OFF-RAMP DIVER
You are riding along an urban freeway, in the far right lane. Just as you approach an off-ramp, a car in the lane to your left dives in front of you, braking hard to make the offramp at the last possible moment. You have very little room to brake or swerve, and a crash may be imminent. Strategy: When you see an off-ramp ahead, glance around you and evaluate the situation. Do you see any cars around you that might exit? Are you doing anything that might cause other drivers to expect you to exit? Since you are riding along in what is the exit lane, other drivers may assume that you are going to exit as well—an assumption that might affect their movements. Off-ramps (and onramps) are prime locations for vehicular conflicts. When approaching a ramp, it is often a good idea to move out of the exit/entrance lane. Take steps to avoid riding in the blind spots of cars traveling around you. In this situation, the driver might not have known that you were even between him and the exit, if you were in his blind spot.

his is the journey of a lifetime that we all wish we could take, but most of us would never dare attempt it … if a thousand mile journey truly begins with a single step, it is a miracle that Emilio Scotto’s journey ever ended successfully. This mad man’s quest to see the world (I call him mad because he is the only man in existence to ever attempt such a ride), evolved into a history book adventure filled with cannibals, trigger-happy soldiers, anacondas, hallucinations and deathly diseases. Yes, Emilio Scotto’s story is unlike any ever told … until now. Scotto’s adventure began on his eighth birthday when he received a World Atlas. Promptly he announced his plan to make a route that would pass through all the countries of the world, and he named this route the Blue Road One. Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Emilio Scotto began his professional life as a pharmaceutical salesman, but his long-simmering dream to travel the world eventually got the best of him. In 1985 he set out on a motorcycle journey around the

world that would last a record-setting 10 years. At the beginning of this journey, he found himself astride a black 1100 Honda Goldwing motorcycle and the Blue Road One beckoned. The story of how he obtained this Honda Goldwing he calls the Black Princess is comical, yet his determination is inspiring. In 1980, Emilio convinced a dealership to finance this $16,000 motorcycle on a note. As he attempted to pull out of the parking lot, he realized that he had never even saddled a motorcycle before, and immediately dumped it before exiting the dealership. Was this a premonition? What would inspire one to purchases such an elaborate motorcycle for a 500,000 mile journey, that they didn’t even know how to ride? (This was 1980, in Argentina, there were no rider instruction schools and you didn’t purchase a motorcycle for showmanship). Was the calling of Blue Road One his destiny or just plain insanity? Scotto set off on a worldwide journey that would last more than a decade, which eventually landed him in the Guinness Book of World
Records. The only thing that would match the miles traveled would be the list of adventures he

had during the journey. The Longest Ride: My 10-Year 500,000 Mile Motorcycle Journey is Scotto’s story of one man’s unbeatable determination. This thrill ride begins in his native country of Argentina, crosses through Panama into Noriega, Mexico in the midst of an earthquake. Treks even further into Los Angeles where Emilio finds himself dead broke. By chance he meets Muhammad Ali, who gives him fifty dollars. Breaching the Iron Curtain, crossing the Berlin Wall at Checkpoint Charlie, being blessed by the Pope, dodging a tribe of cannibals in Sierra Leone, fleeing Somalia on a freighter—Scotto’s adventures is unbelievable true. His tale of touring the world from Tunisia to Turkey, Petra to Afghanistan, and Yugoslavia to Singapore, is unlike any ever told. this tale. Emilio Scotto literally makes it through uncharted territory in the Amazon Jungle on a Goldwing—this man truly has his own Guardian Angel. This book takes the beatnik way of life to another level. Kerouac’s style and philosophies, that unexplainable yearning for the road can be identified here, but Scotto’s mind-boggling courage and faith cannot be compared. The Longest Ride effortlessly spans the globe to tell the story of one amazing man’s journey to discover the world for himself. The story-telling style places the reader in the seat with Scotto and the accompanying color photographs makes this one of the most electrifying chronicles I’ve read in years! Ride for America
Patriotic motorcyclists to honor America’s fallen and support the American Legion Legacy Scholarship Fund. The American Legion Riders of Loganville Post 233 announce the 17th Annual Ride for America. An escorted motorcycle ride that promotes Americanism each Memorial Day and raises money to help send the children of fallen veterans to college through the American Legion Legacy Scholarship Fund. This year’s ride will be on Monday, May 25, 2015. For 17 years Ride for America has stood out as a Memorial Day tradition for many Riders in Georgia. Riders start gathering early and then a police escorted ride starts at 9:30 AM from the American Legion Post in Loganville and winds through the country side on a 38-mile track to the historic town of Madison, GA. On this route riders will pass many patriotic Americans waving flags in support. Hundreds of enthusiastic men, women, and children roll out the red carpet for the bikers, and all join together in the beautiful town park to participate in the ceremony marking Memorial Day. The riders then return to the Loganville Legion Post for food and more fellowship in honor of this day. At $10.00 for a rider and $5.00 for a passenger, Ride for America is less BTR 14 | BORNTORIDE.COM
expensive than many other charity rides, and is sure to provide an affordable day of thoughtful entertainment while also honoring those who sacrificed all for our great nation. Why do so many gather to spend this holiday Monday together? Because they all want to show the families of servicemen who have paid for the freedom that we all enjoy today, the American Biker is no exception. We ride on Memorial Day for many reasons but the three big ones are: For Charity: The money raised during Ride for America will primarily benefit our main charity the American Legion Legacy Scholarship Fund and other veteran’s causes. For Honor: We ride for fathers, mothers, grandparents, brothers, sisters, comradesin-arms … no matter the conflict, we honor their sacrifice for our nation. For Fun: Our camaraderie comes with food, raffles, t-shirts and lots of family friendly fun stuff going on. Currently, 106,000 American Legion Riders meet in over a thousand chapters in every domestic department and in at least three foreign countries. Riders in all states have escorted military units returning home from combat tours overseas, conducted massive cross-country fundraising events
for wounded warriors from all services, and have raised millions of dollars for countless local, state and national charities.

