with some amazing items that are unique and useful to any biker – and non-biker alike! (Note: Tickets can be purchased on-line by visiting thunderbythebay.org and clicking on the Events tab on the home page) New this year is the Friday night “Hogs on Hillview” Block Party, which is free and open to the public. This will be held on Hillview Street in Sarasota. In addition, there will be the crowd favorite, “Light up the Night” People’s Choice Bike Show. This is where bikers bring and display their two or threewheeled iron steeds that are customized with various neon lights. Saturday is the popular Finz Finds “Cruise for Cash” Charity Ride. Registration is at 10 a.m. at the Sarasota Ford Dealership. The cost is $20 per person. There is $4,000 in cash prizes, giveaways at both Manatee River Harley-Davidson and Rossiter’s Harley-

Thunder By The Bay – 18 years and Growing! Thunder By The Bay is one of the most anticipated events on the west coast of beautiful Sarasota, Florida! Hundreds of thousands of people flock to Sarasota to participate in this fun-filled event. Executive Director of the Suncoast Charities for Children, Lucy Nicandri, has been the one pulling this event together year after year after year! I had the pleasure of getting the “inside scoop” for the 2016 Thunder By The Bay event from Lucy. “We always want to make sure there is something new and different every year at Thunder By The Bay. This year, we moved some things around to make other events more accommodating for folks wanting to experience more of this event.” Starting on Thursday, January 7, there

is the popular Sporting Clay Tournament – “Break Clays for a Great Cause!” This event will be held at Knight’s Trail Range in Sarasota. Registration starts at 8:30 a.m., with competition commencing at 9:00 a.m. “Participants can expect a nice lunch to follow the tournament, a Long Bird contest, a chance to win some great raffle prizes and to compete for some very special trophies. What was great to see last year was the number of women who participated in this event!” Thursday evening is the popular “Born To Be Wild” Kickoff Party. This event will be held at the Sarasota Ford Dealership. There will be various whiskey, wine, vodka, and beer tastings and food by Louie’s Modern. This starts at 6:30 p.m. until 11:00 p.m. Tickets are at $100/per person and go very quickly! In addition, there is the popular silent auction

Davidson ride stops, and a free continental breakfast for all registered riders. “This ride is a favorite for the five non-profit agencies Suncoast Charities supports and the riders who participate. We will have clients of all ages from these various agencies greeting the riders to thank them for their support. Also new this year, if riders cannot participate in the “Cruise for Cash” we hope they will consider making a donation to the charity on-line at thunderbythebay.org. Main Street will be bustling both Saturday and Sunday with vendors and lots of music! While you’re strolling the streets looking at your next leather jacket or customized bike seat, you can listen to some great music! “This year, we decided to go with tribute bands. We are so fortunate to have bands such as the ZZ Top tribute band (Trezz Hombres), Bon Jovi tribute band (Keep

the Faith), and the AC/DC tribute band (Highway to Hell).” Main Street Vending opens at 11:00 a.m. until 11:00 p.m. on Saturday and 11:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Sunday. Lucy was pleased to share with me a phone call she received directly from HarleyDavidson Motor Company in Milwaukee. “I received a call from their corporate consumer event team leader. They heard about our event due to the long-standing support from Rossiter’s Harley-Davidson and Manatee River Harley-Davidson and the fact that a charity is involved producing the Festival. Thunder By The Bay continues to ‘Honor Our Veterans, Active Duty Military, and Their Families,’ and the great news this year is that Harley-Davidson will be bringing in two 53’ tractor trailers full of demo and display bikes at the downtown Festival

in front of the Selby Public Library (near Five Points Park). In addition, they will be offering specials for our Military and Active Duty Vets! They will also have a smaller truck display at the Hogs on Hillview event.” Sunday, Thunder By The Bay continues with vendors on Main Street and live music by the Lynyrd Skynyrd Tribute Band (Nuthin Fancy), Lazy Bonez, and the Bobby Friss Band. In addition, the popular, expanded 17-class bike show will take place. From vintage, classic, and metric classes to the new Metric Mini this year, there is a class for just about anyone! Registration starts at 11:00 a.m. at $20 per bike entry fee. This will be set up on South Palm Avenue in downtown Sarasota. Thanks to the net proceeds raised during this annual event, Suncoast Charities for Children provides grants to the Suncoast

