety information go to www.msf-usa.org

Featured EVENT

Did you know that Born To Ride will be celebrating 1,000 episodes of Born To Ride television? This is a huge milestone in the already eclectic history of Born To Ride! With any milestone of this magnitude, you need to throw a party, right? Thankfully, the PERFECT location has been found at Scooter’s Saloon, located at Brandon Harley-Davidson! I decided to go up to Scooter’s to try – firsthand – the menu of delectable delights prior to my interview with everyone at Scooter’s. I have to honestly tell you, I was NOT disappointed! The menu at Scooter’s is a biker’s dream come true … you can chose from items such as Fatboy Fingers, Shovelhead Spin Dip, Boss Hog Pork Stack, or for those that are watching their diet, a Wheely Wedge Salad. I certainly wasn’t into watching my dietary restrictions when I ordered the ½ pound cheeseburger and steak fries. For this fun trip, I brought along the connoisseur of burgers and fries, Johnny Martin. If anyone can give you a true indication of good, fresh food, it’s Johnny Martin. He feasted on the HUGE Scooter’s BBQ Burger. This huge burger is chargrilled with applewood smoked bacon, cedar cheese and ‘Ol Lady on ion rings. He was NOT disappointed! The food was fresh, hot, and served by a beautiful server, Amy. Looking around the restaurant, many of the customers were enjoying the Roadhouse Church Chili, Nomad Nachos, Poker Run Pulled Pork, and Scooter’s Slab O’Ribs. That aforementioned list is just scratching

BTR 12 | BORNTORIDE.COM

the surface of this amazing menu of food items! Oh, and did I mention that there is a world-famous Scooter Sauce? You have to taste it to believe it! And since we’re bikers, we KNOW what good food tastes like. Scooter’s menu DOES NOT disappoint! There are some experienced and intelligent people behind the success of Scooter’s Saloon. One person is the Saloon’s namesake, Scott “Scooter” Courtney. Scooter is a successful local businessman partnering in the local Coyote Ugly Saloon, Hula Bay, The Out Post Tap House and Tavern, and Platt’s Pizza. “When we came in here, we were excited to work with the Harley Team; Preston Farrior and Gary Bang. We are all a team – we aren’t separated at all.” The enthusiasm of this team emanates through and through. From Scooter, to Brandon Harley-Davidson’s Preston Farrior, Gary Bang, and Scooter’s Saloon Chef, Richard, you are pulled into a vortex of positive energy that stays with you hours after you leave! Preston Farrior and Gary Bang, president and vice president of Harley-Davidson of Brandon, are a huge part of this positive dream team. Gary shared, “When we started this dealership, we wanted to have an event area for our guests. We never really saw this as a restaurant. I met a guy who told me I should turn this building (where Scooter’s Saloon is located) into a restaurant. We made some modifications and concentrated it into a BBQ joint. It fits our theme. We have five Harley-Davidson stores and each store has a theme. The Brandon store has a cowboy theme. Over 100 years ago, Brandon was known for cattle. We have two long-horn steers here on property. We had a vision of a destination store. All the ponds are stocked with fish; Bass, Brim, Catfish, and Koi. One guy caught a 15 pound Bass the other day. People can feed the fish here, too! In our service department, we have four fishing poles so our guests can go fish while their bike is being worked on. It’s a unique feature. This property is located on 15 acres. It’s all wet-zoned, all fenced in. No schools or residential homes within a mile of the property, we have overflow parking and just lots of room to have large events. We had between 8,000 – 9,000 people here at our grand opening. So we’ve had some pretty large crowds here.” Let’s talk about this GIGANTIC Grand Opening at Scooter’s Saloon! Starting on Friday, February 20, Scooter’s Saloon will be full of fun and

great food. The evening will start with a bike night, drink and food specials and the HUGE merchandise tent that Brandon Harley-Davidson will have chocked full of specially-priced merchandise. Preston added, “Friday is an anomaly for bike nights. You will not find another bike night located on 15 acres of property! This kicks off at 4 p.m. We’re going to roll happy hour into bike night. It’s going to be a fantastic event and one that will continue every Friday going forward.” Some of the Friday night drink specials will include $15 beer buckets, and some enticing $5 specialty drinks which include a few of my personal favorites: Summertime Sangria loaded with fresh fruit and white wine, Captain and Coke, and Tito’s Spiked Lemonade. Again, that’s just a small sampling of the drink specials at Scooter’s Saloon Happy Hour! There will be specials all day and all night. From Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, it’s a huge Grand Opening Weekend. Vendors and music, including the band Retribution (from 2 p.m. – 6 p.m.) will be in abundance as will the debut of the Tampa Bay Cornhole Tournament! There are over 1,000 people in this organization and they will be at Scooter’s Grand Opening weekend! Scooter is already planning future additions to Scooter’s Saloon. “We are having special walls made to enclose the inside of the bar during the summer months. Gary saw the insight to have shade trees planted throughout the property a few years ago. They will be in full bloom adding more shade as well.” Co-owner Russ Bruno, mentioned Born To Ride and why they work so well together! “I’ve known Ron for quite some time now. To me it was the obvious move!” “Scooter and I have been involved in several other partnerships for over 20 years. For the future, we would like to see other stores roll out. We want to make it a destination spot but

