Mountain folk have a unique language replete with unlikely terms; Gail Denison and her husband Rob were visiting Gail’s father Kenneth in the North Georgia Mountains one fine day. Kenneth was attempting to mow his grass while it was still damp from the morning dew. As he maneuvered his sizeable riding lawnmower across the side of a steepish hillside, the machine slid sideways, downhill and almost went off the retaining wall. “That big ole’ mower just started ballhootin’ down the hill, and there wasn’t nothin’ I could do to stop it.” Kenneth explained. “Ballhootin’ made us both laugh until tears ran down our legs!” Gail recalled. “It became out new favorite Appalachian word.” After a career in the U.S. Air Force as a BTR 6 | BORNTORIDE.COM

Weapons Specialist, 11 years as a deputy sheriff in Sumter, SC, and some contract work in Columbus, GA, Rob Denison and his lovely wife Gail made the move to Blue Ridge, GA, to open Ballhootin Leathers, a bikers’ store offering highest quality riding garments from Milwaukee Leather, bike accessories from Kuryakyn, and hand-crafted riders’ fashion accessories from local craftspeople in Fannin County. Gail served our country as a military wife, and spent 32 years as a hairdresser. The move from Columbus to Blue Ridge helped Gail and Rob simplify their lives and reduce stress. Gail serves now as Rob’s co-rider while aboard their ’14 H-D StreetGlide Special, and business partner at the Ballhootin’ store. Readers can make the connection between ‘Ballhootin,’ defined as ‘To skid “Our Hides will save your Hide, stop in for the smell of it.” “Tell em’ BTR sent ya.”

that we will make your purchase a positive one with our 100% satisfaction guarantee.” Rob explained the store’s philosophy: “First, a quality product line we can be proud to represent. Second, we stock virtually every size for both women and men, and third, we want to make Ballhootin’ a warm and friendly stopover for riders, both local and visitors.” Refreshments, clean comfort facilities, a social, ‘no-pressure-to-buy-something’ environment, and some really interesting and unique products make Ballhootin’ Leathers a must-stop when passing through Blue Ridge.

or slide, out of control,’ and our everpresent risk that riders and co-riders could find themselves ballhootin’ down the asphalt, sans motorcycle. Competent and responsible riders plan to never, ever crash, and yet still prepare in advance in case that rider is mistaken. Bikers do crash, and taking precautions before the ride, including quality personal protective gear, can make a difference between

months of painful rehab, or the modest financial pain of purchasing a new set of leathers. Both are passionate riders and wanted Ballhootin’ to be a retail store featuring the highest quality riding gear, as well as a warm and friendly social gathering place for bikers. Located on the west side of Blue Ridge GA, on the north side of the Appalachian Highway (GA515/ US76), Ballhootin’ is in the perfect location to greet motorcyclists through their ‘Gateway to the Mountains,’ a twowheel Welcome Center, if you will. Gail and Ron chose Milwaukee Leather’s product line because of the firm’s philosophy of delivering the best quality leather and footwear apparel at reasonable prices for motorcyclists. Made here in the US, in nearby Boone, NC, the line includes vests, jackets, pants, chaps, boots, headgear, gloves and luggage. Milwaukee Leather’s website promises; “Our goal is to provide you with the highest quality leatherwear that you will be proud to wear for years to come. Gail and Rob are working with local clubs, charities and Veterans’ organizations to facilitate fund-raising rides, Poker Runs, and similar actives. The local chapter of the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association (www. combatvet.org) in Blue Ridge benefits from Ballhootin’s support, as well as a local childhood Autism project. Ballhootin’ is located at 1567 Appalachian Highway in Blue Ridge, (706) 258-2869 (N34 50.345 W84 20.309). Gail and Rob are looking forward to meeting new riding friends. Y’all stop by! THE REAR-ENDER

It’s the soundtrack to every motorcyclist’s nightmare: you’re sitting astride your bike at an intersection, patiently waiting for the red light to change to green, when you hear the screech of tires. Next you’re flying through the air and into the intersection. You’ve just been rear-ended by an inattentive driver who was too busy dialing his cell phone to notice you stopped at the red light. Strategy: Remember, even to attentive drivers, motorcycles are difficult to see—especially at night. Remain aware of the fact that drivers approaching an intersection may not see you. Frequently check your mirrors to monitor traffic approaching from the rear, keeping an eye out for fast-moving traffic approaching from behind. Flash your brake light. If you do notice a car speeding toward you, move to one side or another to get out of its way. Don’t shift into neutral when stopped at an intersection. Keep your bike in gear, so you can quickly escape if a dangerous situation arises. For more info www.msf-usa.org

July 4th is an exciting opportunity for us to celebrate as a nation. Since declaring our independence we have all had the freedom and liberty to celebrate so many things. But I want us to remember that our freedom was not free. It came at grave sacrifices of life, family and much more. We honor and appreciate those who have served and/or are serving. TO me, they are, besides GOD, our #1 heroes every day we are given the opportunity to speak, carry weapons, love our GOD, pursue our independent careers, and more. While independent wars were fought for varying conclusion, this one was for our FREEDOM.

