The Harley-Davidson Museum is excited to announce its special summer exhibit for 2015, which will honor motorcycling’s legend behind the legends - Willie G. Davidson. The exhibit, titled Willie G. Davidson: Artist, Designer, Leader, Legend opens June 13 and runs through Sept. 7, 2015. Housed in the Garage special event space, visitors will experience a celebration of the artistry, influence and impact of a man whose designs have defined American motorcycles for generations. Key elements include previously unseen historical artifacts and items from Willie’s personal collection that provide insight into his unique perspective, personal style, creative process, inspiration and influences. In addition, one-of-a-kind vehicles, original designs, art, rare artifacts and media paint an engaging portrait of this iconic figure, his influential career, legacy, and current work. Additional details about the Willie G. Davidson: Artist, Designer, Leader, Legend exhibit will be released next spring. Biographical information: Willie G. Davidson serves as Chief Styling Officer Emeritus and Brand Ambassador at Harley-Davidson, Inc. He is affection-

ately known by millions of motorcycle enthusiasts as “Willie G.,” and he is the grandson of one of the original founders, William A. Davidson. Street Strategies at Work THE SHARK

Imagine a typical scene from a naturenetwork documentary, one that shows a fur seal frantically swimming with a great white shark in ruthless pursuit, the huge snout of the shark filling the television screen. In the corresponding street scene, you’re riding your motorcycle down a wide arterial street when a huge sedan closes in on you, its grille filling your mirrors. Just as you change lanes to get out of this car-shark’s path,

the tailgater also changes lanes behind you. What are your best strategies for avoiding (or evading) this situation? Strategy: As soon as you notice a tailgater approaching in your mirrors, take steps to get out of the way. Activate your turn signal and make an obvious, decisive lane change to the right or left. If the car is already upon you before you notice its presence, take care before making a move to avoid the “shark

pursuit” situation described above. When evading a shark, signal early and pause for just an instant (to make sure that the tailing driver isn’t also planning to change into the same lane) before making a definite and decisive move into the other lane. Your actions should clearly communicate your intentions to the other driver so he is fully aware of what moves you intend to make. More information go to www.msf-usa.org

Route 66--the fabled ribbon of asphalt and concrete still winds its way across the country from Chicago to L.A. And it has also wound its way into the very soul of America. Although superseded in the 1970s by the Interstate freeways, the magic and mystic of the Mother Road has never died. Within the pages of the superbly illustrated book is a colorful illustrated history of the road and its landmarks of the famed RT 66. Put that together with Jim Bush’s story of devotion and passion as he has dedicated a true epic of ink to the legendary RT 66 on his body to show tribute for all to see. We at Born to Ride are thankful and excited to tell both sides of the story. ABOUT THE BOOK: It started in the heartland and originally ended in Los Angeles (not, contrary to myth, at the ocean). It carried truckers crossing the country, Okies fleeing the Dust Bowl, vacationers seeking the sun. It was Americas Main Street, the Mother Road, the Will Rogers Highway, and, at its dangerous curves, Bloody 66. Get your kicks on Route 66 with this wonderfully illustrated tribute to the best-loved highway in this car-loving nation. Michael Witzel shares his expertise and wealth of personal, archive, collector, and contributing photographer images in these pages, offering a nostalgic tour of the charms and oddities of this road through American cultural history. Starting in Chicago and running to Santa Monica, this book BTR 16 | BORNTORIDE.COM

K

highlights the sights along the highway with historic and current photos in then-and-now pairings, and includes Route 66 postcards, road signs, trinkets, maps, brochures, and advertisements. Here we see Route 66 as it was in its heyday and as it is now, the neon glamour of yesterday versus the ghost towns of today. Witzel and his wife, Gyvel Young-Witzel, recount the highways history, its role in popular culture, and its demise, as well as the individual stories of famous sights. Several profiles of those with close ties to the Mother Road, including the woman who played Ruthie Joad in the The Grapes of Wrath film, are included. ABOUT THE AUTHORS: Michael Witzel and Gyvel Young Witzel are some of the best known American car culture historians. Michael is the author of Route 66 Remembered as well as a dozen other pop culture histories, including with co-author Gyvel, Soda Pop! and The Sparkling Story of Coca-Cola. Michael Witzel and Gyvel Young-Witzel reside in Austin, Texas. About one minute into listening to Jim Bush’s bike and tattoo story I knew it traveled beyond the norm, if norm is ever used in the world of tattooing and custom bikes. The Bolingbrook, Illinois resident is a walking and talking monument for a major slice of American culture. He’s covered, figuratively speaking, with nearly 2,500 miles of ink stretching from Chicago to Los Angeles. To be specific, he’s paved in the history of the famous Route 66. Route 66 is America’s first

