Fall was in the air—the weather was great, a little on the cool side, which made it nice for everyone to get around the campfire at night or go to the bar. Angel City management put on a fantastic motorcycle rally. Take a look at the pictures; the place was packed and BTR 6 | BORNTORIDE.COM

everybody had a good time. Angel City was built like an old western town: covered wood boardwalks and lots of vendors, two bars and two restaurants in the corners that have swinging doors just like you would have seen in the Old West. If you

looking for a place to have an event such as a charity ride, an old western wedding with horse drawn carriages, a big family gathering, or a concert call Angel City at 478-627-3168. In the center of town there is a covered

pavilion where the bands play all day and most of the night. Their music is only interrupted for the bike games, the wet T-shirt contest, and an occasional wedding. I think I counted about 10 different bands playing great music and a good variety. When my wife of three years, yes I am a newlywed, comes with me, we love to dance. It is nice that some of the music was good for dancing. The biker games are great fun not only for the participants but also for the spectators.

BTR 8 | BORNTORIDE.COM

Actually, I think it’s more fun for the spectators. Let us not forget the wet T-shirt contest. This contest drew a big crowd. I almost forgot about it being Halloween and Angel city did a great job decorating. Some of the camp sites were decorated to the max. A lot of hard work was put into decorating their campsites; they looked great. Lots of people were dressed up in costume, so the costume contest was entertaining—some great costumes and amateur actors!

The place was packed and I met people from all the surrounding states and some from up North. You heard me, even Yankees are welcome! Bottom line folks, this is a great western theme town rally where you can get married, play games, eat, drink, meet interesting people and just have a fantastic time. Oh, and bring your bike because there are lots of great places to ride. See you at the spring rally. Life’s short so have fun,

There is nothing better than riding your motorcycle in the mountains of North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. The scenery is breathtaking, the roads are twisty and challenging, and there is so much to do that you can’t possibly get bored or run out of new things to see.

This past October, I led a group of friends on my annual Fall Leaf Ride to the High Country of northwestern North Carolina and the surrounding area. As always, this was an enjoyable trip that was made even better because we arrived in time to see the mountains all dressed up in their fall finery. Standing all around us were mountains resplendent in hues of red, orange, yellow, and gold; a marvelous sight that one must experience to truly appreciate. Add a seemingly inexhaustible inventory of man-made motorcycling joy in the form of curves and elevation changes that are guaranteed to bring a smile to the face of any motorcyclist and you have a recipe for one very memorable trip. Come along as I guide you through a week of riding in God’s Country

DAY ONE– BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY

Freshly arrived in the gloriously beautiful high country of North Carolina, my friends and I set about getting our base of operations in order for the week that lay ahead. Once all the business was attended to, it was time to mount up and get in some warm-up riding. I chose to lead the group northward on the Blue Ridge Parkway for this first day of mountain riding. Heading out of Pineola I made the mistake of taking the Linville route that would BTR 22 | BORNTORIDE.COM

take us up US 221 and across the shoulder of Grandfather Mountain to reach the Blue Ridge Parkway. My mistake was in forgetting that this was the first Saturday of the prime leaf-peeping season in the mountains. That meant that we weren’t alone; in fact, there must have been another 50,000 people in the immediate vicinity that had come to see the fall colors just like us. With the notable exception, of course, that their choice of transportation came with four wheels instead of two. What I’m trying to say is that we ran headlong into a major traffic snarl on US 221 that brought us to a near standstill for the better part of an hour. As it turned out, the traffic backup was caused by people trying to get into the park on Grandfather Mountain. Note to self and others: DO NOT use US 221 between Linville and the Parkway on leaf-season weekends! Once clear of the traffic jam we made it onto the Blue Ridge Parkway in a matter of minutes and continued our northward journey. The traffic on the Parkway was much heavier than usual, but at least it was moving.

