Be a responsible owner Even the best groomed and cared for dogs are at risk of developing a parasitic worm infection. Thankfully, it is relatively easy to help protect your dog against the effects of this by using a wormer such as the market-leader Drontal at least every three months to kill worms before they compromise your animal’s health. Fortunately there is plenty dog owners can do to help eliminate the risk. These tips should help to prevent worms from becoming a problem for your pets and family: ● Always clean up after your dog and dispose of poo safely in designated bins. ● Always wash your hands after handling animals or gardening to prevent the spread of zoonotic worms. ● Always cook meat thoroughly and do not feed your dog raw offal or unsterilised pet food. ● Use effective flea control both on the animal and in the home to help reduce transmission of dipylidium caninum (the flea tapeworm). Regular and thorough cleaning of your dog’s bedding and bowls will also help to combat a range of illnesses caused by poor hygiene.

Gypsy in my soul Enid Blyton days in a most unusual B&B f you ever read Enid Blyton’s ‘Five Go Off in a Caravan’ and dreamed of staying in a traditional gypsy caravan with Timmy the dog, this is the break for you. Two-legged visitors are greeted in the gaily-painted caravan with a delicious home-made cake, and four-legged guests aren’t forgotten with a cosy dog bed in a cubby underneath the bunk bed, treats, bowl, poo bags, and a towel. bathroom facilities are just a step away, with shower and WC. You have full use of the cottage’s pretty garden, with fantastic sea views. However, the drive doesn’t have a gate, so keep an eye on your dog, although the road outside is quiet. You can leave the dog in the caravan or in an outdoor secure dog run, but there’s so much to offer a short step away. The caravan is on the edge of the historic Levant Mines area, part of the Cornwall and West Devon Mining World Heritage Site, with dogs and owners welcome to explore various National Trust trails around the ruined engine houses, view the only Cornish beam engine working on its original site, the amazing coastline, and wildlife. Penzance, Marazion, Land’s End, and St Ives are short drives away. An information pack in each property gives the lowdown on beaches and local dog-friendly attractions. Well-behaved dogs on leads are not just tolerated at Sandbank, but welcomed. The fenced patio/garden areas for the bungalows and ground floor apartments are especially dog friendly; so, too, are the practical heavy-duty laminate-style floors in the living areas of all properties. Proximity to the beach and location for visiting other parts of Cornwall are plus points: Land’s End, St Ives, Penzance, and Newquay are all within easy reach. You are asked to take dogs out on to the lane behind for morning and evening walks. Poo bags are not provided, but if you don’t clear mishaps from the garden and bin them, you’re fined £20 per poo! A shared shower house has a hosepipe for muddy dogs and there’s a full accident cleaning kit in each cottage. You are asked not to let your pets on to furniture or leave them

There is a gas fire in the open-plan sitting room/kitchen, a dishwasher, washing machine, fridge, freezer, and brushes for cleaning. You need to take your own dog towels. The visitors’ book is very complimentary: “cosy, comfortable, clean, and relaxing”. The cottages each have their own fenced outside area and are situated in an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the South Hams. There is a working farm adjacent with cattle and sheep, so keep the gate closed! The coastal path is close by and Hope Cove a mile down the lane. Maps and ideas for walks can be found in the cottages. The Port Light Hotel (also owned by Sean and Hazel) is a 10-minute walk uphill and a perfect spot to view the sunsets. The food is excellent and some cottage guests even call in for breakfast. Dogs on leads are very welcome (check paws and shoes are free of sheep poo). Gateway to a great weekend.

Down on the farm Great views — and a cream tea welcome! uffin House is part of the main farmhouse built in 1627 with original tiled floors and oak beams. The view overlooking the sea was stunning and you can admire the sunset over the horizon from the garden. The owner, Mrs Olde, was very welcoming and gave us advice on good walks for Tilly and dog-friendly pubs in Hartland. The large hallway had enough space for coats, boots, and Tilly’s crate. The living room had a comfortable corner sofa, toy box, board games, DVDs, videos, and an electric heater. Upstairs

were four bedrooms, two family-sized bathrooms, and additional toilet. The heating and hot water are included in the price but electricity is by £1 meter. Mrs Olde said £5 would normally last a weekend stay for four. A wooden stair gate stopped Tilly getting upstairs. She was not allowed on the furniture and muddy paws had to be wiped before allowing her back indoors, all reiterated on a laminated card in the kitchen. Owners are asked not to leave dogs on their own in the cottage at any time. A welcome sight on arrival was a cream tea left for us, a goody bag for Tilly with biscuits, chews, poo bags, and a towel plus an information guide about the cottage and local amenities. Hartland boasts several shops, such as a butcher’s, baker’s, and

