The Sleepy Commuter You’re riding your motorcycle to work just after sunrise, traveling down a typical suburban street lined with car-filled driveways. As you approach one of these driveways a car begins to move and backs out directly into your path. You brake hard and come to a stop just inches away from the car’s rear bumper. Strategy: Given the hour of day and the type of neighborhood, you could have expected to encounter at least a few drivers backing out of their driveways and heading off to work. Clues include drivers getting into their cars as you approach, or a tell-tale puff of exhaust warning you that the car has been started and is preparing to leave. Watch for brake lights and backup lights, too. If you observe any of the above warning signs, take the following precautions: Slow your pace and prepare to stop, if necessary. Keep your eyes up and cover the front brake lever and rear brake pedal. Stabilize your speed so that if the car does begin to move out into your path, you have sufficient space to stop. If there isn’t room or time to slow to a stop, scan for an escape route to swerve into. If there is no oncoming traffic, swerve to the left; if this route isn’t available, consider swerving to the right. Info: www.msf-usa.org
Kyle Petty’s 25th Annual Charity Ride Lead 250 Riders Through 11 States in Nine Days Covering Approximately 3,700 Miles. Former NASCAR driver and NBC Sports racing analyst Kyle Petty celebrated the 25th anniversary of his annual Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America by leading the longest route in the Ride’s history. As one of the most successful and popular charity rides in the country, the Ride traveled a true corner-to-corner route across the United States – starting in Seattle, Washington, on May 3 and ending in Key Largo, Florida, on May 11. On this milestone anniversary route, Petty lead 250 participants, including more than 30 new Riders, through 11 states in nine days. Presented for the seventh year in a row by Manheim®, North America’s leading provider of used vehicle services and the host of two stops along the route at Manheim Seattle and Manheim Tampa,
the Ride traveled nearly 3,700 miles to raise funds and awareness for Victory Junction – a camp dedicated to providing life-changing camping experiences for children with chronic or life-threatening illnesses. Traveling from Washington to Florida, this year’s trek will be offered a variety of incredible scenic views. From the beauty of the Pacific Northwest and the red rock terrain in Utah to the Colorado hot springs and the Rocky Mountains to the North Central Plains of Texas and the Louisiana bayou, and onto the Everglades and sunny Florida beaches, Petty concurs this 25th Anniversary Ride was the ride of a lifetime. Spectators along the 2019 route were encouraged to attend one of the Ride’s nine overnight stops to greet Petty and the riders. on the ride and commented “This was the ride of a lifetime, truly! We covered 11 states and every type of terrain imaginable: from mountains, canyons, plains, bayous, and Everglades. Surprisingly, the biggest challenge was the weather throughout Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi; as a Floridian I thought surely the cold weather in the PNW would be the hardest to deal
with, but it was a breeze compared to the tornadoes, violent crosswinds and torrential downpour that came once we started heading east across the southern states. Above everything, the part of this experience for which I am most grateful is becoming a part of the incredible group of people who make up the KPCR family. I was honored to have been chosen as the Angel Rider for
this very special 25th Anniversary ride by David Andreas. Unfortunately, David passed away before the ride - so I rode in his memory and was fortunate enough to have his family waiting at the finish line for me in Key Largo. I was overwhelmed by the sense of support and welcoming I felt from the first day and the sadness I felt on the last day when we realized we were going

back to our normal lives. This was the most well-organized event I’ve ever been a part of and the kindness and generosity of this group were inspiring. I encourage everyone to check out www.victoryjunction. org to learn more about this amazing cause and what can be done to help support this life-changing camp for seriously ill children and their families.”
