Are you looking for relief from the hot, sticky heat? Would you like to ride through stunningly, beautiful scenery? Are you tired of dangerous bumper-to-bumper traffic? Well we have the answers for you! Escape to the beautiful northeast Georgia mountains and north Georgia’s best motorcycle resort, the Copperhead Lodge in beautiful Blairsville, Georgia! It’s 47 acres of biker heaven with special amenities geared to bikers who want the best in accommodations, food, entertainment, and of course, some of the best motorcycling roads in the country. Smooth blacktop, minimal traffic, challenging curves, valleys, and twisties that seem to be made especially for adventuresome riders. Waterfalls, lakes, mountain streams, quaint villages and towns it’s all here. The central headquarters of this motorcycle mecca is the Copperhead Lodge! Beautiful cabins and rooms are just the beginning of this delightful stay with owners Michelle and Anthony—making sure that your stay is something you will never forget and guaranteeing that you’ll
come back time after time again. So, stay tuned. We’re headed for the mountains as we join the winners of Born To Ride’s and the Copperhead Lodge’s Weekend Getaway Contest. Hey, this is Debbie with Born To Ride TV and we are here at the Copperhead Lodge in Blairsville, Georgia. This is Michelle Evans, the owner of Copperhead Lodge. I’m going to coin you on this trip—The Biker Den Mother! You’re looking out and taking care of everybody. So Michelle, just give us the geographic location of Copperhead Lodge. Where are you located? “We are about an hour and a half north of Atlanta, Georgia, tucked in the very northeast corner. In 25 miles you can be either in Tennessee or North Carolina.” “Tell us about the acreage, the property here at Copperhead Lodge.” “We’ve got 47 acres total. The Lodge is located in the center of the resort. We have 20 acres on the front side of the resort and 27 acres in the back where the creek is. It’s a bit more private and woodsy set up. We have 28 cabins on the property right now. When we’re done,

we’ll have 52.” “So you’ve got the cabin atmosphere, the lodge atmosphere, the swimming pool, the amphitheater; you’ve got everything! What we’ve really been impressed with is the catering you do for the biker.” “Absolutely! This place was built with all of that in mind. That was the vision. We’re the second owners. We have a vision where motorcycling enthusiasts can come but also people who are not on bikes. We have a great mix of folks here. We do cater to the bikers. You will see that when you walk in; a big rock fireplace with a motorcycle set inside of it. That really sets the true vision. There are a ton of amenities that the bikers love. For example, last night we had a great band, we have guided rides all week long that our local folks do for us. It’s just motorcycle euphoria here!” “You contacted Born To Ride about five months ago and said, ‘Hey! Let’s have a big Born To Ride Weekend! I’m willing to do a giveaway to some of your readers and viewers.’ So, we did that and I’m telling you, they love it!”

“Everyone who I talked to that came up on the weekend thoroughly enjoyed it. Some of them had never heard of this area. Many of them rode the guided rides with me on Friday. They couldn’t believe the natural beauty and the sites that we saw. I really think that this is a great thing. Not only for the Copperhead Lodge but for Born To Ride and our relationship that has flourished over the last year, and hopefully for all those folks who are a part of the Copperhead family.” “I want to talk about the cabins in just a moment, but you started to get right into the guided rides. This is the girl who leads the guided rides. You ride in and you meet Michelle. She gets you into your cabin, the next day she gets up and on her bike— taking you on these guided rides.” “I enjoy the riding part of what we do! We also do a lot of custom maps for folks. When they come up here, we want them to see what this area has to offer. Quite frankly, we’ve had people from all over the country and from other countries that come here. And when I say there isn’t a bad road here, I’m not kidding! It gives me
a lot of pride to take folks out and show them around. I’m always going to take them to the prettiest scenic overlook, the best place for lunch, the best place to take a picture, make sure they get their picture under the waterfalls … all the things we miss when we punch in the GPS and stay on the roads that are less traveled.” “I have to comment on the roads. Not one pot hole—not one! The roads are perfect, smooth roads where the signs are very well marked, too.” “I do think this area recognizes the importance that the motor-tourist is to the value of our economy. And so for that reason I think they really do invest in that. For example, Wolf Pen Gap is better than The Dragon as far as technically for a road … is under construction and being repaved right now. That’s going to be a great, new improvement to the Gauntlet. That’s the ride we promote. So, they are looking out for us with the safety of the roads for our motor-tourists. That’s very important for us. We see that as a great thing for us and our future to continue to build.” “Stuart! Where are you taking us today?
