Beginners Biggest Mistake The past 13 years I have taught literally thousands of new riders, as you can imagine we have enjoyed some lively discussions about motorcycles, sports, racing, politics and of course current affairs. There is however one question I hear almost in every class. What bike should I buy? That’s a complicated answer and the truth is, it depends. Numerous variables need to be addressed and thought through before you go out and make a purchase especially if you have never ridden prior to taking a course. Let’s start with some basics: Number one it is essential that you purchase a motorcycle that you are comfortable with, a bike that instills confidence in you. It’s a bike you’re not afraid of. It’s a bike you’re not afraid to drop. It’s a bike you can handle, and it fits you ergonomically. For first time riders who are 5’3 and weigh 120 lbs soaking wet that bike is not a Harley-Davidson Ultra Classic. The Motorcycle Safety Foundation, (MSF) states buying a motorcycle that is too big for the rider is one of their top five biggest mistakes. I always suggest that students purchase a throw away motorcycle, a bike that cost $2,000 - $2,500—a bike that will allow you to continue to develop your skills, and give you confidence in your riding. It’s been my experience that new riders are in too big a hurry and not willing to put in the required practice time. People feel pressure from friends, or riding buddies to suck it up, and get out there and ride. This is not the right move, and for many unfortunately it ruins their desire to ride if they have an
unpleasant experience. New York Times bestselling author Malcolm Gladwell states it takes 10,000 hours of practice to become an expert at a given skill. So to put that into perspective, you would have to ride your bike 10 hours a day every day for nearly three years. Taking a course and riding 8–10 hours during that course is just the beginning. French riders must take a two-week course and pass an on road examination to obtain their license. The cost of that course is $1,500, and upon successful completion the biggest bike they can ride is a 250cc for an entire year. See where I am going with this? If you’re beyond the preliminaries here are a few other factors to consider. How do you intend to use your bike? Commuting, socializing, weekend trips, track days, cross country trips? These are all serious considerations when you make a big purchase. Even if you’re long term goal is completing an iron butt ride you still need to start off with something you can handle. Too many folks buy the wrong bike; they lose their confidence and consequently their desire to ride. Motorcycling is a thrill, but it requires common sense and a pragmatic approach to riding. Start off small; you can always get another bike once you have the skill set. Chris Carr is a national champion motorcycle racer and operator of Two Wheel Adventures Motorcycle Academy, a state of Georgia approved provider for motorcycle training. Today’s review – Werewolves on Wheels. And where should I begin. … This film borders on the edge of, well, I’m not sure. Possibly a horror movie, and certainly a classic example of “biker exploitation” pieces, “Werewolves on Wheels” has it all for those of you who seek the alternative to ‘A’ List films. The story begins as most ‘exploitation films’ do with a group of motorcycles cruising down a desert highway. But WAIT!! These are real “period” Harley-Davidson choppers! Cool! One star for authenticity. … These wonderful old machines are ridden by ‘actors’ that could possibly be (real) bikers. Or perhaps I should say the cast doesn’t feature ‘actors’ that you may have heard of. As it goes along, these folks calling themselves “The Devil’s Advocates” participate in the usual acts of violence seen in other biker exploitation films, such as roughing up rednecks, and creating havoc wherever they go. The group is led by “Adam” (whom you may have seen in Motor Psycho or Peyton Place) who is a tough and somewhat charismatic character, often seen accompanied by Helen, his old lady. At one of their stops, another member of the gang “Tarot” begins his card reading, which brings some of the other members of the gang almost to the point of fear. This curiosity of the unknown brings them to follow Tarot to the place where he says “It’s at.” This place, as it turns out is an old Church which is currently occupied by sect of Satanic Monks. The gang wanders through a wooded path to the courtyard of this church, where the Monks feed them bread and wine. Woops! Bad idea. Beware of monks bearing drugged gifts! All the bikers pass out, and one of the monks takes a single strand of Adam’s hair. Later they take Helen, and as the bikers sleep, the head Monk, known only as “One” throws a heck of a party. Uh, I mean ritual – which features the sacrifice of a cat, and subsequently Helen doing a naked snake and skull dance near the fire. Great stuff; and one extra star for good looking naked girls! None of this makes sense until the bikers awaken and go inside the temple to retrieve Adam’s old lady. The Monks are each struck down by the bikers, but they touch each biker as they fall with some greasy looking stuff. I suppose this puts some sort of curse on them, but it is Adam and Helen that end up getting hairy! They escape the temple, and head back out into the desert. The next night, the gang camps out, and the usual party ensues with drugs, sex alcohol,

and the insinuation that everyone is having a great time. A really great time until Mouse and Shirley are killed by a couple of werewolves. The group discovers them in the bottom of a ravine and assumes that they had fallen and broken their necks, and then attacked by coyotes or other wild animals. Close, but no cigar! On another campout near an old junkyard, a gang member known as “Movie” is attacked by a fuzzy friend, and thrown into the fire. Little does the gang know the attacks are being carried out by Adam, and Helen! Some of the members come to Tarot to see if he knows what the heck is going on. The gang believes the Monks are attacking them, and the decision is made that they will go back to the temple, and beat up all the Monks. The gang camps out near the temple. While the fire burns, Adam and Helen change into werewolves, and begin attacking the members. The bikers all grab sticks and
fashion makeshift torches with which they attack the werewolves. Fire always seems to make werewolves pissed off. I haven’t figured out why. Anyway, shortly after Helen gets burned up,Adam still smoldering takes off on his motorcycle. The gang follows with torches blazing and eventually he crashes and burns – literally. The gang returns to off the monks, but to strike, the head at them and they all
the temple to finish as each biker tries Monk “One” stares fall under the spell.
The closing credits roll as the bikers ride into the camera, leaving the viewer to think ... Should I sing “Werewolves of One-Done,” or “Hey Hey We’re the Monk- JEEZ.” I’ll give this one 3 out of 5 stars for the reasons mentioned above. I’ll go take a shower now. I guess I’m a “wash and wear-wolf”….. Till next month.

