Welcome to our ‘Where to stay’ guide

ow many times have you stayed at an hotel or guest house that purported to be dog friendly only to discover that, at best, your dog was tolerated? When so many of us see our holidays as the perfect opportunity to enjoy some quality time with our dogs, exploring undiscovered areas of the country, it can be devastatingly disappointing. And it was just such experiences that provided the inspiration behind this ‘Where to stay’ guide. Our mission was simple: to find hotels, guest houses, B&Bs and self-catering cottages that didn’t simply put up with dogs but welcomed them as part of the family and understood the needs and preferences of dog owners. What we were looking for was places to stay that were truly dog friendly rather than simply dog tolerant. We began by approaching all ‘dog friendly’ establishments. Were they interested in being reviewed by members of the Your Dog team?

Not surprisingly, not everyone accepted the challenge and even those that did were re e not guaranteed a place in our guide. But the establishments that do feature here were all selected because they placed dogs high on their agenda, offering a service that had the interests of dogs and their owners at heart. Of course, this isn’t a comprehensive guide — there are many good dog-friendly establishments out there that we haven’t been n able to include for a variety of reasons. But you can be confident that the accommodation featured here has been visited by genuine dog owners who are looking for somewhere to stay where both they and their pets feel at home. estling at the foot of Hampsfell and enjoying magnificent views across Cartmel Valley, Longlands was built in 1810. A secluded courtyard houses buildings that were once filled with the daily activities of dairymaids, housekeepers and gardeners and have now been transformed into nine peaceful holiday cottages. The restoration includes the old walled kitchen garden.

What gets Longlands at Cartmel into this guide? There are no hard and fast rules, other than not leaving your dogs unattended. Huntsman’s Cottage, where we stayed, Digger enjoyed long walks in the Lake District.

enjoys views of the parkland at the front of the house. It is comfortably furnished and houses the usual self-catering equipment, including a fridge-freezer and a dishwasher. There is a video, CD player, board games, and plenty of local tourist guide information on local attractions. It has one double room and a small twin room. There is just the one bathroom with full facilities — for a family this is probably not an issue but might be if two couples were staying together. The kitchen forms part of the downstairs area so there is no specific area to contain dogs. There is a small porch before entering the cottage, which enables

Although walks straight from the front door are plentiful there is no enclosed area, so toilet breaks have to be on a lead. Cartmel offers all the amenities of village life with a post office, grocery and several gift shops, including the Cartmel Village Shop, which lays claim to being the home of the original sticky toffee pudding. Further afield we drove to the coast at Grange-over-Sands and to our amusement discovered there was no sand! We then took in several of the lakes and the many beautiful walks.

Who Longlands at Cartmel would and wouldn’t suit A holiday here would suit all from young to old, families to couples. The appeal is both the tranquillity and the high quality but with perhaps more space and independence than an hotel.

What gets Miller Howe into this guide? The location is amazing and this renowned hotel and restaurant doesn’t disappoint on any scale. You are asked to keep dogs’ access to just the bedrooms and not the public rooms. Although dependent on the number of guests, you may be able to sit in the conservatory and — if the weather permits — in the extensive Alison and Purdey.

seated garden area with lawns that just tumble away down to the shore. There is a huge garden to walk the dogs round first thing in the morning and last thing at night. Our room had the most amazing view across the lake, and Purdey happily stayed in there while we dined. She was even provided with her very own smart water bowl that blended perfectly with the décor of the room. Everyone around the hotel was very good with dogs. I was particularly amazed at their tolerance and how they dealt with accidents, but perhaps less so once I’d met Martin and his Cockers, Betty and Doris. He clearly doesn’t feel that dog owners should settle for anything less than the best. As owners of a Cocker ourselves, we are clearly on the same wavelength! A sumptuous Miller Howe bedroom.

Friendly staff and excellent service make the Borrowdale a must for walkers and their dogs. All 36 rooms have TV, telephone, and tea and coffee-making facilities, and our room was spacious, ideal for two adults and two dogs. Dogs are allowed in two lounge areas — both with roaring fires and comfy seating — but not allowed in the dining room, the conservatory and the eating area of the bar.

What gets the Borrowdale Hotel into this guide? The staff were welcoming and pointed out where the dogs could go. They are allowed to stay in the rooms unattended and were welcome in the lounge areas. We were very comfortable here and didn’t feel worried that the dogs might misbehave and let us down. Who the Borrowdale Hotel would and wouldn’t suit The Borrowdale Hotel is certainly suited to walkers but it is secluded so unless you like a good walk then you’ll need to use a car, or the bus service from Keswick, with

a bus stop just outside the hotel. We felt that the hotel was more suited to middle aged or older walkers as it was very quiet. There were ground floor rooms suitable for disabled people, and for dog owners, too. Although we were only on the first floor, juggling the dogs, bags and opening the fire door was a struggle! The food at the Borrowdale is highly recommended, the menu changing daily.

Derwent Water is signposted and takes you through to Keswick. The whole route is 13km but can be shortened using the launches from High Brandelow or Hawes End (you can get a timetable for these from the hotel reception). Unfortunately the boats weren’t running when we went but they are dog-friendly, so if you want to shorten the walk, then check they’re eave ve e. running before you leave. riginally a family mansion, Overwater Hall is a strikingly handsome example of its period. Set amid the stunning natural beauty of the Lake District National Park, it is within a short drive of the popular centres of Lakeland; Keswick is only 10 miles away. The entrance of Overwater Hall sets the tone for the rest of the hotel, which still retains the charm and atmosphere of a family home. The character of this building has been thoughtfully maintained throughout. We were warmly welcomed and the staff were attentive and helpful. Dogs are allowed in the hall where there are comfortable sofas, also in the bar, but not in the dining room or drawing room. Bedrooms with bathrooms ensuite are generous and attractively decorated in keeping with the house as a whole. Dogs may sleep in the bedroom. The hotel is set in 18 acres of grounds

that you can explore with your dog. There are also a host of other walks thatt can be tackled from the hotel — a walk up Binsey or the more challenging Skiddaw. The surrounding fields are limited during lambing times and dogs should be on leads.

What gets Overwater Hall into this guide? You can imagine that dogs have lived in this house for many years and they still do. The owners have two black Labradors, Oscar and Bafta, so they are well set up for visiting dogs. A relaxed atmosphere prevails for dogs and humans alike.

calford Hall is set in its own extensive grounds about three miles north of Melton Mowbray. It has 88 bedrooms, two dining rooms, and nine training rooms, along with a gym and a games room. The hotel has a very grand exterior and has been tastefully decorated. It reminded me of a business rather than a holiday hotel, although this may change over time as it has only been promoted as an hotel for a year. The rooms are reasonably sized and I was pleased to find two large dog bowls and a picnic blanket in my room (this made a perfect throw for the bed when my naughty dogs crept up!). With a flat screen TV and tea and coffee-making facilities I was set up for the night!

