Two-year-old Lilly Bunn is a very happy little girl who has endured many struggles in her young life. At two-months-old she was diagnosed with Biliary Atresia; a life-threatening condition in infants where bile becomes trapped in the ducts causing bile buildup and ultimately damages the liver. On December 6, 2013, Lilly received a new liver, and with the transplant came more adversities and hospital visits. She has to take anti-rejection medications and has her blood drawn at least every two weeks, sometimes more often. Recently, Lilly’s body has begun to reject her liver and she has to undergo monthly IVIG infusions to boost her immune system. With all of these procedures come extensive costs. Children’s Organ Transplant Association (COTA) is the source of hope for the Bunn family. “The Children’s Organ Transplant Association helps children and young adults who need a life-saving transplant by providing fundraising assistance and family support.” • COTA does not charge a transplant family or patient for its services • Every dollar raised in honor of COTA’s patients is used for transplant related expenses • COTA funds are available for a patient’s lifetime for almost any transplant related expense So here’s the call to action biker community: Lilly Bunn needs our help to make COTA funds available
for her medical care the rest of her life. Any money raised for Lilly’s medical costs will go directly to COTA in her honor. The goal for the Bunn family is $50,000, so if you have the means to donate to the cause please do; if not, you can volunteer your time or services to the fundraising team to help the Bunn family reach their targeted goal. Also, prayers and well wishes work wonders. For more information to get involved please call Rhonda Miller at 404-6979552 or email webinfo@cota.org. Let’s all help reach the goal of $50,000 and put a long lasting smile on The Bunn Family. Thank You, Born To Ride. We received a note from Lilly’s Grandmother: I wanted to thank you for putting our flyer in your magazine. I saw the flyer and was very heart happy. Little Miss Lilly is in the hospital this week, and my fear is we will eventually be doing another transplant. The only positive thing about this ordeal is that I have met wonderful people like yourself. Thank you again, Rhonda Miller

THE CREEPER
Imagine a typical scene from a nature-Riding along a suburban street, you approach a slowmoving car. You would like to pass, but the driver keeps speeding up and slowing down, causing you to delay that action After following the creeper for several blocks, you become frustrated and decide to accelerate by. As soon as you pull out to pass the creeper, the driver makes a sudden left turn into a driveway, leaving you no room to stop or swerve. Strategy: The car’s erratic pace should have tipped you off that the driver was searching for something (a street address, perhaps) and that her attention was elsewhere rather than on surrounding traffic. Evaluating the situation, you should have predicted that the driver might turn or stop suddenly. Your best strategy in a situation like this is to separate yourself from the hazard. You could have dropped back at least two seconds. If you choose to pass, do so only after clearly establishing contact with the driver, preferably after receiving a hand signal from her. Never pass at an intersection or other traffic situation where the car could turn in front of you. For more information go to www.msf-usa.org

Route 66--the fabled ribbon of asphalt and concrete still winds its way across the country from Chicago to L.A. And it has also wound its way into the very soul of America. Although superseded in the 1970s by the Interstate freeways, the magic and mystic of the Mother Road has never died. Within the pages of the superbly illustrated book is a colorful illustrated history of the road and its landmarks of the famed RT 66. Put that together with Jim Bush’s story of devotion and passion as he has dedicated a true epic of ink to the legendary RT 66 on his body to show tribute for all to see. We at Born to Ride are thankful and excited to tell both sides of the story. ABOUT THE BOOK: It started in the heartland and originally ended in Los Angeles (not, contrary to myth, at the ocean). It carried truckers crossing the country, Okies fleeing the Dust Bowl, vacationers seeking the sun. It was Americas Main Street, the Mother Road, the Will Rogers Highway, and, at its dangerous curves, Bloody 66. Get your kicks on Route 66 with this wonderfully illustrated tribute to the bestloved highway in this car-loving nation. Michael Witzel shares his expertise and wealth of personal, archive, collector, and contributing photographer images in these pages, offering a nostalgic tour of the charms and oddities of this road through American cultural history. Starting in Chicago and running to Santa Monica, this book highlights the sights along the highway with historic and current BTR 12 | BORNTORIDE.COM

photos in then-and-now pairings, and includes Route 66 postcards, road signs, trinkets, maps, brochures, and advertisements. Here we see Route 66 as it was in its heyday and as it is now, the neon glamour of yesterday versus the ghost towns of today. Witzel and his wife, Gyvel Young-Witzel, recount the highways history, its role in popular culture, and its demise, as well as the individual stories of famous sights. Several profiles of those with close ties to the Mother Road, including the woman who played Ruthie Joad in the The Grapes of Wrath film, are included. ABOUT THE AUTHORS: Michael Witzel and Gyvel Young Witzel are some of the best known American car culture historians. Michael is the author of Route 66 Remembered as well as a dozen other pop culture histories, including with co-author Gyvel, Soda Pop! and The Sparkling Story of Coca-Cola. Michael Witzel and Gyvel Young-Witzel reside in Austin, Texas. About one minute into listening to Jim Bush’s bike and tattoo story I knew it traveled beyond the norm, if norm is ever used in the world of tattooing and custom bikes. The Bolingbrook, Illinois resident is a walking and talking monument for a major slice of American culture. He’s covered, figuratively speaking, with nearly 2,500 miles of ink stretching from Chicago to Los Angeles. To be specific, he’s paved in the history of the famous Route 66. Route 66 is America’s first transcontinental

