lanning your holiday can be an exciting if daunting task, especially if your dog is coming along too. You want your time away to be relaxing and carefree, not spent worrying if your pet is really supposed to be where he is. And this applies to the places you’re visiting as well as the accommodation you’re staying in. So, for the third issue of Your Dog Magazine’s annual ‘Where to stay’ guide, we’ve not only included dog-friendly places to stay but suggested places to visit too. The guide is split up into different regions of the UK with dog-friendly activities, walks and beaches listed before places to stay. Accommodation has been visited and proprietors thoroughly questioned about the dog-friendliness of their property, whether it’s selfcatering, a bed and breakfast, hotel or even something a little different, for example the narrow boat break featured on page 56. We’ve also tried to highlight as many different types of accommodation as possible so that there are those to suit the multi-dog owner, the less mobile, single people, families and those without a car, across a variety of budgets. Unfortunately it’s impossible to include everywhere, so if you know of any special places to stay or visit with your dog, please let us know and we’ll try to include them next year. Don’t forget that you can share your holidaying experiences and search for dog-friendly accommodation at www.yourdog.co.uk

HOLIDAY PLANNING

Be sure of your recall before letting your dog of the lead.

Ready to stay away? any people choose to holiday in the UK so that their family pet can accompany them and there’s no better way to enjoy Britain’s countryside than with your dog by your side. There are many places to visit which are dog-friendly but with a little forethought your holiday will go even more smoothly.

M

With a little forethought your dog-friendly holiday can be the best you’ve ever had.

Accommodation Having somewhere clean and comfy to retreat to can make all the difference to a holiday, especially when the weather is poor. Check with accommodation proprietors exactly where they are happy for your dog to go within their properties.

Cost Don’t just expect your dog to stay for free. Some properties charge due to the extra cleaning costs associated with dogs. Ask before you book and whether an additional deposit is required.

Packing Remember that your dog will need his bowls, bedding, lead, collar and food while you are away. You can usually borrow anything that you have forgotten but dogs may not settle on unfamiliar bedding and it’s not wise to make sudden changes to your pet’s diet, if you are unable to buy his regular food in the area in which you are staying. You may also want to have a collar tag made showing the details of where you will be staying. Don’t forget to pack a supply of old blankets and towels to cover furniture and to dry muddy paws. A compact water bowl might also be a wise investment so that you can give your dog a drink on the way and while enjoying days out.

From the sponsors of ‘Where to Stay’

D

rontal advises all dog owners to be responsible while out and about with their pets and vigilant against the threat of intestinal worms. They say: ✱ Only Drontal kills every type of intestinal worm commonly found on dogs in the UK. ✱ Drontal kills the hookworm which has been found in up to 68 per cent of UK foxes. ✱ Drontal contains praziquantel, the only tapeworm treatment ingredient allowed for the Pet Travel Scheme (PETS) certification. Necessary if you are travelling in PETS approved countries abroad. ✱ Drontal recommend you keep dogs on leads where sheep may be present as dogs can pick up tapeworm from grazing animals, for example if they scavenge on a carcass.

Prepare your dog for your holiday together.

Before you go Check your dog’s insurance details before travelling in case of damage to hotel rooms etc. Carry a copy with you in case you need to contact your provider while you are away. If your dog needs regular medication make sure you have enough. Speak to your local vet about contacting a vet in the area you will be visiting. Make sure your dog’s routine worming programme and flea treatments are up to date. This will ensure your pet is protected while you are away and lessen the risk of him picking up worms or fleas.

Walk this way>>

A

s soon as you arrive at your destination take your dog for a toileting stop. It’s probably best not to let him off the lead as he’ll be unfamiliar with his surroundings. Then settle him before you unpack. Don’t forget he needs to wear a collar and tag with your contact details while out and about. Your accommodation will no doubt be able to give you advice on suitable places to walk locally, but remember to follow the Countryside Code. It’s worth remembering that you should: ✱Prevent your dog from disturbing or scaring wildlife. If in doubt keep your dog on a lead as there could be young animals or ground-nesting birds around. ✱Never allow your dog to chase livestock. Not only is this terrifying for the animals but could also have serious consequences. ✱Leave gates as you found them. Stiles can be difficult for some dogs to manage but many are being replaced with gates under the Disability Discrimination Act. ✱Don’t let your dog hunt rabbits or scavenge as this will increase their risk of picking up worms. ✱Check your dog over thoroughly on your return from walks. Look for cuts, ticks and grass seeds in ear and paw hair. ✱The website www.nationaltrail.co.uk will help you search for walks to try while you are away.