We rode north at a slow and relaxing pace as demanded by the heavy traffic conditions. The popular overlooks at Rough Ridge and Julian Price Park were crowded to the point that it would have been difficult to squeeze because one more motorcycle, let alone the half-dozen in our group. So, we just sucked it up and continued riding north on one of the most beautiful roads in the eastern half of this great country of ours. Yes, it was a tough job, but somebody had to do it. We stopped at the overlook just north of Blowing Rock, NC and US 321. This overlook offers a nice view of the mountains to the south, as well as a nice shot of the Parkway itself. If you stand here long enough and listen closely, you can hear the whistle from the steam locomotive at Tweetsie Railroad as the train makes its way around the park. Our journey continued for another hour to the north before we decided to call it “far enough” for the first day and make our way back to our base camp at the Pineola Inn. And, yes, I did make sure to avoid US 221 on the return trip. We rode the Parkway well past Grandfather Mountain before dropping down to Pineola via some of the lesserknown back roads that run off the Blue Ridge Parkway. Rolling into the motel parking lot we were greeted by the sight of our buddy, Eddie, hard at work preparing our dinner of ribs and sausage on the motel’s outdoor grill. As quickly as we could get our bikes and gear stowed, we were tableside and enjoying Eddie’s culinary mastery in the

form of delicious grilled sausage, barbecued ribs, and plenty of tasty side dishes. This scrumptious meal was the perfect end to a great first day of riding.

DAY TWO – PEAKS AND LAKES

We rolled out right at 8 a.m. as planned and made our way over to Louise’s Famous Rock House restaurant located at the intersection of US 221 and NC 183, where we enjoyed a delicious country breakfast. Eddie used the opportunity to collect ten dollars from each of us to cover the costs of last night’s dinner, which was a small price to pay for such good food. I got a chuckle out of Eddie as he ignored Kenny Rogers’s advice and openly counted his money at the breakfast table. That may not be what Kenny had in mind when he sang about it, but it’s probably not a good idea to count your money at any table when you’re surrounded by a bunch of cash-starved motorcycling types. After breakfast we headed south on NC 181 toward Morganton, NC. This stretch of road was made up of a long series of sweeping curves that were occasionally separated by some tighter twisty turns which served to keep you wide awake. The views were mostly of forest covered slopes with the occasional long-range vista thrown in for spice. Just north of Morganton, we turned westward onto NC 126 for a scenic, twisty ride around the shores of Lake James. Leaving Lake James behind, we made our

way through downtown Marion, NC, before turning south on US 221 to pick up NC 226A, one of the most challenging roads in the area. NC 226A climbs up from US 221 just north of Marion, and is not to be confused with its counterpart to the north, NC 226. NC 226A is a motorcyclist’s dream come true as it delivers one tight turn after another, all the while climbing and snaking through scenic views and rustic settlements. The fun only ends when you make it to the top of the mountain and arrive in the quaint community of Little Switzerland. After a quick break at the Mineral Museum in Little Switzerland, I led the group south on the Blue Ridge Parkway to the intersection with NC 80. From the Parkway we rode down the mountain on NC 80, back toward Marion, NC. This 13-mile stretch of NC 80 is all downhill from the Parkway, but just like the “uphill” stretch on the north side of the Parkway, this road is an absolute blast to ride. In fact, anyone visiting the High Country should make it a point to ride NC 80 from Bakersville all the way to Marion, and then turn around and do it again! I promise you that you won’t be disappointed. Once at the bottom of the hill in Marion, we made a stop for some food and rest time before making our way back to Pineola via the most scenic and twisty sections of US 221. Rolling into the motel parking lot, we ended a full day of riding that had stretched from 8 AM until 6 PM.

Biker Movie Review

This month Born To Ride reviews the MiniSkirt Mob, another in a series of horrible old biker films for your entertainment. In some cases “the older the more horrible” comes to mind when dealing with these movies. This one was produced in 1968, and rates right (down) there with the best of the worst! The plot bears more than a few similarities to Satan’s Sadists (which I have previously reviewed for BTR). In this case, it’s Shayne, the psychotic female leader of The “Mini Skirts” played by Diane McBain and her hair-do, stalking the innocent young couple along with her ‘gang’ members. It seems that “Jeff” theman she’s after used to be “her

guy,” but he got wise, dumped his rodeo/ biker buddies and married some hot brunette girl from the local bank. This in my opinion was a weird mix. The connection involving ‘biker’ girls and rodeo guys never seemed to materialize. It looked more like a ‘hippie’ flick than a poorly made biker film. Anyway, here’s my best shot at explaining the plot. … Just as Jeff was preparing to apply the pork to his new bride “Connie,” all his old pals and the “Mini-Skirts” arrive at his camper trailer to party. This of course leads to a major fistfight, where Jeff and his new bride suffer the worst of the melee. Later Shayne the maniacal jilted blonde (and her hair-do)

