OFF-RAMP DIVER

You are riding along an urban freeway, in the far right lane. Just as you approach an off-ramp, a car in the lane to your left dives in front of you, braking hard to make the offramp at the last possible moment. You have very little room to brake or swerve, and a crash may be imminent. Strategy: When you see an off-ramp ahead, glance around you and evaluate the situation. Do you see any cars around you that might exit? Are you doing anything that might cause other drivers to expect you to exit? Since you are riding along in what is the exit lane, other drivers may assume that you are going to exit as well—an assumption that might affect their movements. Off-ramps (and onramps) are prime locations for vehicular conflicts. When approaching a ramp, it is often a good idea to move out of the exit/entrance lane. Take steps to avoid riding in the blind spots of cars traveling around you. In this situation, the driver might not have known that you were even between him and the exit, if you were in his blind spot. For more information go to www.msf-usa.org

Hayley Colina’s Salute t

This past month, I had the opportunity to share the EQ vision and lifestyle at Ghost Rider Saloon and Panama City Beach Harley-Davidson. In life you have a choice of trying to fit in and get people’s approval, or stand out—head raised high and be yourself. Let your uniqueness shine through. There will always be people who criticize and judge you. Don’t hate or be bitter, just wish them well and let God and Karma take care of the rest. Go live your life! My first stop was Ghost Rider Saloon in Ocala, FL with the crew from Born To Ride. BTR 14 | BORNTORIDE.COM

Peggy, our hostess, was wonderful. I set up at the BTR van, autographed the magazine, posed for pictures, and handed out signed posters. I had the opportunity to sit with several revelers and talk about past speaking engagements and where I’ll be next. It turned out to be an enjoyable time; many of the guys took an interest in what we are doing with EQ Women Succeed and wished us well. My next stop was Panama City Beach H-D; I was the welcoming speaker for Panama City Beach Harley-Davidson’s Ladies Garage

Party. PCBHD answers their phones with “the world’s friendliest Harley dealership.” I have to admit they really made us feel special. Several of the women had spouses who rode and were there to see about taking the controls themselves. If you haven’t attended a Ladies Garage Party, I seriously recommend you do. The two most active stations that were visited were the make-up table and the jump start motorcycle. Did I mention the ‘Men of Harley’ Fashion Show? (Nuff said!) I had the opportunity to speak with many of the women who attended and was

not amazed by their supportive response because most women want to live their dreams; they just don’t know how to do it, or they are too concerned about what others think. It is time to live the EQ Lifestyle! You only get one life … what are you waiting for? Let go of this need for approval and create whatever you want in life! Focus on what really matters and more forward. You have all the power within you to succeed and you need no one’s approval to do so. Do not waste another second take action today. TAKE THE CHALLENGE

Take this important first step today! No excuses. Go to a bike shop and send me a picture with you on your dream motorcycle. If a motorcycle is not on your list go take a picture with whatever is on your list. The point is for you to feel, see, and smell it being yours. This is an important first step. Send your photos to: Hayley@EQWS.org I invite you to come check out for our upcoming events (Born To Ride’s Women’s World: An EQ Lifestyle). Women’ Susan Hurst – Writer, Author, Publisher and member of the Born To Ride Family! I was asked to write about a person who many of you have met—or at least—have read her articles here in Born To Ride. Coming out of my writing hibernation in order to complete this honor for Born To Ride, I am thrilled to share with you a story about Susan Hurst and some good news she’s working on this year! Susan has been a professional writer for many, many years. Her motorcycling life started over 35 years ago in upstate New York. She is probably one of the most humble and creative people I have ever met. Thankfully, she agreed to meet up with me at The White Elephant in Englewood to share what she’s been up to! Sitting on the deck, sipping on a sweet iced tea, I waited patiently for her to walk through the door. As if the timing couldn’t have been more perfect, in walks this tall woman with long blonde hair, who happily greets people she passes as she comes onto the deck. An easy smile greets me along with a powerful hug and sincere thanks for my being here. Just having a few seconds with her, I’m already sensing a good interview is going to commence as well as a new friendship! How did you come on board with Born To Ride? Smiling and clapping her hands with joy, she said, “Oh my! That was many years ago—I think 2007 was when I met Ron Galletti at an event in Bradenton. My husband, Johnny Martin, saw Ron taking video and photos throughout this event. Johnny made it a point to let Ron know I was a professional writer and published author and that Ron needed to meet me. I was embarrassed, I must admit, but honored to meet Ron since I was a devoted reader of Born To Ride magazine. We spent some BTR 18 | BORNTORIDE.COM

