DAVID KOCH
DAVID KOCH CHAIRMAN’S REPORT What a year 2017 was - a footballing roller coaster like no other.
I was gobsmacked and asked him to clarify what the hell he was talking about.
It felt like a year we just didn’t quite get the return for all the effort everyone at the club had put in.
The executive responded with “you made it back into AFL finals, you lost in a cliff hanger, made an SANFL grand final and did what no other club has ever done in playing a game in Shanghai”.
Since the heartbreak of our AFL Elimination Final loss after the siren and our one-point loss in the SANFL Grand Final I’m sure we’ve all asked the footy gods the same question…what on earth did we do to deserve that? And they are not dissimilar to the questions that we asked after our devastating 2014 three-point AFL Preliminary Final loss and four-point SANFL Grand Final loss the following day? Why? Why us? Those results hurt. They hurt a lot. It burnt to the core and so many of us shared that hurt at the Port Club together on that sombre Sunday night after the SANFL Grand Final. The next day I walked into the AFL President’s meeting in Melbourne and a senior AFL executive walked up to me and said… “congratulations what a great year Port Adelaide has had”.
PORT ADELAIDE FOOTBALL CLUB 2017
To be honest it rocked me and gave me a swift reality check. Had I become a grumpy old man who had lost sight of the achievements we’d made in 2017? I don’t apologise for being hard to please and wanting success BUT we all, and especially me, need to celebrate the significant achievements. As a club and a community, we all know footy well and understand how tough it can be. Just ask Geof Motley about the heartbreak of losing three consecutive grand finals to Sturt in the late 1960s. Or Russell Ebert about losing consecutive grand finals to North Adelaide in 1971 and 1972. Or John Cahill for the humiliating defeat in the 1976 Grand Final after losing only two games for the entire year.
Our club lost six grand finals from 1966 to 1976. Talk about hurt and a lack of return for effort. So how did Port Adelaide respond? The club used the pain of defeat to ensure the same mistakes wouldn’t happen again. They demanded this club would not lay down and accept mediocrity and failure. Port Adelaide then won four of the next five premierships from 1977 to 1981 followed by nine premierships in twelve seasons from 1988 to 1999. Then think of the early 2000s in the AFL. 2001, we finished third at the end of the home-and-away season but were knocked out of the finals in straight sets; 2002 minor premiers, out in the preliminary final; 2003 minor premiers again, out in the preliminary final again. The courage and resilience of our 2004 Premiership team to lift themselves off the canvas again the following year to put themselves in the frame to challenge for the flag was one thing; to win it was another.
55
For more than 147 years, this resilience, this unwavering desire for success, this failure to accept mediocrity are the foundations which this club has been built on. And it’s that resilience which will lead this current playing group to success. Look at the young talent, all under 23, which stepped up and did us proud in 2017 - Dougal Howard, Tom Clurey, Riley Bonner, Darcy Byrne-Jones and Dan Houston. First year players Sam Powell-Pepper and Todd Marshall both had very impressive debut seasons. And then there’s the likes of Charlie Dixon rampaging through every game of the season for the first time in his career, crashing packs and playing inspiring footy, and Paddy Ryder who returned from being robbed of 12 months in the game, and the toughest year of his life, to become the All-Australian ruckman and our John Cahill Medallist as best and fairest. In 2018, I’m delighted to welcome 11 new players to our club. All of whom will be left in no doubt as to what it takes to represent Port Adelaide both on and off the field. A few years ago we set ourselves the challenge to be an employer of choice in the AFL, where players, their managers and their families saw us as a destination club which made them better footballers and people. I believe the elite players who have joined us for 2018 is testament to the quality of our football department on delivering on that challenge. From an SANFL perspective what about the effort of our captain Steven Summerton. His actions in 2017 were a testament to the incredible character he possesses. The way Summo led the Magpies, selflessly played in the Reserves side due to some contentious SANFL rules (which have since been changed) and inspired the entire club, has been outstanding. We look forward to Summo leading our new-look Magpies in the SANFL in 2018 as we strive to avenge last year’s disappointment. From a fitness point of view, we had our lowest injury count in our history in the AFL which is an enormous credit to our high performance and medical team, especially after Darren Burgess made the transition to Arsenal in July. We had 17 applicants from around the world apply for Burgo’s job. The top international candidate wanted to put “their stamp” on the program but when you have the best program already it was an easy decision to promote from within and
high performance manager Ian McKeown and his team have already done an outstanding job. Looking forward I have the utmost confidence in our football club - from the Board to our staff, to our coaches and players - that we know what’s before us and are ready to continue the climb up the mountain. I can feel it. 2017 has made us hungrier, make no mistake, and with the quality of the personnel that we have recruited to the club we are jumping out of our skins with enthusiasm for 2018. Ken’s long-term commitment to Port Adelaide tells me he too is up for the fight. What a great statement from Ken. Great clubs are built on stability and to have Ken leading our football program for at least the next four years gives a clear direction of where we are heading. I thank Ken, Chris Davies, Chad Cornes and the entire coaching team and football department for their relentless efforts across 2017 to return our club to finals football in both the AFL and SANFL. To Travis, Summo and the players, I know you are still hurting but are now looking ahead with great optimism and filled with renewed motivation and enthusiasm. I know our young playing group is ready to continue the climb and equally I know all of our new recruits are looking to earn the respect of their coaches, teammates and the entire Port Adelaide community through their actions. We have a leadership group led by Travis that is far from satisfied; there is so much unfinished business. From a football perspective, we are in great hands. Off-field we are in equally safe hands through the outstanding leadership of our chief executive Keith Thomas, our executive team and staff and my Board of Directors. Our club had a dream, a vision, a few years ago to take our club to China and for this to be achieved in 2017 in such a short space of time is an extraordinary feat and a testament to the quality of people we have at Port Adelaide.
Remember, every part of our China strategy is about building financial resources to fund an elite football department so that we can most effectively live our mantra of existing to win premierships and making our community proud. Speaking of finances, I am equally proud that we have been able to deliver a significantly positive financial result, our third consecutive profit. This will enable us to start reducing our debt and importantly continue our commitment to make Port Adelaide a profitable club not reliant on handouts and AFL equalisation funds. And with more than 60,000 club members and an average home attendance of 40,000 we achieved plenty in 2017. We could not have done any of this without the amazing support we have received from the entire Port Adelaide community including our members, supporters and corporate partners headed by OAK and Renault. For those who left the club at the end of 2017 please understand that wherever your career progresses, you and your family will forever be welcome at our club and you will be part of the Port Adelaide family. We all now look forward to 2018 with a great sense of optimism knowing we’ve learnt from the disappointments of 2017 whilst maturing as a football club with the inclusion of some quality people. We know the journey we are on. Let’s enjoy it together. There’ll be ups and downs but after all, footy is meant to be fun. It’s a great game, we love our club and we are striving for the same goal. As I’ve said before, there is nothing more powerful, more commanding than a unified Port Adelaide community. Thanks again for your support and passion and I look forward to seeing and hearing you at Adelaide Oval in 2018.
Remember, in taking an official game to China effectively on our own, Port Adelaide achieved what the world’s biggest sporting organisations in Western professional competitions such as the NFL, NBA and EPL have so far been unable to do. For this I am so proud of our club, which just over 20 years ago was confined to South Australia but is now establishing itself as a global best practise sporting organisation.

