THE SLEEPY COMMUTER

You’re riding your motorcycle to work just after sunrise, traveling down a typical suburban street lined with carfilled driveways. As you approach one of these driveways a car begins to move and backs out directly into your path. You brake hard and come to a stop just inches away from the car’s rear bumper. Strategy: Given the hour of day and the type of neighborhood, you could have expected to encounter at least a few drivers backing out of their driveways and heading off to work. Clues include drivers getting into their cars as you approach, or a tell-tale puff of exhaust warning you that the car has been started and is preparing to leave. Watch for brake lights and backup lights, too. If you observe any of the above warning signs, take the following precautions: Slow your pace and prepare to stop, if necessary. Keep your eyes up and cover the front brake lever and rear brake pedal. Stabilize your speed so that if the car does begin to move out into your path, you have sufficient space to stop. If there isn’t room or time to slow to a stop, scan for an escape route to swerve into. If there is no oncoming traffic, swerve to the left; if this route isn’t available, consider swerving to the right. For more information go to www.msf-usa.org

Sebring is a beautiful location to have any kind of event; be it a car race, boat races, or biker parties. Nestled in Highlands County, Sebring is known for having a circle in the middle of the town! Sebring is nicknamed, “The City on the Circle” in reference to Circle Drive, the center of the Sebring Downtown Historic District AND home to the 2016 Sebring Bike Fest! Lora Todd, a long-time friend of the Born To Ride Family, is one of the event coordinators for this event! I had the honor of speaking with her about the April 15-17 event and am excited to share it with you today! Lora: We started planning this event October of last year. I went to a redevelopment conference in Miami that focused on

redeveloping local communities. A few years ago, we had a motorcycle event. It hadn’t happened in a while and many people missed it. So, the Chamber of Commerce sent out a survey asking how the past biker event impacted local business. It really impacted local business here; I think 87% said that biker event impacted their business on a positive note. So we decided to start a new bike fest. Hence, the Sebring Partnership was born. We’ve had several events that have been very successful so far. Now adding to our events list is this bike fest! Susan: What kind of events will be taking place at the Sebring Bike Fest? Lora: Born To Ride has been very

Sebring Bike Fest, April 15-16, Sebring Circle, Vendors Call:863-381-6467

instrumental in helping us get the word out. We are having a Born To Ride Bike Show, Fran Haasch has been very instrumental in helping support this event by bringing in the Bobby Friss Band on Saturday night. In addition to Bobby Friss, we will be having other local bands for your listening and dancing pleasure. We are building on what other bike events have had including a fabulous poker run. We have a motorcycle drill team coming in, a stunt riders show, and some really good vendors are attending as well. Susan: We’ve got Bobby Friss, great vendors, and events. Are there any local charities that you want to mention that will benefit from this event?

Lora: We are bringing awareness to a few organizations in Sebring that are in desperate need; there is a Children’s Museum that needs an $80,000 roof renovation. We have the Champion for Children’s Foundation; a Children’s Theatre that is right on our circle, a Sweet Shop, Habitat for Humanity and others. Susan: So, tell me about your background, Lora. You’ve done a lot in the biking community including the former Run to the Heartland event from a few years ago. Lora: Well, for the last three years I’ve owned a business in downtown Sebring called Dog Town USA. It was my dog, Levi, who has been my biggest influence and inspiration. People love to spoil their pets so

I’ve given them a place to do just that. Downtown Sebring has truly evolved. I was involved with the community redevelopment agency. They have really made downtown Sebring beautiful. They have done a lot of things to improve Sebring. Empty buildings are now being rented out to new businesses and redeveloped because of our Community Redevelopment Agency grants (CRA). We want downtown to be a beautiful place to have events. It’s coming along great! Our downtown is just impressive! We had our 12 hours of Sebring event at Sebring International Raceway, and what a great a way to show off our city. People who haven’t been here are going to see a lot of changes here! I can’t wait for everyone to see this.