(Stuart Fincher, Born To Ride Magazine Georgia Publisher and Tour Guide.) “The ride today is based on The Gauntlet at Copperhead Lodge. We are now on the Richard Russell scenic highway, one of the most beautiful views in Georgia. This is where we grew up and we love it! You can be up here for four days and never ride the same road. It’s phenomenal. If you like the mountains, love beautiful scenery, a lot of it is National Forest so you won’t see a lot of stores and houses. It’s just wide open, man! The Dragon’s Tail has nothing on what northeast Georgia has. We’re proud of where we live. We tried to keep it a secret all these years, but it’s time to let it out!” “Michelle actually took a group out today. We passed her on our way in this morning. We’ll be heading back in to the lodge where we’ll be meeting up with them.” “What’s going on this weekend?” “They have live music, they did a promotional give-away in Florida and all of the winners are up here this weekend where we’re trying to expose them to the beautiful mountains Georgia has to offer.”

Debbie: “We’re talking about the roads, the good quality of the roads, and the scenery. You’re not just a lodge owner that hands over a map and says, ‘Here, explore our area.’ You’re like, ‘Meet me in the lobby at 9:00! We’re going!’ Tell me what some of your favorite rides are. Michelle: “There’s a lot of them! Like I’ve mentioned before, there’s not a bad road in this area. We provide a ride called The Gauntlet. It’s a 133 miles in the north mountains of Georgia. Wolf Pen Gap is a 12-mile road with tons of switchbacks and curves. It comes out at Lake Winfield. A great place to stop and take photos. Then there is the Richard B. Russell Scenic Highway. It was repaved BTR 12 | BORNTORIDE.COM
last year. It’s a beautiful beautiful road that will take you over to Helen, Georgia. Pick a road. Go see them. It’s awesome!” Debbie: “Let’s talk about the cabins. Oh, the cabins are gorgeous! Two-bedroom cabin we’re staying in right now has fresh, white linens! It’s just a homey place with nice flower arrangements and everything. What were you thinking about with the cabin design and the cabin concept? Michelle: “When we bought the Lodge, my whole idea is that there were so many women and motorcycling now. Whether the guys like it or not, or if the ladies ride their own or not, when we go on vacation, we’re usually making the decision as to where we’re going to stay. True? I
think Ron would even get in on that one! “So when we got this place that was part of my entire vision. I want to go to a place that is comfortable and clean and decorated nicely. It can still be a biker hangout but it can still be clean and nice. When I decorate our cabins, I try to put those extra special touches, you know? You’ve got the hair dryer so you don’t have to bring yours. When I decorate, I try to do it in a way where it feels comfortable and people are going to like it. It does feel ‘mountainy.’ I don’t like the moose-bear thing like everyone else does. So I tend to make it with a little biker theme but comfortable and clean. We have cabins here So I tend to make it with a little biker theme but comfortable and clean.
You can Win with Born To Ride on the next Ultimate Mountain Destination Giveaway!
We have cabins here that you can look at on our website with the virtual tour. There are 28, and they are all different which is really neat! Folks come to stay in a cabin and they like it. I have folks that come all the time but change cabins on their visits because they want to see all of them and the different options that are available. It’s the uniqueness of our homeowners here that really shows through in the decorating. So, it’s kinda neat to see that as well!” Debbie: “So this is a cabin that you can either rent for a weekend, a week, two weeks, the summer. Or purchase? You handle the maintenance for them, right? Michelle: “That’s right. The resort was originally designed as a place where folks BTR 14 | BORNTORIDE.COM
can have ownership. We’ve continued that vision. We’ve sold 28 of the cabins. We’ll probably end up with 52 once we’re done. We’re about half-way there. You can buy a cabin; one or two bedroom options. You’re in the one where there are two king bedrooms, a private motorcycle garage, lots of outdoor living space, outdoor hot tub. Great for two couples traveling together. Great for you, Ron, and the kids. Lots of options there. You can purchase the cabin! You will own the land, the cabin, all of the improvements. And if you elect to participate in the rental pool, what most of our owners do, you go home and don’t worry about it. We take care of everything. We rent them out. We do all of the marketing, checking in and checking out, maintenance, mow the grass,
all of those things and send you a check at the end of the month. There’s only a few lots left. Once they are gone, that will be it.” Debbie: “I got my eye on one of those right about now! Copperhead Lodge! Blairsville, Georgia. Beautiful roads, beautiful cabins, beautiful lodge and scenery and the best people you could ever work with! “So, where are we heading next?” “We’re headed to the Copperhead Lodge. We’ve got a few curves to get through before we get there, but that’s where we’re headed!” Barry and Nancy Crapps were winners of the Copperhead Lodge giveaway! “I was really excited when I heard we won the trip! I’ve wanted to come up here for a while. I’ve seen it on Facebook and in advertisements.
