I rarely ask for help or donations and truly prefer to be the one giving however, I do have a favor to ask. Our son is just one of the super kids on The Dover Florida Bullets Baseball Team. This is a baseball team of upstanding 12 year old boys that are worthy of a once in a life time opportunity to play ball in the Baseball Capital of America, Cooperstown, NY at the end of July. Baseballs history is everywhere in Cooperstown! It’s Home of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum along with Doubleday Field where some say baseball was invented. The boys have been molded by great coaching that reminds
them to be gentlemen, good sports and that family and school work is monument. The boys have been tasked with fundraising for their own trip and have been working very hard to earn their own way…. and they are SO close! I’m trying to help them cross that finish line by reaching out to the biker community. Please consider a small donation to help these boys meet their final goal to take the trip. Show them how the biker community cares! You can send a check, money order, use the GoFund Me Account or if you have any questions, call: 813-661-9402. All checks payable to the Dover Bullets. Thank you for your support!

THE REAR-ENDER
It’s the soundtrack to every motorcyclist’s nightmare: you’re sitting astride your bike at an intersection, patiently waiting for the red light to change to green, when you hear the screech of tires. Next you’re flying through the air and into the intersection. You’ve just been rear-ended by an inattentive driver who was too busy dialing his cell phone to notice you stopped at the red light. Strategy: Remember, even to attentive drivers, motorcycles are difficult to see—especially at night. Remain aware of the fact that drivers approaching an intersection may not see you. Frequently check your mirrors to monitor traffic approaching from the rear, keeping an eye out for fast-moving traffic approaching from behind. Flash your brake light. If you do notice a car speeding toward you, move to one side or another to get out of its way. Don’t shift into neutral when stopped at an intersection. Keep your bike in gear, so you can quickly escape if a dangerous situation arises. For more info www.msf-usa.org

Craven Moorehead
Waco, TX: 9 dead, 20 wounded, 177 arrested in Gestapo style police action
An unbelievable and inconceivable blow has been dealt to the entire biker community. Not just club members, but anyone that rides a motorcycle has been affected by this terrible incident. As readers of the region’s most popular biker magazine, most of you read this publication to be informed, entertained and supported. As a contributor to this entity for over a decade, I feel the necessity to come clean about some of the things that I know and a few of the things that I have experienced in that dark yet enlightening life known by most as the “1%er culture” that so many have formed their own opinions upon. The fact is, there are three sides to every story. Some of the ‘truth’ hasn’t been told. Whether you like it or not, we as bikers all have a particular bond, and I have the fourth side to the story. If you are a Bandido, you are a member of a 1% motorcycle club that has a vast history and a very large membership. Some sources state the Bandidos MC is the second largest club on the planet and it became a ‘club’ in 1966. As a 1%er you have ultimate dedication to your brothers, your motorcycle, and the open road. The bond that is formed in a 1% club is a lot stronger than any similar type of organization. The regulated media and society in general usually regard 1% clubs as “Gangs” and oft times replace fear with respect. Secrecy and silence are things that are feared BTR 12 | BORNTORIDE.COM
by most folks, and if you are a 1%er you will usually keep your business to yourself and not broadcast it publicly to anyone. A 1%er will stand his ground in any situation that arises, and if not provoked will give respect where respect is due. All 1% club members have great respect for their country, family, and their freedom to associate. If you are a Cossack, you are not a member of a 1% organization and likely should not be flying a “Texas” bottom rocker. The media touts that the police issued a report that stated, “The group was working to grow its presence in Texas by eating into the Bandidos turf.” The group had recently “started wearing the Texas rocker on the bottom of their vests without the approval of the Bandidos,” the bulletin said. “Traditionally, the Bandidos have been the dominant motorcycle club in Texas and no other club is allowed to wear the Texas rocker without their consent. If the club refuses, Bandidos members will attempt to remove the vest by force from the member. Such actions led to several alleged attacks, assaults and robberies according to police, who feared the two factions were on the verge of a full-out war.” If you are a Cop, you are a member of a much larger and more corrupt organization than either of the aforementioned clubs. As a member of law enforcement you will agree with the media slant on gang violence. As stated above, a LEO is responsible for releasing the foreboding forecast regarding the indifference and tension between these clubs to the hungry press. Some reports indicated that the MC culture is akin to notorious street gangs like the “Bloods,” “Crips” and others. Unlike MC organizations, cops are evidently allowed to turn a restaurant parking lot into a shooting gallery without any respect to public safety, local ordinances, or fear of future ramifications. Some have called this ‘getting away with murder.’ Hey—don’t shoot me; I just report the news.
