FROM THE GENERAL & ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Welcome to Così Fan Tutte, the third of four new productions in BLO’s 2012/13 Season. We invite you to escape the remaining vestiges of a New England winter and join us on a lush Neapolitan beach, envisioned by our own John Conklin and beautifully brought to life by our partners at A.R.T. The panoramic skies and pristine sands (yes, real sand!) provide an evocative backdrop for an opera that is a subtle balance between farce and a melancholic story of love and desire. At the helm of this production, we are particularly thrilled to have Sir Thomas Allen with us as both Stage Director and in his signature role of Don Alfonso, in his BLO debut. Our earliest conversations with Sir Thomas exposed a shared belief that the music and libretto of Mozart and Da Ponte transcend the glib and stereotype for universal truths rooted in deep humanity, unlike popular opinion of the opera in its own time. From its first performance in 1790 until the 20th century, the opera did not receive the recognition as a masterpiece that it does today and was often dismissed as an absurd tale depicting women—and men—as idiotic and inconstant. But in Così Fan Tutte, nothing is ever quite what it seems. Beneath the surface is the bittersweet heartbreak of a joke gone too far. It is, upon further consideration, a dramatization of our ongoing and all too human battle between reason and passion. BLO has assembled an international cast for this production. Joining Sir Thomas is Phyllis Pancella—who has been away from the company for too long—and returning BLO favorites, Sandra Piques Eddy and Caroline Worra singing the charming sisters. Their opposites are played by the dashing Matthew Worth, and Paul Appleby, a rising Metropolitan Opera star making his Company debut. BLO Music Director, David Angus, leads the orchestra in a seemingly musical commentary of the onstage antics. Oboes and bassoons tease us in the spirited overture, woodwinds seem to occasionally laugh, and gentle strings lure us into the hypnotic, tranquil swell of the sea as the voices soar above. The story is one for all time. I wonder how the characters’ emotional journey will touch each of you? We all know the folly of first love, and our human proclivity to be ruled by our passions, leaving reason and measure far behind. And we know that fate has a wry sense of humor. I hope you will be as charmed as I have been at the rediscovery of this classic opera. To love!

BOSTON LYRIC OPERA BOARD Welcome to Così Fan Tutte. This all new BLO production by Sir Thomas Allen with designs by John Conklin exemplifies BLO’s tenets of collaboration and community. We start with Sir Thomas Allen, who, through performing the role of Don Alfonso on all the world’s stages, is synonymous with the opera itself. We are so pleased to collaborate with Sir Thomas in his dual role with BLO as Don Alfonso and Stage Director. This BLO community, where artists want to work, attracts new-to-BLO talent like Sir Thomas Allen and Paul Appleby (called “a promising tenor with a good deal of warmth and agility, not to mention an unfailingly elegant sense of style” by Opera News) alongside returning talent like soprano Caroline Worra (Elettra in Idomeneo, 2010; the title character in Agrippina, 2011) and mezzo soprano Sandra Piques Eddy (Kate Pinkerton, Madama Butterfly, 2006; Idamante, Idomeneo, 2010). Much of our success as a collaborative community is owed to Artistic Advisor John Conklin whose gold-standard reputation attracts artists, seasoned and emerging, to BLO. It is their combined talent which truly serves as testament to the strength of the art we are creating. Join me in welcoming Sir Thomas Allen, John Conklin, and the incredible cast of Così Fan Tutte. SYNOPSIS Goaded by Don Alfonso, two young men make a wager that their girls will be utterly faithful no matter what (and with the stipulation that they must do anything he says for the next 24 hours). With the willing help of the girls’ maid, Despina, and acting almost as a theater director, Alfonso arranges a series of incidents and situations that put their relationships under pressure… and then sits back to see what happens. The presentation of the boys (now in dashingly exotic “Albanian” disguise) as potential new lovers first horrifies the ladies, but their resistance slowly crumbles. It is all pushed by Alfonso—as far as a double wedding—but the sudden reappearance of the original boyfriends precipitates confusion, embarrassment, uneasy consolation and, in the end, a kind of reconciliation.

PROGRAM NOTES In their first passion women love their lovers; in the others, they love love. —La Rochefoucauld (1613–1680)

People believe in free will, but they have not paid attention to the fact that our wishes and desires are necessarily caused by objects or factors quite entirely independent of us. Man exists as a creature of nature and nature is entirely amoral. Nature, lacking in both evil and good intentions, merely acts in accordance with necessary and immutable laws. —J J Rousseau (1712–1778)

How convenient a thing it is to be a “reasonable” creature since it enables one to find or make a reason for everything one has mind to do. —Benjamin Franklin (1706–1790)

It is universally acknowledged that there is a great uniformity among the actions of men, in all nations and in all ages, and that human nature remains the same, in its principles and operations. The same motives always produce the same actions. —David Hume (1711–1776)

I make myself laugh at everything for fear of having to weep. —Pierre-Augustin Beaumarchais (1723–1799)