grocer’s, plus three pubs. The nearest supermarket is in Bideford, a 20-minute drive away. There’s an array of walks directly from the farm, from 20 minutes to two hours. We walked the coastal paths and enjoyed fantastic scenery. The cottage has a paved courtyard with a latching gate where we could let Tilly loose to toilet, but we were understandably asked to keep her on a lead outside the garden as it led directly on to the farm. Finding a dog-friendly beach was tricky. Hartland Quay was a 10-minute drive away, but a dog-free zone. Clovelly is a privately-owned village which asks a charge towards its upkeep and dogs must be kept on leads. Further afield at Instow we found the tide was out and it was muddy, so although dogs are allowed, it wasn’t tempting. At last we found Westward Ho!. The sand and pebble beach was covered in kite buggies and dog walkers with pets running free — Tilly was in her element. There was also a large green called The Burrows where dogs can run free, with plenty of poo bins!

Park life Fun for families — and their dogs! n arrival, we met Chris and Heidi Speed who own and run the park, which has been in the family for over 30 years. They greeted us with open arms and fussed Tilly. Chris was very informative about local dog-friendly pubs and told us there were a huge number of walks starting directly from the park. Our bungalow had a patio and was clean, spacious and included all you needed for your stay. One or two missing items, including salt and pepper pots, a sieve and a jug were readily replaced. touches for the dog upon arrival. Tilly immediately made herself comfortable on the furniture. Chris and Heidi did not mind at all, as this is a dog-friendly establishment and they want the dogs to have a good holiday too! Most guests bring their own rugs to cover the furniture, as we did, which they welcome. Each bungalow has a welcome book with all the information you need, including vets, supermarkets, chemists, doctors, hospital, dentist, police, local fisheries, shops and local beaches and walks. One walk pack is published by The National Trust and shows you nine circular walks you can do along the Dorset and East Devon Coast. Make sure you check the terrain to suit your ability, as one we tried was

very hilly! Owners are asked to keep dogs on leads in and around the park so as not to upset local residents, and to place poo in bins provided. Dogs can be left unattended in the bungalows if you wish but the owners ask that you leave a mobile telephone number just in case. Dogs are allowed at most local attractions, usually on a short lead, but check in advance. These include parks, a donkey sanctuary, and a mill with trout fishing and riverside walks.

In dinosaurs’ footsteps Middle Cottage.

A paradise for dog walkers. was really looking forward to visiting the Jurassic coast, where dinosaurs roamed and Thomas Hardy gained inspiration. Driving down quaint country roads and through pretty villages, it is like stepping back in time. West Knighton is tiny and very rural. Middle Cottage is in a row of four classic thatched cob cottages, spotlessly clean, deceptively large, modernised to a high standard but retaining character. The enclosed rear garden was perfect for Coco to explore. Fresh flowers and a bottle of wine awaited us, with milk in the fridge. There were no dog-friendly extras, such as towels, beds or bowls and I couldn’t find an outdoor bin for dog poo. Dogs are not allowed upstairs or

They suggested Lulworth Cove and nearby Ringstead Bay to visit with Coco. The walk back was hair-raising as the roads are unlit and there is no pavement. Next day we discovered a torch in the back porch, but it would be better hanging near the front door so it is easier to find. Going to Lulworth Cove took about 15 minutes and it is one of the loveliest stretches of this coast with a good

We let Coco off-lead at Man of War cove to race around while we searched for fossils. We drove to Tyneham village, abandoned in the Second World War when the Army moved in. Villagers were promised they could return but were never allowed to and it remains waiting and hauntingly beautiful as it falls into disrepair. Volunteers are working hard to retain what is left and the visitors’ centre is wonderful. A walk to Worbarrow Bay was fantastic with amazing views. Ringstead Bay has a shingle beach with uncovered sand when the tide goes out. Coco enjoyed running here before we headed home, relaxed. Middle Cottage is a lovely base, but it did feel to us like a place that accepts dogs rather than making them especially welcome.