What gets Scalford Hall into this guide? This is a beautiful hotel and the area is lovely. It is made for dog walkers, with some wonderful walks around the grounds and more further afield. Details of these are given to you as you check in. From our room you could pop outside very easily straight on to an open lawn. I was quite happy to let my dogs off-lead there to toilet and there is a dog waste bin outside the front of the hotel. While dogs aren’t allowed in the dining room, they can be left unattended in the bedrooms, and we were welcome to take the dogs into the Belvoir

Who Scalford Hall would and wouldn’t suit While the hotel is obviously promoted as a training centre, my husband and I would certainly go back. We were in a ground floor room, making it suitable for disabled people and for guests with dogs who have walking difficulties.

artmoor Holidays’ accommodation is on a smallholding in the beautiful, quiet Devon countryside, a short walk from Dartmoor National Park. The location is very rural, but local amenities including pubs are just a good walk or short drive away. The Shippen is the smaller of the two apartments; the larger barn accommodation sleeps six, also allows pets and is another beautiful living space.

What gets Dartmoor Holidays into this guide? Ellie enjoyed the well-fenced courtyard where she could be let free, and the Rayburn indoors to get close to after a long day’s walking. She could sleep in the kitchen on her own bedding and was allowed in other areas of the house, but not on the furniture. There is a garden Sheep graze behind the apartment.

to do her business (if we cleaned up immediately) but with ample walking on the doorstep, we didn’t need it. The accommodation is tiled on the ground floor apart from one seating area and upstairs had a wooden floor, so muddy paws were no problem. The courtyard area is dog-proof, so Ellie could roam outside and have a last let-out before bed. We were asked not to leave her unattended indoors. An Ordnance Survey map and welcome pack are supplied and walking opportunities are superb. Dartmoor National Park rises up behind the accommodation and spreads for miles. The information pack included three local vets, a list of good walks and a coastal map of places which did not allow dogs on the beach — a great addition, especially the vets. Ruth recommended three brilliant walks, two on the moor and another through beautiful woods a short drive away. We also visited Lydford Gorge, managed by the National Trust. The £3 entry (NT members free) was well worth it; the views from the bottom were amazing. Ellie was made welcome on a lead.

Larger families with young children would enjoy the accommodation but might find the surrounding area lacking in other activities to enjoy with their pet, although there is plenty to appeal to kids otherwise. The accommodation was very rural, but only a mile from the local pub and restaurant, which served good food and allowed dogs in the bar. You could walk if you were feeling energetic and didn’t mind a trek back uphill at night. Directly behind the apartment is farmland, with sheep and cattle grazing. For Ellie this was no problem, as she lives happily at home with both cattle and sheep and is obedient walking on the lead and at heel, but it is worth noting for less well socialized dogs who have less interaction with farm animals. Dartmoor is home to three MoD firing ranges and when in use these areas are out of bounds. Firing times are advertised.

shows in her choice of furnishings — very continental and chic. Adjacent to the hotel is the Granite Way which is an ideal early morning exercise run for the dogs and this links up with public footpaths in and around the village of Lydford. Just through the village is Lydford Gorge (see opposite page), which offers excellent dog-friendly walking and stunning views. Lydford is on the western edge of Dartmoor and offers good walking for those who want it but is well linked by road for those with other interests. We had a good walk with Milly and Hattie on the edge of the moors, and found two great dog-friendly pubs nearby serving good There’s good walking to be had here.

Lory wants to make the hotel even more dog friendly and the information pack she was preparing will take on board our comments about the need for more information specifically for dog owners regarding local facilities such as dog crèche and walking services and the possible restriction of access to land.

Who Lydford House would and wouldn’t suit Two of the bedrooms are on the ground floor and would be suitable for either ageing dogs or their ageing owners! Having spent time in both self-catering accommodation and hotels, as dog owners we consider self-catering to be the best option, especially if staying for a week or longer in one place. A hotel is OK for a couple of nights, but here you have both options. This is really from the dogs’ point of view, as I am sure the owners would rather stay in an hotel and be looked after than cater for themselves!

innowers is a wonderful barn conversion that sleeps up to 10. It is spacious and very well equipped. One of the four bedrooms is on the ground floor with an adjoining bathroom. The beds are all super king-size but can be split to make twins if required. There is a dishwasher, washing machine, electric hob and cooker plus a microwave in the kitchen area, with a large farmhouse table with 10 chairs around it.

What gets Winnowers into this guide? Winnowers represents self-catering accommodation at its very best. There is sufficient space for two or more families and their dogs. We received a wonderful welcome — a home-made Victoria Sandwich, a loaff of locally made bread, a pack of butter, six fresh eggs, a bottle of wine and a local newspaper. Simon and Sarah were very friendly, as were their daughters Abbie and Gemma. Netting on the post and rail fencing around the barn ensures the garden is secure for dogs. A public footpath passing through the property makes an easy early morning walk. Dogs should be kept downstairs and so we fixed a stairgate, found in the cupboard under the stairs, at the top of the stairs. The underfloor heating downstairs kept the dogs’ beds nice and warm.

We would definitely return and it would make a wonderful place to spend Christmas with the whole family. It is worth commenting that in this area of the country, a good navigator and a sense of humour are essential — the roads are very narrow but generally well signposted.

he farm and cottages are reached by a farm road off a small country lane and are delightfully secluded. Some of the cottages have fully enclosed gardens for the dogs to safely wander in. Our cottage was really warm and inviting, with tea and biscuits on the kitchen table — a bottle of wine was the icing on the cake! The kitchen is well equipped; there is a dishwasher, washing machine, microwave and electric cooker as well as an Aga style cooker. A games room is ideal for children and there is a covered swimming pool plus a play area, trampoline and croquet lawn.

Linda met us with her children and we were immediately made welcome the children rushing to make a fuss of Milly and Hattie. Their rescue dog Sandy is still quite a puppy, with plenty of energy, and very friendly.

Who Northcote Manor would and wouldn’t suit The cottages are ideally suited to young families with dogs but could be quite lively during summer holidays. For people looking for a quiet holiday this would be a fantastic base for walking with dogs during spring/autumn while children are at school. Travel cots are available. Baby-sitting can be arranged. During the season bookings are from Saturday to Saturday but out of season there is flexibility.