I wasn’t going to stop something that brought me great joy just because people weren’t taking the time to get to know me or spend time with me in order to know who I really was. For many—especially women—I was a threat to them.” In 1990, taking her passion for writing and her desire to spread a positive light on women motorcyclists, she wrote her first book, “Women and Motorcycling.” It was a collection of stories, photos, and demographic information about women motorcyclists. From that endeavor, Susan embarked on a second publication, “Women and Motorcycling – The Early Years.” This was a book about the women pioneers of the early 1900s. “My second book was a best seller. I had it reprinted six times because I couldn’t keep up with the demand!” In time talking together about my background addition to selling out of these books, Susan and my two books that I wrote and published. She came up to Susan and said, “Are you the embarrasses easily when you talk about one that just rode in on that huge pink and her and her amazing accomplishments as a black motorcycle?” Smiling, Susan nodded biker, writer, and publisher. But truth be told, and said, “Yes, that was me!” The guy just she knows her stuff and knows it well! shook his head and said, “I can’t believe Sipping her drink and contemplating my that you rode that here. That’s a pretty big question as to WHY she ventured into book bike for a girl like you.” For most (including me), a sarcastic retort would be in order, but publishing, Susan said, “My goal was to Susan politely said (with that beautiful smile be the one to tell the stories of the women pioneers who made many sacrifices for us to of hers), “If you’d like, I would be honored be where we are today in the motorcycling to take you for a ride down Beach Road. I have met some fascinating people and am always looking forward to meeting new friends! I take my role very seriously with Born To Ride because our standards are very high. We set the bar to a point where many try to reach it but can’t. I love my Born To Ride family and am proud to be a part of their successes!” The good news Susan enthusiastically shared with me is her new book! Sitting at the edge of her chair, she animatedly explained, “I’m very excited to be writing my third book! This one is called, ‘Women and Motorcycling – Past, Present, and Future.’ I’m currently looking for stories and photos of women motorcyclists from all walks of life. Is there an interesting story that someone wants to share about a particular lady biker? If so, I want to know! The couple shared with her how they met via motorcycles and that their parents’ were also avid motorcyclists back in the day. Susan politely listened to their stories and was thankful to them for sharing. She is a remarkable woman. Her love of people is evident in how she handles complete strangers—always smiling, welcoming, and interested in everyone she comes in contact with. A Place FOR GIRLS Preventing Delinquency Since 1957

As the Boys Ranch grew in size and structure, praise for the success of the program spread across Florida. Everyone knew the Sheriffs’ strong commitment to these deserving boys, but what about the girls? The need was clear but the path was not. Fortunately, the sister of Pinellas County Sheriff Don Genung had carefully watched his efforts to help develop the Florida Sheriffs Boys Ranch. With his help, she approached the Sunshine State Women’s Chamber of Commerce to enlist their support to raise money for a “sister” program to the Boys Ranch. The group agreed and immediately

launched a focused fundraising effort to build a place for wayward girls. Their tenacity and determination soon paid off. In 1969, the Sheriffs of Florida formally adopted the idea of establishing the Florida Sheriffs Girls Villa. A search committee was formed, and by 1971 they had secured a beautiful piece of property formerly known as Peace River Park. Through the efforts of Polk County Sheriff Monroe Brennan and other community leaders, the Mobil Corporation, the City of Bartow, and Polk County Officials agreed to a 99-year lease of over 125 acres of land for $1 per year. The local community

in Bartow responded in a very positive way through the Bartow Classic, a longstanding gala event to support the Girls Villa. Groundbreaking for the new building began at once, and soon the campus was overflowing with deserving girls in need of a good home. Over the years, the Florida Sheriffs Youth Villa (formerly known as the Girls Villa) has grown to include five cottages, and Activity Center, Learning Center, Pool, Chapel, Towey Administration Building, Izard Barn, and other facilities to help young women become productive members of our community.

Joe Simpson is a man that has passion, talent, and a constant dream to be the best in what he does at Jaw Droppin’ Customs AND 1st Response Towing. I had the pleasure of speaking with Joe about his business and his exciting Open House on May 30! Joe’s been in business for 10 years now. “We are a body shop, a tow shop, and a repair shop. My dad and I started the towing company. I’ve always been a car guy and a motorcycle guy. When we started getting a fleet of tow trucks, we always had each one customized. So, we always did all of the designing in-house and would send out work to be completed. After dealing with multiple shops and not having very good customer service, we started evolving into doing everything in-house. We pretty much are set up to do anything. Everything is under one roof!” I asked Joe if I brought my bagger up to him and wanted: new, custom paint job, apes,

pin-striping, custom seat, and a bigger engine, he can do it all? “We have full service. We build bikes. I have my own 30” bagger. I’ve built and sold many baggers over the months.” I wanted to get deep into Joe’s creative mind and asked him what drives him in his design work. “Well, I like to put out new ideas ahead of everybody else. We have a lot going on in the shop right now. The design work is important to us as is the quality of the work we do.” Speaking of design work, Joe and his team will be unveiling a new member of the 1st Response Tow Truck Fleet! “We started out as a towing company. In 10 years, we’ve had 24 tow trucks. Every one of them has had their own original style. I’ve got kids and 10 years ago when they were younger, we had different theme-trucks—like super heroes. As we got more involved in the biker community, we did a lot of skulls and things like that. A lot of our trucks have been

featured in other magazines. One of the last trucks we did last year was called the Jaw Dropper.” “A lot of people do the pink for breast cancer awareness. I wanted to be different and do something for ALL the cancers out there—bringing awareness to each one of them. I wanted to keep it original and different. The paint job is a candy purple. We’ve been advertising it for about three months now. We have about 100 names on the truck now; from folks that have passed away from cancer or names of those that have beaten cancer—or are still fighting cancer. Their names are all over the truck.” This hits close to home for Joe. “I had two grandmothers that fought cancer. I had one grandmother that had breast cancer twice. They are no longer with us but this is my way of giving back to the community. When we do our Open House on May 30, all of the proceeds raised throughout the day will be going towards those in need in our BORNTORIDE.COM | BTR 37