roadway and the subject of countless stories, books, and songs -- not forgetting that famous 1960s TV show of the same name. Before we head down that road, a background check on Jim reveals that while he’s an engineer by training he’s an expert in “Loss Prevention” for commercial and industrial Fortune 500 companies. He adds, “It’s a career that pretty much will put you to sleep. It involves engineering work for an insurance company that insures factories against
business interruption.” Jim says its best to leave that explanation as it stands without delving further, and I agreed! My interest was his ink and bike story. The ink motoring down his arms is an incredible profusion of indelible images. It all started years ago when Jim decided to get his first tat, something patriotic. “I was just going to get a little American eagle and that was going to be it.” He began researching

through all the images but here’s some highlights. On Jim’s left arm there’s a turquoise ’55 Chevy with a license plate that reads 2448 that commemorates Route 66’s total mileage. The Standard Oil gas station attendant on his right arm is the image of his grandfather. “That filling station opened in the early 1950s on Route 66. It’s still there, owned by my family. My grandfather’s sons still work there with my cousins.” And if you look carefully you’ll find a Ferris wheel on Chicago’s Navy pier. Walking up to that Ferris wheel, Larry has drawn the figures of Jim, his wife, and his youngest son. Jim’s art is amazing but Jim also has an award show winning Black Pan, but that is another story for a future issue. Do you have a memory of Route 66? Tell us about your Route 66 story. Women’s World Ready to Live the EQ LifeStyle
turn to really live your life, time to see and start experiencing life in a whole new way. Time to experience the EQ LifeStyle! Living the EQ LifeStyle is living like others only dare to dream! -- Hayley B. Colina I walk the talk; I don’t just spout a bunch of motivational hoopla at you. I want to awaken you to a life that is so incredibly fascinating where you will scream “I cannot believe how much time I wasted simply existing!” I want to hear you scream in utter delight as you discover the person inside you who you did not know existed and is so unstoppable! My biggest reward is seeing you step out of your comfort zone and watching how strong you become with every step. Observing you melt away your excuses and doubts every time you experience another step out of your comfort zone is rewarding. My passion has always been to see women succeed, and my recent cancer experience has taken my passion and purpose to a whole new dimension. The cancer diagnosis was actually a blessing in disguise. Last year I was diagnosed with lung cancer. I haven’t smoked in over 18 years so it is not a smoker’s cancer: it can happen to anyone. Last year, I faced the darkest moment in my life not knowing if I would survive and/or for how long. However, that experience was also an incredible gift. I know it sounds crazy to many but it is true. Allow me to explain. The cancer experience opened up my world like an invincible fish living in a tiny dark pond that can now swim fearlessly in the huge sea. After my diagnosis, life took on a whole new level of meaning. Like many of you, I also believed all the things people go around saying: like “life is too short, “To Live is the rarest experience in the world! Many people dream big, blah, blah, blah. However, it hit the depths of my merely exist.” Are you living or are you simply existing? WHAT IF?
What if you woke up one day in a very unusual world where all the surroundings, sounds, smells, visions and all things you are so very familiar with seem to have vanished? It’s not like you just went to sleep and never woke up; it’s more akin possibly to the feeling of confusion and uncertainty that one would experience after consuming some smoke, two bottles of Jack, and a 12-pack. (Not that I am promoting the use of drugs or alcohol—but it’s always worked well for me!) So now that I have established a mysterious and somewhat vague stage for you to see my play on, I will open the show with the lost but entertaining art of illusion. Magic if you will. Prevarication—smoke and mirrors or worse. This is what makes you wonder if magic is real. When you look at the sky and you know it’s blue: you have a pretty valid, cognizant, and stable realization of your knowledge regarding your surroundings. If someone hands you a baseball and you know it’s a baseball, but the person handing it to you swears that it is a pickup truck; you know for certain the one of two possible things have happened. One: You are hallucinating (see toxicology disclaimer above) or Two: Someone is trying to blow smoke up your butt. Why you ask am I wasting both of our valuable time and sanity with my reeling diatribe about some person place or thing that I have not yet revealed to you, the dedicated reader of this column whom deserves a sane and comprehensive explanation as to what the Hell I’m talking about. That’s just how I roll bitches! If it walks like a Duck there’s a very strong possibility that someone has handed you a Goose. It’s very rare that I receive any mail here in the trailer park. This fact due to the very careful screening of incoming transmittals by management and staff for the covert gleaning of the intended recipient’s monthly welfare or disability check. This isn’t redolent of the very obvious & careful search of letters and packages that a person would receive in a Correctional Facility; it’s just a sneaky way to see what’s up with your neighbors and occasionally profit through conversion (read: accidental loss) of that particular person’s money. Because I do not get any of that sort of benefit, I am usually not the target of the alleged ‘inspection’ that I am discussing. But once again I digress. One day when I was certain that the sky
BTR 36 | BORNTORIDE.COM
was blue and the grass was green I retrieved my mail from the park office. Along with all those usual bills that I don’t pay there was an interesting item which I was not familiar with and had never seen the likes of in my life. Addressed to my legal name and address was a letter (well actually not a letter) informing me that I had to pay a “Fine” for running a red light. Ok I finally gave away the plot. I had gotten what is commonly called a Red Light Camera Ticket. … This as a fairly official looking document and some people may actually be persuaded to send away $158.00 to an address somewhere in the state of Ohio. Wait … I thought we were in Florida. Oh silly me, I must have been befuddled or no—I haven’t been drinking—so obviously there’s something wrong with this picture. After carefully examining the document I learned that there are a few options available to the recipient. Two of the options are just pay it although there is an option to download an affidavit from the web. This affidavit allows the lucky recipient of this scam to rat-out the person driving (your) car so that the perpetrators of this debacle can attempt to collect the money from that person instead of you. (In my case I wasn’t driving the car at the time, but I’m not into ratting folks out.) So it’s off to the Clerk of the Court to see about setting a court date. I hand the ‘ticket’ to the man behind the counter and he does the usual ‘looking up of the records’ and then informs me that there is NO traffic violation against my DL number. Ok “so what’s this thing here that I have in my hand” I had to ask. “Oh you got to call the number on the back of this ticket to set a hearing.” “What? So now it’s a ticket, but YOU can’t set a court date?” WTF? Further examination of the document didn’t reveal a phone number, but it did have a return coupon to pay the fine if you want to call it that and in small print on the back you have the option of setting a hearing by mailing the item back to the very same address in Ohio. Does this mean that I have to go to traffic court in Ohio? Let’s hope not. So what IS this thing that has no official title? Yes it exists because it’s a piece of paper but yet it only lives within itself according to the Courts. Additional research yielded interesting facts regarding this particular type of citation. Some of the facts are a little hard to believe since they are not in harmony with the Constitution of the United States or the state of Florida. Some jurisdictions are removing the cameras altogether while in one South Florida county a Judge has ruled the tickets unconstitutional dismissing the ‘charges’ upon their face. If a person is dumb enough to believe that there exists a positive to this sort of ‘enforcement’ (other than the fact that the privately owned companies who operate these cameras are making billions), then those people should leave the recreational intoxicants alone for a while. There is a class action suit here in Florida that will make these scam artists pay back anyone that was duped into just paying the fine but until these cameras are all dumped into the sea where they belong, rest assured that “Big Brother is Watching.” Do set a court date however: I attended Traffic Court once and the judge in that venue was not a big fan of these programs. He would reduce the fine if you want to call it that significantly for a no contest plea and the entire fiasco would be forgotten. Because there are no points issued against your license in these cases, I would suspect that the Insurance Lobby would either call for points to be issued or to have the cameras abolished. So should the city for that matter, since their take of this scam is miniscule in comparison to what the operators are making. “It is what it is” is all that comes to mind now. So until next month, “Speed safely and smile for the camera!”