TEST RIDE It’s hard to believe that Daytona Bike week 2014 has come and gone, but it has and I will have fond memories of this year for one special reason. When we left for Daytona, the weather here in North Georgia was rain and cold and the forecast did not get better for the four days that we would be gone. With that in mind, we decided to take the cage (car) and just spend time walking around Daytona visiting vendors and just enjoying our time there. While traveling down I-75 and wishing that we had our bikes, I got a phone call from our publisher, Stuart Fincher, stating that Indian would like to provide me with a bike to ride while I was in Daytona and that in return I would review the bike for the magazine. Needless to say I jumped all over that offer and picked up the phone and called the contact at Indian! I told them that my son, Jon, was with me and he does my photo work for www.northgeorgiamotorcycles.com and wondered if they had a bike that he could ride and review as well. It was a moment of holding my breath waiting for the reply.
Wing. After all, the Gold Wing is a liquid-cooled horizontally opposed six-cylinder and the Indian is an air-cooled, 49-degree V-Twin displacing 111 cubic inches from a 101 mm bore and a 113 mm stroke. While riding the motorcycle, what I found was whenever I needed power, there was plenty to spare. The bike rolled through the power band very easily and rapidly with every twist of the throttle. The only place that I really felt the Gold Wing had the advantage was in first gear at take off, but this may be more of a gear ratio issue. I have been asked if the motor seemed as smooth as the Gold Wings motor and simply put—it should not be, after all it is a V-Twin. The motor was very smooth for a V-Twin with just enough vibration to let you know that were still on a cruiser!
The answer came back that as long as he didn’t mind riding a 2014 Indian Classic, they had a bike for him. Needless to say, he was ecstatic as this is the bike he had been looking at on their website prior to the trip. As a young 26-year old who normally rides a Ninja 650, he didn’t want a full dressed or bagger. They just didn’t fit his profile! As we continued on into Florida, the weather broke and once again proved the weatherman wrong. Upon arriving in Daytona, we went straight to the pickup point and collected our bikes, a 2014 Vintage for me and 2014 Classic for Jon. Needless to say, we were both happy campers as we both had bikes to ride and review and we did not have to ride all the way to Florida in pouring rain. The review that follows in this article is my review of the 2014 Indian Vintage and Jon’s review of the 2014 Indian Classic will follow later. To start off, when we picked up the bikes my first thought was that after having spent the past two years on a Gold Wing nothing could even come close to it in any way. Boy was I surprised! The Indian, to begin with has as its heart a Thunder Stroke 111 cubic inch engine. That translates to 1811 cubic centimeters; putting it in the same power band as the Gold Wing which comes into the picture at 1832 cubic centimeters. My first theory was blown out of the water when I thought the power of the Indian would not come close to the Gold

INDIAN VINTAGE Rider comfort was an miss my Gold Wing, spending a constant a s refreshed as over the
area that I was sure I would but what I found was after six hours in the saddle I was when I first slung my leg bike! We rode the bike through stop and go traffic in downtown Daytona as well as Interstate testing on
The seat is a true leather covered seat that is very comfortable. It beats any cruiser seat that I have spent time in before, including my own cruisers of the past, even with a Saddleman Gel Seat. Not only was it comfortable to sit in, but the fact that its height is only 26 inches made it a perfect height for me, as I only have a 27 inch inseam! With such a low seat height, I was very comfortable every time we came to a stop because I could stand flat footed. On my Goldwing, I must stand 3/4-footed with only my toes and center of my foot touching the ground at a stop. Driver comfort is also included with floor boards as opposed to pegs. The handlebars are pulled back just enough to be very comfortable and include all of the normal controls, in addition to a few extra controls for things like the multi-function electronic readouts found in the speedometer and the standard cruise control. The bike is controlled by a key fob making the bike keyless and it cannot be started unless you are within 30 feet of the bike. ABS; Cast Aluminum Frame with Integrated Air-Box; Cruise Control; Highway Bar; Indian® Script Tank Badge; Keyless Start; Light Bar; Premium Leather Seats; Quick Release Lexan Windshield; Quick Release Vintage Leather Saddle Bags; Vintage Fender Badge.
I-75. We even did our best to find twisty roads in Florida. We did find some curves on this route where I was able to put the bike into some good leans and I was not disappointed.
As I mentioned, the bike has a multi-functional readout speedometer and it includes: Tank mounted electronic speedometer with odometer; dual tripmeters; digital tachometer; ambient air temperature; fuel range; average fuel economy; battery voltage; gear position display; real-time clock; vehicle trouble code readout; heated grip level (if heated grips installed); low engine oil pressure; and 9 LED telltale indicators: cruise control enabled, cruise control set, neutral, high beam, turn signal, ABS, check engine, and MPH or km/h unit designation; Tank mounted electronic fuel gauge with low fuel LED indicator. Indian Motorcycle® backs every new Indian Motorcycle with 5 years of coverage that includes both a 1-year limited warranty and an extended service contract Subject to $50 deductible, no mileage limitation. My final conclusion is that the bike was a real joy to ride and with a starting price of $20,999.00 and a smooth ride with its super sweet suspension, I think the Gold Wing has some competition and this is not even their top of the line Chieftain, which I have been told puts the vintage into a second class category. I can’t wait to ride the new Chieftain! I might have to take a closer look at Indian when it comes time to trade! Until our next review. Ride Safe & Ride Often, Eric Wieberg

