The families of Angel City want to wish each and every one of you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. We all hear Wayne on stage each rally as he lets everyone know, “Once you walk through those gates here at Angel City, you are no longer a customer, but family.” Wayne means it when he says this. Over a decade now, Wayne and Ralph listen to every “family member” that travels to attend Angel City year after year. Though it may not appear at times that they listen, they do. It is important to them to take the time and listen to input, especially if it is something that can bring excitement to Angel City as well as improve any aspect of the show. This past fall, so many had to make last minute sacrifices due to Hurricane Michael. We heard from most of our long-time attendees from areas throughout Florida that all were safe, though some did experience losses when it came to homes and materials. The biggest relief was everyone and their families were safe. The first night of Hell on Wheels, Hurricane Michael to make an appearance in Angel City, and at about 11PM that Wednesday, those that were in town hunkered down in the saloon for one hell of a ride for about an hour until the eye of the hurricane blew over town. The next day, the crew at Angel City continue to work night and day following up with every person on the property and checking in with them all. Three showers were destroyed and one leg of power to the

RV’s was down, but all guests had the option of moving around to relocate to some open RV locations and connect to power for the duration of Hell on Wheels. At that time, the sun was out for the entire weekend, and the crew at Grease Inc. and Garage71 took the party to a whole level at Angel City that has never seen! From the pre-71’ Dirt Track Hot Rod Grudge Races, to the appearance of the World-Famous Captain and Maybelle, Hell on Wheels brought a whole new element to the long life of Angel City. The line-up was amazing including headliners Angela Reign and Mustang Sally. Other acts including Pearl Bottom Radio, Smokey Jones and the $3 Pistols, Slim and the Gems, and Southern Ska Syndicate brought some great changes to the line-up with some favorite returning artists including Matt Brantley and Joe Santana. Well, this Spring, we plan to continue to bring the rolling sideshow to Angel City. The direction this Spring will be to travel back to the Old West and relive the Wild Bill’s Wild West Show. We are working on some interesting additions, including inviting all of you to participate in Friday night’s Wild West theme. Dress according to what you believe the late 1800s would be like in the Wild West. From your local bartender to your pistol spinning outlaw, and your maiden dressed to tease her cowboy, let us have some fun this Spring in Angel City. You can see all the updates and

releases as we announce them on www. AngelCityMotorcycleRally.com. Make sure to stop by the Hellbender and Southern Devil Harley-Davidson booth during the Great American Motorcycle Show, the last weekend in January to grab your copy of Grease Inc. featuring on the back cover the Angel City Kustom Kulture Festival. There you can sign up with Grease Inc. Rag Dolls a chance to win passes to Angel City for April’s show. We want to leave you with holiday cheers and thought during this Christmas season. “Happy, happy Christmas, that can win us back to the delusions of our childish days; that can recall to the old man the pleasures of his youth; that can transport the sailor and the traveler, thousands of miles away, back to his own fire-side and his quiet home!” — Charles Dickens What’s ahead for the Spring Angel City Wild West Kustom Kulture Festival After Hell on Wheels, the crew at Angel City began to work on plans that have already been set into motion getting ready for some new ideas and returning some of the old traditions: • Working on Hooligan Dirt Track Racing • Continued focus a great line up for entertainment for the Spring • Hot Rod Rodeo and Bike Show • Expanding on some crazy games including the Great American Gentleman’s Brawl brought to by Grease Inc. AN AMAZING YEAR-IN-REVIEW

As I’m writing this, I’m reflecting on what an astounding year 2018 was, both in motorcycling and in my own life. The memories, experiences, and stories come rushing back into my mind, and I’m grateful for each one. The MIC report that showed women riders in America is up to 19% is fantastic news, decades in the making. The “Give A Shift” initiative, among others, to encourage more people to take up motorcycling is showing signs of having a positive effect. The legendary Royal Enfield Motorcycle Company has entered the American market, and all of the major brands are stepping up their game to reach new and young riders with approachable, affordable bikes. In racing, MotoAmerica, American Flat Track, and all the AMA “Cross” divisions had banner years. It has been a great year in motorcycling, with better days ahead. In my own life, 2018 was most memorable. I interviewed NHRA motorcycle drag racer Ricky Patterson, met skateboarding icon Tony Hawk, spent much time with AMA and MotoGP racing legend Wayne Rainey, and enjoyed getting to know so many of you,