Dog-friendly places nearby ● Linda recommended an evening meal in The Black Venus at Challacombe (tel. 01598 763251), about seven miles away. Dogs are allowed in the public bar and the meal was well prepared and reasonably priced. ● The Old Station at Blackmoor Gate (tel. 01598 763520) is nearer but only allows dogs in the garden. The menu is reasonable but not exciting and very much suited to families, with a play area outside. ● The Fox and Goose at Parracombe (tel. 01598 763239) is dog friendly with an interesting menu and good presentation. We had an excellent lunch there with the dogs stretched out in front of the fire. ● We also enjoyed lunch with the dogs at Hunters Inn at Parracombe (tel. 01598 763230), and we visited The Bath Hotel in Lynmouth (tel. 01598 752238) for afternoon tea — the waitress offered them a biscuit, which they didn’t turn down! Knaresborough has plenty of places for dog walking, including Mother Shipton’s Cave, alongside the River Nidd. Within a short drive, Fountains Abbey near Ripon and Bolton Abbey in Skipton are both attractive walks. We enjoyed a two-hour walk in The Yorkshire Dales near Skipton, where you can let you dog run free as long as there is no livestock.

There are only three, so I would say that this bed and breakfast is for adults only. An ideal break, the B&B is beautifully decorated with a relaxing atmosphere. What gets The Harmony into this guide? Guests at The Harmony are left in no doubt that this is a dog-friendly establishment within seconds of arriving. In the unlikely event of escaping the notice of Millie, Nanette and Rob’s friendly Whippet X Boxer, the bowl of water at the base of the stairs that lead to the guest bedrooms is a giveaway. So, too, is the extensive montage of pictures on the walls showing snapshots of satisfied guests — canine, of course. All dogs are vetted by Millie, who is described by Nanette as “a fundamental part of the business”, but she is not alone. All linen — but not towels — is provided, and you only pay for the electricity you use. Dogs have access to every room of the property but it’s requested that they aren’t allowed on the furniture or on beds. As well as Whitby being a McDonald’s and Burger King-free zone, there are plenty of pubs that welcome dogs, while miles of moorland, countryside and beach beckon.

Who Paddock Cottage would and wouldn’t suit

who love peace and quiet, long walks and the sea air. It would especially appeal to people who would appreciate the olde worlde charm of this historical fishing port, with its narrow cobbled alleyways, individual shops, sandy beaches and fascinating smuggling, whaling and ship-building past. The cottage, which sleeps two to five people, is just big enough to cope with two people and one or two small to large dogs, although very large dogs like St Bernards would be a bit of a squeeze. It would also be suitable for a family of four (two adults and two children) and one small to medium-sized dog. Because access involves walking up a short, narrow, steepish path, this property wouldn’t be suitable for wheelchair users, people who aren’t very mobile, or young children in pushchairs, nor would it be ideal for large families or groups. It’s worth mentioning that there isn’t a parking space with the property, which means parking at the nearest pay and display — a minute’s walk away — to unload.

utgang Cottage is a traditional, stone, semi-detached cottage situated in the centre of Thornton Rust, a tiny village between Leyburn (which has a fantastic grocery with bakery, deli and butcher’s counters) and Hawes, which is famous for the Wensleydale Creamery. It is in the heart of Wensleydale, one of the most picturesque areas of the Yorkshire Dales and first impressions are fantastic. The cottage has a large entrance hall, ideal for mucky walking boots and wiping muddy paws. The beamed sitting room is comfortably furnished and has an open fire with coal provided, which tops up the central heating. There is also a cupboard full of maps so that you can plan walks in the area, a stereo and a colour TV and video. The stone-flagged dining room is well stocked with books and games to help while away the time on rainy days or The large double bedroom.

T The well-equipped k kitchen (a step down from the sitting room) boasts a fridge, ffreezer, washing machine, electric c cooker, microwave, kettle and toaster but beware of the very wobbly table and chairs! There is an enclosed dog-friendly garden, equipped with patio furniture and a barbecue, to the rear. On the first floor there is a huge double bedroom with wooden floor, brass bed and TV/DVD player, while the second bedroom has two single beds and an extra ‘put you up’ if needed. Both bedrooms are comfortable and bed linen is provided. The bathroom has a functional three-piece suite and an electric shower but don’t expect luxury and remember to take your own towels.

What gets Outgang Cottage into this guide? Location, location, location! The cottage itself has plenty of space and some pet-friendly aspects but it is definitely the surroundings that make it really dog friendly. There are numerous walks to be had right from the doorstep and some

dog-friendly pubs in the nearby villages. When reading the letting agency’s terms and conditions, the property sounded dog tolerant rather than dog friendly. However, it seems that the owner understands that for some of us, pets are family members.

Who Outgang Cottage would and wouldn’t suit This cottage would suit anyone wanting to escape the ‘real’ world for some peace and quiet and long walks, and with the right people it could even be quite romantic! Foodies will like it because of the array of Wensleydale cheeses available in Hawes and the award-winning fish restaurant in Aysgarth. Outgang Cottage would be OK for families because there is plenty of space downstairs but there are steps between rooms so it’s not really suitable for toddlers. It’s not the ideal choice if you want nights out either, as the nearest pub is a very dark 40 minute walk away. It is also only for those who are prepared to go without luxury bathrooms and power showers. If you like walking, the simple life and amazing scenery then this is the place for you and your dog.

There are four cottages and we stayed in Bracken Cottage, which was a beautiful, newly decorated stone building with a very modern feel. boasts a handmade four-poster bed with ensuite bathroom and Jacuzzi. Bed linen and towels are provided and there is central heating. A shared conservatory leads to a secure courtyard for the dogs to run around in. The nearest shops are three miles away.

What gets Thorney Farm Cottages into this guide? As soon as we arrived Carolyn showed us where we could walk the dogs and where the nearest dog-friendly pub was. The only rules were that we cleaned up after the dogs and didn’t leave them alone in the

cottage. Carolyn and William were very helpful, making a fuss of our dogs. They keep chickens, sheep and cows and we could walk through their field to reach the fishing lakes. Once out of their field we let the dogs off-lead for a run and walked towards Thorney Lakes, which were beautiful. When we returned we had two very dirty dogs, but a handy hosepipe washed down muddy paws. The cottage was fantastic and a weekend wasn’t long enough. Everyone was friendly including the other guests, and as we all had dogs everyone got on well.

Who Thorney Farm Cottages would and wouldn’t suit The cottages are lovely and the dogs were very welcome. It was lovely to be able to treat the cottages as home, as I allow our dogs to go on to the furniture and it’s really hard to stop them! The only problem is that there is nowhere to leave them if you want to visit the many attractions that don’t allow dogs, such as Glastonbury and Stonehenge, and even going to the supermarket meant leaving the dogs in the car.

The beach at Weston-Super-Mare proved to be a big hit with Oscar and Maisie.