Beauty treatments are available at additional cost. Nearby Studland Bay House Gardens are open to guests at any time. They are full of azaleas and rhododendrons in spring but magnificent in late autumn too. There is a cricket ground for guests to use during the week for a game of cricket or rounders (quick cricket set available). A high ratio of hotel staff to visitors makes for a relaxed atmosphere and plenty of pampering. All ages and disabled people are well catered for. Dogs can be left in the rooms, but bring a bed. If you want to leave your dog during the day, off-duty staff will be happy to look after him for a small fee; just ask at reception. Go organic Great walks and fantastic farm food. estled in its own secluded valley, Hindon Organic Farm enjoys an idyllic location. As a working farm with animals, guests are asked to keep dogs on a lead at all times. The resident dogs: two sheepdogs; a terrier; Moriarty, Watson and Sherlock the Labradors; and Scaramanga the Chihuahua all got on fine with Tattle. The farm is a beautiful 18th-century property, full of olde worlde charm and owner Penny Webber made us feel at home right away. There was a Bonio in our room with an organic meat bone available on request. Dogs aren’t allowed on the furniture — there’s a crate/cage to borrow if needed. A small garden at the front is pretty well enclosed but not escape-proof (dogs should be on leads anyway). Dogs can’t be left unattended in rooms, but left in a stable for a short while. The farm provides a bowl and cleaning materials for any ‘accidents’ and poo bins are outside. Guests (and supervised dogs) are welcome to use the family sitting room, but your pet is generally not allowed in the dining room, although Hindon Farm has a common sense approach depending on the individual dog and sensibilities of other guests. Penny was in the process of writing a dog owners’ guide. Breakfast is a fantastic, free range, organic affair, with a proper fry-up and vegetarian/vegan options. The farm has a list of recommended places to eat out and most nearby pubs

The hallway, kitchen, and dining room are tiled, perfect for wet weather and muddy paws, particularly as the sitting room carpet is cream (eek!). While the owners do not encourage you to leave your dog unattended indoors, if you really need to he could be left in the kitchen and dining area. The cottage is very large and would be plenty big enough for a large family or a group of friends. It’s perfect for a break in any weather: the log fire keeps you cosy in the sitting room, there’s a woodburner in the dining room, and the garden would be great for a summer barbecue. The owners clearly have younger children or grandchildren who come to stay, as there is a well-stocked playroom and play equipment outside. The cupboards were packed with cleaning equipment, so no worries if there is an accident. The garden is

She even recommended a good dog-friendly pub nearby (see below). You are on the edge of the beautiful New Forest, with miles and miles of dog walks on your doorstep. The owners provide a folder packed full of information on attractions and places to visit nearby, but unfortunately very few of these seemed to allow dogs. The cottage offers everything you need for a weekend or week’s stay and I thought it was the ultimate in luxury. We really didn’t want to come home!

This only applies to the beach closest to the hotel, you still have plenty of choices along the Kent coastline, including the popular dog walkers’ beach, Dumpton Gap. The owners, Trevor and Jean Webb, are happy to ac c accept children and dogs — and we ca a came loaded with both! Jean cooks and is a trusted source of local information and tourist advice — the couple have owned the Hanson for over 30 years. The traditional evening meals reminded me of Sunday roasts as a child. The hotel decoration is what I’d call typically Broadstairs. It’s a bit dated, but in the quaint sense that takes you out of your own world and into a simpler and more traditional way of life. The bed was comfortable and even though we were a bit tight for space in the room (with a cot plus Giant Schnauzer), for a ‘normal’ couple and their dog, there is everything you need.

My only criticisms from a dog-friendly point of view were that as the entrance was upstairs, and there was no enclosed garden, toileting involved going down the steps outside (slippery if wet) with Digby on a lead. I wanted to make sure I could clean up after him, there were other animals around and I didn’t want him wandering off to investigate! Also, the carpet is heavily textured sisal, making accidents hard to clear up. f I had to describe our stay I could do it in one word — perfect. I had just retired and was getting used to an easier pace of life and Emma was getting used to having me around more. It was time for some quality time together and everyone made us both very welcome from the time we arrived. The building has an interesting history. It is believed to have been built around 1530 during the reign of Henry VIII for a woman of local importance. The level of craftsmanship signifies an extremely wealthy family. By 1844 the house was known as the Rookery, home of the Bevan family who helped to found Barclays Bank. Since it became a hotel, famous guests have included Peter O’Toole, Ian Lavender, Alexandra Burke, and The Hairy Bikers. The grounds are lovely and lead to woodland with excellent free running, which Emma loved. There is a croquet lawn, goats, and geese, plus an