Fourth Annual Inglett & Stubbs Charity Ride To Remember
On a sunny Saturday morning in late June, bikers turned out to ride in the fourth annual Inglett & Stubbs Charity Ride to benefit the Alzheimer’s Association. The ride began at Harley-Davidson of Atlanta’s outdoor pavilion, where participants gathered for registration, while being treated to coffee and biscuits. After a few minutes, it was time for kick stands up; bikers and riders alike were saddled on their motorcycles and ready for the run.
The ride lasted through the afternoon, with stops at Bikers Gone Wild in Dallas, Tom’s Place in Cartersville, and Hellbender Harley-Davidson in Marietta. After an enjoyable and thankfully dry ride, everyone arrived back at Paddy’s Irish Pub in Kennesaw for some great food, fun, and fellowship. Participants were also treated to an auction, live music from Leadfoot, and prizes for the top three poker hands. A prize was also given to the biker who traveled the farthest; he came all the way from Tampa, Florida! The Ride To Remember will return next year for its fifth annual event, so be sure to come out and show your support for this great cause!

On June 14, dozens of bikers, including some survivors of cervical cancer and their families, turned out for the third annual Save the Cooch Poker Run. This annual ride is held each summer to benefit the West Atlanta Chapter and the National Cervical Cancer Coalition to raise awareness about cervical cancer, which is the second leading type of cancer in women. This event was headed up by Bylinda Foster (she is the one in the famous teal tutu), along with her awesome Save the Cooch team, Jessica Ballentine, Jennifer Parton, and Rina Puri. The Save the Cooch Poker Run also had a lot of wonderful volunteers who helped make this event a success. This year’s poker run began at Harley-Davidson of Atlanta, Irish Gone Wild in Dallas, owned and the ride as well. LoLo is a huge
B3 Bar and Grill in Austell, with stops at Bred Pub, and Stix Bar and Grill. Bikers operated by Lori (“LoLo”), was a stop on supporter of the National Cervical Cancer
Coalition and the West Atlanta Chapter and has her own fundraising events throughout the year as well. After returning from the run, participants enjoyed music by J.B. Walker & The Cheap Whiskey Band, a bike show, raffles, a 50/50 drawing, and goody bags filled with prizes and giveaways. Vendors were also on site to show support for the event, offering various biker friendly goods and services. Of all the local chapters, the West Atlanta Chapter is the first and only to put on this type of event, which so far has been a huge success and promises to be even bigger next year! According to Bylinda, over $5,000 was raised! Come on out next summer for this event, and show your support. Also look for other Save the Cooch events during the year, and make sure to attend. We will see you there!

The Quandary of a Biker
The quandary of a biker, outdoorsman and a photographer is to find that fine line between riding and experiencing the peacefulness of the outdoors. Every time I go to the Smokies I have the same dilemma, whether to ride my bike or take the Trailblazer. It’s a matter of peaceful quiet or riding mountain roads looking for those blissful moments. It’s a matter of keeping my photography gear easily accessible or having to take the bungee cords off the tripod and pulling my securely stored camera and lenses out of my saddle bags. It’s a matter of the rumble of my Road King’s engine that I love so much or the shot of the mother bear with cubs that may be frightened off by that same sound. The Smokies are so many things to me, and I find myself always at odds on which transportation mode to take when I visit.
Cades Cove in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park is one of my favorite places in the world, second only to Lamar Valley in Yellowstone National Park. The peace I feel every time I visit is similar to what I feel when riding most country roads, except, like I mentioned I’m presented with a dilemma whenever I plan each trip, which is often. And much of that has to do with my photography and also others who come to the Smokies to find peace. Obviously, the Trailblazer makes it easier to store my photography gear and to get to it quickly whenever a wildlife photo opportunity presents itself. But riding my Road King through this valley tucked away deep inside the Smokies is one of my favorite things to do in the world.
BTR 6 | BORNTORIDE.COM
Another thing that weighs on my mind is the other visitors to the valley. Now speaking for myself, I love the low rumble of my Road King as I slowly cruise this 11 mile paved loop road with several gravel spurs, but others may not have the same feelings. Does my bike take away from the peacefulness some are searching for when they visit Cades Cove? I’m sure it does to some. Now of course, I’m not racing my engine and drawing out backfires like I may do going down the road at some bike rally, but it’s not the same sound that a muffled down cage makes when it’s coasting through the valley road. The only answer I’ve been able to come up with is … well no answer works. Sometimes I cage it and sometimes I ride. The only thing that could be close to an answer is that when I’m in the Smokies riding my bike I never regret it, but when I’m there in the Trailblazer I sometimes regret it. It’s not all of the Smokies that I have this problem, it’s only when I visit Cades Cove. Few things are better than riding through the Smokies on my Road King, and with the Blue Ridge Parkway right there it can never be a bad idea to be on a motorcycle. But The Cove is different, especially to me. I’ve spent so many hours there over the last several decades; riding it, hiking it, sleeping in it, taking pictures of it. It’s become part of who I am and what I want to be. But because of what it does for me I don’t want to take away from what it does for others. More than likely, many people don’t think of others when they’re there.
That is easy to see whenever there is a “bear jam” and people stop in the middle-of-the-road if there is a bear sighting, making the line of traffic behind come to a silent halt. But I like to think of others the way I would like for them to think of me. I like to think of myself as not living in my own little world. So I guess I will continue having this dilemma for years to come. I guess the only positive I can pull from this is that at least I have a dilemma like this … whether to ride or not. Most people don’t have this problem and like we riders know, it’s too bad for them. Because we all know, once you’ve ridden you’ll always want to ride. Thus ends this month’s ramble. As always … feel free to bitch me out on our Facebook page if you disagree. www.facebook.com/BornToRideGeorgia Eric Albright