“We met a few dogs on the beach, which was fun. The sea was really far out but we walked out to have a good paddle. I’d never been on a beach before and was very excited. I enjoyed chasing the seagulls but Oscar had to be reminded not to drink the water!”

he Old Cider House is in the pretty and historic village of Nether Stowey at the foot of the wonderful Quantock Hills. The couple’s black Labrador called Ozy is a big hit, greeting guests as they come and go and is extremely calm and well behaved. Dogs can sleep in a dog bed in the rooms but are not allowed on furniture or in the kitchen and dining areas. They can be left unattended while guests dine, plus a dog-walking service and kennels are available, although we didn’t use these. A pet information folder is provided plus a water bowl, home-made dog treats, and a supply of poo bags, all of which are free of charge. The dogs can go into the enclosed garden to toilet. Free-roaming hens supply eggs, and a vegetable garden provides delicious fresh produce.

What gets The Old Cider House into this guide? The Old Cider House is the winner of the 2008 Kennel Club Open for Dogs ‘Somewhere to Sleep’ Award. We stayed in the Poets’ Room, a basic but comfortable room where guests are invited to create a poem, which may be added to the ones already displayed. The dinner menu included home-made dishes such as game pie with rabbit, pigeon and pheasant, and chocolate and banana bruleé. Ian also runs a microbrewery, which guests can tour, and the village pubs host several guest beers.

he Ormonde House Hotel is a two-star facility in Lyndhurst village, situated in the heart of the New Forest, which offers friendly, relaxed accommodation. Dogs aren’t allowed in the restaurant of the main hotel, but are very welcome in the self-contained Pinewood and Linwood suites, which are in the grounds of the hotel, where you can fully relax in your surroundings. We stayed in one of the Pinewood suites, which had a very spacious conservatory attached — ideal for cleaning muddy paws after walks in the New Forest. Little touches like towels and a throw were supplied, which was very useful if you allow your dog on to the sofa. We breakfasted in the conservatory each morning although the option

to eat in the main hotel was available. While there are no cooking facilities in the cottage, ample breakfasts are supplied every day consisting of cereal, bread for toasting, juice, croissants, muffins, yoghurts, and tea and coffee making facilities. We also enjoyed a very nice evening meal at the Ormonde, which I would recommend, although there are numerous other places close by where you can enjoy a meal. The Pinewood suite is adjacent to the hotel but despite this you feel you have total privacy in a very relaxed setting and while not the most luxurious accommodation, it certainly provided everything we needed for a comfortable and memorable stay.

A five-minute walk up the road leads into the main village and the New Forest museum and visitor centre, as well as some welcoming dog-friendly pubs.

What gets Ormonde House into this guide? As a family we have stayed at various establishments over the years that claimed to be dog friendly but ultimately proved otherwise, whereas during our stay at the Ormonde we felt totally relaxed and at ease with our dogs and thoroughly enjoyed the break. The location is ideal for exploring the New Forest and enjoying a multitude of wonderful walks, which the dogs loved. We were provided with a very useful list of attractions that included beaches, veterinary surgeries plus a comprehensive list of dog-friendly places and attractions to visit. The New Forest is a superb holiday or short break destination and offers an array of activities to keep the most energetic person happy, including horse riding, kayaking, birdwatching, gardens, museums and of course dog walking!

he Trigony House Hotel dates from 1700 and was a shooting lodge. Although the hotel is just off the busy A76 to Thornhill, it is set in four acres of gardens and woodland and the Lowther and Keir hills create a wonderful backdrop. The hotel is welcoming with open fires in the hall and dining room and Bess, the resident black Labrador, to meet you. It is comfortable with delightful rooms The dining room French doors open on to the garden.

Dogs are allowed to sleep in the bedrooms although discouraged from sleeping on the beds. Walks from the hotel are clearly marked on the map and there is plenty of walking to be done whether in woodland or open fields without having to get into the car.

ailey Mill is an 18th-century grain mill converted into a series of apartments within a farm complex. There is also a well established riding stable offering riding holidays for all abilities. Set in the unspoilt Scottish Border Reiver country Bailey Mill has unlimited walking through miles of forest and quiet country lanes. It is also a working farm and home to 250 sheep and 20 horses for racing, breeding and riding. The ground-floor self-catering apartments, set around a courtyard, have access to a paved area and garden which is fenced. Beyond are open fields, many of which you and your dog can explore. This is a busy place so there are always things going on, either at the riding centre or in the farming sheds. Inside the apartments p are compact p and

There is a communal laundry room, a games room with a pool table and darts board, and a fully licensed, friendly bar. It is possible to eat in the bar but also a choice of food can be brought to your apartment. Cassie received a great welcome, although dogs are not normally allowed in if other people are eating. There are musical evenings throughout the summer and a barn dance in June.

Children would love the open spaces, the busy atmosphere of the stables and farm with the resident sheepdogs. The three apartments range from sleeping two to six and there is certainly room for one or two small to large dogs in all apartments.

irdeny has seven chalets set in 3½ acres of natural habitat. The resort has joined the Green Tourism Business Scheme and has been awarded a silver grading. Guests are asked to try and adhere to this policy and recycling facilities are available on site. Our chalet had a double ensuite room, a twin room and a room with bunk beds.

Out and about

● Oban is 20 minutes from Taynuilt. There is a large stock of books, CDs and DVDs in the reception, which can be borrowed free of charge. Dogs aren’t allowed to be left alone in the chalet nor on to the furniture.

What gets Airdeny Chalets into this guide? Our wooden three-bedroom lodge was clean with comfortable furnishings and plenty of space — and an impressive home-baked fruit loaf sitting on the table when we arrived. Just outside the gates is the quiet road to Glen Lonan which offers an easy route to walk. At night we ate in the chalet, which was very well equipped. The local fish van visits the site on Wednesdays at 6.30pm. Jenifer appeared very relaxed about dogs in the lodges and there were no regulations about where we could walk or the resulting muddy paws Gaea made a friend while on her holiday!

The chalets look towards Ben Cruachan and Glen Etive. The Airdeny grounds are frequently visited by a host of wildlife including otters, red squirrels, deer, woodpeckers and many wild birds. There’s a wildlife diary which you can complete in the reception. There is plenty of information on local walks and attractions within the chalet.

Who Airdeny Chalets would and wouldn’t suit Airdeny offers a range of activities including painting courses, fused glass workshops, fly fishing and wildlife photography. It is an excellent location for a relaxing break where you can be as active or inactive as you like. It’s a beautiful place to sit outside on the decking and watch the wildlife.

