Imagine a typical scene from a nature-network documentary, one that shows a fur seal frantically swimming with a great white shark in ruthless pursuit, the huge snout of the shark filling the television screen. In the corresponding street scene, you’re riding your motorcycle down a wide arterial street when a huge sedan closes in on you, its grille filling your mirrors. Just as you change lanes to get out of this car-shark’s path, the tailgater also changes lanes behind you. What are your best strategies for avoiding (or evading) this situation? Strategy: As soon as you notice a tailgater approaching in your mirrors, take steps to get out of the way.

Activate your turn signal and make an obvious, decisive lane change to the right or left. If the car is already upon you before you notice its presence, take care before making a move to avoid the “shark pursuit” situation described above. When evading a shark, signal early and pause for just an instant (to make sure that the tailing driver isn’t also planning to change into the same lane) before making a definite and decisive move into the other lane. Your actions should clearly communicate your intentions to the other driver so he is fully aware of what moves you intend to make. Info: www.msf-usa.org

What a way to start the month of October than with a trip to the mountains of eastern Tennessee for the TENNESSEE MOTORCYCLES and MUSIC REVIVAL at the Loretta Lynn Ranch in Hurricane Mills. This year, it’s October 10th thru the 13th, I had the pleasure of attending this great and unique event last year. What an awesome location this event was—southwest of BTR 10 | BORNTORIDE.COM

Nashville with some great riding around the entire area. There was RV and tent camping galore with lots of space on the beautiful grounds of the Ranch. The Motorcycle portion of the Revival offered all kinds of fun and excitement from the BC Moto Invitational, Hillbilly Flat Track Racing, Rhett Rotten’s Wall of Death and all kinds of Biker related vendors. Harley-Davidson and Indian Motorcycles

had their Demo trucks set up offering test rides on the new models. Then there was the BC Moto Invitational, which featured over 40 Bike Builders from around the country and their incredible 2-wheeled rides set on display in a beautiful horse barn, with a custom bike in each and every stall. Walking through the barn and viewing these amazing machines and meeting the builders was certainly

a different way to look at a motorcycle build-off, but yet very entertaining to say the least. There were many other activities on the grounds to check out beside the Bike related ones, like the Loretta Lynn Western Town featuring a Country Store, the Loretta Lynn Museum, Loretta’s original Tour Bus, the Art Gallery and Camp Store at Stagecoach Hill. There was even a gun range where you

could shoot everything from Carbines, Shotguns, Belt-fed and Sub-machine guns! Plus, there were Specialty Food Trucks offering all different types of yummy menu choices and of course Cold Beer and full liquor bars to help wet your whistle throughout the entire event. As for the Music portion, there were so many talented musicians and groups to enjoy throughout the entire Revival

on stage at the famous Loretta Lynn Roadhouse. All in all, the TENNESSEE MOTORCYCLES and MUSIC REVIVAL offered something for everyone and I want to thank the promoters Carrie Repp and Buck Shaw for having me along for the Ride! This is a Rally not to Miss! Make plans Now! October 10th-13th.For more informaton on this years event go to MotorcyclesandMusic.com

ROLLING THUNDER was an idea started by Marine Vietnam Veteran Cpl Ray Manzo, who was

bothered by many of the remains of Vietnam veterans that were not being returned home or respectfully buried. There were also reports of live prisoners of war (POW) and missing in action (MIA) that were left behind when the war ended.

Ray took a trip to DC in 1987, met with co-founders, Army Sgt. Major John Holland, Marine 1st Sgt Walt Sides, and Army Sgt. Ted Sampley who are credited with originally starting Rolling Thunder. Manzo also established a friendship with Army Sgt. Artie Muller, who had a similar idea of a demonstration run in DC. The Rolling Thunder 1st Amendment or “Ride for Freedom” demonstration seeks to bring full accountability for POW and MIAs of all U.S. Wars. Manzo turned over Rolling Thunder to Artie Muller in 1992, who founded Rolling Thunder Inc. in 1995 that has more than 90 chapters in the world. After 32 years, Rolling Thunder Inc. said that this RT would be the last in DC. What started in 1988 with roughly 3,000 bikes had grown to over 500,000. Saturday would be a busy day at Harley-Davidson of Washington, DC (actually in Ft. Washington, MD). I rode to the dealership where a crowd was lined up inside the dealership waiting to see the “Saluting Marine,” SSgt. Tim Chambers. I asked him what he was going to do after this last event. “Take a break,” he said. This would be his 18th year saluting at the event.