THE SLOWPOKE LAW AMENDMENT: WHAT EVERY GEORGIA DRIVER NEEDS TO KNOW ABOUT THIS NEW LAW Many of us, if not all of us, have had this debate at one time or another. If you are operating a vehicle at the speed limit in the left hand “fast lane,” also known as the high speed or passing lane, and someone comes up behind you, are you required to move over into the right hand lane and let them pass? Should you move into the right lane and let them pass? The fast lane is defined as the most left-hand lane on a road which has two or more lanes traveling in the same direction, which would generally be seen on an interstate or four-lane highway. A high occupancy vehicle lane (HOV) is excluded from this definition, which when present, if often the far left-hand lane. The newly amended Statute appears to recognize this distinction as well. In my discussions with drivers through the years, it appears that people have varying opinions on how traffic should flow in the fast lane. For example, according to my grandmother, if you are driving the speed limit in the left fast lane, you aren’t required to move into the right hand lane. Even with an angry motorist who wants to move past you on your bumper, and 20 other angry motorists behind them, you are acting within the law. Yes, according to my grandmother, even if you are causing a traffic jam, there is no need to move into the right lane. My grandmother and I never agreed on that point. However, technically and legally at that time, she was correct. According to O.C.G.A. § 40-6184 as it existed prior to July 1, 2014, “on roads, streets, or highways with two or more lanes allowing for movement in the same direction, no person shall continue to operate a motor vehicle in the most left-hand lane at less than the maximum lawful speed limit once such person knows or should reasonably know that he is being overtaken in such a lane from the rear by a motor vehicle traveling at a higher rate of speed, except when such motor vehicle is preparing for a left turn.” So my grandmother was correct in the eyes of the law; if the speed limit was 55 miles per hour, and she was traveling 56 miles per hour, she could lawfully cruise in the fast lane all day long. And she did, even if she was on Interstate 75. I’m sure she has been the victim of many instances of road rage and finger gestures, even if she didn’t notice at the time. However, as you read this article, an amendment to the law regarding fast lane driving will have taken effect. On July 1, 2014, a new law became effective which serves to amend certain portions of O.C.G.A. § 40-6-184. Under the newly amended Statute, my grandmother, while driving the speed limit in the left lane and impeding the flow of faster traffic approaching from behind, would likely be pulled over by a police officer and ticketed for a violation of the newly amended “Slowpoke Law.” This is because the speed limit, and the speed of your vehicle in relation thereto, are no longer relevant to driving in the fast lane. In other words, if you are driving 90 miles per hour in the fast lane, and another motorist approaches from behind at a higher rate of speed, failure to move into the right lane constitutes a violation of the new law. That’s right, even if you are driving 90 miles per hour in the fast lane, you may be a “slow poke.” To that end, the Statute as amended provides a replacement for the language above, and specifically states that “no person shall continue to operate a motor vehicle in the passing lane

once such person knows or should reasonably know that he or she is being overtaken in such lane from the rear by a motor vehicle traveling at a higher rate of speed.” So, there you have it. You are a “slow poke” if someone approaches you from behind at a higher rate of speed, even if you are traveling well above the speed limit. As with any law, of course, there are exceptions that attempt to deal with circumstances where not following the newly amended law would be legally excusable. These exceptions will surely seem ambiguous at times, and be interpreted differently from one motorist to another. For example, the above newly amended portion of the law shall not apply “when traffic conditions or congestion make it necessary to drive in the passing lane, when inclement weather, obstructions, or hazards make it necessary to drive in the passing lane, when compliance with a law of this state or with an official traffic control device makes it necessary to drive in the passing lane, when a vehicle must be driven in the passing lane to exit or turn left, on toll highways when necessary to pay a toll or use a pass, to authorized emergency vehicles engaged in official duties, or to vehicles engaged in highway maintenance and construction operations.” Nonetheless, beware. Any law, including this one, will be subject to interpretation by those who seek to enforce the law and those who are bound by the same law. What constitutes being approached from behind by a vehicle traveling at a higher rate of speed? How closely must they be to your vehicle to put you on notice that you should move over? What if another vehicle passes you on the right side but never approaches from the rear? Who decides when weather constitutes an exception to the law? What constitutes traffic congestion or traffic conditions? And if a faster vehicle is behind you, what distance can you travel in the passing lane prior to executing a left turn? I can see a lot of arguments and differences in opinion, however, that won’t stop a police officer from pulling you over and issuing you a Uniform Traffic Citation. I recently spoke with Kenny Dodd, Chief of the Polk County Police Department, regarding the newly amended Statute. According to Chief Dodd, he has instructed his police officers to consider issuing warnings during the month of July, due to the newness of the law. After July, however, Citations will be issued. Not being aware of the new law, or “ignorance of the law,” will be no excuse. So, when in doubt, and when not in doubt, move into the right lane and let the faster vehicle through. Even if you’re like my grandmother and think that going above the speed limit entitles you to cruise in the left lane, there is always someone faster who will want to pass you. Let them. Not only is it now the law, it will be safer for everyone. For any of you reading my article, feel free to call me with any questions you have regarding this or any other law in effect in Georgia. Not only do I represent people all over Georgia who have been in motorcycle and auto accidents, I also practice criminal law as a defense attorney, and serve as a Prosecutor in Municipal Court. I’m sure at one time or another I will be prosecuting or defending someone accused of being a “slow poke.” Ride safe everyone, and remember to look twice and save a life. Motorcycles are everywhere.