Do you have a favorite Biker Movie we don’t have? Let us know: info@borntoride.com

convinces the other ne’er-do-wells to hang around with her, and continue to torture Jeff and Connie. As they chase them up a mountain road Jeff swerves and runs “LG” off the road crashing his motorcycle into a deep chasm. They return to find him dead, and decide to leave, but some boy scouts see all the action. The cops come later, and haul LG off. (You don’t see too much of the cops in this one oddly. ...) Later on, the gang finds Jeff and Connie camped out, and a couple of the guys rough Connie up while Jeff is out walking around. More psycho-babble from Shayne leads the gang to keep the couple trapped in the trailer with a rifle. That only works for a while, as Jeff tries to rig something up with the propane bottle, and the stove in the camper. As usual in these films one of the members turns on the other. In this case it’s Shayne’s sister, who wants to release Jeff and his bride and return to town. She knocks one of the rodeo rednecks out, and hatches a plan with Jeff and Connie. As she dons Connie’s clothes, the couple escapes while she fires at the gang from inside the trailer. The gang retaliates with Molotov cocktails, leading to one of the ubiquitous gags where a stunt man wears a fire suit and runs around the desert while flaming away. Anyhow, I’m not sure where the beer (or the empty bottles) originally came from, but the blast from the exploding propane kills Shayne’s sister. In the end two of the gang chase Jeff and Connie through the desert, and Shayne’s motorcycle slips on the edge of a ravine and crashes down several hundred feet. Shayne is holding on to the edge for dear life and begs Connie to save her. Connie grasps Shayne’s hand but well you know … she kinda lets go as Jeff approaches, and the couple watches as Shayne tumbles to her death. As typical in these old reels, most of the actors were totally unconvincing. I found myself thinking- these aren’t real bikers or rodeo dudes! These are simply bourgeois B-movie Hollywood types earning a living at ruining their future careers. I think that during most of the viewings however. Biker exploitation? No. Waste of good Mylar? Probably. You watch it and decide for yourself. I can only recommend this piece if you have a burning desire to see hot Sixties chicks in mini-skirts, go-go boots and huge hair. I did like the old Honda and Triumph motorcycles, and of course since there was Budweiser, (still not sure where it came from) it got one star. It runs 82 minutes, is available on DVD from MGM’s ‘Midnight Movies’ series, and I can only (in my right mind) give it 2 stars because there was a glaring lack of nudity. (The second star appears because I LOVE cat-fights!) So grab a Bud and some popcorn, and we’ll see ya next month! The Phantom BORNTORIDE.COM | BTR 31

Women’s World The Bigger—The Better

Rude awakening! I was invited to join several of my friends on a week-long vacation to Maggie Valley, NC and to join them riding the Tail of the Dragon—thinking I could easily pack for a long bike ride and take all my normal necessities; it was hilarious and wishful thinking. Learning how to pack for a long bike ride was an experience. I began packing bare essentials and slowly but surely my pile grew and grew some more. First I packed my undies and bra. Next, the jeans and tops got packed. Then began the fun! Okay, so I understand there will be washing machines were I go, and I will have to wash more often that’s all. Problem is when you add jammies, an extra pair of pants and top (just in case washing machines disappear) and in case the weather is too cold you need warm clothes that are big and bulky. What about a nice outfit in case you go out to a special place one night? Oh wait! What about shoes? I need slippers, flip flops for when I go out to the hot tub, nice heels to go with my nice outfit, boots for riding, sneakers for walking. Now I have at least five pairs of shoes to bring and they are all essential! Now add all the toiletries. Don’t forget the make up in case something extra special is planned. Ladies cannot forget the Mirror! Many places seem to have been decorated without thinking of a women’s need to see well when applying makeup. To be fair, I do remember ONE vacation rental that had a great makeup mirror on the wall for GIANTS! LOL I’m 5’ 1.5” and yes, I must count the .5 inches, it’s mine and must be recognized. The mirror was installed for a 6’+ woman, so I simply dragged a chair into the bathroom and kneeled while putting on makeup. Ok enough about the mirror let’s not forget BTR 32 | BORNTORIDE.COM

