Madama Butterfly Program | 2012

FROM THE GENERAL & ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Dear Friends, Welcome to the grand opening of our 2012/13 Season. We continue the tradition of presenting an artistically varied program with Puccini, Mozart and Wagner, and the U.S. premiere of our co-commissioned opera by James MacMillan, Clemency. We welcome back some old friends, singers, directors and designers to our stage and offer many exciting artistic debuts. BLO is one of the very few professional opera companies in the U.S. offering a season of entirely new productions, thanks to our extraordinary artistic team. By not importing shows, or renting sets and scenery from elsewhere, we offer countless additional employment opportunities in our community. We are proud to showcase many gifted BLO Emerging Artists again this season, as well as the enormously talented professional musicians and singers in our orchestra and chorus. Our dedicated team also includes the many professionals behind the stage and front of house. We enter the fall with one of Puccini’s greatest tragedies, Madama Butterfly. The fate of the young geisha girl never fails to move us to tears, no matter how often we have seen it, even for us producers who have worked with the opera more times then we can remember. Our stage director Lillian Groag, designer John Conklin, Music Director David Angus and the creative team have spent months dissecting the story and analyzing and framing the two colliding worlds and cultures. Our orchestra and chorus will be under the able baton of Maestro Andrew Bisantz. I look forward to hearing your feedback during the intermissions. BLO is your company! Some of you may know that your ticket covers a little less than a third of our annual budget and your support is crucial. BLO’s activities extend far beyond what you see on stage. In addition to our operas, we produce many community events such as our annual free outdoor summer concert with the Boston Landmarks Orchestra, lectures and events at the Boston Public Library, our Open House at the Shubert Theatre with competitions, other performances and events free to the public. We produce lectures and preview events at the MFA, and offer school and vacation programs, including several partnerships with Wheelock Family Theatre, and many other programs that benefit the community, colleges, families and patrons of all ages. The demand for opera is high and, with your continued help, we are pleased to be the foremost provider of opera in the Boston community. I hope that you find much to enjoy this season!

BOSTON LYRIC OPERA BOARD Welcome to Boston Lyric Opera’s 2012/2013 Season, opening with Madama Butterfly. We have an amazing season in store celebrating opera favorites and U.S. premieres, soaring voices and fresh, stimulating new productions. From this all-new Butterfly we move to a new production of Così Fan Tutte, directed by Sir Thomas Allen, who will also sing the role of Don Alfonso, and followed by the first Wagner staged by BLO in 20 years: The Flying Dutchman. I also extend an invitation to join us at Artists for Humanity in February for BLO’s Opera Annex: the American premiere of James MacMillan’s Clemency, a BLO co-commission with the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden; Scottish Opera and the Britten Sinfonia. Finally, please help me welcome the 2012/2013 Emerging Artists: baritone David McFerrin, mezzo soprano Nicole Rodin, tenor Alan Schneider, and soprano Michelle Trainor. Thank you for joining us today and for your support of BLO. Our audience truly does make opera happen. Steven P. Akin Chairman, Board of Directors CHAIR

PROGRAM NOTES NOTES FROM THE DIRECTOR by Lillian Groag

BUTTERFLY Tragedy ensues from character. Butterfly is an interesting girl. Daughter of a Samurai, she is brought up within the strictest of honor codes which produce non-negotiable requirements regarding what we now call “the quality of life.” All the more demanding in her case since she is female and her father committed Seppuku, the epitome of an honorable death to safeguard his selfrespect and that of his family. When she meets Pinkerton she is an early 1900s geisha in a country where social classes were tightly locked in castes with no crossable boundaries. That she knows this and that it has troubled her is clearly stated in her aria to her son, in Sharpless’ presence, “Che tua madre,” where she describes the indignities of the occupation she thought she was escaping when she married Pinkerton. Like all her friends in her business pursuing similar “marriages” she would have seen it as a way out of a dubious situation which, given her background, would have been intolerable. She is not like the others though; Butterfly doesn’t “play by the rules” and falls in love where love is not required. “FLOWER QUARTERS” It has become standard, given our contemporary cultural climate, to view Puccini’s lovely—and sad—opera, as representative of yet another instance of the West’s “rape” of the East in its expansionist imperialist progress through the modern world. In fact, Japan was never “colonized” in the present sense of the word. A hermetically

7

closed and severely regimented Imperial culture, it only reluctantly opened its ports (of which Nagasaki is prime) to Portuguese missionaries and adventurers in 1567. Having to spend long periods of time in Japan, these European merchants often hired Japanese girls from the “Flower Quarters” of Nagasaki to serve as wife–servants for periods extending to many months and sometimes years, a habit happily accepted by both cultures, and also financially beneficial to all. From time immemorial impecunious families had been selling their very young daughters to the “tea houses” of Nagasaki for geisha training and the girls—price and success depending on degrees of individual beauty—would come to look on this as an opportunity to help their families which otherwise would have suffered crippling poverty. MATTERS OF THE HEART One does not have to be a clueless young geisha from the turn of the century to misunderstand an impulsive expression of feeling between two people. One believes what one wants to believe and much heartbreak has come from this very misapprehension of the other’s heart. Love remains a mysterious, indefinable experience no matter what the culture, with vague and varying boundaries and “shelf-life” and the human heart remains a locked room with a lost key. PINKERTON What about Pinkerton? I find him oddly moving. Very young, no doubt abroad for the first time, unknowing, sensual, ram-