Because of the Ride, 8,185 children have attended Victory Junction at no cost to their families. Victory Junction is a year-round camping environment for children, ages six to 16, with chronic medical conditions or serious illnesses. Co-founded by Kyle Petty and his family in honor of their son Adam, the camp is located in Randleman, North Carolina. Last year alone, the Ride raised
$1.3 million and sent 100 children to Camp. Victory Junction has served as the Ride’s primary beneficiary since its establishment by Petty and his family in 2004 in honor of his late son, Adam. In May, a group of 36 boating industry execs and friends gathered from eight states in the Great Smoky Mountains to celebrate our love of boating and motorcycling as part of the fifth annual Hull of a Tour series, with this year’s theme aptly dubbed the “Dragon’s Roar.” The week-long adventure followed four previous national events including the original Hull of a Tour, a 3,000-mile cross-country ride from Florida to California; the Freedom Ride, from Florida to Washington DC including participation in Rolling Thunder; Pacific Coast Rush, from Seattle to San Francisco; and The Lobster Roll, featuring four New England states. The unique aspect of our tour is we combine a taste of boating infused with a steroid injection of motorcycling to whet the appetite and unleash the spirit of our riders. Besides experiencing some of the best roads in the nation, we’ve enjoyed chartered harbor cruises in San Francisco and Newport, RI, toured regional hotspots in sexy sport boats, taken a sunset toast aboard a 90’ houseboat in TX, and watched a command performance of the Blue Angels aboard a fleet of Freedom Boat Club powerboats in Annapolis, among others.
BRIEF TOUR BACKGROUNDER My partner in the Hull of a Tour series is Jim Krueger, a former boating industry sales and marketing exec who retired earlier this year after a stellar career. He took me for a casual spin on his Harley a dozen years ago and changed my life forever. I took the classes, bought my first bike and was raring to ride across America. I pestered Jim until he finally gave in and planned the route. We invited a few boating friends to come aboard. The success and industry buzz grew, as did the interest, demand, and participation. Jim serves as route planning guru and road captain, while I handle event marketing, PR and sponsorships. While it’s always a lot of work, it’s been nothing short of a labor of love to produce each Hull of Tour.

IRON HORSE HEADQUARTERS Unlike previous tours that required advance booking of overnight stops, we did something different this year. We chose to headquarter our crew at the Iron Horse Motorcycle Lodge & Resort in Robbinsville, NC, which caters exclusively to the biker community. From this hub, we launched day trips into three states. Based on my experience as a meeting planner and from the feedback from tour attendees, this decision was a winner! The Iron Horse offered a mix of private cabins, motel rooms, RV and tent camping plus a bunkhouse, all spread out on a spacious, private compound. The accommodations were clean, comfortable and perfectly suited our group needs. One of the best features is the lodge itself which houses a fun game room with card and pool tables; a private movie room (we hosted a movie night complete with popcorn and watched Wild Hogs); group meeting space; a large dining room with big screen TV; plus a great outdoor firepit situated adjacent to Stecoah Creek which runs through the property. The opportunity to relax around the roaring campfire was a big hit! The lodge also offers optional meal service; the food was priced right and tasty. In addition, I booked three private catered parties through Iron Horse that were awesome. The opening night feast sponsored by Evinrude/BRP featured traditional North Carolina barbeque with all the trimmings; the family-style dining night with Southern fixings was held at neighboring Wolf Creek Café right down the road; and a grand finale steak cookout sponsored by Sea Tow featured mouth-watering, aged rib-eyes that dwarfed the plates. stars! In fact, kudos to the new ownership and management at the Iron Horse. The team was top notch and responsive to our needs. THE DRAGON’S ROAR Enough about the background, awesome venue and the staff. We all came for one primary purpose and that was to get our fix and fill of adventure; we came to ride! While this year’s tour was the shortest in our series – five full days of riding – it was action-packed. Jim spent months researching boundless options as there are dozens of spectacular roads in the region. Day One – North Carolina Our first day was designed to get our sea legs beneath us. The warm-up featured an easy mountain run in prep for more challenging twists and turns ahead. We rode North Carolina through the quaint towns of Topton, the famous Wayah Road, Franklin, Highland, Cashiers, Sylva and Robbinsville. We throttled beneath dappled, canopied trees and tight winding roads all along the scenic Nantahala Forest, enjoying a refreshing breath of coolness from the adjacent Ocoee River. We hiked down to Dry Falls, located three miles north of the Highlands, and discovered the majestic waterfall you can walk under that cascades over a cliff. We wrapped up the ride along the storied State Road 107.