KEITH THOMAS CEO’S REPORT Don’t things move quickly?
We have come a long way.
It seems like yesterday that we were preparing for season 2012.
But it is the future that I am most excited about.
Just three wins in the previous year, no major commercial partners, SANFL owned and controlled, losing millions and kicking the footy into the tarps at West Lakes.
A club that great people want to join.
How things have changed. As devastated as we all were to fall to the West Coast Eagles in last year’s Elimination Final, that we did it at the magnificent Adelaide Oval in front of more than 40,000 passionate Port Adelaide supporters, with two major international brands on our guernsey, having earlier in the year made history by taking our club and our game abroad to Shanghai should not be glossed over lightly. Consider also three consecutive years of profitability on the back of a 60,000-strong membership base and therein lies the reasons why your club has been able to continue to support the growth and evolution of our football and community programs and will continue to do so.
A football program that wants for nothing, achieving sustained on field success. An industry leading centre of excellence for Aboriginal students. Further expansion into China. The introduction of women’s footy. A museum to capture our club’s history of success and relationship with the local district. And preparations for an unbelievable celebration of our first 150 years in 2020. This is the future we are dreaming about for Port Adelaide today. Of course, it’s going to take time, energy and a dose of boldness to get it all done. But we say… why not? We are, after all… Port Adelaide.

COMMUNITY REPORT POWER COMMUNITY LTD POWER COMMUNITY LTD made a simple pledge last year – to expand the reach of its youth, Aboriginal, multicultural and female programs across SA and beyond in 2017. And they didn’t fall short - over 61,000 people were engaged in PCL’s programs last year; a record annual reach for Port Adelaide Football Club’s community arm. In addition to its existing Power to End Violence Against Women, Power to be Positive, Community Youth Program and Powerful Futures program, PCL’s youth team added the brand new Power Intercultural Program to its repertoire in 2017. Led by recently retired Power player and multicultural ambassador Alipate Carlile, the PIC engaged students from over 84 cultures across South Australia, culminating in the inaugural Power Intercultural Cup – a round-robin football carnival held at Alberton Oval. This year also saw PCL work closely with the State Government to deliver a wellbeing and resilience program to automotive industry employees following the closure of Holden in SA, and in correctional facilities across the state.
The club’s industry-leading Aboriginal programs also continued to thrive in 2017, with the team travelling over 200,000kms throughout the year to deliver its’ foundation WillPOWER program to remote Aboriginal communities across Australia. The student favourite Aboriginal Power Cup has become a much-anticipated event on the PCL calendar, and 2017 was no exception with hundreds of young Aboriginal people descending on Alberton Oval for the annual event. A total of 95 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students successfully completed their South Australian Certificate of Education through the South Australian Aboriginal Sports Training Academy, as a part of the Aboriginal Power Cup program.
Another highlight was the announcement of the club’s Aboriginal Centre of Excellence, which is set for development in the Alberton precinct in coming years, and will be the first of its kind. To cap off a stellar year for the club in the community space, Power player Jack Hombsch was honoured with the prestigious Jim Stynes Community Leadership Award at the 2017 Brownlow Medal count, for his ongoing commitment to outstanding community work and leadership. Port Adelaide and PCL wishes to thank all program partners for their support in 2017, and look forward to another big year out in the community!
The Aboriginal AFL Academy had an excellent year on-field, securing 6 wins from 7 games, while also embarking on a trip to New Zealand for a cultural exchange in October which proved to be an incredible learning experience for the young men.