outdoor swimming pool with a terrace — ideal for afternoon tea. Experienced riders can borrow the hotel’s horses; the inexperienced can visit a local stable. Golf is available at a nearby club and shooting, fishing and other pursuits arranged with reception, which had lots of ideas for visits. There are 14 rooms, seven themed and seven in the Mews, particularly popular with dog owners, as the rooms are on the ground floor with direct access to the gardens. Ours was beautiful, with a four-poster bed and ensuite bathroom with toiletries, bath robe, slippers, and the thickest, fluffiest, whitest towels I have ever seen. Emma loved sitting on the railed balcony to watch the world go by and was fascinated by the rabbits running around the grounds. The food was exquisite. I ate in an area in the bar where you can keep your dog with you — I don’t think Emma would have taken kindly to being left in the room. She was allowed in all areas of the hotel, which has its own two Labradors, except the main dining room. Water bowls are provided in the grounds, but the hotel doesn’t believe

There were too many walks for one short break, most nearby, but Holkham beach and Wells-next-the-Sea are only a short car journey away. Our favourite was at Thetford Forest, about a 20-mile drive. There were many routes to take and Archie could go off-lead. The only place he wasn’t allowed was the café. Archie was treated as a guest — not just a guest’s dog — the atmosphere was friendly and informal. It was easy to forget we were staying at a B&B and not with friends. The Holkham s Estate, of which The Cuckoo Lodge is a part, has several holiday lodges and cottages (plus a four-star holiday park).). On arrival at the main reception of the Victoria hotel, we were given a warm welcome, a comprehensive information pack, a map to find our accommodation, and keys for the gates to the estate grounds. A scenic drive through the estate, encountering herds of free-roaming deer and cattle, eventually took us along a wooded bumpy dirt track to our destination. The Cuckoo Lodge was originally a gamekeeper’s cottage and is in quite a secluded area. You won’t find any immediate neighbours or street lighting. Energy comes from a generator at the flick of a switch. We soon had logs roaring on the fire (it was January!) although electric heaters were supplied. Dog beds, water/food bowls, dog treats, and a towel for muddy paws were all provided for Meg and Milly.

Great food at the Victoria Hotel.

The Cuckoo Lodge has one double and one twin room, a handmade wooden kitchen, open-plan sitting room, dining room, and extensive garden. There are activities including golf, birdwatching, and seal trips locally. The cottage is well equipped and exceptionally cosy, with some lovely touches and features. This was a self-catering break, but breakfast ingredients were provided. A hearty meal cooked on the Aga with sausage, bacon, egg, mushrooms (all local), tomatoes, toast, and cereals started the day. We set off for sandy Holkham Beach (part of the Holkham National Nature Reserve) along a pine wooded walkway with poo bins en route. Meg and Milly thoroughly enjoyed running, chasing, digging, and even a paddle in the sea, although it was too cold for a swim! The unspoilt beach attracts many wading birds (ducks, plovers, avocet) and the Milly investigates endangered Hen Harrier and at Holkham beach. Marsh Harrier breed in the area. We also enjoyed several well-signposted walks around the estate, of varying lengths. It was lovely to retreat back to Cuckoo Lodge and relax in its idyllic location. While dogs are allowed in, we left ours in the warmth of the cottage. The Victoria’s AA two rosette restaurant offers an innovative menu, featuring wild game and beef from the estate, and seafood such as Thornham oysters from the local coast. The food was excellent and reasonably priced. Cuckoo Lodge was perfect for us — and, equally importantly, for the dogs. We felt totally at ease and so did they, although dogs must be on leads on the estate at all times.

Poppy loves long walks on the sand.

Sea views and sunsets Period piece with coastal walks. he Beach House is a huge grade three Edwardian property in beautiful North Norfolk. Big enough to accommodate a large family and dogs, the accommodation is spacious with comfortable sleeping and seating for six. There’s a gorgeous summer house in the garden that includes beds suitable for children, so in the nice weather they could even camp out there. There’s a barbecue outside with garden furniture and I imagine in good weather you wouldn’t need to leave the area — it’s the perfect base for a week at the beach. Our favourite part of the house was the real log burner, a welcome feature on a chilly winter’s evening! There are three bedrooms: a double, a twin, and a room with bunk beds. The table in the kitchen seats six and the kitchen is fully fitted with everything you would expect and possibly need for a week away. A lovely balcony leads from the main bedroom, perfect for having your breakfast, and the outside furniture is fantastic.

