EXCLUSIVE KIT
Hello!
Editor’s favourite sets over the years...
S
o we’ve made it, 200 issues of Papercraft Essentials – WOW! And this edition is a celebration like no other, with more chances for you to win, save money and become more inspired than ever before. A milestone event in life is nothing without looking back at how far you’ve come, and this issue is no different. We take a look back at some of the key moments and people, past and present, who have shaped Papercraft Essentials to become Britain’s best-selling papercraft magazine, as well as helping it become internationally known in over 20 countries, as without these individuals, this title wouldn’t be where it is today! For this issue’s kit, we wanted to bring you something super special, so we’ve added a trio of shaker domes, so you can create your own celebration projects inspired by the legendary makes in our Using Your Kit section, a must if you’re looking for landmark cards, wanting to learn how master tunnel cards and 3D celebration gift boxes with a difference. We also caught up with the queen of sparkle Chloe Endean (pages 80-82) about her brand history and what she’s been up to during lockdown to keep you crafters sane; she’s also given all of you a 15% site-wide discount. Lisa Horton has given us a triple access-all-areas pass to her brand, as we go behind the scenes at her HQ, find out about her typical day, as well as getting to know her on a more personal level (pages 59-61). Talking personally, Papercraft Essentials has been in my life for just over four years now, since I began sourcing all the competitions and giveaways and writing some of the pages as the Editorial Assistant for the papercraft titles. Now, I’m here as the Editor bringing you the 200th birthday issue, it’s a complete honour to have compiled this edition, and I hope you have as much fun reading and crafting alongside it as much as the team and I have had organising it, as well as creating the projects. So whether this is your first ever issue, your regular monthly purchase/subscription, or you’ve been with us since day one, we thank you for your support; this is for you!

New skills Issue 198 certainly threw down the gauntlet with the Fairy Wishes collection, providing an array of rich coloured papers, toppers and fairy silhouettes; not the first thing that comes to mind when thinking all things fairy. So, I would like to thank you for getting my grey cells working and giving me the confidence to work with dark papers and silhouettes without the end product looking dull or morbid. I have had such fun making 10 cards thus far and have hardly made a dent on the foiled collection. I even felt inspired to try Sam Butler’s circular card make, something I had never tried before and was very pleased with the results. I have really enjoyed working with the fairy papers/toppers and being pushed out of my comfort zone; we are never too old to learn new things. Keep up the good work, and thanks to you all for providing such a good read, ideas and inspiration. Gill Hopkins, Hampshire
Fabulous makes
I am 13 years old and have loved cardmaking since my grandma and sister introduced it to me around three years ago. I have been subscribed to Papercraft Essentials for nearly two years and have loved receiving them. These magazines have inspired me to try new things, and I have recently made the drawer gift box from issue 195; this was the first box I have made without using a shop-bought die. I have really enjoyed receiving these magazines and definitely want to continue with the subscription for years to come. I am always excited when the new magazine arrives and immediately open and read it! Lily S, via email Mike says: Hi Lily, I’m immensely impressed with your fab creations, and the gift box from issue 195 looks awesome – well done, the whole Papercraft Essentials team loves it! I hope the voucher helps you stock up on more stash. Please send me pics of your makes; I love seeing them! Happy crafting!

Inspiring work colleagues I have been creating cards for a long time. I had decided to randomly show my work colleagues the types of cards I had been making to help me through lockdown. They were so impressed that my manager asked me to create some to be used within our mental wellbeing team. With Mental Health Week fast approaching, I created the theme of nature. This was the first time I had been approached by a company. If it was not for your magazine and die-cuts used, I don’t think I would have had that chance to share my greeting cards so widely. Thank you, Papercraft Essentials. Marina Darby, via email

Q&A with Debbie.... How long have you been working with Papercraft Essentials? Do you remember your first projects/issue you were featured in? I have been working with Papercraft Essentials for six years now. The first projects I had featured were a commission for The Hobby House. What do craft magazines mean to you, and why are they so important to crafters? I love inspiring people and sharing any crafty hints and tips along the way. I think craft magazines are important to crafters to help kick-start their mojos or just boost their confidence with easy-tofollow projects in a variety of styles to suit any level. What are your top five crafting products you can’t live without? Hmm, that’s tough one! Well, I think it would be Finishing Touches, pearls, flowers, ribbons, etc. I love my Copic Sketch Markers for colouring. My die-cutting machine and dies, sticky picky-up tool, a really good pair of scissors just for cutting ribbon and my hot-glue gun for fast strong adhesion. I guess I had better stop there!