Outside the dealership, a band was playing whose leader introduced Mathew Modine, who played “Joker” in the movie, Full Metal Jacket. My main attention was directed to a gated area of Rolling Thunder Inc. participants, where RT Inc. Executive Director, Artie Muller and actor Robert Patrick were. Robert starred in numerous movies and TV shows and is remembered as the T1000 cop that regenerated in Terminator 2. His last TV show was

BTR 20 | BORNTORIDE.COM

the FBI agent in “Scorpion” and a newly released movie with John Travolta and Morgan Freeman, The Poison Rose. He also rides to DC from California, where he was President of one of the oldest motorcycle clubs, “Boozefighters MC” (motto: “The Original Wild Ones”) that was made famous in the Brando movie, The Wild One. Their other motto is: “a drinking club with a motorcycle problem.”

Robert was interviewing Artie on camera as I listened to some of the ideas that RT Inc. was proposing. The costs of RT were getting prohibitive and lack of cooperation with the Pentagon police were some of the issues. Artie said that money could be better spent on Veterans. Each Rolling Thunder chapter could have their own venue in each State. He had also been approached by some Senators/ Congressmen of various States asking to hold a similar venue in their State. “Maybe a ride from one State, ending at another, could be a possibility. We will see if they back it up.” As Robert was taking to Artie, a tweet from President Trump came in that offered to help in any way to continue RT in DC. I handed it to Robert, who read it to Artie. Artie said he would be glad to meet with the President, but right now this was the last RT in DC. Another tweet came in later in the day where the President basically said this was not the last Rolling Thunder, but this is up to Rolling Thunder organizers. Artie said he hoped over 875,000 would show up this year. I met a lot of riders who came just because this was the last ride. Estimates were from 900,000 to 1 1/2 million bikes. We left the dealership and rode downtown to the venue of vendors, called “Thunder Alley.” The whole city was packed with

bikes. The official RT shirts had already run out Saturday noon and we scrambled for any kind of memorabilia for the last RT.

There are numerous Harley dealerships surrounding DC that ride into the Pentagon staging areas. They leave at different times so as not to jam up the Pentagon arrivals. That Sunday, we decided to ride in again from H-D of Washington. We left earlier this year at 8:30 AM. The attendance was so large, there were three groups from this dealership and the motor officer leading us got lost on the Capital beltline and made a wrong turn. We turned around at a median, as he led the 1,000 in our group back past where we started. He was the only escort and the bikes behind him didn’t know where to go, as he left them to wave off and block traffic. When we came over the bridge into DC, we had to wind around stopped traffic, who after the officer went by, was trying to move back into traffic. We finally made it across the bridge and were joined by a group from the Laurel, MD, dealership. We were supposed to have gone to the main North Pentagon lot, but because of the delay, didn’t even make it to the South lot and ended up in abandoned parking areas outside the South lot.

Bikes started at noon from the Pentagon, as a symbolic B-52, flew by the Pentagon. Rolling Thunder was named after the B-52 bombing runs during the Vietnam War. We finally started moving into the South lot, merging with others at 4:30 PM. Bikes were hot, we were hot, thighs were burning, but we finally made it out of the lot, across Memorial

Bridge, past the Saluting Marine at which I stopped and shouted, “Oorah,” to which, he in turn responded. Riding down Constitution Ave., by the Capitol and back on Independence Ave., past crowds that slapped our hands, we continued on near the Vietnam Wall and on to Arlington National Cemetery to visit with my family who is buried there. Was this the last Rolling Thunder XXXIII in DC? That remains to be seen.