Facebook: Sebring Bike Fest, Don’t miss the Born To Ride Custom Bike Show, Sat April 16

Susan: What is your position with the Sebring Development Partnership? Lora: I am their coordinator. The partnership is made up of people from the City, the Chamber of Commerce, and the Tourist Development Agency. There’s a lot of local folks who have a lot at stake here. They have a lot involved. It’s been a really good outlet for all of us. Susan: Tell me about the Circle in Sebring. Lora: It’s called Circle Park. All of the streets that come off that circle are like spokes from a wheel. That’s where the Sebring Bike Fest is going to be held. It’s one of the few Circle Points in the state of Florida. Most have squares. This has been a real pleasure working with the city of Sebring. tax day; what better way to start the day off by putting your taxes in the mail and getting on the bike and coming out to Sebring to see us! We just really look forward to having everyone come back and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and beauty of Sebring. We have a fabulous poker run, great entertainment, and look forward to welcoming everyone back here. Right now, check us out on Facebook. We will be posting items of interest about our event on our Facebook page. Susan: Thank you, Lora, for the great interview! All of us at Born To Ride look forward to seeing you at the Sebring Bike Fest!

For example, they have a redevelopment committee that sponsors sculpture projects. Artists come from all over the United States to this event. I think people coming to the bike fest are going to be pleased with the changes to downtown Sebring. So many businesses have filled up! It will give everyone an opportunity to visit all the bike vendors and the businesses here as well. Susan: What else will be going on? Lora: We start the event on Friday at noon. There will be bands playing Friday and Saturday. Social media is very helpful. There hasn’t been a motorcycle event for three years now. People have been calling me asking if there is anything going on. And that’s a real testament to having this event; people want to come out and be a part of

something fun. Susan: Speaking of social media, tell me why you chose to work with Born To Ride? Lora: Ron Galletti has been a real blessing. I called him awhile back when we received the statistics from the survey. People wanted an event. We discussed a good time to have this event and Ron suggested to have it prior to Leesburg. Both Ron and Debbie, and the kids, are people who I’ve missed over the years. They are a delight to meet and get to know. Ron and his family have been instrumental at Sebring in terms of the biker community. Susan: Any last words, Lora? Lora: I would like to tell people to come back and re-visit us. We are going to get the party started on April 15. I know that’s

As I rode the Road King up onto the trailer, I uttered words of apology to the old girl because she had only been treated this way when something was wrong and I had to get her to a mechanic. But I only had a short window for this road trip and there was much to see and do. My road trip partner doesn’t ride motorcycles, so this was the best and quickest way to get to northern Arizona and have plenty of time for fine art photography and camping. We chose to leave in the early Saturday morning hours of a rainy October night and planned to be at Monument Valley by sunrise on Monday morning. Neither my body, especially my ass, nor my mentality was willing to ride those 1,700 miles in that amount of time. So, I strapped that puppy in for a great road trip of camping in the

red deserts of Arizona and Utah; riding the long windy roads through some of the most beautiful country in the world, sleeping under the star filled desert skies and hopefully capturing that beautiful scenery in beautiful Nikon vision. This trip was about more than just good times though. This was the third installment of what has become known as Lakota’s Memorial Ride for Pets and Wildlife, a trip to help raise money for three different animal welfare facilities. Basically, I’m already going on a road trip and I use that trip to ask friends and businesses to donate any amount of money they feel comfortable with to help out some of my favorite animal causes. I setup a page on Facebook and only donators are allowed to follow virtually follow me as I

take them along on my photographic journey. For some reason people seem to like my photography. In three trips I have raised a little over $10,000 to share with the three animal rescue facilities, this year raising $4,600. The first 24 hours were kind of a blur of highway road signs, truck stops and fast food—and it rained for pretty much the whole trip out there. But as we finally made our pit stop in the Navajo Tribal Lands, the morning welcomed us as the skies parted for a short while and showed us a preview of the week ahead. As we entered Monument Valley the rain clouds opened up once again and we began to consider that we may have to forgo the tent until the rain left. But after a short time, the rain stopped just long enough to BORNTORIDE.COM | BTR 21