China Engagement

shanghai HISTORY IN THE MAKING
W
ithin four short years of Port Adelaide’s decision to explore the China opportunity, it participated in the historic match in Shanghai on 14 May 2017. It was a memorable day for the club, and further evidence of our historic commitment to push the limits of what is possible in pursuit of excellence, in the interests of the game. Port Adelaide now has a sophisticated, broad program of engagement in China. It has yielded major-level partners, established a business-to-business platform that includes both Australian and Chinese companies, and – believe it or not – a Power Footy program in Chinese schools. But it took this wonderful, clear day in May for our engagement in China to capture the imagination of the football public. The build-up to the game was, according to some commentators, akin to that of an AFL Grand Final. A number of events preceded the game itself, notably the Gala Dinner that took place on Saturday night, attended by political, sporting and business leaders. The PAFC events team did a magnificent job executing these events, which provided great memories for travelling fans and great exposure for the club.
There were myriad challenges in the week leading into the game. The fan experience at sporting events in China is vastly different from the Australian experience. At soccer games, crowds are segregated and no alcohol is served. But if the local authorities were concerned before the game about the large number of travellers congregating at Jiangwan Stadium, they would have been moved by the positive energy created by the Port Adelaide supporters at the game. The atmosphere created by the Port Adelaide fans - six thousand had travelled from Australia for the game was electric.
The greatest satisfaction was to see the pride and joy on the faces of all Port Adelaide people who experienced the day together: fans, players and administrators. A new page was written in the story of Port Adelaide Football Club, in which once again a new frontier was explored, and new territory conquered. It was a great privilege to be involved in such a memorable day.
The total experience was the sum of many memorable moments. Following the Chinese National Anthem, when one would expect the Australian National Anthem to be played, the first few bars of Port Adelaide’s club song was played. We had always argued that football was an expression of Australian culture – but not to this extent! Never Tear Us Apart was sung with gusto. And there were also a number of exciting moments on the field, such as the freakish soccer goal from Justin Westhoff from the boundary line.

were rewarded with improvements across a lot of areas.
Does it still hurt? Does that pain drive you?
In this industry though you can never be satisfied and we certainly aren’t. Our unrelenting pursuit of improvement continues to drive changes in how we operate, and has driven significant changes in our personnel too, on both sides of the fence.
I don’t think the pain should drive us. I think the promise of what we delivered over the previous 23-round season should be what motivates us to raise the bar again in 2018. This time last year we as a football club were under a lot of pressure - pressure we’d brought on ourselves through our performances – but I couldn’t be more proud of how our players, coaches and administration responded to that challenge.
We’ve farewelled Jackson Trengove, Angus Monfries, Aaron Young, Matt White, Jarman Impey, Matthew Lobbe, Logan Austin, Brett Eddy, Jesse Palmer, Brendon Ah Chee and Nathan Krakouer all great people who’ve made significant contributions to our football club and will always be welcomed back.
No aspect of our football department was immune from scrutiny. We tweaked a lot of areas off-field and on, which added up to a significant change to our game style.
Off-field, we’ve said goodbye to Darren Burgess, Jacob Surjan and others from the football department and administration.
On the other side of the coin we’ve welcomed experienced players Tom Rockliff, Jack Watts, Stephen Motlop, Trent McKenzie, Jack Trengove and Lindsay Thomas; plus draftees Sam Hayes, Kane Farrell, Jake Patmore, Joel Garner and Dom Barry. We achieved exactly what we set out to over the player exchange periods and are optimistic we’ve strengthened our position as a football club, but that guarantees nothing. To achieve the success we so desperately want needs hard work and teamwork. That work is underway and will continue as we chase a 38th premiership for this great football club.
It took honesty and strength to make those changes - and courage to stick with them when the results weren’t immediate - but as coaches, as players and as a club; we stuck to our guns and