Foundation who, over the years, has constructed buildings valued at over $20 million. These buildings are occupied by the five agencies: Children First, The Florida Center, Community Haven, Special Olympics, and Loveland Center. Funding also provides necessary repairs and maintenance to the various campus locations. During the Finz Finds ride on Saturday, participants will have a chance to meet clients with special needs and their families that Suncoast Charities supports. They welcome your questions and look forward to meeting you! In addition to all the activities that are taking place during Thunder By The Bay, this event has become a destination event for motorcycle enthusiasts, both nationally and internationally. What began as a one day ride for charity, has now grown into a 4-day event generating an economic impact of $8 million to the local economy and over 6,000 room nights. Last year, approximately 90,000 people attended with 57.2% being BTR 14 | BORNTORIDE.COM

visitors from outside the area! This event has elicited a great reputation over the years and it just keeps getting better and better! Born To Ride and Lucy Nicandri have had a long-standing relationship with one another for 18 years! “Born To Ride continually hits the targeted demographics for this festival and thanks to their support each year gets bigger and bigger. With their experience in marketing, television, print/ digital/social media, coupled with 25 years in the business, it is a win-win situation for everyone! Recently, we were given a marketing grant from Visit Sarasota County. In order to have received this grant, the charity was required to secure marketing/ media placement surrounding the Festival that had a reach outside the Sarasota and Manatee county area and promote tourism into Sarasota. Born To Ride does that and so much more!” Winding down our amazing interview, Lucy was passionate when talking about her

volunteers and sponsors. “Every year I am blessed with the most talented volunteers and gracious sponsors. I also have a dedicated board of directors who provide us with their remarkable leadership and on-going support. There is no possible way this event could be as successful if it weren’t for our volunteers, sponsors, and board members. I also want to recognize my office assistant, Jackie, who helps keep me organized and does an outstanding job.” All of us at Born To Ride look forward to seeing YOU at Thunder By The Bay! Stop by our booth and say hello! Let us know you read about this event in Born To Ride Magazine! As doors closed on the 2015 American International Motorcycle Expo applause filled the Orange County Convention Center

AIMExpo Championship of the Americas The inaugural AIMExpo Championship of the America’s featured a slew of radically designed, hand built bikes by North America’s top custom builders. These bikes and builders were met with a standing ovation during the award ceremony that crowned builders in four unique classes and culminated in the choosing of a Free Style champion to represent AIMExpo at the AMD World Championship of Custom Bike Building in Cologne, Germany. Among the winners was Bill Dodge from Bling Cycles who won the Retro Custom Class, Jim “Preacher” Goodrich from Preachers Hot Rod Cycles won the Performance Custom Class and Dell Battle from Dangerous Dezigns won the Street Custom Class. The Free Style winner who was selected by his peers and AIMExpo judges alike was Jeremy Cupp from LC Fabrications. A masterpiece of craftsmanship, Jeremy built a flawless chassis from raw metal to house a motor BTR 22 | BORNTORIDE.COM

constructed with a Ducati head mated to a Buell bottom end. Congratulations to Jeremy and good luck in Cologne! AMA Hall of Fame Returning as a featured event at AIMExpo, the AMA hosted its 2015 Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony inside the convention center on Saturday night. Kicking off the night was a VIP reception leading into the awards ceremony. Emotional acceptance speeches highlighted the night, and the evening came to a close with a particularly heartfelt speech from Legend Award Winner Wayne Rainey. The class of 2015 included Alex Jorgensen, John Kocinski, Keith McCarty, John Parham, Rodney Smith and Richard Teerlink. Yelvington Trikes Making strides in trike suspension, Yelvington Designs introduced its hybrid independent suspension over the weekend. The internally articulated independent suspension is a patent-pending option that

can be added to any of Yelvington’s trike conversion kits. No matter the conditions, this suspension has been designed to give riders a great ride. Adding to its already interesting suspension design, Yelvington also boasts a patented reverse system that can be added to its kits, helping riders to never be stuck between a rock and a hard place again. Whistler Group With safety being a big topic of conversation with many consumers, Whistler Group’s newest product is an easy solution to being more visible. The MotoGlo Motorcycle Safety Light integrates a motorcycle’s brake and turn signal system with the riders helmet. When a rider utilizes either their brake or turn signals, the lights mounted on the back of the helmet sync with the lights on the bike, adding extra visibility. RK Concepts One of the most attention-grabbing elements on the show floor was

the line-up of bikes built by RK Concepts’ Rafik Kaissi. The “RK Bearing” build stopped attendees in their tracks as they marveled at the engineering and attention to detail behind the one-off design. Booth Winners For the second year, AIMExpo handed out booth awards to exhibitors that went above and beyond with the design of their respective booth area. Four different awards were given – a rookie award for a large and small booth and a veteran award for a large and small booth – with exhibitors being scored on booth design, branding, creative design, interactive experience, social media, staffing and overall appearance. This year’s rookie winner for a booth under 400 sq. ft. was Standard Motorcycle Co., while the rookie winner for a booth 400 sq. ft. or larger was Bates Footwear. In the returning exhibitor class, the booth under 400 sq. ft. winner went to Forma Boots, and the 400 sq. ft. or larger booth taking the top honors was BMW Motorcycle Owners of America.