Also, it is NEVER best to turn your back on a sufferer and assume that this is the time to just let them be alone, even if they express this to you. There can be an increased risk of suicidal ideation associative with PTSD. I also had the exciting honor of speaking with Mr. Steve, who is a veteran business owner and PTSD sufferer. He served in Desert Storm and denied his problems stemming from the disorder, until he described not being able to take it any longer. His specific symptoms were characteristic of suicidal thoughts, anger and depression. He, finally, sought help and told others what he had secretly been dealing with, after nearly 12 years of silent suffering. Mr. Steve is able to utilize riding, his brotherhood of riding friends and the handmade creations of his get back whips to help cope with his post trauma. Spotlight on Mickey and Rhonda Steelman They are owners of Tom’s Place. With the

assistance of Ricky Black, their patrons, Southern Devil H-D, Tracy Queen, Knight Hawk Rally, family and friends, they raised over $40,000 in one year to support patrons, staff and others. They, most recently, raised enough money to cover the medical necessities of the Tatum family, who were affected by a wreck Mr. Tatum was in, whereby he lost his leg and had to spend 1 month in Grady. The couple helped with a weekend full of events including a bike night, car wash and ride which raised over 7,000 to cover a prosthetic leg for Mr. Tatum.

FOUR HUNDRED THOUSAND STRONG

We came from all across the nation, And we rode our bikes to the Wall, We came from towns both large and small, We came to honor those that have given their all. Those names on the black granite are friends and relatives, The little boy down the street is on the Wall, They may be husbands, wives, or children, Their names are here for us, one and all.

You know you are not forgotten, You are loved by one and all. We gathered here from all points across the country, When we started our bikes and headed to the Wall, It would make a sane person wonder, It sounded like “Rolling Thunder.”

We might ride a Honda, BMW, or Harley, Those that we came to see don’t mind, Can you hear the voices talking to you? They speak so low and kind.

Why are all these people here? We are here to honor those on the Wall, We came in large numbers to show our respect, They are the ones that gave their lives, after all.

Where are our POW’s and MIA’s? Should they be on the Wall?

We came from the Army and the Marines, We came from the Air Force, Navy,

Coast Guard and the Merchant Marines. There were thousands of American and POW/MIA flags on bikes, Many with service and unit flags too, They were on two wheelers, trucks, and trikes. We are here for our brothers and sisters, We are here to thank those that went before us, We are not here to discuss if “it” was right or wrong, Together, here to stand, four hundred thousand strong.

In recognition of the 68th Hollister Freedom Rally

The entire review could be summed up in a sentence: “This film created an image and a lifestyle that yet endures.” Yes, the image of a young Brando sitting on his Triumph motorcycle, dressed in a black leather jacket, tilted cap and a stolen trophy attached at the headlamp, is certainly one that literally everyone has seen at least once. Some of you still live that image today! This film arguably started the biker exploitation explosion in this reviewer’s eyes, and set the tone for hundreds of “B” movie skirt riders that are still being spawned as we speak. Released in 1953, The Wild One was based on a short story The Cyclists’ Raid by Frank Rooney which was published in Harper’s magazine in 1951. Rooney’s story was inspired by the Life magazine expose dubbed “The Hollister riot” published in July 21, 1947, after the famed ‘motorcycle weekend’ on July 4th. Curiously, that event is still celebrated in Hollister to this day! Further research will show that this piece was not as well accepted as some of Marlon Brando’s other work, such as Streetcar Named Desire and the film was actually banned in the UK for 14 years! What is Johnny rebelling against? “What have you got?” The story starts out when Brando, starring as Johnny Strabler, and his gang the Black Rebels Motorcycle Club roll into a small Midwestern town and interrupt a motorcycle race