An incredible injustice has been done to the global biker community
It is alleged by an eyewitness at the Twin Peaks restaurant in Waco on that fateful day, that a Cossack member fired a single shot into a Bandidos member’s arm. The barrage of gunfire that followed this action was, according to this witness (and many
“Wackos in Waco”
others) in fact was initiated entirely by law enforcement officers who were already on the scene. It was also said that “when 10 to 12 Bandido members arrived at the restaurant, they were surrounded by a very large group of Cossack members and the incident occurred even before the Banditos had parked or removed their helmets.” There was no ‘fire-fight’ according to witnesses and the needless deaths and injuries were all at the hands of law enforcement. Why, you ask did all this happen? This is my best effort at a reasonable explanation—where actually there is no reasoning. I wasn’t there, and I am fairly glad that I wasn’t. This is all I have learned from my research: On this particular day at the Twin Peaks restaurant there was a regular “Confederation of Clubs” meeting taking place and several varieties of clubs and bikers were in attendance. Many of you may be familiar with your local COC which are regional entities that bring education to all patch holders and bikers in general. No person or club is asked to ‘not attend’ to my knowledge and these meetings are designed to be solely educational and informative. COC meetings, for those uninformed is (in some cases) just a lawyer sponsored event where persons who are either in a motorcycle club or those who are friends, supporters or perhaps just curious about the club experience gather to learn about legislation, biker trends & safety issues related to the region, and generally educate each other in the overall biker camaraderie. Each COC is pretty much grounded in similar guidelines, so for the purpose of this report and the future of these organizations I will not try to single out the difference between those that are local vs. those that claim to be national. It pretty much comes down to the fact that most MC organizations have some sort of internal structure that binds them together, and the COC will allow the varying clubs to express the difference in each individual club and their guidelines. I have attended many of these meetings all over the US and have never witnessed any violence or altercations such as the incident in Waco. I have stood side by side (and sometimes toe to toe) with clubs that allegedly (according to the cops) had beef with my club. Yeah, there was always a huge police presence, Feds with fancy video equipment, and an array of strange looking ‘bikers with badges’ who stood out in the crowd like a sore thumb. Never have I encountered the level of debauchery that the Waco LEOs let loose on this day.
27 vehicles seized, 488 weapons found—bloodthirsty cops at the scene Shooting fish in a barrel is another term used in some of the eyewitness stories that I have read. Most of the accounts reveal that all of the people killed at the scene were shot by police weapons. The cops deny that story and some reports in the media say that the multi-jurisdictional murder-squad, are only claiming responsibility for 4 or 5 of the deaths. Even ONE is too much! I for one know that when you go to Texas you are in an
‘open carry’ state where almost every citizen is armed. Much like Florida—Bikers and Bankers alike, they all carry out there. Therefore, the presence of an armed public shouldn’t be an excuse for cops to get target practice on the public, even if they have previously ‘profiled’ them as dangerous bikers, or ‘gang’ members. After all the killing was done, people who were in the Twin Peaks and an adjacent business (if they fit the profile as a biker) were dragged out into the bloody parking lot and ordered to stay on the ground until the cops could bind their hands with oversized wire-ties. Buses rolled in to carry ‘detainees’ to another location to be questioned, searched, and booked into the jail. Each person charged appeared before a judge and were held on a $1,000,000.00 (yes One MILLION dollars) bond and many are still incarcerated under what the Leos refer to as RICO charges. I will not get into the ruse that is ‘RICO’ for the sake of brevity. The Government’s RICO act is a 3 page story (read lie) in itself. Again, I was not in attendance at this particular COC meeting. There are a plethora of stories out there from people who were there and the families of the falsely jailed. They all can’t be wrong. According to The Waco Tribune-Herald, some bikers who had their bonds lowered to $25,000 have had other conditions included in the bond agreements including they stay out of McLennan County except for court dates, wear ankle monitors, abide by curfews, and don’t associate with biker groups. Remember, these people were not necessarily patch holders! In all cases the bond reduction required the accused to sign a document stating the (cops) had the ultimate right to arrest them as charged and they would NOT sue the cops, city, county or state for the false arrest and egregious bond. I mistakenly thought I lived in America. Many families and homes have been ruined due to the breadwinner being held in a Gestapo like action that had police profiling written all over it. Nine families of patch holders are burying their husbands, fathers, and family members due to a sad exhibit of police hate, anger, and power. Allegedly, a multitude of weapons were found on the scene— featuring very few firearms the vast range of so called ‘weapons’ varied from pocket knives to wallet chains to nail clippers. Yeah, the next time I get into an altercation I am gonna whip out my nail-clippers and yell “I’m gonna cut you to the quick MFer!” This is the most ridiculous situation I’ve ever seen. I’ve been a biker pretty much all my life and I can tell you—tell you ALL—as bikers this action affects each and every one of us. Speed safely everyone and keep your eyes and ears open. All is not as it seems.