Scoop the poop>> R

egulations vary throughout the country on dog waste and the use of poo bags. In some open countryside locations the policy is to stick and flick – ie use a stick to kick mess off paths but in most places it’s required to bag dog waste and use the bins provided. Do not leave bags hanging on fences and gates as these are a hazard to wildlife and livestock amongst others, as well as dogs due to the risk of worm infection. Many people assume that it’s acceptable to leave dog waste on dog-friendly beaches. This is rarely the case and can lead to beaches being closed to dogs in the future.

Top travel tips>> 1 2 3 4

Avoid feeding your dog just before you set off. Keep your dog restrained in the car at all times, either using a carrier, harness or dog guard. Take a cleaning kit in case of accident. Give your dog access to fresh drinking water and allow for regular toilet breaks and leg stretches out of the car. NEVER let your dog out on the hard shoulder of the motorway. Try to travel early in the morning or late in the evening to avoid the warmest part of the day. Check that your breakdown service allow dogs in their recovery vehicles. If travelling by train, check the operator’s policy on travelling with dogs. It’s common to notify them on ticket purchase and be prepared to change seats if other travellers take exception. Consider the use of a herbal remedy to help your dog relax on the journey, if he is a nervous traveller.

WALES

The wonder of Wales Wonderful walking and breathtaking views — you’ll find them both.

The Pembrokeshire coastline is a beautiful place to walk.

early 20 per cent of Wales is under the care of its three National Parks. This means there’s plenty of walking and space for dog owners. The National Park status has the added benefit of also making the areas accessible with well-maintained routes.

N

Snowdonia The mountainous region within the Snowdonia National Park is probably the most famous Welsh tourist area. There are varying levels of walks from easy to strenuous. The routes up to the summit of Snowdon are probably the most trodden, although the terrain

is testing in parts. For the less adventurous, there are numerous other walks with helpful tourist information points throughout the park.

Pembrokeshire The Pembrokeshire Coast National Park offers some spectacular coastal scenery. If you want more rugged / remote then go for the north coast, while the south coast has the most beaches and more services. The west coast falls somewhere in the middle. According to the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority 207km of the off road Pembrokeshire Coast Path

are now accessible to dogs. There are 75 stiles across the whole path (28 of which incorporate ‘dog gates’), down from 530 stiles in 1993. The authority has details of the various routes that are most suited to dogs (including the places where stock are grazing at any time). Visit the FAQ section of the website http://nt.pcnpa.org.uk and click on the ‘dogs’ section. Visitors are reminded to be respectable of wildlife and keep dogs on lead if necessary.

Brecon Beacons The characteristic bare grassy moorland terrain

and occasional woodland make up the area. The Brecon Beacons National Park contains four distinct upland areas, the Brecon Beacons, Fforest fawr and (confusingly) the Black Mountains and the Black Mountain. Much of the area is grazed by Welsh Mountain ponies and sheep. The southern edge of the park is ‘waterfall country’. While walking in this area has its problems (steep, narrow, slippery paths down sheer gorges) and may not suit every dog and owner, those who venture here will see some superb views, like that of Henrhyd Waterfalls.

Guests are reminded to clear up after their dogs. At Dan y Cefn there is a well presented

Unless visiting from overseas, towels are

Walk on the wild side The cliffs of Mull.

Scotland is a country of contrasts with a stunning coastline, open mountains and seemingly endless forests. overing an area of around 30,420 square miles, Scotland is one of the most beautiful and unspoilt areas of Britain. The country is also one of great contrast, with vibrant cities, a stunning coastline, acres of heatherclad moorland and hundreds of mountains and munros, aside from Robert Burns, golf, tartan and Bonny Prince Charlie! People can be forgiven for immediately conjuring up images of the Highlands, but there’s so much more to the country than the Cairngorms National Park. The Grampians, the Angus Glens and the forests of Galloway are also a walker’s paradise and mountain biker’s playground. Then there are the spectacular island groups off the coastline, each with a distinct character. The cities of Edinburgh and Glasgow attract shoppers and those interested in the arts. And then there are the championship golf courses of Arran. sug To suggest the best destinations to visit v with your dog for each to of the regions in Scotland o wo ou take up more space would th han is permitted here — so than in nst instead you’ll find some of th he best regional attractions the clo to the accommodation close revvie reviewed on pages 22-25.