Day Two – Georgia Dragon We set out to conquer the first of two dragons: the Georgia Dragon is also known as the Suches Loop. Our 236-mile round trip rendezvous took us from base camp along Highway 190 through Topton, Andrews, Marble and Murphy, NC to Blairsville, GA and the legendary Richard B. Russell Scenic Highway. We rode 14 miles along SR 348 through the Chattahoochee National Forest, climbing to its top elevation of 3644 feet. We cruised alongside lush greenery, catching occasional glimpses of the Nottely River. We experienced 50 miles of exhilarating twists and fast turns all along Blood Mountain, coupled with steep elevation changes. Yeah, baby … seven sweet hours of riding nirvana! Day Three – Tail of the Dragon & Tennessee We specifically planned to ride the infamous Tail of the Dragon mid-week to minimize traffic; it was a smart move as we virtually owned the mountain! More than 30 riders from our group from as far away as Illinois and Wisconsin climbed on their trusty steeds -- including Harleys, BMWs, Yamahas, Hondas and a Can-Am -- to take care of business. Among the group were five designated “dragon virgins” who came prepared to slay the beast. We stopped first to grab souvenir trinkets and to take obligatory photos in front of the tree of shame and metallic dragon art. After a series of high fives, riders set out one by one to face the
Dragon in all its glory … 11 winding miles with 318 thrilling curves and switchbacks. All rose to the occasion! Our dragon slayer victory celebration included a robust buffet luncheon at Calhoun’s Restaurant on the waterfront in Lenoir City, TN, hosted by our boating sponsor, Malibu Boats. To get there, we cruised 1.5 hours along the lazy Tennessee River on Highway 72, and then shot up to 95 and 321amid gentle hills and cow pastures, quite a stark departure from the morning’s heart-pumping terrain. Following lunch, our group boarded several top-of-theline Malibu models including the Wakesetter 24 MXZ and experienced the best wake surfing this side of Hawaii! Malibu provided a top-notch instructor and surfer to show us how it’s done. Several adrenaline junkies took on new thrills … and we saw plenty of spills! Offshore boat owner and avid Poker Runner Jim Archambault of Georgia emerged the kingpin; he took home bragging rights for the best – and only – successful wake surf of the day! After cruising Lake Tellico a few hours, it was time to pack up and hit the highway. We cruised through the Cherokee and Nantahala National Forests, along the spectacular Cherahola Highway (my fave!). Here we reached the stunning 5400-foot summit while breathing in the beauty of seemingly endless vistas and fresh mountain air. Day 4 – Maggie Valley & Wheels Through Time Museum We rode over and spent a thoroughly enjoyable morning at the Wheels Through Time Museum in Maggie Valley, dubbed “the

Our last hurrah home was a joyful mix of easy sweeps coupled with a few tantalizing twists and turns. It was the perfect way to wrap a fantastic week. SPECIAL THANKS & RECOGNITION Hull of a Tour 5 is now in the history books, but once again, it brought together a group of passionate people who love their bikes, boats and epic adventures in the great outdoors. Old friendships were renewed, new friendships were made, and memories were created on the open roads and waterways that will never be forgotten, museum that runs,” since 99 percent of the exhibits are in running condition. I’ve biked and vacationed in this area previously but never carved out time to visit. So glad we did! Our group was treated to a vast collection of fabulous eye candy including more than 320 vintage through modern American motorcycles and automobile. All the exhibits were bona-fide museum-quality and each told amazing stories of the machines and the people who built and rode them. Founder Dale Walksler has created a truly stunning collection and one that is well worth your time. Following the tour and lunch, we took our time and lazily ambled through Cherokee and the surrounding mountains. Day 5 – Clingman’s Dome Our final ride was slated to run through the Great Smoky Mountain National Park to Clingman’s Dome and then on to Gatlinburg and back. However, the weather forecast was iffy so we settled for an early ride to Clingman’s Dome. It was fantastic! We shot up 19 and 441 to the intersection of North Carolina and Tennessee, then challenged seven curvy miles on Clingman’s Dome Road. We parked and set out on foot to hike to the summit, huffing and puffing all the way, straight up a very steep, half-mile trail. Clingman’s Dome Observation Tower is perched at the highest peak of the Smokies at a lofty elevation of 6643 feet. It is the highest point in the state of Tennessee, the third highest in Eastern North America and the pinnacle of the Appalachian Trail. At the observation deck, we were able to view 100 miles in some spots, while in others, we were literally blanketed in clouds. It was awesome! Special thanks to our tour sponsors who allowed us to thoroughly live life to its fullest for five fun-filled days. Perhaps the Sea Tow custom tour banner best captured the spirit of our tour: “On a Bike or on a Boat, No One Ever Asks, ‘Are We There Yet?’ Enjoy the Ride!” Hull of a Tour 5 was powered by Title Sponsor Evinrude/BRP; additional sponsors included Sea Tow; Malibu Boats; Emerald Coast Marine Group; Boogey Lights; Jim Krueger Photography; Kenton Smith Marketing; and this year, we were especially pleased to welcome aboard Born To Ride magazine! Wanda Kenton Smith loves nothing more than to ride “Purplicious,” her Harley Davidson CVO Fat Boy. My travels included a ride up to Cartersville, GA to visit Southern Devil Harley-Davidson, who hosted the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association 3rd Annual RIDE 4 LIFE. This included live music by Double Barrel, a car and bike show, bikini bike wash, and a mechanical bull. “Save a Hog … Ride a Bull,” is their slogan. All proceeds from this event went to support local veterans and Healing 4 Heroes. What a great cause. They get my support. Do you enjoy your freedom? Thank a vet! Wait … that’s NOT what it seems.

