Off-Ramp Diver

You are riding along an urban freeway, in the far right lane. Just as you approach an off-ramp, a car in the lane to your left dives in front of you, braking hard to make the off-ramp at the last possible moment. You have very little room to brake or swerve, and a crash may be imminent. When you see an off-ramp ahead, glance around you and evaluate the

situation. Do you see any cars around you that might exit? Are you doing anything that might cause other drivers to expect you to exit? Since you are riding along in what is the exit lane, other drivers may assume that you are going to exit as well—an assumption that might affect their movements. Off-ramps (and onramps) are prime locations for vehicular conflicts. When approaching a

ramp, it is often a good idea to move out of the exit/entrance lane. Take steps to avoid riding in the blind spots of cars traveling around you. In this situation, the driver might not have known that you were even between him and the exit, if you were in his blind spot.

ALL-NEW HARLEY-DAVIDSON MILWAUKEE-EIGHT ENGINE POWERS REIMAGINED TOURING MOTORCYCLE EXPERIENCE MILWAUKEE (August 23, 2016) – The all-new Harley-Davidson® Milwaukee-Eight™ engine, ninth in the lineage of the company’s iconic Big Twin engines, delivers more power and an improved motorcycling experience for riders and passengers while retaining the iconic look, sound and feel of its predecessors. An all-new design, the Milwaukee-Eight engine offers quicker throttle response, more passing power, purer sound, a smoother ride and more of the feeling riders want from a Harley-Davidson Touring motorcycle engine. New Milwaukee-Eight engines will power every 2017 Harley-Davidson Touring and Trike motorcycle model. Milwaukee-Eight engines will be offered in two displacements and three variations: Milwaukee-Eight 107 (107 CID, 1750cc) featuring precision oil-cooled cylinder heads for the Street Glide®/Street Glide® Special, Road Glide®/Road Glide Special®, Electra Glide® Ultra Classic®, Road King® and Freewheeler® models. Twin-Cooled™ Milwaukee-Eight 107 (107 CID, 1750cc) featuring liquid-cooled cylinder heads for the Ultra Limited/Ultra Limited Low, Road Glide® Ultra and Tri Glide® Ultra models. Twin-Cooled Milwaukee-Eight 114 (114 CID,1870cc) featuring liquid-cooled cylinder heads for the CVO™ Limited and CVO™ Street Glide® models. More Power Each Milwaukee-Eight engine produces 10 percent more torque than the engine it replaces in Touring models. In addition to increased displacement, the Milwaukee-Eight engine features a higher compression ratio and four-valve cylinder heads with 50 percent more intake and exhaust flow capacity. The valve train requires no adjustment as the design of the rocker arms enables valve lash to be set at the factory for life. Dual spark plugs for each cylinder contribute to more- efficient combustion. A single chain-driven camshaft is lighter, mechanically less complex and creates less friction and noise. Quicker Acceleration The Milwaukee-Eight engine weighs the same as the engines it replaces, so all of its extra power contributes directly to improved acceleration performance. • The Milwaukee-Eight 107 accelerates 11 percent quicker 0-60 mph, equal to a two to three bike length improvement, and 11 percent quicker from 60-80 mph in top gear, equal to a one to two bike length improvement, compared to the Twin Cam High Output 103. • The Milwaukee-Eight 114 accelerates 8 percent quicker 0-60 and

BTR 10 | BORNTORIDE.COM

12 percent quicker 60-80 than the Twin Cam 110™. Heat Management The Milwaukee-Eight engine offers improved rider and passenger thermal comfort due to reduced heat absorption, increased heat rejection and a redesigned exhaust system. Each Milwaukee-Eight engine features a precision cooling strategy based on the specific demands of the motorcycle model, using a targeted flow of either oil or liquid coolant around the hottest areas of the cylinder heads. A new knock sensor for each cylinder enables more-precise timing control. The rear exhaust pipe is re-positioned and the exhaust catalyst is relocated to move heat away from the passenger. Idle speed is lowered from 1,000 rpm to 850 rpm. Improved Fit A new, slimmer primary drive cover and the lowprofile shape of the air cleaner cover provide improved rider legroom around the engine and an easier reach to the ground for many riders. All Milwaukee-Eight powered models are fitted with an Assist and Slip Clutch with improved hydraulic actuation that reduces clutch lever effort by 7 percent. Reduced Vibration The rubber-mounted Milwaukee-Eight engine features a single internal counter balancer that cancels 75 percent of primary vibration at idle for a more-refined feel and more-comfortable experience for rider and passengers while retaining the classic character of Harley® V-Twin engines. Richer Exhaust Note Lighter valves, a single camshaft, optimized cover designs and improved driveline components eliminate mechanical powertrain noise. The engine intake and air cleaner are designed to reduce intake sound while ensuring maximum air flow. As a result, the new Milwaukee-Eight engine is mechanically quieter, enabling a richer exhaust tone, and meets all global noise and emissions standards while allowing the unmistakable rumble of its exhaust note to resonate. Improved Charging The Milwaukee-Eight engine charging system delivers 50 percent more output to the battery at idle to better support the power demands of Touring riders, including accessory lighting, performance audio, and heated gear and other accessories. New Engine Styling The Milwaukee-Eight engine features sleek, modern styling that respects the heritage of previous Harley-Davidson Big Twin engines. To experience the transformation of the 2017 Harley-Davidson® Touring models for yourself, visit your local Harley-Davidson dealer to schedule a test ride.