Gaea’s view “I had lots of walks in the beautiful, peaceful countryside and slept soundly in my cosy chalet. I made a few friends and enjoyed watching all the different wild animals that came to say hello.”

he Braehead Cottage B&B has three rooms — one large twin, a large double and a small double. All the rooms are very spacious, with a TV with freeview and DVD player, and tea and coffee-making facilities. All the rooms are ensuite. There is a living/dining room with very comfortable leather sofas and a widescreen TV. There’s also a large selection of books and DVDs that you can borrow.

steps, at the bottom of which is the 24ft circular swimming pool (covered in winter). This whole area, including the garden, is enclosed so you can let your dogs out without any risk of them venturing off into the surrounding fields. There is patio furniture and a barbecue. The living room is small and cosy but has two sofas (one a bed settee) and a table and chairs. There is also a wood-burning stove in this room — a fantastic addition for winter visits. Off the living room is the kitchen, small but perfectly well equipped. This leads to a hallway — ideal for muddy boots and jackets. The bathroom and second double bedroom lead off the hallway. The main double bedroom, which is absolutely gorgeous with a very romantic feel, is on the first floor, reached via a wrought iron staircase. This room can also be accessed from outside the cottage. Both bedrooms have televisions and the there is a TV/DVD combi in the living room.

The cottage also boasts a hot tub under the gazebo, but the real winner for dog lovers has to be the dog kennel — a large converted stable, full of beds and toys! There are some heaters in this room to keep the dogs cosy in winter. It really is fantastic to be able to go out for a few hours and leave your dogs in the kennel knowing that they will be safe and secure, and can’t cause too much damage.

What gets The Old Coachhouse into this guide? This property is most definitely dog friendly; the enclosed garden is perfect and the dog kennel a godsend. The owners of the cottage have their

We took the dogs round one of the lakes where there were a number of sculptures. Although dogs are not allowed on the main beaches within the country park, there is a dog swimming beach for them to enjoy. I just love the way that this cottage is so safe for your dogs, the garden is enlosed and there is kennelling if you need it. While the cottage itself is clean and comfortable you still don’t feel overly concerned about the dogs being there — the flooring is dog friendly and the soft furnishings too (not white or cream!).

There are four cottages in total and we stayed in Holm Oak Cottage, which was immaculate and beautifully decorated. This cottage has three bedrooms, each a good size and tastefully arranged. The views from the bedrooms are breathtaking, with trees, hills and what seems like everlasting greenness! It was lovely to wake up to every morning. The lounge/kitchen is a large room towards the front of the cottage and is very welcoming with a cosy open fire, leather sofa and several nice little touches. There are two bathrooms, one ensuite, and all towels and bed linen are included. The cottage also has a meals service, where you can order a range of different meals and have them delivered. Liz Chapman is warm and friendly and when we arrived, she made sure we had plenty of logs and coal for the fire and gave us a booklet with details of all the dog-friendly restaurants/ pubs you could take your dog to and walks you could try. The surrounding countryside is fantastic — there is also a lot of wildlife including wild ducks, owls and squirrels. It’s a lovely environment for any dog and their owner.

Who Trenant Park would and wouldn’t suit These cottages would suit virtually anybody although some children might get a little bored as there are no swings or toys to play with, and while there are more than enough places to explore outdoors, inside the only things to keep them occupied are the TV and jigsaw puzzles. I think the cottages would be better suited to a group of adults. They are quite tucked away and the drive leading up to them is a long walk so having a car is advisable. Obviously there are ways around this, perhaps by getting a taxi into Looe and surrounding areas, or catching a bus.

ringworthy Cottages are set in the countryside about 10 minutes’ drive from Looe. There are eight cottages; we stayed in Weaver’s Cottage, which was one of the largest. On first impression it looked very appealing and the gardens were neat. The interior was impeccably clean but plain and quite old-fashioned. Our cottage had five rooms, with three bedrooms sleeping seven people. The kitchen/lounge is large but again very basic, with a meter that you have to top up when the heating goes off. There is also a two-bar electric fire. There are two bathrooms, one Sophie ensuite, and bed and Boo. linen and towels are provided. allowed everywhere, although we kept Boo on a lead, as we were worried he might chase the chickens or run on to the road. The main road is very close so dogs need to be on a lead or very well behaved, as there is no fencing to stop them running into it. Although the property was completely dog friendly, dogs are excluded in July and August. This seems a shame, as many people might like to bring their dogs for a summer break.

The cottages are dog friendly and dogs are allowed anywhere inside. You can also rent crates for car journeys or if you want to leave your dog for a short period while you go out. The surrounding Cornish countryside is absolutely beautiful, with lots of fields, hills and walks. On arrival we received a booklet with details of walks and dog-friendly beaches and pubs.

This property would definitely suit children and older couples. There was a large games room with a pool table and plenty of videos/DVDs, books and toys. Outside there was a heated swimming pool and lots of room for football or cricket. Children can also feed the chickens. In my opinion the property would be perfect if it was modernized a little. Enjoy some wonderful sea views.

Out and about ● I thought Cornwall was the most dog-friendly place I’ve ever visited! We ventured into Looe, which was about 10 minutes away by car and noticed that water bowls were often placed outside pubs, shops and restaurants for dogs to drink from. ● Almost every pub we went into accepted dogs, provided we sat in the bar area to eat and not the restaurant. Even when we wandered around the shops, shopkeepers happily invited us to bring Boo in. ● The walks around this area are fantastic. The harbour is lovely although dogs are not allowed on the beach but there are plenty of other beaches a short drive away that are dog friendly. ● We drove to Polperro, which has lots of shops and a lovely, dog-friendly pub on the corner as you walk towards the harbour. We did a coastal walk here, which we thoroughly enjoyed — lots of fresh air, fantastic sea views and plenty of exercise!

walk all day. Many well signposted walks are within easy driving distance. The island is full of pubs and restaurants selling local produce and locally caught fish. There is also the award-winning fish and chip shop at Brading which is quite close by. The owners are full of information about the island and what dogs can do and where they can go. Their own dogs enjoy a wonderful lifestyle, and use the grooming parlour on a regular basis. Although the owners are not always around, if you need any help you can call or email them. They have just about thought of everything your dog and you might need while staying at Badgers’ Watch — as their visitors’ book will testify! They are hoping to do up another dog-friendly holiday bungalow in the area in due course. The bungalow gets booked up well in advance so an early booking is essential. The whole island appears very dog friendly and a wonderful place for a holiday with dogs.

