HONORING THEIR COURAGE AND

June is here and let’s not forget Dad. Father’s Day is a day honoring fathers, celebrated on various days in many places around the world. It complements Mother’s Day. Happy Father’s Day to all the father’s reading this ad and Happy Father’s Day to all the mother’s reading this if you are a sole parent, mom and a dad of the family. Grandfathers, step-dads, uncles, brothers and sisters, you all deserve to be noted for what you do to be a figure in a child’s life. If dads not there someone who steps in as a fatherly figure. As the originator we have only one father but it’s up to life to keep it all together, life, family, growing up in a household that’s strong and loving. Happy Father’s Day to my dad! A Marine and Ex Police Officer for 28 years. Thank you for everything you’ve done for me in my life. I admire you for who you are and how you always provided for the family. I love the way you love your grandchildren and I’m proud they love you back! To anyone reading this, call your dad and tell him Happy Father’s Day. And if you’re not speaking, now is the time to start speaking to your father again.

Ron Galletti BTR 4 | BORNTORIDE.COM

My Uncle “Gee” was my dad’s father figure in his life for many years because his father worked many hours. He came from Italy and worked with marble but then later became ill and couldn’t do much with my dad. That’s when Uncle “Gee” stepped in and helped my dad in life as a father figure. So in this month of June, as a special Father’s Day tribute, we would like to honor my Uncle “Gee” Fidel Galletti who was a real WWII war hero pilot who flew B-17s. Most of all, he was my dad’s hero. This story is courtesy of The 390th Memorial Museum and my cousin, Marie Galletii Mitchell. Ron Galletti As Marie Galletti Mitchell and I corresponded regarding her story in the Sq. J, I found myself reflecting on how I enjoy talking with and writing to our descendants. They are special people … people who realize the importance of what our 390th did during WWII. Allow me to quote from one of Marie’s letters: “What a group of good-looking, virile young men in Dad’s crew! Dad is first on the left in the front row. Laverne Dillow was killed in action. What a waste of life it was for him to have died so young! When Dillow went missing, his mother wrote to my mother to ask for news of her son. My mother has kept that letter in her wartime scrapbook ever since. Now that I’ve gotten older (age 61), I realize how many years and how many of life’s chapters young men like Dillow have missed. So true…and today we honor those living and we memorialize those who have passed on to their reward. Heroes all ... and we hope that this story adds yet another chapter to their lives … let it be so!

THE WARSAW AIRDROP OF 1944

On September 1, 1939, Nazi tanks rolled into Poland and started World War II. By September 18, 1944, the Polish resistance, which had bravely fought Hitler’s military might for five long years, was trapped in Warsaw with food, ammunition and other supplies running dangerously low. The Poles called upon the Allies to provide supplies by airdrop. The Allies agreed, and airmen of the 390th, along with the 95th and 100th, were called upon to replenish the patriots of Warsaw with the supplies they desperately needed. There was a catch, however. Warsaw is situated west of the Vistula River from Russia, and the Soviets had an unstated plan: Joseph Stalin wanted to weaken Poland in order that Russia could add this formerly sovereign nation to its empire once WWII was over. So while Stalin orally agreed to the Polish Airdrop, he kept delaying it by refusing to allow Allied planes to land on Soviet soil. (At that time, B-17s could not carry enough fuel to fly from England to Poland round trip.) Meanwhile, the Poles were getting weaker, and thousands died fighting Nazi soldiers on the streets of Warsaw. Finally, in September

1944, Stalin relented, giving the Allies permission to land about one hundred B-17s at some makeshift airfields in Russia. On September 18, 1944, my father, First Lieutenant Fidel Galletti, along with his crew of eight men, climbed into their Flying Fortress to complete their 23rd mission of WWII. These airmen would fly for 10 hours that day to provide the Poles with the supplies they desperately needed. My father’s log for that day reads, “We were to drop supplies to the Polish partisans holding parts of the city. Load was 10 containers and 2,800 gallons topped off. Bombing altitude was to be 14,000 feet. We ran into weather about 50 miles west of target and did several 360s trying to get over it. Colonel Tuesdale [command pilot of the lead plane] gave up trying to get on top and decided to go under as the base of clouds was at 12,000 feet. We got to the IP [Initial Point] and started on the run when fighters hit us. We were flying 565 #2 in the high of the high and out of position as they hit us. They came out of the clouds, and the tail, waist and ball opened up on them. Nine of them attacked from six o’clock level, and Rogers [tailgunner] had the best shot at them. He got the fourth coming in. Two 20 mm shells hit in the cockpit alongside of Spencer [co-pilot], and the oxygen started burning.” Behind the pilot and co-pilot were two oxygen tanks. Flak from the German ammunition pierced both tanks, setting the highly volatile gas into a blaze which quickly spread throughout the cabin. The co-pilot, William Spencer, found himself sitting next to a three-foot hole in the side of the plane, with oxygen burning all around him. His only option was to jump from his seat, through the hatch and into the nose. Before he leapt from the cockpit, he used the interphone to order the crew to bail out. At the same time, my father pulled away from the formation so that his plane, if it went out of control, would not bring down any other B-17s. He then set up the autopilot and hit the alarm bell. Both my father and the co-pilot were unaware that the fire had eaten through the communication lines, rendering it impossible for the crew to hear the orders to bail out of the crippled aircraft. Meanwhile, the interior of the airplane continued to burn, and the plane was filling with smoke. The airmen, while still able to breathe through oxygen masks, were unable to see through the dense smoke. The crew would have to act quickly if they were to save their lives and those of the Polish people they had flown so far to help. Top Turret Gunner Eduard H. Daly, reacting quickly to a five-foot hole and a fire in the waist of the plane,

Pilot Fidel Galletti grabbed a fire extinguisher, put out the fire in the rear of the cockpit, then passed the fire extinguisher to my father. My father worked on putting out the fire up front, all the while knowing that if any flak were to nick the nearby primer fuel line, the plane would explode. The primer, next to the punctured oxygen tanks, was constantly charged with gasoline. Whenever fighter planes and ground antiaircraft artillery hit a plane, shrapnel can boomerang around inside the aircraft and hit anything or anybody in it, including, of course, the primer line. Fortunately, once the fires were extinguished, the worst was over. The primer was never nicked, and no one but the pilot sustained even minor wounds. However, danger still threatened the aircraft and its crew. The right tail elevator, necessary to stabilize the aircraft, had been almost torn off, and the cables to the tail section were nearly severed. One of the duties of a pilot is to keep his plane stable, but the damaged tail elevator pulled against my father, physically moving him back and forth as he tried to control the aircraft. In effect, the damaged tail was working against him for control of the plane. In addition, my father was concerned that the torn tail cables, which had been shredded into wires, would get caught in the pulleys through which they threaded on their way from the control stick to the tail. Fortunately, this was not the case and finally, almost miraculously, after what must have seemed like hours of German attack, the Flying Fortress set down as scheduled on an improvised landing field in Mirograd, Russia. In spite of fire and the damage to the plane, bombardier Harry Evje had been able to drop the supplies on target, thus fulfilling mission #23 of my father’s crew: to assist the Polish dissidents in resisting the Nazi army. In August 2005, a CNN documentary, “Warsaw Rising,”