The CEO Ride was launched after I survived a life threatening bout with cancer as a way to combine my two passions—business and biking. The concept for this powerful, one of its kind business retreat on two wheels is simple: bring together a group of entrepreneurs who love to ride in a confidential, head-clearing environment where they can share business ideas, solve issues, create plans and strengthen their network. This peer to peer business conference attracts both male and female entrepreneurs from all over the world to discuss topics effecting their respective businesses ranging from leadership transition, expansion, marketing and product development. Each issue is discussed in-depth resulting in a plan complete with action items to be implemented immediately upon returning to the office. On previous rides we’ve rolled through the Red Rock Canyon and Valley of Fire around Vegas, the high roads of Colorado crisscrossing the continental divide and experienced the amazing beauty of Oregon’s coastline and wine country. On this Ride we ventured east into the

“Under any circumstance that type of concentrated business exchange is effective and valuable but the conference really hits high gear when we saddle up to clear our heads and re-arrange our thinking during daily rides through some of the greatest roads this country of ours has to offer.”

fabulous mountains of western North Carolina in order to ride three of the most iconic biking roads in the world. Here’s our agenda: On Day 1 the group met at EagleRider in Marietta, GA to pick up our bikes before rolling north on GA 400 to Hwy 19 that eventually becomes part of the famous Hwy 129 into Blairsville for lunch. From there we headed to our cabins located in

the gorgeous Nantahala Forest, but first detoured in Murphy, North Carolina to ride the little known Joe Brown Highway; a fantastic two-lane rural road that lead us across the Hiwassee Dam. That evening we sat on the wrap around porch and got to know each other better over a great steak and our favorite libations. Day 2 began with breakfast and business on our cabin’s rear deck overlooking the stream that provided a soothing backdrop of rushing water as we worked through an in-depth examination of one rider’s massive five-year growth plan before moving into another’s re-branding efforts. When done we saddled up and headed down Hwy 74 rolling along the Nantahala River to the River’s End Restaurant where enjoyed lunch while watching the rafters float by. Stomachs filled and brains on overdrive we rolled onto the Hellbender 28 to go Zen for a while. Rated number 10 out of the top 100 roads to ride in America, Hellbender skirts the edges of Fontana Lake offering an exciting ride with tons of beautiful scenery making it my favorite ride of all because of its pace, fantastic mix of sweeping curves and intense twisties. This road

screams to be ridden and is the perfect preview to the second phase of our ride that day – Tail of the Dragon. Number 2 on the top 100 roads to ride in America and #1 on the group’s bucket list, The Dragon is considered one of the world’s favorite motorcycling roads because of its 318 curves in 11 miles or in our case 636 in 22 miles as we rode to the end and back. This rollercoaster of a ride starts in North Carolina by what’s now known as the Fugitive Dam where Harrison Ford jumped in the movie by the same name and ends in Tennessee. It has no intersections, businesses or houses… only switchbacks, “S” curves and foot peg scraping excitement! Not to mention a gaggle of photographers capturing your curvy moments. Riding these two great roads back to back and for the first time together created a stronger, closer bond within the group. Our conversations and laughter during the evening’s celebration over smoked ribs, jerk chicken and our favorite beverages went well into the evening. Day 3 began where Day 2 left off – with our saddling up for a ride over and back on the number 3 rated road in America, the awesome Cherohala Skyway. It’s a 43-mile National BTR 20 | BORNTORIDE.COM

Scenic Byway that connects Robbinsville, North Carolina to Tellico Plains, Tennessee. The name “Cherohala” comes from combining the names of the two National Forests it encompasses: “Chero” from the Cherokee and “hala” from the Nantahala. The beauty of this ride comes from elevations that range from 900 feet above sea level at the Tellico River in Tennessee to over 5,400 feet above sea level at the Tennessee-North Carolina state line at Haw Knob. We also made the mandatory picture stop at Bald River Falls located 6 miles off Cherohala down the winding Old River Road. As planned, we made it back to our cabins just in time to miss a massive rain storm and spent the rest of the afternoon in a workshop focused on Social Media marketing and business transformation. Our final night’s celebration consisted of cold beer, great whisky, fine wines and a Cajun feast of gumbo, crawfish etouffee and cochon delait (pulled pork). Again, there was another long evening filled with loud laughter and the requisite busting of each other’s chops. Day 4 – On our last morning together we devoted our business session to a recap of what was discussed, additional feedback