community.” Let’s jump right into the Open House and what will be in store for everyone that’s attending! “This is going to be a familyfriendly event where there will be food, sodas, water, and music. There will be a car and motorcycle show where all donations will go to our non-profit. In addition there will be awards and raffles! The doors will be open to the shop so people can stop in and see what we do. We will also have the unveiling of our cancer-awareness truck and some of our other tow trucks as well!” Joe mentioned that the new cancer awareness tow truck will be donating a certain percentage of every tow job they do to this foundation charity. “I’m really big on cancer awareness and the focal point of making sure the monies go to people that need it. I’m not into finding a charity where a corporation is running it and a lot of people’s hands are in the pot. I want the money to go directly to people that need it—100% of all the proceeds! I’ve found a good church where the pastor is someone I trust completely. My pastor will be making sure the money goes to families that need the help. I want to see this fundraising goes on for a long time! If you know of someone that is going through cancer, has survived cancer, or has passed from cancer, their name can go on this truck!” You can call the shop at 727-535-9999 for more information on putting names on the truck. Family is very important to Joe. “I was in the automotive towing company for a long time working for someone else. I got tired of working for others and asked my dad if he wanted to go in with me on opening this BTR 38 | BORNTORIDE.COM

company. Within two years we had nine trucks. It just kinda exploded. I was 25 when I started this company. I’ve always had the fancy trucks. We were called the “Bad Boys of Towing” for a long time. My dad, Pops, works here every day. He’s in his 60s and runs the truck if needed and my girlfriend, Jessica, has worked here for the last couple years. I have three kids; my oldest, Elijah, is 15 and he’s already working in the shop! I also am a proud dad to Gabriel who is 14, and my youngest, Chloe, who is 7. My mom, Betty, is a big part of my success as well!” The shop is located at 5060 110th Ave North in beautiful Clearwater. “We are five minutes from Quaker Steak and Lube. There will be lots of parking across the street and next door to our shop. There is even a big plaza ½ block from the shop for parking as well.” Joe is currently working on a special project. “We’ve got a ‘64 mustang, one owner car. Her husband bought the car brand new. Then he was sent to fight in the Vietnam war. About 10 years ago, he passed away and the car has been sitting in the garage all this time. She wanted to have the car redone. We are in the process of doing some things to this car that she isn’t aware of; we are going to put a mural of her husband inside the trunk lid. This car will be at the shop the day of the Open House. It won’t be complete, but it will be there for everyone to see. We expect to get this completed early summer.” This Open House will be successful due to the Sponsors that are stepping up and being a part of this day! “We have some great sponsors: Ben’s Paint Supply and PPG—the

company we get our paint from. They both donated to the cancer awareness truck and didn’t charge us. Fran Haasch Law Offices is involved and Thomas Signs is providing all the names for the cancer awareness truck. We are still working on getting some more items as well for our Open House raffles.” Another gem I uncovered in my conversation with Joe was that Pops is a skilled and talented woodworker! “We make custom furniture as well and will be having a bench to raffle off at the Open House as well! My dad, Pops, does a lot of wood working and does it all by hand. We started keeping old tailgates from vehicles. We take these tailgates and make unique benches out of them. It’s a full tailgate that is used as the back rest for the bench! One of these will be raffled off at the Open House!” In ending our excellent conversation, I asked Joe for some parting words on his business and ideology for his continued success. “The biggest thing I’ve learned since starting this business is expect the hurdles; don’t sweat the imitators. Put 110% effort in, and love what you do. We all love what we do, and there’s no doubt 110% is given 24 hours a day 7 days a week. And imitators well, what can we say if they want to be you? Just stay original and you’ll always be ahead of the competition.”

Thank you, Joe, for the great conversation! All of us at Born To Ride magazine look forward to seeing you at this Open House on May 30! Susan Hurst

On the outskirts of Watkinsville, Georgia, a quaint southern town just south of Athens and UGA, Boxerworks-Service , led by charismatic Nathan Mende and his team of dedicated craftsmen are turning heads as they turn out BeemerGlides, fully-functional retro-‘whatever old style bikes you would like.’ Born in Teaneck, NJ in the late ‘40s, Nathan’s father worked part-time at a local garage, wherein resided eight Slash Two BMWs; the owner, Nathan’s dad and six compadres would annually ship all eight bikes to a remote location, fly out and have a nice rideabout home. In the middle ‘60s he came upon a 1965 BMW R69S, the then top-of-the-line BMW motorrad (i.e. motorized wheels) with a stunning 46 BTR 44 | BORNTORIDE.COM

hp. Nathan used his $500 nest egg and borrowed the remaining $300 to purchase the machine. Without realizing it, Nathan’s formative years branded him with the BMW marque. Accordingly, he took employment at Hawk Cycles BMW motorcycle dealer in Athens OH—and later, Freeman Cycles in Beverly, Massachusetts, said to be the original BMW motorcycle dealer in the US. Nathan left the northeast to begin his adventures in 1967. After working around the world in the oil industry, Nathan moved to Vermont for a time; despite the wicked winters, he was a year-‘round motorcyclist. Next stopover was Charleston, SC, where he began a part-time BMW repair business in his garage. Six years later, middle