The Borders ‘The gateway to Scotland’, this area is a patchwork of hills and farmland in the east and moorland in the west, spattered with castles, abbeys and stately homes. The Tweed cuts through the area and can be easily enjoyed from the Southern Upland Way. The website www.visittweedvalley. co.uk lists many walking routes, rated by difficulty of terrain. There’s also the Borders Abbeys Way, a 64-mile route which takes in the ruined abbeys of Jedburgh and Melrose amongst others.

Within the park is also the UK’s first Dark Skies Park. You’ll find more details about this status and the sites where viewing is best on the Forestry Commission website. On the coast is the Solway Firth, which sees thousands of migrating birds pass through each year. While Dumfries town is known as the place where Robert Burns spent his later years. The Scottish access code Scotland operates an open access code to most land and inland water. Specific advice for dog owners includes: Do not take dogs into fields where there are lambs, calves or other young animals. Do not take dogs into a field of vegetables (unless you are on a clear path). Keep your dog on a short lead or under control around cows, horses and sheep. Located in 60 acres, home to 18 organic Highland cattle (some have appeared in films!), two ponies, three chickens, nine sheep, three cats and several dogs, Ae Farm Cottages is a perfect destination for the active family and dog. Having their own family, David and Gillian have made sure the three cottages, sleeping between four and eight, are easy to maintain for guests exhausted after a day’s activities outside. Two of the cottages have underfloor stone heating while the Hay Loft and Shepherd’s both have wood burning stoves, there’s always an old towel for cleaning paws and a laundry/ drying room is available on site. There’s a pressure washer outside; really for hosing down mountain bikes but great for thoroughly washing muddy dog kit and boots. There’s no maximum number of dogs — the most accommodated is 12 dogs in a four bed cottage — and as David points out: “we don’t

mind as long as the dogs don’t disturb anyone else.” Ae Farm Cottages are operated in as an environmentally-friendly way as possible, they are thoroughly insulated, have solar panels and recycling is implemented. Part of this policy includes less use of plastic bags so instead of poo bags littering the area, guests are requested to borrow a shovel and throw their dog’s messes into the hedgerows. A local map is provided of Ae Forest and the surrounding Southern Upland Way. Apart from some stunning scenery and wildlife — red squirrels, roe deer, woodpeckers, goshawks and jay, Ae is renowned for its mountain biking. Off-lead exercise is straight out the door (although there’s no totally secure area for dog-toileting), across the track and through the field which backs onto the forest. During summer the family’s ponies are turned out in this field but they are very dog-friendly. There’s also a large pond which the family’s collie loves swimming in. It’s worth noting that it’s very dark at night in this area of Scotland, although torches are to hand in all the cottages, it’s advised to keep dogs on the lead until they get used to the area and the endless open space it offers.

David will happily introduce guests to the Highland cattle.

The family’s ponies are very friendly.

CORNWALL LL LL

Just the ticket The quintessential south-west holidaying county, Cornwall has many dog-friendly places to visit. ornwall’s location means that 80 per cent of the county is coastal providing visitors (and their dogs) with miles of beaches and coastal pathways to explore. The South West Coastal Path runs from Minehead to the edge of the Exmoor National Park and to Poole Harbour in Dorset. Dogs are welcome on the path, although care should be taken near cliff edges and in areas where livestock is grazing. While the chances of encountering ‘the beast of Bodmin’ might be slim, the moor remains a fascinating place to visit. This small area of granite moorland has remained relatively unchanged since it was first farmed 4,000 years ago. The Forestry Commission’s Cardinham Woods has several walks and the Woods Café has facilities for dogs. Cornwall boasts an industrial heritage too, with tin and copper mines littering the landscape. Remember to savour one of the most well known legacies of this and enjoy a traditional Cornish pasty!

ituated just off the A390, Bosinver Farm is perfect for family holidays. Guests of the 19 properties (11 of which accept dogs) also have access to a games room, swimming pool and tennis court. There are farm animals for families to meet, including Chalky the pigmy goat. The cottages have been carefully sited around woodland planting so that properties are not overlooked. Guests are requested not to leave dogs unattended in cottages but there is a kennel available for temporary use. Dogs should be kept on-lead around the landscaped area near the cottages, as this is home to a flock of free range chickens. An outside hose is available for washing off dogs. A supply of dog toys and bowls is available in the main reception for guests who have forgotten to pack these items, but guests should bring their own dog towels and bedding. Bosinver Farm boasts around 30 acres of woods and fields, with ponds, where dogs can be exercised off lead. A footpath leads out from the site to the local village of Poolgooth – perfect for a morning dog walk to fetch milk and newspapers.