Cardmaker of the Year We’re super excited to bring you our fab four new designers that have won our cardmaking competition!
Ashley’s winning entries Ashley Thompson How long have you been papercrafting? About 23 years – I started making cards because I wanted something quick to make. I did loads of crossstitch cards, but they were time-consuming, so I got into stamping. I then became a mum of three, and whilst the children were young, I concentrated on other crafts. I got back into papercrafting by selling at local craft fairs, but I really found papercrafting beneficial last year when I was undergoing treatment for cancer. I discovered the YouTube papercrafting community and started to enter lots of challenges, which took me out of my comfort zone of cardmaking. What are your favourite papercraft techniques? I’d say stamping is at the core of everything I do, but I am building my confidence when using mixed-media techniques. I’ve recently discovered Frantage, a powder you don’t need to use with sticky ink. I have dabbled with digital papercrafting, and this is something I’d like to explore more. We loved that so much time, effort and detail went into your trio of projects – what inspired your entries? For cards, I love everything Lavinia, and the beautiful eye stamp is a bit different
from her whimsical fairies and creatures. Blue is one of my favourite colours, and I really enjoy using Brushos. I decided to make a ‘wiper’ card, as I really like the element of surprise. For my second card, I used elements from issue 3 of the IndigoBlu Premium Magazine and stuck to my ‘signature style’. I enjoyed using the fairly intricate dies, which is not something I usually do. Again, I made an interactive card, as I like the fun aspect of the secret window. The floral stamps were a joy to use, and I’m often inspired by nature. I made a mini album for my papercrafting project, as I love all things mini – 3”-square cards are my favourite size! It had to be sea-themed, as I feel so calm when I’m by it. I also had the fantastic Ocean Blue 8x8” Graphic 45 paper pad. I made a load of my backgrounds using Brushos and Cosmic Shimmer Pixie Powders and just had fun assembling the cascade mini album using stamps and papers from my stash.
and dies. I’m really into vintage dictionary definitions, so stamps/stickers with keywords would be useful. I love using remnant rubs, so to have these in my collection would be fabulous. It would be brilliant to have inks in colours that co-ordinated with the papers too. I would love to name these after food items as I’m a real foodie! I like the soft, muted colours of Venetian marble, as well as strong blues and greens. These are photos I have taken over the years of things that interested me because of their colour, pattern, texture or shape.
One of the winners will work with the Practical Publishing team to create a CraftStash Capsule Collection. What would your ideal kit look like? I would like something sea or natural history-themed. I’m also inspired by architectural patterns. I’m not really a ‘cutesy’ character kind of person, although I have a soft spot for bears, cats, rabbits We love Ashley’s and cows. stylish stamping, attention to I would love stamps with detail and fab co-ordinating papers, stencils interactivity!
2021 – the winners! my passion for crafting, would grow and grow! I have been known to spend hours making one card!
Amy Wilks How long have you been papercrafting? I started papercrafting about 13 years ago, shortly after my oldest daughter was born. Whilst on maternity leave, I visited a local stationery shop and noticed that it sold cardmaking supplies. I bought a few products and was totally hooked! Little did I know then that my small box of cardmaking supplies, along with
What are your favourite papercraft techniques? I enjoy all papercraft techniques, but my favourites are die-cutting and stamping. I love the endless creative possibilities and trying to think outside of the box on how I can use them in as many different ways as possible. Stamping also provides you with opportunities for colouring, paper-piecing and fussy-cutting, all techniques I enjoy using on my cards and projects. We loved the variety of styles showcased in your projects – what inspired your entries? I thought about my projects for many weeks before I started making them, and I only posted them off two days before the deadline! I really wanted to showcase various papercraft techniques and use different card shapes and colour palettes in my work. I chose babies and birthdays as occasions for my cards as these are two fantastic reasons to celebrate and send cards. I also combined some
older products with some more recently released products to showcase how they can be used together. For my calendar, I enjoyed thinking of the different occasions that can be celebrated each month and incorporating these into each page.
One of the four winners will go on to work with the Practical Publishing teams to create a Capsule Collection for CraftStash. What would your ideal kit look like? My kit would be ‘Delicate Dreams’, which promotes empowerment and positivity. The collection could be used for cardmaking, scrapbooking and home décor. The collection would include a paper pad, stamps and dies, with a pastel colour palette of pinks, yellows, greens, blues and
Amy’s winning entries
purples. It would also contain metallic rose gold or silver. The paper pad would have various background papers with tie-die, watercolour and ombré effect, with metallic foiling to some of the papers. The stamps would be short, inspirational and empowering quotes and everyday sentiment stamps such as ‘Celebrate’ and ‘Happy Birthday’ for further versatility. The set would include rainbows as these continue to be a symbol of happiness, hope and togetherness. Each rainbow layer would be an individual stamp so that it could be stamped in different colours. For the die set, the theme would be a dreamcatcher with one main circle outer die and three different patterned interchangeable inner dies to create three different dreamcatchers. To accompany this, there would be two/ three different feather and bead-shaped dies to adorn it and create many different variations. I would also like the collection to contain small flower and butterfly dies for accessorising or to use individually. I really like the effect of tags used as a focal point on cards, and I think a tag die would perfectly accompany the rainbow stamps, quotes and small flower and butterfly dies.
Amy’s wonderful project variety instantly caught our eye!
Cardmaker of the Year Jessica’s winning entries Jessica Jenkins How long have you been papercrafting? I have always been quite creative; I remember making cards in secondary school, but they weren’t very good! It was about seven years ago; my nan (a big cardmaker herself) gave me my first die-cutting machine to make some wedding invitations for a friend and then it just went on from there! I started my first scrapbook when I met my fiancé nearly six years ago and just naturally got into cardmaking. I became more serious about cardmaking as a hobby two years ago and then took the plunge to start my own YouTube channel in March 2020 to try and turn my hobby into a full-time job. What are your crafting aspirations, on our Design Team and beyond? My biggest aspiration is to have a job I am passionate and enthusiastic about. I want to turn my hobby into a career. I would love to start my own range of stamps, dies, papers and everything in between. And being in with a chance to make this a reality is simply amazing. I also love being part of a design team, getting to play with new products and finding different ways to inspire other crafters. How does it feel to be a Cardmaker of the Year 2021 winner? I’m not sure it has really sunk in yet! I was speechless, which is so unlike me! This
is such a huge opportunity, which I am very grateful for; I hope this is another step closer to achieving my goals. I never thought that I would be a winner; there are so many talented crafters out there, I wasn’t sure that I had a chance! But you must be in it to win it, as my dad says! We loved the variety of stamping and colouring on your three projects – what inspired your entries? I wanted to create something cohesive, so my main inspiration came from the colour scheme I picked, blues and browns. I thought this would work well with springtime flowers and the farm scene. I love colouring with alcohol markers, and big florals are perfect for adding depth and detail. I like to create scenes, as well as with lots of smaller
images. The colouring doesn’t need to be so detailed, but when it all comes together, it just works! One of the four winners will go on to work with the Practical Publishing team to create a CraftStash Capsule Collection. What would your ideal kit look like? The theme derives from a cactus and succulents but with a modern twist. The cactus has a couple of outfits that can be used to dress it up, and I have tried to pair it with some modernthemed sentiments. For the embossing folder and background stamp, I have gone for more basic designs. I envision monochrome with the colourful cactus. I also hope, by making them a little more basic, they will be more versatile. There are two separate
Jessica’s clean and concise colouring took her projects to the next level! stencils, but one is just making use of the first’s wastage; this will create a stencil for blending the sky and blending the rocky background. I have also added two extra stencils onto the other ends to make use of the space and help build an entire scene.
2021 – the winners! Sharon-Elaine Jones How long have you been papercrafting? Since I was about 13 years old, I took part in a summer holiday craft club and made a 3D découpage card. It was a