As a youngster growing up, we were so fortunate to experience the joy and fun of camping. Every summer, my parents would take us on an adventure to places we would read about in school. Now that I’m older, the thought of getting back into camping – AND taking my motorcycle along – is more intriguing, thanks to my conversation with Marc McAdams of Creative RV Atlanta! Creative RV is an amazing company whose headquarters are located in Chino, California. “We are technically the largest bus sales company in the nation. We specialize in buses also; school buses, church buses, tour buses, etc., 35 years in buses. The RV side of the business is three years old. The way we got into the RV world is through a company called Forest River RV. They are an RV/Bus company (a Warren Buffett Company). They are the third-largest RV manufacturing company in the nation.” Forrest River approached Creative RV asking them to sell the RVs thanks to the reputation, manpower, facilities, etc. of Creative RV. “We have locations in Chino, CA, Washington state, Arizona, Atlanta, BTR 22 | BORNTORIDE.COM

Jacksonville, Florida, and a facility in Pennsylvania.” Marc was hired to run the RV side of the business. “I came from Maryland to Georgia. I am the manager for the east coast. My job is to build up the business on the east coast. There is another guy that mirrors my job out on the west coast. This year in May, we had matched the number in Atlanta from last year. We doubled our numbers before this year was over – thanks to the biker community!”

Travel & Adventure, The RV Lifestyle Coincides with the Biker Lifestyle

Marc was quick to mention that their success was due, in part, to Ron Galletti of Born To Ride. “It’s not through natural leads like Craig’s List, RV Trader, our website, etc. It’s because we are in the motorcycle community. We do bike events and did a Born To Ride event with Ron at the Great American Motorcycle Show here in Atlanta, showcasing our toy haulers for bikers.

Having a toy hauler AND your motorcycle can make all the difference in the world when you’re on a trip. “A lot of bikers have never been in a toy hauler. At our shows, we expose them to the toy hauler lifestyle and understanding that if at age 60, for example, you’re going to Sturgis, you don’t need to be riding. Having a toy hauler, you have your “motel,” your bike is not in the elements or in the threat of getting stolen or damaged, and you are living in luxury.” Most floor plans are pre-arranged. You can deviate from an established floor plan; if you want a king-sized bed versus a queen. But, if you want to get into changing color schemes, it’s not cost-effective. “All floor plans are going to have the same tank capacity. But the manufacturers have gotten away from doing one-off units. It’s a road we prefer not to go down because the costs are substantially more to the customer.” Toy haulers start at $22,000. This is a 26’ rig standing strong at 5,000 pounds. “You can put two Harleys in this rig AND it can be towed with a Ford F150/Chevy 1500 pickup truck! Payments are really low when purchasing a new toy hauler. It’s simple interest with no pre-payment penalties. If

your taxes are done properly, you can write off the first 5 years of interest because the IRS sees RVs as a home.” In order for the IRS to see this as a home, the RV has to have a bathroom, kitchen, and a place to sleep. It’s tax-deductible as a second home! Under $50,000 you can finance up to 15 years, over $50,000 you can finance up to 20 years. The Vengeance 5th wheeler, tri-axle RV (my personal favorite) is the most popular unit Marc sells. Selling at around $56,000, payments can be in the neighborhood of $400 or so a month. Marc explained, “Our price point starts at the low $20s to $100,000. We can fit any economic situation including finding the right RV for you and your truck.” Marc is a rider, owning a Hayabusa motorcycle. Technically, it’s the fastest production bike made, and he loves riding it! “I started riding at the age of eight with dirt bikes in Maryland where I grew up.” Why a toy hauler? “The RV lifestyle coincides with the biker lifestyle. Three of my new RV/toy hauler customers just returned from Sturgis. They were all together and met new people at the campsites they stayed at. In fact, they sent me pictures

of the little town they all created at this campsite! They didn’t need to get a hotel every night, they stayed in their RV, they were out of the elements because they were in their trucks, they get their bikes out and rode, came back to their little town with their little house, and it all just comes together. You find yourself seeking out other places to go! You want to be free and see stuff that you wouldn’t normally see as a typical person.” Normally, our vacations are based around an air flight and a rented car. Marc clarified, “You are limited. If the airport is a bit away from the ‘fun stuff,’ the best food, the best of America, you’re not going to see it because you’re basing a trip around that airport. Your hotel is in conjunction with the airport – and you’re limited. You have to check out at a certain time, you can’t bring your dog, you’re limited on how many people can stay in one room, etc. You have a rental car. You don’t have your stuff in your car, you may smoke but can’t in a rental car, you may have a limited amount of miles you can drive. Again, you’re restricted. With your own! toy hauler, you can avoid all the stuff we just mentioned