Go to CopperheadLodge.com/BTRFL and tell them why you should Win!
It’s great and it’s beautiful up here. If you want great curvy, mountainous roads, then this is going to be the place you want to come to. If you go up the skyway, you’ll go up a good 300 feet. The views are all the way in and all the way out. The Lodge has been excellent. Michelle is a great tour guide. She led us on a tour yesterday. She’s a really good rider; she knows where she’s going. She’s a great guide. They are very nice people, very accommodating. If you want to ride or bring your trailer, it doesn’t matter. They have enough room. Just come on up. The cabins are beautiful, clean, and nice. Kinda feels like you’re at your house. We are already planning our next trip here—hopefully in the fall!” Bruce and Cheryl Krause were other lucky winners! “I was the lucky winner in the contest that they had for a free weekend. I won and here we are. It’s motorcyclethemed. The bed was so comfortable. Michelle did a swell job here. I wish them BTR 16 | BORNTORIDE.COM
the best of luck.” What about the rides that you took? “We did the waterfall rides. There were some good switchback curves. I can’t zoom around them as quick as I want to. The country up here is beautiful and gorgeous. The ride to and from the dam was beautiful. The people here are so friendly. The room was immaculate! Everything we needed was in there. No complaints!” So, what would you say to someone that’s never been to Copperhead Lodge before? “It’s absolutely worth the trip! Even the ride getting here was beautiful. I highly recommend it.” Bill Graumann was another winner! “I was pretty excited. I went on the BTR Copperhead website and signed up for the free stay. I was anxious to see if my name would be drawn. I got an email from Michelle at the Copperhead saying I had been picked. We made it and it’s been great! The hospitality, food, and accommodations are great at the Copperhead. I’m like most
bikers; it’s not the destination, it’s the journey. This is one place that has changed my mind; this is a great destination and I recommend it for everybody!” What about the riding? There are some really great roads to ride. “Oh, it’s been awesome. The scenery has been great. Every place you stop: the hospitality of all the people, the general stores, the large stores, the restaurants—everyone is just great up here! The riding is awesome! You can get out on some open roads and enjoy some fast scenery. You can get on The Gauntlet and ride some elevation. It’s just breathtaking for me. Come here! You’ll be very, very pleased!” Another winner, Fred Scadron, shared his story with us on winning the Copperhead Getaway Weekend. “I saw there was a sweepstakes. And I said, ‘I never win anything.’ What do I have to lose? I was already on the Internet. I got a call two weeks later. I told my wife and she was ecstatic!
Special Thanks to Harley-Davidson of Tampa and Ramp Free Motorcycle Trailers
I’ve never been in the mountains and I have never ridden in the mountains! I can’t tell you about the breathtaking experience and the adrenalin rush we both had. This made us an awesome experience that we’ll never forget. We definitely want to come back here. I really appreciate Born To Ride in putting this together for us.” Debbie Galletti: “I’m promising you that once you come to Copperhead Lodge to visit, you’re going to ask Michelle, ‘How do I buy one of these cabins and make this part of my mountain home?’ Michelle, your website has a lot of information! “It does! You can go to our website: copperheadlodge.com. On there, you can see all of our information about rental. The cabins are there via virtual tour so you can look at the cabin you’ll be staying in. If you’re interested in purchasing a cabin, you can also visit our website that is dedicated to all the things for sale. That email is: cabins@copperhead.com. Easiest thing to do is pick up the phone and give me a call:
706-835-7433. I can send you information by email, or I can send you information by snail mail. Tons of information about the rental performance over the last few years, floor plans, colors, etc. Ron picked right up on the colors when he walked in the door this morning. He picked Aztec as his color. We will do whatever you want. It’s a personal thing. In fact, Anthony is out right now with a new owner from North Carolina. They are working on the final touches of their cabin, working on those final colors. It’s really a fun process! Once you become part of the cabin ownership family, we call it ‘Living the Lifestyle.’ You go back home and we take care of everything. At the end of the day, you are a part of our community and part of the lifestyle here at Copperhead Lodge.” “It’s a great investment if you’re thinking down the road ‘I might interested in retiring part of the time in Florida, part of the time in Georgia, why not invest in something like this now where there’s return on your
money while investing in your retirement.” “Absolutely! They are a great investment on the rental perspective. And in addition, times have not been great the past few years. In fact, probably one of the worst economies. However, we continued to gain appreciation. We’ve gained between 2025% in our cabins. Frankly, that’s because we’ve got the lodge here, it is a resort. It’s not just a cabin in the woods as you alluded to earlier. It’s really like a community. We are continuing on seeing improvement. We’ve sold six cabins in the last three months. There are a lot of new people joining the family. We’re going forward, we’re going upward. Now is the time to buy. They are priced right. There are only a few slots left. Once they are gone, that will be it.” Debbie: “I took a little stop after taking all the twisties and the curves! WOW! This is the Lake Burton Fish Hatchery. Say hello to John Lee Thompson, state trout stocking coordinator! This place is something to see on your sightseeing here in Georgia.”