BTR 14 | BORNTORIDE.COM

also provide more event-driven promotions with live acts and other varieties of enthusiast-type shows. We’re trying to bring more entertainment in the area. The timing of this business opening is really good for us!” Richard MacKizer and Anthony Chick are the men behind the successful food at Scooter’s Saloon. Richard, the managing partner and executive chef, already had a great business relationship with Scooter. When Scooter asked him to be a part of this new venture, Richard took it and ran with it! “The products at Scooter’s Saloon are fresh and prepared from scratch. Nothing is frozen! The quality is at an exceptional level. All the burgers are 80/20 Black Angus – 8 ounces of goodness! Our chicken tenders are fresh as well; every morning we cut and prepare them. We take tremendous pride in the products that we serve. It translates into the taste and quality the customer receives. We’re serious about the food. It’s no joke!” Richard is quick to mention his Corporate Chef, Anthony Chick, “I have had the distinct pleasure of winning several local burger competitions with Anthony. I didn’t win those contests by myself; Anthony and I worked together as a team. Without Chef Anthony Chick, I would not have been able to create such an amazing menu.” Richard grew up working in all aspects of the Hospitality Industry. His 35 years has seen him create and/or manage several successful venues in both the restaurant side, as well as bar/nightclubs. “I started working for my father’s friend, Chef Henry, at a five star restaurant, where I washed dishes, and scrubbed pots and pans. I eventually learned to do prep work, and by the age of 15, could produce five star cuisine.” Richard tended bar during college, and was fortunate to be part of Tampa’s Nightclub scene for several years as he managed popular venues such as Stinger’s, Yucatan Liquor Stand, and Border-

line. His culinary experiences include Marriott, J. Alexander’s, Houlihan’s, and Green Iguana. Although not a graduate from any culinary arts school, Richard learned the business the old fashioned way: by working every job in both the front and back of house. “It was difficult at times, but in reflection, I see it has made me more well-rounded in all operational aspects. I have a true sense of appreciation for each job, and what it takes to get the job done successfully.” Gary mentioned that the Harley Girls will be signing their calendars during the entire weekend. The best surprise is this – every penny from the sales of the calendars will be going to a non-profit organization called the Quinton Aaron Foundation. The mission of this non-profit is to provide hope, encouragement, confidence, and resources to children on the brink of suicide or battling the damaging effects on self-esteem and confidence caused by the actions or words of others. Quinton knows first-hand the effects of bullying. He shares his stories and experiences in dealing with obesity and bullying. Who is Quinton Aaron? He is an actor who starred in his first lead role playing Michael Oher in The Blind Side. Quinton starred alongside Sandra Bullock and Tim McGraw in The Blind Side, released November 20, 2009. Directed by John Lee Hancock, the film was adapted from Michael Lewis’s 2006 book, The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game, which features the real-life story of Michael Oher. Oher had started in 10 games as a guard during his first season with the Ole Miss Rebels, becoming a first-team freshman all-American, and later an American football offensive tackle for the Baltimore Ravens. We were fortunate to get Quinton to talk with us about Scooter’s Saloon Grand Opening Continued on pg 73

MOTORCYCLING IN THE 1970S

by Richard Skelton

‘Motorcycling in the 1970s’ is a series of five eBooks about motorcycling. The books are designed to be read together, but can also be enjoyed separately. The first volume, A Brief History of Motorcycling from 1887 to 1969, is a general history, swiftly told, of motorcycling in Britain from its beginnings at the end of the 19th century up until the dawn of the 1970s (interwoven to an extent with two-wheeled goings on in the USA and elsewhere). It charts motorcycling’s pioneering years, skips through two world wars, tells of social acceptability in the 1920s, hard times in the 1930s and slow decline in the 1950s and 1960s. This first book attempts to make sense of the two-wheeled world order, and of motorcycling’s place in society and everyday life, and sets the scene for larger, more detailed volumes which follow. Volumes 2 - 4 are subtitled Funky Motorcycling 1 - 3 and together they form a comprehensive, in-depth history of the bikes and motorcycling trends and events in the

1970s. These three books tell the story of the arrival of the Superbike, the continuing and inexorable rise of the Japanese motorcycle industry and, partly from an insider’s point of view, the wasteful, lingering death of its British equivalent. They tell of the thrilling and extraordinary sporting machines from Italy and of the bulletproof BMW twins designed in Bavaria. They tell of motorcycling culture and of two-wheeled life and lives. In the 1970s, motorcycling became a leisure activity in a new and exciting way, there were more motorcyclists than ever before, or since, and dozens of new and ever more fabulous and technologically advanced motorcycles crammed the showrooms every year. It was the time of Jarno Saarinen and Giacomo Agostini and of Kenny Roberts and Barry Sheene. The time of British magazines Motorcycle Sport and Bike, and of Cycle in the USA, the time of journalists Cook Neilson, Mark Williams and LJK Setright in his pomp. These books set out the argument that although the protagonists were large-

ly unaware of it at the time, the 1970s as a whole can now be seen to have been a golden era in the history of the movement, a pivotal decade which represent a high point in the history of motorcycling that is never likely to be matched. The final book in the series is entitled ‘The Magic of Motorcycling.’ Something of a bonus volume that takes a sideways look at the 1970s classic motorcycle scene in the second decade of the 21st century, and explores what it is that makes motorcycling so special to so many people yet an anathema to a great many more. It also includes a comprehensive set of appendices – listing nostalgic, amusing and sometimes poignant reminders of the life and culture of the 1970s, reminding us of the global goings-on and domestic backdrop underlying the motorcycling scene and of course all lesser matters! The story of the project... My first book, Funky Mopeds, was published by Veloce Publishing in 2004, and considering it is about a very British phenomenon (the short-lived 1970s sports BORNTORIDE.COM | BTR 17

moped craze and its social impact) I think it is fair to say it has sold reasonably well (5,000+ copies). Motorcycling in the 1970s is a follow up of a sort but much broader in scope. It took me some years to get around to writing it and several more to get it done. There were a few books out there on the 70s, but they tended to focus on glamorous superbikes or certain marques, so I thought there was room for an encyclopedic cultural history of motorcycling of that time. That is what I set out to achieve. I completed the manuscript in April 2013 and sent it to publisher Rod Grainger of Veloce. Rod said he liked and admired the project, but because of its huge size (getting on for 300,000 words) and scope he was worried about its