CHAD CORNES MAGPIES SENIOR COACH REFLECTS ON SEASON 2017, HIS NEXT CHAPTER AT THE PORT ADELAIDE FOOTBALL CLUB, AND THE INTRODUCTION OF MATTHEW LOKAN THE 2017 season ended in disappointment but there was a lot to be proud of in what we achieved to be there on grand final day. A loss at Glenelg in Round 1 was far from the start we expected but the way we responded spoke volumes of the spirit, skill and determination in our group. To come from behind the following week against Norwood, and win our first game at the Parade in a decade, in many ways set up our season. The emotion on the ground after Robbie Young’s snap put us in front late in the game was incredible. That feeling spilled into the rooms after the game and set the tone for the season to come. We lost only four more games to finish the regular season just one game from the top of the ladder.
Two strong finals wins, over the 2016 Grand Finalists Sturt and the Eagles, had us heading into the 2017 decider full of confidence, but history shows we didn’t get the job done. Developing strong bonds between the Power-listed players and the contracted players is always one of the challenges for the Magpies. It was the unity of the group that was a major factor in the way we performed in 2017. I couldn’t fault the attitude of our Powerlisted players and their commitment when playing for the Magpies. Whether fighting to earn promotion to AFL level or coming back after being omitted, the team was always the primary focus above the individual. Our contracted players faced a challenging year with limited opportunities because of our good run with injuries, but performed well whenever called on. Most of them have left the club now and I thank them for their efforts.
Personally I have mixed emotions leaving the role of senior coach with the Magpies. To see my name on the honour board beneath the likes of Fos Williams and Jack Cahill is truly humbling. I’ve learned an incredible amount about coaching, football and myself over the past two seasons and have made lasting relationships with some great young footballers and people. Through my new role as a forwards development coach I will continue to be strongly involved with the Magpies but the time is right for me and the team to hand over the reins as senior coach. The transition is made easier by the confidence I have that Matthew Lokan brings to Alberton all the qualities needed to build on the Magpies’ program.

PADDY RYDER BEST AND FAIREST - PORT ADELAIDE Paddy Ryder made a resounding return to AFL football in 2017 winning the John Cahill Medal – a remarkable feat considering he missed the entirety of the 2016 season. Ryder was just the third Aboriginal player to be awarded the Power’s highest individual honour, joining previous winners Gavin Wanganeen and Chad Wingard. He held on to win Port Adelaide’s Best and Fairest count by seven votes from Charlie Dixon – with Tom Jonas, Robbie Gray and Brad Ebert rounding out the top five.
The 196cm ruckman was also rewarded with All-Australian selection for the first time in his career, capping off a superb individual season. Regarded as one of the most prolific tapruckmen in the league, Ryder’s influence in 2017 was immense – leading Port to be the No.1 ranked side for scoring from stoppages in the AFL. The former Bomber had 40+ hit-outs on 10 occasions in 2017, while racking up plenty of his own football and kicking 11 goals for the year. The 29-year-old had many shining moments in 2017 but his most memorable was in the dying seconds against the Saints in Round 19.
Trailing by four points with just 19 seconds on the clock, Ryder masterfully tapped the ball to Robbie Gray who kicked truly from 50 to secure a famous victory and send the Port faithful at Adelaide Oval into chaos. Having moved from Essendon to Alberton at the end of the 2014 season, Ryder has had to overcome some serious obstacles in his short time at Port Adelaide. The feats he achieved in 2017 are a true testament to the character he possesses and the hard work he has put in – a fantastic story of someone trying to build their own legacy at Port Adelaide.
Brendon ah chee BEST AND FAIREST - PORT ADELAIDE MAGPIES Brendon Ah Chee was crowned the Magpies Best and Fairest in 2017, claiming the A. R. McLean Medal by three votes from Jimmy Toumpas, with Brett Eddy rounding out the top three. Ah Chee was a key figure in the Magpies line-up in 2017, kicking 15 goals from his 16 games while averaging 22 disposals from the midfield. His outstanding individual season saw him finish second in the Magarey Medal count – four votes behind Norwood’s Mitch Grigg.
The classy midfield/forward has struggled to play consistent football in Port Adelaide’s senior side since being drafted in 2011 with pick No. 45.
Port Adelaide orchestrated a deal with the Eagles which saw the young midfielder head back home to Western Australia in 2018 and beyond.
The talented 24-year-old was instrumental in a number of wins for the black and white, with his foot skills able to cut through opposition defences.
The club thanks Ah Chee for his sixseason contribution and wishes him all the best for the next chapter in his football journey.
At the end of season 2017, West Australian-born Ah Chee, requested a trade to the West Coast Eagles seeking greater AFL opportunity.