the rest of our typical toiletries. Now walk around and think of all the possible scenarios and what else you could possibly need, body lotion, your favorite blanket, laptop etc. Ok got it all! Staring at the pile of things I feel are a must take, I realize there’s no way this is going on the bike. So I calmly start going through the pile to discard everything that was not an absolute necessity. Okay so I think I got this right? Well I went through everything one by one and started separating what must go and what must be left behind. I ended up with two little piles. Pile one was what I decided I can leave behind and pile two was the remaining must take pile. Well I looked and pile one to see how much I took out and it had one tee-shirt and one pair of shorts. I looked at pile two and found everything else! OMG!! How do women travel on bikes? Naked? Two people from our group were trailering the bikes up to North Carolina instead of riding, which means there is a car that can carry more things. I called my friends and asked how much room was available for a few things of mine. A huge smile appeared on my face when they replied that there is plenty of room; I could bring a treasure chest and it would fit. Needless to say, I ran to the garage and dug out the biggest luggage I own! It was great knowing I could take it all and then some. The lesson here is to have friends with a car come too!!! LOL Alternatively, this is what I learned: 1. You only need a change of pants and two tops in case it rains, 2. two panties and one pair of socks, 3. small purse for your money, 4. Toothbrush, paste, deodorant, face moisturizer and sunscreen and hairbrush if you have hair or a duo rag. 5. Bring a small cooler with a couple of bottles of ice water. Take your clothes and roll them up. I protected my things by wrapping them in plastic bags in case rain would seep through the side bags. Traveling light was great and less stressful. Truthfully I did not use half the things I gave my friends to bring. Now I can pack quickly, easily and a lot less stressful.

Craven Moorehead as the thieves who do this have the capability to access your information without using a local source. The bank tells me that sometime soon I will get my money back but. … Anyhow being broke always makes for a fantastic holiday season, but besides all that BS and misfortune I continue to fight and count my blessings!

grave series of consequences which will haunt you for several months after the big holiday. For me, simply surviving Thanksgiving was tough enough. Unemployed and unable to make a decent living on the sale of my remaining possessions, I started to realize that this particular Christmas holiday wasn’t going to live up to the expectations of my recipients and the never-ending repercussions are likely to follow me for quite some time. This however is not a problem for a soldier (even a Soldier of Misfortune). I continue to fight even though that enemy wearing the festive red coat and the long white beard is threatening my home territory here in the trailer park. I have come to the realization that I must find a way to at least salvage the season, and not let down my loved ones, family, and friends. But there are always setbacks. … The internet, albeit a great thing for most people has serious issues and I have written several times that its sole purpose was for the distribution of pornographic material. Well, the dark side of that wonderful medium of communication recently took a toll on me. I went to the Home Depot to buy some building materials and that turned out to be a financial fiasco. My debit card was hacked, and the morons who got the card number were able to make sure that I had no dough in my bank account. Although the balance was miniscule, I spent several days trying to get back the money, and I was fairly sure that I had the intelligence not to use the card to do on-line transactions. YOU my friends, should be careful as well