lessons learned and next steps. And as with all prior groups, promises to ride together again before saddling up and reversing our first day’s route back to EagleRider. For entrepreneurs, taking time away from their daily work is always difficult and not lightly done but all leave The CEO Ride exhilarated and exhausted. Over the course of four days the motorcycles and mountains turns a group of strangers into a pack by sharing their unique views on life; an intense desire to succeed and absolute love of riding. Of all I’ve experienced in my nearly three decades spent in the boardroom and the saddle, this is by far the most powerful. For four days it’s no longer lonely at the top for these entrepreneurs who on the surface appear to be running entirely different businesses but come to quickly realize they’ve more in common than not. The power of their business connection combined with the open road serves to prove The CEO Rider’s motto that—“We’d rather ride our motorcycles thinking about business than sit in a conference room thinking about our motorcycles.” I can hardly wait for the next one! About Dwain: Dwain M. DeVille is Author of The Biker’s Guide to Business, When Business and Life Meet at the Crossroads. For nearly three decades he’s served as trusted advisor to today’s top entrepreneurs helping them to build dynamic businesses that dominate. His CEO Ride brings together an elite group of entrepreneurs, who want to enjoy the wind in their face and grab their business by the handlebars. Based in Central Florida, Dwain enjoys riding every month of the year and has toured many parts of the country—both solo and with groups. After all the miles traveled, the appeal of motorcycling remains as strong today as it was at the age of 16, when first throwing his leg over that Honda 100. Contact Dwain M. DISCOVERY ROARS OUT WITH NEW MINI-SERIES

(LOS ANGELES) – A Harley-Davidson is more than a motorcycle. It is a symbol of Americana, built from the ground up by founders Walter and Arthur Davidson and their friend Bill Harley. But the road to success was not exactly smooth – filled with innumerable obstacles, ruthless competitors and extraordinary risks. Together these three young men, the sons of blue-collar immigrants, gave everything they had to ensure the survival of the company they founded. But just how far would they go to reach the ultimate American dream? Discovery’s highlyanticipated miniseries HARLEY AND THE DAVIDSONS will premiere Monday, Sept 5th 9 PM ET/ PT. Consisting of three twohour installments, parts two and three will air on Tuesday, Sept 6, and Wednesday, September 7 at 9 PM ET/PT. “This is the type of compelling and honest storytelling that fits perfectly for Discovery Channel,” said Rich Ross, Group President of Discovery Channel, Animal Planet and Science Channel. “It is a story about brotherhood, an ironclad will to succeed and going against the conventional wisdom of that time. The founders of Harley-Davidson created more than just a motorcycle. They created modern entrepreneurism.” Based on a true story, HARLEY AND THE DAVIDSONS charts the birth of this iconic bike during a time of great social and technological change beginning at the turn of the 20th century. Walter, Arthur and Bill risked their entire fortune and livelihood to launch the budding enterprise. Each of these men faced very different challenges, but it was the motorcycle that united their dreams and ambitions. For Walter Davidson, the venture was a chance to escape from the confines of society – to ignore the rules and build a bike that could go anywhere and ride hard. For Arthur Davidson, it was an opportunity to finally make good on his BTR 26 | BORNTORIDE.COM

name. And for Bill Harley, the bike gave him hope to break free from his overbearing parents and apply his talent as an engineer. Built in a shed out of Milwaukee, these motorcycles were able to survive nearly

every condition imaginable. And Walter certainly put the bikes to the test. His ferocious ambition propelled him to become a top motorcycle racer while competing in the deadly competitions sweeping the nation. Walter’s daredevil exploits put HarleyDavidson on the map – and while risky – pushed the company to eventually overtake their archrival competitor, Indian, which had a stronghold on the market. But the founders also faced an underlying moral question – just how much would they risk to become successful? Racing could often have deadly consequences, especially with the rise of the hazardous motordrome competitions sweeping the country. Fuelled by ingenuity, innovation and design, the founders of Harley-Davidson

faced off against their much bigger rivals. If things couldn’t get any more difficult, the Great Depression hit and the motorcycle industry was decimated. But HarleyDavidson continued to defy the odds with their forward-thinking business ideas. HARLEY AND THE DAVIDSONS looks at how the founders continued to grow its loyal following like no other competitor– whether it was securing the American Army contract and teaching riders how to make repairs on the field to embracing boisterous motorcycle clubs across the nation. They would eventually channel all their resources with their biggest risk yet – creating the world’s first superbike, a state-of-the-art racing machine for the masses. Walter, Arthur and Bill cemented Harley-Davidson’s reputation as a builder of bikes that goes anywhere, could ride hard and ignored all the rules. It’s a legacy that has endured over 100 years – and at the heart of the brand and its loyal riders. The series is led by an all-star cast including Michiel Huisman (“Game of Thrones”) as Walter Davidson, Robert Aramayo (“Game of Thrones”) as William (Bill) Harley and Bug Hall (“The Little Rascals”) playing the role of Arthur Davidson. Other cast members include Stephen Rider (“Daredevil”), Jessica Camacho (“Sleepy Hollow”), Daniel Coonan (“EastEnders”), Annie Read (“Awkward”), Wilson Bethel (“Hart of Dixie”), Dougray Scott (in “Mission: Impossible 2”), Gabe Luna (“Matador”), Alex Shaffer (“Win Win”) and newcomers Essa O’Shea and Sean Scully. HARLEY AND THE DAVIDSONS is penned by Evan Wright, Seth Fisher and Nick Schenk. Dimitri Doganis is the Executive Producer on behalf of Raw Television and John Goldwyn is the Executive Producer on behalf of Discovery. Ciáran Donnelly serves as Executive Producer and Director with Stephen Kay as Director.