Nancy Ray nray@borntoride.com

filmed from Warsaw during the airdrop, shows the B-17s approaching the city. They looked so heroic as they flew in to the rescue! In the words of narrator David Ensor, “Suddenly, in the sky – a miracle!” In the same documentary, Nina Januszowska Thiessen, a Polish underground courier, recalls of the airdrop: That was the most wonderful picture, when the American planes came. They were very, very high, so you didn’t see anything; you just heard the mmmm [sounds] of the heavy bombers. Then, all of a sudden, there was –like flowers. The parachutes were multi-colored, you know. And those multicolored flowers brought hope that Warsaw would live another day. Over 2,500 years ago, Herodutus, “The Father of Western History,” declared that the purpose of written history was to memorialize glorious deeds. The Polish Airdrop of 1944 is one of modern history’s glorious deeds. America can be proud that the crew of B-17 #565, along with hundreds of other young American airmen, bravely risked their lives to take part in this gallant operation. THE LANE CHANGER

While riding in the right lane of a three-lane highway, you decide to pass a slower-moving car by changing lanes to your left. Just as you begin to move left, a car in the far left lane also decides to pass by moving to the right, and suddenly the two of you are fighting for the same lane. When it’s car-versus-bike, you already know the outcome. Strategy: By actively searching the present traffic environment you should have observed the car two lanes over, and predicted that the driver would end up in your target lane if she decided to change lanes and pass at the same time you did. Separate yourself from the hazard: either wait a few moments to pass, until the car in the far left lane has moved ahead, or slow down to drop back a car length. It is also a wise tactic to signal several seconds before making a move, and to turn your head occasionally to check your blind spot to better observe surrounding traffic. GENERATION TO GENERATION

In

a house which becomes a home, one hands down and another takes up the heritage of mind and heart, laughter and tears, musings and deeds. Love, like a carefully loaded ship, crosses the gulf between the generations. Therefore, we do not neglect the ceremonies of our passage: when we wed, when we die, and when we are blessed with a child; When we depart and when we return; When we plant and when we harvest. Let us bring up our children. It is not the place of some official to hand to them their heritage. If others impart to our children our knowledge and ideals, they will lose all of us that is wordless and full of wonder. Let us build memories in our children, lest they drag out joyless lives, lest they allow treasures to be lost because they have not been given the keys. We live, not by things, but by the meanings of things. It is needful to transmit the passwords from generation to generation.

Yes, you have read correctly, Happy Father’s Day Fran! Werner Haasch knows he has wonderful children, Fran and Marcus Haasch, and he’s the one who is grateful and thankful on Father’s Day. He doesn’t want to be catered to or spoiled for the day, but instead he wants to show his love and appreciation in a special way. So how does Werner do that for Fran? By building Fran an Almhütte of course! While on a family trip to Austria last year, Fran spotted an Almhütte and commented to her father how she would adore a hut like this in her back yard. An Almhütte is an Alpine hut that is found in Austria, Switzerland, and Germany. It’s commonly used for animals grazing in the wild to seek shelter from weather. It has a peaked roof with an approximate 4-foot overhang on the sides. It’s common in Germany to see a huge boulder on the roof to hold the roof down during windy conditions. You see, Fran has a love for all animals; she has goats, cows, donkeys, and dogs … they all have names and personalities. Fran could only imagine how her animals would benefit from such a structure. Werner saw Fran’s imagination going wild. He found some photos and his mind began working on the plan. Werner was going to build Fran her animal hut. After returning to the States, Werner began the design on paper; soliciting help from a family friend Edward Fitzpatrick and his grandson Henry, the project was underway. He made a list of materials needed, which included properly treated cedar from Chiefland, FL. He had a wood burned “Almhütte” sign made to hang over the door which has an image of a goat and a cow. There are four layers to the roof; the inside layer made of small tree logs to give it an authentic rustic ceiling when you look up once inside. The outside has wood shingles. And yes, the boulder is going to be mounted on the roof to replicate the authentic Almhütte. It’s all in

the details. But there are two extra special touches that are going on Fran’s Almhütte to complete the project. One is a masterpiece work of metal that Werner twisted himself by hand in 1957 while completing his apprenticeship in Germany as a metal worker. It adds the perfect Alpine look to the Almhütte window and comes from the heart. The other special touch is slightly difficult to explain. When Fran was able to open her first law office, she chose a site in Palm Harbor, FL. The property had an existing small building and next to it a unique historic free standing door with old rusty hinges and a door knocker. Image just a door standing there alone. Werner could never have been so proud to see his daughter break ground

on that site and grow her own business into what it is today. He kept that old rusty hardware from the demolished door and has been polishing it diligently to place on the Almhütte. For Werner, this special Almhütte is a one-of-a-kind for a one-of-a-kind daughter. It signifies where they both came from and where they are today. There have been proposals from others for a similar build but Werner declines and explains there will only be one for a special daughter… Fran. A father so very proud of a daughter that has become a wife, mother, business woman and philanthropist. He is enamored by her need to help save the world and what she does for others every single day. She tells him just like she did as a child getting one “B” at school, “But Dad, it’s just not good enough. I need to do better, I need to do more.” That’s his Francoise. Stay with us over the summer for more photos as Werner completes this special project for Fran.

The greatest gift I ever had Came from God; I call him Dad! Happy Father’s Day, I Love You

This original story ran in BTR in 2006, things may have changed in the Ukraine by now.