our readers, via the Great American Motorcycle Show, the Great American Biker Bash, and The Ride to Remember, to name a few. I’ve said it many times, and still believe it’s true- the best part of riding is the people you share it with. I traversed the continent this year, beginning with an epic adventure back in March, riding the entire length of the Baja Peninsula, courtesy of Born To Ride and MotoQuest. It was the journey of a lifetime. I relished the privilege of covering several MotoAmerica race rounds for the magazine, from Road Atlanta, to Road America in Wisconsin, wrapping up at Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham with the crowning of the 2018 champions. I toured the incredible Harley-Davidson in Milwaukee. I capped off the year by taking Ken Anderson’s ProRider Atlanta course, the most challenging and rewarding rider safety class I’ve ever experienced. Oh, and I bought a new motorcycle this year, my beloved

Bonney- a Triumph Street Cup. With it, I’ve come full circle, riding what my father rode in his younger years, and what I learned to street ride on as a kid back in the late 70s, a Bonneville. Sadly, 2018 was also the year my dad and mom had to give up riding, but we all treasure the memories, the miles, and the years we rode together. What a year. I’m looking forward to 2019, in the motorcycle industry and in my own life. There will be new roads, new rides, new opportunities, and new friends. So keep reading, keep riding, keep in touch with us, and we hope to see you out on the road somewhere. Ride safe, ride much, ride life, in 2019. BTR 20 | BORNTORIDE.COM

Women’s World REFLECTIONS & RESOLUTIONS

It is a brand new year full of exciting adventures and endless possibilities. Consider all that you had dreamt of and let go of. Consider how your life could be different had you made different choices in life. Now celebrate that you are here and alive, able to read this article because that means you can change things and live your life in extraordinary ways, starting today. It is not too late to reinvent yourself. If you are here on earth and breathing, you can start to reinvent your life beginning with your mind and attitude. If you choose to look at things in a doom and gloom manner then that is the bubble you will live in. Instead, bust that dark bubble and blow a new rainbow colored one that is big, bright, and beautiful. This past year, I had the opportunity to have met a wonderful soul who was an inspiration to many and lived life in his very own wonderful and unique way. He knew how to live in the rainbow color balloon in more ways then one. In the October 2015 issue, I wrote an article about him, his name was “CRZ-T” (Crazy T). He was a gentleman with a great personality and attitude towards life. As I sat to write this New Year’s Resolution article, I was saddened by the news that CRZ-T had passed away December 19, 2015. God bless him. May he rest in peace and rock his world in heaven. CRZ-T knew how to live. He was a man who stood out and sadly many people did not get to know him better, due to their own ignorance. When you see someone different than you don’t run and don’t judge. Instead, see it as your perfect opportunity to learn and grow. Don’t let these opportunities pass you by. I approached CRZ-T and got to know him better. He was smart, incredibly funny, and had an attitude we should all have. We were waiting for our doctors in our cancer treatment journey when we met. We talked and joked knowing this is the journey of life. Can’t dwell on things, instead we have to live and go with the flow so to speak. We are not what happens to us, we are not our past and we surely are not our disease; therefore, look at the present and the future. CRZ-T knew how to be himself regardless of

what others thought, and he knew how to live in the now. I will surely miss not seeing him at my doctor visits. I feel blessed to have had the opportunity to meet him. I encourage everyone to learn to live life the EQ LifeStyle way and not wait any longer. Live free of all the useless nonsense. Clean out all the clutter and uselessness in your life to give room for you and your new exceptional life. So what will you do this year, starting today, with your one and only life? The year 2016 is your brand new year, make it extraordinary. Try brand new things you have never dared to do. So long as you are not hurting anyone don’t fear, don’t doubt yourself, and definitely don’t worry what other people say or think. All you motorcycle enthusiast how about that one dream ride that you have heard so much about? How about doing that ride and experiencing it first hand? Pick a place and go enjoy yourself. In 2015, I rode the Tail of the Dragon in North Carolina. I put all of my 1001 excuses aside and just picked up and went with a group of friends. We tend to keep waiting and postponing things until such future events happen and that is a great way to NOT experience life. The experience on those mountain roads was indescribably spectacular and it is embedded in my memory for a lifetime. I also rode the 7-mile Bridge to Key West, with breathtaking views like no other. How about riding in Palm Beach along A1A? It is a picturesque journey just like right out of a movie or magazine. You can feel the ocean breeze, the sun, and the ocean aroma. Once you taste the world outside of your comfort zone you won’t ever want to go back. Life becomes more and more delicious every step of the way. I invite you to come check out our upcoming events (Born To Ride Women’s World: An EQ LifeStyle) at www.EQWS.org and/ or www.borntoride.com. Join our mailing list so you don’t miss out. I’m looking forward to meeting you and making this journey called life tremble with love, joy, purpose and passion!