Most people think a group is all about “fitting in” but we’re the ones who always “fitted out”. Being able to meet passionate women motorcyclists is always a blessing. My role with the Born To Ride magazine allows me these precious moments to savor, learn, and share other people’s journeys with our valued dedicated readers! I was very happy and excited to talk with Leticia Cline, one of the founding members of the Iron Lilies. Her zest runs deep for motorcycling. She is blessed with a beautiful outlook on life, love, and the knowledge of motorcycles. Sit back, relax, and take in the conversation Leticia and I had about the amazing Iron Lilies! Susan: Who gave you the motorcycling bug? Leticia: I’ve been riding since I was four years old when my dad put me on a Honda 50. I took to it quickly and even raced motocross. In addition, over the years, that evolved into some modeling jobs with motorcycles magazines and companies. I was a sports commentator for motocross for a long time. I’m also a journalist. I write for websites, magazines, and blogs. My husband and I own a co-op motorcycle garage in Orlando called Standard

Motorcycle Company. We are a big motor family. I don’t even own a car; I ride my bike! Susan: You eat, breathe, and sleep, everything when it comes to your businesses! Leticia: (laughing) Definitely! It’s an amazing thing that we took a hobby and made a living out of it. It’s what I’ve always wanted to do. Susan: Where does the Iron Lilies come in to your busy life? Leticia: I moved back to Orlando in August. There was a group of women in Orlando who I would always run into. They all ride Harley Sportsters and that’s the bike I ride. We started talking and hanging out with one another. We really enjoyed riding together all the time – like four days a week! It’s amazing. We started thinking of a name for

our group. We wanted to give justice and homage to women who rode motorcycles back in the early 1920s: Lillian Farrow, Lillian LaFrance, and Lillian Hauerwas. Here are little snippets of these trailblazing women taken from the Iron Lilies website: Lillian Farrow owned the most prominent Harley Dealership in the country in the first half of the 1900s. She was also the only woman motorcycle dealer in the world. Being a single mother of 3, she managed to keep the business alive during WWII by selling used motorcycles and parts since all new bikes were produced solely for the military and it’s because of that effort that her shop A.D. Farrow Co. is America’s oldest continuously operated Harley-Davidson dealership celebrating 104 years. Lillian LaFrance became a wall of death rider in 1924 after attending a carnival and BORNTORIDE.COM | BTR 45

seeing only men do it. She was billed as “The Girl Who Flirts With Death.” She used skull and crossbones as her logo and was the first person to ride a wall in a scaled down midget racing car. Lillian Hauerwas logged over 65,000 miles on her Harley by 1921. She was quoted in Motorcycle Illustrated on September 16th, 1915 saying, “Can a girl ride a motorcycle and still retain every characteristic that is expected of our best young womanhood? I certainly believe so, and my observations cover several years. ... As far as the girl rider is concerned, motorcycling is just what she makes it – and it’s so easy to make it simply a pleasant, refreshing and economical pastime that I constantly wonder why more girls do not avail themselves of it.” Leticia: At one point, we were talking with some people and they asked us if our name was used in reference to guys who ride over 1,000 miles and call themselves “Iron Butt Riders.” We thought about that and laughed, liked the concept, and said, ‘When we host an event and someone rides their bike over 1,000 miles, they will receive the Iron Lillie

Award!’ Susan: The Iron Lilies is an actual business, correct? Leticia: Yes. We are an LLC (limited liability corporation) and are in the process of obtaining our 501c3 non-profit organization status. We are also in the process of trademarking our name. We all have different roles. We hold a meeting every week. From the finances to marketing, to inventory and upcoming events, we have to meet weekly to go over our various business components. We are hired to attend events. Meaning, we come in and promote the event. For example, we were hired to ride to the Laconia Bike Week event. We rode from Florida to New Hampshire. Once we got there, we set up and led various rides; sometimes two rides a day. We really do a lot! Susan: What is your focus with the 501c3 non-profit you are creating? Leticia: We have established a great relationship with Orlando Harley and East Orlando Harley in setting up fundraisers and giveaways around the area. We give out

small monthly donations to people that need it, and one large donation or sponsorship every year for a woman that may want to attend, for example, MMI (Motorcycle and Marine Institute). We want to empower women in any male-dominated industry. In addition, if someone wants to take the MSF course, we can provide scholarships for that. I hate seeing someone buying a motorcycle and not having the money to invest in proper education or gear. Susan: How do you get information on folks that need the help? Leticia: We have a lawyer and accountant on board that look at all the proposals. Each one is researched for authenticity and need. We don’t hand over cash; we will take a bill and pay that once the research has been completed and approved by our lawyer and our board. We are looking for that story; of a woman wanting to better herself. Susan: You talk about getting hired leading rides and hosting events. Tell me how everyone finds out where you are and what you’re up to. Leticia: We have a very large following of