DESTINATIONS DESTINATION HELEN August 14-17, 2014
This ride will begin at BigUn’s BBQ, 362 Carns Mill Rd, Talking Rock, Georgia 30175. You will ride through Blairsville and on into Hiawassee, home of Lake Chatgue. You will continue north of Hiawassee where we will pick up Highway 197. While we are on Highway 197, you will come to Moccasin Creek State Park on the banks of Lake Burton. Lake Burton, in my opinion is probably one of the most beautiful lakes that we have in the state. It is one of those lakes that are nestled in the mountain valleys surrounded by a variety of pine trees and assorted hardwoods. This makes the lake an exceptionally beautiful spot no matter what the season is. The lake is just one of those picture perfect spots that could be in the mountains of Colorado, the Adirondack Mountains of Upstate New York or the Appalachians of Virginia and West Virginia! Lake Burton is a 2,775 acre reservoir with 62 miles of shoreline located in the northeastern corner of Georgia in Rabun County. It is the first lake in a six-lake series called the Tallulah River Watershed that follows the original course of the Tallulah River. The chain begins with Lake Burton as the northernmost lake followed by Lake Seed, Lake Rabun, Lake Tallulah Falls, Lake Tugalo, and Lake Yonah. The lakes are owned and operated by the Georgia Power Company to generate hydroelectric energy for Georgia’s largest city, Atlanta. At one time these lakes were the largest producers of electricity in the state of Georgia. At present the lakes provide power only during periods of peak electricity consumption. The Lake Burton Fish Hatchery and Moccasin Creek State Park are located on the lake’s west side. The lake is home to several species of fish, including spotted bass, largemouth bass, white bass, black crappie, bluegill, redear sunfish, white catfish, walleye, brown trout, rainbow trout, and yellow perch.

From Lake Burton, you will continue on into Helen by way of Highway 356 and pass Unicoi State Park. Helen has long been a favorite place for my wife and me to visit. We used to travel to Helen quite frequently when we lived in Toccoa, Georgia. That was 30 some years ago and although the buildings still look the same, the theme of shops has changed from a time when almost all shops were shops that sported craftsman on the spot making things like dulcimers by hand and hand woven baskets, woodworkers, glass blowers and artists painting live. Helen has changed and although it still has all the little shops, it seems that most all of the shops now are little souvenir shops that sport commercially made products. One thing that Helen apparently has become is the mountain home to bikers! There are several restaurants and bars that cater to the bikers every weekend and of course Chattahoochee Biker Gear, owned and operated by Pat Turner and her daughter Carrie. Our ride will conclude here and you will have plenty of time left to explore the events of Destination Helen. Helen was formerly a logging town that was in decline, the city resurrected itself by becoming a replica of a Bavarian alpine town, in the Appalachians instead of the Alps. This design is mandated through zoning first adopted in 1969, so that the classic south-German style is present on every building, even the small number of national franchisees present (such as Huddle House and Wendy’s). Because of this, tourism is the main industry in Helen, catering mostly to weekend visitors from the Atlanta area and also, motorcyclists, who enjoy riding the beautiful roads of Helen and its surrounding areas during all seasons. Helen is extremely crowded in late October, when autumn leaves typically peak. Continued on Pg. 33

Voices of Teal GEORGIA CANCER ORGANIZATION TO HOLD EVENTS FOR GYNECOLOGICAL CANCER AWARENESS, CARE It’s a petrifying feeling to know something is terribly wrong with your body, but you don’t have the financial resources to seek medical help.
smears - the only way to detect and prevent cervical cancer - VOT will host two charity events: Quarters for Cooters as well as the first annual Bikers for Beavers Poker Run.
However, Voices of Teal, a cervical cancer/ HPV awareness and support non-profit organization, is determined to help low income and uninsured women receive the healthcare they need to prevent or treat gynecological cancers. As teal is the color for gynecological cancer awareness, VOT seeks to educate both men and women on the issues of cervical cancer, caused by human papillomavirus, which both genders carry.
Quarters for Cooters, which will run from 2 p.m. on August 23 to 2 a.m. on August 24, will take place at the Lil’ Whisper Whiskey Bar & Grill located at 6889 Highway 92 in Woodstock. The event will have live music, raffles, prizes and much more.
Though VOT began as just a cervical cancer awareness non-profit, it has since branched out and specializes in all types of gynecological cancers, including ovarian, uterine, vulvar, vaginal, and fallopian cancers. VOT also provides support for those who have been diagnosed or are undergoing treatment, as well as providing support for family, friends and caregivers. Ashley Altman, founder and chief executive officer of VOT, was diagnosed with cervical cancer five years ago. “I myself was diagnosed at 25 with squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix,” Altman explained. “I was lucky to have had it detected in the early stages, but because my treatments have not been successful, I still live with this disease today. I searched long and far, when I was diagnosed, in the hopes of some answers or help.” But Altman learned quickly that for women without health insurance, and also for those who are unemployed or have low incomes, help for their cancer treatments is in sight, yet out of reach. So with the mission to raise money to host events at local health clinics to provide women with free or reduced Pap