“Right now we’ve got mostly little fish in the hatchery. These fish will stay here and be stocked out next year. The big fish in the hatchery will go out between now and Labor Day. Georgia DNR with cooperation with the US Fish and Wildlife Service stock over one million trout in Georgia each year.” Ron: “How important is that to the economy or fishing? What does it impact?” John: “Well, it’s highly economically driven. We want people to come to Georgia to go trout fishing. You have to buy a special, not only in addition to a state license, but a special trout stamp to fish in trout waters in Georgia. We want people to come in and come up here and stay in our parks—like Moccasin Creek Park— right next door, buy gas, ice and tackle. “In order to get people to come to Georgia from Florida, we have to have a nice fishing product here in Georgia. We have native and wild trout populations here in Georgia. They just don’t grow really fast. We want to sustain the amount of fishing pressure BTR 20 | BORNTORIDE.COM
and have quality fishing here in Georgia, so we kinda need to be putting these fish out.” Ron: “Are the trout in all the lakes here in Georgia? Where do they go?” John: “Primarily the trout are stocked in streams and rivers. Lake Burton is one of the few reservoirs here that is stocked with trout. It has about 28,000 brown trout a year. We’re actually putting those fish in to control non-native bait fish called blue-back heron. The blue-back heron eats all the sport fish eggs and fry in the lake. So we introduced another predator to eat it and create a little bit of sport fishery at the same time.” “We have a Clarksville address. Clarksville is actually located 20 miles to the south of us on highway 197. Highway 197 was originally an old highway road and was built in the 1930s by the civilian conservation corps. Debbie: “This is awesome! We just got news this week that there is a shortage of cows and the price of beef is going up. So make your way over to Georgia! They’ve got trout here! Forget the beef prices!
Stuart Fincher: “It’s been a really great weekend and we’ve enjoyed it! Michelle and Anthony are phenomenal people, the mountains are phenomenal, and we’ve got John Wayne and Dawn Smith from Angel City. I’m glad to have them here. They rode with us yesterday. You couldn’t ask for better weather! It’s been cool. Like I said, it’s just gorgeous, man! The only time I like better is the fall where we have the leaves changing. Ron Galletti: “I want to say that we had an amazing mountain getaway here at Copperhead Lodge. I really want to thank the staff at Harley-Davidson Tampa. Gary Bang, thank you for everything you did for us! You gave us these beautiful motorcycles! We tried to rent them but you hooked us up, man! And I’ll tell you what! The Limited 2014 handles and rides the mountains great! You’ve got to come to the Copperhead Lodge, call Michelle and she will sell you the cabin of your dreams or just stay a weekend and find out for yourself how wonderful Copperhead Lodge really is.
No matter the season, there is always a reason to visit Copperhead Lodge.