Vale Dave Boyd 1927-2017 For all the great words that have been spoken or written about Dave Boyd across his illustrious career as a Port Adelaide player and administrator, none ring truer than those spoken by ninetime Port Adelaide premiership legend Geof Motley shortly after his passing last December. Motley, a close friend and great teammate of Boyd, described him as being as loyal to Port Adelaide and his friends as anyone he’s ever met. “David Boyd would be as Port Adelaide as anyone in the history of this great club,” Motley proudly declared.
and represented South Australia on 19 occasions. Boyd was selected in Port Adelaide’s ‘Greatest Team of the Greatest Club’ and is a member of both the club’s Hall of Fame and the SANFL Hall of Fame. Boyd was also awarded life membership of Port Adelaide and the SANFL.
“There is no doubt we all have a heavy heart knowing we have lost one of the all-time greats of Port Adelaide.
Revered Port Adelaide player and coach Fos Williams once described Boyd as “classy” and “a perfect footballer with great dash from the centre”.
“One look at his resume will leave you in no doubt of his amazing contribution to our club.
Motley concurred with his former coach’s appraisal of Boyd.
“When David was born he was born with black and white booties on. He lived in the district and even lied about his age to try and get a game for the colts.
“David had a lot of brilliance as a centreman. He possessed a long kick, a beautiful drop kick and was a strong mark above his head,” remembered Motley.
“This club was his life. David lived totally for Port Adelaide. Totally. He gave more than his worth for this club.
“He possessed all the skills and versatility required to be a great player. He could play with great effect in the centre, at half-forward or half-back, it didn’t matter.
“David is now on the highest pedestal, on top of the Magpie nest, sitting alongside his great mate Ted Whelan.” Boyd passed away aged 90 after a long battle with illness. Boyd’s playing resume will ensure he is remembered as one of the greatest players in Port Adelaide’s rich 147-year history. Boyd was a seven-time premiership player at Alberton and was an integral part of the Magpies incomparable team of the 1950s that won an Australian record six consecutive flags from 19541959. From an individual perspective Boyd won the 1956 Magarey Medal as the best and fairest player in the SANFL
“Dave Boyd was synonymous with the Port Adelaide Football Club. He dedicated a massive part of his life, 43 consecutive years of service in fact, to making Port Adelaide a great football club,” said Mr Thomas.
“Often when he did something on the field it was simply breath taking for all of us watching but for David it was just normal, a matter of course.” Upon his retirement from playing Boyd continued to serve the club as a successful administrator for the next three decades. From 1961-1990 Boyd was on the Board of Directors at Port Adelaide, where he also served as Chairman of Selectors and the club’s SANFL league director. Port Adelaide chief executive Keith Thomas said the loss of Boyd would be felt by all within the Port Adelaide family.
“A seven-time premiership player including a member of our famous record breaking six-in-a-row era of the 1950s, a Magarey Medallist and South Australian state representative tells you how good a player Dave Boyd was. “But that only tells half the story. Equally impressive was his thirty years of administrative service at Board level that ensured Port Adelaide’s greatness continued for decades to follow. “On behalf of the entire Port Adelaide community I pass on my heartfelt condolences to Dave’s children Sandra, Greg and Russell and their extended families. “As difficult a time as it is, it allows us to celebrate a truly brilliant career. Dave Boyd’s legend and legacy will live on forever at Alberton and he will be remembered as one of the greatest contributors to the Port Adelaide Football Club.” Boyd was farewelled on Thursday 21 December at a public memorial service at Alberton Oval. Port Adelaide will honour Boyd’s memory and extraordinary career in the opening Round of 2018.

Vale Peter Obst 1937-2017 The Port Adelaide community mourned the passing of 1962 Best and Fairest winner and six-time premiership player Peter Obst in May last year, aged 80.
“And he was tall and athletic, could find the ball and was an accurate shot at goal which made him very dangerous for opposition teams.
Part of a proud Port Adelaide family, ‘Picket Pete’ was a champion halfforward for the club and played alongside his late brother Trevor in the black and white.
“Peter played a key role in our premierships throughout the 1950s and 60s. He would always make a contest and if he didn’t mark the ball, generally the ball would come to ground.
His six flags won in the Port Adelaide jumper came amid the golden era of the club under the watchful eye of master coach Fos Williams.
“When I think of Peter I remember a fierce, courageous competitor who was very, very talented. Ultimately, Peter was everything you wanted in a Port Adelaide footballer.”
A big-marking player, it was his stellar form early in 1962 that saw him shoot to the height of popularity at Alberton and in Adelaide. He won Port’s Best and Fairest medal that year, and was runnerup in the Magarey Medal count. Former teammate John Cahill remembers Obst as an exceptional talent and a key contributor to the Magpies premiership successes in the 1950s and 60s.
Peter’s son, Andrew, was a four-time premiership player with Port Adelaide and had a successful 149-game AFL career at Melbourne. His grand-nephew is current Port Adelaide midfielder Brad Ebert. Family, friends and former teammates gathered to celebrate the life and achievements of Peter Obst at a memorial service at Alberton Oval on May 19 last year.
Obst, a life member of Port Adelaide, finished after 171 games for the club and 167 goals. He also represented South Australia on four occasions. The son of Ken and Mabel Obst, Peter was a member of a dynasty of many Port Adelaide footballers. Ken himself played 165 games for Port Adelaide and in three premierships with the club.
“Peter was well before his time as a player in that he was very balanced and could dispose of the ball with great skill on either side of his body. He was very well balanced,” recalled Cahill.