Who Badgers’ Watch would and wouldn’t suit Badgers’ Watch is an ideal let for older people, couples with parents, or couples with their dogs. However, it isn’t suitable for wheelchairs as there are steps up into the property both front and back. This is ideal for nature lovers, as red squirrels are resident in the garden and badgers call in the evenings. Food is provided for the animals and fish. The wildlife can be watched through the big French windows, which open out on to a decking area.

eahorses, a former Victorian rectory and owned by The Sheiling Trust, has four large ensuite bedrooms. Dogs are allowed in all the rooms apart from the dining room, but shouldn’t be left on their own in rooms. There are two conservatories and a large sitting room. Should you need to let your dog out during the night there is a quick and quiet route through one of the conservatories on to the back lawn. Dinner isn’t served unless by prior arrangement. However, there is a barbecue which you can fire up — Brenda and Boris are more than happy for you to bring your own food, wine and beer.

What gets Seahorses into this guide? Seahorses sits in just over a hectare of garden with plenty of lawn for dogs to romp and play on. The garden is walled and fenced, but dogs can get out of the back into the front garden and car park. There is a spade in the greenhouse for lifting the dog poo off the lawns. Out and about ● The Red Lion pub (tel. 01983 754925) serves delicious food and “loves dogs”. The Kings Head (tel. 01983 760351) in Yarmouth is another dog-friendly pub. ● The bus stops outside Seahorses and goes all round the island — dogs are welcome on the buses. ● There are loads of fantastic walks on the doorstep — the coastal path runs through the bottom of the garden. Beaches towards Freshwater are dog friendly in the summer but towards Yarmouth there are restrictions. There are maps all over the walls in the lobby and a tide clock in the reception area.

here is a property at Pekes Manor to suit just about everyone. Situated in the middle of the beautiful East Sussex countryside, down a private drive well away from main roads, Pekes Manor is located 12 miles inland from Eastbourne, and 18 miles from Brighton. It is fairly isolated but that is part of its charm, and it has spectacular views from some of the properties, including the one we stayed in, Tudor View. The décor is immaculate and the cottage we stayed in was beautifully and tastefully decorated.

What gets Pekes Manor into this guide? It has many additional facilities that make it a fabulous place to stay. First of all there is a heated indoor swimming pool, which is shared by all the people who are staying at Pekes. It is large and set in a building surrounded by exotic plants. Then there is a jacuzzi and sauna. While this is also shared, some of the properties have their own jacuzzi. There is also a hard tennis court, a table tennis table and a sandpit for children. Pekes Manor is certainly dog friendly. All the properties where dogs are allowed have private and totally enclosed gardens. The one we stayed in had the door to the garden going off the main bedroom, so it was easy for emergency wees at 3am! The rooms at Pekes Manor are tastefully decorated.

“I felt like the lord of the manor in these wonderful surroundings. The house had a great garden for me to explore. I’m sure I spotted the odd hen or two during my stay!” The swimming pool is a real bonus.

Who Pekes Manor would and wouldn’t suit These properties would suit everyone from a couple who wanted to get away for a week with their dog, to larger groups who wanted to have a country house party with some canine company. They really would suit country lovers who are looking to get away from it all but not people who don’t drive, or who want to be able to walk to the shops or local pub. As there are no obvious outdoor dog-washing facilities, the properties might be a bit too upmarket and immaculate for those who want to tramp across the countryside all day in bogs and swamps, and then bring their wet, slimy, mud-encrusted dogs back to crash by the fire. We loved it; it was comfortable, relaxing, had great views and a garden that I could put Digby into and then not worry. It felt grand enough to imbue a sense of spoiling ourselves but not so grand that we felt uncomfortable. I would have liked some poo bins however!

his small but cosy self-catering cottage sleeps up to five people (in three rooms), and looks directly over the sea at Seaford, a town on the East Sussex coast. It isn’t a big property but is spread over three floors. Beach Cottage is right on the seafront just outside Seaford centre; two of the three bedrooms have fantastic sea views and in the main bedroom you can sit in the window and watch the waves. There is one bathroom on the second floor. There are two flights

of stairs, both narrow, steep and open-sided. The ground floor consists of a living room with an open fireplace, a small room with a table and a wood burning stove, and a small galley kitchen.

What gets Beach Cottage into this guide? When I booked, the owner said that it wasn’t a luxury cottage, in fact it was a bit scruffy but homely — and that was exactly how it felt. It was a bit like staying at a friend’s house while they were away and I felt comfortable and at home. Beach Cottage is dog friendly — the owner has a dog who lives there when they are on holiday. As soon as you walk into the dining room, you spot the dog bowls. The owner asks that if your dogs sleep on the bed you bring a throw to protect the covers. While there is no garden, there is a large green area outside which has several poo bins and is good for last thing at night or first thing in the morning.

● The Beach Cottage website has a wealth of information on places you can visit nearby (some dog friendly, others less so). The highlight of this holiday though is the walks and the access to the South Downs. ● Eastbourne is only a short drive away if you fancy visiting a seaside town and having an ice cream while walking along the beach. ● There are lots of dog-friendly pubs The views from the around Beach cottage are fantastic. “You can s it in the win dow and watch the waves.” But the best thing about Beach Cottage is its proximity to fabulous walks. The beach is stony and not great for walking but the esplanade is long and good to walk on. Just outside the town you can get on to Seaford Head and walk along the cliff tops for miles.

Who Beach Cottage would and wouldn’t suit Beach Cottage would suit a couple, a family, or maybe two couples, and of course their dogs, who want to enjoy staying by the sea. It wouldn’t suit people who want an immaculate show home to stay in, or who like a lot of space, or who want ‘extras’. You can get about by public transport, but it would be better to have a car to explore the area and access some of the amazing walks.

Who Kilcolgan Bungalow would and wouldn’t suit There are steep steps at the front of the property which could be a problem for the less able-bodied although the entrance from the side is sloped and could be used as an alternative. Plenty of WCs and showers, preventing squabbles over the use of the bathroom, mean the bungalow is ideal for a larger family. A cot and high chair are also available on request. All in all this was a lovely property in stunning surroundings which I would recommend and definitely revisit.

Take to the hills Relax at the Castle Inn Hotel’s bar after a walk in the Purbeck Hills.

he Castle Inn Hotel is a family-run 16th century thatched pub and hotel. The rooms are ensuite, with tea and coffee-making facilities, and TVs. Dogs are allowed in the two comfy snug bars, which sell a wide range of wine and real ale. The large landscaped garden has won awards, with several terraces and seating from which to admire the views of the Purbeck Hills. Dogs are allowed in the garden if under control. Canine guests aren’t allowed in the restaurant, but food can be served in the bar areas and the garden.