set up camp overlooking the three sentinels of Monument Valley. I have been camping for most of my life and I have never had a campsite with this kind of view right out of my tent “door.” It was spectacular! After camp was set up and it began to rain once again, we decided to go check out the road through the park and found out we also could do some mudding in the Trailblazer. I guess that is one advantage to trailering, I had both of my vehicles out there to take on any road that we wanted to travel down…no matter what the conditions were. Monument Valley was the main destination on this trip, and let me tell you it is one of the most beautiful places in this country. I grew up on John Ford and John Wayne movies, so this is the land I think of when I think of the western USA. All around red rock spires and buttes stretch to the skies and one can understand the reverence the Navajo hold for this land. The rainy weather had awakened the desert scrubs and they were showing off yellow flower buds against the red sands of the desert. At night the sky is filled with all the stars possibly seen by the naked eye with the light pollution so minimal this far from anything that could be considered metropolitan. One thing about being a landscape photographer is the need to always get up a few hours before sunrise to find the best place to shoot the beginning of a new day in the best light. Usually, I get up that early because I need to drive/ride to a spot away from camp and then set up for the morning photo session. But at this campsite, that wasn’t the case. Basically, I woke up and stepped right out of my tent into the best possible place to watch or shoot the valley sunrise. I set up my camp chair and tripod, poured a cup of caffeine and just waited … in awe of what I was seeing. The sun rose between the two iconic sentinels and brought life to the valley. I was right where I needed to be, spiritually as well as physically. Our plan for the rest of the day was to ride just across the border into southern Utah to visit a place called Mexican Hat. It’s located along historic Route 163 which also passes a place made famous in the classic Robert Zemeckis film Forrest Gump, but more on that later. Rob drove the Trailblazer while I led the way on the Road King. The speed limit on these roads is 70mph, so cruising along at 80 BORNTORIDE.COM | BTR 25

through the desert is just spectacular, and it took us no time to reach the pull-off to go off road around Mexican Hat. The packed sand on the side road through the protected lands was no problem for the Road King, so I led the Trailblazer through the desert until we reached a pull-off with a trail that lead to the San Juan River at the base of the surrounding red rock mountains. We spent some time here and then rode around the valley a bit more, continuing to be awestruck by the land around us. On the ride back to Monument Valley, I reached at least one place where I opened up the Road King to get her into triple digit territory. I just had to do it … I couldn’t help myself. The next day’s plans were made months in advance. I mentioned before that I grew up watching John Ford and John Wayne movies. The way most of us picture the west is based on their films like The Searchers and the cavalry trilogy; Fort Apache, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon and Rio Grande. So, riding horses through Monument Valley was on my bucket list, and here I was with a beautiful sunny day and hours of day light to check it off the list. The previous day inside the park I noticed a native camp with a horse corral, so we drove in to check on rates and times. We signed up for a three-hour trip through the valley guided by a Navajo native who took us to places no vehicles can reach. We crossed sand dunes, desert streams, and found waterfalls set deep inside the valley. We ran the horses through flat scrub desert surrounded by red rock buttes, into the cool shadows of open air caves large enough to build a house in. We saw wild horses that still run through the valley and paused to watch … and for me I almost went back in time. So far, in just a couple of days, I had checked at least four things off my bucket list; shoot a sunrise, camp and ride horses all in Monument Valley, checked out the place along Route 163 made famous in Forrest Gump, and once again—more on that later. And with that, I’m going to save the rest of this adventure story for next month. We’ll visit Valley of the Gods, Vermillion Cliffs, and Grand Canyon and put our feet in the Colorado River where it begins its journey down the Grand Canyon. This year marked the 75th anniversary of the world’s largest motorcycle event— Daytona Bike Week. Just hearing that word, an arsenal of mental images immediately flushes the cranium with a half-million people, speed, short pipes, shorter daisy dukes, drinks, music, sunburn, and general debauchery. For many motorcycle enthusiasts, they save all year to run wild on the mecca of the motorcycle world. But Daytona has a dirty side. Many of the revelers on Main Street may not even know there’s a whole ’nother culture, equally enthusiastic about the two-wheeled world, just a little closer to I-95 than the beach— dirt bikers.

Dirt bikes? Well, yes. While most were enjoying some of Daytona’s better cuisine/ events, like the hot dog eating competition and good ol’ fashioned coleslaw wrasslin’, the knobby-tired kids were attending/ participating in their own events. Here’s a quick synopsis of some of the more popular dirt bike racing events held during Bike Week. DAYTONA SUPERCROSS Let’s start with the granddaddy of the dirt bike events, the Daytona Supercross by Honda. Every year since 1971, Daytona International Speedway has opened its gates and its beautiful infield grass patch to make room for tens of thousands of fans,

hundreds of riders, and a couple hundred truckloads of Florida soil—dumped right on the DAYTONA logo at the bottom of the start/finish line. This event was round 9 of 17 in the Monster Energy AMA Supercross series. Pro riders, aboard 450cc and 250cc machines, in separate classes, raced against each other on a closed course filled with 75-foot triples, whoops, hairpin turns, and endless ruts. www.daytonainternationalspeedway.com RICKY CARMICHAEL DAYTONA AMATEUR SUPERCROSS The GOAT (greatest of all-time) himself, five-time supercross champion Ricky Carmichael, returned again this year to BORNTORIDE.COM | BTR 35