people from social media. When we let folks know we’re going to be at an event, lots of people show up. We do the guided rides, or sometimes, we have fun at an event and do some technical riding skill sets like figure eights and tight circles. We’ve even entered ourselves in some biker rodeo games. We go head to head with some of the best male riders out there. They are very competitive! I mean ‘really’ competitive! Some of us walk away with the winning trophies. We also do lady-only events at the Harley BTR 48 | BORNTORIDE.COM

dealerships. We can teach a tiny woman to pick up an Ultra Glide touring rig all by herself. Once someone sees a 115 pound, 5’ tall woman pick up a bike, it puts a new perspective on what a woman can really do when she has proper training. We inspire people to know that they can ride a bike. We show women how to change their oil, complete a pre-ride check list, and other important items. The one thing we DON’T do is bikini bike washes! We’ve been asked to do them and we always say “no, but we

will show everyone how to change the oil in their bikes.” We always said from the beginning, that if we ever did anything like a bikini bike wash, it would discredit us from being serious motorcycle riders. We work really hard to prove that we ride motorcycles. What saddens me is seeing women, setting those of us who are serious about riding motorcycles, back 20 years by participating in events like that. Susan: I praise and commend you and the

other Iron Lilies for having and keeping your high standards! Leticia: Thank you! Susan: There are other women that are a part of the Iron Lilies. Leticia: I love the diversity of our group! Here are some mini bios of the Core Group of the Iron Lilies! Leticia Cline: I grew up with my dad building bikes in the living room of our house. My baby photos are of me sitting on rat bikes and choppers and after a while it just

became instinctual. I favored the smell of grease over flowers. My dad put me on a Honda 50 when I was 4 and I never looked back. We would spend summers in his garage taking apart bikes, polishing all the pieces and putting them back together, he would handle each piece as if it were a rare and ancient artifact all while telling me what it’s function was and how it related to life. He was quite the philosopher and at the time, to a pre-teen little girl it was annoying. Once I got older I started to appreciate his

life lessons more and we would ride to biker events together. When I started announcing for Supercross and Motocross races I would bring my dad with me and then when I had my son I bought him a Honda 50 for his 4th Birthday to continue the tradition. My father passed away the summer of 2008 and it devastated me. I rode his Softtail to the funeral and then I never got on a bike again until spring of 2014. Before then my life was consumed with a motorcycle race every weekend, dealer’s

coach, Harley Fit Specialists, a scientist, a psychologist and women from many different walks of life.

conventions, motorcycle events and just riding but I suddenly found myself unable to go to any of those things. I changed my life completely, moved to NYC and became the director of Marketing and PR at a fortune 500 company. The stage was set for me to be the next powerful lady in business but it just wasn’t me. After 5 years of being on autopilot I woke up and moved to back Florida to find myself again. In March 2014 I took my son to Daytona Supercross. The smell of the exhaust and dirt, the excitement on my little boys face as he watched the race only assured me of where I belong. The ride home was emotional but I knew what I had to do. The next day I rented a Thruxton, rode 300 miles to a motorcycle event and bought my dad a patch to place on his grave. The following week I purchased my Iron 883 and now I ride all over the country. I was afraid that riding would be to unbearably sad to not share it with my father but strangely I feel closer now to him than I ever did before. And that’s one of the great things about motorcycles: they’re more than a form of transportation ... they’re a form of transformation. Currently I’m a journalist for some of the top motorcycle magazines and blogs. Every day, I get to test parts, gear, and motorcycles and write about it. I am also in the process of getting my MSF Rider Coach Certification and have an all-women’s traveling class

planned for 2016 along with a 10,000 mile trip across America with Kristen Lassen called, The Lost Latitudes. Kissa Von Adams, KVA is a Florida native, born and bred in Seminole County. She is a performance artist by trade and is a founding member of one of the first & longest running burlesque shows in Florida. She is currently rebuilding her ‘96 rigid Evo Sportster with the help of Jared Agin. Tracy Herendon: Born and raised in south Florida, I’ve always had a passion for being outdoors. Exploring beaches, swamps, everglades and living in a bikini was just the way I lived my life. I translated that love into my current career as a merchandise analyst at an international swimwear corporation. Dana Cooley: I always had a passion and desire to ride. So I went and got my first brand new Kawasaki 250 right off the showroom floor. I rode it for the first three months and realize this is just a soupedup lawn mower. So I turned around and I purchased a Kawasaki 600. I loved that bike, and had a lot of memories with it. When I started working for Harley, I fell in love with their bikes. And after 4 years with the Kawasaki, I purchased my first Harley. Owning a Harley has been one of the best decisions I’ve made. It leads me to meet some amazing people. I love the direction my life has gone, and having these girls by my side through my journey. I couldn’t ask