BTR 18 | BORNTORIDE.COM

transcontinental roadway and the subject of countless stories, books, and songs -- not forgetting that famous 1960s TV show of the same name. Before we head down that road, a background check on Jim reveals that while he’s an engineer by training he’s an expert in “Loss Prevention” for commercial and industrial Fortune 500 companies. He adds, “It’s a career that pretty much will put you to sleep. It involves engineering work for an

insurance company that insures factories against business interruption.” Jim says its best to leave that explanation as it stands without delving further, and I agreed! My interest was his ink and bike story. The ink motoring down his arms is an incredible profusion of indelible images. It all started years ago when Jim decided to get his first tat, something patriotic. “I was just going to get a little American eagle and that was going to be it.” He began researching

U.S. Route 66 (also known as the Will Rogers Highway, “Main Street of America” or the “Mother Road”)

through all the images but here’s some highlights. On Jim’s left arm there’s a turquoise ’55 Chevy with a license plate that reads 2448 that commemorates Route 66’s total mileage. The Standard Oil gas station attendant on his right arm is the image of his grandfather. “That filling station opened in the early 1950s on Route 66. It’s still there, owned by my family. My grandfather’s sons still work there with my cousins.” And if you look carefully you’ll find a Ferris wheel on Chicago’s Navy pier. Walking up to that Ferris wheel, Larry has drawn the figures of Jim, his wife, and his youngest son. Jim’s art is amazing but Jim also has an award show winning Black Pan, but that is another story for a future issue. Do you have a memory of Route 66? Tell us about your Route 66 story. Before you start reading this story, you need to get your calendar and Sharpie pen out! Yes, a Sharpie pen because you don’t want to miss out on the activities that will be taking place on March 20 – March 22 in Manatee County! Ranch Jam is going to be one enormous and most entertaining event you’ve been to in a long time! Why? Because one of the most popular and well—known artists will be playing some of your favorite songs! Do these titles ring a bell? “Mountain Music,” “Song of the South,” and “Feels So Right”. … Alabama is among the world’s best-selling bands of all time, having sold a combined 75 million albums and singles. Alabama’s best-selling studio album is Mountain Music (1982), while two greatest hits albums—Greatest Hits (1986) and For the Record (1998)—are among their highest in individual sales, with all three totaling five million in sales. Alabama received multiplatinum success for several albums; their albums currently certified quadruple platinum include Feels So Right, The Closer You Get and Roll On, while Alabama’s double platinum records include My Home’s in Alabama, 40-Hour Week, Alabama Christmas and Greatest Hits Volume III. Who would have the ability to bring us one of America’s favorite country bands? Cyndee Boelkins is the one pulling this event together. She is the festival coordinator and talent buyer for Ranch Jam. I was able to spend some time with her in her office in Bradenton. “What we are doing here is helping further the musicians’ careers. I book Jeff Cook and the AGB (All-star Goodtime Band), Joseph Hall who plays Elvis, and Las Vegas Larry the Cable Guy. I also manage Jake Castro. Ranch Jam, March 20, 21, 22, 941-567-9427, RanchJam.net