elightfully dogfriendly! These six cottages are modestly yet comfortably furnished and each has its own quirky characteristics. Toad Hall is an inverted cottage with the living area, dining table and kitchen on the first floor, and bedrooms downstairs. Swallows, so named because of the birds that once visited the barn, is on three floors; the living area on the ground floor then two bedrooms, one in the basement and another on the first floor. Animal-loving owner Sue has paid particular attention to the facilities required by dog owners. Throws

A separate poo bin can be found at the recycling point. Guests can enjoy walks to the woods and river, with the Forestry Commission, Cardinham Woods and Bodmin Moor all nearby. Guests can leave dogs in the properties, if they are settled, and a dog crèche is available for hire.

ornwall Holiday Cottages are located in a farmyard setting with a private drive and electric gate. The site, which also accommodates caravans, backs onto Bodmin Moor, with views out towards Dartmoor and plenty of walking locally. The three cottages, sleeping between two and six, have been tastefully renovated with plentiful facilities. While there are not private gardens attached to each cottage, there is a large communal securely fenced area. Owner Ray also has fields, which, when not occupied by his ponies, can be used for toileting. A poo bin is available as is an outside tap. Owners Ray and Pearl have dogs, including a Giant Schnauzer who has been successfully shown. They enjoy exploring the area, particularly the beaches and are happy to point guests in the right direction. There’s a comprehensive walk folder in each of the properties. Dogs are not allowed in the bedrooms. Kennels are available should guests need to leave their dogs in the day. The Cheesewring Stones stand behind the farm, which is also located just 20 minutes drive from the year-round dogfriendly Damar Bay on the north Cornwall coast.

uests of Helsbury Park – winner of the Kennel Club’s Open for Dogs Award ‘Somewhere to Stay 2009’ – are in for a treat. The four cottages; Marhayes, Westhayes and the Farmhouse (sleeping six) and Broadview Cottage (sleeping five) are all lavishly furnished, with spacious living areas and underfloor heating. All the bedrooms in Marhayes and Westhayes have en suite facilities. Cottage views are of the 100 acre ‘garden’ and duck pond with floating house. Doggy welcome packs g include treats, dog

soap, throws for the sofas and towels for dirty paws. Dog bowls can be found in the kitchen, leads are available and a travel bowl will be found in each of the cottages for day trips. Stairs are fitted with permanent gates and owner Dave asks guests to discourage dogs from going upstairs. A large kennel with outside dog run accompanies each property – which would comfortably sleep three dogs. It’s often used while guests enjoy the swimming pool, gym and sauna.

Both the south and north Cornish coasts are close by too (about 35 minutes drive). The cottages; Henwood Barn, sleeping five, Small Barn, sleeping five and Mole Cottage, sleeping two are fitted with all the necessary items for a comfortable stay. The cottages are sited in the middle of Henwood village, with a gate onto the road making the shared courtyard and small communal garden secure. This area may be used for toileting as long as guests clear up after their dog. There are several footpaths nearby. Guests are advised to bring a stairgate as dogs are not allowed upstairs and there are not doors limiting access to stairs in every cottage. Walking information is available in the cottages although Schnauzer owner David can advise of the best attractions and beaches to visit.

n the outskirts of St Austell, Kernow Homes luxury holiday apartments (sleeping from three to six) are located within the recently completed residential development, Pochin House. Boasting a high quality finish, the five single-level apartments on different floors are all accessed by one central corridor and stairwell. There’s also an information point in this central hallway, with leaflets on local tourist attractions. Each property has one allocated car parking space.

