TOI Magazine: How does one get started in this type of fitness? What is mandatory to start?

TOI Magazine: What made you guys want to pursue your careers in acroyoga? How did you both personally get started? Max and Liz: We met over 4 years ago and started practicing acroyoga together - Max moved to Dallas for grad school and had been exposed to acroyoga before but didn't have a partner to practice with consistently. We started doing yoga together and then he took me to an acroyoga jam one night over 4 years ago - and the rest is history. The more we practiced together and the more we saw the environment it created for people, the more we knew we had to teach this. We wanted to facilitate and create a safe space for people to play, become vulnerable, and heal. Balancing strength with softness and sensitivity, this practice transformed our lives and relationships in ways we didn't think was possible. It opened up infinite possibilities as we explored and deepened our practice together. TOI Magazine: Why is acroyoga such a beneficial activity for not only professionals, but people with everyday lifestyles? Max and Liz: Two main reasons. First, is your relationship with yourself. We grow older in large part more quickly than we should because we loose our sense of play. Acroyoga is analogous to a playground, where you get to explore your mental and physical status through play. How often do you play games as an adult? How often do you really have fun? Second, is your relationship with others. Acroyoga is the yoga of trust and communication,

Max and Liz: Anyone can do it! Mandatory - open mind. We recommend starting with an acroyoga class with an experienced instructor so that safety will not be compromised. Once you have the foundations down, you can start practicing at home with a friend and spotter! If you don't have a spotter, we recommend practicing near soft surfaces (mats, pillows, etc) surrounding you. We are actually coming out with a beginners acroyoga guide for safe home practices soon, so stay tuned! TOI Magazine: What exercises or workouts do you both recommend to get a beginner familiar with the basic techniques of acroyoga? Max and Liz: Core strengthening exercises, hamstring flexibility (for the base), arm strength, and inversions (for the flyer). TOI Magazine: What would you guys say to someone who is debating on pursuing acroyoga due to a lack of motivation? Max and Liz: We are told on a daily bases by our students how much this practice has changed their lives. From feeling trust and support to building confidence, the benefits are incredible and transformative.