He’s a 13-year old guitar phenome and also international star Bertie Higgins. We are building music festivals again. We are doing two events a year; Ranch Jam in the spring and a gospel festival in the fall. I’ve been working on Ranch Jam since April of 2014.” Cyndee has always loved music. Then Alabama came into her life. She became friends with Jeff Cook, thanks to some introductions by mutual friends. She went to many concerts including the June Jams Alabama had every year. “In 2000, I went to Jeff and told him he needed to get on the Internet. We built a website for him and it was huge! Sometimes on Friday nights we’d have chat night and there would be so many people on this live chat with Jeff that it would crash the website!” Over the years, Cyndee’s involvement and honesty provided her the opportunity to start booking Jeff’s band, the AGB. Her modesty and desire to see that none of her clients get taken advantage of creates yet another creative and business layer of this remarkable woman. Let’s start sharing the good news of this Ranch Jam Weekend and all that Cyndee and her team are planning for you! On Friday, March 20, Jeff Cook of Alabama will be kicking off the weekend party with his band, AGB – All-star Goodtime Band. Jeff, as many of you know, is one of the founding members of Alabama. I was able to catch him quickly to interview him for this article! How have you seen music change over the last decade? “Whatever label they put on it, there is going to be a certain kind of people who are going to listen to it. This is true of every kind of music. It has changed since we first came out and I am sure it will change again.” BORNTORIDE.COM | BTR 37

Your AGB is a huge hit with many fans! Why did you start this band? “Having a band with horns has been a long time dream of mine, and I feel lucky to have a collection of guys who are as talented as they are. When we perform I don’t hog the show. Each one of these guys can sing lead as well as being top notched musicians and it is a pleasure to play in this band.” Are you excited to come to Florida and be a part of the Ranch Jam? “I’m always excited to come to Florida unless there is a hurricane. Why? Because it’s not hurricane season, and because it reminds me of the June Jam we used to have in Fort Payne.” What would you like to say to the thousands of people who read Born To Ride about Ranch Jam and your involvement. “I like playing events where there are other bands. Some are friends, some I have not met or seen before that I would like to. Any musician likes seeing a large crowd, watching the reaction of the people. The best part is making new fans along with getting to see the diehards. Ranch Jam is going to be fun!” March 21, Alabama will be hitting the stage along with Neil McCoy, Restless Heart, Hotel California, and Kat Cosby. The winner of the Battle of the Bands will open the festival that day as well! Sunday, March 22, The Guess Who will be coming to play. In addition, Molly Hatchet, Highway To Hell, The Jake Castro Band, The Backtrack Blues Band, and one of my personal favorites, the Rick Derringer Band! I was able to speak with Rick while he was on the road and asked him a few questions about his music and participating in Ranch Jam. Your career is a pretty full one and you’re still out there making music. Can you tell me what was your favorite artist you played with over the years and why. “Well, in 1966 we did the whole Rolling Stones tour in the US. That was a high point in my life. In 2012, I had the opportunity of playing with Ringo Starr in his All-Starr Band. That was a lot of fun, too! Both of them have been great career points in my life.” You also played with Johnny Winter. I always enjoyed watching you going toe-to-toe with him. What was it like trading licks back and forth with one another? “It was always fun. I tell people I produce all the gold and platinum records Johnny Winter recorded. The ones that weren’t gold or platinum were, coincidently, the ones I didn’t produce. Being out on the stage with him gave me the opportunity, every time, to show what I was worth and it was always an opportunity to—like you said, go ‘toe-to-toe’ with him.” You have an extremely large following of fans here in Florida. What type of songs will you be playing at The Ranch Jam?

“Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo and Hang on Sloopy. One of our biggest, most down-loaded songs is ‘Real American.’ At the Correspondents Dinner, Barak Obama used that song as his backdrop to the unveiling of his birth certificate. This song has also been used by Hulk Hogan, Hilary Clinton and Newt Gingrich. We will also do ‘Sometimes’ another big hit among our fans.” Any final words to the folks coming to The Ranch Jam? “We enjoy playing live. People like to hear CDs. But to

us, recorded music is second to hearing music live. What influenced me to get a guitar when I was a kid was listening to music live. I was so affected by this experience. I just wish to encourage everyone to come out and hear us ‘live!’—a real concert experience is to hear music being played live!” There are different price points for this amazing weekend. You can experience Ranch Jam for one day or make a long weekend by taking in all three days! Check out the listing of pricing at: www.ranchjam.net or call the Ranch Jam Hotline at: 941-567-9427. Cyndee shared with me her joy in meeting with Ron and Debbie Galletti of Born To Ride and how this new-found relationship is a huge win-win for everyone involved. “I remember having Ron and Debbie sitting here in my office. They are very passionate about what they do and I knew right then that they were the ones who would propel this event to where I envisioned it to go. Ron’s enthusiasm is real and he backs up his words with action. We had an opportunity to go with another magazine but went with Born To Ride because of the way we were treated. I love working with Born To Ride!” Now that I’ve given you the scoop, and you’ve blocked out this weekend on your calendar, you need to make your reservations NOW! You can go on the website or make a phone call for your reservation. I look forward to seeing YOU at Ranch Jam! Susan Hurst