2014 BMW The aspirations of BMW Motorrad with regard to future generations of boxer-powered roadsters take concrete, emotionally charged shape at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este 2014 in the form of the BMW Concept Roadster. It was here that BMW Motorrad presented the BMW Concept Ninety last year—a modern interpretation of a classic BMW motorcycle with boxer engine that demonstrated just how emotional a 90-year BMW Motorrad retrospective can be. By contrast, the BMW Concept Roadster embodies the future of the BMW boxer-powered roadster: “The BMW Concept Roadster shows that as far as BMW is concerned, motorcycling is about far more than just perfect function. This concept bike is a symbol of how modern and emotional a boxer-powered BMW roadster can be,” explains Edgar Heinrich, head of BMW Motorrad Design. IS AMERICA STILL THE LAND OF THE FREE? By RoadBlock 1%er
After 30 years in prison, I expected a changed world when I was finally allowed to go home. There were many technology changes like cell phones and personal computers, and “convenience” changes, like drive-thru restaurants and self-service gas stations. Those, I could understand and appreciate. And the modern motorcycles! What an experience that was to ride for the first time in 30 years. However, the most overwhelming change I encountered wasn’t good: I saw the destructive direction our country has taken in those three decades, all at the hands of the U.S. government. Over the past 30+ years, it has quickly morphed into the very thing this country’s citizens have fought against and died for over the last 200 years, both here and overseas. America is no longer a nation of “We the People” protected by the Constitution and Bill of Rights. America is now what the government and politicians so proudly refer to as “A Nation of Laws.” They are determined to make the Constitutional rights and protections this country was founded on a thing of the past. WHAT HAPPENED: The U.S. government’s power-mongers chose to follow the path of the Soviet Union, China, Germany and other dictatorial governments in the past. Those countries began their destructive rule by declaring segments of its populations to be undesirables who didn’t deserve the same rights as everyone else (consider the harassment of today’s motorcycle riders). Those governments then began a propaganda blitz to demonize, discredit and dehumanize the selected groups. Once this was done, they persuaded other citizens to spy on the targeted
groups and report everything to government agencies. HOW DID THIS HAPPEN in the US: Our government and politicians have slowly taken away our constitutional rights and individual protections under the guise of protecting American citizens from harm. The government claims that in order to protect us, we must allow them to spy on us, and track and collect all of our private phone and internet conversations. Furthermore, our neighbors, doctors, and teachers are being pressured to report personal information about our families to these agencies. The sickest thing they have done so far is to adopt one of Hitler’s favorite programs and recruit American children to spy on and report on their own parents. Playing on our fears, particularly from the 9/11 tragedy onward, the government has pretended to benevolently protect us from harm. Instead, what they have accomplished is gaining almost total power and control over our lives. THEIR ATTITUDE ABOUT OUR RIGHT TO PRIVACY: To demonstrate how successful the government’s plan is, I’ll relate a conversation I recently had with a military officer working for Homeland Security. Bear in mind this man swore an oath to protect and defend the Constitution against all enemies both foreign and domestic. I asked him if he thought the government’s invasive collection and storage of everyone’s personal phone and internet conversations crossed the line. He said: “Why should people worry about it if they aren’t doing anything wrong?” Does anyone realistically believe the government will not manipulate or abuse the harvested information? Most of us know better.
WHAT CAN BE DONE ABOUT IT? Who or what will protect us from the government power-abusers and their unconstitutional practices? After the signing of the “Declaration of Independence,” no legal constraints were placed on the new U.S. government, which promptly got out of control. (Policing malicious politicians has always been a problem for America’s citizens.) In response, on September 17, 1787, our forefathers solved that problem. In their wisdom, they gave American citizens the Constitution and Bill of Rights. The Constitution and Bill of Rights were designed to keep an abusive government in check. But unlike criminal law, which is prosecuted by the government, enforcing constitutional law falls squarely on the citizens, who must become the prosecutors. I don’t advocate armed rebellion against the government. I believe constitutional law will trump the abusive laws set out by boughtand-paid politicians. Those same arrogant politicians don’t want you to know that laws are a two-edged sword that can cut both ways, and they have no immunity when it’s prosecuted properly. The fact that most people don’t understand how constitutional law works has made it possible for a select group of tyrants to escalate their misuse of power to an intolerable level. The government demands that the American citizens follow their law. It is time for the citizens to demand their government also follow constitutional law. You can take up The Gauntlet for an adventure designed for enjoyment by motorcyclists and sports car owners. Take the challenge to get bragging rights and be the first to own the t-shirt. OCTOBER IS NATIONAL BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH
3. Statistically two lane roads are the most dangerous for bikers. It’s certainly good to smell the fresh country air, but it does not mean you don’t have to be aware of your surroundings and anticipate for hazards. 4. When you ride on the interstate, avoid the far right lane. The far right lane has the most activity and presents the most challenges, and of course has the most incidents. The HOV lane is a great choice when it is available.
We all know riding in Atlanta traffic can be a daunting and challenging task. Deciding where to ride can be confusing and frustrating. Some basic concepts of proper lane selection can ease your pain and make your engagement with the cagers a little less chaotic. 1. Be visible. Wearing bright colored clothes can help with visibility, but what is really important is to make your motorcycle visible. I often see bikers place themselves in precarious positions, which results in drivers not seeing the motorcycle. This is especially dangerous because drivers really aren’t looking for motorcyclists to begin with. You need to accept the responsibility of placing yourself in the best possible position. 2. Never, never, never ride behind vehicles that you cannot see in front of. Getting behind a SUV, trucks, and minivans, is a really bad idea. Having your field of vision blocked does not leave you time to react to roadway hazards. Trucks can also easily run over objects in the roadway that are insurmountable on a motorcycle.