and do what you what, when you want! It changes the whole outlook by taking time off.” Quick weekenders are the most fun. If you own an RV, you can jump in the truck, drag the RV and head out to a place 45 minutes from home! It may cost you less than $100 for the weekend! Last thoughts today, Marc? “I’d like to convey that we are RVers. We live the lifestyle and we are bikers. We know how to maximize the fun level. When we share something with you, we are telling you the truth. This is our passion. Hopefully, it will be yours too! Why get caught in a torrential downpour on your motorcycle and stay at a nasty hotel? An RV will eliminate that trouble.” September 13-15 is the Georgia camper RV show. This will be held at the Cobb Galleria. Marc will have a dozen toy haulers at this show for you to enjoy! Be sure to tell Marc that you read this story in Born To Ride magazine. You will receive a unique Born To Ride pricing when you purchase a toy hauler at this event or at their showroom! Thank you, Marc, for sharing your story with the readers of Born To Ride magazine! Women’s World

There are so many of us that have lost people close to us. From a spouse, partner, best friend, and family, it doesn’t seem to get any easier. I had the pleasure of speaking with Myra McElhaney who many of you have read her articles in Born To Ride magazine. Well, we are turning the tables and interviewing her about her successful book, “Losing the Love of your Life.” Why did she decide to write this book? “It’s been 10 years since I lost my husband. At this stage in life, I’m meeting more and more women who have lost their spouse. In fact, in the past four months, two of my very close friends just lost their husbands. It seems never-ending.” For many years, Myra had been a corporate trainer, public speaker, and writer. “The articles that I wrote were specific to the groups I worked for. I also participated in compilation books where groups of people write specific chapters for the book. I had participated in these compilation books but had not written a “real” book of my own. After my husband died in 2009, I had been thinking about writing a book about women in business. Once he died, I couldn’t face looking at that book again. It brought up too many memories. Because of my business networking, I knew of someone that connects professionals to other professionals – in my case, obtaining an agent to help me with my book.”Myra got very active in social media with her networking, speaking engagements, and upcoming book project. “I didn’t want to be that depressed, moping widow. Folks were reaching out to me telling me stories about friends who had recently lost a loved one, sharing their stories with me. These folks wanted me to reach out and personally speak with those grieving individuals. I found out that I was giving them the same kinds of advice, saying the same, comforting things to them, recommendations to read specific articles, etc. Because writing and speaking was something that I already did, it was an

easy jump for me to write a book about my experience.” With Myra’s corporate background, it was always teaching leadership skills or how to create connections – that sort of thing. “I wanted to make sure that my book was a memoir – telling MY story. I believe that we learn from other people’s stories. When a story resonates with us, it doesn’t have to tell us how to use this information.

It’s more of an ‘Oh, she did that! Maybe I can do that, too!’ I also believe that when you’re widowed, you don’t totally lose your sense of humor. It’s ok to laugh through the tears. I wanted this book to be a test of my humor, warm and uplifting, and just one woman possibly telling a story that resonates with the reader. I tell the story with love and humor.” After the book was written, Myra started speaking at women’s groups around the country trying to help rebuild these women’s personal and social lives. “As you personally know, Susan, once you’ve lost your spouse, your social life changes. You’re no longer a couple with your friends. In fact, there is a chapter in the book called, ‘Was My Invitation Lost in the Mail?”’ Some of her Chapter Titles are excellent! In bed with Jose Cuervo, You Talking To Me?, My God, My God! Why Has Thou Forsaken Me?, Shock, Denial, and Prozac, Don’t Cry in the Liquor Store, I Have Strange Bedfellows, Layers of Lost, Condolences and Sympathies, Without

This Ring, and other great titles. As Myra was writing her book, she found that she was definitely healing within. “Six years after my husband died, I started writing the book. I thought I was pretty healed. But writing about those things brought up a lot of feelings and emotions that had not really healed. So writing and organizing the book was cathartic.” Myra found, from talking with so many people over the years, that the first year after a loved one dies, the wife/ husband wants to memorialize the late spouse. They want to build the house they planned on building together, build a monument, start a foundation – do something. That need to immortalize them tends to go away after the first couple of years. “After Phil had been gone for a while, many people thought I would get back into my corporate work. But what worked for ME was getting involved in non-profit work, fundraising, and my own writing projects.” In addition to a few other nonprofits Myra is involved with, she recently became involved on the board of a nonprofit called, Dress for Success. It was interesting to see how much Myra and I had in common; the loss of our husbands, published authors, public speakers, and motorcyclists. We spent a great deal of time sharing our pains and losses and how we were able to find that perfect spot where we heal and move forward. Interspersing humor in our conversation was an added plus! Myra’s book was self-published in 2016. She sells on Amazon and on Facebook Marketplace. If you are interested in reading a great book or giving this book to a friend, I highly recommend you purchase this great book! Thank you, Myra, for a wonderful afternoon discussing “Losing the Love of Your Life.” All of us in your Born To Ride Family love you and thank you for sharing your book with us – and the readership of the magazine! JP’s RAMBLIN’ ON... Salacoa Road