BORNTORIDE.COM | BTR 15

On May 7, the streets of Zaporozhye (a small industrial city 600 km south of Kiev) roared like thunder as the festivities began for the annual opening day celebrations of the Ukrainian biker season. Bikers from all parts of the Ukraine and the former Soviet Union were in attendance. I caught up with the Zaporozhye “Silver Star” bikers club on a cloudy, rain-swept morning under one of the few remaining statues of the once mighty revolutionary hero Vladimir Ilyich Lenin who stands in a small park overlooking the river Dnepr—which locally and historical is famous for its Cossack heritage. I was welcomed with enthusiasm and warm handshakes by the club members before being seated on the back of the club Trike where I could enjoy (first hand) the carnival BTR 16 | BORNTORIDE.COM

atmosphere of the opening day parade. We cruised down the main highway “Prospect Lenina” to the city center. We stopped for a public photo shoot and press release session before heading off to our final destination where the main festivities would then take place. A beautiful, scenic hideaway situated on the Island of Hortitsa where the once mighty and much feared Cossack warriors dwelled some hundreds of years before would set the arena for the modern day free spirited warriors. Unfortunately, weather conditions did not allow for the spectacular stunts usually performed by the club members on the opening day celebrations, but the other fun and games went ahead as planned. After settling in with a touch of light refreshment and a little leg stretching, the

evening’s entertainment got underway. First on the evening’s agenda were a few games to test the rider’s bike handling skills, and as always “bite the sausage” was a firm favorite for the ladies. The rider must slowly pass under a line of hanging sausages with his lady passenger standing on the back foot pegs. The lady without using her hands must bite the end off the sausage as they pass underneath. It really is enough to bring tears to the eyes of even the most hardened male biker. As darkness fell it was time (as the club president so quaintly put it) to feed the family. One and all were given the full VIP treatment as a vast array of traditional Ukrainian foods, various meats cooked over open fires and local beers and spirits were on display and quickly consumed to the

music of some local, up and coming, rock bands. It was truly a feast fit for a king that satisfied the heartiest of appetites, including my own. During the course of the evening I was able to escape the wild side of life and pin down a very busy club Vice president Eugene and ask him a few questions about the Silver Star bikers club and what it means to be a biker in the Ukraine. Eugene explains: “There are 25 regions in the Ukraine, each has its own official biker club. Every club holds its own opening day celebrations and, of course, the bigger the

club, the bigger the celebrations. In Kiev and Odessa, for example, they have massive festivals that go on for three or four days. They have famous rock groups performing and a number of other events that a small club like ours couldn’t possibly dream of holding. Even so, all the biker clubs in the Ukraine have very close ties and no matter how big or small the event, you can see most clubs represented at every festival.” “We are also seeing a larger and larger number of foreign biker visiting the bigger shows. Every year the attendances are expanding and this is something we are

positively encouraging. It’s always a pleasure to meet new people and we are always proud to welcome visitors from abroad in the traditional Ukrainian way. There are many beautiful places to visit in the Ukraine, especially around the Black sea and Odessa where we have a special hotel for bikers with secure parking, clean accommodation and even a repair shop. Zaporozhye is a city steeped in Cossack history with some of the most stunning landscapes in the world. And then there’s our beautiful capital city of Kiev which is a very European orientated city where I think just about every one speaks at

least a little English. So there is a lot to see and do here in the Ukraine.” “We officially registered our club “Silver Star” bikers club on March 4, 2004. We were the first officially registered club in the city of Zaporozhye. Originally there were seven members, (we like to call them the founding fathers) that’s why our club symbol is a seven-point star, one point for each founder.” “Although the club has only been an official organization for a couple of years, the actual idea to start a bikers club had been in the air for much longer. It all really began at

the mechanic’s garage. We call him the mechanic because he is the most wellknown and respected bike mechanic for miles around. His house is an open house for bikers; we all used to gather around his place on regular bases and discuss everything about bikes.” “We talked for months about opening a club and threw a lot of ideas around, but for a long time that was as far as it got, just talk. Eventually someone had to do something a little more positive and set the wheels in motion. So I said ‘Let’s do it, let’s stop talking and get it done.’ And that’s where the

Freedom is being in the wind no matter where you live you are Born To Ride.

idea to open an official bikers club took its roots.” “In Donetsk there is a famous biker’s bar named the Chicago. It’s owned by one the Ukraine’s most legendary bikers, his name is ‘Palych.’ Palych runs the bar as a meeting place for bikers, not as an official club. You can meet bikers from all over the Ukraine at the Chicago. Palych, I suppose, is like a hero to us and it’s a great honor for any club to have him attend one of their festivals. Although he is one of the Ukraine’s oldest bikers, he still tries to attend every festival no matter how far away. This year BORNTORIDE.COM | BTR 19

we are especially honored to see Palych here because he has traveled all the way from Donetsk on a quad bike, even though he has recently suffered a broken leg.” “Another legendary biking hero is a guy we call ‘Magisterial.’ He is about 55 years old and originally comes from White Church. Magisterial is famous for traveling. He has ridden all over, Europe, America, Scandinavia and other countries. He has attended some of the most famous biking events in the world, including the HarleyDavidson centenary celebration in Europe. He is fondly known by the bikers of the Ukraine as the ‘lone wolf’ because he always travels alone.” “At the moment the whole biker scene is still a bit of a novelty in our country and as a result biking is very expensive. There wasn’t even an official bike shop in the Ukraine until three years ago; you had to go to Moscow to buy a bike. That in its self was, and still BTR 20 | BORNTORIDE.COM

is a barrier for people wanting to own a bike and become seriously involved in the biking culture. So of course, you don’t see as many new sport bikes or Harley-Davidson choppers over here as you would in Europe or the States; people simply cannot afford to buy them. However, considering the fact that we have only been free to build our biker culture since the collapse of the Soviet Union some 15 years ago, I think we are not doing too badly. Every year the number of bikers attending our festivals is expanding, and every year there are more and larger festivals being held. More bike shops are opening all over the Ukraine and touring is becoming easier with more pit-stop hotels, for bikers, opening up. We are also seeing an increasing number of biker clubs and biker bars opening that are dedicated to promoting the free spirit of biking.” I thanked Eugene and bid him a fond farewell leaving the Silver Star bikers club