ATV SUPERCROSS AT DAYTONA The Daytona dirt was well used this year. The day after RCSX, it was the ATV’s turn to churn some laps for the second annual ATV Supercross at Daytona—40 classes of Pro and Amateur racers duked it out on. www.atvmotocross.com AMA PRO FLAT TRACK Flat Track is a bit like NASCAR on two wheels. Also called Dirt Track racing, Flat

Track took place under the lights behind turns 1 and 2 at the Speedway on a relatively new, quarter-mile dirt track. The season-opener started here with two nights of racing, each hosting a 25-lap main event. Each night was scored as separate events. There are two classes GNC1 (Grand National Championship), which featured the Pro class on larger displacement bikes, and GNC2 highlighted the stars of tomorrow.

www.amaproracing.com/ft/ AMSOIL GNCC RACING PRESENTED BY MAXXIS The next two events are where Daytonaish gets really dirty. Grand National Cross Country Racing is the premier off-road racing series in the States. Started over 40 years ago, this series starts its racing season during Bike Week and meanders up the East Coast and ends in Indiana in

November. This year, The Moose Racing Wild Boar GNCC took place at the Rodman Plantation in Palatka, FL, about 50 miles away from Boot Hill. The event is broken down into several categories: ATVs and UTVs race on Saturday and motorcycles on Sunday. Then there are pro, amateur, women and youth divisions. Each day there were around 30 classes,

racing a closed-course through the fields, woods, and palmettos of eastern Florida. Each class lines up, bar-to-bar for a deadengine start, then barrel into the first turn to (hopefully) get the holeshot, then a nearly 3-hour afternoon of head-to-head racing ensues. www.gnccracing.com KENDA FULL GAS SPRINT ENDURO PRESENTED BY MOOSE RACING We end our quick dirt racing lesson, with the

newest race on the scene, and actually the first dirt event of Bike Week. The KFGSE is in its sophomore year as a racing series. The Alligator, as it’s called, is a two-day, off-road racing event that took place the Wednesday and Thursday, in Bunnell, FL, before Bike Week technically started. Sprint racing is different than GNCC racing in that each rider races the clock, not each other, and the fastest rider wins. Each day is scored as a separate event. Racers register by age group and skill level.

There are winners in each class as well as overall podium finishers for each day. There are two closed-courses. The first course is laid-out through open fields with non-stop switchback turns and a few straightaways. The second, is a course marked through the woods. The lap times are roughly 4 and 11 minutes, respectively; hence, sprint enduro. Each course is raced three times each day. www.sprintenduro.com There it is, some of the more popular non-street bike events around the Daytona

professional advice. When stock markets and the economy as a whole take a temporary turn downward or they are unpredictable as to what happens. The best defense is to preserve your money as much as possible while continuing to look for good opportunities. You may able to still get the average rate of return that you would possibly get with a mutual fund portfolio without those risk and fees. This is MY world, if you don’t understand what may happen with this new law in effect, I can help you look at what you have and make some sound decisions. If you can move your retirement account to your own name, this is a must. If you are over 55 you must protect yourself we are headed for some ups and some downs.

It took us 8 years to recover from 2008.

This month I want to address a very important fact that consumers need to be aware of. That is the law being passed about your retirement accounts before this administration ends. It is being put in to place by the Department of Labor. It plainly states that brokers will now be required to be fee based and not able to offer certain investment options to their clients that are now available to the general public. It is critical to understand this because it is being said that the average to middle class person will not be able to seek solid retirement investment advice because it will be cost prohibitive. We expect to have about a 6 month window before the law is effective so the time to act is NOW. This being said it is critical if you are 59 ½ that you look in to the possibility of whether you can roll your retirement even while still working as an (in-service-distribution) or if you have left a job in another state or if you have retirement funds sitting idle in a bank IRA. Some people are concerned about their BTR 42 | BORNTORIDE.COM