Women’s World “WHY RIDE”

Why did I start to ride so many ask? I thought about my answer. As long as I can remember, the sound of a motorcycle would get me excited. When one passed me by, my heart would pound and I would imagine riding off into the sunset. My family continually told me ladies don’t ride motorcycles. I was told one too many times and simply decided I had to try it. I guess you can say I did it because I was told I couldn’t! How can I explain it, especially to those who have never ridden a motorcycle? You see, I was always told that motorcycles are dangerous and bikers are wild. All my life I was discouraged from riding. Never ever would I have thought that I, Ms. Feminine and professional would now be a biker lady! Some people in my circle thought I had lost my mind, but thankfully others stood by my side and encouraged me. Those who did not support the idea of me riding told me I could never handle a bike and I would never pass the riding course. Well of course, telling me I can’t do something compounded my determination and fueled my excitement to become a proficient rider. I started to ride because I knew it was time to let go of other’s expectations of how I should live my life. It’s my life and it was my turn to live it my way; as long as I was not intentionally hurting others I had to find my inner joy … my inner peace. I have learned to be proud of who I am and to celebrate the magnificence of being a well-adjusted mother, friend, and cancer survivor! The Riding and the People! The Ride: Well, my answer to why I ride … the riding and the people are what makes it such an unbelievable experience? As I rode with a local group in Boca Raton, Florida, I realized why riding is such an incredible experience. It is only when a person actually rides that she or he can really understand the joy. Sitting on my own bike, feeling of the throttle when I take off, and hearing the engine roar under me that just makes my

heart and blood rumble full of excitement. Riding is just a special time for me! Many if not all of us ladies live life full of responsibilities, and we tend to take

care of ourselves last. We are masters at multitasking and caring for everyone else: our spouses, kids, house, work etc. … Only when there is time do we stop to take care of ourselves. Riding is an opportunity to take care of yourself. If you don’t make yourself a priority, you will be no good to take care of the rest. If you are of the mindset against riding like I was raised, all I can say is to try it once and if you are not convinced then fine, but you owe it to yourself to try. Make it a “must do” item on your bucket list for this year. The People: Being real and leaving the masks behind is so freeing and powerful. The riding community varies from unemployed to multimillionaires and consists of all races, colors, and religions. People from all walks of life gather to ride and fellowship. Appearances are just appearances. You could meet the best dressed or the scariest dressed biker and it doesn’t matter. Some of the scariest bikers are the sweetest and most loving individuals. It’s giving and receiving respect. It’s helping each other. Unreal! It is just a magnificent experience. I never understood this until I became a rider. It is sad that so many people miss out on such a euphoric experience for lack

of knowledge, fear, or misinformation. I don’t care what someone looks like. I care who they are inside because that is what matters. Get to know the riding community and do not allow fear, doubt, or naysayers rob you from enhancing your horizons. It’s amazing once you get all this, how many wonderful individuals you may meet down the road! Nestled in the rolling foothills and appealing curly roads of North Georgia is a euro-motorcycle mecca, an oasis of both fresh and timeworn BMWs, Ducati’s, an occasional Goose and an eclectic throng of other interesting euro-bikes. This delightful and picturesque moto-retreat is operated by two young folks, Rachel and Wes Burden, proprietors of Apex Cycles LLC, in Ellijay GA. Rachel and Wes have a fetching story, and a first-class indie vintage eurobike establishment. Rachel, a vivacious woman, grew up around motorcycles. Rachel’s father ran a motorcycle shop; coming by a properly-sized starter bike was easy for Rachel. When she began her college studies, she commuted to classes on her first street bike, a BMW F650. Later, her regular ride was a ’92 BMW R100 with the seat replaced by a wooden, towel-wrapped board, an effective if not particularly comfortable way to reduce seat-height. Her rides today are a workin-progress BMW 1954 R51/3, and a very nice thunder-throated Ducati Monster.