BTR 18 | BORNTORIDE.COM

commercial potential. To keep cost down, he suggested a book without any images, but I felt pictures were needed to illustrate the text. I decided to self-publish, and in October 2013 I engaged a company to undertake the design and layout of an eBook. What followed was something of a trial. Many weeks passed at a time without progress, communication was abysmal, and the people working on it routinely ignored my instructions.

Finally, in May this year, I made the decision to take the project away from the firm, even though it was not completed. A fee was agreed and paid. Fortunately, the next people I engaged, www.ebooksbydesign.co, proved excellent. A series of eBooks were produced quickly and easily; the process was straightforward and enjoyable. I launched the book on Amazon and other platforms in July 2014. Reviews so far have been generally positive, but I received criticism about the cover designs which have consequently just been changed. I have also just raised the price to $2.99

Motorcycling in the 70s by Richard Skelton available at Amazon.com

per volume (at $1.99 the royalties were negligible - Amazon certainly take their pound of flesh!). So that is where the project currently stands. I hope you enjoy it as an eBook and that one day, perhaps in an abridged form, it can be produced as a physical thing. ABOUT ME This collection of books is, in some respects, a love letter to motorcycling. It is certainly written from the heart. I was born in late 1960 and I started riding powered two-wheelers in 1976, on a fabulous little 50cc ‘popsicle purple’ Yamaha FS1-E. Straight away, I felt that riding set me free in a way that was not only instantly joyful but also deep meaningful and somehow magically transcendental. I was also aware

A series of 5 Ebooks about Motorcycling.

I was stepping into a great, flowing river of history and I was deeply glad of it. I quickly became as interested in motorcycling’s past as its present – hungry to find out about the fascinating machines and singular people that made motorcycling what it was and had been. And I began to explore what it was that set motorcyclists apart from the majority and made biking so uniquely enjoyable. As an avid rider and reader, I became a student of ‘the sport.’ Those thoughts and feelings have endured for nearly 40 years now. And while I still find motorcycling in all its aspects as boundlessly fascinating as did my teenage self, it is the period in which I plunged in and joined the flow, the time when I was at my most impressionable and when my

mind was at its most absorbent that still holds the greatest interest for me today the 1970s. The time when I fell in love with motorcycling. FUNKY MOPEDS - THE 1970S SPORTS MOPED PHENOMENON When I entered my forties at the beginning of the 21st century, I began to become nostalgic about my first year of motorcycling. The 12 months I spent on my fabulous little Yamaha FS1-E between November 1976 and November 1977. In late 1972 the British Government raised the minimum age for riding motorcycles to 17, obliging all 16-year-old would-be motorcyclists to ride shopping mopeds for 12 months, or so they hoped, decide to give bikes a miss

altogether. But completely unwittingly, they created an entirely new category of two-wheeled machine (the sports moped) which brought about a cultural phenomenon and a fuelled a motorcycling boom. There was a frenzy of innovation from motorcycle manufacturers, each intent on offering the most exciting machine possible packing only 50ccs. These super little bikes became ‘must have’ objects for many thousands of British teenagers, including me. It was wonderful. The bikes were fast (or so we thought), we were free (or so we believed) and it was great fun. Joyful, in fact, and many of us became hooked into motorcycling for a lifetime as a result of our shared and happy experience. The government changed

the law again, redefining the moped as a machine with a design speed of 30mph (20mph less than fabulous little mini motorbikes like the FS1-E and 30mph less than some Italian machines). It killed the breed and cut off at the root, British motorcycling began to wither away. Nearly 40 years later I decided to write a book about the 1970s sports moped phenomenon. WHAT HAPPENED NEXT After my Yamaha FS1-E I had numerous ‘proper’ bikes but it would be many years before I came to own a Ducati. Significant machines in chronological order include: Honda CB200, Triumph Bonneville (T140V), Honda 400/4, Moto Guzzi 850 Le Mans, Yamaha FJ1200. Then, after a break, Yamaha 600 Fazer, Ducati 748, Ducati Multistrada, Moto Guzzi V11 Le Mans, Triumph Bonneville (modern type) and now a BMW R1200R. I left school at 16 and worked in the printing industry until I was made redundant in 1980. In 1981 I got a job with a small independent film company and made my own 16mm documentary film about sidecar racing called ‘Sidecar’ which is still available from Duke Marketing on the Isle of Man. Then I worked in professional