FAMILY OWNED & OPERATED “40 YEARS STRONG” 1975-2015
Women’ Susan Hurst – Writer, Author, Publisher and member of the Born To Ride Family! I was asked to write about a person who many of you have met—or at least—have read her articles here in Born To Ride. Coming out of my writing hibernation in order to complete this honor for Born To Ride, I am thrilled to share with you a story about Susan Hurst and some good news she’s working on this year! Susan has been a professional writer for many, many years. Her motorcycling life started over 35 years ago in upstate New York. She is probably one of the most humble and creative people I have ever met. Thankfully, she agreed to meet up with me at The White Elephant in Englewood to share what she’s been up to! Sitting on the deck, sipping on a sweet iced tea, I waited patiently for her to walk through the door. As if the timing couldn’t have been more perfect, in walks this tall woman with long blonde hair, who happily greets people she passes as she comes onto the deck. An easy smile greets me along with a powerful hug and sincere thanks for my being here. Just having a few seconds with her, I’m already sensing a good interview is going to commence as well as a new friendship! How did you come on board with Born To Ride? Smiling and clapping her hands with joy, she said, “Oh my! That was many years ago—I think 2007 was when I met Ron Galletti at an event in Bradenton. My husband, Johnny Martin, saw Ron taking video and photos throughout this event. Johnny made it a point to let Ron know I was a professional writer and published author and that Ron needed to meet me. I was embarrassed, I must admit, but honored to meet Ron since I was a devoted reader of Born To Ride magazine. We spent some BTR 18 | BORNTORIDE.COM