BTR 34 | BORNTORIDE.COM
5. Following distance is another big issue. The minimum following distance is 2 seconds, but this of course is based on your reaction time, the environment, and traffic conditions. If your reaction time is not so good, you need more than 2 seconds. If your riding skills are not top shelf, you need more than 2 seconds. 6. IF you intend to pass a vehicle, then do it and complete the task. It is not a good idea to ride alongside a car, or truck, especially if you are in their blind spot. One advantage a motorcycle has is the ability to accelerate, so do not be afraid to utilize it. 7. Lane selection should incorporate some of these concepts: Avoiding blind spots, increasing your ability to see the roadway, being visible to other roadway users, and providing yourself with potential escape routes. Riding is a dynamic activity it requires constant adjustment and improvising, especially in traffic situations. In general, there is no one best place to ride, as that position changes with traffic and conditions. If you incorporate some of these ideas into your ride, navigating Atlanta traffic will be less of challenge for you. visit: www.twowheeladventures.com. Ride Safe, Chris Carr

Lakota Outlaw
The publisher of this magazine has told me that I can write or say anything I want in this Ramble On of mine. Well, this month I’m not writing anything about motorcycles. Instead I’m going to write about Lakota Outlaw. This month I had to make a decision that I have been dreading for a quite a while now. Lakota was over 13 years old and he was not getting along too well and I had to make the call to give him eternal freedom.
Let me tell you a little about Lakota and me. Lakota was a white Siberian husky with blues eyes and the spirit and curious personality of a dozen other dogs. I picked him up when he was just 5 weeks old and it had been just him and me for all of those years. I’m a single guy with no kids, so he and I were in it together for all of that time. I have had many great dogs in my life and each one has had its own individual personality traits that made them their own kind of special. Lakota was one of a kind. I’m not going to tell you everything about him; Stuart won’t give me enough pages to do that. But as I’m writing this Ramble of mine, there is a thunderous storm going on outside and Lakota never liked them very much. For most of his life I lived in a loft in Atlanta and at the first sound of a thunder clap or just a roll, Lakota would take off upstairs to sleep it away. I never told him that by going upstairs it was actually getting him closer to the storm, it seemed to make him feel safer so that was good enough for me. I believe he thought he was going deeper into our cave.
I get how tough it is. When I took Lakota on that last ride to the vet and we began the process, I stayed right there on the floor with him. After he was given a sedative, I petted him and spoke to him until his head lowered into my hand. The doctor came in and asked if I would like to leave before the final injection, but there was no way I was leaving him now. I stayed with Lakota until his last heartbeat.
When I returned home I felt a great emptiness as soon as I walked through the door and it has lasted for many days. The light that Lakota brought to our home for so long was gone. That first night this grown ass man cried so much that my eyes began to hurt. My buddy, my companion of 13 years was free and I was left with memories. But this was about him, not me. That’s what we all have to remember. When you make the decision that your furry friend has reached their last day, they don’t know that they’re not coming home again. They don’t know that this is their last ride. But they will no longer suffer or struggle to get by. They will be at peace and this animal that has depended on you for everything its entire life now depends on you to do the right thing for them, just one last time. As always, feel free to bitch me out on our Facebook page if you disagree. www.facebook.com/BornToRideGeorgia
Well, life had become pretty tough for Lakota in these last few months. I kept doing what I could and making it as comfortable for him as I possible. But time was quickly taking its toll on my old buddy and I knew his final day was quickly approaching. And on that day, when I knew it was just the right thing to do, I hated every minute of it, but I want to make this point. When your dog or pet reaches that point where their life really has no true quality to it, then they’re just there for you. That, my friends, is about the most selfish thing anyone can do, keep an animal around just because you can’t make the tough decision. At this time, your buddy is counting on you to have the courage to do the right thing and let them move on.