Motorcycling in the 70s by Richard Skelton available at Amazon.com

television production for many years, starting off as an assistant film editor at Yorkshire Television and then becoming a freelance sound editor. During this time I rode sporadically. Some years many miles, some none at all. My TV career continued until 2010, but in 2003 I found time to write my first book, Funky Mopeds and from 2004 for three years I worked part-time as a reporter and feature writer covering the British Superbike Championship for British publications BikeSport News and Motorcycle Racer. At that time Alan Clark (my friend’s Yamaha RD200 riding brother in the above story from 1975) was running a two man team competing in the 125GP support class so it was an especially enjoyable time. In recent years television work has tailed off (many reasons) and my wife and I have earned a crust by running a bed and breakfast business in our home and operating a small company renting out classic cars. More recently, we have started a new business selling souvenir toy bears (www. summerwineclassics.co.uk). I have also spent time writing Motorcycling in the 1970s and Chris Carter at Large. Other projects are in the pipeline. BORNTORIDE.COM | BTR 21

Women’s World Excuses are the poison potion of dreams. Tomorrow, next time, later, after this or after that happens … tic toc tic toc! Wake up! Life is passing you by. Life is not forever and that clock is ticking! No more waiting “IT’S YOUR TURN” now! Time to enjoy this journey of life. No matter where you are in life you have things to be grateful for, so hold your head high learn from past and present circumstances and let’s LIVE! We come up with so many excuses why we don’t do something right now and tomorrow may never come. If you have something in your heart follow it now. We are so good at coming up with excuses not to do something just so we feel good about our decision. In the end we only rob ourselves from living. Common biker example - Some people want to purchase a motorcycle but keep postponing it waiting for some future event. Many use the excuse they want to wait until they retire or have a place with a garage, finish divorce, get married, kids leave for college, etc. I hear so many excuses like that; unfortunately, that future many times never comes. Whatever the dream is, the time to live your dream is now. Get out NOW and be and do what you have in your heart! I have learned by force due to circumstances that excuses are just excuses. We say that it’s just not possible right now, but when we are pushed to the edge into doing it we realized our excuses were just that EXCUSES. Life doesn’t end when we follow our dreams now – and we get to live the moment NOW. In other words enjoy life, enjoy the now, and take risks! Not crazy risks but well thought out calculated risks. Don’t live in the future because you’ll miss the present and that may be all you get. Life is a precious journey to be enjoyed along the way. Unfortunately so many of us postpone things by planning on some future thing to happen without enjoying the now. Don’t let that be you! Take Action NOW! Take some time aside to be alone and go deep into thinking. Analyze where your life

is now and where you would like it to be. Analyze all the reasons you have created not to pursue your dreams and passions. Look at how your life would be if you decided to pursue and live your dreams and passions now. See how your life will be now and in 5, 10, 20 years if you continue and do nothing. Once you are brutally honest

those you must distance yourself from and all those who do support you in a positive way. 2. Things – useless things that surround you. How much clutter have you accumulated? Secret - Less is better! You need to be clutter free. We do not need anything we haven’t touched in at least one year. Get rid of it and make room for your new life. Start room by room in your home. Free yourself from attachment to the material world and a huge weight will be lifted. LET IT GO! 3. Stress – what is creating the most stress in your life? List all the things that are stressing you out. Stress causes us so many illnesses. List all that is stressing you and what you need done to make it stop.

with yourself of where you are and where you want to be it’s time to “Clean Up,” so you have the needed foundation to plan and strategize. CLEANING UP - take a look at all the toxic that surrounds you such as: 1. People - negative people that surround you. Make a decision to distance yourself from those people who bring you down and don’t support your dreams. Even those that you love dearly, although it’s very difficult you need to make a decision. If they refuse to understand and respect your ideas they do not serve your higher purpose and you must distance yourself. Make a list of all

PLANNING AND STRATEGIZING – building your future. 1. Blueprint - Setting up a blueprint for action. You can’t build if you have no blueprint. Creating a blueprint of how to get from where you are to where you want to be is your bridge to your new life. 2. Monitor- You also want to monitor your progress daily or at minimum weekly so that you know the moment you’re getting off track. 3. Flexibility - Staying on track and engrave the vision of your goal in your brain - Life happens and there are many detours so you must remain flexible however your focus on the goal must stay solid. How you reach your goal will vary along the way it that is fine. Never Settle for a Mundane or Mediocre Life! Make your dreams a reality starting NOW. When I Ride down the Road I’m King of the Road on my Boss Hoss I’ve ridden many motorcycles in my life. I would go to Daytona and see these big Boss Hoss motorcycles. I stopped to talk to people who had them; they told me about them — how powerful they were and how different a ride you experience when you sit on one and ride. That started my desire to own one. However, that would be delayed by a severe motorcycle accident I had in 2008. Since then it has gotten harder for me to ride in comfort and shift gears, so I started researching automatic motorcycles. I always came back to the Boss Hoss with my searches. I went back to Daytona in 2012 and started asking dealers how they were made, how they rode, and how were they maintained? I rode a couple in Daytona and I was sold; I just had to have one of my own! I bought a Boss Hoss trike. What a feeling: people look at the trike give me the thumbs up while taking pictures, or want to sit on it so they can have a picture of themselves on the motorcycle. Even an occasional law enforcement officer has asked me about the Boss Hoss. This past year I got the fever again, and after letting a friend know what I was looking for he found the perfect one for me. It is amazing how smooth the Boss Hoss rides! It is so different from any other motorcycle. You feel the power under you as you ride. When you ride down the road you feel like you are the king of the road. I’m looking toward the future to look at the new designs when they come out, but for right now I enjoy my Boss Hoss motorcycles and will have then for a long time. Born To Ride for Life! Joe Smith