While there is limited provision for dog toileting immediately outside the complex, there are various walks in the vicinity; Kernow Homes are just five minutes from Mill Park and ten minutes from the start of the Clay Trails. Local beaches have differing rules for dog owners depending on the time of the year. St Austell train station is just a couple of miles away, so those without their own transport would find this destination an ideal place to stay where they could enjoy and explore the rest of this lovely area.

et around a shared courtyard the five Talehay Cottages are well presented. Lodge Cottage is self-contained with a kitchen, living area and double bed in one area, and a separate bathroom. The Stables, meanwhile, is more spacious and suited to a family, sleeping four or five plus a cot. Dogs are allowed throughout the properties although throws should be brought along by guests to protect furniture, but can be borrowed if needed. The owners, Theresa and Neil, can help with walks advice as they have two dogs. The village of Pelynt is

about 20 minutes away via footpaths, and has shops, a pub and a butcher. Talehay is also just two miles from the coast and many of the bays in the area are dog-friendly; details of the best dog friendly beaches, many of which have been tested by Neil and Theresa, can be found in the cottage information book. There are also further walking guides and tourist information in the porch of their farmhouse. Talehay can also boast its own local dog sitter – just one minute up the road at Pelynt Boarding Kennels and Cattery.

et on a working farm, which has beef cattle and breeding ewes, this farmhouse bed and breakfast, with three self-catering cottages, is a rural retreat. The Victorian farmhouse rooms are spacious, three are en suite while the fourth has its own private bathroom. Guest dogs are allowed in the bedrooms and communal lounge area, but not on the beds. The owner requests that dogs be fed in the bathrooms as this floor is easier to clean. Quiet dogs may stay in the room while guests take their breakfast. Each room has a fridge where wet dog food may be stored. The three self-catering cottages have their own dedicated parking space

close to each property which also have their own private gardens. Two of the properties have an entrance porch; ideal for drying dogs. Chy-Un-Lur cottage is the most recently opened cottage and has two en suite bedrooms, a double and a single (the single en suite is a wet room), and is ideal for wheelchair users or those with limited mobility. There are also kennels which may be used for a short while by guests with dogs but as there is no outdoor run would not be suitable for more than just a few hours. In the surrounding area, a footpath cuts through the farm giving countryside views and eventually leading to the coast three miles away.

Dales and moors Yorkshire has the getaway to suit every taste.

oth iconic areas of Yorkshire — the Dales and the North York Moors — are National Parks. In the Dales there are vast stretches of unspoilt, rolling countryside. The view is peppered with dry-stone walls and each of the 20 Dales has an individual charm and personality. The southern Dales are more populated, while the northern Dales retain a rugged, rural charm. Agriculture continues to be an important industry so, if you’re out enjoying walks across the region, be prepared to keep your dog on a short lead at times. Each of the Yorkshire Dales National Park visitor centres welcome dogs inside. The violet heather and deep valleys extend for miles on the North Yorkshire Moors, made famous by the Bronte family and more recently as the backdrop for television and film, including the Harry Potter movies. Over 2,300km of paths and tracks cross the area, including the Cleveland Way which can be explored in short circular sections, some of which are easy access (more information can be found on the National Trail website). Often misspelled, Haworth is famous for its connections with the Bronte family who wrote many of their famous works at Haworth Parsonage. The tiny house is now a museum and dogs are not allowed inside, although there are many walks on the Bronte Way from the village, including those to Bronte Fall and Bronte Bridge. The village is littered with tearooms and souvenir shops.

The visitor centre at Dalby Forest.

County Yorkshire The region’s coast is made up of fishing villages and holiday destinations like Whitby. Popular tourist towns include Scarborough, Filey and Bridlington, although these are sometimes not as dog-friendly as smaller, quieter destinations. The Yorkshire Wolds are a mainly arable farming area of rolling countryside.

English Heritage There are numerous abbeys, castles and priories under English Heritage stewardship across the county,

many of which can be enjoyed with dogs. Scarborough Castle, for example, has views of the town and coastline. Find more at www.english-heritage.org.uk

Stately homes Yorkshire has a number of stately houses many of which have grounds and walks open to dogs. These include Castle Howard, Harewood House, Wentworth Castle Gardens, Ripley Castle and Sledmore House.

he Old Mill Hotel & Restaurant is a bustling nine-bedroomed hotel in a quiet Yorkshire Wolds location. Dogs are allowed throughout the public areas of the hotel, except the formal dining room. If guests want to eat with their dog they can do so in the bar area and there are tables available for this. There’s also a picnic area outside. Dogs can also be left for short periods in the rooms. Entrance is through the tile-floored bar area which gives guests the opportunity to clean off muddy paws before going upstairs to the carpeted rooms. Bedrooms are en suite, clean and comfortable, with televisions and fridges, but floor space is slightly limited so it may be best to opt for the family room if available. Walks are straight from the door, as there is no outside toileting space apart from the car park. The surrounding countryside is mainly arable, with the odd pig farm and Kathie is happy to advise on the best routes to suit individual guests dependent on the type of walk they’d like. EAST ANGLIA