T

Come on then — look at all this running space!

There were treats and leads for Poppy, even some food in case we ran out or forgot to bring any. The large enclosed garden has a hosepipe so dogs can get washed off on muddy days and doggy towels are provided. You will need to take your dog’s bedding as dogs are not encouraged to sleep on the furniture. The owner provides information on the house, the area and local amenities — this includes a list of dog-friendly pubs and places to eat. The house is situated in a lovely area for exploring North Norfolk and is perfect for the beach. Poppy loves long walks on the sand and doesn’t care if the weather is raining or sunny. Thornham is about an hour’s walk away and well worth the exercise,

Pride of the Peaks A relaxed hotel where e e.. dogs can feel at home. he hotel’s relaxed atmosphere was reflected in the dogs who were staying there — all calm, chilled, and enjoying their holidays! Dogs can sleep on owners’ beds and be left unattended in the rooms. Cleaning products are provided for ‘accidents’ and if your dog gets really muddy, there is a hosepipe to rinse him off before going back to your room. Our bedroom was beautifully furnished with an array of refreshments. There was plenty of room for Meg’s bed, although the hotel is happy for dogs to be loose in bedrooms. The chalet was even equipped with binoculars, giving us the opportunity to watch the great variety of birds from the panoramic windows. This area is very peaceful and quiet, even the road to Carrick Castle, which is a dead end single track road with passing places. We had very wet weather during our stay, which was unfortunate, but not unexpected in this part of Scotland. The grounds are not lit at night, nor was there an outside light on the chalet. I think this break would suit adults with one or two dogs, or adults with older children, but would not be suitable for wheelchair users.

Looking to Ardnadave in the distance.

Rob Roy country Escape to a cosy cabin, woods and wildlife. wners of Ardoch Lodge and the three holiday properties situated within its 12 acres, John and Yvonne Howes are used to holidaying with dogs and are acutely aware of what makes dogs and owners feel at ease away from home — so really do say ‘pets welcome’ without fuss or strict guidelines. There are two log cabins and a cottage next to the lodge house. Each sleeps up to four in two bedrooms. d Prices include electricity, bed linen, and towels. Being almost 20 years old, our cabin was a bit tired in places, but well equipped and comfortable. There are plenty of walks on the doorstep, not least in Ardoch’s grounds, with a wooded area, walled garden, and water meadow teeming with wildlife and wildflowers. On our first morning, I opened the curtains to see three jays flying through the woods and a red squirrel scampering up a tree. The mountain scenery is spectacular and the River Balvaig forms one of the property’s boundaries. The ground was still covered in snow, which Gaea loved frolicking in and, as it was so quiet and peaceful, we eh ad ffull ulll us u u e off tthe h g he gro roun ro un nd She had use grounds.

Ardoch has achieved the silver standard under the Green Tourism Business Scheme and encourages good environmental practice by providing recycling facilities and encouraging wildlife habitats. Ardoch is definitely dog friendly and very relaxed about four-legged guests and Yvonne made sure we had everything we needed. Gone fishin’ Secluded getaway on a working farm. rossfield Cottages and the Barley Mow provide peaceful self-catering accommodation on a tucked-away working farm. We visited in lambing season, so there were lots of sweet little newborns frolicking near the driveway and we had to be careful not to let the dogs disturb them. The farm also has a llama called Charles, a few cattle, an Exmoor pony, and a working sheepdog. The accommodation is basic but comfortable and practical for dogs and owners who have been tramping around fields all day. There are plenty of mats across the carpeted areas and a washable surface on the kitchen floor, plus Sue offered to provide covers for the furniture if we wanted to allow the dogs on the sofa and chairs. Dogs are allowed everywhere inside, but for obvious reasons there are some restrictions on where to walk them. For their own safety, dogs must be on a lead around the deep fishing lake, on the gravelled driveway, and near sheep fiel e ds el s. More like a hotel than a B&B.