I want to start this month’s Women’s World: An EQ Lifestyle with two quotes that when combined best define EQ: “True success is not measured by material possession but by personal life fulfillments: making happiness the journey, not just the destination.” Hayley B Colina “Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma—which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.” Steve Jobs On Saturday, May 30, I had privilege to join Joe Simpson of Jaw Droppin’ Customs at the Cancer Awareness Car & Motorcycle Show Open House. Joe built a custom tow truck as a tribute to all who are affected with cancer—over one hundred names of individuals are displayed. The names
represent the survivors who are in remission, the battlers who are currently undergoing treatment, and those who have succumb to this dreaded disease. I was there to help with the unveiling of the 1st Response Towing “Cancer Killa” tow truck: A rolling tribute. Although the day was a typical summer scorcher, motorcycles and custom cars showed up all to share in the joyous occasion. I noticed many sponsors set up along the alley way, as well as food and drink vendors. There was music, raffles, and of course the Born To Ride TV crew was on hand to record the event. By midafternoon everyone headed to the back parking lot for the official unveiling of Cancer Killa. Joe personally introduced and thanked the sponsors and those involved with the project. I was called upon to welcome all the guests and to speak a few words of inspiration, and then Joe gave the

word and the garage door opened. As the engine was fired up, total silence fell over the guests. When the massive truck rolled out, cameras and cell phones were whipped out to record the tribute truck. As I walked around this beautiful vehicle, I noticed my name on the driver’s door and suddenly a feeling of inner happiness rushed through me. At that moment all was right with my world—yes, I was here to see it! That was only part of the past few months. The Thunder Beach Rally was held at the beginning of May. Although I did not attend, I want to extend congratulations to my friends at Harley-Davidson of Panama City Beach and Indian of Panama City Beach. For many bikers in Florida, especially here on the West Coast of the state, you say the name “Peggy’s Corral” and many will say, “I’ve been there! I know right where it is!” Peggy’s Corral is a biker bar for the biker and non-biker alike! For those who have been to Peggy’s, you know what I’m talking about. For those reading this article and you haven’t been to Peggy’s, then you need to make plans to attend the big Born To Ride Great American Biker Bash! This will be held on Sunday, July 26! Peggy’s Corral, located on scenic US 41 in Palmetto, has a history unlike many other businesses. I had the pleasure of spending some time with Debbie Toner, co-owner of Peggy’s. Debbie, along with her husband Terry (also lovingly known as Rip) are no strangers to owning a bar. They owned Poor Man’s Inn in Michigan. It was a very large bar that would sit over 400 people; it had a full bar, large stage, and full working kitchen. When the Toners came down to visit in Florida, they ended up buying a home. While here, they would stop in at Peggy’s Place every Friday night. The owner at that time was Margaret Arch (aka Peggy). Peggy decided at age 68 it was time to sell the bar because she was very tired and wanted to get out from underneath it. “Rip and I talked about buying Peggy’s Place and decided it would be better for us to own this bar since it was smaller in size and wouldn’t have the expense like the one we had up in Michigan.” Debbie added, “Given that the bar was already here we didn’t want to change the name because everyone knew it. So eventually, we changed the word Place with the word Corral.” The first year came with some major bumps in the road. Shaking her head at the memories, Debbie explained. “Oh my God! I wanted to walk out after a few months of being open. This bar was known as the “Knife and Gun Club.” We spent a lot of time BTR 34 | BORNTORIDE.COM
cleaning it up, making it safe, and bringing in a nicer clientele. We don’t allow fighting or drugs here. We got it up to a level that we needed. It was bad. It was filthy, dirty. Miss Peggy was tired! She took one day off a week. She had a husband and he had a job outside of the bar. She didn’t have enough help. She was sorry when she sold it to us. Just recently, Miss Peggy said to me, ‘I never thought you would be able to make this work.’ It did work! It wasn’t put on the map by word of mouth and media outlets (Born To Ride) until we got it. The road ahead of the new owners of Peggy’s was a bumpy one. “We basically gutted the original building. The bar itself was deteriorating. It needed a lot of work. We cleaned it up and over the years have been adding to the business.” When they first obtained Peggy’s, there was a swamp in the back. Now, there is a beautifully blacktop parking lot and a Tiki Bar complete with a comfortable misting system for these hot, summer days in Florida! Debbie’s role is multi-faceted, to say the least! “I do the books, set up the entertainment, and make sure the girls have everything they need—basically the event coordinator at Peggy’s.” Her husband Rip is a major player in Peggy’s success as well. Debbie said, “Rip is the man that loves this bar. He loves to associate with everyone. He’s really good about that. He comes in here very early every morning to get everything ready to open by 7 a.m. He makes everyone comfortable. He used to stay here all hours of the night, but because of our great staff we can go home at a decent hour. You know that song, “I Love This Bar?” Well, Rip really loves this bar and everyone in it.” Customers come from near and far to visit. “We get people locally, from across the Sunshine Bridge, to the other side of the state, and down south. We are always making improvements. We want it to be nice
and comfortable for our customers to make them want to come back.” Recently, Debbie and Rip purchased the property next door to Peggy’s. Their goal is to make more room for parking, expand the bar, and possibly install a small kitchen. Debbie’s mind doesn’t stand still for a minute. She is constantly thinking of improving, adding, and creating something different and fun for her customers and community. “I’m going to start getting involved in concerts. My first one will be of 1980s hair bands and I’m calling it ‘80s at the Corral.’ We’re all going to dress up like the 1980s and there will be contests and fun all day long. This will be our first experiment. We will have two stages and the parking lot will be blocked off as well. Parking will be at the Elks Club. This will be held on September 20. All the proceeds will go to All Children’s Hospital.” I asked Debbie about the charities that are close to her heart. “Children, Animals, Schools, Veterans … all of these are very special to me. My grandson was in the All Children’s Hospital about 8 years ago. The care and the love is unbelievable. They had a much-quicker diagnosis for him than the local doctors here in town. All Children’s Hospital gave my daughter and her husband a place to stay while their son was in their care. They got a room, food, and everything they needed in order to be by his side. If you’ve never been to that hospital, you should go and visit. It will change the way you think about this world. The pain and suffering of the kids who have cancer; they are so strong and brave. The staff is very attentive to the kids, the parents, the grandparents—whomever—I have a lot of respect for that hospital!” The Born To Ride Great American Biker Bash is one that people look forward to year after year! Everyone at Peggy’s is busy working on the agenda for this yearly event! “On July 26, we will have our Biker Bash; we are also calling it ‘A Salute to Freedom.’ What we
What: The Born To Ride Great American Biker Bash—A Salute to Freedom, PeggysCorral.net
do on this day is a special 2:00 p.m. flag raising ceremony with the Am Vets. This flag raising ceremony shows support to our local veterans and those who have served—past and present—in the service. In addition to the vets, we will have biker games, the popular BTR Bike Show, wrestling, and other things we haven’t done before!” Debbie is very passionate about the veterans. “We are supporting the past, present, and future veterans. Every year, we want to do something to honor our veterans. I bring awareness to our vets; we do a speech to let them know how much we appreciate them. In addition, we’re giving away two kegs of beer in honor of them. We do a lot for Wounded Warrior’s Project as well. We do whatever they need us to do for them. If they come to me and ask me to do a benefit for a veteran, we will help. No problem.” Live music is going to be plentiful at this event! “We’ve got three bands lined up for that day: ‘Drive,’ ‘Know It All,’ and ‘Katalyst.’ Drive is a band that comes down here three times a year. They love to play and awesome to work with. I love them. Katalyst, our local band, play classic rock on a higher scale very well.” The crew at Peggy’s Corral is probably the best at customer service in the area! Debbie is very quick to address the success of the bar because of her dedicated and hardworking staff. “We have a very awesome staff. The main thing is customer service; without customers, we are nobody.” I was very impressed with the staff at Peggy’s when I arrived to do this interview. Smiles and great attitude greeted me. You can’t beat that anywhere you go! Debbie’s heart is huge. In addition, she is a very humble and proud business owner. She is a strong believer in paying it forward every day. She explains, “If God has given me the right to be here and I’m a good person, I’m going to continue to give and do for others.