Yeah, I was excited, thinking about the “Christmas in July” sale, the pretty girls in bikini’s washing hogs, and of course the free hot dogs! Free food always gets me excited! But it was that downpour of rain I rode into after merging onto GA 400, and up the road maybe a half-mile, that got me soaked! But that’s alright. I was dressed for success in my cutoff sleeveless t-shirt and patched up blue jeans. At least I was wearing my HarleyDavidson waterproof boots! My feet stayed dry. And I like that. Continued...

Luckily for me & you, the torrential downpour gave me a much-needed chance to try my new Metzler Cruisetec tires in the rain. The tires worked well. No slippin’ or slidin’, and most importantly for me, no hydroplaning. Emergency braking was no problem. For the last few months, in all types of riding conditions, the Metzler’s have worked flawlessly. My kind of tire. Arriving at Frazier’s, the sun is now out and I’m already dry, the very first thing that caught my attention was the bikini bike wash. How in the heck did I notice that FIRST? Maybe it was the beautiful Harley that was currently being washed? I dunno. Lucky for you, I snapped a couple of photos to share and maybe get your opinion. What do you think? THE “GOOD NEWS” IS … that’s what the Christian Motorcycle Association was sharing with the visitors at Frazier’s, along with serving delicious hot dogs, chips, and BTR 32 | BORNTORIDE.COM
cookies. What more could a man, or woman ask for? Food for the soul, and food the stomach. Oh yeah! Fabulous. Employees inside Frazier’s were busy taking care of customers. I managed to pull a couple of the guys, and gals, aside to pose for some photos. Great lookin’ crew in all departments: sales, accessories, and service. All areas seemed extremely knowledgeable about ALL aspects of HarleyDavidson motorcycles. Can you tell? I had a GREAT time at Frazier’s! That’s not all. Earlier in the month, I stopped in at G&G Cycles of Roswell, just down the road from Killer Creek HarleyDavidson, for their customer appreciation party. Celebrating their 2nd Anniversary, G&G offered free wings and beer to all of their new and existing customers. Along with a bikini bike wash, free giveaways and live music all day long. That’s the way to party, G&G!
What a Great Country we live in! The freedom we’re able to enjoy each and every day, like no other country in the world. I hope that we always remember that “Freedom ain’t Free.” Which leads me to the 3rd Annual Car, Truck and Motorcycle Show Benefitting Veterans with PTSD. The show was held at Tubby’s Tavern on Hwy 92 in Douglasville, GA. This place is veteran owned and operated. Great location for the show. They had live music, door prizes, and a wellattended “Pin-Up” contest. All Proceeds from this event benefit Healing4Heroes, a nonprofit organization that helps veterans with PTSD by providing rescued Service Dogs. Great cause! I’m very glad I was able to attend and support. Oh, look at the time now, will you. I gotta go, I hear my Road King calling … until next month, “keep your knees in the breeze and stay riding free.” JP

confidence and helped to clear her head with a little ‘wind therapy.’ She would love to do a long ride out west someday but running two businesses keeps her busy for now. For twenty years she’s owned and operated a web development company called Bella Design. A few years back after taking classes in calligraphy as a creative outlet, Desiree established Inkwell Designs—an artist event agency. From a hobby to a growing family business Inkwell Designs provides embossing, engraving, painting for corporate gifts and on-site events. At Inkwelldesigners. com you can see how she’s turned this into a thriving family business serving Fortune 500 clients. Combining her business with a love for motorcycles Desiree was thrilled to do a project for Triumph Motorcycles where she engraved wine bottles that were given to their executives.
