HONORING THEIR COURAGE A June is here and let’s not forget Dad. Father’s Day is a day honoring fathers, celebrated on various days in many places around the world. It compliments Mother’s Day. Happy Father’s Day to all the father’s reading this ad and Happy Father’s Day to all the mother’s reading this if you are a sole parent, mom and a dad of the family. Grandfathers, step-dads, uncles, brothers and sisters, you all deserve to be noted for what you do to be a figure in a child’s life. If dads not there someone who steps in as a fatherly figure. As the originator we have only one father but it’s up to life to keep it all together, life, family, growing up in a household that’s strong and loving. Happy Father’s Day to my dad! A Marine and NYC Police Officer for 28 years. Thank you for everything you’ve done for me in my life. I admire you for who you are and how you always provided for the family. I love the way you loved your grandchildren and I’m proud they loved you back! To anyone reading this, call your dad and tell him Happy Father’s Day. If you’re not speaking, now is the time to start speaking to your father again.

Ron Galletti BTR 6 | BORNTORIDE.COM
My Uncle “Gee” was my dad’s father figure in his life for many years because his father worked many hours. He came from Italy and worked with marble but then later became ill and couldn’t do much with my dad. That’s when Uncle “Gee” stepped in and helped my dad in life as a father figure. So in this month of June, as a special Father’s Day tribute, we would like to honor my Uncle “Gee” Fidel Galletti who was a real WWII war hero pilot who flew B-17s. Most of all, he was my dad’s hero. This story is courtesy of The 390th Memorial Museum and my cousin, Marie Galletti Mitchell. Ron Galletti As Marie Galletti Mitchell and I corresponded regarding her story in the Sq. J, I found myself reflecting on how I enjoy talking with and writing to our descendants. They are special people … people who realize the importance of what our 390th did during WWII. Allow me to quote from one of Marie’s letters: “What a group of good-looking, virile young men in Dad’s crew! Dad is first on the left in the front row. Laverne Dillow was killed in action. What a waste of life it was for him to have died so young! When Dillow went missing, his mother wrote to my mother to ask for news of her son. My mother has kept that letter in her wartime scrapbook ever since. Now that I’ve gotten older (age 61), I realize how many years and how many of life’s chapters young men like Dillow have missed. So true…and today we honor those living and we memorialize those who have passed on to their reward. Heroes all ... and we hope that this story adds yet another chapter to their lives … let it be so!
THE WARSAW AIRDROP OF 1944
On September 1, 1939, Nazi tanks rolled into Poland and started World War II. By September 18, 1944, the Polish resistance, which had bravely fought Hitler’s military might for five long years, was trapped in Warsaw with food, ammunition and other supplies running dangerously low. The Poles called upon the Allies to provide supplies by airdrop. The Allies agreed, and airmen of the 390th, along with the 95th and 100th, were called upon to replenish the patriots of Warsaw with the supplies they desperately needed. There was a catch, however. Warsaw is situated west of the Vistula River from Russia, and the Soviets had an unstated plan: Joseph Stalin wanted to weaken Poland in order that Russia could add this formerly sovereign nation to its empire once WWII was over. So while Stalin orally agreed to the Polish Airdrop, he kept delaying it by refusing to allow Allied planes to land on Soviet soil. (At that time, B-17s could not carry enough fuel to fly from England to Poland round trip.) Meanwhile, the Poles were getting weaker, and thousands died fighting Nazi soldiers on the streets of Warsaw. Finally, in September
1944, Stalin relented, giving the Allies permission to land about one hundred B-17s at some makeshift airfields in Russia. On September 18, 1944, my father, First Lieutenant Fidel Galletti, along with his crew of eight men, climbed into their Flying Fortress to complete their 23rd mission of WWII. These airmen would fly for 10 hours that day to provide the Poles with the supplies they desperately needed. My father’s log for that day reads, “We were to drop supplies to the Polish partisans holding parts of the city. Load was 10 containers and 2,800 gallons topped off. Bombing altitude was to be 14,000 feet. We ran into weather about 50 miles west of target and did several 360s trying to get over it. Colonel Tuesdale [command pilot of the lead plane] gave up trying to get on top and decided to go under as the base of clouds was at 12,000 feet. We