Air Combat and Street Riding I recently purchased the complete box set of the old History Channel series, “Dogfights.” The series retells, and recreates in digital animation, many of the great air battles of the past century. My favorites are the episodes about the planes, pilots and battles of WWII and Vietnam, and the tactics and technologies employed in air-to-air combat. Having grown up a proud Air Force brat, I have always been fascinated with fighter aircraft and the jockeys who have flown them. It’s fascinating listening to the interviews with fighter pilots from the different wars and eras, picking up on their common lingo and language. Being a motorcycle rider, I’ve found many similarities between the phrases and practices of pilots in combat, and the necessary skills a motorcyclist should possess for the street. 1. Don’t Target Fixate- If a fighter pilot gets “tunnel vision,” i.e. fixating on a specific target to the exclusion of anything else around him, he is vulnerable to attack from undetected enemies. Focusing so intently on the engagement in front of him can lead a pilot to become the unwitting and unwilling target of an enemy aircraft behind him. In the same way, when riding a motorcycle, if the rider fixates on an object or situation unfolding in front of him, he can lose awareness of what might be happening more immediately around or behind him, and hence put himself in danger. Solution? Snap out of it, look beyond the object or obstacle, and negotiate a path through or around. 2. Get Your Head on a Swivel- Fighter pilots are trained to not just look around constantly, but move their heads around and up/down, to gain the widest possible field of view. For the motorcyclist, this means he must move his head, not just his eyes, as he scans his environment. Use all of your range of head and eye motion to visually scan. Studies show the average human has around 170 degrees of peripheral vision. Couple that with approximately 90 degrees of side-to-side head rotation, plus the
nearly 90 degrees of eye motion side-to-side, and the average person has approximately 360 degrees of visual field. *Try this: Look straight ahead, and test your peripheral vision by moving your two index fingers from front/center, to either side. See how far around your fingers are still visible? Now, still looking straight out past your nose, move your head as far to either side as you can. Once you are at your limit, check your peripherals again. Finally, with your head turned as far as you can, move your eyes as far to each side as well. You should be able to see, with peripheral vision, head turn, and eye turn, actually farther than 360 degrees. Amazing! Owls got nothing on us. 3. Eyes Outside the Cockpit- Fighter pilots must constantly remember to scan far out in front of them, and not just rely on their instruments and high-tech equipment. No technology has, or ever will, take the place of the human eye. As motorcyclists, we must also learn to perceive far out in front, and not just focus on the road immediately in front of us. Experts say we should visually search as far as 12 seconds ahead of us, to give the maximum amount of time to “Scan, Predict, Act” as the old MSF course taught us. 4. Check Your 6 O’clock- Pilots must always glance behind them while in dogfight situations, to insure they don’t have someone on their tail, about to shoot them down. Many a pilot has been blown from the sky or worse, met their demise, by neglecting to “check the 6.” In the same way, prior to any maneuver, a motorcyclist should check mirrors and glance side-to-side before execution. Be aware of any and all activity around and behind, to insure no one or nothing “takes you out.” Fighter pilots operate in a complete “look up, look down, look all around” environment, and must constantly practice these skills and others for their very survival. Though we as motorcyclists are not engaging in literal combat,
riding a bike can be a dangerous, even deadly, endeavor. Constantly changing road conditions, weather, traffic variables, distracted, aggressive “cagers”- it can feel like a war zone on the streets. So I’ve come to practice these simple tactics every time I ride, borrowed from veteran fighter pilots who have seen and survived combat. They certainly apply well to riding. Rob Brooks is a writer, a rider, and a man of faith and family. He has recently published a book, entitled “Road Dirt: The Musings & Ramblings of a Biker Preacher,” available on Amazon Books and Amazon Kindle.

Love Jugs, manufactured by Hammerhead Engineering, the World’s Best Harley-Davidson V-Twin Engine Cooling System was designed to take care of a problem that has affected numerous Harley-Davidson owners worldwide—EXTREME engine heat. The first Love Jugs prototype was developed when one of the company founders, Steve West had an extreme heat problem when he rode his new Harley Ultra Touring bike, especially at low speeds. Fifteen prototypes later, and extensive collaboration with a group of scientific developers, Love Jugs was ready to come to market. The driving principles behind the product are straightforward—a hot air cooled engine temperature will go down as air flows over the air cooling fins of the engine, particularly if the air is directed at the hottest part of the engine. That is the simple premise, but only Love Jugs delivers the results riders need to bring down and hold down engine temperatures. A cooler running engine means lower ambient temperature experienced by the motorcycle rider and passenger. If it is more comfortable, riders will stay on their bikes longer and ride more often. Love Jugs keeps you on the road in conditions that would have BTR 42 | BORNTORIDE.COM