Join us at Bert’s Barracuda HarleyDavidson if you are a new rider, a potential rider or experienced rider. We’ll have information on motorcycle endorsement classes. Meet and Greet with the members

of Stilettos on Steel. There will be a ride over the Skyway especially geared to newbie riders and Skyway ‘virgins.’ Many new riders are extremely apprehensive when it comes to getting out in the wind on their two or three-wheel steeds. Sometimes, with encouragement and support from others that love to ride, a joyous occasion is celebrated when the once shy and timid rider feels a brand-new, unbridled freedom with new riding friends! What a way to do just that with a Skyway Ride!

I must confess, the Isle of Man TT has pulled me in deep. Unless you have gone to the greatest race on earth, it is hard to explain. Being a photographer, I have thousands of photographs that blend all together in the sea of photographers. I started BTR 32 | BORNTORIDE.COM

looking at my pictures and could see that I needed to stand out in the crowd. I have an art background and all the tools I needed, so I let my brain take over. It didn’t take long to finish my first work of art, well actually it did and

6 months later, I have completed over 100 of them. Some of them are simple, some are complicated and some of them are completely off the hook! The process seems to evolve every time I sit down to the computer and pull out my graphics pad.

Born To Ride Magazine, Real Editorial Content, Real Value every month for you the Reader

2018 was a very sad year in the road racing world as we lost 3 great racers that competed on the Isle of Man course. I spent a very long time working on a tribute that included all 3 in it, Dan Kneen, James Cowton, and William Dunlop. I have

included the 3 men in quite a few of my pictures because it keeps their memory living and helps heal the heart. All of my images did start as a photograph. I usually start one by changing it to a black and white

image, then make an outline of the motorcycle and rider and then I let my imagination take over the digital brush. I have made some very plain, mundane pictures into something that I never would have planned and imagined. I may add multiple images BORNTORIDE.COM | BTR 33

together or I isolate just a part of the picture. One of the last ones I did was of Peter Hickman, the winner of the 2018 Senior TT race. It started as a boring, poorly lit photograph with a cluttered background. it was just a snapshot. I painted the background black, pumped up the color and went to work on the lighting … it turned BTR 34 | BORNTORIDE.COM

into one of my favorite works! I am headed back to the Isle of Man in 2019 and will be spending 9 days photographing the men and women that make up this little thing called the Isle of Man TT. It will be my 3rd trip across the pond and hopefully not my last. I have been involved with Born To

Ride for a very long time and I thank Ron for letting me share my passion whenever I can. I have a website, www.scottfodell.com if anyone is interested in seeing more of my work. I am still a photographer, I just need to stand out in the crowd a little louder. Scott Odell

Born To Ride is reviewing the top 13 “Biker Exploitation” Films. Elvis’ Roustabout comes in at number 11. In order to understand the true and effectual definition of the word (roustabout), I actually had to do some research. I had always assumed that a ‘Roustabout’ was just a loner that traveled around on a motorcycle, drinking and beating people up. This vision in my mind was likely based on the movie, which I viewed when I was a child. I wasn’t very far off. It seems that the true definition of a roustabout or people that are (roustabouts) are basically un-skilled laborers. The use of this term is common around oil-rigs and carnivals. I suppose now they would just be referred to as laborers. But that enlightenment, as late in life as it came, has little or nothing to do with the movie itself. Roustabout isn’t really a biker exploitation film per se, but it does give a glimmer of what life was like in the mid sixties, and it does actually feature Elvis riding a 305 Honda in a lot of scenes. Elvis actually DID ride motorcycles, but the lore that BTR 46 | BORNTORIDE.COM