got to the IP [Initial Point] and started on the run when fighters hit us. We were flying 565 #2 in the high of the high and out of position as they hit us. They came out of the clouds, and the tail, waist and ball opened up on them. Nine of them attacked from six o’clock level, and Rogers [tailgunner] had the best shot at them. He got the fourth coming in. Two 20 mm shells hit in the cockpit alongside of Spencer [co-pilot], and the oxygen started burning.” Behind the pilot and co-pilot were two oxygen tanks. Flak from the German ammunition pierced both tanks, setting the highly volatile gas into a blaze which quickly spread throughout the cabin. The co-pilot, William Spencer, found himself sitting next to a three-foot hole in the side of the plane, with oxygen burning all around him. His only option was to jump from his seat, through the hatch and into the nose. Before he leapt from the cockpit, he used the interphone to order the crew to bail out. At the same time, my father pulled away from the formation so that his plane, if it went out of control, would not bring down any other B-17s. He then set up the autopilot and hit the alarm bell. Both my father and the co-pilot were unaware that the fire had eaten through the communication lines, rendering it impossible for the crew to hear the orders to bail out of the crippled aircraft. Meanwhile, the interior of the airplane continued to burn, and the plane was filling with smoke. The airmen, while still able to breathe through oxygen masks, were unable to see through the dense smoke. The crew would have to act quickly if they were to save their lives and those of the Polish people they had flown so far to help. Top Turret Gunner Eduard H. Daly, reacting quickly to a five-foot hole and a fire in the waist of the plane,

AND SACRIFICE, HAPPY FATHER’S DAY
Pilot-Fidel Galletti grabbed a fire extinguisher, put out the fire in the rear of the cockpit, then passed the fire extinguisher to my father. My father worked on putting out the fire up front, all the while knowing that if any flak were to nick the nearby primer fuel line, the plane would explode. The primer, next to the punctured oxygen tanks, was constantly charged with gasoline. Whenever fighter planes and ground antiaircraft artillery hit a plane, shrapnel can boomerang around inside the aircraft and hit anything or anybody in it, including, of course, the primer line. Fortunately, once the fires were extinguished, the worst was over. The primer was never nicked, and no one but the pilot sustained even minor wounds. However, danger still threatened the aircraft and its crew. The right tail elevator, necessary to stabilize the aircraft, had been almost torn off, and the cables to the tail section were nearly severed. One of the duties of a pilot is to keep his plane stable, but the damaged tail elevator pulled against my father, physically moving him back and forth as he tried to control the aircraft. In effect, the damaged tail was working against him for control of the plane. In addition, my father was concerned that the torn tail cables, which had been shredded into wires, would get caught in the pulleys through which they threaded on their way from the control stick to the tail. Fortunately, this was not the case and finally, almost miraculously, after what must have seemed like hours of German attack, the Flying Fortress set down as scheduled on an improvised landing field in Mirograd, Russia. In spite of fire and the damage to the plane, bombardier Harry Evje had been able to drop the supplies on target, thus fulfilling mission #23 of my father’s crew: to assist the Polish dissidents in resisting the Nazi army. In August 2005, a CNN documentary, “Warsaw Rising,” filmed from Warsaw during the airdrop, shows the B-17s approaching the city. They looked so heroic as they flew in to the rescue! In the words of narrator David Ensor,
“Suddenly, in the sky – a miracle!” In the same documentary, Nina Januszowska Thiessen, a Polish underground courier, recalls of the airdrop: That was the most wonderful picture, when the American planes came. They were very, very high, so you didn’t see anything; you just heard the mmmm [sounds] of the heavy bombers. Then, all of a sudden, there was –like flowers. The parachutes were multi-colored, you know. And those multicolored flowers brought hope that Warsaw would live another day. Over 2,500 years ago, Herodutus, “The Father of Western History,” declared that the purpose of written history was to memorialize glorious deeds. The Polish Airdrop of 1944 is one of modern history’s glorious deeds. America can be proud that the crew of B-17 #565, along with hundreds of other young American airmen, bravely risked their lives to take part in this gallant operation.