There. Now I said it. And I hope that I won’t lose my good buddy Glen, whom I used to work with at WOW Motorcycles, over this. It was our little secret spot to go riding up near Waleska, GA traveling west, over to Hwy. 441. Nice ride! Just for a short little afternoon trip from our homes in Marietta, GA it’s great. Take a right on 441 to the next road on the right, Irwin Mill Rd., and continue to Fairmont Rd., take a left and continue back to Salacoa Rd. Left on Salacoa and back to where we came from. WOW! Speaking of WOW, how about the WOW Motorcycle company? You should stop in and say “HI” to my buddies Glen, Mike and of course James. Seems like EVERYBODY around here knows James. Ask for my personal mechanic and good friend, Jose. Definitely a Harley Master Mechanic. On our way up to Salacoa Rd., we found another little gem of a road, Little Refuge Rd. Keep in mind, these are kicked back, slow speed (generally), relaxing type roads BTR 30 | BORNTORIDE.COM

for a laid back afternoon ride. And I know of lots more interesting roads that I’ll be sure to share with you in the future. Check these roads out on a map, and go have some fun. Let me know how your ride went. In August I headed up to Southern Devil Harley-Davidson for their “Rockabilly Rumble” event on the 10th. I saw a lot of folks that I knew, all having a great time! Good music provided by Slim and the Gems, good food, and of course good adult beverages. They featured a bikini bike wash that seemed to have men crowded around all afternoon. Also on the schedule was a Car and Bike show with awards for Best Rod and Best Bike. For dads with sons and daughters, they had the “Koolest” pedal car contest. And for all the pretty ladies, Ms. Buttercream Bettie, a contest that drew a very large, appreciative, crowd. I also stopped in to their sister store, Hellbender Harley-Davidson, for an afternoon of “Bikes, Babes, Bands and BBQ”. Who could go wrong with that combo? And I had a chance to see my friend “JB”,

doing his thing for the parts department. Nice guy, stop in and say “hi”. You’ll be glad you did. Later in the month, Killer Creek HD presented us with their Rockabilly Rollout (notice a common theme here?) that provided all in attendance with a good time Sunday afternoon. Pretty ladies, beautiful cars on display and of some really “hot” bikes. Topping off my month was a meeting with Marc at Creative RV in Atlanta. Whatta great guy…whatta cool Harley….and talk about RV’s, it seems to me that he’s got ‘em all. Man, what a variety, including travel trailers, fifth wheels and toy (I think he said Harley) haulers. Before you go on your next trip, or if you are out riding your bike, stop in and see Marc. It will be an experience that you won’t soon forget. But now, it’s a beautiful, sun shining day and I’ve gotta ride. See ya! So until next month, “keep you knees in the breeze and stay riding free”. JP

Ted Nugent has carved a permanent place in rock n’ roll history as the ultimate guitar-shredding showman, selling more than 40 million albums and performing in excess of 6,700 (and counting!) highoctane live shows. As a budding musician, Nugent was strongly influenced by Chuck Berry and Bo Diddly and knew he wanted to pursue that type of sound and attitude. Early bands, The Royal Highboys, and The Lourds paved the way for the Amboy Dukes - and their psychedelic JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE MIND kicked young Ted’s career into hyperdrive. The axe maniac soon broke out as a solo artist, where the guitarist’s prodigious talent, “earshattering” volume and over-the-top stage antics quickly earned him the moniker of Motor City Madman. So how was my chat with the “Motor City BTR 34 | BORNTORIDE.COM

