Rang 1/2—Helen. AN CHURACLAM—WHAT WERE WE LEARNING ABOUT IN NOVEMBER AND DECEMBER?

Rang 2/3 —Oisín. This mid-term Rang 2/3 have been working really hard in all subjects. We coved food in our world around us topic and have now moved onto Christmas. In Mathematics we have been working hard on all things weight, height and length. Introducing all children to cm, kg and ml. In out literacy work we have been working hard on out Irish reading, spelling, capital letter, full stops, been introduced to speech marks and looking at the past tense.

Along with all the hard work the children have been doing they have also enjoyed weekly signing lessons learning some wonderful Christmas songs with Múinteoir Tríona and really loved their hot chocolate and cookie day. We also had 2 new visitors in the classroom the past few weeks and seem to be enjoying themselves while keeping a watchful eye on all children. I hope everyone has a wonderful and safe Christmas and I look forward to seeing all children when we return in January.

Rang 4/5 —Éamann. We have been very busy over the last few weeks in Rang 4/5, especially in the build up to Christmas. Our topic for The World Around Us saw the children learning about the Arctic. Using our iPads in school the children learned how to research and compile information as well as completing Learning Logs at home. We learned about the different types of animals that can be found in the Arctic, the people who live there, explorers and the effects of climate change. I look forward to exploring Celtic history and mythology with the class as our next topic after Christmas. In Numeracy we have worked hard learning our Times Tables. Rang 4 have learned how to add two digits and also to round to the nearest ten to estimate an answer. We have also worked on patterns and sequences and recently moved on to three-digit addition. Rang 5 have worked on adding three digits, including answers over 1000. We have also worked on our ability to subtract

with exchange, subtracting two and three digit numbers. Recently, Rang 5 have begun learning about division as the inverse of multiplication. For our mathematic topic work, our class have learned how to measure volume and capacity, using litres and half litres. We have also learned how to collect and compile data using tally charts and bar charts, with Rang 5 developing their ability to read charts. We have recently revised our 2D shapes, identifying names and number of sides. The children studied shapes a little bit more in depth, Rang 4 worked on identifying symmetry in shapes and Rang 5 learned how to identify right angles. Our literacy work has involved reading different materials and answering questions in both Irish and English based on our topic of the Arctic. We have also been learning different aspects of both languages, such as: nouns, verbs, conjunctions and commas.

Rang 1 have been working hard on learning the names of letters and their initial sounds. Rang 2 are learning to read high frequency words in Irish and working on developing their reading skills. Maith sibh a pháistí!

Rang 5/6 —Pól. The children in Rang 5/6 were learning about the Polar Regions—The Arctic and Antarctica. We loved working on this topic and the knowledge that the children have is a testament to this. We used Google Earth, Google Expeditions and National Geographic Kids to develop our learning in a fun interactive way. We also completed Learning Logs on the topic which developed our learning even further. In Numeracy we have been working hard on reading graphs, learning our

times tables in multiplication and division and on our problem solving skills. During our recent self isolation period many of the children worked tremendously well with Google Classroom developing not only their numeracy and literacy skill, but also their ICT skills. We will be continuing with Google Classroom as a learning resource after Christmas so please get in touch with me if you are struggling to access your child’s Google Classroom profile.

Rang 7 —Orlaith. This term Rang 7 have worked extremely hard on our Titanic theme. They have taken part in researching facts and figures about the Titanic along with exploring the character profiles of the known passengers, ship builders and crew members of the Titanic. They have also very creatively designed their own 3D representation of the various rooms onboard the Titanic. In Numeracy we have learned about different forms of division and how division is connected to multiplication. In Literacy the class have covered com-

prehension tasks and looked at verbs and adverbs. We have also started reading the novel ‘Four Children and It’ by Jacqueline Wilson. In addition to class Dojo points and raffle tickets we have introduced 'Kindness Buttons' to the class. This allows pupils and staff to acknowledge acts of kindness and leave buttons in their individual kindness cups. It is clear that we have a very kind natured class . Lastly our class must also be commended on how hard they have worked on assessments this term. Maith sibh Rang 7 agus bíodh Nollaig mhór mhaith agaibh.

The Ant and the Grasshopper Fable - An Aesop's Fable– a story with a message. In a field one summer's day a Grasshopper was hopping about, chirping and singing to its heart's content. An Ant passed by, bearing along with great toil an ear of corn he was taking to the nest. "Why not come and chat with me," said the Grasshopper, "instead of toiling and moiling in that way?" "I am helping to lay up food for the winter," said the Ant, "and recommend you to do the same." "Why bother about winter?" said the Grasshopper; "we have got plenty of food at present." But the Ant went on its way and continued its toil. When the winter came the Grasshopper had no food and found itself dying of hunger, while it saw the ants distributing every day the corn and grain from the stores they had collected in the summer. Then the Grasshopper knew: It is best to prepare for the days of necessity.

The Running Man! Earlier in December, one of our teachers, Oisín, decided to run almost the distance of 2 marathons in 2 days. The 4/4/48 or four miles, every four hours for 48 hours (50 miles in total) challenge made famous by an ex American Navy Seal and Ultra Runner David Goggins, was used by Oisín to raise money to pay for Christmas dinners for the needy in North Belfast. With the help of some of our parents, friends, local celebrities, Paddy Barnes, Jane Adams and John Finucane MP, Oisín smashed the challenge set and in doing so raised an unbelievable £6, 800! Which translated into 340 dinners for people in North Belfast. What a hero! Maith sibh Oisín Shawney agus Luna! 10