JP’s RAMBLIN’ ON...
WARNING: This could be dangerous. That’s what the sign should have read. But it didn’t. In fact, the Alabama County Rd 548 sign was almost invisible. We missed it the first time by. Leaving Marietta, GA and riding back roads on a beautiful Sunday afternoon, taking GA Hwy 78 over the GA/AL line, we quickly spotted our next turn, County Rd 66. Fine. So far. But where was County Rd 548? It was supposed to be our next right. Right. Making our way into Heflin, AL, I realized we had missed our turn. Now please keep in mind, I DON’T use GPS. I don’t even have GPS. Nor do I want it. I like an adventure! So, I use JPS! Recalculating! U-turn. All eyes looking for AL County Rd 548. We spot it! A small sign nailed to a pole off the side of the road, actually on 548. No warning. No heads up. Gravel. Not what I was expecting while riding my Road King. More suited for my old Buell Ulysses. Oh well, it won’t last forever. And we’ve done it before. Even on my old hardtail. Of course, we were younger back then. This time, it did seem to last forever. A challenge. But both a beautiful and fun road. This Sunday afternoon adventure ride thru gravel lasted about 25 miles. An hour and a half, or so. And it wore my butt out! At least my wife Dana enjoyed it. We never saw another car. Or hiker. Or surprisingly, not even an animal. No squirrels. Thankfully no bears. We rode up to the Piedmont, AL area and caught 278 eastbound, homeward. Great ride but be forewarned! Mother’s Day. My ride to Illinois to see Mom, and to test ride my new Metzler CruiseTec tires in the rain, was, well … didn’t happen. I knew it was gonna rain and rain a lot in North GA and all thru TN. Especially, around Nashville. I was prepared, so I thought. I was almost If you have a story you would like to share with Born To Ride, Call: 888-795-5779

looking forward to it, especially to check out the new tires. Which, by the way, up until this time had performed flawlessly! And still, do. I had the bike packed, rain suit out and ready. Full face helmet, even Rain-X on my windscreen. But taking one last look at the weather channel before I left, the thunderstorms and hail looked worse than I had expected. Why risk it unnecessarily? I took my car. Actually, a wise decision. I made it in one piece and had a nice visit with Mom. Back in Atlanta, I traveled to the HarleyDavidson of Atlanta 10th Annual Hot Rods & Harleys event! WOW! What a great show! I captured some of the fun in photos to share with you. Great cars! Nice bikes! Good food! And how about the live music by Spanky’s BTR 14 | BORNTORIDE.COM
Monkey. Those guys can rock! And roll. The beer garden always seemed to be the place to be. How can that be? Cutting my time short at this great party, I quickly headed over to Hellbender Harley-Davidson for their Spring Fling Biker Bash. The music was great. The beer was cold. The food was delicious! Some people didn’t even notice the crawfish boil going on down behind the service department. So of course, that meant more for me. Just helping out. Going over and beyond the call of duty. Oh yeah, I did sample some of the sausage, corn, and pineapple too. Whatta feast! I should mention the bikini bike wash. Everyone gathered ‘round, eyes staring at the girls, just to make sure they didn’t miss anything. Yep, the guys didn’t want to miss a thing! And the girls did a great job washing,
too! Thanks. We appreciate you. Good show! Now, what’s up for June? Plenty. Just check out our events calendar. I see the Atlanta Ride for Kids happened on June 2. I hope you made that one. Then on June 8, be sure to make it to Frazier’s H-D Customer Appreciation Day. June 15, both Southern Devil has their CVMA 3rd annual Ride 4 Life, and the Amvet Riders Post 118 is having their annual run this year to help our Veterans. And one more poker run on June 29 at the Full Throttle Roadhouse, proceeds go to Healing for Heroes. And that’s just in the Atlanta area! Like I say, check our events column for places to go and people to see in your area. So, ‘til next month, “keep your knees in the breeze and stay riding free.” JP Brady

Smoky Mountain Harley-Davidson’s Black Dragon Breakdown changed things up for its 7th incarnation. Despite the weather turning everything upside down, the weekend became one of the most memorable in its history! Extending from its traditional single-day format to a weekend-long celebration of motorcycles and music proved to be a recipe for success. The weekend was packed full of live music, professional builders, an amateur bike show, and hooligan flat track racing BTR 16 | BORNTORIDE.COM
at Smoky Mountain Speedway with Mama Tried’s Flat Out Friday crew, all the way from Milwaukee. The weekend kicked off with a full day of test and tune at the race track. Local riders competed with visiting riders from all over the area, including Harley Hooligan riders California and even Australia. Later in the evening, a free live show was presented at The Shed featuring local up and comers, Royal Johnson. Friday served as the rev up event for the entire weekend.
