Due to a recent law from the Dutch cabinet (Actieplan Ammoniak) it is recently possible for pig farmers to sell their business to the state. In the Province of North Brabant, more than 300 farmers have subscribed for this rule, which means that many of the barns and farms will lose their purpose and will become empty. What to do with all these built elements? But more importantly, what will be the effects on the countryside and what will happen to the identity of the landscape around? From March until June 2020, eight first year Architecture and Landscape Architecture students of the Academy of Architecture in Amsterdam have been working on a design proposal for a former pig farm. All design proposals include an integral and sustainable vision for both the farm and farmlands surrounding the farm.

De recente wetgeving Actieplan Ammoniak van het Nederlandse kabinet maakt het sinds kort mogelijk voor varkenshouders om hun bedrijf te verkopen aan de staat. In de provincie Noord-Brabant hebben meer dan 300 boeren zich voor deze regel ingeschreven, waardoor veel stallen en boerderijen hun doel verliezen en leeg komen te staan. Wat te doen met al deze gebouwde elementen? Maar nog belangrijker: wat zijn de effecten op het platteland en wat gebeurt er met de identiteit van het omringende landschap? Van maart tot en met juni 2020 hebben acht eerstejaars studenten Architectuur en Landschapsarchitectuur van de Academie van Bouwkunst in Amsterdam gewerkt aan een ontwerpvoorstel voor een voormalige varkenshouderij. Alle plannen omvatten een integrale en duurzame visie voor zowel de boerderij als wel de omringende percelen.

In his plan, Rex introduces new forms of living and working in the shape of Tiny Farms, where residents take care of the surrounding plots and form a self-sufficient community. It is an attractive and natural way of life where different types of crops are interspersed with pieces of forest. The pig sheds will be removed and the cellars will be reused to set up so-called bio-meilers: compost heaps for energy production used for the Tiny Farms. The material from the demolished barns will be reused in the architecture of the Tiny Farms and one barn will be converted into a central meeting and sales barn for local products.

Rex introduceert in zijn plan nieuwe woon- en werkvormen in de vorm van Tiny Farms, waar v i s vizorgen oi sni o n en een zelfvoorzienende woongemeenschap bewoners gezamenlijk voor de omringende kavels vormen. Het is een aantrekkelijk en natuurlijke manier van leven waar verschillende soorten gewassen worden afgewisseld door stukjes bos. Kornelija proposes to turn the location into a nature campsite. For this purpose, she partly demolishes the current pigfarms in order to make new areas out of the harvested material. Spread out over the plots, new showers, toilets or shelters for campers are created by re-using the material. These different ‘ruins’ are connected by a new footpath, open meadows where people can placet heir tents and flower fields that attract bees and insects. Kornelija stelt voor om van de locatie een natuurcamping te maken. Ze breekt hiervoor de huidige varkensstallen deels af om van het geoogste materiaal nieuwe plekken te maken, verspreidt over de kavels, waar bijvoorbeeld douches, toiletten of beschutting ontstaat voor kampeerders. Deze verschillende ‘ruines’ zijn met elkaar verbonden door een nieuw wandelpad, open weides waar bezoekers hun tent op kunnen zetten en bloemenvelden die bijen en insecten aantrekken.

The ruins are built by using materialsand elements of barn demolishing.instead of trying to build new sturdy walls, the builder has to consider the beauty of each demolished brick or brick clusters and find a way to compose a wall that that celebrates the materials irregularity. It has to provide a home for the bees.

Azat was fascinated by the flexibility of the four existing barns and lifted them up to gave them a new place and meaning in the surroundings of the plot. Each barn will have its own identity and function; one central barn will be transformed into a food market, another will have the function as a gallery, a third barn will be dedicated to growing new crops and in the last barn energy will be extracted and stored. The four barns will have a place in a new, hilly landscape, with as a central point a meeting place that connects each barn together and where joint events can take place. Azat was gefascineerd door de flexibiliteit van de vier aanwezige schuren en heeft deze opgetild en een nieuwe plek en betekenis gegeven in de omgeving van de kavel. Iedere schuur krijgt een eigen identiteit en functie; zo wordt ĂŠĂŠn centrale schuur omgevormd tot food market, krijgt een andere de functie als galerie, is een derde schuur gericht op het telen van nieuwe gewassen en wordt in de laatste schuur energie gewonnen en opgeslagen. De vier schuren krijgen een plek in een nieuw, heuvelachtig landschap, met als centraal punt een ontmoetingsplein die iedere schuur met elkaar verbindt en waar gezamenlijke evenementen plaats kunnen vinden.

Natasha focused her project on a larger scale and designed a regional plan for the area between Veghel, Heeswijk-Dinther and Vorstenbosch. She proposes to plant a poplar forest on the current agricultural land in this area, for the production of the new wood product CLT (Cross Laminated Timber). Within this new production forest existing nurseries and buildings will be maintained, new forms of housing will be implemented and a new recreational network of footpaths and cycle paths will be created. A new CLT factory is being built on the plot of the current pigfarm where the wood from the production forest is converted into building material in a sustainable way.