On February 2, 2013, the United States lost an amazing person due to a homicide. His name was Christopher Scott “Chris” Kyle. Chris was born April 8, 1974 in Odessa, Texas. He was like a lot of young men in Texas; he wanted to ride broncos as a profession until he was injured. At that point, Chris decided he wanted to join the military and decided he wanted to enlist in the military. That decision changed his life for the next 10 years. He became whom the world knew as one of deadliest snipers in American history assigned to SEAL Team 3, Sniper Element. During his four tours, he was shot twice, and was involved in six IED attacks and was awarded the following medals: Special Warfare insignia (SEAL Trident) Silver Star (1 Star) Bronze Star (w/’V’ Device and 4 Stars) Purple Heart (w/1 Star) Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal(w/1 Star) Combat Action Ribbon (w/1 Star) Navy Good Conduct Medal (w/2 Stars) National Defense Medal See the Movie “SNIPER” in theaters now. In Chris’ case, it was four tours, which became problematic at home. Chris and his wife decided he would retire from the Navy SEALs after 10 years of service. In 2009, Chris left the Navy BORNTORIDE.COM | BTR 59

On February 28, I was presented with the opportunity to participate in something that has become close to my heart after the loss of U.S. Navy SEAL Chief Petty Officer Chris Kyle. I met a 38-year-old artist by the name is Greg Marra and he is the man behind American Patriots in Art. While talking with Greg it became apparent to me, the statue deserved an escort on the start of its journey to Texas. A quick email was sent out and low and behold, under a brilliant blue Florida sky with the temperature hovering around 43 degrees eleven Patriot Guard Riders appeared on Monday morning to give Carl and Carol Wallin’s of Reliable Carriers, Inc. a much-deserved escort through

parts of Sarasota and Manatee Counties. I didn’t know Chris personally; however, I have met and spent time with some of his SEAL teammates over the years, most recently this last summer. I

t’s that time of the year when you have some days set aside to do some riding and relaxing. The big question is:

WHERE TO GO THIS YEAR?

You know you want to head to the mountains and hills where it will be cooler, but you don’t want to go too far north. You’ve already done the Tail of the Dragon at Deals Gap a half a dozen times and you need something new and refreshing. Well guess what? There is a place you probably went right on by heading up from Florida just an hour and a half north of Atlanta. Blairsville, Georgia is the destination and the Copperhead Lodge is where you want to stay! It’s far enough out of town to keep it secluded and nestled up in the woods but close enough to run into town to get some groceries if you plan on staying awhile.

We were lucky enough to spend a few days at Copperhead Lodge in July and we had a wonderful and relaxing time. Once we got out of Florida and off the super slabs, we rode up through Macon, took back roads to Athens, then up through Vogel State Park and into the town of Cleveland, Georgia where the roads got real interesting for the next 35 miles into Blairsville. The GPS said it would take over an hour to do the 35 miles through the mountains. With all the curves it was more like 35 miles of smiles! It was a long day of riding, but we finally pulled into Copperhead Lodge and made our way to the front desk. We were immediately greeted by Michelle Evans, co-owner, manager, bartender, promoter and motorcycle guide. Yes

... she does it all we found out over the next few days and she made the Energizer Bunny look like a wimp! We were tired and she knew it as she handed over the keys to our cabin, “Come on back once you get settled in and we’ll talk and you can get some dinner,” she said. We settled in to our cozy cabin that included a king-size bed, full kitchen, living room, deck and a screened porch. It was decorated in a cowboy theme and it made us feel at home. You could definitely spend some serious time in this place, as it was not your average “hotel” room! Best of all, the cabins have a separate garage to park your motorcycle, and for the ones that don’t there is covered motorcycle parking up at the lodge. We could already tell

this place was designed for bikers, oh yeah! You could also get a room at the Lodge itself on the lower level and park your bike right outside the window of your room. After a very short walk, we were back at the lodge for dinner and let me tell you, this place was awesome! From the front door, you walk into the Grand Lobby, which actually should be called ‘the Great Gathering Place” with its vaulted ceilings and huge fireplace. Someone had actually spent some time and put a motorcycle design right into the stonework of the fireplace ... you won’t see that anywhere else. So what would you expect on the menu in Northern Georgia? Barbeque of course,

but how about wild Alaskan salmon and the Thursday night special of ALL YOU CAN EAT Maine lobster for your dining pleasure! This was no ordinary menu as is Copperhead Lodge is no ordinary destination. We had fried grit balls to start with, then a rack of baby back ribs and of course the lobster. Everything we had was delicious and we wished we had saved room for desert after they told us about their decedent treats. Afterwards we strolled into the bar for a couple of beers (which come out of a 28 degree cooler) and chatted with Michelle to find out more about this wonderful discovery. “This place was actually built in 2006 and we bought it in 2009. After a lot of changes it reopened in 2010. It sits on 40 acres in the