What gets the Castle Inn Hotel into this guide? The reception is extremely friendly, with nothing too much trouble for the long-standing staff. Our room was warm, clean and non-dog smelling. Dogs may be left in your room during meals or during the day. With permission and if not overweight, they get a sausage for breakfast and sometimes a slice of beef in the bar at the end of the day. The food at the Castle Inn is excellent and varied. Lulworth village is very picturesque. It’s dog friendly but dog poo has to be picked up — there are receptacles in the village and in the main car park. Lulworth Cove is a five-minute walk

every direction from the pub, either down to the coast or up on the hills. The coastal path, which takes in some fantastic views, is very steep in either direction so could be a problem for less able-bodied people. The path up to Durdle Door is tarmacked and easy to walk up — wheelchairs have been taken up there, although I wouldn’t suggest it! I’d thoroughly recommend the Castle Inn to everyone at any time of the year.

he Mucky Paws Retreat is a wonderful 15th century cottage in rural Norfolk. There are six ensuite bedrooms and a dining room where dogs are allowed. Leigh and Kevin’s own dogs greet you happily. The rooms are beautiful, with digital TV and tea and coffee facilities — Leigh even brought us tea and cake on arrival. The beds are very comfy. The garden isn’t enclosed but the owners plan to do this and are also going to build a kennel. A dog-sitting service is available. Breakfast is delicious, with locally sourced produce and home-made jam. There is no separate guest entrance, so you can’t come and go without disturbing the owners, although I’m sure they don’t mind. The pale carpets made me conscious of bringing my wet and muddy dog in however.

What gets Mucky Paws Retreat into this guide? The property has a garden to let your dog out last thing at night and in the morning. Walks are plentiful and the owners are

huge dog fans, making a big fuss of Poppy. Leigh immediately asked if Poppy would go on the beds and provided throws. For dogs who don’t sleep on their owner’s bed, a dog bed and bowls are provided. An organic doggy bag is given at the end of the stay, containing a ragger, dental chew and treats. It is great to be able to take your dog with you at breakfast. There is plenty of information on dog-friendly attractions.

Who Mucky Paws Retreat would and wouldn’t suit This B&B really caters for couples or families with older children as younger children are only allowed by prior arrangement. It is very peaceful and there isn’t really anywhere for children to play apart from the garden. There is one ground floor room, suitable for disabled people. The rooms have quite low ceilings and original beams so anyone over 6ft will need to duck! This is a great place to escape to and appreciate the great outdoors, but if you’re looking for somewhere to party with your dog, it’s not for you. The nearest town is Swaffham, about eight miles away, but there is a village pub. The cottage is very traditional with original features such as an open fireplace

and beams. It is beautifully decorated and charming but if you prefer something modern than this is not for you.

Dog-friendly places nearby ● The Olde Windmill pub (tel. 01760 756232) in the village allows dogs everywhere except the dining room but there is plenty of seating outside. We didn’t eat but the food looked delicious! ● Thetford Forest Park (www. forestry.gov.uk/thetfordforestpark) is very close and great for dogs. Sandringham Estate is about 30 minutes away and dogs are welcome in the grounds. ● Gooderstone water gardens (www.gooderstonewatergardens. co.uk) has lots of lovely walks and dogs are welcome on leads. ● Within half an hour there are some dog-friendly beaches, including Heacham and Old Hunstanton, where Poppy loved swimming.

t was over eight years ago that Helen and Tony Richardson relocated to Norfolk and bought the derelict property and outbuildings that now successfully combines as their home and business. The first visitors came in July 2004 and it is easy to see why many return to stay in one of the three exclusive barn conversions that attained a five star rating from the outset. Our welcome email had included great directions that even without sat-nav eliminated any possible spousal conflict on map-reading skills! It yielded great walking as far as the eye could see and it was so relaxing after a journey to unload the car and unpack without having to worry that the dogs might escape. What gets White Lodge Farm into this guide There was a welcome letter along with a tray of basic provisions, including cleaning paraphernalia, a basket of logs, the local paper and an in-depth ‘Cottage Guide’ on everything, from how to work the washing machine, send a fax or find a pampering beauty treatment. It was a relief to have arrived straight from work on a Friday and be able to survive until the next morning without visiting the local store. With prior notice, groceries can be delivered to await your arrival and a local

catering company will either deliver or cook for you at the cottage – the menu looked mouth-watering! Even more delightful was a letter from Oxo and Tia, the resident Doberman and Weimaraner, addressed to our dogs and giving them the ‘house rules’ for four-legged guests, as well as a welcome gift of a towel each (to keep), poo bags and dog biscuits.So practical, yet really appreciated. Despite us having come well equipped, we liked the way this had been delivered and it left us in no doubt that our dogs were truly welcome. Also, the central heating was on and the under-floor heating in the kitchen was heaven to the old joints of our Labrador, especially after our long walks. It didn’t matter to us that the dogs weren’t allowed on the furniture or in the bedroom, or that they had to remain on

the lead in the immediate vicinity around the barns and near the resident horses, as just beyond the doorstep of the cottage were miles and miles of bridleways and footpaths to enjoy walking. Even when it came to clearing up in the garden after the dogs, there was a specific bin near the back door to deposit used poo bags! The charming village of Hingham is a ten-minute walk, with plenty of well stocked shops. We can recommend the local butcher (great sausages!) and the general grocer Harrods (yes they’d even had a dispute with another well known store over the use of their family name), though we suggest if you walk there, two of you go; one to hold the dog, as although there is somewhere to tie the dog outside, it is on a busy road. On the way back we called in for a drink at The White Hart pub, and the dogs were given a bowl of water by the owner. A guest book was an up-to-date reference for good places, and many with The charming village of Hingham is close by.

Eating out ● The Gamekeeper at Old Buckenham, (tel. 01953 860397), is a short drive away. Booking is strongly advised as the food is excellent and the atmosphere buzzing – dogs were made very welcome. ● The Kings Head, Bawburgh, (tel. 01603 744977). Dogs are welcome in the garden and bar area, with guests with dogs being asked to occupy tables nearest the door. Menus change daily and booking is essential. ● The lounge of the Victoria Hotel at Holkham (tel. 01328 711008), is just a few minutes walk from Holkham Beach and is great for a pint after a walk on the beach.

Bigger parties can rent more than one cottage and while we were there the other two properties were occupied by several generations enjoying a weekend break. Disabled access was good, as the property is all on ground level.

llands Farm Barn is a converted barn in beautiful north Norfolk. The barn has a gallery bedroom (with a king-sized bed and a TV and DVD player) which overlooks the open-plan, spacious living room with comfortable seating for four people. The highlight of the barn is the real log burner, a welcome feature on a chilly winter evening. The table seats four, and there’s a fully fitted kitchen with a cooker, microwave, dishwasher and fridge.