PROGRAM NOTES

bunctious and clueless he does as thousands of foreign men in Japan for centuries: he gets himself a pretty geisha with whom to cohabit for as long as he stays in the country until it’s time to go. Writing to Sharpless later, he naively imagines she would forget him as soon as his back was turned and that would have been just fine. The depth of distress in the music that brings him back, his soul in turmoil at the end, shows that he has finally—albeit too late—understood the enormity of the situation. SEPPUKU Madama Butterfly takes place in the shadow of the Hara-Kiri or, as the Japanese prefer to call the awe inspiring, terrible ceremony: Seppuku. The knife enters the stage with her, nestled in one of her sleeves, and it can be said that the whole opera is a relentless progress towards it…. Always a public act intricately tied to feudal mores, Seppuku represented a way to an honorable death worthy of and severely restricted to the aristocratic warrior class of the Samurai. In and out of favor, revered and derided through the centuries, it was practiced as lately as 1970, when the reactionary writer Yukio Mishima spectacularly (and ineptly, as it turns out) disemboweled himself. It’s essential to the act of Seppuku that there be witnesses to ensure and protect the dignity and seriousness of the occasion, however unwilling. This is why Butterfly asks that Pinkerton come himself in ½ hour to pick up the child. Presumably devoid of hysteria of any kind, and oddly non-melodramatic in con-

www.playbill.com

ception, ideally, the deed is performed in high ceremony in the presence of as many officials as possible, and designed to have Form completely control vulgar Emotion. When a woman felt the need to commit the act, it was called Jigai and the action was to sever the carotid artery at the neck, which ensured a faster death by exsanguination. It was considered that a woman could not possibly withstand, or was unworthy of, the extreme pain which a disembowelment entailed which was the test of the courage and pride of the Samurai. This is Butterfly’s case, and it is important to understand that her act is not commensurate to an act of impulsive reaction as a bullet in the head, an overdose of drugs, or a dagger in the heart (Butterfly is most definitely not Juliet), but a clear-headed decision to end a life that cannot be lived with honor.

SYNOPSIS

non-BLO space

ACT I The U.S. Navy Lieutenant B. F. Pinkerton has contracted a match with the geisha Cio-CioSan (Madama Butterfly) arranged by the marriage broker Goro. The American consul, Sharpless, warns of the danger in this arrangement: the girl may not regard her vows with the same carefree and casual spirit that Pinkerton expresses. After the brief wedding ceremony, the guests toast the couple but are interrupted by Butterfly’s uncle (a Buddhist priest—the Bonze), who curses her for renouncing her ancestral religion. Pinkerton sends the guests away and comforts his frightened and shaken bride. He assures her of his love which she ecstatically returns. ACT II Three years have passed and Cio-Cio-San steadfastly awaits her husband’s return and rejects any doubts expressed by her faithful servant Suzuki. Goro tries to interest her in another suitor, the wealthy Prince Yamadori, but Butterfly refuses. Sharpless arrives with a letter from Lt. Pinkerton which tells of his marriage to an American girl, but moved by Butterfly’s passionate devotion (and by a devastating revelation) cannot, in the end, break the news. A ship is seen in the harbor—it is Pinkerton’s. Butterfly and Suzuki fill the house with flowers and begin their vigil. Dawn breaks… there is no sign of Pinkerton. Finally he arrives accompanied by Sharpless and Pinkerton’s new wife, Kate. Butterfly eventually sees the desperation of her unbearable situation and accepts the agonizing choice she must make.

INVEST IN THE FUTURE OF OPERA Boris Goldovsky was a visionary teacher, stage director, conductor and impresario. His pioneering work profoundly influenced generations of artists and shaped the performance and popularity of opera in America. Many opera enthusiasts remember his informative and entertaining Saturday Metropolitan Opera intermission talks, books, lectures, training workshops and performances. Locally, he began the New England Opera Theater under the sponsorship of New England Conservatory and was director of opera development at the Tanglewood Music Center. His students included Sarah Caldwell, Phyllis Curtin, and Sherrill Milnes among many others. Planned gifts enable BLO to continue to produce high-quality opera for the community and to educate and attract the next generation of audience, supporters and opera professionals. Membership in The Boris Goldovsky Society is given in recognition of those who have made a provision in a will, living trust, deferred gift plan, or retirement plan that will benefit BLO. BLO thanks the members of The Boris Goldovsky Society for Planned Giving.