I wasn’t going to stop something that brought me great joy just because people weren’t taking the time to get to know me or spend time with me in order to know who I really was. For many—especially women—I was a threat to them.” In 1990, taking her passion for writing and her desire to spread a positive light on women motorcyclists, she wrote her first book, “Women and Motorcycling.” It was a collection of stories, photos, and demographic information about women motorcyclists. From that endeavor, Susan embarked on a second publication, “Women and Motorcycling – The Early Years.” This was a book about the women pioneers of the early 1900s. “My second book was a best seller. I had it reprinted six times because I couldn’t keep up with the demand!” In time talking together about my background addition to selling out of these books, Susan and my two books that I wrote and published. But truth be told, and said, “Yes, that was me!” The guy just she knows her stuff and knows it well! shook his head and said, “I can’t believe Sipping her drink and contemplating my that you rode that here. I have met some fascinating people and am always looking forward to meeting new friends! I take my role very seriously with Born To Ride because our standards are very high. We set the bar to a point where many try to reach it but can’t. I love my Born To Ride family and am proud to be a part of their successes!” The good news Susan enthusiastically shared with me is her new book! Sitting at the edge of her chair, she animatedly explained, “I’m very excited to be writing my third book! This one is called, ‘Women and Motorcycling – Past, Present, and Future.’ I’m currently looking for stories and photos of women motorcyclists from all walks of life. Susan politely listened to their stories and was thankful to them for sharing. She is a remarkable woman. On the outskirts of Watkinsville, Georgia, a quaint southern town just south of Athens and UGA, Boxerworks-Service , led by charismatic Nathan Mende and his team of dedicated craftsmen are turning heads as they turn out BeemerGlides, fully-functional retro-‘whatever old style bikes you would like.’ Born in Teaneck, NJ in the late ‘40s, Nathan’s father worked part-time at a local garage, wherein resided eight Slash Two BMWs; the owner, Nathan’s dad and six compadres would annually ship all eight bikes to a remote location, fly out and have a nice rideabout home. In the middle ‘60s he came upon a 1965 BMW R69S, the then top-of-the-line BMW motorrad (i.e. motorized wheels) with a stunning 46 BTR 26 | BORNTORIDE.COM
hp. Nathan used his $500 nest egg and borrowed the remaining $300 to purchase the machine. Without realizing it, Nathan’s formative years branded him with the BMW marque. Accordingly, he took employment at Hawk Cycles BMW motorcycle dealer in Athens OH—and later, Freeman Cycles in Beverly, Massachusetts, said to be the original BMW motorcycle dealer in the US. Nathan left the northeast to begin his adventures in 1967. After working around the world in the oil industry, Nathan moved to Vermont for a time; despite the wicked winters, he was a year-‘round motorcyclist. Next stopover was Charleston, SC, where he began a part-time BMW repair business in his garage. Six years later, middle
Georgia became his home and again his BMW repair, resto, and customization trade took off. The original Boxerworks-Service was in a building on Nathan’s many rural acres and later moved into Watkinsville. The current business is in a new building on the Greenville Highway. The early Georgia days included working as a BMW motorrad tech at the Athens BMW auto dealer, who became a ‘dual dealer,’ handling both auto and bikes. The dealer sent Nathan to become certified as a technician, while at the same time BMW Corporate was suing him for using ‘BMW’ in the name of his home-based business, hence the name-change to ‘BoxerworksService,’ a modification Nathan never

regretted. The dual-dealership did not last, and Boxerworks-Service became Nathan’s full-time pursuit; the first employee was hired. In 2005, the soon-to-be-legendary Dean Graham joined Boxerworks. Dean was a BMW owner with little BMW experience but deep familiarity with a variety of the needed skills, including electrician. His motorcyclewiring handiwork could be displayed in an art gallery—welding, pipe-fitting, gas and diesel mechanicals and more. Today, Nathan says one of his biggest concerns is keeping Dean challenged; Dean builds motors, both stockers and full-blown BMW Airhead Boxer hot-rod mills, an anomaly in the Beemer world. He does the finishing work on a ‘Glide bike after all the parts are in place and is the fussy drivability quality-control guy. When a ‘Glide leaves Watkinsville, the chassis and running gear are better than Spandau (the Berlin factor) ever imagined. While BMWs and other Euro-marques are BoxerworksService’s specialty they will repair virtually any make of motorcycle. Where did the concept for the BeemerGlide arise? About 10 years ago, BMW restoguru Todd Rasmussen built the first BeemerGlide; Nathan was able to buy it from Rasmussen, whereupon his team disassembled it, reengineered many parts and components with an eye to making it easier to manufacture in numbers. The
ability to sell ‘Glides in kit-form was also an objective. The ‘Glide is now designed as a single multi-style frame that supports several retro-styles including the look of the wartime Harley-Davidson WLA. The U.S. Army also commissioned H-D to design and build an opposed flat-twin, shaft-drive motorcycle, the H-D XA for the benefit of the maintenance-free shaft drive. One thousand were produced, few survive. The ‘Glide pays homage to this small piece of U.S. Army history. About this time, a British subject, Barbadian James Vann, saw a picture of the BeemerGlide and something ignited within. A middle-aged fellow, James migrated to the US and came by for a visit with Mr. Mende; “I can sell these things. I can build them, also.” Before this pivotal event, Boxerwork’s creative division did a diverse bit of everything one-off but did not move into the realm of really attractive and emotionallymoving restoration-conversions that can be practical, relatively easy, and economical. ‘Glides can be both repaired with OEM BMW parts, copious aftermarket alternatives, and the weaker components of 1970s engineering. Nathan, himself a skilled just-abouteverything operator/technician, and his team of overlapping specialists do all the
work in-house with these exceptions: The original BMW frame goes to the contractor that built the ‘Glide frame-jig; two-thirds of the fame is retained, including the fork-head and down tubes that are stamped with the VIN. New tubing and gussets are added to lower the seat, and accept a variety of fenders, tanks, seats, shocks, and such. The only other contracted work for a ‘Glide is paint and upholstery. James is project manager, responsible for specs, progress, sheet-metal, and final assembly. Dean does motors to spec, from mild 55 hp-70 hp stockers to full-on streetable carb-breathing two-valve push-rod monsters that have reached over 90 hp. BMW’s Boxer engine has a low torque-to-horsepower ratio—lots of torque in relation peak horsepower, making drivability very pleasant and predicable—and nicely quick while on the power band which includes most of the tach. Are Hayabusas worried? No. However, Bird-riders’ neck, buttocks, arms, eyes, wrists, hands and knee-joints will be painfully worried long before the ‘Glide needs to find a gas station. For the Stoplight Open, get a ‘Glide with Final Drive gears for a sidecar or other lowHP model to enjoy two-gear throttle-only wheelies. Horsepower sells bikes—Torque satisfies riders. Customers can specify a number of retrostyles, including the original BeemerGlide, BORNTORIDE.COM | BTR 27