Vale bruce light 1949-2018 “Nothing’s faster than the speed of Light.” That was the catchcry that buzzed around suburban ovals throughout the 1970s generally after another scorching run from Port Adelaide wingman Bruce Light that would leave opponents floundering in his wake and supporters aghast with admiration. But in January the Port Adelaide community learnt that the centrewing at Alberton would never quite be the same again as the club sadly lost favourite son Light after he passed away at the age of 68, following a long battle with illness. Light thrilled a legion of Port Adelaide fans across a 216-game career from 1967 to 1978. His dynamic attributes as a player, coupled with his trademark flowing blond hair. Light was one the most popular players to ever pull on a Magpies guernsey. Across his twelve seasons at the club it felt like every second Port Adelaide supporter had “Bruce 26 Light” on the back of their duffle coat, such was his popularity. Light, who was awarded Port Adelaide Life Membership in 1976 and played a pivotal role the following season in the club’s drought-breaking 1977 premiership, had a presence on-field like no other. Light was tough and courageous yet beautifully balanced and highly skilled at the same time. He was quick and agile and could play the outside game yet loved nothing more than winning a hardball in the real heat of battle.
His close friend and premiership captain Russell Ebert recalls a man who typified everything Port Adelaide. “Bruce had the respect of everyone. Regardless of who you asked - Port Adelaide supporters, fellow teammates or casual observers - Bruce Light would invariably be in the top three for people’s favourite players across his career,” remembered Ebert. “Bruce was different to wingman of that time. He loved being in the thick of the action and he had the courage to back it up. But he was also the fastest player I’ve ever seen which made him very popular with our supporters but not so popular with opposition wingman.” Similarly, in the book Dynasty, legendary Port Adelaide player and coach Fos Williams described Light as a “superior footballer”. “He was courageous, he’d wave the ball around and get away with it and was just a natural, showing the skills on both sides of his body,” said Williams.
For all the incredible football qualities Light possessed it was what he did for others off-field that belied his rugged appearance and resonated most with close friends like Ebert. “Bruce was a great friend. You often get asked about teammates you would go to war with and I know Bruce would be the first to put his hand up to be alongside you,” said Ebert. “Footy was a vehicle for Bruce to do other things in life that were important to him and to help others. During his career, Bruce went back to study as a mature-aged student and got a teaching degree. One of his great passions was teaching and helping the children of Ashford Special School here in Adelaide to develop and achieve their goals and he spent more than a decade in that role. “Beyond football, Bruce had many amazing qualities that a lot of people didn’t see and he’ll be sadly missed by all those who had the pleasure of knowing him.”
Ebert fondly reflects on Light’s career noting his performance in State games versus Victoria as highlights along with his brilliant 1977 finals series for Port Adelaide. For Light, team success always overshadowed individual glory. “Bruce was all about team success and triumph for the whole club. Along with his teammates, Bruce loved the trainers and volunteers at the club and always felt a real sense of responsibility toward the entire club and supporter base. And anyone who saw Bruce play would know he played like he carried that responsibility,” said Ebert.

CHRIS DAVIES
CHRIS DAVIES PORT ADELAIDE GENERAL MANAGER - FOOTBALL AFL PROGRAM At the end of last season, we conducted a comprehensive review of our entire football department which led to some changes. From a coaching perspective, senior coach Ken Hinkley extended his contract here at Alberton by a further three years meaning he’ll be at the club until at least the end of 2021.
Scott brings some real expertise to the role having mentored some of the Crows midfielders last year while he was still on their list. And given Scott is so recently out the game he is still physically fit enough to train with the players enabling him to see what the players are seeing and providing that feedback straight back to Ken and the other coaches.
As part of the personnel changes made to the coaching group we welcomed both Chad Cornes and Scott Thompson into the AFL program and farewelled long-time club servant Jacob Surjan.
As mentioned, we farewell Surj after a playing and coaching career here at Alberton that dates back to 2004. Surj was a wonderful contributor to our club both on and off the field and he and his family will always be part of the bigger Port Adelaide family. We wish him all the best in his new coaching role at North Adelaide.
Chad Cornes finished as senior coach of the Magpies after two years at the helm and now joins the AFL program as a fulltime forwards development coach.
After the departure of former highperformance manager Darren Burgess in July the club conducted an extensive, international search for his replacement.
This was always part of our original progression plan for Chad. He will be no stranger to the Magpies moving forward though as his role means that he will be the Magpies forwards coach on SANFL game days.
We received a number of outstanding international applications but by far the most impressive came from within. Our strength and conditioning coach Ian McKeown, who had worked so closely with Burgo over the previous two seasons, was the clear standout.
This obviously provides great stability for our entire coaching group and playing squad.
Joining Chad in a development role is former Crows champion Scott Thompson. Scott, of course, also has a strong connection with Port Adelaide having come through the Magpies’ junior ranks before originally being recruited by Melbourne into the AFL system. Scott takes on the role as midfield development coach within our AFL program and will be the Magpies midfield coach on game-days.
PORT ADELAIDE FOOTBALL CLUB 2017
Mackers has taken a lot of learnings from Burgo but also stamped his own imprimatur on pre-season and so far its been a very successful and seamless transition.
Tim is another example of a former Port Adelaide employee returning to the club after honing his craft in an elite international sporting competition. SANFL PROGRAM With Chad Cornes transitioning into the AFL program full-time for 2018 we were delighted to recruit Matthew Lokan as senior coach of the Magpies on a threeyear contract. Matthew played over 100 games for the Magpies in the SANFL and also spent three seasons in the AFL with Collingwood. He joins us after coaching Glenelg for the past four seasons at SANFL level. With his football experience, intimate understanding of Port Adelaide and teaching background we are confident that Matthew is the perfect candidate to balance developing our young playing group at SANFL level with the ultimate goal of striving for premiership success. As mentioned earlier, Matthew will be supported by assistant coaches Chad Cornes (forwards), Scott Thompson (midfield) and Trent Hentschel (defence). At Reserves level Scott Matthews replaces Mark Clayton as coach who accepted a role at South Adelaide at season’s end.
Nick Richardson, who joined the club at the start of last pre-season, replaces Mackers as our new strength and conditioning coach.
Scott was on our original AFL list back in 1997 and played league football for the Eagles in the SANFL. He went onto coach the Eagles to two SANFL reserves premierships and last year was part of the Magpies coaching team.
Mackers’ right hand man is Stuart Graham who now assumes the role of head of sports science and conditioning while Tim O’Leary returns to the club as head of medical services after spending the last couple of years at the Milwaukee Bucks in the NBA.
We thank Clayts for his extraordinary service to Port Adelaide as both a player and coach. The Clayton name is synonymous with Port Adelaide and he and his family will forever be part of our club. We wish him well in his new role at the Panthers.