with many happy memories. I had been welcomed like royalty and treated like a king, and after spending a few days riding with the Silver Star bikers club I was left in no doubt that biking in the Ukraine is defiantly heading in the right direction to becoming a firm favorite on the bikers touring calendar. The Ukraine is one of the world’s few remaining un-discovered treasures. Exotic seaside resorts, wonderfully warm people, some of the tastiest cuisine in the world and all in all a very inexpensive place to travel, all of which makes the Ukraine a very attractive touring destination. So if you are looking to take a great ride in a wonderful and unique country, come and take a ride with the Cossacks and discover the beauty of the Ukraine. I did and it was a whole lot of fun. We are gathering here to celebrate and pay our respects to Buggie and condolences to his old lady Maryann for making this thing they got—legal. Gather around brothers and sisters to hear this for yourselves. Sometimes we find ourselves riding down the highway of life with half a tank of gas, only one jug firing, only three gears working, and we just don’t feel like a whole being. We feel like there is a void and a hole in our life that needs to be filled. There comes a time, and for many of us it’s more than once in a lifetime, when we decide the woman on the back or the hemorrhoid driving in the front is a keeper. That has come for Buggie and Maryann. We are truly blessed they decided to share this time with us, so shut up and pay attention! If any of you gearheads have a reason that this shouldn’t happen, you better keep it to yourself because we don’t care. Now Buggie, do you promise to forsake all floozies, to stroke Maryann repeatedly and often? Do you promise to share your primary fluid and keep her tranny lubed up? And pump her up when her air is low and keep her intake tuned and properly maintained, ride her as often as you do your bike, make her engine purr and keep her close to your heart and cherish her till the wheels fall off? Now Maryann, do you promise to forsake all Chip and Dale dancers and bar room losers to service Buggie’s rod and piston with decidedly up and down movement when he feels the need? To ride him as often as he rides his bikes, pump out his oil when he needs it, put up with his embarrassing loud noises, make his engine scream and cherish him. On the authority granted to me by this here Harley-Davidson service manual and the Internet; I pronounce you brother and sister for life. You may kiss the bride and you may kiss the hemorrhoid! Over the past 30 years I have attended more rallies than I can remember, but I have never attended one like this. Angel City looks like a town right out of the Old West, and it has a campground surrounding the town constructed just for bikers on 100 acres of land off exit 121 near Unadilla, Georgia. Wayne Smith, a long-time biker himself, is the town builder and CEO of Angel City. Wayne is also the event coordinator for the rally. He had a dream a few years ago. He wanted to provide a place where bikers could gather for a few days of biker fun with no outside interference. Angel City is that place! Dawn Smith (Wayne’s better half) is the office manager who makes sure everything runs smoothly with the camping, RV sites, tickets, vendors, and sponsors. You will usually see her at the ticket booth when you arrive. Two rallies are held there each year, one in April and one in October. The Angel City Rally is motorcycle enthusiasts coming together to enjoy a lifestyle that many people may not understand. It reminded me of events I have attended in the old days when it is all about brotherhood and having a good time with other riders. If you get a chance and you want to attend a uniquely different rally, you owe it to yourself to put Angel City on your list of can’t miss events. The next Angel City Rally is the Fall Rally, Oct 7th-11th. For more info go to AngelCityMotorcycleRally.com or call: 478-627-3168 Ron Hawks BORNTORIDE.COM | BTR 43

TECH TIP: HORSEPOWER & TORQUE

Without one you can’t have the other. Torque and Horsepower are often confused but closely related in the equation for measuring horsepower. You just need to add RPM. The three factors involved in measuring horsepower would be torque, RPM, and the constant 5252, which is the measurement of time. It all started with the horse. Horsepower (H-P) is a unit of power for measuring the rate at which an engine or primary mover (the horse) can perform mechanical work in a given amount of time, over a set distance. In the 17th century James Watt developed the first practical steam engine. He used his engine to pump water out of mines; before that draft horses were used. So it was logical to relate the work the steam engine could do with the amount of horses it could replace. Draft horses are huge animals, like the Budweiser Clydesdales; not as pretty but these brutes did the work. The original “sled pull” started with horses pulling a sled because “gear heads” back then didn’t have dyno’s to see whose horse was the baddest. The horse would pull a certain amount of weight; the measured distance and time it took to move the weight became the measurement

for H-P. Watt’s came up with the figure for H-P by using the horse to plot a circular path pulling at a right angle at the end of a twelve-foot lever projecting from a capstan at the center of a circle. The capstan in turn was geared to operate the pump. Watt’s estimated that the horse pulled with a force (or torque) of 180 LBS. The circle it followed had a circumference of 2 X pi X a radius of 12 feet which = 75.4 feet the horse could make 144 trips around the circle in one hour or 2.4 trips a minute for a speed of 181 feet per minute. To convert the demonstration of the horse’s power or work into measurable leverage or what is commonly referred to as torque, force, or work. Watt’s multiplied the 180 LBS. (the force the horse was pulling) by the 181 feet (the distance the horse walked) and came up with 32,580 pounds feet per minute which he rounded to 33,000 pounds feet per minute. That means if 33,000 pounds feet per minute is divided by pi multiplied by 2 the result is 5252. This constant enters a time factor into the equation. Now we need to relate torque (work) RPM, (distance) and the constant figure 5252 (relating to time) to a rotating shaft of an

engine. Torque also referred to as work or force and is what moves or accelerates the bike. Torque is the twisting or turning force that engineers measure in pound-foot equal to 1 pound of force applied at the end of a one-foot lever and is described, as 1 FT./ LBS., which is the measurement of torque. Torque is what pushes the piston down. Currently the only efficient method that exists for measuring H-P is by measuring actual engine torque and RPM with a dyno and then calculating H-P. Watt’s definition of H-P is equal to a work multiplied by a distance divided by time. With this simple equation we can calculate H-P or torque at any RPM. Horsepower = Torque X RPM Work X Distance 5252 Time Example 100 Ft./LBS X 5000 RPM = 95.20hp 5252 Torque = Horsepower X 5252 RPM Horsepower X Time Distance BORNTORIDE.COM | BTR 51

TECH TIP: HORSEPOWER / TORQUE

Example 95.20 H-P X 5252 = 100 Ft./LBS. 4500 RPM An engines torque is determined by the percentage a cylinder is filled at a given RPM. Volumetric efficiency represents the percentage of cylinder fill. The greater the cylinder fill (VE) the greater the torque will be. Torque Peak is the point at which an engine achieves maximum cylinder filling. In a Harley motor it usually around 5000 RPM. A Harley motor is not a very efficient engine. Usually when referring to Harley’s you would refer to a torque figure in foot-pounds this is because a Harley engine does not have the ability to turn high RPM’s. On the other hand the 4 cylinder engines have the ability to turn high RPM’s because of better airflow, shorter strokes, and overhead cams. These motors will usually turn 10,000 RPM’s. Referred to as a horsepower motor, this is because they don’t make as much torque as a Harley per stroke but they can turn twice as many RPM’s. So a torque engine works harder at a slower speed and a horsepower engine doesn’t work as hard but at twice the speed, to achieve the same amount of H-P. Again H-P is the measurement of work after it is done.

BTR 52 | BORNTORIDE.COM

An example: A torque motor making 100 Ft./LBS. of torque turning at 5000 RPM’s versus a horsepower motor making 50 Ft./ LBS. of torque turning at 10,000 RPM’s will achieve the same amount of H-P, which is 95.20. Torque Engine 100 Ft./LBS X 5000 RPM 5252 Horsepower Engine 50Ft./LBS X 10000RPM 5252 Both = 95.20hp Since horsepower is equal to torque multiplied by RPM, any torque increase results in a power increase at any given RPM level. Horsepower on the other hand is the speed at which an engine performs work the faster an engine performs a given amount of work the more horsepower is developed. If you look at a dyno chart you will see that the torque line starts out on top and meets the H-P line at 5252 RPM. The reason for this is, torque and H-P are always equal at 5252 RPM because 1 Ft./LBS below 5252 RPM produces less than 1 H-P. Consequently 1 Ft./LBS above 5252 RPM is always more than 1 H-P. If the torque number is larger than the H-P it’s because you’re measuring below 5252 RPM. That is why; less than