In years past, Rachael became acquainted with euro-guru Dennis Kanderis. Hanging around his Cumming shop, Rachel found within herself a desire to become a technician. Dennis mentored her as an apprentice, and suggested she attend American Motorcycle Institute. Now we’ll hear Wes’ story. … Wes’ parents were firmly set against motorcycles; various familymembers had suffered motorcycle crashes in the past; therefore, Wes was forbidden to own a motorcycle. So, of course, he secretly bought a Yamaha YZ80 and stored it at a cooperative neighbor’s house. Wes would regularly sneak off from home and ride the YZ in the dirt, and return home dirty, battered and bruised. As a younger man, Wes attended Auburn University, majoring in mechanical engineering. Later, he moved to Atlanta and worked at various punk rock bars as security. During a stint at one nightclub, Wes and Rachel met; they discovered their mutual love of motorcycles, and a relationship was born.

“It could have gone either way,” both Rachel and Wes agreed, when asked why they decided to open an indie repair shop, instead of taking a steady job at a euro-bike retailer’s service department. “We really backed into the business; it grew organically, all by itself,” Rachel commented, “We had no business plan and no real idea what we were going to be doing.” But, Apex Cycles LLC was born immediately due to customer-demand. “As soon as we opened, we were busy from the first job we took in and it’s never let up. We started in 2003, and 11 years later we’re still backlogged and booked well in advance.” For over a decade, their business has kept both of them spinning wrenches, sometimes until the wee hours. Customers come to Apex Cycles strictly by word of mouth, and so far it’s kept the work-lifts full. “We get customers and freight-trucks at all hours of the day and often at night. The trucks bring projects from as far away as California and New York as well as the southeast, and trucks take someone’s new dream back to an excited owner.” Apex Cycles inherited many special tools from Dennis Kanderis when he retired, and has added a full range of tools needed for fabrication as well as normal euro-bike work. Wes is an accomplished welder; the shop sports an ultrasonic parts cleaner, an old but precise lathe, a complex milling machine, a plasma cutter, a rusty-tank-cleaning rotisserie, and much more. Wes has BTR 56 | BORNTORIDE.COM

made a variety of special tools and jigs, and can deal with most any euro-bike component. Wes says; “I love metal working, machining, anything creative that can be done in some kind of metal.” The machine shop is adding a roller drum dynamometer and a filtered paint booth. Apex also does powder-coating to match stock or custom colors. Asked which build has been their proudest accomplishment to date, Wes spoke fondly of a recently-completed 1979 R100RS BMW machine, which was given the full restoration treatment, including extensive head-work, a fully balanced engine and much custom engine and frame work. Apex frequently gets basket cases, like a recent 1968 BMW R60US that arrived in pieces, filthy, disorganized, water-soaked and generally disgusting. Motos like this leave Apex as functional, pretty and desirable custom motorcycles that have been given a second lease on life—or third— who knows? In addition to dealing with customers’ commissions, Apex Cycles does buy and sell older euro-bikes, and as the business grows they hope to do more of this. Readers perhaps now see that the focus of Apex Cycles is to continue to build a solid word-of-mouth clientele; “We find that people who come to us as referrals are a special breed of customer who often become dedicated enthusiasts of Apex Cycles.” To earn this kind of support, Wes and Rachel cultivate