hand-cut Sad Sam dog design layered with foam sticky pads, and my mum still has it in her scrapbook. At secondary school, I discovered quilling and made a quilled dragon for my art exam. Since school, I’ve tried origami, paper flower making, book folding, die-cutting, stamping and recently, digital papercrafting. How does it feel to be a Cardmaker of the Year 2021 winner? Absolutely amazing. I still can’t quite believe it. I genuinely didn’t expect to be a winner! I entered because I wanted to challenge myself to produce something unique to show you, even if I didn’t win. I remember packing my entries and hugging the box before taking it to the Post Office, never expecting to see the items again, so it’s really exciting to see them in the magazine! We loved the intricate die-cutting on your projects – what inspired your entries? Thank you! The colours inspired
me for two of the projects, I really like working with shades of colour, and I’m totally obsessed with all things floral, so it had to be flowers. The layered flowers just worked so well in shades of coral, but I didn’t want to arrange whole flowers in the centre of the card, so I went for the opposite and arranged them around the edge. The shadow box wasn’t going to be a tunnel effect, but I had a lightbulb moment when choosing the pink cardstock, and it just evolved! The spinning shaker card design came about last year when I wanted to make a spinner card and shaker card and wondered if I could combine the two. I gave it a go, and it worked! Do you listen to anything whilst crafting? If so what was the last thing you listened to? I usually have a CD playing whilst crafting, and the last one I listened to was Pop Art – The Hits by Pet Shop Boys.
Sharon-Elaine’s winning entries
One of the four winners will go on to work with the Practical Publishing team to create a Capsule Collection for CraftStash. What would your ideal kit look like? I’m fascinated by debossing dies to add texture such as delicate swirls, flowers and geometric designs that make tiny pinpoint dents or stitches to single layer cards. I’d like layered panel dies, with two or three layers in each set, large enough for a card front, and big background stamps, with swirls, flowers, geometric designs, hearts, stars and leaves. I’d include a die set creating 3D clematis flowers – there are many varieties/ colours, but I’ve not yet found a set to make them in paper. I can imagine five and six petal flowers, with straight and frilly edged petals, plus dies for fluffy centres for double flowers and different stamen. There’d be a mix-and-match layered clematis stamp set for different varieties, and inkpad sets in shades of pinks, lilacs, purples and greens. Finally, I’d have solidcore smooth cardstock in shades of a colour for flowers, 180gsm-210gsm, for shaping, and no white core showing.

MAKING memories
Packed with step-by-step guides, let Helen show you how to create unique mini albums for yourself and loved ones

ini albums are so much fun to make, it’s no surprise they have become my favourite craft. Each page/insert is a mini scrapbook layout and these small albums are perfect for recording special events and holidays. You can make them as interactive as you like and everyone loves having a

browse through them. They are perfect for the coffee table and just the right size for children to hold. My children love our mini albums and spend many happy hours sharing memories. These little books also make great gifts for loved ones. They are perfect as wedding or new babies gifts. Give them complete with
photographs or decorated and ready for the recipient to add their own. Once you know the basics, the sky is the limit! There are many techniques that can be used when making albums and you can find hundreds of tutorials on YouTube. You will need a few basic tools to get you started,
some of which you may already have in your craft stash. The larger tools include a scoreboard and paper trimmer. Some paper trimmers have a scoring function and these are ideal if you’re on a budget or short of space. You will also need a bone folder, doublesided tape, fast-drying glue and chipboard/cardboard (cereal
SKILL-BUILDING ESSENTIALS
Exclusive reader discount packaging will do, too). The bone folder is often overlooked but is a very important tool – folding your score lines properly will make all the difference to your finished album and it also comes in handy in other stages of the album creation. As a final note, mistakes can and will happen during an
album assembly! It’s important to remember that it happens to all of us (even the pros). You can pretend it never happened, fix it, cover it up or start again. Mini album-making is a fun and rewarding hobby and it’s lovely to contain happy memories in a neat little bundle.
We’ve teamed up with CraftStash to bring you 10% off Hunkydory The Adorable Scoreboard Mini. To claim your discount, go to www.craftstash.co.uk, add your items to your basket and enter PE20010 at the checkout! *Offer ends 22nd July 2021. For full terms & conditions see www.craftstash.co.uk