Georgia became his home and again his BMW repair, resto, and customization trade took off. The original Boxerworks-Service was in a building on Nathan’s many rural acres and later moved into Watkinsville. The current business is in a new building on the Greenville Highway. The early Georgia days included working as a BMW motorrad tech at the Athens BMW auto dealer, who became a ‘dual dealer,’ handling both auto and bikes. The dealer sent Nathan to become certified as a technician, while at the same time BMW Corporate was suing him for using ‘BMW’ in the name of his home-based business, hence the name-change to ‘BoxerworksService,’ a modification Nathan never

regretted. The dual-dealership did not last, and Boxerworks-Service became Nathan’s fulltime pursuit; the first employee was hired. In 2005, the soon-to-be-legendary Dean Graham joined Boxerworks. Dean was a BMW owner with little BMW experience but deep familiarity with a variety of the needed skills, including electrician. His motorcyclewiring handiwork could be displayed in an art gallery—welding, pipe-fitting, gas and diesel mechanicals and more. Today, Nathan says one of his biggest concerns is keeping Dean challenged; Dean builds motors, both stockers and full-blown BMW Airhead Boxer hot-rod mills, an anomaly in the Beemer world. He does the finishing work on a ‘Glide bike after all the parts are in place and is the fussy drivability quality-control guy. When a ‘Glide leaves Watkinsville, the chassis and running gear are better than Spandau (the Berlin factor) ever imagined. While BMWs and other Euro-marques are BoxerworksService’s specialty they will repair virtually any make of motorcycle. Where did the concept for the BeemerGlide arise? About 10 years ago, BMW restoguru Todd Rasmussen built the first BeemerGlide; Nathan was able to buy it from Rasmussen, whereupon his team disassembled it, reengineered many parts and components with an eye to making BTR 46 | BORNTORIDE.COM

it easier to manufacture in numbers. The ability to sell ‘Glides in kit-form was also an objective. The ‘Glide is now designed as a single multi-style frame that supports several retro-styles including the look of the wartime Harley-Davidson WLA. The U.S. Army also commissioned H-D to design and build an opposed flat-twin, shaft-drive motorcycle, the H-D XA for the benefit of the maintenance-free shaft drive. One thousand were produced, few survive. The ‘Glide pays homage to this small piece of U.S. Army history. About this time, a British subject, Barbadian James Vann, saw a picture of the BeemerGlide and something ignited within. A middle-aged fellow, James migrated to the US and came by for a visit with Mr. Mende; “I can sell these things. I can build them, also.” Before this pivotal event, Boxerwork’s creative division did a diverse bit of everything one-off but did not move into the realm of really attractive and emotionallymoving restoration-conversions that can be practical, relatively easy, and economical. ‘Glides can be both repaired with OEM BMW parts, copious aftermarket alternatives, and the weaker components of 1970s engineering. Nathan, himself a skilled just-abouteverything operator/technician, and his team of overlapping specialists do all the

work in-house with these exceptions: The original BMW frame goes to the contractor that built the ‘Glide frame-jig; two-thirds of the fame is retained, including the fork-head and down tubes that are stamped with the VIN. New tubing and gussets are added to lower the seat, and accept a variety of fenders, tanks, seats, shocks, and such. The only other contracted work for a ‘Glide is paint and upholstery. James is project manager, responsible for specs, progress, sheet-metal, and final assembly. Dean does motors to spec, from mild 55 hp-70 hp stockers to full-on streetable carb-breathing two-valve push-rod monsters that have reached over 90 hp. BMW’s Boxer engine has a low torque-to-horsepower ratio—lots of torque in relation peak horsepower, making drivability very pleasant and predicable—and nicely quick while on the power band which includes most of the tach. Are Hayabusas worried? No. However, Bird-riders’ neck, buttocks, arms, eyes, wrists, hands and knee-joints will be painfully worried long before the ‘Glide needs to find a gas station. For the Stoplight Open, get a ‘Glide with Final Drive gears for a sidecar or other lowHP model to enjoy two-gear throttle-only wheelies. Horsepower sells bikes—Torque satisfies riders. Customers can specify a number of retrostyles, including the original BeemerGlide,

or an XA that was bobbed after the war, or a Board Track bike might be your desire … or Flat-tracker, Beach Cruiser, Drag Bike or whatever else you and James can imagine. It will certainly be a one—off. ‘Glides all feature blacked-out engine and running gear to keep the focus on the entire aesthetics package and not just the funny-looking motor. The battery is actually the familiar oil tank, and other such mods make the creation match your old memories as you ride around comfortably and reliably on, well, relatively modern hard-parts. Want to try it yourself? Whether you are an experienced Airhead owner—let’s depart to