contacts around the world that can provide new old stock parts, no longer available parts, custom bits and technical support when needed. Brit and Continental motorbike parts are becoming a bit more expensive to obtain—aftermarket sources in Europe and Asia are offering relief with reasonable prices. Any preferences? Rachel loves working on her BMW R51/3, and anyone else’s BMW Slash 3, and Wes is happy working on just about any Goose, Ducati, KTM or BMW Airhead; he avoids BMW K-Bike work. Rachel was unwavering in her distaste for working on Dellorto carburetors. Why older euro-bikes? “We like the older designs, and are both dedicated to the timeworn stuff. We both prefer the post-WWII to 1969 era, as well as the modern-era retros.” Wes explained. What does the future hold for Apex Cycles LLC, for Wes, Rachel and five-year-old son Race? “We really want to finish our own custom projects!” both said spontaneously. “But the bikes keep coming and going, and we’re often in the shop after dark, trying to keep up. We’ll get to our projects someday.” Rachel’s work-in-progress is her BMW R51/3; Wes has visions of stuffing a big-pipe, big-valve BMW 70HP-plus 1978 R100S motor into a feather-light BMW R80ST frame. Apex will consider taking in nearly any European brand for repairs and custom work. Apex is a specialty boutique motorcycle works, and their hallmark is custom retro-conversions—making newer stuff look old, and make everything run and work like it should. “We’re about attention to detail, and doing it right the first time. We stand by our work, and satisfaction is guaranteed.” Wes added. “I love to get a commission that requires balancing and blueprinting an engine, doing custom frame work, bracing and removing unneeded frame parts; I like the bare-bones look of a custom – an engine, wheels, a seat and handlebars – because less is more, and lines are all-important. If you’re considering jumping into the vintage, repop, retroconversion or older daily-rider world; if you’re jonesing for the familiar valve-clatter, vigorous four-stroke bark, the smooth and slower-steering that is the hallmark of these venerable and lovely machines Rachel and Wes can help you get started. Or they can help you get the bike finished, finally! “We live it; it’s not just work, it’s not just a job. It’s who we are and what we do it as a family. We hope all our customers come to trust Apex Cycles and will pass the word on to others.” Apex Cycles LLC is located at: 210 Fox Fire Trail, Ellijay, GA 30536. what if?

What if you woke up one day in a very unusual world where all the surroundings, sounds, smells, visions and all things you are so very familiar with seem to have vanished? It’s not like you just went to sleep and never woke up; it’s more akin possibly to the feeling of confusion and uncertainty that one would experience after consuming some smoke, two bottles of Jack, and a 12-pack. (Not that I am promoting the use of drugs or alcohol—but it’s always worked well for me!) So now that I have established a mysterious and somewhat vague stage for you to see my play on, I will open the show with the lost but entertaining art of illusion. Magic if you will. Prevarication—smoke and mirrors or worse. This is what makes you wonder if magic is real. When you look at the sky and you know it’s blue: you have a pretty valid, cognizant, and stable realization of your knowledge regarding your surroundings. If someone hands you a baseball and you know it’s a baseball, but the person handing it to you swears that it is a pickup truck; you know for certain the one of two possible things have happened. One: You are hallucinating (see toxicology disclaimer above) or Two: Someone is trying to blow smoke up your butt. Why you ask am I wasting both of our valuable time and sanity with my reeling diatribe about some person place or thing that I have not yet revealed to you, the dedicated reader of this column whom deserves a sane and comprehensive explanation as to what the Hell I’m talking about. That’s just how I roll bitches! If it walks like a Duck there’s a very strong possibility that someone has handed you a Goose. It’s very rare that I receive any mail here in the trailer park. This fact due to the very careful screening of incoming transmittals by management and staff for the covert gleaning of the intended recipient’s monthly welfare or disability check. This isn’t redolent of the very obvious & careful search of letters and packages that a person would receive in a Correctional Facility; it’s just a sneaky way to see what’s up with your neighbors and occasionally profit through conversion (read: accidental loss) of that particular person’s money. Because I do not get any of that sort of benefit, I am usually not the target of the alleged ‘inspection’ that I am discussing. But once again I digress. One day when I was certain that the sky