retirement accounts as the upcoming year may affect them very much. The markets are not for everyone. Let me say that again. The markets are not for everyone. I work daily with Wall Street and bond markets. I can tell you to consider what stage of life you are in and how long you have until you retire or need the money as well as your overall net worth. Unless you want to experience a real roller coaster ride. Historically the markets go in cycles and if history repeats itself, 2016 may continue to be a real roller coaster of a ride. If you look back over the history of the stock and bond markets typically it has lost significant value and stayed down the entire year when the last day of January was in a down cycle and this year it was. All of us remember 2008, who doesn’t right? Well the one thing I know for certain is that with an election year, Fed’s raising interest rates and the 7 year itch in the markets, economics can dictate a potential correction in the markets. So moral of the story is protect yourself and seek

Ask yourself the simple question; do I have 8 years to recover from a floundering economy again?

It’s 47 acres of biker heaven with special amenities geared to bikers who want the best in accommodations, food, entertainment, and of course, some of the best motorcycling roads in the country. Smooth blacktop, minimal traffic, challenging curves, valleys, and twisties that seem to be made especially for adventuresome riders. Beautiful cabins and rooms are just the beginning of this delightful stay at Copperhead Lodge—making sure that your stay is something you will never forget and guaranteeing that you’ll come back time after time again. So we’re headed for the mountains to have a chat with Michelle Evans. Hey, this is Debbie with Born To Ride TV BTR 44 | BORNTORIDE.COM

and we are here at the Copperhead Lodge in Blairsville, Georgia. This is Michelle Evans, the owner of Copperhead Lodge. I’m going to coin you on this trip—The Biker Den Mother! You’re looking out and taking care of everybody. So Michelle, just give us the geographic location of Copperhead Lodge. Where are you located? Michelle: We are about an hour and a half north of Atlanta, Georgia, tucked in the very northeast corner. In 25 miles you can be either in Tennessee or North Carolina. We’ve got 47 acres total. The Lodge is located in the center of the resort. We have 20 acres on the front side of the resort and 27 acres in the back where the creek is. It’s a bit more private and woodsy set up. We have 28 cabins on the property right now. When we’re done, we’ll have 52.

the second owners. We have a vision where motorcycling enthusiasts can come but also people who are not on bikes. We have a great mix of folks here. We do cater to the bikers. You will see that when you walk in; a big rock fireplace with a motorcycle set inside of it. That really sets the true vision. There are a ton of amenities that the bikers love. For example, last night we had a great band, we have guided rides all week long that our local folks do for us. It’s just motorcycle euphoria here!

Debbie: Michelle, you have created something very special at Copperhead Lodge. When you took it over what changes did you make? Michelle: Mostly “lipstick and rouge” to the building to make it more welcoming. We also altered the model to welcome everyone— not just motorcyclists. Of course the built in amenities are still geared toward them, but Debbie: So you’ve got the cabin atmosphere, we have expanded in to hosting many others the lodge atmosphere, the swimming pool, as well. the amphitheater; you’ve got everything! What we’ve really been impressed with is the Debbie: The vision to build and the catering you do for the biker. development stages have continued to grow. Michelle: Absolutely! Michelle: Yes, the plan was to build out the resort. Our original time line was 5-7 years, however, the area was saturated with foreclosures for the first few years and stifled our growth in the beginning. We’ve sold 8 units over the last 18 months. Debbie: It seems like it’s more than just a business to you. I know first-hand how people love you because of how special you treat them and personal you are to your clients. Michelle: When you are a business owner, I believe it has to be more than a business to you—this is what sets you apart from the rest.

Craven Moorehead If You Don’t Believe Me, Simply ask Spyke

Social media is a terrible jungle of dangerous threats, filled with predatory and unknown entities which cannot be described with normal terminology. Simply put, should we venture into such a place without some sort of protection from the indigenous species— or at least the knowledge of the dangers that lurk within, then we expose ourselves to the possibility of failure, injury or worse. Sitting behind the keyboard is way different than actually being in that unknown territory (although akin to it) and often, even though you have been there before, certain ‘normal’ visions and occurrences that we are familiar with change unexpectedly. This then would be the saga of my two good friends Spyke and Mike. As we all know, the pair is inseparable and have been together for at least two decades. I know that they are always entertaining, but their stage presence is insignificant compared to the love that exists between the two. I understand that some people would not get the bond that can exist between a bird and his pet, but Spyke adopted Mike a long time ago and depends on him for her basic needs. Food, shelter, and companionship are very important to such an intelligent creature. Being separated for any reason would create great agony in this—a very special long term relationship. But at Bike Week 2016 this very egregious separation occurred to the dismay of the couple. It’s an absolute shame that this happened, but due to the power of social media, this publication and word of mouth communication, most of you already know that they are once again reunited. I don’t have the ability to accurately relate the details regarding