Appalachian Mountains and it had been a dream for my husband Anthony and myself to own and operate such a unique resort,” said Michelle. “By the way, I will be taking a group over to the Sandbar in Hiawassee for bike night on the back roads if you’re interested, kick stands up at 7:00!” she said. Tempting, but we were beat from the day’s traveling. After a good night’s sleep we spent the morning walking the whole resort and checking out every cabin on the property. Everyone had a personality of their own and had something on the property that let you know there was a biker staying there. There are some for sale and there are also lots available for more cabins. We are seriously thinking that Copperhead Lodge would

be a great place to own a vacation rental. There is information on their website that tells you all about it. www.copperheadlodge.com One really great thing that caught our attention about this place is it is an awesome music venue. On the front of the property is an area called “the Yard,” a big grassy field (surrounded by tall trees) which slopes down into a natural amphitheater with a covered stage. There is always somebody scheduled to perform and Friday night we were lucky enough to catch country recording artist, John Berry. Motorcycles and music are two of our favorite things in the world, and now we have the mountains to go along with it ... doesn’t get much better than this, unless you want to take a

dip in the 40,000 gallon saltwater pool! Saturday morning came around quickly and it was time to do some riding. One thing that really stood out to us ... there was no traffic wherever we went. That alone would make a great day of riding. We were told about “the Gauntlet,” a 135 mile ride that starts and ends at Copperhead Lodge. It is one of the main reasons we came up to Georgia in the first place. We were given a detailed map with turn by turn directions on the back. I will admit now that I should have paid attention to those directions! We did follow most of the map to some great roads with twisties and sweepers, and we rode a lot of great roads that were not on our map. Doesn’t matter though, we had a great ride, saw some awesome scenery and the best part was that it ended back at the Copperhead Lodge. That night was the Saturday night tradition of music on the porch. The porch was a huge wrap around area of the lodge that was just perfect for outside dining and drinks. After

another fabulous meal, (Prime Rib and the best Salmon this side of the Mason-Dixon Line) we melted into a couch on the porch for an evening of music by local band, 12 Gauge Persuaders. We don’t see any reason to go back to Deals Gap, as we have found our new mountain get-away, Copperhead Lodge. Everyone here has made us feel welcomed and to tell you the truth, we don’t want to leave. This is a 1st Class operation that can only get bigger and better as time passes and the word gets out. Christmas is looking mighty fine right now, maybe we should make our reservations soon. Now, we need to talk about this rooster next door. ... One last note ... Michelle, you’re one ambitious person, and you do it all; Copperhead Lodge would still be closed if you hadn’t come along. Thank you for your blood, sweat and tears that have made your dream come true. We will see you again. For all the information you need about

Craven Moorehead

I sit here in the trailer park writing a piece of prose that has nothing to do with the magazine or anything that my dedicated readers would be interested in whatsoever. My rants and raves are likely of no interest to any of ya’ll and it’s rare that I get a chance to simply sit down and express my true feelings. I keep these feelings to myself. All I can do is think back on the past and remember some of the good times that I had out on the open road. An adventure always awaits when one sets out with no particular destination in mind, and it isn’t really about the destination after all – it’s about the journey. That’s what brought me to Barstow. I must have taken a wrong turn in Oklahoma somewhere and after a day or more of riding, I realized that I had already traveled fairly deep into California. I-40 is like that. It is a never-ending road that somehow beckons the spirit sorta like Route 66 and other legendary highways, which since their inception, have called the names of millions of curious explorers who were seeking something different. A change from the daily grind or an escape from reality that eventually makes you angry is always a call to the highway, and back in that day gasoline was about as cheap as it is currently. A motorcycle is always more economical than most any sort of automobile or truck, so many of us who utilize that cheaper transportation option often end up going on road-trips that really have no forethought or ultimate purpose. I believe that is the sprirt of freedom that we enjoy most about the biker lifestyle. Some regular citizens may look at us and scoff or perhaps cower in fear, but until they see the road from the saddle they cannot understand the experience that we all enjoy. “How the hell did I end up here?” was all I can remember saying to myself as I exited the interstate and took to the streets of the city of Barstow looking for food and possibly a room where I could spend the night outside of the comfort of my tent and sleeping bag. I also needed to wash my remaining dirty clothes, but that was never really a large concern. Back in the day the general population considered us as being just greasy, dirty hippies, or hellions who were a menace to society with no redeeming social value. Boy, how things have changed! Nowadays should you have the courage to go Book the Craven Moorehead Blues Band, Call 888-795-5779

“Easy Rider” and try to eliminate one of us by the shotgun method, you may likely hit a congressman, lawyer, doctor or other prominent citizen of the country. It’s a whole new era in our ever expanding world. Seeking nourishment was foremost in my road-weary mind and body, so I cruised around until I found something that was open at 9:00 PM or so. And there it was, somewhere on First Street, a Del Taco joint suddenly appears like a ghost from the past. I thought that most of these restaurants had gone the way of the “Jack in the Box” franchise, but I later learned that this particular town still had one of those also. Anyhow, being from Florida and not daring to enter the city of Orlando, I hadn’t eaten my favorite tacos for a very long time and I was hungry enough to just go order my special and eat in the parking lot as usual. While I was devouring my meal, a group of riders showed up –evidently to eat some dinner- and came over to say hi. Noticing my Florida tag, their friendly banter soon turned to strange looks and some other uncomfortable things. I really had no idea what was going on, but being outnumbered in an unfamiliar town all I could do is stand my ground as much as I possibly could and hope for the best. Running away was never an option for me. I promptly informed the several folks who were once friendly and quickly transferred to weird that I was simply passing through and they wouldn’t be seeing much of me in their one-horse town. I always learn things by listening, and out of the short education that I derived from this encounter I realized people from my home state would not be trusted due to a conflict between a couple of warring factions in the motorcycle community. I disavowed any knowledge of this alleged conflict and bid the group adieu. As I found my way back to the interstate, I realized that my mission had been accomplished, and that people need to step away from the continuous negative legacy and move forward into the future. My gypsy tour of the west was concluded with the fact that I was just a visitor in “Berdoo” county and I should not return without a back-up plan. It was fun visiting for a minute, but the un-friendly attitude that I received was all I needed to experience. I’ve been thrown out of better places than this! Heading back east, I felt a more accepted and comforting state of mind and I remembered the warmth of the place that I currently live. Not that California isn’t nice, it’s just that everyone there is stereotyped to the particular extent that would cause certain people to be uncomfortable. I was one of them but I always say “never look back.” Somewhere around Oklahoma I slipped into the comfort of my patch and continued the journey back to my homeland. Bad attitudes be damned, I just look forward to the next trip which is coming up soon. When I see you all out there say a kind word if you will, and remember that the road is treacherous and people sometimes are un-predictable. Until next month, “Speed Safely!” Craven BORNTORIDE.COM | BTR 69