Enjoy the beautiful Broads and stunning Suffolk coast. roads, boating and bountiful scenery; head east and you’ll find it all. Boasting some of the most unique and important landscapes in England, this is an area which is both beautiful and critical to wildlife. Heaths, arable farmland, marshes, coasts, rivers and dunes cover the region. By boat or on foot, the Broads, Britain’s largest protected wetland and the third biggest inland waterway, offers a unique and vital habitat for many different plants, animals and birds. Aside from boating the Broads can be enjoyed along its footpaths. The 35-mile Wherrymans Way cuts through the Southern Broads, following the River Yare between Norwich and Great Yarmouth. See www. wherrymansway.net Access to part or all of the way can be gained using train services or the river bus. There are also ten shorter, circular routes from various villages along the route. Norfolk is an area of coastal erosion. Here many miles of sandy beach are open to dogs all year round. Access, however, may be restricted at certain times of the year as the beaches and sand banks are used by grey seals when whelping (dog-friendly boat tours are available for visitors to view the seal pups). Being mainly arable farmland dog walkers in East Anglia are unlikely to encounter much livestock, although with several stately homes and grounds there are large herds of deer to be seen, both fallow and red, which have escaped from their original parkland habitat. There’s no better way to enjoy the idyllic Suffolk coast and heaths than on foot using parts of the Suffolk Coast Path. Evening walkers may even hear an elusive nightjar. Walks of various distances and further details for owners can be found at www.suffolkcoastandheaths.org

Beaches The general rule for beaches in Norfolk is to go onto the beach from the car park and to turn left if you have a dog. Parish council restrictions vary and are not published until the end of March each year. Holkham Beach, which is privately owned by the Holkham estate, is open to dogs all year round. In Suffolk, beaches can be accessed with dogs year round outside Aldeburgh town; at Gunton Denes near Lowestoft; Southwold Denes and Walberswick amongst others.

For more conservative bitches there’s a grass near the parking area but this is not enclosed. Sturdy doors separate the bedrooms and keep dogs out if guests aren’t so keen on having their pet sleep alongside them. Sue has put together detailed information about the area, which is updated regularly. She’s also included local vets information, and cards to take out with details of vets in the wider area. The Purbeck Way also goes through the area in a westerly direction. The Isle of Wight has its own unique history, scenery and beaches. The size of the island, coupled with the many bus services means that it’s very easy to enjoy without a car. Southern Vectic buses allow dogs to travel on their services around the island for free (find out more at www. islandbuses.info). In Hampshire, The New Forest is a popular

ocated on Swanage High Street, The White Swan Inn offers tastefully furnished accommodation, located on the first floor above the public house. Dogs are welcome in the bar as are non residents’ pets. Manager Tracey has her own Labradoodle, Farley, who’s a ‘regular’. Only the restaurant is out of bounds to dogs but guests can take their meals in the bar. Alternatively, if dogs won’t disturb other guests they can be left in the bedrooms. Guests are asked not to let dogs onto the beds. Outside the beer garden may be used for dog toileting, although there is no grass so a stroll further afield may be preferable.

Footpaths onto the Downs and the South West Coastal Path are close by. Swanage Beach has restrictions on dogs between Easter and October, but Tracey can recommend a three mile walk across the Downs to Worth, where there is a great pub called the Square and Compass which is very dog-friendly.

ettlecombe Farm nestles in the heart of the South Wight countryside, outside the village of Whitwell about half a mile down a quiet lane. The self-catering cottages, farmhouse, barn and stables are maintained to a high standard with comfortable fittings and furnishings. Each has its own small private garden. The position of the farm provides ample walking with many footpaths and lanes in the area. One such path starts from the courtyard where the barn conversions of Swallows, Wren, Heron and Robin (all single story bar Robin) cottages stand. The ten properties sleep between three and ten and are all individually designed, so the layout in each varies. Typically the cottages are open plan with spacious living areas. It is requested dogs are not allowed on the furniture. Nettlecombe Farm has beef cattle and sheep so guests may encounter livestock on walks, although the owner can advise of areas to avoid. Maps are available on request and more details are to be found in welcome packs. Guests visiting during the spring can help bottle-feed lambs and visit the farm’s pet goats. Whitwell village has a petrol station, pub, butcher, general store and chemist.