this situation because I was not present at the scene, but I can assure you that I can fully understand the feelings of loss between the two who have logged so many years of companionship, miles and dedication. Thanks to God, hard work, and social media the pair are once again together. Normally, I would not try to explain the bond between a person and his pet, but Spyke in this case was separated from Mike and through no fault of her own suffered a great injustice due to the act of a miscreant that should have not come between the two. The journey that the pair suffered for over a week brought a lot of heartache, but in the end the reunion was rewarding to an extent that most could not understand—that is unless you have never had a missing pet. If you don’t believe me, simply ask Spyke. Mike doesn’t talk much. As a journalist (or writer if you will) I speak to a lot of issues that may or may not be entertaining, topical or prominently important but that particular love that can only exist between a person and their pet is oft paramount to that of their significant other. I have pets, and believe me, women come and go but my dog is always my best and most dedicated friend. I hope that y’all have one of these dedicated and loving partners in your life. It will truly make your life better. That’s something Spyke told me about Mike. She also said something to me about not being left out on Main Street on her bike by herself, but I can’t really understand squawk-talk that well as I am still trying to learn the barky bark language that my dogs speak. This is an ongoing and lifelong education for which I have yet to earn the diploma. However, the language of love is not spoken. It is an internal and spiritual thing. A mirror image of sadness and elation exists in everyone’s life. Then there is love and hate. All of these emotions, although insuppressible by human conscience affects the very outcome of our daily existence. We all have to face the ups and downs of our life and try to handle it in the most comfortable and spiritually profitable way possible. Sometimes we just have to keep moving on. The path will always open before us if we allow the vision and faith to guide us. I do believe in true love and I do believe that most have felt that experience. Hate on the other hand is an emotion that should be moderated down to dislike or discomfort. Don’t try to carry this with you, as the burden is very great and it perhaps could break your CRAVEN spirit which is the essence of life.

Spyke & Mike The Abduction

Well my BTR friends, it finally happened, Mike and I go for Bike Week and we end up staying for Spyke Week! We were having such a great time up until Saturday night. Around 11:00 PM, Mike parked the Fat Bird across the street from Dirty Harry’s and I parked my feathered ass in my favorite spot. He was watching the Bobby Friss band and I was watching the crowd pass by. That’s when all hell broke loose and I was forcibly taken from my perch, the mirror. Mike has trained me to stay on the scoot. I come on the scoot, I leave on the scoot. I react to his commands when he’s around. Some of which I wish he’d forget. If Mike leaves me alone, he lets me know what to do while he’s gone. When Mike walks away, we keep eye contact until he is out of sight. And he always comes back and checks on me regularly. A lot of times we ride with friends and they never mind hanging out with me ‘cause I can be so entertaining. Mike usually gives me treats when he returns as long as I’ve been a good bird. While he’s away hundreds of people will stand beside me or behind me and get their Kodak moment, keeping just out of beaks reach, and I am OK with that. I love hanging with you bikers and I’ve been told you love me more. Mike tells me I have more friends than he ever will have, and everyone knows that big birds like me are aggressive for one reason—to defend ourselves. When Mike’s not around I’m no different. This has been our motif for over 20 years and life’s been good to us. Believe it or not it wasn’t a biker who took me. It was a hygiene impaired alcohol filled outdoor enthusiast. Mike says I shouldn’t be politically correct when talking about this idiot because he was a local drunken derelict! Nevertheless, over the course of 15 minutes