5252 RPM’s is always referred to as torque and above 5252 RPM’s is always referred to as H-P. Here are some H-P figures for some different engines. FLH Shovel makes 66 H-P at 5600 RPM; An Evo makes 69 H-P at 5000 RPM The V-Rod destroyer makes 165 H-P at 9700 RPM this is H-D’s new race bike NHRA Pro-stock inline 4 motorcycles are 101 C.I. making 300 H-P at 13,500 RPM, The G2 Motor Sports Buell is 160 C.I. and makes 300 H-P at 9000 RPM, All Harley Drag Racing Association top fuel dragster is 175 C.I. and makes 800 H-P NHRA Pro-stock car is 500 C.I. making 1400 H-P and turns 10,000 RPM The big daddy of them is NHRA’s top fuel with 500 C.I. engines turn 10,000 RPM making 7,500 H-P. Biker Movie Review

This month Born To Ride reviews the 1971 film “Psychomania.” If you like old British horror films, then this one’s for you. Maybe I should have said horrible old British films. Either way, Psychomania has a lot to like or dislike, depending on your level of intoxication. The film centers around the life of “Tom” who is the leader of a ‘motorcycle gang’ called the Living Dead. Tom and his ‘gang’ ride authentic period Triumph motorcycles, and meet in a field with several

large vertical stones which somewhat resemble Stonehenge. When they gather there, they often discuss what they will do in the particular day, but there is always talk of committing suicide, so they can live forever. Where could they get such an unsavory idea? From Tom’s occultist Mum of course! In a dream like sequence, Tom has the pleasure of seeing his lovely Mum sign a deal with the Devil to have eternal life. His soul is assumed to be part of the deal, as there is a tot in a basket screaming as Mum signs the deal. All this weirdness is further accelerated by a frog. I dunno? It’s just strange. We’ll get to the Frog—plus stones thing later. On one particular day, Tom and his gang decide to ride through town and wreak havoc on the locals. They ride through a mall square like setting, tipping over shopping carts, baby carriages, and other things until the Bobbies arrive. A chase ensues and most of the members escape the long arm of the law. Tom hellbent on killing himself rides his motorcycle through a guardrail and into the river. In a strange ritual, Tom is buried sitting upright on his motorcycle near the stones. His gang makes wreaths of flowers and other artifacts, which are buried with him as a guy plays the guitar and sings. Mum’s weird butler buries a frog necklace with him and all the other stuff. Later, a motorist breaks down near the stones, and has the horror of seeing Tom ride his motorcycle out of the grave. He of course is struck by the speeding Triumph and assumed dead. Tom then proceeds to call home from a local public house, and speaks to the butler and his Mum. Later he kills several people from the pub, and escapes into the night. The next day he arrives at the stones where the gang is trying to figure out who stole Tom’s body, and motorcycle. Thinking Tom is the thief, the gang begins questioning him and one of the members sneaks up to stab him in the back. This is where they realize that Tom had really come back from the dead. Seeing how cool it is to be immortal, the rest of the gang sets out to be just like Tom and each one kills him or herself in increasingly more bizarre ways. All succeed but Tom’s girlfriend, who after a failed attempt, really wants to live a normal life. In the end Tom gives her the ultimatum to join him in the ‘living dead.’ While she is deciding what to do with the gun he has handed her, his lovely Mum performs a ritual which turns her into a frog, and the rest of the ‘dead gang’ into stones while she shoots Tom. Sound confusing? Yeah, it does to me too! I guess the moral of the story is: Don’t feel too froggy, cause you might get stoned.… The Phantom

WE CARE ON MEMORIAL DAY AND EVERYDAY Philip Paul Clark RIP, GOD BLESS

The story of the birth of the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches proves miracles do happen. It tells how an impossible dream grew into one of the finest delinquency prevention programs in the nation.

Early History In 1955, two veteran Florida Sheriffs took a trip to Texas—a trip that would forever change the lives of thousands of Florida’s trouble, abused, and neglected youngsters. Several years ago, Hillsborough County Sheriff Ed Blackburn, Jr. related the following details about that memorable trip. He and Marion County Sheriff Don McLeod made the journey to retrieve a pair of armed robbery suspects. “It was in June of 1955 that Don and I drove to Amarillo. The drive out West was tedious and tiring. We decided to rest a day before beginning the trip back home,” began Blackburn as the story unfolded. “The local sheriff assigned a deputy to guide us around. He was a typical Texan, tall, high hat, cowboy boots, extremely courteous and accommodating. Since the county was far too big to see in one day, he offered us a choice. He told us we could visit the beautiful Palo Duro Canyon or take a look at a ranch for needy and neglected boys. Ironically, we chose to see the canyon. While that deputy drove us around the canyon, he recounted the wonderful results of that boys ranch on the other side of the county. He told us how a former wrestler had picked up four ‘ragamuffins’ out of the slums and alleys of Amarillo … how he gave them a home with love and discipline and helped turn their lives around. We learned how the old house he bought in 1939 had grown into a home for 200 boys. This deputy was a supporter of this ranch and truly sang its praises. The next day we put the two prisoners in the back seat of our car and headed home. One suspect was an 18-year-old boy. He had been injured during the get-away so he had a tube draining out of his side and a cast on one foot. The other prisoner, his accomplice, was a frightened 17-year-old girl, some five months pregnant. A few miles east of Amarillo, the seed that the Texas Deputy had sown began to germinate. What made it stir, no one knows. Maybe it was the plight of that shot-up, crippled boy and frightened pregnant girl in our back seat. They were little more than kids, yet were in big trouble. We began to talk, agreeing if a wrestler could capture the vision of helping neglected and unwanted boys … then, so could the Sheriffs of Florida. We began talking to fellow sheriffs about starting a Boys Ranch in Florida. Later that year, we presented the idea to the Florida Sheriffs Association Board of Directors. The idea was tabled because no money was available.