Saturday was set to be the main event for the flat track races. Unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate. At about midday, huge thunderstorms rolled in and completely soaked and tore up the track. Track and safety officials had no choice but to cancel the Main Events. While fans and racers alike were certainly disappointed, the Mama Tried’s crew was not going to let the weekend end on a soggy note. Racers and officials headed back over to Smoky Mountain Harley-Davidson for a
rider’s reception when the bright idea arose to try and give the gathering fans a show. Race officials headed out to the back parking lot, previously set up for drag racing and quickly began constructing a short track to compete on. The weather was cleared and the pavement dried, hay bales served as track barriers and the hooligans were itching to race! Before you knew it, heats were being run and races were being won! The hooligans put on multiple races and gave the large crowd a moment they would never
forget. After the races, live music ramped up at The Shed with rockabilly sensations The Royal Hounds and garage rock heroes Drivin’ N Cryin’. In between the bands, Jeff Holt of V-Twin Visionary recognized the pro-builders and touted the upcoming V-Twin Visionary Smoky Mountain Tour coming to the area in late August. The rain held off until after the concerts ended and Sunday rolled around with clear weather for the open amateur bike show. Custom and Vintage motorcycles filled The

a house which becomes a home, one hands down and another takes up the heritage of mind and heart, laughter and tears, musings and deeds. Love, like a carefully loaded ship, crosses the gulf between the generations. Therefore, we do not neglect the ceremonies of our passage: when we wed, when we die, and when we are blessed with a child; When we depart and when we return; When we plant and when we harvest. Let us bring up our children. It is not the place of some official to hand to them their heritage. If others impart to our children our knowledge and ideals, they will lose all of us that is wordless and full of wonder. Let us build memories in our children, lest they drag out joyless lives, lest they allow treasures to be lost because they have not been given the keys. We live, not by things, but by the meanings of things. It is needful to transmit the passwords from generation to generation. They say apples don’t fall too far from the tree. Alan Bernard of Santiago Chopper has followed in the footsteps of his forefathers; he is a fourth generation bike builder and rider. Thanks to Alan, Born To Ride is proud to present four generations of bike-building Bernard’s.

Why Influence, Motivate and Challenge from a Leader like Jim Fannin? Born To Ride!