he kept trying to pet me so I would come up off my perch. I kept squawking at him and biting his hand. I bit him real good a couple of times but he was relentless. Finally, I just figured he wanted me to be on his hand for a picture, so I eventually gave in and stepped up. BIG MISTAKE! With his other hand he pushed me into his chest and took off through the crowd. He darted down the next side street and I could hear bikers in the distant running behind us yelling “Hey stop, that’s not your bird.” Being a homeless scumbag, he knew all the ins and outs around the buildings. He eventually ran so far away I didn’t even hear the motorcycles. That night he kept me in a big plastic box and I couldn’t get out. Mike asked me, “Why didn’t you bite him again?” I told him because “he had taken off his jacket and wrapped it around me. I couldn’t even move and his B.O. was stifling, like chloroform.” Anyway back to the story, the next morning I was traded off for god knows what to another person and ended up in a cage. It was a big cage and I was the only thing in it. So I clung onto the sides and just squawked. I’ve had nothing to eat or drink since the night before and I was running on adrenaline. He finally put a bowl of water and a slice of bread on the floor. Being famished, I ate and drank it all. I became a real jailbird and now know how it feels to be incarcerated. This was just the beginning of my Spyke Week from hell. Mike has been shaken by this event and he tells me, “Wow Spyke, I’m sooo sorry to have let this happen to you. I take total blame and responsibility. It has taught me a lesson. It’s not the 20th century anymore. I must stop living in that bubble of trust and belief that all people are good hearted. Things have totally changed with the human race as we know it. I remember just 10-20 years ago not locking your doors or leaving the key in the ignition was common practice. How wearing seat belts was an option. I used a paper map to get directions. Every house had a set of encyclopedias. You had to answer the phone that was plugged into the wall just to find out who was calling.” Just when I think Mike is going to continue on about the “good ole days” he says, “I really want to hear more about your Spyke Week from hell, but I think you need some wind time to blow out any really bad memories and to gather your thoughts for next month’s story. So let’s make like a jailbird (or is that a freebird?) and break out into the fresh air.” I tweet, “Yeah Mike, this time you’re right, humanity, civilization, and people in general have changed for the worse. I need to protect myself more when you’re not around. I’m going to bite harder and if that don’t work, I’ll use the stun gun you got me several years ago. I sure could use a good ride!” Mike babbles, “Hell yeah Spyke, you’d better practice so you’ll only need one shot!” He places me in my second favorite spot on the scoot behind the windscreen. He then gets my wings in the wind, his knees in the breeze, and the Fat Bird’s wheels down the road. SPYKE

“Thank You to the Biker Community and everyone who helped get Spyke back to Mike.” Ron Galletti

Christian Motorcyclists Association Hope you all survived a great time at Bike Week! By now it’s all over, and we are left with reminders of a great trip. First, many of us have a few more pounds than before we left for Bike Week. The food is so varied, and incredibly delicious, not to mention the sights to be had while eating on the Intracoastal Waterway, overlooking Hwy A1A, or simply having a snack at the ocean’s edge. I have a few “must see” restaurants to visit during each trip to Daytona, all the way from Mexican to Bar BQ, um-um good! Maybe you picked up a new accessory for your bike, and are excited about bolting it onto your ride. My favorite purchases are lights, lots of lights, can’t get enough lights to be seen by the cagers! My bike may end BTR 80 | BORNTORIDE.COM

up being a little obnoxious, but the best way to stay safe on a ride is to make sure that I am seen by one and all. Fortunately, most law enforcement officers are happy to see a white wall of lights preventing an accident, or worse. The best thing we can bring home from Daytona is the great memories. It’s great to see old friends, meet new ones, and just kick back and be part of the festivities. Probably the greatest blessing concerning spending time with old friends and new is that it doesn’t have to cost a lot. It’s almost like being able to hang out with friends is a free gift. You know, there is another free gift that was being offered at Bike Week, the greatest gift anyone can receive. The CMA ministry teams were busy blessing bikes, praying with folks who need a touch of God upon their lives, and showing people how to accept God’s free gift of salvation. In Ephesians 2:8-9 (NKJV) the Bible tells us,

“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.” Simply put, forgiveness from God is free, and accepted by a person having faith in Jesus. This means that we can’t earn our forgiveness; it is a gift of grace from God Himself. When a person finds themselves believing in the promises of God, it is that faith, and nothing else, that calls the Heavenly Father to pour His grace upon the one seeking forgiveness. And what is grace, it is God’s Riches at Christ’s Expense. In other words, Jesus paid the price for our sins, and because of His love and forgiveness for us, God has mercy on us and forgives us of all sins, past, present and future. Wow, that’s worth getting excited about and shouting out in joy! How was your Bike Week, did you meet the Savior? If not, just call upon His name and let Him change your world!