CUMBRIA C U & THE LAKE DISTRICT TH

asily one of the most beautiful areas of the UK, this predominantly rural county has attracted holiday makers since the Victorian era. The landscape has provided inspiration for artists and writers for generations, most famously William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter, who found inspiration in this ruggedly beautiful countryside. The most famous tourist destination in the region is the Lake District. This National Park provides acres of mountainous countryside and great expanses of water. The highest point in the county (and in England) is Scafell Pike. The summit attracts hordes of energetic and adventurous walkers each year. There are countless tracks and paths around the area, passing many of the 16 lakes and many more tarns along the way. While some routes are more suited to intrepid, fit walkers and their dogs, the Lake District National Park website has a list of 39 open access routes across the park, providing exploratory opportunities for all. The largest natural lake in England, Windermere can be enjoyed in a boat or from the water’s edge. The 45-mile Windermere Way circles the lake and offers fantastic scenery, although some sections of the path run close to the water’s edge while other parts on the road, so close control of dogs may be required. On the water, dogs are welcome on board all four of the Windermere Lake Cruises routes – they also offer a special ‘walkers’ ticket for those wanting to enjoy sections on the Windermere Way.

The Coast While the coast may not be the first thing you think of when visiting Cumbria, its shores offer more than you realise. The industrial past and present of this stretch of the coastline is clear but there are some real jewels along the Cumbrian Coast. Peil Castle on Peil Island is about 3.5miles from Barrow-In-Furness, it’s an English Heritage property and can be accessed via a boat in the summer. The boat is not operated by English Heritage.

Other walks Further walking routes across the area include: More than 50 pre-historic stone The Cumbria Way, monuments (circles) can be found the Dales Way and the across Cumbria. or more than 100 years the National Trust has cared for much of the iconic land of the Lake District. The Trust cares for Grasmere Lake, described by Wordsworth as: ‘The most loveliest spot that man hath found’ and are also responsible for the Fell Foot National Trust Park at Newby Bridge in Windermere, boasting great views of both the Victorian Park and the lake itself. The five-mile stretch of Coniston Water, which staged many attempts to break speed records in the 20th century, offers trips on two steam boats restored by the National Trust and recently converted to run by solar power. ituated in the heart of the Lake District National Park, Cockley Beck Cottage is the perfect retreat for active people and dogs. The self-catering cottage, within the National Trust Estate and close to the Hardknott and Wrynose passes, is located next door to a working fell farm, home to 600 Herdwick sheep, Highland cattle and free range hens (eggs available). Cockley Beck offers modern and comfortable accommodation with spectacular views across the fells. The tile-floored compact kitchen includes all necessary amenities and leads directly into the carpeted living area, furnished with plenty of deep sofas. Dog bedding and covers for furniture

are provided and a crate is available on request. A door splits the downstairs twin bedroom from the living area, while a separate outside staircase leads to a double bedroom upstairs. Doggy guests get their own welcome pack, which includes local vets details, treats, grooming products and poo bags. There’s also a large secure garden for toileting, as well as ample off road parking. The extensive range of walks, directly from the door can be as easy or as invigorating as visitors wish. Maps are available to borrow but Sandra can also advise. She is also happy to dog-sit for guests, which can be of benefit to the older dog who is not able to manage several day’s continuous walking.

ith its edge of town location, The Glen Guest House combines the beauty of the lakes with the practicalities of a more urban stay. Walking distance from Oxenholme – The Lake District Railway, which is located on the West Coast Mainline, the guesthouse is easily accessible from London. The Glen’s eight rooms (two kept allergy free) are spacious and comfortable with plenty of floor space for dog bedding. Pets are not allowed on the beds or furniture. All rooms also have large sitting areas. Unfortunately, room access is through the breakfast area so dogs have to be out of the bedrooms before breakfast is served at 8.15am, most guests choosing to put their dogs

in their cars while they eat. The guesthouse is carpeted throughout although there is a large tarmac car park for cleaning and drying dogs before entry. Most rooms are located upstairs but, if vacant, guests with less mobile dogs can be accommodated in the ground floor disabledaccess bedroom. Other than Kendal town itself, there’s The Helm for dog walking, the start of which is situated 300m down the unpaved, unlit road (torches are available to borrow) near to the entrance to the Station Inn — itself dog-friendly and serving food. The walk is popular with locals and allows some off-lead exercise. The Helm can also be a starting point for longer treks.