Women’s World Brown Sugaa and Medusa
Danni Benson started out riding on the back of her boyfriend’s bike. He tended to drink a bit and she realized that riding with him wasn’t safe. She learned to ride her own and bought a 1998 GSXR 600 sport bike. Later she traded it for a Ninja 600 sports bike and dumped the boyfriend. She let a friend ride her bike and she was taking a short ride on his when the road suddenly ended, turning to gravel. With the combination of an unfamiliar bike, gravel and trying to turn quickly she crashed! It took a year to recover from her broken wrist, busted knee and scraped face. Although her home state of Indiana doesn’t require riders to wear a helmet she now does because of this accident. It wasn’t long before Danni was itching for a new bike. Since she’s been riding for over ten years now she’s begun to enjoy longer rides and the open road more than the speed of a sport bike. Without telling any of her friends she began shopping for a cruiser type bike. When she came riding up on her new black Harley-Davidson Softail Slim with her dreadlocks blowing in the wind her friends were stunned! She named the bike Medusa because of the way her hair looks while riding and the way her friends seemed to turn to stone at of her on her new bike. BTRthe 26 sight | BORNTORIDE.COM The longest ride Danni has done solo is from her home in Indianapolis to Cincinnati. She and her ‘old man’ often ride with BTR 36 | BORNTORIDE.COM
the club where they are members, but she also enjoys riding with women’s groups that she connected with online. One of the groups, Unique Queens inspired her biker name “Brown Sugaa.” She also sometimes rides with Divas United on Bikes and Black Girls Ride. Earlier this year Danni and another woman rode from Indianapolis to Memphis where they met up with about 20 other women through the group Black Girls Ride (BGR). From there they road in an escorted ride lead by a Slingshot three-wheel motorcycle, all the way to New Orleans. The scariest part of this ride for Danni was crossing Lake Pontchartrain on the world’s longest bridge! For 8 miles of the 24-mile bridge, you can’t see land in any direction. In NOLA they connected with approximately 200 BGR women who came in groups from other host cities to attend the Essence Festival. Not only were they able to enjoy the sisterhood of other black women motorcyclists but at the annual Essence Festival, known as the ‘party with a purpose,’ they shared a week of empowerment, educational seminars, entertainment, and an Essence Magazine photoshoot. A major highlight was the annual Black Women in Music event where they saw superstars such as Mary J. Blige, Erykah Badu and Janet Jackson. Through riding with various groups to events Danni “Brown Sugaa” and Medusa have connected with women across the country! Myra McElhaney

Your GPS May be Spying on You By Matt Danielson, The Motorcycle Law Group
Beware. Your GPS may be collecting evidence against you. More and more motorcyclists today are using GPS (Global Positioning Systems) to plan trips, get directions and keep track of miles traveled. However, keep in mind that if you are in a motorcycle accident, you may be collecting evidence that could be used against you in both a criminal and civil trial. Most GPS systems allow you to keep track of your speed. As such, they can be used as evidence in court. I have come across jurisdictions which, at the scene of an accident when speed is a question, will seize a crash victim’s GPS, get a search warrant, and download the information BTR 38 | BORNTORIDE.COM
pertaining to speed. Such action does more than subject the crash victim to a speeding ticket. It can, if the injured party was speeding, put their ability to collect damages for their injuries at risk. That means, if the party who injures you can show that you were in some way at fault in causing the accident, then depending on which state you were injured in, your claim can be reduced, or outright denied. Keep in mind that I am in no way suggesting that you should not use a GPS on your motorcycle. I am merely suggesting that if you do, keep in mind that depending on the system and how you use it, you could be collecting evidence that could
eventually be used by a party that injures you to avoid paying for the injuries they caused. If you have any further questions or comments concerning this article or any other matters concerning your rights as a motorcyclist, please do not hesitate to contact me. This month Born To Ride reviews the 1971 film “Psychomania.” If you like old British horror films, then this one’s for you. Maybe I should have said horrible old British films. Either way, Psychomania has a lot to like or dislike, depending on your level of intoxication. The film centers around the life of “Tom” who is the leader of a ‘motorcycle gang’ called the Living Dead. Tom and his ‘gang’ BTR 46 | BORNTORIDE.COM
ride authentic period Triumph motorcycles, and meet in a field with several large vertical stones which somewhat resemble Stonehenge. When they gather there, they often discuss what they will do in the particular day, but there is always talk of committing suicide, so they can live forever. Where could they get such an unsavory idea? From Tom’s occultist Mum of course! In a