Women’s World Kicking the Holidays with Life, Love & Passion

The holidays have arrived! Time to shop, attend parties, wrap gifts and eat, eat, eat! The malls go mad with people shopping— spending money they have and money they don’t have. Consumers are buying gifts of all kinds, some to impress and some just to give— even if they end up in the garbage or passed on to someone else. This describes the commercialized holiday season, which has sadly overtaken the true spirit of giving for many people. There is a better way to see and experience the holidays! A year ago I wasn’t sure I’d live to see this holiday season. Having been diagnosed with cancer of the lungs, which then metastasized to the brain, gave me doubts about being here. By the Grace of God I made it! I’m rocking this world and taking all who want to join me. I’m healthy, feeling amazing, and living life like others only dream of. I want to be everyone’s “Wake-Up Call” to live a blissful life. Don’t waste life on materialism, superficiality, or plain fakeness. Over the past year, I stepped so far out of my comfort zone that I have even shocked myself. I rode my own Harley-Davidson Heritage Classic for thousands of miles. I visited places that I didn’t even know existed. In addition, I challenged roads that are simply amazing to ride. I got to ride the “Tail of the Dragon” along with friends, in addition to riding many of the scenic roads through the Smokey Mountains. I rode the “Seven Mile Bridge” into Key West. I

became a regular on A1A along the Atlantic Ocean, discovering great eating venues along the Florida east coast. I made new friends and cherished the old ones. My proverbial bucket list was my goal, just in case my health interrupted things. I learned and continue to learn. Holidays have turned around for me. I have turned them into such a deep loving season. I am no longer concerned with making sure I shop for everyone. Worried I forget someone and they get upset with me, always looking for the best gifts to impress. Instead of falling into that media commercialized trap, turn it around and focus on giving meaning to the holidays by enjoying simple times together with the people you love. I discovered the importance of spending more time talking, playing, cooking and creating homemade “gifts of love” for each other. For those who are single and without family nearby, don’t dread the holidays! Remember family is not just blood relatives. Some friends are more like family than real family. Also, don’t forget all the good you can do by helping those in need, those who are lonely: either they’ve lost a loved one, are elderly, sick, etc. … Volunteer to help the soup kitchen, visit a nursing home, ask your church if there is someone who needs help that you can assist, you can even foster a pet in need (yes I am an animal advocate). Pets are an amazing gift that can brighten everyone’s heart.

The holidays should be filled with love and compassion not trinkets; trinkets do not matter in the end. Accumulate loving memories you can cherish. Accumulate the number of times you brought joy to someone in need. Make peace with those you have distanced yourself from. One major rule I was raised with is that you never stop talking to your family. We can be angry and not agree, but we can never stop speaking to each other. For some, maybe this is the time for reconciliation while you are alive to do it! Of course to my entire fellow motorcycle enthusiast don’t forget to try a “TOY RUN.” Enjoy the ride and company of many other bikers while doing a wonderful deed. Bring smiles to as many people as you can. We at EQ Women Succeed, LLC and Born To Ride wish you a wonderful and blessed holiday season. I invite you to come check out our upcoming events (Born To Ride Women’s World: An EQ LifeStyle) at www.EQWS.org and/or www. borntoride.com. Join our mailing list so you don’t miss out. I’m looking forward to meeting you and making this journey called life tremble with love, joy, purpose and passion! Do you know what it feels like when you talk to someone for the first time and you feel like you’ve known that person for years? Well, that’s what I felt after talking with Michelle Osborne. She is an amazing woman who can help ANYONE with their financial future—and she is a biker as well! Hailing from North Carolina, Michelle started at Merrill Lynch when she was 19 years old. “I was told that I was ‘Too cute, too young, and too blonde. You’re not going to make it in this industry.’ Well, that wasn’t going to work with me. So, I took that ‘compliment’ and used it to my advantage.” Michelle asked to watch them during trades. “I did this for two years. Then I worked in a trust department in a bank in Asheville. My mom died when I was 12. Then when

my dad died 7 years later, I learned about estate planning. A finance attorney from our church said that he would teach me about probate and estate planning.” At the age of 19, Michelle learned about wills, probate, and power of attorney. “It’s all about helping people. It’s really educational. It’s taking the proverbial ‘shirt and tie off’ and being real with people. Recently, I had a woman come to my office that I met at a biker event in Orlando. She told me that she had lost $60,000 the last few months on her investments and didn’t know why. I told her that she needed to know where her money was going. She told me that she had a financial advisor that ‘took care of all of that.’ Well, he certainly took care of it; he was charging her fees upon fees and had her money in areas that weren’t going to help her when it came time for her to retire. I took the time to teach her what she needed to know about her investments and retirement. Knowledge is power! I quizzed her on what I taught her. She understood completely what was going on and working together, we are back on track with her retirement investments.” Michelle has a wonderful career and has met and worked with some of the biggest firms in the country. “During my career, I’ve been the top advisor of four financial firms in the country. It’s important to recognize and respect that people who come to you for financial help want you to take care of them. You have to like me and I have to like you. If I don’t feel right about people, I turn them away. If they were going to do something dishonest or wanted me to do something