head specialist well-known in the highperformance auto and motorcycle world. Len Hoffman’s machine shop, adjacent to Nathan, is as large as Boxerworks and chock-full of precision metal working machinery. The full menu is available, from simple valve-grinds up to giant valves, bench-flowed ports and shaped combustion chambers. Other fields where Boxerworks is active include dual-sport machines, up to big Adventure models, competitive tire pricing, service on nearly all late-model BMWs, Ducatis, sidecar fabrication, installation and drivability. One Boxerworks commissions was an Airhead sidecar build liveried up

describe the term; ‘Airhead’ is the informal name for BMW motorcycles beginning with the original 1923 R32 up to the last fully air-cooled 1995 R100s. Modern Era Airheads cover 1975-1995. Airheads believe in simplicity, thus: “Airheads never break, and when they do, you can fix’em with a pocket knife.” In 1983, BMW began to introduce other engine configurations, none of which were totally reliant on air-flow for engine cooling. Airheads are known for reliability, total parts availability, and ease of maintenance and roadside repairs. But back to you, the erstwhile at-homebuilder: The assembly process for the home-garage builder, who may supply donor components while relying on James to acquire the remainder, is straight-forward. The individual builder can specify how much of the build is done by Boxerworks and then enjoy the thrill of completing a work of moto-art oneself. Even more pleasant will be the total cost of such a build. If a big motor is spec’ed, Boxerwork’s neighbor is a cylinder-

in University of Florida—Blue and Orange colors. The owner bravely rode it daily in Athens, home of arch-rival UGA. Speed Channel personality Dave DeSpain is a near neighbor and relies on Boxerworks-Service to maintain his eclectic fleet. BMW dealers, most of whom no longer work on Airheads, send owners to Boxerworks, which has the full range of special-tools, tech manuals, and memo—and even better, combined decades of experience with these venerable power plants and drive-trains. What’s next? James is collecting parts for a ‘Big Front Disc(s) bike; three new frames are in production, and there are orders to fill, some from Asia. In process is a new swingarm/driveshaft tunnel design using a single shock. Nathan, the face of Boxerworks, wants to change that. James now rides herd on the creative and diverse personalities; “It’s an easy job because we’re really family,” Nathan noted. “I take a month off each year now, to ride the US with my girlfriend.” Mr. Mende rides a Nathanized BMW G/S with

few OEM parts except castings and frame. “I foresee a ‘Glide Rally in 5 or 10 years with over 50 ‘Glides in attendance!” The team (ahem, ‘family’) is cohesive— maintaining and growing both the size and core values of Boxerworks as Nathan backs off his own throttle a bit; “We’re customerfocused, do quality guaranteed work, always come in on budget, communicate with the customer profusely to avoid surprises along the build. Because the best surprise is no surprise on the bill and a big surprise for the owner of a new one-off and personalized ‘Glide.”

The only thing I know about Ten-Pin Bowling is that it’s a favorite pastime of both Homer Simpson and Fred Flintstone— apart from that, nada, zilch, nothing at all. Except that it seems to involve consuming huge amounts of beer, and by grossly overweight individuals dressed in loud shirts that look as if they’ve been ironed over a beach ball. And while I do know that bowling was an intrinsic part of the Cohen brother’s cult movie, ‘The Big Lebowski,’ a film I have enjoyed many times, I have to say that it has inspired me to roll a big ball at skittles ... uh never! Apparently the marbled paint finish on Brittany Ellis’ CBR1000 is called ‘Bowling Ball,’ (something else I didn’t know), as it closely resembles the finish on the balls bowled by Homer and Fred types at ten BTR 54 | BORNTORIDE.COM

wooden pins in a bowling alley on Saturday nights, the machinery of which is almost universally made by AMF, (American Machine & Foundry), the same company who owned Harley-Davidson from 1969 to 1981. Honda however, were never owned by a company who made balls, they did make a few balls-ups though — like the CX Turbo, the oval piston NS750, the Hondamatic and other stuff that was about as much use as Haitian hurricane insurance. But not with the CBR1000, the full one liter successor to venerable 900 FireBlade, that still cuts like a knife. Abe Pagan has been building top class custom sportbikes under the Syndicate Custom Sportbike banner for the past few years, and while Abe’s never been a high

profile roller like Roaring Toyz, Abe has never-the-less turned out some showwinning bikes and has graduated from working in the garage behind his house to a workshop unit just up the road from the Prison Farm in Ocala, Florida. Abe is also willing to work within a tight budget and allow the bike’s owner to do some of the work to keep the costs reasonable, and this was the deal struck when Josh Ellis wanted to build a new bike for his wife, Brittany, to replace her current 600 ride. While Abe had a specially designed set of billet wheels cut and fabricated a shorter than usual swingarm, (still way longer than a stock CBR1000RR - but not as long as his customers usually demand for a custom sportbike), complete with jackshaft to offset