Ahoy there! Fancy a dog-friendly holiday with a difference? Try a narrow boat break. PHOTOGRAPHY: MIKE HAYWARD

I

t wasn’t at all what I expected!” Becky Kane, Your Dog magazine Deputy Advertising Manager and resident dog-boating holiday tester said. “But if you want a challenging holiday, on which you can take your dogs then a narrow boat break is worth a try. We loved it and so did the dogs!” Becky took a short break with Kate Boats on the Grand Union Canal from Warwick. An alternative starting point can be made at Stockton. Week long holidays are also available. The luxury narrow boats are fully equipped and have central heating and flush toilets. The four-person crew plus Becky’s two Chinese Crested dogs, Dexter and Henry, gathered at Warwick marina where their cars were left in the secure car park for the duration of their break. The team were then introduced to Jemima, a five-star 4/6 berth

narrow boat boat, and shown how to operate the lights, fill up with water and fuel, as well as how to steer the boat and operate locks. This takes around 30 minutes. A manual is also provided and Becky says that other boaters are very friendly and will help. Enough diesel for the length of your break is included in the cost, but you do have to fill up at marinas.

Things to pack: Non-slip water bowel — to prevent spillages while the boat is moving. Old towels, covers and blankets — the tow paths get muddy so you need to be able to clean dogs and protect furniture. A torch — for safety getting on and off the boat at night. Dog food — you can’t always get to shops easily from the boat and the convenience stores you find may not always stock it.

onto dry land, with no slippery gang plank to worry about. Narrow boats are suitable for small to medium-sized dogs and while Kate Boats are happy for guests to bring as many dogs as they wish to, it’s wise to consider how many and the size of dogs you’re trying to fit in. In terms of crew, Becky advises that while other boaters will help at locks you do need some muscle power! “The holiday was a lot tougher than we expected in terms of operating the locks, although it’s really addictive trying to get as far as you can each day and through as many locks as possible. It took much longer to travel in the narrow boat than we thought it would do. “All the boats have log books where guests have written down the routes they’ve taken and on reading through you want to try and beat them!” To sum up her boating experience Becky says: “Our trip with Kate Boats was dog-friendly but wasn’t a holiday just for dogs. We had fun too.”

Wheels or canvas? Camping and caravanning holidays can also be dog-friendly.

Camping taying under canvas with your dog can be an enjoyable and cheaper holiday option. Campsite policies for dogs vary widely. As well as all your regular dog care equipment there are a few other camp essentials that you will need to think about. You’ll need to consider where you leave your dog while you shower etc, if your car has to be parked away from the tent. A crate may be a useful item as this will provide a safe, secure refuge for your dog. A tethering post may also be useful. Try to find a pitch (if you have not had yours pre-allocated) with plenty of shade and away from toilet blocks or the site shop, as the constant procession of people past your pet may make it difficult for him to settle properly. Remember to keep cooking equipment, such as BBQs and gas stoves, well away from your dog in case of accident. Kim Blythe, Public Relations Executive for the Camping and Caravanning Club, which promotes sites across the country, offers this advice to dog owners camping with their pets: “We welcome dogs and other pets on our Club Sites but it is important they are kept under control at all times. No animal is allowed to be loose on site and must always be on a short lead. Proprietary pet cages are only allowed within the confines of a unit which includes an awning or owner’s vehicle.” You’ll find that many sites like the ones run by the Camping and Caravanning Club will have a designated dog exercise area where they can be allowed to run free off the lead, if there is not one available try to find a local footpath. To book one of Camping and Carvanning Club sites, visit www. campingandcaravanningclub.co.uk

Taking time out on a camping break.

Many caravan sites are dog-friendly but you may want to scout around for quieter sites.

Caravanning C ouring caravans and motorhomes can be a great holiday option for dog owners, especially if you have your own caravan. The Caravan Club has a dog’s welcome policy o on all their sites with no additional charges. Many sites also have sspecified ‘dog walk’ areas. Certain motorhome hire companies may also be worth c considering. Hire company Amber Leisure (www.amberleisure. c co.uk) has made specific alterations to some of their vehicles tto accommodate dogs more comfortably. These include the w widening of galleys to house dog crates and holders for dog b bowls to prevent spillage. The company Bark ‘n’ Ride (www. b barknride.co.uk) also has motorhomes with especially adapted ffacilities for dogs which can be hired.