dishonest, that’s not going to work. I have to trust my gut—and my women’s intuition!” “I took over bank programs in Canton, North Carolina. I was a real go getter and was also on the Chamber of Commerce in Asheville. Canton Savings and Loan gave me my big start. At the time, I could only work with $1,000 and $2,000 accounts. They didn’t trust me with anything larger. Canton is a small town where my great grandfather worked in the paper mill. I had tons of relatives that lived there. Most didn’t know what an annuity was or an investment was. So, I started teaching everyone what they needed to know so they would be able to properly invest in their retirements. These people made out like bandits with a 30% return on their principal!” Michelle eventually moved to beautiful Florida, bringing her successful career with her to the Sunshine State. “I moved down her with my ‘then boyfriend.’ I took a year off from work to get settled and to really contemplate what I wanted to do with my life. I decided to start up my own company here in Tampa. It’s one of the best moves I’ve made in my life and in my career!” In addition to her successes in personal financial planning, investment strategies, creating income, estate planning, and asset protection, Michelle is very active in the local biker communities! “I have two motorcycles; a Harley and a Kawasaki. I attend many bike nights in town and am very involved in helping non-profit organizations with their various fundraising programs. You can come visit me at the Wednesday night bike night at Quaker Steak and Lube in Clearwater.” All of us at Born To Ride are very excited about Michelle being a part of our family! If you have ANY questions about finances, big or small, give Michelle a call today 727-4594875. Be sure to let her know you read about her in Born To Ride Women’s World! FLORIDA SHERIFFS YOUTH RANCHES PREPARE FOR CHRISTMAS

As the holidays approach, Youth Ranches staff members are busy coordinating activities with our donors and supporters from around the state. Christmas is a much anticipated time on our campuses. The Ranchers enjoy decorating their cottages with Christmas trees and signs of the season. In years past, most boys and girls traveled home for the holidays, although some did not. This year, with the addition of our sibling cottages, half of our Ranchers will wake up in their cottage home on Christmas morning. Fortunately, our donors and supporters really know how to make the Ranchers smile. Plans are being finalized for some exciting days and nights ahead at the Boys Ranch in Live Oak, the Youth Villa in Bartow, the Youth Ranch Bradenton-Sarasota and the Youth Ranch Safety Harbor. The Ranchers on the Boys Ranch will be decorating the campus with their cottage boards wishing visitors a “Merry Christmas!” Some of the expected visitors will be the

Florida Moose Riders and the Tallahassee Independent Order of Odd Fellows. The Moose Riders request a wish list each year and visit the cottages to deliver their goodies while the Tallahassee Oddfellows deliver a brand new pair of blue jeans for each of the boys. The Youth Villa in Bartow will enjoy a visit from Santa and several members of the Loyal Order of Moose from Palm Beach. Polk County Youth for Christ will pay a visit to decorate cookies. The girls will also be taking a field trip to a local farm to enjoy a holiday movie, bonfire, dinner and visit from Santa Claus sponsored by Armor Correctional Health Services. The Hillsborough County Lady Deputies will be visiting with the girls to make breakfast, bake cookies and decorate ornaments. One of the most anticipated moments will be Santa paying a visit via helicopter thanks to Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd. Members of the Florida Blue Knights International Motorcycle Club, made up of current and retired law enforcement officers,

will be stopping by the Bradenton-Sarasota campus to deliver presents and have lunch with the Ranchers. The boys and girls will be decorating their cottages and the community center. The Ranchers on the Safety Harbor campus will be receiving a visit from Ye Mystic Krewe of Santa Margarita’s Pirate Santa and his elves aboard their Gasparilla pirate ship parade float. The Ranchers will also enjoy a Christmas PJ Party and the Sons of the American Legion will be on campus to bake cookies on Christmas Eve, cook breakfast on Christmas morning and welcome Santa with a bag full of presents. Despite the many reasons these boys and girls find themselves entrusted to our programs, this holiday season looks to be an exciting one on the campuses of the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches. If you would like more information on how to help support the boys and girls in our care, please contact Wayne Witczak, Donor Development Director at 1-800-765-3797 or visit us at www. youthranches.org BORNTORIDE.COM | BTR 53

aturday was a cool, damp, foggy morning throughout the State of Florida. Numerous people from various clubs, associations, groups, as well as unaffiliated riders made their way to rendezvous points to meet up with tractor-trailer rigs. The cargo was the muchcherished Christmas Wreaths, which would be placed at the National Cemeteries throughout the State of Florida, as well as across the United States. This column is centered on two specific National Cemeteries in Florida, the largest being the Florida National (6502 S.W. 102nd Ave., Bushnell) and the state’s newest cemetery in Sarasota (9810 State Road 72 (Clark Rd.), Sarasota). The escort to Florida National had two starting points one being the parking lot of Saddle Creek Logistics Services located in Lakeland and the second from the Wal-Mart Distribution Center in Brooksville. Three Chapters of the US Military Veterans Motorcycle Club under the leadership of Jack ‘Breakdown’ Sellers (North Florida President for the USMVMC) worked at both Brooksville and Lakeland to ensure the escorts would be safe and