That’s what He wants me to do. So if I’m able to do this and help those in need, that’s what I’m going to do! If you can touch someone’s heart in one day and make someone happy, then you’ve done a great thing.” Debbie and Rip have had a long-standing relationship with Born To Ride—17 years to be exact! “We have been growing together year after year. Our relationship has gotten stronger over the years. I am committed to them because of everything they do for me. My loyalty is to the magazine only. We’ve done some TV stories together so people do know where Peggy’s is. The magazine let’s everyone know where we are. Our next goal that Ron and his staff will be working on is to have our website refurnished. It’s going to be more user-friendly and eye-catching. Then after that, we will be doing e-mail blasts to our customers and friends. They are also designing a QR code for us as well. We keep finding new things to do with one another and it’s something that we both enjoy.” During our visit, I noticed immediately the nice looking Peggy’s Corral t-shirt Debbie was wearing. I asked her to tell me about them. “We finally have a beautiful t-shirt display case! I’ve been looking for great t-shirts that are lightweight and comfortable to wear. I always sell out of our t-shirts! Now, we have a beautiful display case that has our popular t-shirts for everyone to buy—for $10!” The shirt was extremely light-weight, and very attractive. It even has sparkles in the material! Many people may not be aware, but Debbie is a biker! In addition to running one of the most popular biker bars in south west Florida, Debbie gets some wind therapy, too! “I have a Can Am Spyder. I tried two wheels but I’m not very good at it. I was scared of it. Three wheels are different. I had a Honda Goldwing and a few other bikes in my life. This by far, is my favorite bike out of all of them!” Debbie tries to take one day out of the week
to ride, but her time is very limited. “One of my employees’ dad came to Florida to visit. He wanted to go bike riding with us but didn’t have a bike. So he rode with me. We took the River Run ride up to Ruskin and back. That was a really nice day and one that I enjoyed immensely.” Peggy’s Corral is ever-evolving. Debbie has some goals in sight for her bar—possibly a small kitchen! Now, the only food that is available is when vendors come and set up on the weekends. “My goal is to have a small kitchen set up where we can cook some burgers, fries, wings—the type of food the bikers enjoy with their drinks. I don’t like to turn people away.” As we started closing up our conversation, Debbie told me that the one thing she is proud of is that for every person who walks through her doors be comfortable and feel like a part of our family. “If they want to come to a bar that is safe, where all walks of life are welcomed, they will get treated good and waited on. What more can one ask for? Everyone will have a good time here. If they don’t it’s probably more than likely they created that drama themselves.” If you like to fight, forget about coming out to Peggy’s. It’s not tolerated for a millisecond! Debbie said, “If you fight here, you are bared for life. End of conversation!” Last words, Debbie? “I like that fact that we are still here. We did this. We built this from the ground up. The money wasn’t given to us; we used our own money! It’s been a lot of blood, sweat, and tears. Our success is due to the hard work we’ve put into this place. We are truly blessed by our customers, friends, and employees!” All of us at Born To Ride look forward to seeing YOU at the BTR Great American Biker Bash at Peggy’s Corral. You won’t be disappointed! See you then!

In May, we headed out to the largest 3-day motorcycle event in the world! The Leesburg Bike Fest! This year marked the 19th anniversary of this huge event that draws hundreds of thousands of bikers and pumps millions of dollars into the local community. The world famous Rats Hole Bike Contest is held here, with the best of the best competing while dozens and dozens of bands kept the live music coming. One of the major players in this event is familyowned Gator Harley-Davidson. They open up their huge parking lot to vendors and hold a continuous party the whole weekend! We interviewed the family members who keep this dealership humming. Debbie Galletti: Hi! I’m Debbie and I’m
here at Leesburg Bike Fest; coined the largest 3-day event in the world! I think they are right! This is Greg Thorpe who is the president of the Downtown Association in Leesburg. I think they have that right about this being the largest 3-day event in the world! Greg Thorpe: Yes! The Leesburg Partnership has boasted this is the largest 3-day motorcycle event. This started off as a little motorcycle ride that started in a parking lot. As you can see, it has grown slightly from there. We have over 300,000 people covering all of Lake County, instead of a little parking lot. Debbie: It’s crazy out here now! Leesburg is a beautiful area. Tell us a little of what
80+Concerts, 300+Vendors, 12+Venues, Hotbody Contests, Bike Shows and more.