Event-goers will also have the opportunity to pre-register for the Bikers for Beavers Poker Run which is on September 14 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Poker Run will start at Hooters in Roswell and end at Killer Creek Harley-Davidson in Roswell. Pre-registration is $20 per bike and $5 for the rider. For those registering the day of the event, it’s $25 per bike and $5 for the rider. Each bike will receive one ‘Bikers for Beavers’ t-shirt.The Bikers for Beavers Poker Run will honor two fallen gynecological cancer warriors: Amie Moore of Jasper and Holly Moore of Rome. Though the two were not related, both Teal Angels passed away in late 2013, within weeks of each other. Holly Moore passed away from cervical cancer and Amie Moore battled ovarian cancer, a silent killer, as there are usually no symptoms and the disease is not as easily detected as cervical cancer. One of the major challenges for VOT, Altman said, is the taboo nature of the topic. “Obviously dealing with cervical cancer, it’s an STD-related disease,” Altman explained. “It’s taboo and it’s really hard to get people on board with you. You can talk breast cancer awareness all day and you have people lining up, but when you talk about something below the belt, it’s just not as easy. So it’s been tough, trying to get the word out and getting people drawn to you like moths.” But Altman said cervical cancer, which is entirely preventable given the right healthcare, safe
sex practices and proper education, is stealthy when it comes to its carriers and its symptoms. “What people don’t realize is 8 in 10 people carry HPV; that’s 80 percent of the population,” Altman said. “HPV can lead to cervical cancer and men are also carriers, but there are no medical tests for males. However, men can get penile cancer from HPV. They don’t realize that skin-to-skin contact is how people are infected with HPV. They don’t realize even if you use a condom, it doesn’t cover up everything. While condoms are the best method to prevention, there are still risks of being infected with HPV.” According to the national cancer institute, there will be an estimated 12,360 new cases of cervical cancer this year in the U.S., 4,020 of which will result in death.
Holly Moore’s sister, Haley Copeland, said Moore fought from her moment of diagnosis to the time of her death to raise awareness for cervical cancer. Moore also worked closely with Altman for the cause during her life. “She chose to live with cancer and not to die with it,” said Copeland. “She chose to celebrate her life no matter what she was faced with. Through her illness, she chose to take the opportunity to tell others this is out there, this is a prevalent cancer and it needs to be brought out.” For more information about the Quarters for Cooters and the Bikers for Beavers Poker Run events, visit www.voicesofteal.com, the organization’s Facebook page, or contact Altman at 678-757-4364. It also hosts its own Oktoberfest during September, October and November. There are many events and festivals throughout the year. One of the most well-known is the annual hot-air balloon race, which is held the first weekend in June each year. The main road through town is north/south Georgia 75. A parallel route to the west is labeled Georgia 75 Alternate to identify it as a bypass route around the town, and its massive traffic jams in the fall and on some other weekends. Unicoi State Park and Lodge, spanning 1,050 acres, is located immediately northeast of Helen on Georgia 356. Unicoi State Park encompasses Unicoi Lake, a 53-acre freshwater lake that offers numerous outdoor activities for all seasons. Among them are a swimming beach, trout streams, wheelchair-accessible fishing docks, seasonal canoe, kayak and paddle boat rentals, seven picnic shelters complete
with charcoal grills, three playgrounds for children, many spots for birding, 7.5 miles of hiking within the park (with adjacent trails in the Chattahoochee National Forest), 8 miles of mountain biking trails within the park, and plenty of places to enjoy the natural beauty of the lake and park. Unicoi State Park also offers lodging in several forms. The Lodge at Unicoi State Parks boasts 100 modern guest rooms with wireless internet, a conference center, a restaurant featuring a nightly mountain trout buffet (a local favorite), a lodge gift shop featuring quilts and other locally-made crafts, four lit tennis courts. Other lodging at the park includes 30 cottages (some are dog-friendly), 82 Tent/Trailer/RV Campsites, 33 Walk-In Campsites, and 16 “Squirrel’s Nest” Camping Shelters (covered shelters with a nearby bathhouse, grills, picnic tables and fire pit). COUNTING CARS WITH
DANNY “THE COUNT” KOKER Fix Em, Flip Em, and Sometimes Keep Em!
Vegas is a gambling town, most people bet with chips, Danny “The Count” Koker bets with rides, and he’s always in all the way with his all-star team. They fix em, flip em, and sometimes keep em. It’s high stakes and can’t afford to lose, and we were fortunate to catch up with Danny and his partner Kevin at the BTR Jam, and this is what they had to say. …
Ron: This is the History Channel’s number one show! I’m with Kevin and Danny from Counting Cars, Count’s Kustoms. You guys are killing it, brother! Danny: Thank you so much, man! We appreciate you having us down here at this magnificent rally, man! We’re here to have a really good time! This is going to be cool!
Ron: You know motorcycles, man! Tell me about your shop in Vegas.
“