the drive chain to the 10-inch wide wheel and huge 310 mm Vee Rubber Monster tire, Josh took the plastic away for painting. After the Bowling Ball custom paint was completed by Jeff at Paint Pros in Jacksonville, (better known as stunt rider ‘Ponis’), the bodywork was returned to Abe at SCS who then painted the black panels, gold leaf logos and pinstripes. Abe also laid on the gold lacquer finish over the polished aluminum frame, swingarm, wheels, forks etc. Quite a stunning look that compliments the gold leaf and pinstripes perfectly— and was serendipitous as the original plan was to have the frame, wheels et al chromed. But the frame proved to be too big for the chrome plater’s tank, so Abe tried some gold lacquer over the polished alloy and came up with the resultant translucent finish. The 2006 vintage CBR1000 motor needed a little work, so while the cylinder head was off it was decided to have the ports reshaped and polished and the valves seats recut. A set of performance cams with adjustable sprockets seemed like a good idea, as was the addition of a BMC race spec air filter and a Power Commander lll with a Dynojet multifunction street and race map. A Jardine RT1 exhaust system with a carbon fiber twin pipe underseat box was heat wrapped for a racy look and fitted with modified heat shields. Gold anodized Pro-Bolts and painted clutch and alternator covers completed the engine ensemble along with a Viper remote starter. To get that low-down and dirty race-ready stance the front-end was pulled down with a Schnitz drag race strap to match the threeinch lowered rear suspension, Galfer brake discs were fitted all-round, the stock master cylinders were dressed with custom caps and dangerous looking Cycle Pirate levers—and the ‘dangerous’ look continued with spiked fasteners as sharp as your mother-in-law’s tongue on the fairing and front mudguard. And this being Florida, where there are almost as many alligators as there are illegal immigrants, a ‘gator skin seat was an obvious choice, however here in the Sunshine State it’s against the law to shoot alligators … fence jumpers though have to watch out. A Very Happy Mother’s Day to all the Mom’s reading this. “Call Your Mom on Mother’s Day”

Integrity and Quality = Pride Cycles This week, we’re in tropical Tampa, Florida, to introduce you to an extraordinary man, Anthony Bevilacqua, of Pride Cycles and Powersports. And PRIDE is what Anthony is all about; Pride in his work, Pride in his custom service, and Pride in the elite quality of his service. You see, Anthony is a motorcycle service specialist and his continuing passion for making a machine perform and be the best it can be is a testament to his almost 20 years of dedication and experience. Anthony’s clients call him the “horse whisperer” of motorcycle repair. Ever since he started his business, he has advertised solely in Born To Ride magazine and by word-of-mouth in the biker community. We at Born To Ride are proud of this relationship with this committed young man. And we are proud to present his story! “I would just like to let everyone know what is happening here at Pride Cycles for 2015. Basically, it’s Allison and I here now. We run the whole shop. Allison runs the front, everybody coming in, and looks up parts. I’m in the back working on all the machines.

I basically want everybody to understand the level of service we are providing. I’ve been in this industry for 19 years and have been in business for seven years with Pride Cycles. It’s nice to be back with a one-toone level with the machines and with the clients. You know, I consider this a very elite level of service. It’s very exclusive. I can only do so much with me being here by myself; it allows me to do what’s required to get these machines serviced and repaired properly. The clients absolutely love it! And myself; this is how I love to do it—a high level of service and a one-on-one with our clients. This isn’t readily available these days in this industry.” “As I’ve said, I have 19 years combined in this industry and one way, shape, or form, you still learn every day. That’s what it’s all about. But, if you look around here, there is one tool box; that’s mine.” “What I feel that we offer is something that nobody else offers. I’m not trying to make comparisons on anything of what’s better or what’s worse. It’s just that everything out there is flat-rate based. There is a time limit on everything. Here, there is no time limit.

I take my time. That’s the level of service we’re providing. So, when you are able to take the time and go over the WHOLE bike instead of fixing just one certain piece and getting out of there, everything gets done! Everything gets inspected. I get my list and call my client. I tell them, ‘Hey, this is what we found. Do you want me to fix it? We leave it open to the customer. It all comes down to providing a level of service which, in turn, comes down to safety, comes down to getting every bit of the dollar spent on your service BACK! When I’m working on your machine, that’s what you’re getting; 100% of your dollars-worth all the time. It’s not a flat rate repair. I take my time and I do it right and that’s what it’s all about.” “I think that it’s very stimulating to work on various make and manufacturers of motorcycles. There is so much technology out there. We have everything from a 1968 flat head restored Servi-Car, a 2004 Yamaha R1 that we’re doing a 360 kit on. I have a chopper; we have the Born To Ride machine, late model twin cam bikes, Big Dogs, V-Stars, a Kawasaki mule for H & E Equipment—we’re working on their fleet stuff.