What gets Ollands Farm into this guide? Kim and Mary Ann are dog owners and their dogs Ruby, Finn, Monty and Lizzie will welcome you on arrival. Tea, coffee, milk and biscuits were provided for our stay and even treats for Poppy. Outside the property is a hosepipe so that dogs can be cleaned on a muddy day, and a doggy towel is also provided. The secure courtyard garden means that you can let your dog out safely. There are some lovely walks nearby and Norfolk’s a great place to holiday with your dogs — Ollands Farm Barn making an ideal base for touring the area. This is a lovely tranquil place to stay and relax with your dogs. Kim is planning to add an outdoor kennel so that dog owners can leave their pets safely and secure in a kennel, if needed.

It is also difficult for dogs (although Poppy managed it just fine), and if you had a larger dog who couldn’t get up the stairs and is used to sleeping with you, this could be a problem. The barn’s peaceful and secluded location means that if you enjoy a leisurely stroll to one of the local dog-friendly pubs in the area, then this is ideal place to stay. The courtyard garden is safe for doggy exploring.

he brochure describes Ffynonwen as retaining the feel and character of a traditional Welsh farm and it’s a very apt description. The 300-year-old farmhouse has been updated and extended to incorporate a number of comfortable ensuite double and twin rooms and a family suite, all with TVs, and tea and coffee-making facilities. In addition there is the garden suite, which is wheelchair friendly, and comprises a double bedroom, lounge, conservatory, and walk-in shower/bathroom. Just one mile from the sea, Ffynonwen is set in 18 acres of farmland. Resident on the farm are pigs, a horse, chickens and three dogs. Cattle graze the fields in summer.

Dogs are allowed in all areas of the guest house, except the dining room, and you’re free to exercise your pet in the fields and woodland, complete with streams and lakes, that surround Ffynonwen. All Neil and Stefani ask is that you keep dogs on leads in the yard,

which is home to the free-range chickens, and that you shut the gates behind you. If your dog is unfamiliar with livestock, it would be wise to exercise caution. Meals can be taken in the restaurant or the comfy bar, where your dog can join you. We enjoyed an excellent home-cooked meal while Monty settled down with the resident dogs beside us. The atmosphere at Fynonwen is friendly and very much geared to making dog owners — and their pets — feel at home.

When Monty jumped up on to the bed in our room (not something he’s allowed to do at home), Stefani was immediately reassuring and explained that the guest rooms are all provided with throws on the beds to guard against muddy paws — so no problem. Neil and Stefani are happy to take more than one dog and have even had three dogs to a room before. Dog-owning guests are provided with a leaflet detailing information on nearby beaches, places to visit and local dog-friendly pubs. Towels are on offer to dry off wet dogs after exploring the beautiful countryside, and there are treats available in the bar.

Who Ffynonwen would and wouldn’t suit If you’re looking for a genuinely dog-friendly place to stay, where the welcome is warm and the surroundings breathtakingly beautiful, then Ffynonwen will tick all the boxes. The accommodation is comfortable and the food is good but it’s in really having dog-owners’ interests at heart that Ffynonwen triumphs. This part of Wales is off the beaten track; it is full of charm and a kind of peace and tranquillity that much of mainland

Britain has lost. It might not be lively enough for some children but mine (aged 13, 11 and seven), who are used to a fairly rural lifestyle, absolutely loved it, and would definitely go back. and upstairs two bedrooms — one with a double bed and the other with two singles — and a shower room. Bed linen is provided but not towels. Dogs are not allowed upstairs or on the furniture and there are stairgates to help you keep to this stipulation. Dogs should not be left in the cottage alone unless they are in a crate. The cottage has a small, enclosed garden, which is ideal for dogs and even proved Monty proof!

What gets Ty Newydd into this guide? Owners Dawn and Jay are very welcoming and reserved a special ‘hello’ for Monty, who lapped up all the attention. Just down the road from the cottage, they have an enclosed paddock where guests can go and exercise their dogs. The paddock contains picnic tables so guests can sit back and relax if they want to and get to know the other holidaymakers in the cottages while their dogs explore and sniff about. When we visited they’d even left out some agility equipment so my daughters wasted no time in setting up some weave

There are some wonderful walks in this area (all detailed in the cottage), several from the cottage itself and Dawn directed us on a lovely woodland walk that led to picturesque Ceibwr Bay.

Who Ty Newydd would and wouldn’t suit Couples or families and their dogs who would enjoy exploring this beautiful part of Wales with its spectacular coastline and picturesque villages. Pembrokeshire offers a freedom and openness that your dogs will love and you will find exhilarating. Ty Newydd cottages are traditional and charming. They are not luxurious but comfortable and relaxing and provide an environment into which guests would be happy to take their dogs. The Wright family are certainly up for another visit!

he Royal Sportsman Hotel is located in the middle of the town of Porthmadog, North Wales. It is easy to find, with a large garage for undercover parking. The hotel has 28 bedrooms on three floors and the Orchard patio rooms are most suitable for dog owners. It was lovely to be greeted by Gelert, the hotel owner’s rescued sheepdog, and nice to be given a list of nearby walks. The hotel is traditional and well presented, with friendly and accommodating staff. The only downside is that there is nowhere to let dogs out first thing in the morning or at night.

What gets The Royal Sportsman into this guide? Dogs are allowed in the aptly named Gelert’s Bar where they can relax by the open fire while you enjoy a drink and an excellent meal. You are also allowed to leave dogs in the rooms so you can eat in the dining room. You can even leave your dog with the staff in reception if you need to pop out, which is a particularly nice touch. I am a huge fan of Wales and while

Nursery Woods is just up the road and perfect for a morning stroll. The dogs loved running in the woods and chasing squirrels — although due to a miscalculated jump Spigit did end up in the river! If you forget to take any dog essentials there is a pet shop in the town.

Who The Royal Sportsman would and wouldn’t suit The Royal Sportsman is ideal for couples or families, and is close to all the local amenities, but you can go further afield if you enjoy walking and peace. The ground floor patio rooms give excellent access for disabled people or owners of multiple/large dogs. If you’re not used to walking your dog on a lead regularly you may struggle because the nearest off-lead walk is approximately 10 minutes away. Once there it is a nice circular walk, bringing you back past the harbour to the hotel.

Dog-friendly places nearby ● Festiniog and Welsh Highland Railway both allow dogs on their trains. There is a flat charge of £2.50 per dog and it is well worth the trip. We took the train to Festiniog and even though my two dogs took up the whole passageway, making it difficult for staff to get past, they didn’t mind and made a great fuss of them. There are several areas on site where you can responsibly let your dog off for a run: two fields (one above and one below the lodges) and also a wooded walk where The countryside is unspoiled and the pace of life relaxing.

Catch the kites If one bird is synonymous with Mid Wales, it is the red kite. With its vast wingspan (up to 1.7m), it was voted ‘Bird of the 20th century’. No more than a 10-minute car journey from Oak Wood Lodges is Gigrin Farm, the official red kite feeding station, where you can watch these birds feed.