Train Yourself to be Sensitive to the Voice and Promptings of the Holy Spirit
While participating with my HSMM chapter in our annual fundraiser, my wife and I were parking cars in a large pasture at the NHRA Southern Nationals. After using my set of keys to run to the truck, the Holy Spirit spoke to my spirit and prompted me to retrieve the keys from her. I knew the Holy Spirit’s voice but was busy parking cars and failed to immediately obey His promptings. Time passed and I asked for the keys back, but they were gone. Apparently, they fell out of her pocket in the vast field of grass where 3,000 plus cars and trucks were parked. We had no idea where they could be. We searched BTR 44 | BORNTORIDE.COM
but turned up nothing. The next day, I went back to continue parking cars at the race. I searched the fields again but no keys. As I walked alone and searched, the Holy Spirit again begin to speak to my heart and told me that my wife was not the issue nor were the keys, but the issue was the fact that He had spoken to my heart and I failed to immediately obey. He stressed to me the importance of immediately recognizing and obeying the smallest of promptings by the Holy Spirit; you never know what the promptings are about and what the ramifications of not obeying can bring. Keys are replaceable
but had the voice of the Holy Spirit been about something of a life or death nature, then the outcome could have been detrimental. The Lesson: Train yourself to be sensitive to the voice and promptings of the Holy Spirit and immediately obey Him in all things. He speaks and leads for a purpose, whether you understand the “why” or not at the time of the leading. Byron “HogDoc” Loyd