Leesburg has to offer and what draws everybody from this area. Greg: Everybody loves our little community. We have some of the greatest lakes around; fishing, boating, quaint areas, and friendly people. People love coming in and seeing how nice everybody is. We’re just that “typical downtown” that you hear about and love to go to! Debbie: You also have a great surrounding area that offers a lot of golfing and golfing resorts as well. Greg: Absolutely! We’ve got great course here called Mission Inn that partners with us. We also have hundreds of other golf courses here as well. This started 19 years ago as a small BORNTORIDE.COM | BTR 39
motorcycle event. And every year, we put a lot back into it. We partner with people such as Progressive, Budweiser, Lake County Tourism, Lake County and the City of Leesburg, to try to make this event happen. We also work with hundreds of non-profits out there—everybody comes out here together. This is a community event and the community really comes out here to make this happen. Debbie: The downtown area as well, too! They open their doors to the bikers. The bikers love the brick-paved roads and sidewalks that you have, and the shade! It’s really a nice, homey atmosphere! Greg: We love to see this many people down here. As a town of 22,000 grows to 250,000-plus, it’s great to see that many people in our shops. My wife has a little BTR 40 | BORNTORIDE.COM
shop down here! She opens her doors and welcomes everybody! You never know it’s here; a lot of times you ease by because there are so many things to see during the event, but a great little spot to come back to. Debbie: Ok. Let’s talk a little about the activities here. You get some of the biggest named concert venues for free. You offer that here at the bike fest. Greg: Absolutely! We have 85 concerts going on during the event. They are all free to the public. We invest a lot of time and effort to bring big names here so everybody can have a great time and try to keep the money in their pockets and spend here with the local merchants and give back to the local non-profits here to make everything go together.
Debbie: The Rat’s Hole Bike Show is usually over the top. Teddy’s running that. This year, you have the Badass Bagger Class sponsored by Lucky You Cycles. It’s really a nice show! Greg: The bikes were wrapped around the buildings; further than I’ve ever seen. Everybody wanted to come out this year and participate. It was a great event. Debbie: The low riders and the sound systems are what’s popular this year, let me tell you—with the bagger market. Let’s talk about the vendors here! You always do a great job organizing the vendors every year. Greg: We’ve got a fantastic staff that works hard to communicate with the vendors. Because it is a 3-day event, they get a lot more bang for their buck because people

come here for a short period of time. The vendors get to come in, set up, and get their sales, then hopefully relax in our community. Debbie: And I’ll tell you, the three day weekend event goes on all day and all night. It is a great opportunity for vendors; it’s a great venue for them. Greg: We encourage all vendors; we have small vendors and we have large vendors. We’ve got all kinds of things here. I had some roasted corn that was fantastic! There are t-shirts, of course, and any leather items you can possibly imagine! Debbie: This morning I got myself a pancake from Flo of Progressive Insurance! It had the little icon on the pancake! It was dusted with powder sugar! That was awesome! Greg: Absolutely! Flo was giving away free pancakes this morning. They also have a nice booth out here with free shaves and boot shines. They have done a fantastic job! Debbie: Now, Leesburg is located in the heart of Florida, the center of Florida. The destination ride here you just can’t beat! The roads leading into Leesburg are fantastic. I think what makes your venue so attractive is the ride here. Greg: Lots of little small towns, lots of quaint communities on the outskirts, lots of lakes and back roads makes it great for riding. Being located in the center of the state makes it an easy ride to Daytona, BTR 44 | BORNTORIDE.COM
Orlando, and to the interstates—so you can get to anywhere you want to be in a short amount of time. Debbie: What does this do to the economic impact for the communities surrounding Leesburg? Greg: It’s really unbelievable. We were fortunate enough to be able to do an economic study a couple years ago. I believe the number was $200 million that this event brought to our community locally. That’s just an unbelievable number! That doesn’t affect our core-town here of Leesburg; it affects Lake County and beyond. We fill every motel within a 25-mile radius with people for this weekend. Debbie: Thank goodness the camping is available too, right? Greg: Absolutely! We’ve got lots of places to camp. A lot of the people that come love the motorcyclists. Many bring their RVs with the motorcycles in the back, hand out at the campgrounds and have a good time. Debbie: You make it a good weekend! Well, Greg, I want to thank you for letting me pick your brain here and all the information about this event. Now, next year, is the 20th anniversary party! How can Leesburg top what they are doing here for the 20th year? Greg: Well I can tell you that I am personally amazed every year at what our staff does to up the ante. In bringing
in major sponsors like Progressive and Budweiser, that allows us to put the money back into the fund that make all these things happen. The big projection screens at main stage, all of these nice things all around us we couldn’t do without the help of our partners. Debbie: I noticed also that there are a lot of safety aspects here that you put into this rally which is really nice. Greg: We want a very friendly event. We want everybody to go home safely. We have a large crew that spends a lot of time and effort to make sure you don’t see a lot of “behind the scenes” that makes all this happen. Safety is a primary concern. Debbie: And it starts on Day 1 until you shut the door Sunday night? Greg: Pretty much! This is a HUGE undertaking for such a small town. We would never be able to make this happen without the help from all of our community sponsors. Debbie: Well let’s wrap this up here! The Leesburg Bike Fest, 19th year, and next year is the 20th anniversary. If you’re interested in becoming involved in this, you certainly have a target audience that will come right to your product. We can pretty much guarantee this by working with the Leesburg downtown area. Greg, how do we get in touch with the Leesburg Partnership? Greg: LeesburgPartnership.com, Leesburg