Another year passed, but somehow miracles live on. In early 1957, the Sheriffs of Florida voted to approve the Honorary Membership program to raise funds for the Association. In less than six months, hundreds of Floridians became Honorary Members of the Florida Sheriffs Association. Now, instead of being broke, the Association had a bank balance of $7,000. Our dream to help troubled boys was quickly revived! No one suggested sheriffs didn’t know how to run a Boys Ranch. No one told us about the State Welfare Department’s licensing restrictions, or the State Board of Health’s inspection and permitting process. Nor did we consider the formidable task of getting the Internal Revenue Service to grant us a Charitable Tax Exemption status. Least of all, no one mentioned $7,000 wouldn’t even buy a paddy wagon, much less start a Boys Ranch. Nevertheless, at our next meeting, Florida’s Sheriffs voted for found the Florida Sheriffs Boys Ranch. The Associated Press picked up the story and gave us the much-needed publicity.” Meanwhile, Suwannee County Sheriff Hugh Lewis picked up the ball and ran with it. He knew that Live Oak Businessman Tommy Musgrove had originally given some 40 acres to the Elks Club for a youth project. He also owned another 120 acres to the south of that site. Sheriff Lewis persuaded the Elks and Tommy to consider donating this land on the banks of the Suwannee River for the Ranch. Local community leaders formed a prestigious committee, spearheaded by J.L. McMullen, who helped convince the sheriffs to select this land as the site for its proposed Ranch. The sheriffs officially accepted the offer during the FSA conference in August of 1957. The sheriffs also learned that just east of this beautiful site were two abandoned farms totaling another 550 acres. They were just perfect for the project, but it would cost $31,000 in cash to buy them both. Two local banks agreed to lend the sheriffs $13,000 each, for a

1-800-765-3797 or visit us at www.youthranches.org

total of $26,000 toward the purchase price of the farms. The sheriffs added $5,000 of their $7,000 bank balance and bought the land. Now with only $2,000 cash in hand, the men embarked on the task of building the Florida Sheriffs Boys Ranch. Florida’s sheriffs were undaunted by the challenges before them. They had a dream and a hope—a vision of a better life for youngsters— and they had the growing support of the citizens of Florida. As news of the Boys Ranch project spread, the sheriffs’ circle of interested and supportive friends began to grow. Floridians were learning their sheriffs had virtues never seen before. This vision of helping boys with bad breaks get their lives back on track had appeal. The Florida Sheriffs Boys Ranch gained popular support and captured the imaginations and hearts of generous people across the state and nation. Countless friends, both new and old, responded. People donated money and materials, joining with the sheriffs in this labor of love. Ground was broken for the first cottage in the summer of 1958, and the first boys moved to the Ranch in early 1959. The Boys Ranch Trustees voted to dedicate that first cottage in memory of Pinellas County Sheriff Sid Saunders. He died suddenly, just after helping to hire the architect for the new cottage at the Boys Ranch. Sheriff Saunders’ untimely death triggered an outpouring of memorial gifts for the fledgling Boys Ranch. These precious gifts of love and hope helped carry on the vision to provide a safe home for so many deserving children. These original donors have now been joined by countless other friends and benefactors who have helped the Boys Ranch grow into a statewide network of programs that has served over 100,000 boys, girls, and their families from across the state of Florida. Because of the leadership of Florida’s Sheriffs and the ongoing generosity of our donor family, the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches has truly become Florida’s Charity for Florida’s Children.

Fort Myers Beach is on Estero Island which is home of spectacular “natural beaches” and breathtaking sunsets. Located on the picturesque Southwest Florida Gulf Coast, this luxurious 12-acre resort sits nestled in a stunning natural environment at the tip of Fort Myers Beach between trendy Naples and laid-back Sanibel and Captiva Islands. Ft. Meyers and asked to speak to their marketing manager, because I wanted to do a destination location feature and the Pink Shell was high on my list of places I wanted to highlight. Soon after, I had the pleasure of meeting Ellis Etter, the head of marketing for the resort. At that meeting he told me, “Ron, I read your magazine every month, and we’d like to invite you and your family to stay here at The Pink Shell so you can experience first-hand the exceptional service, hospitality and amenities offered to guests at our resort.” He was absolutely right. We had an unbelievable stay. Everything was first class. Getting to know Ellis “The Silver Fox” Etter we found out that he was a super guy who loves to ride, but more than that he is Born To Ride. We want to introduce, now, to Mr. Ellis Etter, the Silver Fox of the Pink Shell and Baxkin Management Company.

Tell us what you do at the Pink Shell, and where you are located? I’m the regional director of sales and marketing. The Pink Shell Beach Resort and Marina is located on the southwest Florida Gulf Coast, between trendy Naples and laid-back Sanibel and Captiva Islands. The Pink Shell Beach Resort & Marina sits nestled in a stunning natural environment at

the tip of Estero Island on Fort Myers Beach, providing sweeping beachfront views and sugarwhite sands stretching along the Gulf of Mexico.

What does the Pink Shell Resort have to offer as an ultimate destination resort? Pretty much anything you can think of to do, short of snow skiing and mountain climbing, is available at the Pink Shell. With 12 lush acres and 213 deluxe beachfront accommodations, the Pink Shell includes all the conveniences and amenities you’d expect from a family-friendly resort including a full service marina. Try your hand at sailing or experience the excitement of a dolphin-sightseeing tour on a Wave Runner. Enjoy waterfront dining or sip poolside cocktails at Bongo’s. Find rejuvenation at our full-service Aquagene Spa. The kids will love being in our Octopool, the undersea fantasy pool, or have fun spending a day of adventure with the KiddsKampp® crew. For the back bay or offshore angler boat rentals are available, or book a charter with one of our experienced guides. If you have the time, we have the activity. We are also a great location for couples who enjoy relaxing and reconnecting.

You can get to the resort by land or by sea? Yes, come by car or come by boat. From the

Turn left and travel west on Daniels Parkway for approximately 4 miles to Ben C. Pratt/Six Mile Cypress Parkway. • Turn left at the light. • Via Route 75 take exit 131. • Travel 4.5 miles on Ben C. Pratt/Six Mile Cypress Parkway. You will cross U.S. Rte. 41. Turn left on Summerlin Road. Travel west on Summerlin Road for 4 miles to the Route 865 San Carlos Boulevard exit. (This is a right exit off Summerlin Road; do not go over the San Carlos Bridge) At the traffic light for San Carlos Boulevard turn left under the overpass onto San Carlos Boulevard headed west. Travel 2.5 miles on San Carlos Boulevard and cross the Matanzas Pass Bridge. Turn right as you come over the bridge onto Estero Boulevard North. Travel 0.75 miles to the Pink Shell Beach Resort. The registration office is on the left. By boat via the outside passage, use chart number 11427, set your course for the Morse (A) 16- foot high marker SC. From that point, pick out the 16-foot flashing red “2” approximately 1 mile to the north-northwest. You’ll be able to pick out a well-marked channel leading off from San Carlos Bay into Matanzas Pass, making a 90 degree turn behind the northwestern hook of Estero Island.

The marina at the Pink Shell Beach Resort is located ¼ mile inside the no wake zone and is highly visible to starboard, adjacent to day beacon “13.”

Is the Pink Shell motorcycle friendly? I know you are a rider; how long have you been riding? What do you ride, and can you describe the riding you like to do? Where in southwest Florida do you ride? The Pink Shell is motorcycle friendly with some under cover parking. I’ve been riding motorcycles for more than 40 years. I currently ride a 2011 Harley-Davidson Electra Glide Classic. I like riding with small groups but at the same time enjoy the lone scoot once in a while. Since moving to Florida from Pennsylvania 14 years ago I’ve pretty much ridden all over Southwest and Central Florida, Daytona to Key West.