S

arrived on time. They helped with parking and all the other tasks that need to be accomplished in situations where there are so many motorcyclists involved. A total of 1,300 motorcycles took part in the two escorts, which included 300 from Brooksville and 1,000 from Lakeland. It is a known fact; a majority of motorcyclists are true red-blooded Americans who appreciate what freedoms we have and what the cost of those freedoms have been. A large number have served in the military or have a family member or friend who has, and that makes it personal. The Wreaths Across America Program is an annual event throughout the United States, and the wreath laying ceremony usually occurs on the second Saturday of December. The escort, which I was involved in, was from Ruskin to Sarasota National Cemetery. We had nowhere near the number of folks escorting our tractor-trailer. We only numbered 60 strong; however, the number didn’t make us any smaller. Most of us were veterans honoring those who served this country. The Florida Highway Patrol led our escort—with assistance from the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office.

www.wreathsacrossamerica.org represents one of the 111,000 graves at Bushnell Cemetery

What occurred at the laying of the wreaths is what was really important to us at each cemetery. Florida National Cemetery had 6,982 wreaths laid with approximately 9-10,000 people in attendance. Sarasota National Cemetery had approximately 2,000 people who helped to set 5,170 wreaths, one for every gravesite in the cemetery. I would like to thank two special people who made Sarasota National Cemetery look so wonderful for Christmas. The first being retired Army Colonel Bill Brockman, who recently retired from the Sarasota Military Academy and has been the main driving force behind this project at Sarasota since the cemetery opened. Secondly, ‘Maverick’ Johnson who is one of the morning DJs on 106.5 CTQ Country Radio station in Sarasota. Both of these men made the laying of the wreaths as well as the ceremony a success. To every story, there is always a sometimes hidden back-story. In the case of Wreaths Across America, it is the story of why Morrill Worcester started the non-profit organization. It’s called appropriately and simple enough the ‘Arlington Story.’ In 1992, a man by the name of Morrill Worcester was remembering what he had seen as a child and personally felt those who have served this country and have passed away should have a Christmas Wreath placed on their headstone. The mission statement at ‘Wreaths Across America’ is “Remember, Honor, and Teach.” The back-story regarding Morrill Worcester is somewhat short and to the point. He won a trip from Bangor Maine to Washington, DC when he was working as a paperboy at age 12. One of the places he visited was Arlington National Cemetery. It was a sight which stays with him to this day, thus began the tradition. Corporate sponsor, truck drivers, volunteers, clubs and motorcyclists are what make this yearly project work. One of the major sponsors is Wal-Mart, especially their headquarters in Bentonville, AR, who supplies twelve tractor-trailers to transport wreaths going to Arlington as well as here locally. They also donated $168,000 this year towards wreaths at Arlington. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the semi driver who brought the wreaths straight from Maine to the Sarasota Cemetery. His name is Mike Dengel of the Ocala area. He is an independent owner/operator who has been in the military, as have most of his family members. He and his wife Barbara decided that instead of transferring the load to a Wal-Mart semi in Brooksville they would bring them to Sarasota. Keep in mind the corporations and owner/operators are not reimbursed for any expenses while carrying the wreaths. I would like to personally thank everyone for their time in making this happen during the Christmas season. It means a lot to a whole lot of veteran’s families and friends. I also want to thank all the law enforcement agencies who assisted in making this a safe venture for all of us. Should you want to know more regarding the Wreaths Across America Project please go to the following websites:

Biker Movie Review

This month Born To Ride reviews the MiniSkirt Mob, another in a series of horrible old biker films for your entertainment. In some cases “the older the more horrible” comes to mind when dealing with these movies. This one was produced in 1968, and rates right (down) there with the best of the worst! The plot bears more than a few similarities to Satan’s Sadists (which I have previously reviewed for BTR). In this case, it’s Shayne, the psychotic female leader of The “Mini Skirts” played by Diane McBain and her hair-do, stalking the innocent young couple along with her ‘gang’ members. It seems that “Jeff” theman she’s after used to be “her

guy,” but he got wise, dumped his rodeo/ biker buddies and married some hot brunette girl from the local bank. This in my opinion was a weird mix. The connection involving ‘biker’ girls and rodeo guys never seemed to materialize. It looked more like a ‘hippie’ flick than a poorly made biker film. Anyway, here’s my best shot at explaining the plot. … Just as Jeff was preparing to apply the pork to his new bride “Connie,” all his old pals and the “Mini-Skirts” arrive at his camper trailer to party. This of course leads to a major fistfight, where Jeff and his new bride suffer the worst of the melee. Later Shayne the maniacal jilted blonde (and her hair-do)