”
Danny: Count’s Kustoms has been a licensed shop for a little over 15 years now. We are also a licensed manufacturer of custom motorcycles. We build choppers from the ground up. We build all kinds of bikes. My personal favorites are the long bikes. I’m really into the rigid, down to the ground bikes. I’m hooked on Sugar Bear springers. My daily rider is 32” over stock, narrow springer from Sugar Bear. It’s over 10 ½’ long. It’s all about the bikes, man. Ron: People got to see your debut on Pawn Stars show! How cool is that they look to you as an expert on what’s right and what they should buy? That’s pretty heavy duty. Danny: It’s really cool to be able to do that. The Harrison’s are wonderful people. Rick and I go way back. So when Rick called me to be an expert on his show, it was an honor to be asked to do that. And you’re right. It’s a big responsibility because you have to tell people that it’s not quite worth what they think it’s worth. I hate to burst people’s bubble. But then on the flip side, when somebody comes

Danny: Yup!
Ron: Now your motivation to somebody sitting on the couch right now; they see this beater car down the street that they are thinking about buying. What would you tell someone to do?
in and they are only expecting a small amount, you get to tell them they have a gem here and it’s worth this amount of money instead. But the responsibility to Rick and the Harrison Family to give them good advice to “buy this” or “don’t buy this” is important. I’m honored to do that for them. Ron: When you see a car, how do you know “That’s the car”?
Danny: They speak to you. They speak to me. You got to feel it in your soul. You know what I’m saying? You have to examine a vehicle to make sure it’s, in fact, a solid, straight car— that it’s not buttered up to make it look good and have it fall apart on you. There are certain things you check to make sure it’s a solid, real car. After that, you listen to them and they talk to you!
Kevin: I get an extreme headache. When I get a headache, I know he’s about to buy it.
Ron: (Looking at Kevin) People tell me you’re the brains behind this. Is this true
Kevin: Well … let’s just say that I try to keep this man (Danny) in line. It’s tough. He’s a fullfledged car nut. I have to show him what’s real and what isn’t—and also trying to keep this a business. It’s not a hobby shop. With a hobby shop, we won’t be in business very long. We do it right, but it is a struggle every day for me.
Danny: My advice would be: “Do it because you love it.” There are people that decide they want to get into automotive restoration or customizing/modifying cars and they think they are going to make a bunch of money as a business. Let me tell you, it’s tough to make any money in custom cars and restoration. Do it because you are passionate about it. Take a vehicle that you are passionate about, take your time, don’t be in a hurry, and build that vehicle the way you want to because you love it. Don’t go into it thinking you’re going to be making money on it. If you do that on the flip side, that’s just bonus points! Do it because you love it! Ron: What’s in the future for Counting Cars? You’ve got to be having some cool stuff coming up? Danny: We are right in the middle of shooting Season three right now. We got to fly in this weekend and spend time with you, which is awesome; we’re flying right back tomorrow because we have a whole bunch of work to do. Season three you’ll be seeing some very cool things. There will be no disappointments. We’ll be turning it up a notch.
Kevin: And if you grew up in the ’70s, you’re really going to appreciate it! This man (pointing to Danny) lives in the ’70s. Ron: Retro, man! Retro! Kevin, Danny is a rock star too! What about the band?
Count’s 77 formerly Zito77 consists of Danny
Ron: Danny that’s really cool man. You jammed today with Molly Hatchet on stage, how was that? Danny: I love those guys! Anytime I can get on stage and jam in front of fans who love music as much as I do, it’s great! What about the flag salute on stage Ron? The salute to the troops was totally awesome!
Ron: When we come out to Vegas, can we look you up and stop at the shop and do a profile on you?
Danny: Please do! Please do! You come on out to Vegas because Count’s Kustoms is open seven days a week. So anyone can come on out, do a tour, and check out the joint. But you guys (Born To Ride) can come on out look at some stuff and check out some cars.
Ron: Awesome, guys! Thank you so much! Keep up the great work because viewers and connoisseurs really appreciate your passion for cars and motorcycles. And your deference to the men and women who serve our Country is commendable and we at Born To Ride salute you too!
History Channel Revs up for More Counting Cars
Ron: How is it that he walks everywhere now and is one of the most recognizable guys at any airport? He’s almost like Elvis. Is he not recognizable or what?
Kevin: Shhh!! You can’t say that, man! Somebody will think he’s a diva. You can’t do that! (Laughing) But really, he is very popular and his is for real. He has no acting skills whatsoever. What you see is what you get. And listen, we’re blessed by God, we believe in God and have a big faith that we follow. And the other thing is that we treat people the way we want to be treated. We are also big supporters of the military. We give to charities and benefits and we give back. We do all the right things. You can’t out-give God. That’s what we do.
Zito and Curtis’ lead guitar styles complement each other while having a mesmerizing effect on the audience. Pauly D’s unique style brings a high-energy persona to the band. Barnes’ funky, soulful bass playing holds down the foundation of the band. The band’s front man and lead vocalist is Danny. The entire band has been featured on Counting Cars and can be seen on History Channel’s exclusive web series Counting Cars After Hours. This killer combination seals the solid backbone of the band and gives them a nostalgic ‘70s vibe. They have a strong arsenal of originals and obscure ‘70s cover songs. Count’s 77 have recently been signed to Schrapnel Records and will be recording their new record at Count’s Desert Moon Productions. Look for an exciting tour coming soon!
“The Count” Koker on lead vocals, John Zito on lead guitar, harmonica and vocals, Stoney Curtis on lead guitar and vocals, Barry Barnes on bass and vocals and Paul DiSibio on drums. John Zito’s slide and dobro guitars give the band its unique sound, with the virtuosity of Jimi Hendrix and the soul of Johnny Winter.
Danny and the crew from Count’s Kustoms, his Vegas based auto repair business, are behind the wheel again for a new season of Counting Cars. The heat is on as the boys buy, trick out, and re-sell classic cars, bikes, and more. Danny is obsessed so the more rides he buys the faster he has to move to stay in business. Every episode features stories behind vintage vehicles, striking before and after transformations, and Danny’s relentless compulsion to find and flip the greatest rides of all time at any cost. Don’t miss season three of Counting Cars, which debuted Tuesday, July 15 at 9 p.m. EST on the History Channel. You can catch up on season three by viewing Counting Cars After Hours Web Series at www.history.com/shows/counting-cars.