Bike Fest that you can look up on line, Leesburg, Florida. Look us up, give us a call, and we’ll help you any way we can. We would love to have you! Debbie: Get in on some of this action! Leesburg Bike Fest! What a success! Congratulations Greg to you and all of your staff! Debbie: We’re here at Leesburg Bike Fest. Half of the activities take place downtown and the other half take place here at Gator Harley-Davidson! They have been a part of the Leesburg Partnership and the Leesburg Bike Fest for 19 years now! They have a lot of action going on here in this parking lot and they are giving away a motorcycle! Stay tuned as we go inside to talk with Johnny Malik Jr., Jr., Jr, I think! It’s a family generation taking over the Gator HarleyDavidson! Like I told you, we are here at Gator Harley-Davidson. The Leesburg Bike Fest would NOT be a part if you didn’t visit the Gator Harley-Davidson! And we’ve got the next generation here of the Malik’s that have brought this party up another notch, another level! This is Johnny Malik and Rachel Malik. This is Steve’s daughter and Johnny’s son. Guys, you are bringing some spice, some activity, and some action to the Leesburg party now! Johnny: That’s right! We are happy to be
representing for our family. We’re the third generation. We look forward to bringing in a new generation to the dealership and to the business as a whole. Debbie: That’s great! And Rachel, you’re in charge of motor clothes. You’ve got some great styles and clothes plus have some great things happening as well! Rachel: We’ve got a lot of new things, a lot of new t-shirts, and a new back of the t-shirt with our new logo on it. New sales every day, especially tomorrow. We’re kickin’ ass in there! Debbie: So with this party out here. You take this parking lot and make it a lot of fun for people. What do you do? Johnny: Well, we have all kinds of vendors from painters to accessories for your bikes like lights. Anything you can really think of. Good food, good music, and alcohol of course! Debbie: Rachel, as a parent, I have children looking in on my business, too. It makes a parent proud that the children want to follow the parents and be a part of the family. Is that what they synergy that takes place here with the Malik family? Rachel: Yes, definitely! I just got my new bike in January. My father has seen me grow up in this place. He’s scared but he’s excited for me to be in this biker world. Debbie: In this area, the people know that

Malik name and the Malik family. It takes a team that goes beyond the Malik’s. Do you have a good team, a good following that help you out? Johnny: It does! We have over 40 employees that are working with us on events like this. We bring in lots of other employees that help. We all work very hard. We try to make it as fun as successful as we can. Debbie: You guys are representing very well here today. Leesburg Bike Fest is going to celebrate the 20th year next year in 2016. I’m sure you’re going to be a big part of the success next year as well. I’m sure you’re looking forward to it? Johnny: Very much so. We can’t wait to kick off the 20th anniversary party. It will be great! Rachel: The 21st year is going to be the biggest one, I think! Debbie: Oh! 21! I see! Someone has something special planned for the 21st anniversary! We’re here at Leesburg Bike Fest at Gator Harley-Davidson with the Malik generation; Johnny and Rachel. Both doing a great job here, taking on and helping with the family here. I think you guys are kicking it up a notch her for the youth of the motorcycle community too. Johnny: Right. Very much so! We’re trying

to get the younger generation in here. There’s a lot of younger riders out there so we want to bring them our way and show them what we’re all about. Debbie: Hey Johnny and Steve! This is your time to take off and start riding! Turn the keys over to the mavericks here! You’re on your own! Stay tuned! We’ve got more coming from Born To Ride! Debbie: We’re continuing with the story here at Gator Harley-Davidson with the Malik family. This is Steve Malik and his daughter, Alex. Steve, your daughter grew up in this business taking over the helm and running the front end here at guest services. Steve: It’s a great thing! My brother’s son and my daughters just bought motorcycles. Everybody rides in the family! It’s a great feeling to have my kids here
Debbie: It gives you a little bit of time and a break to get away and ride a bit? Steve: In due time it’s going to happen. They are set to take over. They can’t wait for me to leave, I bet! Debbie: Well tell us! You grew up in this business. This is your families business Steve: Yeah, of course! They told me they were going to get a bikes since I brought them into this business. So, they did! It’s a nervous thing in my stomach having my daughters out on motorcycles. But I can’t say no. They are a part of the business! Debbie: Alex, you’re the front line here. Tell me what you do. Alex: I do a lot of things. I started out folding t-shirts in motor clothes. Then I moved my way up to marketing, then Internet marketing, then to receptionist, answering phones, helping customers with

whatever I can help them with by giving them direction because apparently people are confused when they walk in here; “Where’s service?” I do a lot of Internet Marketing and Facebook. I wear a lot of hats. With the Bike Fest, I worked in the parts department helping out. Debbie: So you’re a unique operation here at Gator Harley-Davidson and Stormy Hill. You’ve got family there, too. Steve: Yes, my sisters run Stormy Hill Harley-Davidson in Clermont. I’m looking forward to the girls and my nephew taking over. Debbie: These people know what they’re doing. It’s a family generation of learning and growing with this business. It didn’t fall off the cherry tree out there; they jump right in! In recognition of the 68th Hollister Freedom Rally