or an XA that was bobbed after the war, or a Board Track bike might be your desire … or Flat-tracker, Beach Cruiser, Drag Bike or whatever else you and James can imagine. It will certainly be a one—off. ‘Glides all feature blacked-out engine and running gear to keep the focus on the entire aesthetics package and not just the funny-looking motor. The battery is actually the familiar oil tank, and other such mods make the creation match your old memories as you ride around comfortably and reliably on, well, relatively modern hard-parts. describe the term; ‘Airhead’ is the informal name for BMW motorcycles beginning with the original 1923 R32 up to the last fully air-cooled 1995 R100s. Modern Era Airheads cover 1975-1995. Airheads believe in simplicity, thus: “Airheads never break, and when they do, you can fix’em with a pocket knife.” In 1983, BMW began to introduce other engine configurations, none of which were totally reliant on air-flow for engine cooling. Airheads are known for reliability, total parts availability, and ease of maintenance and roadside repairs. But back to you, the erstwhile at-homebuilder: The assembly process for the home-garage builder, who may supply donor components while relying on James to acquire the remainder, is straight-forward. The individual builder can specify how much of the build is done by Boxerworks and then enjoy the thrill of completing a work of moto-art oneself. Even more pleasant will be the total cost of such a build. If a big motor is spec’ed, Boxerwork’s neighbor is a cylinder-head specialist well-
in University of Florida—Blue and Orange colors. The owner bravely rode it daily in Athens, home of arch-rival UGA. Speed Channel personality Dave DeSpain is a near neighbor and relies on Boxerworks-Service to maintain his eclectic fleet. BMW dealers, most of whom no longer work on Airheads, send owners to Boxerworks, which has the full range of special-tools, tech manuals, and memo—and even better, combined decades of experience with these venerable power plants and drive-trains. What’s next? James is collecting parts for a ‘Big Front Disc(s) bike; three new frames are in production, and there are orders to fill, some from Asia. In process is a new swingarm/driveshaft tunnel design using a single shock. Nathan, the face of Boxerworks, wants to change that. James now rides herd on the creative and diverse personalities; “It’s an easy job because we’re really family,” Nathan noted. “I take a month off each year now, to ride the US with my girlfriend.” Mr. Mende rides a Nathanized BMW G/S with

few OEM parts except castings and frame. “I foresee a ‘Glide Rally in 5 or 10 years with over 50 ‘Glides in attendance!” The team (ahem, ‘family’) is cohesive— maintaining and growing both the size and core values of Boxerworks as Nathan backs off his own throttle a bit; “We’re customerfocused, do quality guaranteed work, always come in on budget, communicate with the customer profusely to avoid surprises along the build. Because the best surprise is no surprise on the bill and a big surprise for the owner of a new one-off and personalized ‘Glide.”

Later in the late ’80s, Jim Potter sold the dealership and Billy did his wrenching out of the home again. It would be 13 years until another Harley dealership would come to Albany under another owner. After two different ownerships, the dealership was sold again and moved to Tifton in 2010. Jim had already moved on into the lawn mower and golf cart sales business and was out of the bike business completely but not Billy. A few years after his dad closed, Billy moved into the vacant building that used to house the dealership. He started to develop his reputation once again, not only as one the top 10 shovelhead mechanics in the Nation but also as a builder. He was the only non-dealer mechanic who was invited to work at the Harley dealership during the Sturgis rallies. His experiences at the dealership kept his mechanic ability honed. In 1999, Billy was given the opportunity to be the dealer for the rejuvenated Indian motorcycle; he picked up the Panzer dealership in 2001. During that time he also built custom bikes, chopper, pro-street, and panhead replica bikes along with Harley repairs, until Indian went out of business again in 2003. His involvement with drag-racing began at the Warner Robins drag strip at the All-Harley Drags. For $50 you could get a license to do runs on the track. He built the motor for the bagger he ran down the