Anything I can get my hands on for service specs and parts—I’ll pretty much work on anything; it doesn’t matter to me. “When people go out of their way, call you to the gate and shake your hand and say, ‘Thank you for working on my bike!’ There’s nothing better in the whole world, man. The appreciation is really, really special.” “Michelin Corporate flew an engineer from France into the states. I was talking with this engineer and he was asking a ton of questions. I had all the right answers for him. Basically about a month later, we were contacted by the US sales rep. I was asked if I would be interested in helping them gather data for Michelin. I mean, it’s Michelin! It’s pretty impressive and I felt very gifted to have that opportunity. When I asked them why they picked my small, little shop over thousands of dealerships and shops all over the country they said that the engineer from France was very impressed and really wanted us to help them gather data. It’s going to be a year-long process. Tire pressures, wear patterns, from various manufacturers—not just Michelin. They want data from every tire that comes into this shop on every motorcycle. So, I told them BTR 64 | BORNTORIDE.COM

‘Absolutely, I would love to do it!’ It’s pretty neat!” “Tire pressure, man, it takes about five minutes of your life to check! It is the NUMBER ONE killer of premature tire wear. It’s such a simple thing and it’s not hard! 99.9%—and I’m not even making this up—99.9% of the motorcycles that come through this shop are underinflated! It’s almost every one of them! I have a chart on my desk from Michelin. I basically gather this information! When you’re running 8-10 pounds pressure below your normal operating pressure what happens is the tire temperature is right at the point where you mold these tire. The fuel mileage goes right out the window, and safety! I mean, 16 pounds of air on a front tire! That’s the first thing going into a turn. So if you have to narrow it down to the single most important thing people can do to maintain their vehicle, tire pressure!” “You know, when I take my jeep or vehicle that I don’t have the time to work on myself, I expect my hard-earned money to be spent on the right spot. If you’re telling me that you’re going to do this, that’s what I expect to be done. It’s about Pride and taking Pride

in what you do, being knowledgeable and knowing what you’re doing, being able to take the time and do it right. That’s what you get; an elite level of service from that. That’s what’s missing today. Everything is so fast-paced and NOW … all about cheap and fast. That’s what, unfortunately, society is today. I’m the ‘Old Skool” guy. I’m the one that wants it done right the first time. I don’t care what it is; you take your time and do it right. I don’t want to come back. Tell me the price, call me when it’s done and that’s the end of it. A lot of our clients are like that. That’s a great thing! Again, it’s an appreciation. We’re not for everybody; this level of service is expensive. We’re not cheap and we’re not a flat-rate deal. So what I can guarantee you is that elite level of service. We are very exclusive. It’s a two-wheeled motorcycle. You should not skimp. There is nothing to skimp on your bike. This is what’s keeping you happy and safe. It’s something that shouldn’t be taken lightly. You need to get your money’s worth and you need to get the job done properly! Give us a call! We will be more than happy to take care of your machine and take care of YOU! That’s the way it is.

Craven Moorehead

Once Upon a Time There was a Crazy-Ass Old Graybeard

With all the recent activity in my life, it becomes unusually difficult for me to enjoy just hanging out or being my usual rotten self. I have been constantly reminded of my degenerate lifestyle and lack of reasonable income. Plus, the fact that no matter what I do, some kind of crap comes up that prevents my happiness. Well, not really. I mean, it could be worse—much worse. I was sitting in the trailer park. Oh wait! I moved out of the trailer park. I forgot largely because now I am in charge of all this property and stuff and with all the trailers and motor-homes hanging out, well let’s just say I feel right at home. So anyhow, I was watching TV and on comes some crap regarding Bruce Jenner. … This dude that was once a star athlete is claiming that he is becoming a woman. Now wait a minute. Didn’t we remember this guy as a man? I dunno, but I certainly feel sorry for his kids who now can’t say “Hey dad, can I borrow the car?” In reality his huge bank account has already bought his offspring a few dozen cars but as usual I digress. I mean come on. Why does the media always follow the freak show mentality and not keep to the reality of life? I suppose that what I am seeing is mostly just some propaganda that shouldn’t be viewed by thinking individuals (or kids). Personally, I like the reality that has to be dealt with while on the open road and enjoy the meditation I get by being one with the wind. It seems that the only time I can get any peace and quiet is when I just get out on the highway. Then there comes the radio. I can’t seem to avoid the “Talk-Radio” circuit because I have a really cool radio on the bagger, and infrequently the radio in my old pickup still works. I used to listen to the CD player on the bagger or try to find the ‘one out of many’ stations that didn’t play the same worn out seven songs between commercials. Good radio is hard to find nowadays—especially when you want to rock out