NEXT GENERATION ACADEMIES With the departure of Shaun Hart at season’s end we appointed Stuart Cochrane to head up our Next Generation Academy programs for 2018 and moving forward. In October, Shaun accepted the role as head of development at the Gold Coast Suns after four seasons here at Alberton. Shaun is one of the great football people and we wish him and his family all the best as they head back to Queensland to start a new chapter in their lives. We are very fortunate to have a readymade replacement from within our club to take on this important role. Stuey is an outstanding people’s person and loves to teach and develop. He is the perfect person to lead these programs, programs that have already become very significant to us and that you’ll hear more about in 2018. Essentially, our Next Generation Academies are made of the following three academies – Father/Son, Multicultural & Indigenous and Female talent. FATHER/SON Already there is great excitement with our Father/Son Academy. We are working on a semi-regular basis with Taj Schofield (son of Jarrad), Trent Burgoyne (son of Peter) and Mitch and Jackson Mead (sons of Darren). We will continue to work closely with all these young men as they develop and become eligible to nominate for the AFL Draft.
MULTICULTURAL AND INDIGENOUS
LIST MANAGEMENT AND RECRUITING
Targeting players from Africa and Asia, and Aboriginal players from prescribed remote regions in South Australia, this academy commenced operation at the start of 2017. It involves fortnightly sessions and identifying players for participation in club football, Port Adelaide’s own cultural programs and the Aboriginal Power Cup.
A lot has been said and written about our list management and recruiting strategy over the last couple of years.
Two of our Multicultural Academy members – Kai Pudney and Martin Frederick - have been approved for talent concessions by the AFL and will be eligible to be bid upon in the draft by Port Adelaide once age-eligible. The duo were members of the South Australia Under-17 State Futures squad in 2017 and have been training with us across pre-season. FEMALE TALENT Working with female footballers from Woodville-West Torrens, Norwood, South Adelaide and West Adelaide, this program works to develop high-quality female footballers for the future of elite football in Australia, including AFLW, SANFLW and local clubs. This program commenced in May 2017 and involves talented female players aged 11-18 training at Alberton on a weekly basis.
The bottom line is we had a very clear plan and are comfortable with how our plan has played out. Allow me just to recap what we have done in this area over the last 18 months or so. During the trade period of 2016 we traded in our “future” 2017 first-round pick which, with our other picks, allowed us to draft Todd Marshall, Sam PowellPepper, Joe Atley and Willem Drew. We were very pleased with this outcome and we are confident all of these players will be long-term contributors to Port Adelaide. Having traded our 2017 first-round pick this restricted us from having an early pick at the 2017 AFL Draft. However, we were delighted with the five players we drafted with our later picks and we are equally confident that Sam Hayes, Kane Farrell, Jake Patmore, Joel Garner and Dom Barry will have a lot to offer. During the recent free agency and trade period we acquired six ready-made players who we consider can all play a role for us. Through the free agency period we welcomed former Brisbane Lions captain Tom Rockliff and Geelong midfield/ forward Steven Motlop. We then traded pick 31 for Melbourne’s Jack Watts and also brought in Trent McKenzie from the Gold Coast, former Demon captain Jack Trengove and North Melbourne forward Lindsay Thomas, all as delisted free agents. With the players that left the club and the new players that we’ve brought in, our list is around three months older compared to last year which we are very comfortable with particularly allowing for the fact that we have a first -round pick in the 2018 AFL Draft, along with two second-round picks and two thirdround picks.