Madman”? Here it is verbatim no filters (sensitive natures advised): NT: The most meaningful song you wrote? What was it about and why was this song the most meaningful? Ted: “I have so many wonderful songs that I absolutely crave and each one played a powerful role in my American musical dream. Everyone by now knows my love and admiration for the great Fred Bear and the emotion in that song every time I unleash it. We captured its essence on both the original, and on the new definitive acoustic performance with all the fire and passion celebrated by all hands-on conservation families that grasp, participate, and cherish this perfect hunting lifestyle. Every song we perform gets a musician’s

dream response, but the mighty FRED BEAR song connects deeply with audiences across the land.” NT: Best memories as a child? Why? How has it impacted you up to this day? Ted: “I was born in 1948 to a father already following in the footsteps of the great Fred Bear. The mystical flight of the arrow took hold of me immediately and expanded each year of my life. Kid’s bow and arrow sets and Wham-O slingshots quickly morphed to yew longbows and eventually Wing, Bear, and Shakespeare recurves. obvious duty of good defeating evil. I was not drafted during the Vietnam War, but I have served my country and the warriors to the best of my ability my entire adult life. There can be no better definition of my commitment to all those U.S. military heroes than my respect for and acceptance by them. I have personally touched and been inspired by literally thousands of these selfless people.” NT: Do you ride motorcycles? If so, what is it? Favorite rides and what feelings do riding cause from within? Ted: “I don’t ride, but many of my friends do. My manager is a long-time rider, and I have friends who are passionate collectors of all-things Harley-Davidson.” NT: Among other things you are also known to be a political activist. What do you want to say to our readership of all political spectrums? Ted: “We see the three arms of our government that were put in place for checks and balances turning into one big ugly unaccountable monster that believes it can get away with anything it damn well pleases. And let this be a warning to our elected employees out there; we are fed up and we’re not going to take it anymore. Thank God for the great President Donald Trump finally doing something America can be proud of.” safaris “Up North” and the life-changing introduction to Fred Bear, and as they say, the rest is history. My extreme fascination with wildlife, wildness, bowhunting, and my dedication to the healthiest diet available to mankind today is more exciting than at any time in my 70-year American Dream.” NT: If you had an opportunity again, would you enlist in the military? Ted: “When I was of military age, I was clueless about the history of war or the U.S. military. Knowing what I know now about U.S. warriors for freedom and their dedication and sacrifice for our American dream, if I could go back in time, I would certainly have enlisted for World War II, and the war on terror for the glaringly

wonderful people who actually know me as the loving, giving, caring, hardworking, take no shit patriotic American who never gave up and created nonstop amazing shitkicker soul-music. That’s my legacy and it is untouchable.”

NT: If you had an opportunity to serve on a humanitarian mission, what would it be, where and how? Ted: “I’ve had that opportunity! On a USO tour with Toby Keith, I traveled to every military camp throughout Iraq and Afghanistan and beyond, performing for and connecting with our brave military hero warriors. It was certainly a highlight of my life.” NT: What do you look forward to doing in your spare time during your tour?

NT: The most powerful meaningful things you taught your children? How has it impacted them? Ted: “Dedicate your entire life to be solidly [rooted] in the asset column by being the absolute best you can be, clean and sober, for your family, neighbors, community, country and the good earth. Aspire to an omniscient level of awareness so you can be accountable for every step you take and every decision you make in life. All my sons and daughters are wonderful, positive, caring, loving, hardworking, cocky, funny, ass-kicking productive Americans.”

Ted: “When I am on tour it is 100% dedicated to the music every night. The rest of the year, I hunt, fish, trap, and participate in God’s miraculous tooth fang and claw creation as the reasoning predator He made me.”

NT: How do you want to be remembered? What legacy do you want to leave behind for your family, friends, and fans?

Today, every single one of my children has their own electric guitar. Do I have one? I have a good old acoustic that I’ve been playing on and off since 1990. Pursue your dreams folks! Relentlessly!