The entire review could be summed up in a sentence: “This film created an image and a lifestyle that yet endures.” Yes, the image of a young Brando sitting on his Triumph motorcycle, dressed in a black leather jacket, tilted cap and a stolen trophy attached at the headlamp, is certainly one that literally everyone has seen at least once. Some of you still live that image today! This film arguably started the biker exploitation explosion in this reviewer’s eyes, and set the tone for hundreds of “B” movie skirt riders that are still being spawned as we speak. Released in 1953, The Wild One was based on a short story The Cyclists’ Raid by Frank Rooney which was published in Harper’s magazine in 1951. Rooney’s story was inspired by the Life magazine expose dubbed “The Hollister riot” published in July 21, 1947, after the famed ‘motorcycle weekend’ on July 4th. Curiously, that event is still celebrated in Hollister to this day! Further research will show that this piece was not as well accepted as some of Marlon Brando’s other work, such as Streetcar Named Desire and the film was actually banned in the UK for 14 years! What is Johnny rebelling against? “What have you got?” The story starts out when Brando, starring as Johnny Strabler, and his gang the Black Rebels Motorcycle Club roll into a small Midwestern town and interrupt a motorcycle race
being held there. A member of the BRMC steals a trophy, and presents it to Johnny who is the president of the gang in a show of respect. This trophy will become a focal point in the rest of the film, as it was not ‘won’ in actual competition, but ‘won’ by the ‘club’ as a spoil of confrontation. Johnny never actually states that he won the trophy until the gang heads to a local café, where Johnny meets Kathie Bleeker (played by Mary Murphy) who is the daughter of the local constable. Johnny tries to impress Kathie by stating that he won the trophy in the race, and asks her out to a dance being held later in the evening. Kathie refuses, and as the gang causes more and more disturbance, the locals in the town prod Harry Bleeker (the local cop played by Robert Keith) to deal with the gang. At this point in the film it becomes clear that Kathie is actually attracted to Johnny, and his wild lifestyle, but the romance never seems to work out.… As Johnny and his gang leave the Café, they encounter Chino (played by Lee Marvin) and his gang. Johnny and Chino are old enemies, and it is inferred that they were both members of another – larger- gang. Their rivalry escalated when Johnny broke off and formed the BRMC. Chino tries to recover the stolen trophy, but is unable to do so. As in all films of this nature, a fight breaks out between Johnny and Chino - Johnny wins. During the melee, a citizen hits a motorcycle with his car, and Chino drags him out of the car to beat him up. It is at this point that Harry the Cop arrests Chino. Harry was going to arrest the citizen also, but he lets him go in fear of future retribution. With Chino in jail, Johnny returns to the café to once again ask Kathie out. She again refuses using the ‘trophy’ and the alleged theft as an excuse. … (I guess she didn’t want to be a “Trophy” wife!) Later that night, Chino’s gang abducts the citizen from his home and in a hilarious scene they attempt to put him in jail with Chino. They actually get him into a cot in the cell, but Chino is too drunk to get up, so they just leave him there. He later breaks out! How you ask? The locals form up a vigilante squad to run the bikers out of town. When they go to the jail to retrieve their neighbor, Chino escapes and disappears into the darkness. Later Chino and his gang attempt to abduct Kathie, but our hero Johnny saves the day! Kathie and Johnny soon part but the vigilantes capture Johnny and give him a good beating. He escapes, and returns to his motorcycle and as the vigilantes give chase, one of them throws a tire iron at the speeding bike. The tire iron knocks Johnny from his bike, but the rider-less machine careens into an elderly bystander, killing him.… Johnny is arrested and charged with manslaughter, but after Kathie and another witness corroborate his story he is released from jail. In the end, even though it is apparent that Johnny doesn’t want to thank his witnesses for speaking up for him, he returns to the Café to offer the trophy to Kathie. This film is a classic piece that you will likely enjoy if you are fan of biker exploitation films. I stated earlier that this is the one that started it all, and if you like this kind of action this is a must see! The film runs 79 minutes; it is presented in beautiful black and white, and available on DVD! I’ll give this one 5 stars, and you will play it over and over again, I promise…

Spyke & Mike “Ah, the Good Old Days” Damn it’s hot out there my BTR friends! I hope you’re staying cool like Mike and I. He sure is taking way too long getting the Fat Bird up and running. But that’s OK! I’ve enjoyed hanging at the waters’ edge with my new found beach playmates. If there isn’t some kid wanting to take me out on his boogie board there are others trying to get me to play in the sand with them. Just last Sunday, I met this little kid named Bernie Jr. I let him push me around in his John Deere truck. He and his friends all got a kick out of it, and I was able to get some sun on my chicken legs and belly. Mike took a liking to his daddy, Bernie Sr. They both had Harley-Davidson towels and biker tans, so they hit it off well by passing many hours reliving stories of rides to Sturgis, Daytona, and Myrtle Beach while curling 12 oz. aluminum cans. Bernie Jr. rolled me back to where those two were relaxing under an umbrella, and I could hear Mike babbling on. Looking over at Bernie Jr., he spouts out, “Remember the good ol’e days when we were his age? It was a different world back then. Our mothers smoked and drank when they were pregnant and we came out OK. I recall getting put to sleep on my tummy in a baby crib with pull down sides and brightly colored lead based paint, and there is nothing wrong with me today.” I squawk, “Really Mike? Have you looked in the mirror and listened to yourself talk lately?” Bernie Sr. chimes in, “Yeah man, way back then we rode in cars with no booster seats or seat belts. I have memories of my daddy’s car always making weird noises, almost breaking down, having bald tires, and sometimes no brakes. We rolled around in the back seat like it was romper room and never got hurt in that old jalopy.” Mike