Kasey Carrere: “Presently, I work for a biological consulting firm full-time as a Project Manager, conducting data analysis on water treatment, plant growth and threatened endangered species, and negotiate credit sales with local, state and federal agencies for large restoration and enhancement projects. I am also a business student at Valencia Community College and I’m in the application process to get my Masters in Business Administration. On the side, I help with the promotion and organization for the Iron Lilies, I am an organizer for The Hive, a chapter of an environmental awareness non-profit organization called Ideas For Us, and work in the garage on my Evo chopper.” Dee Basualdo: “My real name is Deneille but I go by Dee. I was born in Queens, NY but raised in Miami, FL. My nationality is Argentinan / Italian/ Spaniard. Growing up I always had a passion for sports, especially soccer. I grew up playing travel soccer until I was 18. Till this day I participate in a coed soccer and flag football for a local league. I was raised by my mother and step father, where his passion is cars and motorcycles. He introduced me to my first dirt bike when I was 12. The moment I jumped on to my very own Yamaha 50cc I knew I was born to ride. I rode that dirt bike nearly every day, falling left and right, popping the clutch,

and eating dirt, but never gave up. The more I rode the more I fell in love with it. When I turned 15 my stepfather gave me my first motorcycle which is a 1985 Honda rebel 250. I love that bike so much that I still have it and will never let it go. In 2015, I joined the Orlando Harley-Davidson team as a stock manager, and bought my very first Harley. I must say ever since I made that purchase, my life has been falling into place.” Sara Fury: Sara moved to Florida from Hawaii after living with her dad who was in the military. “I’ve always loved motorcycles and all that comes with them. The first time I rode, I knew it was where I wanted to be. My first bike was a 1975 Honda CB200. The first replacement I did was change out one of the floats in the carb, and accomplishing that tiny procedure made me feel so proud of myself! I wanted to do more, learn more, fix more. I’m definitely the type that I can’t sit and watch. I wanted to be the one getting my hands dirty, and that’s exactly what I did. After moving to Orlando, I made it a mission to find anyone and everyone who rode bikes in town. I met Leticia and lots of awesome people who shared the same love for motorcycles as I do. Being part of the Iron Lilies and having that sense of community

is fuel for the soul. I’m so grateful for this group of girls and everything they bring to the table.” Samantha Campana: She graduated with a BA in Psychology, and by day is a Clinical Psychiatric Technician for a mental health recovery center. She started riding over a year ago but not without hardships. In 2012, she had a close friend pass away in a motorcycle accident, and it made her rethink her decision for a couple years, yet the urge never went away. When she made the move to Florida, she noticed many more people riding bikes all year around and suddenly the feeling of freedom and two wheels started creeping back into her mind. She went by herself to Daytona Biketoberfest and then her mind was set. She started looking for a motorcycle, and landed on her Voodoo Purple Iron 883. Once she’s sat on it and turned the throttle, it all felt right. The joy overpowered the fear of riding. Now she is looking forward to doing more work on her own bike and continuing to meet more like minded people. Susan: Did you all come together as friends or did an event bring you together? Leticia: A couple of us knew each other just by seeing one other around town. Social

media is where it really happened. We put together a night where we all met. We all clicked and it works. The core group is eight of us. A lot of people want to join. But we have to keep the core group together because that’s our business. We allow others to ride with us, but it will always be the core eight because of the business aspect. In addition, the core group ride Harleys AND must ride at least 10,000 miles a year. We do love riding with other motorcyclists! Susan: Image is very important to the Iron Lilies. That’s impressive. Tell me, in your own words, why? Leticia: Yes! We strive to be the best when it comes to our business and when we’re out in public. We can’t, nor will we ever, water that down. We have to make sure that being a member, we have to be accountable, represent the companies that hire us, represent our name, our reputations, profession, etc. If something goes wrong, it makes us all look bad. We’ve worked too hard to let the slightest error or missteps occur. Susan: Thank you, Leticia, for spending time with me talking about the Iron Lilies. All of us at Born To Ride look forward to seeing you very soon! Susan Hurst BORNTORIDE.COM | BTR 53

Kruisin with Kati, Happy September

Happy September to all you readers out there! Have no fear October is right around the corner and hopefully it will be a lot cooler, this heat is a killer! My husband and I finally decided to brave the scorching temps and chance of rain to do a breakfast run down to Everglades City. It was a nice enjoyable ride down considering we left at 8 a.m., before the sun started to heat the roads. Taking SR29 from LaBelle to Immokalee is pretty much a straight shot unless you take the turn onto the New Market Road bypass. At the south end of town, the bypass dumps out back on 29. Smooth sailing the rest of the way to Everglades City from there, might be two curves along the way. Only two curves, I know sounds like a disappointing ride huh? Well really it isn’t that at all. Once you’ve made it to Everglade City you’ll see there is plenty to do. We stopped at the first restaurant we come to which was Island Café, very popular place for riders. One thing about riders is if ya sit near another rider that’s already there expect to have some conversation. It’s funny how we can yack with each other for a bit finding out info on the bike they ride and where they rode in from but lots of times never even asking the other’s name. Another fun thing that just come to mind is how we can see a bike and know who it belongs to by the rider’s face. I guess bikes have priority over a person’s name in some cases. Once we got our bellies full and paid the bill we got on our way – stepped out the door and holy moly, it was already hot as heck out. I bet it was in

