Your
Students’ Union The Students’ Union at BU, SUBU, is a hub for you to engage in a whole array of experiences from the moment you start. You’ll never get another time quite like this, so make the most of it! Led by students, for students, SUBU can really enhance your university experience, whether that’s helping you make friends, getting your voice heard, taking part in exciting activities and opportunities or providing you with advice and support when you need it. You automatically become a member of SUBU when you register as a BU student, which means you can get involved as soon as you start! You’ll always get a friendly welcome at SUBU, so pop in and say hi when you arrive. Leadership SUBU’s leaders are elected by BU students each year to make real changes and improve the lives of all students. Full-time and part-time Student Officers campaign locally and nationally to improve your uni experience and lead a community you can feel part of. Advice SUBU provides a free, independent and confidential advice service – check out the ‘Happy and Healthy’ section of this guide for details. Find SUBU in the Student Centre on Talbot Campus, and Bournemouth Gateway Building, Lansdowne Campus. You can find out more and book an appointment online: www.subu.org.uk/advice Societies, volunteering and more
minded people. You can volunteer with a charity or community group and dedicate your time to a good cause. You can even take part online through virtual volunteering or get involved with our sustainability work to ensure you leave a positive mark on the world. Great events and nightlife SUBU is lucky enough to have something truly unique to any Students’ Union – its own entertainment venue, housed in a converted Victorian fire station. The Old Fire Station will host many of the ‘We are Freshers’ events featured in the enclosed guide including huge club nights, unforgettable live music gigs, and stand-up comedy. After a difficult year it’s time to get back to doing what we all love, and there really is something for everyone. Dylan’s Kitchen and the Student Centre also host events throughout the year, as well as being great places to chill out between lectures and enjoy some great food and drink. You’ll feel part of the BU community in no time! BU, SUBU, ResLifeBU and SportBU work closely throughout your freshers’ period to ensure students aren’t misled by external organisations offering welcome events. We urge you to take care when booking tickets for events on social media. For the only list of official freshers’ events visit: www.wearefreshers.com or www.subu.org.uk