Do you have a favorite Biker Movie we don’t have? Let us know: info@borntoride.com

convinces the other ne’er-do-wells to hang around with her, and continue to torture Jeff and Connie. As they chase them up a mountain road Jeff swerves and runs “LG” off the road crashing his motorcycle into a deep chasm. They return to find him dead, and decide to leave, but some boy scouts see all the action. The cops come later, and haul LG off. (You don’t see too much of the cops in this one oddly. ...) Later on, the gang finds Jeff and Connie camped out, and a couple of the guys rough Connie up while Jeff is out walking around. More psycho-babble from Shayne leads the gang to keep the couple trapped in the trailer with a rifle. That only works for a while, as Jeff tries to rig something up with the propane bottle, and the stove in the camper. As usual in these films one of the members turns on the other. In this case it’s Shayne’s sister, who wants to release Jeff and his bride and return to town. She knocks one of the rodeo rednecks out, and hatches a plan with Jeff and Connie. As she dons Connie’s clothes, the couple escapes while she fires at the gang from inside the trailer. The gang retaliates with Molotov cocktails, leading to one of the ubiquitous gags where a stunt man wears a fire suit and runs around the desert while flaming away. Anyhow, I’m not sure where the beer (or the empty bottles) originally came from, but the blast from the exploding propane kills Shayne’s sister. In the end two of the gang chase Jeff and Connie through the desert, and Shayne’s motorcycle slips on the edge of a ravine and crashes down several hundred feet. Shayne is holding on to the edge for dear life and begs Connie to save her. Connie grasps Shayne’s hand but well you know … she kinda lets go as Jeff approaches, and the couple watches as Shayne tumbles to her death. As typical in these old reels, most of the actors were totally unconvincing. I found myself thinking- these aren’t real bikers or rodeo dudes! These are simply bourgeois B-movie Hollywood types earning a living at ruining their future careers. I think that during most of the viewings however. Biker exploitation? No. Waste of good Mylar? Probably. You watch it and decide for yourself. I can only recommend this piece if you have a burning desire to see hot Sixties chicks in mini-skirts, go-go boots and huge hair. I did like the old Honda and Triumph motorcycles, and of course since there was Budweiser, (still not sure where it came from) it got one star. It runs 82 minutes, is available on DVD from MGM’s ‘Midnight Movies’ series, and I can only (in my right mind) give it 2 stars because there was a glaring lack of nudity. (The second star appears because I LOVE cat-fights!) So grab a Bud and some popcorn, and we’ll see ya next month! The Phantom BORNTORIDE.COM | BTR 67

Craven Moorehead Remember when Christmas was safe and motorcycles were dangerous!

This is a headline that I used for an article several years ago. Although the time has passed and some things have changed, the overall message has remained exactly the same. The corruption and insanity that surrounds the holiday season has only been exacerbated by our current state of affairs which have become increasingly more and more unconscionable. The corporate greed hasn’t changed at all, but the stakes are now higher and with the situations that affect us in the global community, little or no hope remains to make this – our favorite time of the year a happy moment without egregious difficulty. Every task must be completed, and if you are like me, then you likely do not have the financial wherewithal to see the mission through to completion. This however, has never stopped any of us from attempting to do it at any cost. The beat goes on. With the recent terrorist attacks on our allies, we have been warned to limit our travel and to be cautious when attending certain events. Terrorism does not take a nap especially when the season of giving is upon us. We all seem to act in an unconventional manner between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Not that we are crazed Muslim extremists or anything like that, but meeting the needs and desires of our family and friends at this time of year seems to tilt the scales of insanity toward the ‘wild side.’ Does terror begin at home, abroad, the internet or is it simply ‘Black Friday’ – the question often asked. We must look within for the answer, but it rarely comes. I decided I would risk the inevitable and head out to do a little shopping and perhaps visit the nearby Gentlemen’s club. I fired up the bagger and packed an extra clip just in case I ran into some sort of revolution in my travels. It’s a nice ride from