Last week at my Ride Like a Pro class a student asked how long I’d been teaching the Motor Officer techniques. I replied, about 16 years. The student stated, “Wow, I bet you’ve seen it all.” I thought about that for a moment and decided he was right. I have seen it all when it comes to the crazy weird and just plain dumb things people do when trying to learn to ride a motorcycle with skill and confidence. Keep in mind, the course I offer is an advanced skills course and I advertise it as such. To take advantage of the techniques demonstrated in my course, one must have a good handle on the basic skills. In my opinion, that means you know how to start off on a hill without stalling or rolling backward, you have a fairly good understanding of counter steering and you can make a U-turn in 40 feet or less. In addition, you can stop quickly from 20 mph in a straight line. I think you’d agree that those are pretty basic skills. When someone comes to me with these basic skills, they leave the class three to four times a better rider than when they started. The worst of the riders will be twice as good as when they started the class. And all the students will know how to use the techniques to their fullest extent and have the ability to continue to improve their skills. Are there people who I can’t help? Yes. The quitters and the dangerous. As an example, a year or so ago, I had a couple who flew in from another state and rented two of my bikes for the class. Both the man and the woman claimed to own Road Kings and both stated they had been riding for years. I put the male rider on a Sportster Low and told BTR 72 | BORNTORIDE.COM

him to cruise around the parking lot, make a few stops and starts, and ride around the service road that goes around the parking lot. This gives the rider a chance to get familiar with the bike and allows me to evaluate their skill level. It took this guy 12 tries to take off from a stop without stalling. This of course is not a good sign. Once he got going at about 10 mph, he rode across the parking lot and attempted to turn onto the service road. This turn can be done easily at 35 mph but this rider felt that 10 mph was too fast, so he let off the throttle then tried to come to a stop by using both feet instead of the brakes. He then stalled the bike because he didn’t pull the clutch, got it started, then ducked walked it into the left turn. That was enough for me. There was no way this guy could ride in a class with eight others as he would endanger himself and anyone within 200 feet of him. I had to refund his money and advised him to go back to an MSF Beginner class to gain basic skills. Thankfully he took my advice well and agreed with me. It was now his wife’s turn. While she was able to take off from a stop without stalling and she could use the brakes to stop, she absolutely could not turn the motorcycle. I asked her to try to make the tightest circle she felt comfortable with. That turned out to be somewhere over 400 feet! How much over 400 feet? I can’t tell you because the parking lot is only 400 feet wide and that wasn’t wide enough for her, as she had to stop once she got to the edge of the lot at the fence line. She then backed up, got the bike pointed straight ahead and road all

the way across to the other side of the lot until she again ran out of room. I decided to allow one of my instructors to try to work with her privately and far away from the other students. After an hour of one on one instruction she had some idea of how to use the clutch and throttle and was able to weave through a few cones set at a huge 15 feet apart. She then decided she had learned enough and promptly quit. No amount of coaxing from me would change her mind. I advised her also to retake the beginner course once she returned home. She stated she’d been riding for years and didn’t need a beginner course. Well, you know the old saying, you can lead them to water, etc.… Had this woman continued the class, I’m sure she would have left with a good understanding of basic motorcycle rider skills and she would at the very least know what advanced riding techniques were and how to use those techniques with some practice. But the fact that she quit after just an hour tells me she’s not the kind of person who really wants to be a skillful rider or at least, she’s certainly not willing to put in the time it would take to get better. I also offered both her and her husband to walk with me and watch and listen to the coaching tips I give the other riders as they progressed through the course. Unfortunately they declined, got in their car and drove away. On the way out of the parking lot she drove over the curb. Continued from pg 14 Weekend! “As the founder of the Quinton Aaron Foundation, I am always amazed to see which people will step up to the plate and make a difference in the lives of people in need. My executive director is a life-long rider of motorcycles and a great representation of the network of Harley-Davidson motorcycle riders. I am honored to have him as my director, and looking forward to becoming a part of such an incredible group of giving individuals.” Quinton will be a guest at Scooter’s Saloon’s Grand Opening Weekend! He will sign autographs and if you bring in your copy of The Blind Side, he will be happy to sign that as well! Ron Galletti of Born To Ride shared with me his excitement in working with Russ, Scooter, Preston, Gary, and Richard.