How to... create a simple envelope mini book
1 Start by gluing pairs of envelopes together by the flaps.
2 Affix a card from the pack onto the glued-together flaps.
Co-ordinating panels of paper will add to the luxurious finish
3 Make four hinges by cutting 41⁄4x2” strips of kraft cardstock and scoring at 1”. Fold in half and add double-sided tape to one side of the strips. Taper the ends.
4 Adhere the pairs of envelopes together using the hinges. You will have spare ones on the end pages.
32
5 Trim two 45⁄8x41⁄2” pieces of yellow cardstock and adhere them to the end pages.
6 To create the spine, trim patterned paper to 45⁄8x21⁄2”. Score at 1”, 11⁄8”, 11⁄4”, 13⁄8”, 11⁄2”. Fold on the outer score lines and curve the middle section around a pen.
Leave the spine to dry completely before trying to open the book
Top Tip
7 Glue the flat areas of the spine to the front and back cover. Add photos, handwritten sentiments and more to the inside of the pages to personalise.

Glue panels onto both sides of the pages. 3 Trim a 6¼x7¾” piece of yellow cardstock for the cover. Score the long side across the top at 3¾” and 4”. Fold and press with the bone folder. Glue the back page of the section from Step 1 to the back inside cover. 4 Cut three 6x3½” panels of paper and layer onto the cover.

CASCADE POCKETS
Us cascade album
Step by step 1 Seal all six envelopes and trim a very narrow strip from the top of each to make them into top-loading pockets. Cut the card blanks in half and round the corners with a punch. Matt each side of the envelope with a 5” square. 2 To make the binding, trim kraft cardstock to 5x113⁄4” and score across at 1” intervals. Accordionfold alternate ways. Starting from the right, glue each envelope along the accordion, missing a section between each one. 3 To make the box base, trim cardstock to measure 73⁄4x7¼” and score at 1” on all four sides. Cut off two of the corner squares and assemble the box with the remaining side. For the lid, trim
card to 7⅝x7⅛”, score at 1” on all sides and assemble. 4 Glue the last page of the album to the base of the box – position so the flap is on the left and allows the pages to flow out. 5 Matt and layer panels of co-ordinating cardstock and
patterned paper onto the box, leaving narrow borders, and decorate with a burlap ribbon as a bellyband. Die-cut flowers, leaves and a title. Add photos, handwritten sentiments and more to the inside of the pages to personalise. 33

Step by step 1 Using black ink, stamp the wine glass, and use grey ink, plus different generations of grey, for the rest of the elements. Mask off the top of the glass, and offset the straw as it goes into it, giving light impressions for the ice cubes. 2 Work with a few layers for this make, allowing them to dry inbetween. Start by blocking colours and adding some watery colour, flowing diagonally from the main wine glass. 3 Intensify colours with more pigment as you add more layers, building detail, adding shading, sticking to just wet-on-dry, or a little wet-on-wet to get some lovely colour blends. 4 Once happy with the built-up layers, add optional splatter in both flat and metallic watercolour and some extra metallic fine details to enhance the zest curls, straw and umbrella. 5 To finish, add a sentiment to the card blank as shown. Have a dry run with the arrangement on scrap cardstock before starting so you know if you want to do any masking and what colour/ generation of ink to use for different elements

Scoring a double-width piece, then cutting it in two, is a lot quicker and easier than scoring two narrow pieces!
1 Assemble box and trim A4 blue patterned paper to make a 6cmwide slide-off wrap. 2 Trim an 8cm strip from one of the origami papers, score down at every 0.5cm all the way across. Before concertina folding like a fan, split strip into two 4cm pieces. Fold each, snip all folded pieces at one edge to a point. Join the ends together to make a circle and adhere together in the centre, holding it tight while it dries.
3 Wipe the pointed edges of the flower with the embossing pad, add gold embossing powder and heat to set. 4 Add two pinched and layered circles, and a large heart sticker completing the flower. 5 Repeat using a 6cm origami paper strip for the smaller flower, splitting in two once scored, to make the smaller design. 6 Affix to the wrap on the gift box, tucking in a tag. Add small gold stars to finish.

Work around each one, layering one sticker over the last. Alternate foliage with flowers for a mixture of subtle and bright colours. 5 Affix the panels to the card fronts using 3D foam pads and add a die-cut sentiment for each.