Praise be! Thank heavens that luxury and dogs CAN mix. rom the moment we arrived, we were all — especially the dogs — made very welcome, with lots of fuss and attention over a cup of tea in the sitting room. Liana Moore, a member of the family that owns and runs the B&B, told us all about the area, its dog-friendly eating places, and spectacular walks. This is more like a hotel with a cosy sitting room, conservatory, large outdoor patio with seating, swimming pool, sauna, and hot-tub for guests’ use. My heart sank when I saw the lovely cream-coloured carpets and upholstery in our gorgeous room and imagined what eight muddy paws might do to it. But they proved much more robust than feared, and I don’t think we left a mark despite Oskar’s love of filthy puddles! Rooms vary and are priced accordingly, but even the smallest has plenty of room for dog beds. Dogs are allowed anywhere except in the dining room at breakfast, although a table can be set up for you in the conservatory. Most guests leave their dogs in the car for half an hour while they eat. We stayed in The Granary, which can sleep up to six. All bedrooms are fully carpeted and the rest of the property has slate floors and traditional wooden beams. The large open-plan living space has arched windows with a lovely view of the bay. The kitchen has access to the garden and is modern and fully equipped, but no supplies were included for ourselves or the dogs. Although centrally heated, it was quite cold until we could light the log-burning stove. We had to buy fuel from a local convenience store, along with basics like washing up liquid and soap.

W

The living space was open plan and modern.

The dogs were allowed everywhere but the bedrooms. They sleep with us at home and didn’t like being locked out! We were allowed to leave them alone in the cottage for up to an hour, just long enough for a quick shopping trip. There are nine self-catering cottages accommodating between two and eight, each with its own garden. Ours was a suitable size and fully fenced, but both dogs managed to get through the squares in the wire, so couldn’t be left outside. The private beach was a short stroll past the other cottages and down a track. It is mainly rock and shingle with sandy patches. When the tide recedes, you can access the beach from the track past the Millhouse stream and there are benches at the top of the cliff to enjoy the stunning views. One way you are looking out over the sea, the other you can enjoy the beautiful mountains of Snowdonia. You can walk down the slope on to the beach and follow it round to a set of stairs which lead up to the paddock behind the cottages. The weather was lovely and we had a fantastic beach walk. The dogs loved it and it was safe enough to allow them off-lead. Maisie loves to run and was tearing up and down chasing seagulls and following smells. Even Oscar, normally quite sedentary, found

It has two cottages and two flats, all of which are dog friendly. The largest number of dogs to have stayed in one of the propertiess h before is four, but this is negotiable with the owner. We stayed quite happily in The Mews, which is the smallest cottage; with our two dogs it was a perfect size for the four of us. It has a double bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, and living room with room for a fold-out single bed, and an enclosed, walled garden. You need to take your own bedding and towels. The property has a fascinating history and is full of character, much like its owner Gilbert, who has a wealth of knowledge on the area (and firecraft, as you will find out if you use the open fire!). Glorious Gower Dogs were born to run on this picturesque peninsular. s we pulled into Oldwalls, with its stunning views of open countryside, we were greeted by the five resident Labradors, all barking and wagging tails. When my four greeted them back, my car looked more like a rocking horse! I always do a quick check before taking the dogs inside. Do I need to make it Rupert-proof? Place covers on floors or furniture? Is the garden area safe? Are there any livestock? I was stunned — it was beautiful. All the floors were tiled and there was a dog cushion with two towels. I was in a truly dog-friendly place! The cottages are spacious with

two ensuite double bedrooms, lounge with two corner sofas, plasma TV and WiFi, a spacious kitchen, and private enclosed garden with patio and barbecue, overlooking a running stream. Oldwalls has a private tennis court, fishing lake, and livery facilities. A spa and pool opens later this year. We took a short drive to Broughton Bay, heading toward Burry Holms and on to Rhossili Bay. The views were breathtaking, with hardly a soul around. Once over the dunes, Rupert couldn’t believe his eyes. His little legs couldn’t get him to the sea fast enough. Ella and Phizz soon joined him, but Measles preferred to stay knee deep! Oldwalls owners Andrew Hole and brother Simon were brimming with information on the Gower — 19 miles long with 34 miles of coastline, 83 ancient monuments, 67 ancient woodlands, and six nature reserves. It was the UK’s first Area of Outstanding Beauty. Nine of its 13 beaches are dog friendly all year.

The full breakfast was cooked by Andrew and Simon and served with views of blue sky and the trees reflecting in one of the three lakes. Up the hill was Arthur’s Stone, where you make a wish and kiss the stone to make it come true. The dogs were off-lead running and playing, and you could see for miles from the top. We drove around the coastline ending at Port Eynon Bay. It was fabulous to see so many deserted, clean sandy beaches; you really feel welcome with your dogs. Before we left, we just had to book to go again!