Craven Moorehead with barnyard animals, riding a moped to work, wearing a skirt, not graduating kindergarten, and a host of other insults. He continues telling me how great the product is. It’s amazing how some people are truly dedicated to their menial task jobs! Undaunted, he continues telling me how “IF I act NOW” the company will include a set of complimentary steak knives and a life insurance policy for my pets. Well, needless to say I was sold. So after asking him to hold on for a second, while I discuss the offer with my butler and body guards, I return to the phone with my best Russian accent and tell him “You do realize that you are putting your product into a 14-room mansion on Bayshore Boulevard Right?”… After a short pause the guy started talking about additional charges for additional coverage but I say “??????? ???????” which is roughly “hold the phone. …” After a few seconds I come back with my classic ghetto voice and advise him “Yo dis beddah be right brudda cause I’m in charge of dis dudes security an you don’t want me bustin up yo grill!”… They say a sucker is born every minute, so in order to secure a sale, he continues on asking for a credit card number, name, and address so the equipment can be installed the following Monday. I returned to the phone with a phony credit card number, a phony address on Bayshore and the name F. Artblossom. This dude’s supervisor continues to call the radio station to this day. I suspect that he lost his job when the authorities were called to someone’s home to investigate ‘workers’ wiring up some un-authorized gizmos, and ruining some pretty expensive stone masonry and landscape plants. The radio station continues to disavow any knowledge of the incident. However, we were able to transfer the ‘pet life insurance policy’ to Spyke and Mike. Spyke tells me that Mike will be eliminated soon so he can collect on that policy and enjoy the rest of his life in a mansion somewhere near the bay. Not too sure where that is, but it’s really none of my business. … It’s time for fun in the sun, so I hope to see all of you out there on the highway or at some upcoming events. Until next month— “Speed Safely”
SPRING IS IN THE AIR The fart blossoms are in bloom!
It’s that time of year again. Everyone is waiting around for their tax return so that the mound of un-paid bills lovingly ignored can be partially eliminated, but the dreams of some chrome plated doo-dads will probably take priority. A simple fact of life is that our desires usually trump our responsibilities, so do what makes you happy—not the other guy. Owing money to someone or some entity is a guarantee that everyone has to live with. I have written about it in story after story here in this magazine and on many other internet based forums. I’ve reeled on and on about the government, poverty, and the current downturn affecting the economy. Nobody wants to be reminded or bothered with the obvious so in this particular installment, I will do my best to exclude my negative views on our current situation even though some of you readers out there have commented at the hilarity of my opinions. That’s what I’m here for—to provide entertainment and education to
those that will listen. My audience is vast, but my creative ability is technically limited to the opinions of a run of the mill redneck biker trailer-trash degenerate journalist guy that just likes to share stories of life in the poor lane. I guess some of you can relate because you continue to read my diatribes and often relate your likes or dislikes regarding the content. The phone rings. On the other end is a slick sounding scammer trying to sell me some ‘High-Tech’ alarm system that comes with a smart-phone interface that allows me to talk to the burglar over a wireless speaker/video thingy reminiscent of the holographic communicators from Star Trek. Too bad this turd didn’t know he was calling the studio line at the radio station! Yeah, some of you know that I do a radio show a few nights a week, and I even do a Born To Ride segment on Friday’s, as advertised at Born To Ride dot com. So anyhow, as the call goes on and on, I continue to bash this guy about his marriage to his sister, sex

Heaven’s Saints I would like to give a “shout out” to Jesus for protecting my wife, Lisa. It pays to listen to the inner voice of the Holy Spirit. Here’s the story as she told it to me:
“I wanted to tell you how the Holy Spirit saved me from an accident this morning. I always move to the passing lane after I get onto Ronald Reagan Parkway to make it easier for others to enter. A motorcyclist was in the lane and kindly gave me space to enter. When I started to move over into the lane, the Holy Spirit spoke and told me to stay put. Being protective of motorcycles, I thought it was to protect BTR 48 | BORNTORIDE.COM
So Many People Want to Hear From God
him. Ten seconds later, I heard screeching brakes and loud crashes, and there were cars swerving into my lane. I went into the grass and was not hit and quickly looked to see and make sure the biker was okay. He was! Just thankful that I knew beyond the shadow of a doubt that if I had not listened to the Holy Spirit my day would have gone very differently. So many people want to hear from God, but they are expecting angels to appear and a loud booming voice. It’s not like that at all. It is a thought or an idea that just appears and resonates with you as being right. You may not completely understand
it at the time, but in your heart there is peace. We need to learn to hear and obey these thoughts.”
This is just another incident in the life of Spirit-Led believers who will tune in to the voice and promptings of the Holy Spirit. He is in us to lead and guide us through ALL circumstances. PTL Byron “HogDoc” Loyd