the high 90s, time to see what we come to see and head home to the AC. You know if you are going to go that far south you might just as well extend it down to the Smallwood Store in Chokoloskee. To get there just follow 29S to the first street on the right past Havana Café. Follow that road around to the end and there ya go. Cool place to visit and take photos! I love taking photos and if you ever want to see some of them just visit my facebook page at KruisinWith Kati. … I think in the near future I’m going to see if we can do an overnighter in the everglades so I can get some sunset shots, bet it’s beautiful down there in the evening. Well that’s it for this run, glad we went and very happy when we got home, musta been the AC. Ok for some updates … first of all Thank you to Horney’s Custom Cycles in Ft. Myers for all the great prizes they donated for the free raffle at Dick’s Restaurant & bar. Thank you Cigar Bar & Addictive Ink also for your contributions. The event turned out as good as it could be considering it being in the middle of the summer. Parking lot was packed with bikes, the tent area with all the tables was full and so was the inside of the restaurant. Very good event!! Even the 10.00 biker buffet was a huge hit with the riders … Like I said, Very good event. Thank you everyone who were involved, a total team effort to pull this together. Please folks if you are in the area looking for some good food Dick’s Restaurant & Bar in Alva really has it going on. The owner’s heart is in this event; he likes bikers it’s not just about the almighty buck … please go check them out.

Everywhere Eddy here and the heat is on! Riding here in Florida has been incredibly HOT this summer until a week ago when I had LOVE JUGS installed on my 2013 Harley Road Glide! Well after a week of riding the verdict is in. The Cool-Master all stainless steel LOVE JUGS far surpassed my expectations, and they look COOL too! They are touted as “The Most Powerful & Effective V-Twin Cooling System in the World” and I have to agree! I had Reinhardt’s Motorcycles in Lutz, FL install them for me, and as soon as we flipped the switch and heard the sound of the Dual Fans I knew I was going to like them! As I was riding, I felt the engine heat was amazingly lower. The big test came when I found myself in stop and go traffic and the engine heat was far less when standing still. So there you have it … when you’re doing a lot of hot weather riding and you want to keep your V-Twin cooler, I highly recommend getting a set of LOVE JUGS. I have to say that I loved jugs before, but now I really love jugs, my new LOVE JUGS that is! Until Next Time, Everywhere Eddy

Craven Moorehead THE HEAT IS STILL ON!

The summer is waning and the possibilities that approach either leave you with shell shock or hopefulness. Last month, I wrote about the horrible mud-slinging in the upcoming election and discussed the possibilities of the possible results. It’s still a disgusting display of negativity, and lately I try to remain as positive as possible – even though there is little hope for any miracle windfall in my financial situation. Too many people promise and very few deliver. It is becoming a serious situation, not only for myself, but for thousands of people out there in our great country. I suppose that things are difficult in other locations on the planet but since I cannot afford to travel for leisure, I couldn’t report on it. I am a Christian by faith and from what I know about reading the Bible, (limited time studying – daily scripture reading excluded) I recall that the prophecy is that in the end times there will be floods, earthquakes, fires, pestilence and other unpleasant things. If this great book has the ability to predict the future, then we are looking at a short period of time to get our s#!t together and get right with God. I never know, so I just keep on going but from what I remember the good book said that the Anti-Christ would come and as much as I thought that it was Obama, for some reason we survived. Although I lost a lot of stuff in the past 8 years, I am still thankful that I am alive and have another day to live on and try to make stuff better. Regardless of my losses and my political slant on the upcoming election, I still am a little apprehensive thinking about the Democrats taking my guns away! As long as you go out and vote (I’m registered independent) it’s all good and I’m not going to try to tell you to vote for Trump. My own decisions have been the outcome of my current situation and y’all are probably sick of hearing my political rants, but I just can’t help it. Remember: “No good deed goes unpunished” … did I say that last month? At this point, I can’t

remember! Sometimes I wonder if there is a simple solution to the current situation. I wonder if people actually consider how we became the land of the free to begin with. I know as bikers, we are some of the remaining true patriots that love and protect our current level of freedom. Most all of us have served this great nation in one way or another, and a sure fire way to get your ass kicked is to try to insult a biker’s heritage! There are literally hundreds of biker borne organizations that are out there right now carrying on our fight to freedom of the open road. Yes, there are a myriad of rules and regulations involved in our lifestyle, but when compared to the trials and tribulations of our forefathers, these would appear to be a trivial afterthought. If there is any chance of saving our great country from the other oppressive regulations that are currently being forced down our throat, perhaps we should run a biker (on a write in ballot) in the upcoming election. ISIS wouldn’t stand a chance! Terrorism is not anything we would allow. Think about it! Dammit man. Maybe I should run for president! We could have some amazing perks. Imagine fifty cent premium fuel for motorcycles only. Or how about no tax on beer, or perhaps NO TAX AT ALL!! What about a Constitutional Amendment allowing free admission for bikers to the gentlemen’s club? Or perhaps the “Kill a biker – go to jail” dream could possibly fulfilled. I have a million great ideas and no money to put them into action. Perhaps I should be like the Clinton’s and start a “Craven Foundation” and raise millions of dollars for no reasonable purpose. Or maybe I should take my last $12.00 to the casino and hope to win hundreds of thousands. All these plans sound ridiculous and in reality they are. It’s a sad reality and the situation may appear to be getting worse every day – BUT – if you’re still alive and happy about being alive, then just roll with the changes and try to survive all the friggin drama!! I’ve learned that if I ignore the TV and ignore the negative political advertisements, I can feel a little better about life. Remember, these candidates are going to ramp-up the mud slinging in the next two months. At least in October the weather will get better and our riding season will be at hand. We at this time can enjoy the open road and – do yourself a favor and ignore all the political billboards. This crap will all be over in November I can start writing about something more entertaining. … The fall in the south is truly the time to get out there and enjoy your two-wheeled freedom. So while you’re out on the road take a moment to remember all the good brothers and sisters that fought the good fight to keep us free! Enjoy yourselves and stay tuned next month for more great tales from the trailer park. So until then, “speed safely” !