Motorhomes

So where shall we go today?

The ramp made it easy to board.

Fact fileoperty: N/A.

On the move... Specially adapted motorhome makes your dog king of the road. lla and I had many great holidays in our own motorhome in her early years, but when budget considerations meant we could no longer keep it, we tried camping before turning to dog-friendly B&Bs. Although always made welcome, we missed the freedom of being on the road. Thanks to an enterprising Sheffield businessman, we recently relived those days. We discovered Bark n Ride, which has specially adapted vehicles for dog

owners, similarly priced to a B&B break for two. What was to be elderly Ella’s final holiday really did have wheels. We were handed a welcome pack (including dog biscuits and water) and found plenty of storage space in our motorhome. It was double-glazed and heated, and the non-slip floor was a boon. It was easy for Ella to board, with a removable ramp for her tired old legs. I stored her chariot (a special dog pushchair) alongside the comfy bed in her room with a view. She soon realised she needn’t even move for dinner and drinks — two inset dishes being positioned nearby! She even had her own shower outside for washing down after muddy walks. We had enough equipment to cook a dinner party for six, either inside or on one of the disposable barbecues. If warmer, we could have entertained

under our integral canopy — easily wound out from the body of the van. Although an experienced motorhome driver, I was reassured by the detailed hand over and beginners should have no fear. I programmed the optional sat-nav for a tour of Derbyshire, Chester, and North Wales and we were off! On our return, Bark n Ride had even washed our car! Sadly, Ella lost her 18-month battle with epilepsy only two days later. Having never taken a winter break, it enabled her to live life to the full, right to the very end.

Cider country Luxury for us, fun for the dogs. he Old Farm is nestled in an idyllic south-facing valley, just one hour away from Bristol and convenient for local attractions. The self-catering accommodation comprises three timber framed ex-cider barns, all named after local cider apples. We stayed in Eggleston Styre and first impressions were good; there is ample parking and Liza the owner provided a warm welcome, with fresh flowers, milk, and free-range eggs. Dog towels are provided, plus chews, bowls, and toys. Crates are available on request. Dogs are allowed anywhere, but we were asked for a £50 returnable cash deposit in case they caused damage. Eggleston Styre is quaint, clean, and charming. It has central heating and a wood burner effect gas fire in the comfy sitting room. Highlights include a four-poster bed in the ground floor master bedroom, and an ensuite with steam sauna. The bedroom opens on to an enclosed patio — perfect for dogs. There are two more bedrooms upstairs, plus a whirlpool bath.

The visitors’ book reveals many wonderful walks for owners and dogs. Liza was incredibly helpful, with plenty of ideas of where we could go, and poo bags provided. A real boon was a dog-sitting service offered at £1 per hour or kennelling at £5 per day. We walked the dogs up May Hill, behind the cottages. It’s not for the faint-hearted, with a summit of 296m (971ft) above sea level, but the views are amazing — on a clear day you can see the Welsh borders. Apparently there are wild ponies in the area, but we only saw hoof prints. Rick had to carry Oscar over several stiles, although Coco was small enough to climb underneath most. There is an alternative route, which would be better for anyone with large dogs. Luxury in the master bedroom.

We breakfasted on the eggs Liza provided and set off to explore the Forest of Dean. Beechenhurt Lodge, on the site of the former Speech House Colliery, has fantastic trails, a café, and an adventure playground. We walked the four-and-a-half mile sculpture trail, which took about two hours, but shortcuts are available. We were warned to look out for wild boar! The sculptures made interesting viewing, culminating in a beautiful stained glass window, dangling above the tall trees. At the end, Maddie and I enjoyed Melissa’s Swing, literally a sculpure to swing on and listen to the tinkling metal effect combined with the natural forest sounds. The dogs loved exploring, sniffing new smells, and Oscar even swam in one of the lakes. Symond’s Yat Rock is the site of an Iron Age fort and well worth a visit. We were impressed that it is wheelchair-friendly. From the top you can see cliffs, the nesting place of peregrine falcons that soar above the River Wye valley 120m below. The Old Farm is a perfect place to stay with dogs and we’ll definitely be back!

The breakfast room is pleasantly decorated and separated from the kitchen by a breakfast bar and archway. Everywhere is very clean and tidy. Breakfast is fabulous, all made from the best quality ingredients and cooked to your liking. The choice is huge, even pancakes and maple syrup!