“Scooter’s Saloon in Brandon is a new venture! The staff at Scooter’s have a lot of background in being successful business people – from food and beverages to people and marketing – it’s going to be a great success for Harley-Davidson and Scooters to come together. The quality of what they have to offer is amazing! We’re excited about the Friday night Bike Night and will be working with them in promoting this.” “Scooter’s Saloon grand opening is going to coincide with Harley¬-Davidson’s huge tent sale. You only do a grand opening ONE TIME! So this is going to be big! We are tying this in with our 1,000 episode party. Not only is there going to be a Grand Opening at Scooter’s Saloon, it’s also going to be a celebration for Born To Ride. We want everybody to come out and be interviewed for Born To Ride TV. We want to captivate this grand opening party by having you a part of it! We want to hear YOUR stories about Born To Ride and the 20 years we’ve been in business! It’s really about you and the biker community. Together, we will magnify the great things

bikers do at this great complex. I wish these guys all the success in the world!” Ending our great conversation, Scooter was able to sum up the weekend; “This is a destination restaurant. The steer, the fish, the wagon, the Harley dealership – this is a place you won’t see anywhere else. It’s well thought-out. Who has a bike night with a full liquor bar and restaurant? Americana is what we are working on. With Scooters and Harley, it goes hand in hand.” So there you have it! February 20 – 22 is a weekend you don’t want to miss! Born To Ride is celebrating 1,000 television shows, Brandon Harley-Davidson is have a HUGE tent sale, and Scooter’s Saloon is welcoming YOU to their Grand Opening Celebration. Spyke & Mike I hope y’all enjoyed the mild weather and did a lot of riding in the last month, my BTR friends. Both Gibtown and Thunder by the Bay were off the chain! If we’re lucky, Old Man Winter will stay away giving us more pleasant temperatures and no rainfall for Daytona. Mike stumbles past the sliding glass doors and onto the lanai. He turns to me and says, “Hell yeah! That’s why we live here. I’ve grown old and can’t endure the cold, among other things. Speaking of which Spyke, take a moment from your basking in the pool and jot down my thoughts about aging. I can barely remember them and you’re typing is much faster than mine. Also, because the biggest lie I tell myself is that I don’t need to write it down, I’ll remember it. That just goes to prove at my age ‘getting lucky’ means walking into another room and remembering what I went in there for.” I squawk, “Then tell me what DID you come out here for?” Mike scratches his head, turns, and goes back inside. He returns with that lost look on his face, walks up to me on my float and says, “You’ve got me! I guess I’m not ‘getting lucky’ today. So, what were we talking about Spyke?” “OK jello for brains,” I cackle, “it was about your age related ponderings.” Mikes’ eyes light up, “Oh yeah! As I was doing laundry the other day I thought to myself, wouldn’t it be great if I could climb into the dryer, turn it on high heat for 10 minutes and come out wrinkle free and three sizes smaller.” I cover my head with one wing and mutter, “You must’ve been three sheets into the wind that day!” Mike bellows, “Now Spyke, you know I won’t put my bedding out in the backyard to dry. I don’t want the neighbors to see my stained sheets.” I just close my eyes and cackle, “Keep going O’ wise man.” Mike starts again, “Old age comes at a really bad time. I was just learning from all my mistakes and now my body will not let me perform like I need it to. And I wish everybody would quit telling me I need anger management. I just need society to stop pissing me off. My people skills are just fine. It’s my tolerance to idiots that needs work. And I don’t have gray hair because of it. I’ve got wisdom highlights growing in. I remember back when I was a child and nap time was punishment. Now I look forward to it ‘cause it feels like a mini vacation from reality and all the lunatics. So, why is it that people say ‘I slept like a baby’ when babies wake up almost every two hours?” I stop typing and under my breath mumble, “Even duct tape can’t

fix stupid but it will muffle your voice.” Mike squints at me and says, “What was that Spyke? Oh Lord grant me the strength to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and friends who will post bail for me after ringing your neck Spyke when I finally snap!” I start typing again and say, “OK, OK, keep your train of thought on the two tracks in front of you. Let’s hear more of your elderly enlightenments.” Mike blurts out, “Okay my feathered freak, I’ve yet to figure out these last few. Maybe you can help me. First, why does twinkle twinkle little star and the alphabet song have the same tune to it. Second, if Jimmy cracks corn and no one cares, why is there a song about it? Last but not least, If Wile E. Coyote had enough money to pay for all that ACME crap, why didn’t he just go out and buy dinner?” I stand back from the keyboard and squawk, “I’ll tell you why. First, for all you burnt brain cell people it’s supposed to make it easy for you to recite the alphabet when you’ve got a cop’s flashlight in your eyes. Second, many people cared ‘cause Eminem and 50 Cent made a number one rap song out of it. Third, if Wile E. Coyote did just buy dinner, my friend the road runner wouldn’t get to ‘beep beep’ at stupid animals or people like him and you!” Mike turns and almost falls into the pool. I screech, “Beep beep old man!” He gains his footing and I see that strange look come over him. His head tilts to one side, his mouth opens slightly, and he begins staring into space. About that time the voices inside his head have given him a deranged idea and I’m afraid, very afraid. I climb down from the table. Mike comes back, “If a bird squawks underwater can anybody hear her?” That’s my cue to begin running across the lanai and away from him. “It’s OK Spyke,” Mike mumbles. “I’m not evil, just slightly bent, very twisted, and in need of heavy medication that only comes from saddle time in the wind.” Cool! I squawk as I head to the garage and wait for him on the scoot. He backs the Fat Bird out, fires it up and gets my wings in the wind and its wheels down the road. With wind whipping through his hair, he tilts his head to one side and a smile appears on the ol’e man’s face … the medication is working. SPYKE BORNTORIDE.COM | BTR 79