While we were there, we had a magnificent time; we never had to leave the resort. Tell us about the restaurants you have onsite and what they feature? Jacks located in the Captiva Villas at the Pink Shell Beach Resort and Marina features a bountiful daily breakfast buffet from 7:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Jacks is also the perfect venue for hosting group functions and beautiful evening wedding receptions

Bongo’s is our pool side beach side Bar and Grille featuring tropical beverages, light cuisine, signature sandwiches and flavorful floribbean cuisine for lunch and dinner.

Tell us about your Daytona location, and will you have rooms for Biktoberfest and Bike Week? Our sister property in Daytona is the The Plaza Resort and Spa, 600 N. Atlantic Avenue. It’s located right on the beach, central to all popular Daytona Beach attractions and things to do. The historic, beachfront Plaza Resort & Spa, Daytona Beach, FL is the perfect Daytona Beach hotels choice for couples and families. Book Review

Finz Finds Master Guide Book of Florida contains over 60 scenic back road rides for motorcycles. This is the perfect route planner tool for your next motorcycle road trip. The roads in this book are all paved, less traveled, and without freeways. There are many canopy rural back roads with shaded twists and turns, along with mileage for each road traveled. The rides are all mapped out with turn-by-turn directions with mileage and photos of all the roads. The rides are also stackable, meaning you can go from one ride to another and extend your journey. There is a listing of biker friendly restaurants, bars, visitor attractions, state parks, and campgrounds. Also, starting point coordinates and a ride index (with total time and mileage for each ride) are listed in each section of Florida. A CD comes with the book, so you can print out each ride and place the route in a tank pouch. The CD also has a photo slide show of all the roads. A FREE phone app is available for the book, making it easy to get you to the starting point of each ride. It can be downloaded at www.finzfinds.com. You automatically become part of the Scenic Ride Club when you purchase the Master Guide Book. This entitles you to the FREE phone app, FREE ride updates, and access to customized route planning service. Also, whenever new rides are released you will receive an email newsletter once a month. Craven Moorehead MEMORIAL DAY MEMORIALIZED

What a summer! Oh crap—wait it ain’t summer yet. I forgot we were just getting out of spring, but for some reason it certainly feels like it is summer. If it gets much hotter, I may consider a trip up north somewhere. Naw—forget that.… I’m stuck here for a while. Speaking of being stuck, I was absolutely stuck to my chair on the Sunday preceding the ‘day off’ on Monday thanks to this most important holiday. I learned that a lot of people don’t remember the true meaning of this particular holiday, and I won’t get into the details in a vain attempt to educate those who will not learn. “There are none as blind as those that will not see” is a phrase I heard in a southern Baptist church somewhere but as usual, I immediately digress. If Memorial Day were to be explained to a newcomer to this country then perhaps the best way to describe it is as a day upon which we remember the people whom gave up their lives in the service of our great country. Recently, a few media moguls and assorted liberals have attempted to ‘add in’ a variety of things that are at least “service related” but the main focus of this holiday in my humble opinion is to remember that select faction of individuals who gave the ultimate sacrifice while doing battle in defense of our country. Hell, my dad was an Army cook and wore a t-shirt with a skull and crossed fork and knife that said “Death from Within” I get the picture, but unlike some of his comrades, he didn’t die in the several conflicts that he participated in on the front lines. As in the

case of so many of our other loved ones, cancer took him out before he reached the tender age of 80. Hmmmm. It was stomach cancer. I wonder—I mean he must have eaten his own cooking. … Nevertheless, I still remember and revere those who did what they had to do and paid the ultimate price no matter what the outcome. For some of us simple rednecks, it is very much all about that remembering, and there is the additional benefit of a Sunday full of Auto Racing! Somehow I was able to miss the Gran Prix in Monaco, but I was able to catch the entire Indy 500 race and the Coke 600 in Charlotte. I must have not paid enough to the cable provider to see the Monaco race, or perhaps I slept through it. I’m not sure which, but I guarantee you that I was able to enjoy the full day and evening of all the 200MPH action that I could handle! Inundated with early cautions the 500 was a little bit disappointing at first but I had not started drinking at that time. During the lengthy cautions, I would go take out the trash, clean up something or at least act like I was participating in the family routine. In reality that day was one of my days that I intended to do absolutely nothing but watch racing and drink beer. At some point between the 500 and the 600 I actually DID do some things around the shop and the house, if for no other reason than just to stay clear of the Ol’ Lady and to look busy. Later on in the evening that guise wore short, and I was exposed for exactly what I really am. But I am good at what I can do, and if it involves NASCAR and beer, then I can justify my being glued to the chair and/or couch to enjoy those few hours of bliss. I started thinking about a few things while watching the cars go round and round at extreme speeds. I had often ridden my SE/SVO bagger with the 110 at well over

Let us know what you think of Craven Moorehead, info@borntoride.com

125MPH side by side with another similarly equipped Harley without any incident, but I often wonder how these drivers are able to operate these 4 wheeled vehicles in excess of 200MPH. With the NASCAR vehicles approaching 200 and the INDY vehicles exceeding 200MPH, I considered the reaction time, visibility with the changing atmosphere and the perils of hot-dog wrappers and other debris that could lead to calamity even without the rivalry often incurred while racing against other competitors. Vengeance can be had by a simple ‘bump and run’ in any form of racing. If I am riding too fast on the bike with like minded brothers on some deserted portion of the interstate that’s one thing, but I wasn’t getting paid to do it, and the simple enjoyment of doing it—as risky as it may be— seemed to be worth the possible ramifications on those particular occasions. I have driven a few Saturday night racecars that never went as fast as the bagger went, but these were local short-track hobby cars that cost ME and never paid much but a few bucks, a cheap plastic trophy or a decal that claimed you were a “Feature Winner.” I won’t say it wasn’t fun, but I don’t think I can afford to get back into that hobby. For what ever it’s worth, I still love all the aspects of racing in any form, and intend to continue to participate whether it’s on the bike, the chair or the couch. I will admit that there is nothing that exhilarates the soul like going really fast! I don’t think I can do that from the couch but I will try.… I un-ceremoniously celebrated Memorial Day by staying in and watching racing all day. I don’t feel too bad about that however due to the fact that the fallen were remembered in the pre-race ceremonies and during the actual competition. The NASCAR guys even replaced their own names on the windshields with those of warriors who paid the ultimate price. This is what America is all about. I still love my country and have lately developed even more fear of my government, but I would rather live here than anywhere else. I hope and pray that everyone remembers those who have served and continue to serve, whether we agree with the governmental fiasco or not. This is what it’s all about. Until next month, speed safely and continue to remember the people who serve. Craven BORNTORIDE.COM | BTR 69

FOUR HUNDRED THOUSAND STRONG

We came from all across the nation, And we rode our bikes to the Wall, We came from towns both large and small, We came to honor those that have given their all. Those names on the black granite are friends and relatives, The little boy down the street is on the Wall, They may be husbands, wives, or children, Their names are here for us, one and all.