Natasha heeft zich gefocust op een grotere schaal en heeft een regionaal plan ontworpen voor het gebied tussen Veghel, Heeswijk-Dinther en Vorstenbosch. Ze stelt voor om op de huidige landbouwgronden in dit gebied een populierenbos aan te planten, voor de productie van het nieuwe hout-product CLT (Cross Laminated Timber). Binnen het nieuwe productiebos is tevens ruimte voor nieuwe woonvormen, blijven bestaande kwekerijen en bebouwing gehandhaafd en ontstaat er een nieuw recreatief netwerk van wandel- en fietspaden. Op de plot van de huidige varkensstallen wordt een nieuwe CLT-fabriek gebouwd waar het hout van het productiebos op een duurzame manier wordt omgezet tot bouwmateriaal.

Emmy has researched what cows need most as a habitat and has used these ingredients to design an attractive landscape where cows can live naturally during their final years. Pieces of forest, flower meadows, open meadows and water ponds form a new landscape and habitat for (wild) cows. In a number of places open barns will be added to shelter the animals, there will be a central barn to store material and manure and she has also designed a flower house where flowerbouquets will be sold to passing recreationists.

Emmy heeft onderzocht waar koeien de meeste behoefte aan hebben als leefgebied en heeft met deze ingrediĂŤnten een aantrekkelijk landschap ontworpen waar koeien op een natuurlijke manier hun laatste jaren doormaken. Stukken bos, bloemenweides, open weides en watervijvers vormen een nieuw landschap en leefgebied voor (wilde) koeien. Op een aantal plekken worden open schuren toegevoegd ter beschutting van de dieren, komt er een centrale schuur ter opslag van materiaal en mest en heeft ze tevens een bloemenhuis ontworpen waar wildboeketten worden verkocht aan passerende recreanten.

Energetic Diagram Niccolรณ wants to create a central place of silence for the surrounding villages of Veghel, HeeswijkDinther and Uden, in the form of a memorial with a crematorium. This new building is centrally = will be designed as a memorial park. After positioned on the plot and the surrounding fields attending the cremation, each relative will plant a tree in memory of the deceased. In time, the open landscape will therefore slowly transform into a densely vegetated landscape park to which 1500x1h 1500x1h relatives can always return.

Che-Yi sees great opportunities to turn the Brabant landscape into a new energy landscape, by using algae energy. This relatively new form of energy production is designed in the form of vertical, glass tubes containing the algae. By arranging a relatively small area of the plot with these tubes, the villages Vorstenbosch, Heeswijk-Dinther and Veghel can be supplied with energy for a full year. Around the labyrinth of algae pipes, a new forest edge is planted, to soften the high-tech appearance of this energy plantation and let it blend into the Brabant landscape. The existing barns will be reused as storage, working spaces and a visitor centre where people can learn about this innovative form of energy generation. Che-Yi ziet binnen het Brabantse landschap grote kansen om een nieuw energielandschap te maken, door middel van algenenergie. Deze relatief nieuwe vorm van energiewinning is ontworpen in de vorm van verticale, glazen buizen waar de algen binnenin zitten. Door een relatief klein oppervlak van de kavel met deze buizen in te richten, kunnen voor een jaar lang de dorpen Vorstenbosch, Heeswijk-Dinther en Veghel van energie worden voorzien. Rondom het labyrint van algenbuizen wordt een nieuwe bosrand aangeplant, waardoor de high-tech uitstraling van deze energieplantage wordt verzacht en opgaat in het Brabantse landschap. De huidige schuren worden hergebruikt als opslag, werkruimtes en een bezoekerscentrum waar recreanten kunnen leren over deze innovatieve vorm van energiewinning.

By adding new types of agriculture, Teun wants to create a sustainable food landscape where valuable products are grown. He makes a combination of strip cultivation and forest silvopasture, in which a wide variety of crops are grown and different types of animals are kept. A new recreational path connects the surrounding landscape with the plots and leads to the former pig barns, which are being converted into a storage area and point of sale for local products. In the adjacent restaurant, visitors can taste new dishes using the countryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s harvested products.

Teun wil door het toevoegen van nieuwe soorten landbouw een duurzaam voedsellandschap te creĂŤren waar waardevolle producten worden geteeld. Hij maakt hierbij een combinatie van strokenteelt en bosweides (silvo-pasture), waarin een grote diversiteit van gewassen wordt geteeld en verschillende soorten dieren worden gehouden. Een nieuw recreatief pad verbindt het omringende landschap met de kavels en komt uit bij de voormalige varkensschuren die worden omgebouwd tot opslagruimte en verkooppunt van de lokale producten. In het naastgelegen restaurant kunnen bezoekers nieuwe gerechten proeven met de geoogste producten van het land.