home to the city, so I tried to enjoy the few moments of peace while I could. Even though I live out in the country, ‘town’ as it is called because it is not that far away. As I approached the outskirts I could see a multitude of brake lights and traffic was at a crawl. Vehicles were backed up for a half of a mile or so. It’s that damn shopping center, I thought to myself as I began passing cars on the right shoulder. The shoppers all agog with their commercialistic desires would occasionally blow their horns and flip me off, but this sort of behavior is to be expected at such a critical time. People lose their minds when they have the opportunity to ‘save’ a lot of money while being duped by crafty retailers! Because I was passing so many vehicles on the shoulder, I was sort of forced to turn into the mall parking lot or face the possibility of damaging my paint job while being run over by some anxious shopper. Once inside the parking lot, I was able to maneuver past thousands of cars and trucks that were contending for that one last parking space. None of this seemed so horrible until I saw the immense police presence and the riots that were being quelled by rubber bullets and tear-gas at the entrances to some of the stores. Helicopters hovered above as people fell to the pavement with apparent epileptic fits induced by the thousands of flashing lights from the horde of emergency vehicles. Smoke filled the air and the sound of bullhorns and sirens created a deafening cacophony of aural discomfort. What began as a peaceful ride into town just turned into another adventure in stupidity and agony. With no hope of escaping the maze that once was a simple parking lot, I had to think fast. The square mile facility that was now a war zone offered little egress to sanity, but by utilizing the smaller footprint of the bagger, I was able to maneuver easily past the gridlock. A handicap ramp leading up to the crowded sidewalk in front of one of the stores was my route to escape. Although

Let us know what you think of Craven Moorehead, info@borntoride.com

this area was packed with camping shoppers their tents and portable chairs, I deduced that it would be easier to run over people and camping gear than it would be to pull an Evil Knievel and jump my thousand pound bagger over several hundred cars. As I entered the sidewalk, I twisted the wick up to about 45 hundred rpm and dumped the clutch. With a deafening roar from the pipes, the front tire lifted skyward and I rode the rear tire for about 400 feet, clearing a path through the shoppers, their camping gear, and general trash and debris. As I shifted into second the front tire returned to the earth, and I ducked behind the fairing as various items flew from the sides of the bike, reminiscent of a cow-catcher on an antique freight train. I spotted a safe haven a few thousand feet up the sidewalk. It was simply another craft brew franchise with bright neon lights and a place to park on the sidewalk. All I would have to do is make it there before the cops directed their attention toward me, instead of the already raging insurgence. Luckily for me some of the stores in this area were already open, and most of the shoppers were inside collecting their spoils. I leaned to the left and simultaneously slammed on the rear brake and the bagger came to rest facing away from the front entrance of the bar. I shut down the motor and wandered inside. Although this wasn’t my original destination, the beer was cold and the girls who worked there were pleasing to the eye. The scant few patrons in this establishment were enjoying drinks and watching the large televisions scattered throughout the bar. Curiously enough, football had been preempted by the local news coverage of the riot in this very same mall. No one seemed to mind though, and I got the feeling that most of the people understood good ole St. Nick’s ploy to make everyone crazy before his big day. I wish you all have a good Christmas, but if you want to have a drama free holiday then I recommend that you attend ‘Cyber Monday’ instead of the alternative! Till next time, speed safely! Pride Cycles and Power Sports will be relocating in January 2016 Anthony is going back to Lithia and back to his roots! This move will allow me to get back in touch with why I started Pride Cycles and Power Sports 7 years ago, and why I have been a part of the motorcycles service industry for nearly 20 years now. It’s about providing and maintaining the highest level of quality service and the attention to detail that our clients have come to know. It’s about retaining a reputation of knowledge and honesty. These high standards I keep for my business and my name are what drives me to stay focused on what my role is in this industry. It’s knowing there is a place where you can take your pride and joy to get serviced and repaired properly without it being rushed or half stepped. It’s about having the actual business owner with 20 years’ experience performing the work on your machine with a one-on-one relationship. BTR 76 | BORNTORIDE.COM

That is what this new chapter is about for me. Being accessible/vulnerable to the general public and dealing with astronomical operating expenses have truly taken it’s toll on me over the last 7 years. They took all the fun out of this business and made it impossible for me to make a profit. So instead of just throwing in the towel and shutting down the business, I decided to go back to basics, scale everything down and cut out all the stress, so I can focus and cater to the type of client(s) who appreciate how we do things here at Pride Cycles and Power Sports. I can be reached by the same phone number I have had for the last 7 years now 813-6897889, or via e mail Anthony@Pridecycles.com as well as social media. I am operating by appointment ONLY. No walk-ins. Alison and I want to thank ALL of our Loyal clients for your appreciation and your patronage over the last 7 years. ~Ride With Pride~

Spyke & Mike

“Ho, Ho, Ho my BTR friends!” Mike and I wish you and your family a very joyous and safe holiday season. This year we came up with some parody jingles about each other and a biker tradition we hold near and dear to our hearts, toy runs. So, grab your favorite beverage and warm up that singing voice. Then curl up next to a fire, out on the patio, or wherever you hang out in your abode—and enjoy. The first one Mike wrote about how I get my writing material and the other two came from my bird brain through my talons and onto the keyboard.