ONE KIT MAKES
Q&A with Nicky... How long have you been working with Papercraft Essentials? Do you remember your first project/issue? I have been designing for this magazine for about four years now. Papercraft Essentials 147 was my first issue, when I showcased a Craftwork Cards collection, and I am very lucky to have contributed to over 40 issues since then, showcasing collections from companies or creating inspiration for the goodies that come with the magazine. What do you love about Papercraft Essentials? I love how accessible the projects are, using the magazine kits. It’s really important for new or inexperienced crafters to be able to use the kits without much extra equipment, or adapt what they have to make cards of their own. I’m always inspired by layouts or imaginative ideas from my fellow Design Team members, even when I have made projects myself! What do craft magazines mean to you and why are they so important to crafters? I remember how excited I was when I first started cardmaking and discovered magazines, full of new products and ideas. I must have copies of Papercraft Essentials going back years! Inspiration is key, and I took so much from the features in the magazines, even cutting out pages or card layouts that inspired me. I have a scrapbook full of these pages and pictures, and I still love looking at it. Magazines are a great source of information about new products too, and I have spent more money than I dare admit to over the years, seeking out must-have new products that I have seen on the pages of Papercraft Essentials. 40

Add a matching ribbon through the holes, glue inside the lid, creating a handle. 5 Add the second lid on top of the base, using as a guide for adding another larger band of gold around the base under the lid. Glue a gem hiding any joins. 6 Adhere the lid with the ribbon to the bottom of the base. 7 Die-cut lots of flowers in a few sizes, ink and add sequin centres. 8 Cut a fringe ‘grass’ along the edge of the second lid, and affix 52

1 Using the template, cut out the box from white cardstock and fold score lines. Glue inner tabs that match the side without the tab and glue inside.
2 Use the desk to help stick the two tabs in place to form the box. Repeat to make six boxes in total.
3 Cover the sides with patterned paper, using the template, create the layers. Cover all six and set aside.
4 Cut out the wrap three times and fold score lines. With more of the patterned paper, cover seven sections on it – three on one and two on the others.
5 Take the two wrap pieces and glue one on top of the blank side. Use the last wrap section to adhere last blank section, lining up the score lines.
6 Flip the wrap over and glue boxes in sections between score lines. Add boxes, making sure all open in the same direction.
7 Roll up boxes to go over the top to close. Take ribbon and adhere around outside on five sides with enough left to tie closed.