You know you are not forgotten, You are loved by one and all. We gathered here from all points across the country, When we started our bikes and headed to the Wall, It would make a sane person wonder, It sounded like “Rolling Thunder.”

We might ride a Honda, BMW, or Harley, Those that we came to see don’t mind, Can you hear the voices talking to you? They speak so low and kind.

Why are all these people here? We are here to honor those on the Wall, We came in large numbers to show our respect, They are the ones that gave their lives, after all.

Where are our POW’s and MIA’s? Should they be on the Wall?

We came from the Army and the Marines, We came from the Air Force, Navy,

We are here for our brothers and sisters, We are here to thank those that went before us, We are not here to discuss if “it” was right or wrong, Together, here to stand, four hundred thousand strong.

Spyke & Mike Well there my BTR friends, Marson and his awesome Know Tow truck got us back home safe and sound. If you need a transport, this company is top notch! So they unload the Fat Bird in the garage and Mike has his work cut out for him, hunting around for inner and outer primary covers and a clutch assembly. One damned rock really screwed up the end of our trip and the Fat Birds’ gizzard. That’s OK, the dog days of June with hot weather and daily thunderstorms are upon us. So, parking the scoot and opting for beach time makes me just as happy. I like it when Mike takes me to where the land meets the water. Even though I enjoy cooling down with my wings in the wind, the gulf can also bring on the same relief. Plus, it gives Mike a workout. He gets to lug chairs, cooler, umbrella, blanket, towels, and some food down to the beach. Why he brings all that, I’m not sure. He says it’s for my comfort. I think he’s nuts. I’m just happy with my talons in the sand and water under my wings. Well I am a bird, next of kin to Donald Duck and unfortunately in the same family as those squawking sky rats. Better known to you mortals as seagulls. Now, I’m not a swimmer but give me a boogie board and all is good! Riding the big waves is just as fun to me as flying on the Fat Bird. It also gives Mike some sun time so that his white body can catch up to the biker tan he gets from being on the scoot. We find a spot close to where the sand and surf collide. Mike gets everything all laid out and begins to soak in the sun. He says to me, “Spyke, this here is another reason why we live in Florida. Toes in the sand and a drink in the hand! Open a cold one for me before you run off and do some bird surfing.” I cackle, “Hell yeah!” I pop a top and go down to check out the waves. I come back after briefly testing the waters and there are already various empty cans and open bags of chips lying around Mike. He sits up and says, “Spyke, lugging all this stuff to the beach, setting up, and enjoying lunch has left me thinking about exercising.” I cackle, “About your lack of it? And don’t tell me your recent 12-ounce curls in the last half hour count for something.” He blurts out, “Well sort of. I’m finally getting my head together and now my body is falling apart. I’ve come to the conclusion that it

has been a lot easier getting older than it has been getting wiser.” I cover my eyes with one wing and cackle, “You’re one can shy of a six-pack and all foam with no beer.” Mike responds as he turns and looks into the cooler, “Are you sure about that? Anyways, I figured it out, when we get older we get heavier. Only because there’s a lot more information in our heads. Add into account that it’s hard to lose weight due to the fact that our bodies have become good friends with our fat. So in turn, it makes parting ways with good friends very hard to do. And when the little guy on my right shoulder tells me to say the word exercise, the little guy on my left shoulder commands me to wash my mouth out with chips and beer.” I roll my eyes and screech, “I think the cheese has slid off your cracker.” Mike’s knee jerk comeback is, “Not this time! All I brought was chips and dip. But I have a few more thoughts I’d better tell ya before they’re lost in space.” I chuckle, “Would that be the place between your ears?” Mike groans, “Yes Spyke, my blonde think tank, information portal, and hat hangar. Now where was I? Oh yes, while lying here I was thinking to myself the only reason I would take up walking with this much stuff every day to the beach is so that I can hear heavy breathing again. I also figured that I’d better do it quick and early before my brain realizes what the hell is going on and puts a stop to it. And the way I see it, if carrying a lot of stuff and walking was good for you, the postman would be immortal. But I really feel I’ve gotten a lot of exercise since turning 50. At 52, I’m just now getting over the hill. Don’t get me wrong Spyke, I’ve begun to like very long walks, especially when they are taken by all the losers in the world that annoy me!” I groan and cackle back, “Mike, you are an experiment in artificial stupidity and need a checkup from the neck up! Let’s get out from under this umbrella and away from the cooler and chips. I need some wave time and you need to soak in the salt water for a long time. Maybe the pickling effect will help you lose some of those dumb brain cells you’ve been using.” Mike replies, “This time you might be right Spyke. Let’s go while the surfs up!” I waddle down to the water’s edge with Mike trailing. He places me on the boogie board and drags me out into the Gulf of Mexico. Getting my wings in the wind as Mike gets his heels in the sand, he pushes me onto the next big wave. SPYKE

It is so great to get to go to various biker events, be they big events like Bike Week, Biketoberfest, and Leesburg Bikefest or a small local event put on by local dealerships and shops. It’s also great to come together for a benefit poker run, an annual party or a clubhouse open event. There are just too many events to name them all. But they all have one thing in common, lots of people having fun reconnecting with each other. It’s good to see old friends and swap news and

events that have been going on in our lives, to see the latest ride, or just have a refreshing drink while sitting in the shade listening to some great tunes being played by the band. There are often numerous vendors at these events to find that new patch or piece of chrome that you just can’t do without. By the way, don’t forget about all the funnel cakes, sausages, and ice cream; those are all worth telling our friends about so they can get some too! The common denominator in all of this is people telling people about what is important in their lives, and what they have been doing since the last visit. It’s an opportunity to share what has been really good, or in some cases, what hasn’t been so good, and talk about the things of life that make the difference in how we feel life has been treating us. Regardless of our backgrounds or our affiliations, almost everyone will at some point open their mouth and begin to share how life has been, it has a healing touch. Those who walk with the Lord have a mandate on their lives to share from their lives, so that others may see Jesus and the hope and peace

He offers. That command comes from Acts 1:8, “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” See, it’s a natural thing to share our lives when folks come together with friends. We may share our joys, our trials, our challenges, or our opportunities. Those who walk with the Lord naturally tell others about how He has been blessing their lives and the hope He has provided when things may have seemed difficult. Most of all, we share the victories we have experienced in our lives and the joys we find in those answers. When we trust truly Jesus to be our Savior, we become filled with His Spirit, and we want to tell the world how great this new peace is. And we are to keep telling others what we have experienced no matter how far we may travel. Next time you are at an event, remember to share with another what Jesus has done for you! In the Wind, Denny Dingler