In the beginning (of the summer) there was light

And then, the skies grew dark and angry rain and storms came down drenching us in voluminous amounts of water that seems to be incessant and often dangerous. No, this isn’t an adaptation, translation, or convolution of a scripture that could be found in the Bible; it is simply the observation of an old fool who has lived here in ‘paradise’ for many, many years. We all deal with it and in the summer sometimes daily, but when you are on your motorcycle it can often become quite dangerous at times. Historically the deluge starts at about the time when we are heading home from work. Despite having a nice rain suit, a (non-required) helmet and a set of selfcleaning goggles, the angry water can get so heavy that we often think that we should just park somewhere and wait it out. But

this alternative can in some cases become financially draining – especially if you decide to wait it out at the local gentlemen’s club or tavern. So, as a solution to the situation, I recently decided to add a snorkel to my rain attire so that I can strategically place it over my shoulder and behind my head so I don’t inhale a ton of rain and road backwash. Both are problematic and add to the misery of the otherwise enjoyable journey back home. I know – it’s just food for thought – but for some reason I believe it may just work. I will get back to you on this, or you can always reach out to me through the magazine, website, or radio show to tell me that my ideas are idiotic. It’s all good. We all need to think about being safe out there on the road. It’s too bad that we have to share the road with people who

have no consideration for others. Especially bikers. If I had one dollar for every time that I have heard “I didn’t see the motorcycle,” I would be a millionaire and not have to worry about trying to make a buck by working and such. I even tried playing the lottery. That never seems to play out too well, so that is likely the reason I call it a “stupid tax” and refuse to spend my last dollar to try to get lucky. I never expected to be rich anyhow, so I just keep dragging on and trying to buy groceries. I know that I am not the only one in this situation so we will all just keep keeping on. Speaking of keeping on. The only thing that’s worse than getting drenched every day is the impending possibility of doom due to the hurricane season. Should we be unfortunate enough to have a hurricane hit our precious state, the consequences could be dangerous and as you all know – historically disastrous. I remember years back when I wrote about my big hurricane parties fueled by lots of beer, wing restaurant girls, and the occasional employee of a gentlemen’s club. All that aside, it is truly a situation that can be at the very least – worrisome. I have a simple plan for evacuation should the worst happen: “Grab beer – run like hell” – it’s a plan that seems to make sense and will likely keep me protected from whatever impending disaster the storm brings. I typically won’t run away from a cat 1 or cat 2 hurricane but there is always a possibility of bad luck during this time of year. Just keep your eyes and ears open and do whatever is necessary to survive! The potential season only lasts for a few more months so for now, we can just pay our dues riding in the obligatory daily complementary bike wash. Just avoid the ‘spin cycle’ after the dry cycle. … Until next month, ‘speed safely and tune in to the radio show!’ CRAVEN BORNTORIDE.COM | BTR 47

Christian Motorcyclists Association, Do You Have a Right to be Angry? As we ride and enjoy being in the wind, we occasionally experience dangerous driving habits of those around us. No matter how well we watch the road, and the traffic on it, it only takes one person in a hurry to ruin our day. Just this morning I watched a cager aggressively weave his vehicle in and out of the traffic. The sad part is that in five miles of hogging the road and cutting people off that driver had only added 2 car lengths to his position. In that early morning travel, many folks were probably angered by the assertive driving. One thing that really frustrates me is when I am on my bike, at a stoplight, and someone in a big car or four-wheeldrive truck pulls right up behind me. I know they can see me because my bike is loaded with various lights. My bet is that they have never given thought to what would happen if their foot slipped off the brakes, or they accidentally hit the gas pedal. I usually give the throttle a quick blip and roll forward a few feet to add to the visibility of my bike. You no doubt know what is coming next; they roll their vehicle forward, right behind BTR 48 | BORNTORIDE.COM

my bike. Do I get angry, do I get frustrated, and is my ride no longer fun and enjoyable? All I’m trying to do is to soak up the beauty of nature around me, while someone is carelessly putting my life in danger! Then I remember that I don’t know everything that is going on in the lives around me, that careless driver may be upset about something in their life. I also have to reflect and realize that I had done the same thing years ago before I knew better. Sometimes we must be careful to get all the information and what is really happening in other’s lives. Perhaps we can then find our way to be part of the solution rather than part of the problem! In the Bible, in Jonah 4:9 says, “But God said to Jonah, “Do you have a right to be angry?” Jonah was upset that things were not going his way and God pointed out that Jonah had his focus in the wrong place. Jonah had to learn that it is not what happens to us that matters (tailgaters and cagers pulling too close to the bike), it’s also what happens in us that matters. What happens to us that’s beyond our control is not as important as how we respond to those events. How do we overcome our anger or our tempers? We must learn to be more like Jesus and be more intentionally focused to show His love through our actions. It is then that we can learn to live and enjoy life more and keep our emotions under control. Follow Him and He will bless you!