smiles and reminisces, “Well, my dad had a pickup truck and riding in the bed bouncing down dirt roads was our treat! When we got home, we drank from a garden hose or shared a bottle of soda pop. We all thought that tasted great and no one ever got sick or worried about getting germs.” Bernie Sr. smiles and says, “Look at my kid now, spoiled rotten. He’s got a PlayStation, Xbox, hundreds of video games, and ten TV channels playing cartoons 24 hours a day. His mommy even got him a phone and a computer to find friends on the Internet. He’s always in chat rooms or texting, and Facebook is the first thing he looks at after getting out of bed every day. When I was his age, I left the house early in the morning and went into the woods or to the next neighborhood and found my friends. We played all day long without seeing one adult. Ate worms and mud pies made from dirt and creek water; never once, did we get sick or worry about parasites living in our bellies. As long as we were back before the street lights were on, all was good!” Mike sits up and interjects, “Yeah dude, and if I was late I didn’t get dinner, but I got a spanking instead. Dad used a wooden spoon, a switch, or his belt; whatever he grabbed first is what he used. Man did that hurt! And I recall crying all night, but it never crossed my mind to call child
protective services and report him. For my 10th birthday I got a BB gun. For my 12th birthday I got a shotgun. When I was 14, I was driving mommy and daddy back from the bar because they could barely walk out the door. Not once in all those years did they worry about me putting an eye out, getting pulled over, or wrecking the car.” Bernie Sr. holds up a cold one and says, “Yeah man! Cheers to the golden days. We had freedom, success, failures, and responsibilities. We took chances; sometimes we came out on top, and sometimes we bit the bullet. We learned how to deal with life, and it made us who we are today!” I can’t take the reminiscing no more and break in, “All right you two, stop showing your age. Please get Bernie Jr. and me something to drink; we’re a little parched.” Bernie Jr. holds out his hand and says, “Daddy, daddy, I got a couple of questions for you. What happens when the Gulf of Mexico gets to the Atlantic Ocean?” His father answers, “Nothing son, they just wave.” The little tyke then asks, “OK, why are there fish on the bottom of the sea?” Bernie Sr. hands him an iced tea and remarks loudly, “Come on son, you should know this one. They all dropped out of school, just like I did!” Mike chokes on his beer and I roll my eyes squawking, “Well dude, here is another example of someone and his prodigy who shouldn’t be swimming in the gene pool. You really need to devote more time into getting the Fat Bird up and running. Now, I’m in need of some real wind therapy by you getting my wings in the wind and its wheels down the road ASAP.” Mike hails, “Amen Spyke, Amen!”

A few weekends ago we were in a group of 12 friends to get in the wind and enjoy the day together. The group took this last ride with our departing pastor, as a way of saying goodbye because he had been called to a church in North Carolina. We hit a great breakfast restaurant, and had a lot of fun joking and reminiscing, and ate all kinds of good foods. After we were all stuffed, we took off on a ride to nowhere (isn’t that the best kind?). Our leader picked some

nice back roads through some great farmland and horse farms, the weather was ideal, and the ride just about perfect. At one point we stopped for some bottles of cold water and spent more time remembering the past while also talking about the future. Our leader asked for input as to where to go next but got no suggestions, and about 45 minutes later we pulled into an ice cream shop (who would guess) that overlooks Kings Bay. It was absolutely beautiful, and the ice cream was great. Even better was the time of fellowship, as we all recognized that our last day together was coming to an end. It had been a great day to ride and share together, but 2 of our 12 would soon be leaving us behind. Looking back on our day together, I was reminded of the words of Jesus in John 15:22, “This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.” I realized that this group of 12 people was linked together by our love for one another, a love that is not demanding or selfish but really caused us to deeply care about one another as brothers and
sisters in Christ. Yes, two of us were leaving the group, but that won’t change how we feel about one another, and North Carolina is just a nice ride north from here! As I thought about the love this group has for each other, I realize our lives reflect a far greater example—Jesus Christ. His love was, and is, absolute, unconditional, and without end. Indeed, in the end He gave His very life for us, the ultimate sacrifice of love. He was willing, and gave His life as a sin payment for His brothers. Not only that, He gave His life for every man, woman, and child who will ever live so they might have life and have it more abundantly. That being said, there is one prerequisite to receiving that love from Jesus; yet it is so simple even a child can understand it. One must believe that Jesus died to pay for our sins and was resurrected by God, and we must ask Him to be the Lord of our lives. Now that is love, pure and perfect love! Best of all, He loves you, and wants to be your Lord. Call on Him, He’s waiting for you! In the Wind, Denny Dingler