was blue and the grass was green I retrieved my mail from the park office. Along with all those usual bills that I don’t pay there was an interesting item which I was not familiar with and had never seen the likes of in my life. Addressed to my legal name and address was a letter (well actually not a letter) informing me that I had to pay a “Fine” for running a red light. Ok I finally gave away the plot. I had gotten what is commonly called a Red Light Camera Ticket. … This as a fairly official looking document and some people may actually be persuaded to send away $158.00 to an address somewhere in the state of Ohio. Wait … I thought we were in Florida. Oh silly me, I must have been befuddled or no—I haven’t been drinking—so obviously there’s something wrong with this picture. After carefully examining the document I learned that there are a few options available to the recipient. Two of the options are just pay it although there is an option to download an affidavit from the web. This affidavit allows the lucky recipient of this scam to rat-out the person driving (your) car so that the perpetrators of this debacle can attempt to collect the money from that person instead of you. (In my case I wasn’t driving the car at the time, but I’m not into ratting folks out.) So it’s off to the Clerk of the Court to see about setting a court date. I hand the ‘ticket’ to the man behind the counter and he does the usual ‘looking up of the records’ and then informs me that there is NO traffic violation against my DL number. Ok “so what’s this thing here that I have in my hand” I had to ask. “Oh you got to call the number on the back of this ticket to set a hearing.” “What? So now it’s a ticket, but YOU can’t set a court date?” WTF? Further examination of the document didn’t reveal a phone number, but it did have a return coupon to pay the fine if you want to call it that and in small print on the back you have the option of setting a hearing by mailing the item back to the very same address in Ohio. Does this mean that I have to go to traffic court in Ohio? Let’s hope not. So what IS this thing that has no official title? Yes it exists because it’s a piece of paper but yet it only lives within itself according to the Courts. Additional research yielded interesting facts regarding this particular type of citation. Some of the facts are a little hard to believe since they are not in harmony with the Constitution of the United States or the state of Florida. Some jurisdictions are removing the cameras altogether while in one South Florida county a Judge has ruled the tickets unconstitutional dismissing the ‘charges’ upon their face. If a person is dumb enough to believe that there exists a positive to this sort of ‘enforcement’ (other than the fact that the privately owned companies who operate these cameras are making billions), then those people should leave the recreational intoxicants alone for a while. There is a class action suit here in Florida that will make these scam artists pay back anyone that was duped into just paying the fine but until these cameras are all dumped into the sea where they belong, rest assured that “Big Brother is Watching.” Do set a court date however: I attended Traffic Court once and the judge in that venue was not a big fan of these programs. He would reduce the fine if you want to call it that significantly for a no contest plea and the entire fiasco would be forgotten. Because there are no points issued against your license in these cases, I would suspect that the Insurance Lobby would either call for points to be issued or to have the cameras abolished. So should the city for that matter, since their take of this scam is miniscule in comparison to what the operators are making. “It is what it is” is all that comes to mind now. So until next month, “Speed safely and smile for the camera”!

Spyke & Mike Words of Wisdom Hot diggity dog my BTR friends, it’s March and to bikers that means Daytona time! Last year Mike and I took the long way from the west coast through the forest ending up in Flagler Beach at John and Karen’s shanty on the inter-coastal. Mike and I have ridden side by side and many miles with them over the years, and we enjoy their company every chance we get. The extra-long road trip gave us plenty of time to think about what only we bikers understand and why ‘saddle time’ is so important to our sanity. At the last gas stop along the way, we take a well-deserved break and begin our conversation. Here’s a short list of his long ramblings with my interjections commenting on his interpretations, when necessary. Sitting down and leaning back against the canopy support, Mike starts with, “All I keep thinking about is how four wheels moves my body, but two wheels moves my soul. Hear me out Spyke, I can always forget about the tragedies in my life when my knees are in the breeze and whatever is ailing me always seems to get better in the wind. This BTR gig is my reason why we work to ride and ride to work!” I squawk, “You don’t work! I do all the work. You just chauffeur me around on the Fat Bird. Take this trip to Daytona for example. Your job just consists of driving us over and parking the scoot on Main St., the Iron Horse, or Destination Daytona. Then you hang out with your friends, drink cold ones, people watch, and listen to music. I on the other hand, have to sign autographs, open beers, kiss all the girls, and pose with every Tom, Dick, and Sally for their Kodak moment. And this goes on nonstop until you fire up the scoot and we pull away. Only to repeat the procedure next time we stop somewhere else.” Mike babbles on, “I know Spyke, but someone has to drive! Plus we know that if life throws us a curve, we lean into it and understand why a dog sticks his head out the window. Also, the reason why bikers enjoy eating bugs.” I interject, “Hell yeah! Look who you’re talking to; a biker bird. I’m all about being in the wind and getting some bugs! I think the midnight ones taste the best!” Mike looks over to the side of the building and eyes some people gathering around a scoot with the seat off. He blurts out, “Saddlebags