Behind the scenes
LISA HORTON Go behind the curtain with us at Lisa Horton Crafts HQ, as we get to know her, her brand history and on a more personal level
Lisa Horton Lisa Horton Crafts has been going for just over 16 months since Lisa decided to take the plunged to become an independent brand in 2020; since then, her crafting trajectory has sky-rocketed with her brand and products going to an international audience. Based on “the sunshine coast” of Eastbourne, East Sussex, Lisa lives above her shop with her husband, Danny, teenage daughter, Lily, and “very naughty, chubby, Lilac British Shorthair” cat, Prudence. We sat down with selfconfessed “tidy crafter” to find out more about her, what her day is like running one of the hottest brands on the crafting block, her proudest brand achievements, what her guilty pleasure is, and so much more!
Hi Lisa, how did the internationally known Lisa Horton Crafts begin? It all started while I was working in a large shop with a small craft department. I had so many customers asking for things that weren’t in stock; I wrote a list, rented a tiny shop and opened with all the things customers could not get in the big store. After a few years, I invested in a laser cutter; we branched into MDF/greyboard and stencils in a big way. This was going really well and, one day, a rep came in to see me and saw what I was doing. They
took some of the products back to their HQ, who loved it, and asked us to work with them cutting their MDF/stencils. At that time, they had no idea I was also a papercrafter and, when they saw my designs and cards, encouraged me to join their Design Team and eventually appear on TV. I was then given the amazing opportunity to create my own ranges, which catapulted my career. I stayed with them for over four years, and then, in January 2020, I decided to branch out on my own (with Danny, of course). It was incredibly risky and scary, but I am so glad I took the leap. Danny is now chief laser cutter, MDF and stencil designer, and I design the dies, stamps, papers and embossing folders. Create & Craft has been amazing and supported and helped me every step of the way.
Have you always been in crafting? What did you do before setting up your brand? I have always loved colouring
and drawing. Every Christmas I used to ask for pens and pencils; not a lot has changed! Before setting up my brand (many moons ago), I was a PA. I left school with great secretarial skills, and it bode
Quick-fire questions: Favourite music/artist to listen to whilst crafting? Probably Imagine Dragons, but quite often I love a good audiobook. Favourite book and why? I have two. First is The Girl With All The Gifts, bizarrely a zombie novel, but SO much more than that. In contrast, Wool, a dystopian trilogy, which is utterly amazing. Having said all that, most of my audiobooks are crime novels.
What three crafting items could you not live without? My Messy Mat, Wonder Brushes and Distress Oxide Inks. Guilty pleasure? Shhhh… Catchphrase on a Saturday night! Where is your happy place?
Home… always home.
59
me well, although I was very bored. I eventually got a job in a large shop with a small craft department and worked there whilst Lily was small.
What were the first products created for LHC? Are they available to purchase now? My first launch was the EDGEcutz dies and stamps In the Loop, Daisy Burst and Butterfly Flourish. I keep trying to retire them as my packaging has now changed, but people still love them, so they are still available to buy.
What’s your proudest achievement with your brand? Well, I have two, actually! One has to be the change in the last 16 months. I used to have two hours on TV and be happy with that. Now I have Pick of the Day, Blockbuster and Pick of the Week shows. This is just an incredible journey, and my customers are just the most amazing people. My other has to be the launch of my very first Premium Box Kit with Practical Publishing. I loved it, my customers loved it, and it was so funny to be in Tesco, and Lily says, “Hey, Mum, your magazine is here”. It was very surreal.
“I have been crafting since I could walk” How do you organise your crafting space? Do you have any advice for Papercraft Essentials readers on how to do this? This is a bit of a “Do as I say, not as I do” answer… It sounds strange, but I like to keep as much on display as I can, on shelves and in storage cubes from that famous Swedish company. I find that if I can’t see it, I don’t use it. 60
I normally grab what is around me, rather than rummaging for things, unless I am doing something really specific. My attention span is not good, so when the rummaging starts, I find all sorts of goodies I forgot about, and then the day is gone, and I have done nothing!
In your downtime away from work, what do you enjoy doing? Depending on the season, I like to do different things. Summer is hopping in the car for five minutes, down the road to the seafront, and walking along the pier, with fish and chips with Lily and Danny. In the winter, I love to bake and sew. Although nowadays, there is rarely any downtime, if I am honest.
Do you come from a creative family background? Creative in different ways. My mum is an AMAZING knitter. She can watch TV and knit at the same time! And she is the best cook I know. My dad is like me, incredibly organised and tidy. He was a proofer in the printing industry, so my love of paper started there, and I have been crafting since I could walk.
Do you have a favourite part of your job? Making samples definitely, although I don’t get to do this as often as I used to. I think the reason is that I have had the idea in my head, drawn the artwork, had my idea converted into a die/stamp, and
then, finally, get to hold that product in my hand. And to create a card from something in my head a few months prior is just an incredible feeling.
How many products are now in your collection? Now, this shocked me when I answered this question. I put codes on the back of my stamps and dies etc… So, are you ready? In 16 months, we have: • 100 dies • Over 50 stamps • 32 3D embossing folders • 56 stamps AND a TON of stencils
LISA HORTON BEHIND THE SCENES
Lisa's classic day at HQ 6-7am: Oh goodness, I am NOT a morning person. Although Prudence [the cat] thinks it’s the best time to dive under the duvet or chase her favourite bauble around the house. So I may not be up, but I am definitely awake! 7-9am: The first stop is tea. Danny’s always awake early, opens the shop and takes Lily to school. This is my time, so I feed Pru (as she has normally brought me half a worm, a dead fly or something) and clean. Then more tea, and head into the shop, swiftly followed by Pru. 9-11am: Normally assisted by Prudence, I open post, answer emails, and make a list of what I need to do. Then I start on website orders. The website is very busy, so depending on whether I have been on TV the day before, this can take an hour or more! We also sell to other shops, so we have lots to pack. 11-1pm: This is when I normally start looking at what is coming up for TV. The day gets very busy from here – counting stock, deciding what will be on TV over the next 4-6 weeks and starting to create TV show proposals. Midday, I make us both food, and Danny and I catch up on what needs doing. ie I tell him I need 1,000 stencils cut over the next 10 days, or has he answered ‘Mrs Smith’ yet about her order. 1-2pm: Now, if we’ve had a show, this is the busiest hour of the day. We have huge mail sacks full of orders, and we have to take them out to the courier's van and load them into crates to take away. We send literally thousands and thousands of parcels out over the course of a month.
What would you consider your brand’s unique qualities? This is an easy question to answer, and I think my customers would agree. You can pretty much pick up something in your stash you have purchased from me and use it with an older or newer product I have brought to market. Everything, in some way or other, will work together. My aim has always been to give your products longevity, and I want you to choose my stamps and dies as your 'go-to' products. That is a huge compliment to me.
What can we expect from the brand over the next year? Ooooh, I can’t tell you too much, but we are expanding the product range for sure. I
2-3pm: Danny leaves to post all the website orders and to pick Lily up from school. I love him doing the school runs, as it gets him away from the shop, and he has at least a little quality time on his own with Lily. This is the time I tidy the shop a bit, start looking at artwork that needs approving and working out prices for products.
want you to be able to come to me for everything you need to create stunning projects. I am massively fussy with what I like and the quality, so it is an ongoing process. However, there are a few exciting things 'on the water' that I am so excited about. But you will have to wait for these!

3-4pm: This is a bit of a slack hour. Lily comes home, Prudence naps in a box and Danny is in the garage cutting stencils/MDF/ acrylic. We cut for other companies too, so the shop and machines are always busy. Lily and I always have a catch-up, chat about her day, and decide on dinner plans. Although if it is Friday, it is normally fish and chips or a cheeky KFC. 4-6pm: I tend to go into the house and fire up my laptop. I work better late in the day, so I get ready to start the artwork for product packaging and anything else I am working on. Then it’s dinner and clean time. 6-10pm: This is my most productive time. Lily is playing on her computer. Danny and I try and go for a walk around the block, or Danny heads back to the garage, as we don’t have time to stop at 6pm. I run the bath by 8pm, make sure Danny is indoors, Lily is clean (as clean as a teenager gets!), and I am in my PJs. As we spend all day together, Danny quite often heads off to the bedroom and watches sport or listens to an audiobook (and I hear him snoring by 9.30). I catch up on work on the computer and have a natter with my friends on Facebook. Lily tends to come in for an hour, and we have a girly chat and watch a little Friday Night Dinner, which is her favourite TV programme. It’s good to hear her chuckling.