otherwise kept your bike in the garage. The high velocity constant air flow provided by Love Jugs relieves stress on your bikes’ engine and drive train by reducing the temperature of your bikes oil. Cooler oil means two important things—higher oil viscosity to better lubricate critical internal engine components and higher oil pressure to make sure the lube gets where it is needed when it is needed. Love Jugs combine high performance with great looks at a great price. The aircraft quality stainless steel housings are polished to a high chrome finish are the toughest on the market. It will stand up to the harshest conditions—one product test includes operating the fans while fully submerged in a tank of water. The suggested retail price is $349 when you order direct from the company website. All Love Jugs cooling systems are shipped for FREE in the US via Priority Mail, so new owners usually receive their orders in just two days. Ready for your COOL ride? Band Review: Roadhouse Atlanta Roadhouse Atlanta is a band that has been featured in past issues of Born To Ride magazine, but since they continue to play many motorcycle events and venues, always rocking the house and pleasing the crowd, I felt them worthy of updated review. Just as in reviews past, Roadhouse Atlanta continues to please. Regardless of the venue, I have always enjoyed their music and their show, but it seems like they just keep getting better, and why not? When you play over 70 dates a year as a band you are bound to improve, even if you’re pretty damned good to start with. In just this last calendar year they have performed at the Spring Angel City Rally, Knight Hawk Rally, Thunder Mountain Gauntlet Rally, Cave Spring Rally, and The Destination Helen Rally. In addition to these rallies, Roadhouse has played their music and entertained crowds at over a dozen bike night shows all over the southeastern United States. In the past, they have also performed at the Pensacola Beach Song Writers Festival and University of West Georgia’s West Fest where they shared the bill with country star Corey Smith. In addition to all of that, the band has also performed at over a dozen Harley-Davidson dealerships around the South. A lot of good bands are high energy and play good music, but Roadhouse proves to be much more. When ROADHOUSE ATLANTA performs, they clearly concentrate their efforts on making the audience part of the show. Most all of the band members (they haven’t figured out how to get the drummer in the crowd yet) go out into the crowd to play and sing, and will even sing along with their crowd on songs such as Roadhouse Blues and Rebel Yell. Roadhouse will even give out Mardi Gras beads to the ladies just for dancing, which they seem to love. ROADHOUSE ATLANTA make their audience part of the show and as an audience member that is what you are looking for. They even have the audience shout back on their PLAY ONE DRINK ONE themed drinking game. Front man Brad Cornwell, who the guys in the band refer to as the ringmaster of the circus, is one of the finest front men around. His vocals are matched only by his charm and wit in between songs as he is never at a loss for words. His partner in crime is Guitar Slinger Tom Rhodes House who matches Cornwell with plenty of bluesy rock riffs that you know and love. Don’t be surprised at any time during the night to look up and see Brad on a table top singing and Tom playing behind his head or with his teeth. These two are paired perfectly with the loveable Jeff “Brash” Brashears on Bass who is often in the crowd dancing with the ladies and posing for pictures as he plays or hands his bass off to an audience member to play. And holding it all together anchored to the stage by his thundering drum kit is everybody’s favorite Tracy Hornbuckle, also known as Smiley, for obvious reasons. Although the bands attention to detail in the music is meticulous, they do not seem to take themselves too seriously. If you ask any of them, to the man they will tell you. It’s all about having fun. “We are here to have fun and if we have fun the audience will have fun.” You can’t fake that. People know when it’s real. If you want it real and authentic sounding and you want a classic rock band that puts on a show and gets the crowd involved, then you want to Book ROADHOUSE ATLANTA. PAST-TENSE ACCOMPLISHMENTS WITH PRE ENT-TENSE RESULTS, Part 2. Ephesians Chapters 1 & 2 Verse 8-10
God’s Past Action – He has given us wisdom and understanding, making known to us His will. My Confession – “I have the mind of Christ and hold the thoughts and feelings of His heart. I have the wisdom of God for every problem, walking in the will and plan of God for my life.”
Verse 11-12
God’s Past Action – He has given me an inheritance. My Confession – “I am blessed beyond measure. As His will is worked in me, I am destined to live for His glory. Today, I will image Christ in all my thoughts, choices, and words.”
Verse 13-14
God’s Past Action – He has sealed us with the Holy Spirit. My Confession – “I have been sealed by the Holy Spirit and nothing will
pluck me out of His hand. I am secure in Him and guaranteed victory.

Verse 19-20
God’s Past Action – He has placed within us the same power that raised Jesus from the dead. My Confession – “Greater is He who lives in me; the same power that raised Jesus from the dead lives in me. Chapter 2 Verse 1, God’s Past Action – He has made us alive in Christ. My Confession – “Spiritual death has no hold on me. I am eternally alive in Jesus; God’s life dwells in me.”
Verses 5-6
God’s Past Action – He has raised us up with Christ and has seated us with him, placing our enemies under our feet. My Confession – “I have been raised up with Christ. I am now seated with him at the Father’s right hand. All enemies are under my feet. If the devil wants to say anything to me, he must write it on the bottom of my shoe.”