can never hold everything you want, but they can hold everything you need, until you break down. Also, I know from experience that if you can’t get your ride going with a bungee cord, duct tape, or wire ties it has to be serious. Plus, everyone should practice wrenching on their own bike because biker boots are not made for walking.” I cackle, “There are no boots on this bird, I’ve got wings and most motorcycle problems are caused by the nut that’s connecting the handlebars.” Mike chuckles, “Yeah I resemble that statement. I got lucky when I finally did break down, I knew a great mechanic who let me watch without charging for it.” I interject, “Ahhh yes Mike, had Steve at Iron Horse Cycles charged you all those times you would have paid him double.” “Well Spyke, just like this day, a good ride can clear your mind, restore your faith in what you believe, and use up a lot of gas!” I come back, “And here’s a few that you need to remember. Please stop leading a pack of bikers if you don’t know where you’re going, it only pisses them off and makes you responsible for the first round at the next stop. When you do start riding faster than anyone else, it only ensures that we’ll be riding alone. Last but not least, if we need to get somewhere before sundown, you just can’t stop at every watering hole.” Mike yells out, “Seems like we’ve both hit the nail on the head with these biker words of wisdom.” I cackle again, “Yeah, but I always hit the nail on the head on my first try!” “I know Spyke, sometimes it takes me a full tank of gas and a little bit of shut eye to make me think straight and swing straight. Speaking of which, give me a few moments to check out my inner eyelids before fueling up.” Mike dozes off for a few minutes. Then suddenly over the loudspeaker the attendant blurts out, “Hey you with the bird on pump two. This ain’t no rest area! You’re holding up the line!” Mike rolls over and mumbles, “Good thing I got enough gas to get to the next station. Let’s make like a tire and hit the road!” With that said he picks me up off the pump guard and plops me behind the wind screen. Mike then gets my wings in the wind and the Fat Bird’s wheels down the road … across the street to another gas station! SPYKE

One of the greatest feelings in the world is when I let out the clutch and the power of my bike’s motor is applied to the rear wheel, and away I go! Having the freedom to just hit the road and go with the wind blowing through my hair, is just an incredible rush. It’s like all of the cares of the world have fallen behind, and there is nothing but promise before me, so onward I roll. The best rides are those when I find myself “in the moment,” just kicking back, enjoying where I am and forgetting the world! I have to admit, being in the wind is usually all I need to “fix” my day, but sometimes I foolishly carry some heavy burdens into the saddle. Maybe I’m tense about work, maybe about a relationship, or perhaps there is just

too much month at the end of my paycheck. I can get all caught up in FEAR, False Evidence Appearing Real, and forget about all the good in my life. I have to remember that in most cases, fear is nothing more than a bad lie! When I’m on the bike, all I have to do is take a look around at the beauty that has been created for us to enjoy. It really helps put things in perspective. Did you know that one study found that of all the things people worry about, only about 7% of them can be changed by worrying? The other 93% of things that folks worry about can’t be dealt with until the last moment, so why waste time worrying? Why waste a good ride worrying about stuff that may not even happen? Do you realize that some folks aren’t happy unless they are worrying about something? Why not chill out and become part of this great creation? In the Bible, in Matthew 6:31, we are told “Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now, and don’t get worked up

about what may or may not happen tomorrow. God will help you deal with whatever hard things come up when the time comes.” If I truly believe this, I have nothing to fear. After all, who wants to believe in a lie? We can just trust in God, listen for his voice, and follow His lead, He’s got us! When you get on your bike decide in advance that you won’t worry about anything; then just hang on and enjoy the beautiful world He has made for us. Maybe you’ll even decide to listen to some good music, other than the sweet sound of your pipes rumbling. Let me suggest a song, “Don’t Worry, Be Happy.” It will make you smile and remind you that God really does have us, and because He loves us He isn’t about to turn us loose! There’s no safer place to be, and fear is simply something to forget! Fearlessly In the Wind, Denny Dingler