The Soldier of Misfortune Welcome, my dedicated readers to the Christmas edition of my column here in this very special magazine. I have been writing for Born To Ride going on 15 years or more, purely for the entertainment of my readers (like you) who continue to remind me every time I’m too busy or drunk to turn in a story on time. I was certainly inspired by Hunter S. Thompson’s (Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, The Rum Diaries …) daily schedule which included rising at noon, smoking Dunhills, drinking coffee and cognac till the late evening when he would begin to write. Unfortunately for me, I can’t afford a lifestyle that includes these simple pleasures in life, with the exception of some bargain cigarettes and whatever beer is on sale at the corner store. For some reason I recently wished that I had published my incredible life journey as Hunter did, but alas, I spent most of my time working or goofing off instead of doing something positive. All my indiscretions and regrets probably are not on the forefront of your concern, but they will certainly continue to provide some interesting reading material regarding life on the edge of irreparable poverty. There are few things that inspire me more than that happy anticipation in the faces of the children who expect that special gift from Santa, and you can’t forget the same look that is displayed upon the faces of your spouses, family members, and friends. This is, after all the season for commercialism and failing to live up to the desires of your specific beneficiaries will certainly cause a

While you are counting your gifts this holiday season remember there are always people who have it a lot worse than you do. Remember to count your blessings! A few months before the holiday heyday, I bought this little crappy car for the ol’ lady to drive around. I didn’t have a lot of money from the crap I sold so you get what you pay for, but the thing was better than walking and it needed a little bit of work. Thanks to one of her brothers we were able to get the needed tie rods replaced without having to pay much. This was a blessing. Then when we needed an alignment, I took the car over to Absolute Auto over on U.S. 92 to get it fixed. These guys are great! So as it turns out, we also needed front tires and they hooked us up at a good deal. I would highly recommend them if you live in the Dover / Seffner area (813-659-1302). This was a blessing. The Ol’ Lady also got the El Jefe position at the trailer park, and we were very happy to move to a much larger trailer with a lot more room and a large kitchen for us to cook the food we don’t really have - and certainly this was a blessing! So, in my opinion I guess it’s not really about how much money you have to throw around – or how much you can tell people that you have more material things than them etc. etc. … I think that really the entire holiday season should be about loving one another and remembering that Christmas is really about celebrating Christ’s birth. I know that there’s a lot to do and a lot to say, but the reality lies in the blessing that we all have received. Keep the faith bitches!! I’m still pissed off, still broke, but I continue to believe and fight! Here’s wishing you a very great Christmas and remember to speed safely! BORNTORIDE.COM | BTR 43

Have you been really enjoying your time in the wind lately? I don’t get out as much as I would like, but when I do it is beautiful weather and sunny skies! The other day I was doing ministry at an event and started to break a sweat. My tee shirt even got a salt ring around the edges! I had ridden over in leather that morning, but the sun had climbed and it got really warm. The point is that just about the time I was getting

wet from the heat, it was time to mount up and ride. It didn’t take but about two blocks for the cooler air and the wind speed to start drying my shirt. It really felt good, totally worth a short time being warmer than I cared to be. Riding is a lot like that, a series of give and take events, good times mixed with not so good times. Coming home from Daytona recently, on a two-lane back road, there was a lot of traffic, and a higher sense of caution was necessary for safety. That disappointed me a little, but then I thought about how deserted that same road was on the way over that morning. One great example is a 70-mile ride I took years ago to see my girlfriend at her parent’s lake cottage. It was summer time in central Texas, and it was very hot. In that 70 miles I got soaked by rain 3 times (no rain gear), but I was totally dry when I arrived. I wasn’t thankful at all during the rain but very happy when I arrived freshly showered and dried! During the holiday season we have so many reasons to be thankful; good friends, great bikes, and the freedom to get in the wind

whenever we want. Time together with those that are important to us is special, and we should be thankful for each moment we can share with them. That’s why I like to remember the things to give thanks for when things may not be going my way, it reminds me how good things really are! In Ephesians 5:20, the Bible says, “giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” There will be times in each of our lives when things get tough, but there is a great peace when we can learn to be grateful for what we have going right in our lives and not focusing on the challenges. God has promised to never leave us or turn away from us. That gives us power to overcome the dark times of life as we look forward with thanksgiving towards the brighter days before us. When life gets you down, look up, and remember there is a God who loves you. Give Him thanks for all He does, and He’ll give you an abundance of reasons to be thankful! In The Wind, Denny Dingler