follows him rarely refers to this activity. And this one is more of a ‘musical’ / ‘romance’ following in the footsteps of other Elvis films. Hey, you gotta admit – Elvis was mostly notorious for his music, not his acting! Charlie Rogers (played by Elvis) is a musician performing in a “Tea House” which is the 60’s equivalent of a 1920’s speakeasy, or a place that may serve alcohol illegally, or perhaps to folks that are underage. I base this on a popular term used in the movie. The waitress serving some college kids says “ Well if you see that light come on over there it means that the FUZZ is on the way, and you better ditch the beer and go back to the coke”. I LOVE that term Fuzz. (For you younger folks) It’s a really old term for the Police. I remember once I asked a girlfriend “Have you ever been picked up by the Fuzz?” And she replied “No, but I HAVE been slung around by my t*&$!!!” Anyway, our hero Charlie sings a great anti-college boy song “Poison Ivy League” to the table of kids. As Charlie leaves, he is confronted by a trio of the Ivy-Leaguers and is fired from the gig after brawling with them in the establishment’s parking lot. He uses Judo to overcome the trio, and is soon arrested by the local Fuzz. After a night in jail, Charlie hits the road on his Honda 305 Superhawk motorcycle and encounters Joe, Maggie and Cathy. Joe runs him off the road, and he crashes through a fence wrecking his bike and guitar. Maggie, a carnival owner offers him a place to stay and a job with her carnival while the bike is being repaired. Charlie becomes a roustabout or carnie, and spends most of his time chasing Cathy around the show grounds. Joe spends a lot of time abusing Charlie but Maggie recognizes his musical talents and promotes him to top billing. His singing and musical act draws huge crowds to the carnival. Off stage, Charlie cultivates a romance with Cathy but after numerous troubles with her pugnacious father Joe and an incident over a customer’s lost wallet, Charlie leaves the carnival to star in the show of rival carnival producer Harry Carver. It is at this juncture in the film that you will once again be reminded that this is a ‘biker’ film when Charlie on a dare, rides inside the “Wall of Death”. Yeah, I doubt that Elvis did this stunt himself, but it is curious to see one of the original barrels from the sixties. It’s still a great show today! Charlie is a great success at Carvers show but when Charlie learns Maggie may face bankruptcy, he returns to her carnival and relieves her financial woes with his earnings from Carver’s show. After yet another fight with Joe, our hero saves the day and in the musical finale, he is happily reunited with Cathy and remains with Maggie’s carnival. If you are an Elvis fan, you’ve already seen this one I’m sure. But if your looking for a hard core biker exploitation film, this really isn’t it!

THE PHANTOM MOVIE REVIEW

Do you have a favorite Biker Movie we don’t have? Let us know: info@borntoride.com

Christian Motorcyclists Association Thinking back on a project I undertook years ago, I shake my head in amazement of the many lessons I learned in the process. I decided that I needed a Harley; no other bike would meet my expectations. In my zeal to get a Harley, I got in way over my head and bought a basket case. The shop I bought it from promised to let me bring it to the shop on Saturdays and put it all together there. I was also promised some advice during the building process, counsel that would be sorely needed by a rookie bike builder! The first lesson I learned, since I was outside on a concrete slab and the shop owner was inside the shop, was that my mentor didn’t have time to check on me. He had a business to run and bikes to build or repair. Very simply, if I wanted his advice, I had to go ask him for guidance. Being young, and not very wise in many ways, I would search for help prior to asking the shop owner, as I didn’t want to bother him. Back then, in the late seventies, there was no YouTube, no internet, or Chilton’s style manuals for Harleys. There was a large paperback book that gave general information, but to be able to use it one needed to have at BTR 48 | BORNTORIDE.COM

least some experience building bikes, I had none! I also recall, during that adventure, that if the shop owner didn’t have an answer for me, one of his partners could share some ideas. The difficulty there was that the partner would hang out in the mobile home attached to the shop. I would have to go knock on the door and hope I didn’t wake someone up from a nap. If it wasn’t one thing it was another, the project was full of challenges, yet full of life lessons! This all taught me to be proactive, to ask for help and advice, and to seek out multiple streams of information. I learned to pull up my bootstraps and knock on the door of opportunity, even if it made me hesitant or apprehensive! The Bible tells us, in Matthew 7:8, “Everyone who asks will receive. Everyone who searches will find. And everyone who knocks will have the door opened.” This verse is meaningful and full not only of hope but promise as well. This verse pertains to our everyday life and to Jesus’ promises to us as well. If you want Jesus to come into your life and forgive you of your sin, and to be your Savior, ask Him. If you want His love, search for it. If you ask Him to let you into His heart, He will open the door. And it is simple enough to begin by asking for His forgiveness! If you want a peace and a joy that surpasses everything, just ask, search and knock. He will answer your call every time! In The Wind, Denny Dingler