being held there. A member of the BRMC steals a trophy, and presents it to Johnny who is the president of the gang in a show of respect. This trophy will become a focal point in the rest of the film, as it was not ‘won’ in actual competition, but ‘won’ by the ‘club’ as a spoil of confrontation. Johnny never actually states that he won the trophy until the gang heads to a local café, where Johnny meets Kathie Bleeker (played by Mary Murphy) who is the daughter of the local constable. Johnny tries to impress Kathie by stating that he won the trophy in the race, and asks her out to a dance being held later in the evening. Kathie refuses, and as the gang causes more and more disturbance, the locals in the town prod Harry Bleeker (the local cop played by Robert Keith) to deal with the gang. At this point in the film it becomes clear that Kathie is actually attracted to Johnny, and his wild lifestyle, but the romance never seems to work out.… As Johnny and his gang leave the Café, they encounter Chino (played by Lee Marvin) and his gang. Johnny and Chino are old enemies, and it is inferred that they were both members of another – larger- gang. Their rivalry escalated when Johnny broke off and formed the BRMC. Chino tries to recover the stolen trophy, but is unable to do so. As in all films of this nature, a fight breaks out between Johnny and Chino - Johnny wins. During the melee, a citizen hits a motorcycle with his car, and Chino drags him out of the car to beat him up. It is at this point that Harry the Cop arrests Chino. Harry was going to arrest the citizen also, but he lets him go in fear of future retribution. With Chino in jail, Johnny returns to the café to once again ask Kathie out. She again refuses using the ‘trophy’ and the alleged theft as an excuse. … (I guess she didn’t want to be a “Trophy” wife!) Later that night, Chino’s gang abducts the citizen from his home and in a hilarious scene they attempt to put him in jail with Chino. They actually get him into a cot in the cell, but Chino is too drunk to get up, so they just leave him there. He later breaks out! How you ask? The locals form up a vigilante squad to run the bikers out of town. When they go to the jail to retrieve their neighbor, Chino escapes and disappears into the darkness. Later Chino and his gang attempt to abduct Kathie, but our hero Johnny saves the day! Kathie and Johnny soon part but the vigilantes capture Johnny and give him a good beating. He escapes, and returns to his motorcycle and as the vigilantes give chase, one of them throws a tire iron at the speeding bike. The tire iron knocks Johnny from his bike, but the rider-less machine careens into an elderly bystander, killing him.… Johnny is arrested and charged with manslaughter, but after Kathie and another witness corroborate his story he is released from jail. In the end, even though it is apparent that Johnny doesn’t want to thank his witnesses for speaking up for him, he returns to the Café to offer the trophy to Kathie. This film is a classic piece that you will likely enjoy if you are fan of biker exploitation films. I stated earlier that this is the one that started it all, and if you like this kind of action this is a must see! The film runs 79 minutes; it is presented in beautiful black and white, and available on DVD! I’ll give this one 5 stars, and you will play it over and over again, I promise…

A few weekends ago we were in a group of 12 friends to get in the wind and enjoy the day together. The group took this last ride with our departing pastor, as a way of saying goodbye because he had been called to a church in North Carolina. We hit a great breakfast restaurant, and had a lot of fun joking and reminiscing, and ate all kinds of good foods. After we were all stuffed, we took off on a ride to nowhere (isn’t that the best kind?). Our leader picked some

nice back roads through some great farmland and horse farms, the weather was ideal, and the ride just about perfect. At one point we stopped for some bottles of cold water and spent more time remembering the past while also talking about the future. Our leader asked for input as to where to go next but got no suggestions, and about 45 minutes later we pulled into an ice cream shop (who would guess) that overlooks Kings Bay. It was absolutely beautiful, and the ice cream was great. Even better was the time of fellowship, as we all recognized that our last day together was coming to an end. It had been a great day to ride and share together, but 2 of our 12 would soon be leaving us behind. Looking back on our day together, I was reminded of the words of Jesus in John 15:22, “This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.” I realized that this group of 12 people was linked together by our love for one another, a love that is not demanding or selfish but really caused us to deeply care about one another as brothers and sisters in Christ. Yes, two of us were leaving the

group, but that won’t change how we feel about one another, and North Carolina is just a nice ride north from here! As I thought about the love this group has for each other, I realize our lives reflect a far greater example—Jesus Christ. His love was, and is, absolute, unconditional, and without end. Indeed, in the end He gave His very life for us, the ultimate sacrifice of love. He was willing, and gave His life as a sin payment for His brothers. Not only that, He gave His life for every man, woman, and child who will ever live so they might have life and have it more abundantly. That being said, there is one prerequisite to receiving that love from Jesus; yet it is so simple even a child can understand it. One must believe that Jesus died to pay for our sins and was resurrected by God, and we must ask Him to be the Lord of our lives. Now that is love, pure and perfect love! Best of all, He loves you, and wants to be your Lord. Call on Him, He’s waiting for you! In The Wind, Denny Dingler