or enjoy some progressive country music that doesn’t make ya want to cry in (and ruin) your beer. Anyhow, following talk radio has brought me to the same plateau that watching television does. Maybe I shouldn’t say plateau, I should say cliff. Yeah you know, the one you wanna jump off of when you’ve had enough BS in your life. And this revelation that I was given by listening to regular radio—be it talk, music, or a combination of both brought me back to my (abnormal) reality. So with all the aforementioned conflicting and sometimes useless information that I am supplying you, I decided to get back in the internet broadcasting business, largely due to the fact that I had extra room in my new location and moreover my personal desire to try to make things better for the general public, whether that constituent is listening or not. Honestly, I hate to just talk about radio in general and I suspect that you, my dedicated readers would rather read about some of the screwed up s#!t that I survived during my travels around the country. But the truth of the matter is that wherever you go, you will still be exposed to the same ‘media’ slant that all the regulated outlets cram down your throat. Unless you live in a small town where you can actually call in to a radio station and get your request played, you are pretty much stuck with what you get … I am trying to change that. For what it’s worth, I believe that in the very near future the internet is where all you regular working people will get all your entertainment. Be it TV radio or movies, the internet has taken the forefront in the delivery of your content. For better or worse, just live with it. You are stuck with it. … Are you ready for something new? Yeah, so are a lot of us folks. You can still check out our audio/video broadcast at the old website www.radiobarandgrill.com or a direct connection at http://www.ustream.tv/channel/party-pirate-102-1fm or simply go to www.wprn-db.com (a new site that is forthcoming) plus you can search the tunein.com and shoutcast.com sites for the Party Pirate102.1 FM. We are trying to make listening better for the central Florida area and beyond. We after all are world-wide and expect everyone to enjoy a difference in their non-regulated media experience. We offer the best in music and talk, commentary and local & national news. Come check it out. I suspect that next month you will be enjoying a new story involving a really cool trip I took that involved Mexico, some donkeys, girls and a lot of tequila, so I will give you a short preview: Once upon a time there was a crazy-ass old graybeard that ventured too far westward. Looking for nothing more than a good time, this dude rode his motorcycle through adverse conditions of all sorts without regard to safety, sanity or … Oh never-mind. Just check back in next month and enjoy more of my diatribe regarding my previously and currently busy life. So to all my dedicated readers, PLEASE speed safely and until next month don’t become a statistic and stay tuned in to the road ahead. Craven

Spyke & Mike I can tell you that pushing a motorcycle is hard to do, my BTR friends. I watched Mike get red in the face and breathe just like he ran a marathon after moving the Fat Bird maybe 100 feet around the building. He finally got the scoot back in front of the diner to await a pickup from Marson and KnowTow. It had only been a few hours, but in that time they had decorated the front door and steps with balloons and a banner saying; happy birthday Yeehaw Junction, Florida. A waitress comes out and yells, “I bet y’all did know it was our town’s birthday today. Wanna celebrate with us?” Mike looks at me and says, “Hot diggity dog Spyke! We’ve got something to do while waiting on the tow truck. Let’s make like a bee and fly inside.” Standing on Mikes’ shoulder, we go through the front door and the diner is packed. He whispers to me, “Look around Spyke, there ain’t a full set of teeth in this place. I bet they’re serving creamed grub.” He walks over to the buffet table and the only thing there is a sign saying ‘the food will be ready when the smoke alarm goes off!’ We head over to the counter where there is one seat left. Mike keeps me on his shoulder as he sits between an old man and a young woman. The waitress is really busy but takes a second to say, “I see you didn’t get yer bike fixed. Bubba means well, but he’s a few cans short of a six pack. Today we are proudly serving beer and wine as an appetizer because no great party stories ever started with everyone eating a salad

“IDIOTITIS!”

first.” Mike blurts out, “I’ll have a beer and Spyke would like some pineapple juice.” She replies, “You need to be more specific, pick your poison. As for bird brain, this ain’t no tooty fruity tiki bar. We got Bud, Busch, and Miller for you. Dodo bird gets orange juice.” Mike says, “I’ll take a Bud and Spyke will

have to make do with orange juice.” The old man hollers, “Hell hath no fury like me when I’m slightly intoxicated and hungry!” the girl beside us says, “Don’t mind him that’s my Uncle Ron. Our families are like fudge, very sweet with a lot of nuts mixed in. After I moved back here, I reached that point in my life were I felt it was no longer necessary to try and impress anyone. Just take a look around. If they like me the way I am great, if not it’s their loss.” The old man screams, “Well I like everybody. Some I like to be around, some I like to avoid, and others I would like to punch in the face!” She leans into us and whispers, “Pay no attention to Ron, he’s got a disease.” Mike jumps off the stool and screams, “A DISEASE?” She grabs his arm and cackles, “IDIOTITIS! It causes the brain to shut down and the mouth to keep talking.

It’s almost always induced by large amounts of alcohol. He is one of many here affected and it might be contagious. Your best defense: stand, slap, and run. That’s why there is an empty chair between us. I’ve learned to keep my distance!” The waitress asks her, “Honey, I know you don’t like our velvety smooth smorgasbord, so are you gonna order or not?” She babbles, “Well, is there turkey on the turkey sandwich today?” The waitress rolls her eyes and utters, “Nope, it’s tofu!” The blonde turns her head to the side and exclaims, “Great! I love tofu, I’ll have one! Do you have any house white wines that are sweet?” The waitress belches, “No, we have two dry white wines. However, we do have an imported sweet red wine. Would you like some of that?” She sighs and mumbles, “No, no just bring me a glass of white wine and two packets of sugar.” Mike leans into me and whispers, “Spyke, insanity is listening to people say the dumbest things over and over again and expecting different results every time!” Above the crowd noise, we hear a horn blaring outside. It’s Marson and he’s got the scoot loaded up and ready to go. Mike tells me, “Let’s make like a busboy and get the fork outta here!” We haul ass out the front door. Mike tosses me onto the bike and he jumps through the passenger window of the truck, NASCAR style. Mike yells loudly, “go, go, go!” Marson puts the pedal to the metal drivin’ the truck like he stole it. He says, “Looks like I got here just in time!” As he gets Spyke’s wings in the wind while she hangs onto the mirror and the Fat Bird’s wheels down the road, strapped in tight. SPYKE