and I feel it is time that it hit the spotlight so that you can all try it out. I’ve been exploring layered heat-embossing and want to share my creative journey and the results. It might seem complicated at first, but
it’s easily done with the right tools and a few easy steps. All you need is an embossing ink, an embossing/anti-static powder tool, embossing powder in different colours, a heat tool and layering stamps.
So, nothing new. I would recommend using a stamping tool, if you have one, but it is not essential for this technique. Embossing powder is in fact finely ground plastic that melts and fuses when heat is applied.
BEGINNER'S GUIDE
You need to use a sticky embossing ink or a similar ink that remains wet for a while (eg pigment ink) for the powders to adhere to your card – these are the basics of heat-embossing. Layered heat-embossing can
be done in a few ways and I demonstrate this within the feature to help get you started. Layering stamps are perfect for this technique; stencils can be used in a similar way and you can also combine the two.
You could try using simple symmetrical clear stamps, in which case you stamp with the flat back of the stamp, heatemboss, then turn and stamp over the top with the stamp front, as you would normally,
then heat-emboss. The biggest tip is to use an embossing tool in between layers. Following these simple steps and thinking outside the box will lead to wonderful embossed designs. Have fun! 63

Catch up with CHLOE We talk to papercraft’s Queen of Sparkle, Chloe Endean, about what she’s been up to during lockdown and all things Chloe’s Creative Cards
Chloe Endean Chloe Endean has been a mainstay in Papercraft Essentials since the early days, bringing you the latest from her fab floral product ranges and how to get the best from them. She also became our Problem Solved guru in issue 181, so we thought we’d catch up with papercraft’s go-to for all things twinkly, glitter-filled and super floral and see what she’s been up to during lockdown to inspire crafters, as well as go behind the scenes at one of the crafting world’s leading brands. Based in Durham in the North East of England, Chloe’s business, Chloe’s Creative Cards, is based around a 10-minute drive from the city centre. The decade-old company is now essential for all crafters, with all of us having some Chloe products in our collection, but like all great businesses, it began from a cottage industry with a small stamp set at a craft fair that became an instant sell-out! Chloe on her famous Stamp-a-Longs on Facebook!
How did the business start and why? It began back in 2011, as I’ve always had an interest in crafting and crafted with my grandma when I was younger. I also used to make and sell cards at craft fairs and local shows; I knew I wanted to be in the craft industry somehow. I left college at 18 and didn’t want to go to university, so I started drawing a few designs for items that I wanted and things that I wanted to make cards. We had a small number of stamps made, and we sold 80
them all; this then led to a re-order, which also sold out. I had a small stand at a local papercraft show. We took all of the stamps we had along with some embellishments, and by the end of the day, we had nothing left! It was at this show I met Barbara, who lives around the corner from me. She encouraged me to start running cardmaking classes. I started in the local community centre. This soon led to two sessions a
week, and then we eventually moved into a unit on the local industrial estate.
What’s a typical day like Chloe HQ? Every day is different at Chloe’s Creative Cards HQ, and that’s why I love my job so much! All days start bright and early, and I’m usually between the office and home. I like to do most of my designing when I’m at home, so I have my
craft room on-hand to try out new ideas. If I’m prepping for TV, my craft room is pretty messy, but I prefer to call it organised chaos as I know where everything is – I surely can’t be the only messy crafter? I absolutely love it when new product samples come through, and I get to play – I still, all these years down the line, cannot believe it when I see my
CHLOE OE INTERVIEW INTERVIEW
designs turned into stamps and dies. It really is so exciting!
Who’s involved in Chloe’s Creative Cards? We’re a family run business, run by mum, dad and myself. We also have my auntie Susanne and cousin Anna working with us. I mainly work on product design and development, and of course playing... I mean working, with all of the new goodies when they arrive. Mum, dad, Susanne and Anna all work on packing and order processing of the online orders. We also have a fabulous design team made up of Barbara, Becca, Glynis and Ruth, who create lots of gorgeous projects using all the new products!
“I knew I wanted to be in the craft industry in some way” What’s it like going on TV showcasing your fab products? I love being able to showcase our products as it allows me to show you exactly how to use all of the products and talk through my thought process from when I was designing them. Then being able to craft with everything is just the best bit!
What have you been up to during lockdown to keep inspiring crafters? I’ve been hosting a weekly Facebook Stamp-a-Long Live on the Chloe’s Creative Cards page, which has been amazing, and so much fun! Every Wednesday at 2pm, we all join together and create a project!
I put the materials list and a free PDF instruction sheet to download so you know exactly what you need, and you can craft along with me at home; it’s literally like being in a cardmaking class with me.
What’s your favourite product you’ve created? It’s so hard to choose as it changes all the time! I think I’d have to say our stamps – I love how you can take blank paper and transform it into something amazing, be it a stunning background or a 3D flower using a flower stamp.
What can we expect from you over the next few months? We’ve been working on so many awesome new products during lockdown, which started with our fabulous new dies!
Exclusive reader discount Head to page 22-25 now to claim your EXCLUSIVE discount
These are something that I’ve wanted for so long, but we wanted to get them right. I don’t know about you, but sometimes I struggle with getting my matts and layers straight; these dies make matt and layering a breeze.
Your Premium Magazine is flying off the shelves and CraftStash when it's out – what’s it like working with the Practical Publishing team? When Chris Cooke, the Group Business Development
Manager, contacted me, I felt so honoured; it was an incredible opportunity, one that I would never have dreamt would happen. I absolutely love designing the box kits – it’s always so much fun! Designing all of the exclusive elements and being able to offer so much value in one kit is amazing, and having a magazine packed with inspiration is fabulous. The team at Practical Publishing is brilliant to work with too.
Chloe’s next premium magazine is on sale 17th June 2021