At age 45 when Desiree Colonna lost her husband to suicide and was left with two teenage girls to raise, she felt lost. Reminded of her how she loved riding on her brother’s motorcycle as a teen, she took the MSF class to do something she’d always wanted for herself and to give her something new to focus on. She passed the class the first time but wasn’t comfortable with the clutch and gears she signed up again. The instructor took extra time explaining that to her to make sure she got it. Proud of learning to ride, Desiree bought a big Harley-Davidson Switchback. A big bike for a beginner. She dumped it on her first ride and had to have someone else drive it home. She bought a Yamaha VIRAGO 250 and rode it around her neighborhood to learn. Her next bike was a Moto Guzzi V-7 Racer. In 2018, when Triumph introduced the Bonneville Speedmaster, she purchased the second one sold in Georgia. Although
she still owns and sometimes rides the Moto Guzzi V-7 Racer she considers the Triumph Bonneville Speedmaster to be ‘her’ bike. When Desiree bought her Speedmaster her new partner Joe went along on his bike. The guys at the dealership suggested that they drive up to North Georgia and ride the Suches Loop. The two-lane highway of 15 mph curves and hairpin turns was much more challenging than they expected. For an inexperienced rider on a new bike, it was terrifying! “I wanted to stop and cry,” Desiree admitted. But there wasn’t another way back home, so she gripped the handlebars of her new bike and kept going. “I did it!” Desiree said. “I survived that so I can do anything!” That risky ride early on gave her the confidence to keep riding. Although she rides mostly around her local area, Desire committed to riding every day, even if it was only for a half-hour or so. The daily riding helped to build her skill and

Christian Motorcyclists Association, “Fix our eyes on Jesus.” Years ago, when I decided to start riding again, I discovered that I had to take a riding course to get a certificate to get a motorcycle endorsement. I called around and found the opportunity to take a short refresher course with an instructor and then pass a riding test in order to get that necessary piece of paper. During the refresher course, the instructor covered several basic riding truths, ideas that I had never known about in previous years. I had, in ages past, learned to ride a dirt bike and without further training, got a street bike and a license. The trainer showed me panic braking, crisp turns, and everybody’s favorite maneuver, the U-turn. He shared from his experience and really opened my mind to important concepts concerning safe riding. He even showed me how easily the movements could be made on his 800-pound Harley, as opposed to the little 300-pound bike I was using for the class. Perhaps the most important thing I learned during the time I spent with the instructor was the concept of where my eyes go, so my bike goes. It seemed counter-intuitive to not look at that BTR 48 | BORNTORIDE.COM
big telephone pole on the side of the road, not that far from where my turn will take me. The bottom line was that looking where I was going worked! The idea was to take a quick glance at my path of travel, then look higher towards where I intend to end up. Once one can get used to not watching things like curbs, signage, and other items along the roadside, the path of travel becomes incredibly safer. Simply put, we need to fix our eyes on our target. One day when practicing riding inside of a 24-foot circle to prepare for a trip to the mountains, my mind slipped, and I looked down. Even though I knew where to keep my eyes focused, in just a flash of a moment I looked down from my target and the next thing I knew I was on the ground. When I looked down the bike cooperated, and we went down! So it is in our lives, In Hebrews 12:2, we are challenged to “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus.” I have learned that whenever things go haywire, whenever the world just does not make sense, or when we find ourselves at the end of hope, we must simply focus our vision on the One who can fix it all, Jesus! I have discovered that if my eyes are on Jesus, I find life makes more sense, and I have peace. Likewise, if my eyes are not fixed on Him, I find that I am easily distracted, tempted to go the wrong way and do the wrong things. When my focus is right, my ride through life is a joy. Remember, where your eyes go, so does your ride go. Keep your eyes on Jesus!