dream like sequence, Tom has the pleasure of seeing his lovely Mum sign a deal with the Devil to have eternal life. His soul is assumed to be part of the deal, as there is a tot in a basket screaming as Mum signs the deal. All this weirdness is further accelerated by a frog. I dunno? It’s just strange. We’ll get to the Frog—plus stones thing later. On one particular day, Tom and his gang decide to ride through town and wreak havoc on the locals. They ride through a mall square like setting, tipping over shopping carts, baby carriages, and other things until the Bobbies arrive. A chase ensues and most of the members escape the long arm of the law. Tom hell-bent on killing himself rides his motorcycle through a guardrail and into the river. In a strange ritual, Tom is buried sitting upright on his motorcycle near the stones. His gang makes wreaths of flowers and other artifacts, which are buried with him as a guy plays the guitar and sings. Mum’s weird butler buries a frog necklace with him and all the other stuff. Later, a motorist breaks down near the stones, and has the horror of seeing Tom ride his motorcycle out of the grave. He of course is struck by the speeding Triumph and assumed dead. Tom then proceeds to call home from a local public house, and speaks to the butler and his Mum. Later he kills several people from the pub, and escapes into the night. The next day he arrives at the stones where the gang is trying to figure out who stole Tom’s body, and motorcycle. Thinking Tom is the thief, the gang begins questioning him and one of the members sneaks up to stab him in the back. This is where they realize that Tom had really come back from the dead. Seeing how cool it is to be immortal, the rest of the gang sets out to be just like Tom and each one kills him or herself in increasingly more bizarre ways. All succeed but Tom’s girlfriend, who after a failed attempt, really wants to live a normal life. In the end Tom gives her the ultimatum to join him in the ‘living dead.’ While she is deciding what to do with the gun he has handed her, his lovely Mum performs a ritual which turns her into a frog, and the rest of the ‘dead gang’ into stones while she shoots Tom. Sound confusing? Yeah, it does to me too! I guess the moral of the story is: Don’t feel too froggy, cause you might get stoned. …
THE PHANTOM MOVIE REVIEW
Do you have a favorite Biker Movie we don’t have? Let us know: info@borntoride.com
Christian Motorcyclists Association “The Lord has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy.” We must become mature in our hearts and minds and learn to see the good things God has done for us. God has a plan for us; He wants us to be happy and joyful. The cool thing is that most of the time it is simply a matter of attitude. If we make it a habit of looking for the good in life, we often find that goodness, in abundance. Unfortunately, the same holds true for finding the ugly and negative. They can be found just by looking for them. If we pay attention to what God is actively doing in our lives, we can see His incredible love and mercy. He does the good things for us that we might be blessed and full of joy! I know you might say that bad things still happen to us, that is where we learn and grow. The old saying tells us that without the deep valleys that we walk in life we can never learn to appreciate the mountaintop experiences. When we have learned to walk in both journeys, we are better able to see God at work! When we watch Him, we can’t help but find ourselves full of joy. Where’s your focus - on the positive aspects of life, or looking down and focusing on the difficulties of life? Time after time He has blessed me, abundantly, and His loving kindness has never left me. When the showers of life drench you on a ride, just remember to have a positive outlook. With God, great things are just around the bend! In The Wind, Denny Dingler Check out BornToRide.com for more articles from Christian Motorcyclists Association
Years ago, I took a long ride to see someone who was important to me. It was only 80 miles, but in that distance, my rear sprocket came loose and needed fixing on the shoulder of the road. That wasn’t too bad, but I also got rained on three times on the ride yet was actually dry upon arrival. Unfortunately, I had an immature heart and was focusing more on the challenges and hardships. I was focused on the fact that having a sprocket come loose while traveling at highway speeds could have been dangerous, and I could have been hurt. I ignored the fact that while I did get drenched on the ride, when I arrived, due to the sunshine and a warm summer day, I was completely dry. With the three showers I rode through, I think I actually smelled better on arrival than at the start of the journey. It was so easy to complain about the difficulties I had faced, rather than getting excited that I was safe and got to my destination unharmed. My focus was on simply paying attention to what went wrong rather than what went right! As we walk through life, we must pay attention to what good is going on around us. In the Bible, in Psalm 126:3, it says, BTR 48 | BORNTORIDE.COM