To the tune of ‘Santa Claus is coming to town’: You better watch out You better not gab You better not shout And never backstab Spyke is always getting the story. She’s listening very closely She’s reading all your lips She’s keeping very good notes Right under her blue wing tips Spyke is always getting the story. She hears you at the bike nights Surveilles you when your outside And if she doesn’t get it quite right She’ll make you sound cockeyed So you shouldn’t assume That you’re safe and secure At any given event Keep your words clean and pure Spyke is always getting the story.

To the tune of ‘God rest ye Merry Gentlemen’: The restroom door said gentlemen So Mike just walked inside He took two steps and realized He’d been taken for a ride He heard high voices turned and found The place was occupied By two strippers, three biker chicks, and a nurse What could be worse? Than two strippers, three biker chicks,

and a nurse The restroom door said gentlemen It must have been a gag As soon as he walked in there he ran into some ole hags One sprayed him with a can of mace Another slammed him with her bag I could tell this just wouldn’t be Mike’s day What can I say? It just wasn’t turning out to be Mike’s day But the restroom door said gentlemen And he would like to find The crummy little jerks who had the nerve to switch the sign ‘Cause he’s got two black eyes And one high heel up his behind Now he can’t sit with comfort and joy Boy, oh, boy No he’ll never sit with comfort and joy.

To the tune of ‘Silver Bells’: Packed parking lot, festive biker clan All dressed in holiday style In the air There’s a feeling Of Christmas Bikers riding Crowds we’re passing Most of them waving back at us And from every passing scoot you’ll hear Biker horns, biker horns It’s toy run time in Florida Ring-a-ling, hear them ring As they ride side by side Lines of street bikes Running stop lights Cop cars blink red and blue As they hold up traffic While we ride by so slow Hear the parents scream See the kids bunch As bikers throw them candy And above all this bustle You’ll hear Biker horns, biker horns It’s toy run time in Florida Ring-a-ling, hear them ring As they ride side by side

Well, there you have it, my BTR friends. Something to sing when visiting your relatives, coworkers, and friends while enjoying the company of the three wise men: Jonny Walker, Jim Beam, and Jack Daniels. And here is a little stocking stuffer of information about Santa’s ride. While both male and female reindeer grow antlers in the summer each year, the male reindeer drop their antlers at the beginning of winter, usually in late November. Female reindeer retain their antlers until after they give birth in the spring. Therefore, according to all historical renditions depicting Santa’s’ reindeer, every single one of them, from Rudolph to Blitzen, had to be a girl. That just proves one point. Only women, while pregnant, would be able to drag a fat man dressed in a red velvet suit all the way around the world in one night and not get lost! It’s time for me and Mike to make like Santa Claus and leave your presents! We’ll see ya’ll soon at some toy run or upcoming event. Be safe and do like Mike does. He gets my wings in the wind and the Fat Bird’s wheels down the road. SPYKE

Have you been really enjoying your time in the wind lately? I don’t get out as much as I would like, but when I do it is beautiful weather and sunny skies! The other day I was doing ministry at an event and started to break a sweat. My tee shirt even got a salt ring around the edges! I had ridden over in leather that morning, but the sun had climbed and it got really warm. The point is that just about the time I was getting

BTR 80 | BORNTORIDE.COM

wet from the heat, it was time to mount up and ride. It didn’t take but about two blocks for the cooler air and the wind speed to start drying my shirt. It really felt good, totally worth a short time being warmer than I cared to be. Riding is a lot like that, a series of give and take events, good times mixed with not so good times. Coming home from Daytona recently, on a two-lane back road, there was a lot of traffic, and a higher sense of caution was necessary for safety. That disappointed me a little, but then I thought about how deserted that same road was on the way over that morning. One great example is a 70-mile ride I took years ago to see my girlfriend at her parent’s lake cottage. It was summer time in central Texas, and it was very hot. In that 70 miles I got soaked by rain 3 times (no rain gear), but I was totally dry when I arrived. I wasn’t thankful at all during the rain but very happy when I arrived freshly showered and dried! During the holiday season we have so many reasons to be thankful; good friends, great bikes, and the freedom to get in the wind

whenever we want. Time together with those that are important to us is special, and we should be thankful for each moment we can share with them. That’s why I like to remember the things to give thanks for when things may not be going my way, it reminds me how good things really are! In Ephesians 5:20, the Bible says, “giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” There will be times in each of our lives when things get tough, but there is a great peace when we can learn to be grateful for what we have going right in our lives and not focusing on the challenges. God has promised to never leave us or turn away from us. That gives us power to overcome the dark times of life as we look forward with thanksgiving towards the brighter days before us. When life gets you down, look up, and remember there is a God who loves you. Give Him thanks for all He does, and He’ll give you an abundance of reasons to be thankful! In The Wind, Denny Dingler