track and was asked to compete because his times were better than some of the pros. This started a brief career of racing the dressers he built and raced in the All-Harley Drags circuit. Riding on the way back from Sturgis on his dresser, he stopped at the Truett & Osborne drags in Kansas, one of the oldest motorcycle drag racing competitions in the U.S. He won the “B” class, running in a bracket race. He ran at the Memphis Nationals and many regional drag circuits. He was the runner up in the “FLASH race” (Fastest Legal All Street Harley) at Sturgis, two times. He strapped the FLASH trophy onto his saddle bag with bungee cords and proudly rode by the “big rig” trailers of the pros … and rode home on the same bike he ran in the drags. Billy admits that he was not a very good drag racer. It was the engine he built that developed the power to beat the competition. Billy not only continues to do repairs, but still builds oneof-a-kind” bikes to order. He likes to try some things that no one else wants to try. He is all about making a bike run right, and he doesn’t skimp on costs. The business motto is, “Our reputation is your guarantee.” “It’s my work and reputation that goes out with every bike I build or repair and the pride in doing it right,” says Billy. DESTINATIONS RIDING SEASON IS HERE!
Daytona Bike Week has come and gone and other rallies are taking place this month. RIDING SEASON IS HERE! We are looking forward to our first destination ride this year. It seems like it has been a very long winter. Maybe that is because this is the first winter we have not hosted the Destination Ride in the brutal cold weather of winter. Maybe I have gotten smarter or just plain older and can’t take the cold anymore. My wife seems to think that it is the second option rather than the first! Our April destination ride was the first ride since November. I know that a lot of you do all kinds of maintenance and cleaning and polishing during the off season and I am very jealous. I ride my bike year round and the days that I don’t ride it is because the weather prohibits me. The checkout girls at Food Lion think that I am absolutely crazy when I come pulling in on my way to the office and it is only 26 degrees! I guess what I am trying to do is to find an excuse for the road grime that you might see on my bike. It never fails, but when I have it all clean and take it out it rains, pollen is in the air or perhaps even the love bugs are out. Our first ride this season began at the Country Corner Kitchen located at the corner of Old Hwy 5 and Hwy 382 (2020 Old Highway 5 South) in Ellijay, GA. We traveled by way of back roads to Hiawassee, where we visited Hightower Creek Vineyard. This was a very pleasant ride through some of the back country of North Georgia. Our route took us from Ellijay out Hwy 52 to Dahlonega to Hwy 19 into Cleveland and then onto Hwy 75A, Hwy 17, Hwy 75 and finally Hwy 76 to the winery. The actual travel time of this route is 2 hours and is 88.4 miles. The return trip by way of Hwy 76 all the way from the winery to Ellijay is 68.2 miles—1 hour, 21 minutes.

become “thorns in your sides and pricks in your eyes.” (v. 55)
“Are there attitudes, thought patterns, behaviors, Remember this: “Don’t let small choices, relationships, etc. enemies become big giants.” Tucked away in the book of Joshua, chapter 11, that you possess which God verses 21-22, we discover something life changing. Verse 21: “Joshua cut off the has spoken to you to remove Anakim … Joshua destroyed them utterly with their cities.” Verse 22: “There was none of the Anakims left in the land of the Children of Israel: only in Gaza, in Gath, and in Ashdod, there remained.” God’s instructions to Moses, then passed on to Joshua were to “drive out all the inhabitants of the land.”(Numbers 33:52) God also told Moses that if he did not drive them all out that who was left would BTR 44 | BORNTORIDE.COM
from your life?” Joshua was given the same orders, but we see that Joshua, for some reason, did not drive all the enemies out. In fact, he left some in three places: Gaza, Gath, and Ashdod. Why did he leave enemies in these three cities? Perhaps, he thought these enemies were not important, that
they were insignificant and would cause no further problems. Perhaps, he had friends of friends there … who knows. What we do know is he left enemies of God in those three places: Gaza, Gath, and Ashdod. Fast forward several years and see what we find: From Gaza, Delilah who was instrumental in bringing down Samson. From Gath, Goliath defied the Armies of God. Ashdod was the city where the Ark of the Covenant (God’s Word and Leadership) was held captive. Examine your own life. Are there attitudes, thought patterns, behaviors, choices, relationships, etc., that you possess which God has spoken to you to remove from your life? You have not obeyed yet, thinking they were small and insignificant, causing no trouble. Remember this: “Don’t let small enemies become big giants.”