Spyke & Mike Home, home on the range, where Mike and I play. Seldom is heard a discouraging word and the skies are not cloudy all day, my BTR friends. Boy it feels good to be back at the Sanctuary with Mike. When we’re out and about we’ve enjoyed sharing our story, and I’ve treated everyone to lots of kisses and Kodak moments. There were a few naysayers and finger pointers, but for the most part everyone was very happy to see us together again. Whether we were at Quaker Steak & Lube, Biff Burgers, the Red Tiki, Mako’s on the Rocks, or Peggy’s Corral, there was one helluva welcome home celebration for us going on. Dorothy got it right when she said to Toto, “there’s no place like home.” We will be getting back into the full swing of things soon enough, but right now I’m just glad to be sitting on my perch poolside typing for you, my avid readers, informative and always interesting stories about our escapades. Mike tells me he’s got a lot of plans for us with and without the scoot. He’s already taken us to see our favorite single mom’s at the gentlemen’s clubs, Peggy’s for the BTR anniversary party, and to the beach for me to brush up on my surfing as Mike worked on his tan while doing 12 ounce curls. One hot weekend we come across some veterans enjoying the beach life. Mike stops to talk with them. He asks the first one, “What war did you fight in?” The gentleman replies, “the Vietnam War.” He then inquires, “Did you kill anyone?” The ‘ole man comes back with, “I hope not! I was a cook!” I put one wing over my head and squawk, “Oh brother!” The guy beside him was just sitting in his chair and staring off into the surf. Mike asks, “Dude, are you okay?” Without batting an eye, he takes a drink and says, “Today everything wrong is going in my favor.” Mike replies, “You’ve got a drink in your hand and toes in the sand what could be so wrong?” He reaches into his pocket and pulls out a small pin. Holding it out he says, “I can’t seem to find my grenade!” I screech, “yikes!” There are two other guys sitting in chairs and one of them is pointing at me saying, “kitchen, look at that kitchen.” The other dude would jump in and say, “no, that’s chicken. Look at that chicken.” I squawk back, “sorry fellows, you both got it wrong. I’m a colored

seagull.” Mike looks at me and belches, “these guys got a full six-pack going on, but they lack the plastic rings that hold them together! Come on Spyke, let’s make like the Gulf breeze and blow this place.” On our way home we get pulled over by Pinellas’ finest. Mike says to me, “Well Spyke, if it wasn’t for bad luck I would have no luck at all.” He pulls into the parking lot at Quaker Steak, dismounts, and is standing beside the scoot when the officer walks up to him and says, “sir, do you know why I pulled you over?” Mike sheepishly answers, “Well, was it cuz I was doing 50 in a 35; I passed grandma on the shoulder; I did a California stop at the corner? Or … I gave the old man doing 20 mph the finger as I went around him, or I lane split the four kids on the mopeds or. ...” The officer blurts out, “Yes and no. For years I’ve seen you two running around doing all those things and more and I just let it slide. This is the first time I’ve seen ya’ll out on the street since we got the APB for a missing parrot fitting Spykes description a few months ago. All of our badge and gun toting buddies on the East Coast were looking for Spyke and when she couldn’t be found, the alert went out statewide. Over here we were pulling every Tom, Dick, and Harry over that was riding around on a motorcycle with a parrot.” I cackle, “You mean to tell me that there are Mike & Spyke imposters out there?” The officer replies, “yes, there are a few. Now it’s my turn to say it’s great to see you two back together, involved in the community, and making smiles happen for people when they see you both going down the road, at community events, or fundraisers. As for your violations, here is your first and last warning: The gates are down, the lights are flashing, but the train isn’t coming. Now get the hell out of my sight!” Mike looks at his badge and says, “not a problem officer Burns. But first I need one quick Kodak moment for the record. Then just turn your head, pretend to talk into that microphone of yours, and we’ll be gone like the wind.” Mike gets his pic then yells, “come on Spike. Let’s make like a tire and hit the road!” With that said, he jumps back on the scoot and fires it up. He then gets my wings in the wind, his knees in the breeze, and the Fat Birds’ wheels rolling out of the parking lot and down the road minus a bunch of paying paper. SPYKE