CHLOE INTERVIEW
What is your favourite-ever project that you’ve made? My favourite project I’ve ever made would have to be this blue sparkly card using our Ice Skate stamp from a few Christmases ago. I love how all of the colours and sparkle go so well together. I adore this stamp as it brings back so many memories of ice-skating with family over Christmas.
What’s your favourite thing about your job? My favourite thing has to be product design – I love it! It’s always so amazing when you’ve worked on a product for months, and the samples finally land in the office. I always want to craft straight away with them. I always have so many ideas for projects that I want to work on right away.
What advice would you give to a crafter who wants to start a blog or YouTube channel, or selling their makes on Etsy or similar, who doesn’t quite have the confidence to do so? Just go for it; you’ve got nothing to lose! Definitely put 82
your projects out there. It’s always lovely as a product designer to be able to see what crafters at home are making with our products – it has to be one of the most rewarding parts of the job. Also, be sure to tag the company’s products you are using in your posts – you never know who might see them!
You’ve been part of the crafting world for so long, but if you hadn’t been, what do you think you could see yourself doing? I’ve never really had a proper job or CV, so I really don’t know. I think I probably would have gone into beauty and maybe been a nail technician, as that’s still a pretty creative job.
“I love how you can take blank paper and transform it into something amazing” Aside from crafting, do you have any other hobbies and interests? I love weightlifting, so I spend
most of my free time in the gym or doing something active. I’m terrible at cooking and baking, so you definitely wouldn’t be seeing me on The Great British Bake Off any time soon! I’d love to travel more too when time allows. I’d love to see more of America – I love it over there. I’d also like to see the Northern Lights as it looks so beautiful!
Where can the PE readers share their Chloe makes using products from the Premium Magazine and your website? We have a Chloe’s Creative Cards group on Facebook where everyone can post their makes, and it has been amazing to see all of the different cards and projects made using the kits and products from the website.
It’s fab to see what everyone can make with the same elements, and you get so many various products contained within the kits, meaning you can try different things.

fold left-hand side forward and right-hand side back, forming a concertina card blank. 2 Open out the right-hand side leaving the left-hand side folded. Put a cardstock under the fold so the die doesn’t cut through both sides. Add die one to side with one edge overlapping the fold, tape in place and die-cut, trim off the top on the fold line. 3 Repeat process on the other side, forming two arches, with a rectangle in the middle; trim
the top of the rectangle panel to about 15cm and round top corners. 4 Cut gold matts to fit each of the three panels, arches with die one, and paper matts slightly smaller, arches with die two. Adhere layers, making sure card will still fold. 5 For the central topper, use frame image from concept card, trim down frame and mount on gold Mirri. 6 Add a small piece of border and sentiments on 3D foam pads.

PE EDITORS PAST & PRESENT
Editors past & present We catch up with Editors past and present who have played a huge part in getting Papercraft Essentials to this milestone issue! Magazine creator and Editor You played a fundamental role in setting up Papercraft Essentials in the early days, what was that and the content like for the early Michelle Grant issues? The market at the time only had four or five craft magazines. Our titles at the time were The Scrapbook Magazine and Simply Cards & Papercraft; we took the stance that we wanted to make crafts easy and available to everyone. It was full of trips and tricks and how to use the actual products people aspired to use; you have to remember this was pre-YouTube, where tutorials are now just available at the click of a button!
Art Editor – Craft Essentials and PE 2005-2010 When did you work on Papercraft Essentials? Any favourite memories? Craig Chubb I was responsible for the design and layout of the very first issue of Papercraft Essentials, when it was called Craft Essentials, and looked very different to how it does today. We almost had to close [the title] around issue 10, as we wondered if there was a place for it in the market. So we completely altered the look and rebranded it as the PE we know and love today.
Editor – issues 68-121 (May 2011 – June 2015) Do you have a favourite memory and standout commission from your time Lee Campbell on PE? My favourite memory is probably issue 100 in October 2013. I believe it was the first time we’d given dies away – three simple nesting tags, and it was great fun looking back over the previous 99 issues! I did love all the cute commissions showcased on the covers during my time as Editor. Stamps from brands such as Lili of the Valley, Wild Rose Studio and Crafter’s Companion always featured heavily on my covers in those days.
Publisher – 2011-2020 Do you have a favourite memory from your time working on Gavin Burrell Papercraft Essentials? One of my favourite times of year was always when the Papercraft Designer of the Year competition entries came rolling in. You can always count on the Papercraft Essentials readers to produce some super creative off-the-page designs.
Editor – 2015-2017 What was your favourite set and feature during your time on PE and why? I’d have to say my all-time favourite covermount was on issue 137 – the s gin Becky Hig Winter Wonderland stamps and birch tree embossing folder combo proved hugely popular. What I loved about editing PE, and still enjoy seeing being included in the magazine each month, is the huge focus on money-saving ideas or stash-stretching inspiration to help crafters get more from the products they’ve bought in the past. PE really offers you the inspiration you need to look at your stash in a whole new light.
Art Editor – 2017–present What is your favourite kit and feature during your Andrew Baird time on PE and why? The Whale of a Time set from PE160. Anything nautical themed, and I’m sold! I’m most happy with the most recent design of the Using Your Kit section of the mag. I think it showcases the kits well and allows you, the reader, to think of ways to use the kit you may not have considered. 93