Both the AFL players and the contracted players have been really welcoming and really willing to work hard which has made it a smooth transition. It’s a big workload having a role with the AFL program as well as my responsibilities coaching the Magpies. The Magpies training days coincide with the main training days for the Power so it’s a big commitment, but having come from coaching my own SANFL side, I’m used to a full day’s work followed by training in the evening so it hasn’t been too much of a shock to the system. What’s the biggest challenge you’ve had since returning to Alberton? Learning the terminology that they use in the AFL program took a bit of getting used to in the beginning. Every football team, or club, has specific terminology that they use so I had a bit of homework to do on that front but I’m up to speed now.
How is the Magpies squad looking? We’re building nicely with some exciting signings. It’s a young group but Steve Summerton re-committed late last year, which is great for the footy club. He can take his leadership to a new level as a mentor to our younger guys coming through. What names should Magpies fans look out for in the 2018 season? Dallas Hill is a 24-year-old who has come to us from Central. He has played some really strong SANFL football over the years. He’s a lead-up player who knows where the goals are and has a mature body so should be ready to make an impact. We also have a young lad called Sam Davidson who’s come down from the Gold Coast Suns. He’s a 19-year-old with serious pace and creativity on the outside. He should offer some excitement and be a good addition to our side as well.
Mitchell Mead, the eldest son of club legend Darren, has joined us too. It’s always great for a traditional club like Port Adelaide to continue family connections down the generations. What goals do you have for the Magpies in 2018? This is Port Adelaide. We expect to win. The players know that and that’s how I’ll be coaching. I’m not going to predict a ladder position or a number of wins but I’ll judge our performance by the attitude and effort I see at training and in games regardless of who is available to pull on the Magpies jumper in any given week. Last year we had a very good run with injuries which always helps but if we need to call on our contracted players they’ll know what role they need to play and what’s expected of them.
Lewin Davis has also come across from the Bendigo Pioneers in the TAC Cup. Lewin is also a 19-year-old mid-sized forward with very good skills.

“I feel like my best footy is still in front of me” TOM ROCKLIFF TOM ROCKLIFF is salivating at the prospect of playing in front of a packed Adelaide Oval, as the former-Lion prepares to play his first season with the Power in 2018.
“They talked me through their position and where they see themselves as a football club, and [talked about] hopefully what I can bring to the group,” he said.
Rockliff and his family made the move to South Australia after nine years with the Lions, and the 27-year-old said he is excited to join a “good family club”.
“I’m really confident with the program in place at Port Adelaide and the recruits we’ve had in the last few years - all of them have seemed to play better football.”
“Playing in Brisbane for so many years, you’re sort of out of the spotlight,” Rockliff said. “To get here and play home games at Adelaide Oval in front of 50,000 [fans] is exciting. “There are no more passionate supporters than Port Adelaide supporters.
“I feel like my best footy is still in front of me.” Rockliff will wear the famous number 11 guernsey in 2018, previously worn by Damien Hardwick and club legend Scott Hodges.
“I’ve been on the end of it, so I can’t wait to be on the good side of it.” The two-time Brisbane Lions club champion paid special tribute to Port Adelaide’s coach Ken Hinkley and skipper Travis Boak, saying the two were extremely influential in his decision to come to Alberton.

“the atmosphere at a Power home game is electric” JACK WATTS JACK WATTS will be looking to make an immediate impression on the Port faithful if given the opportunity to face Fremantle at Adelaide Oval in the Power’ season opener.
“Once I sat down with Kenny [Hinkley] and some of the boys, my mind was made up” he said. “I admire Travis Boak and the way he goes about his footy.
After joining the Power in a trade with the Demons in October, the 26-year-old was quick to label Port’s supporters as a force to be reckoned with.
“His hard running, his effort and his team-first style as a captain…I really admire that.”
He said the atmosphere at a Power home game is electric.
Watts will don number 23 in 2018, previously worn by club veteran and Port Adelaide Life Member Matthew Lobbe.
“There are some pretty amazing Port Adelaide supporters I would love to impress and get on my side, so I’m looking forward to that,” he said. “As an opposition player, it still gives me tingles.” “I can’t imagine what it will be like to run out there with Never Tear Us Apart blasting.” The sentiment echoes fellow recruit Tom Rockliff’s comments when he signed for the Power - the ex-Lion believes Port’s supporters are the most passionate in the league. Watts also said the opportunity to play under coach Ken Hinkley and alongside the club’s longest-serving AFL skipper, Travis Boak, made his decision to move to South Australia an easy one.

“We picked up some really good players this year” STEVEN MOTLOP TEAM success and strong family ties to the club were the factors contributing to Steven Motlop’s decision to come to Port Adelaide in 2018 and beyond. Motlop nominated the Power as his destination of choice during the 2017 trade period, and the move was made official when Geelong opted not to match Port’s offer to lure the speedy forward to Alberton. “One of the reasons why I’m playing footy is because I want to win a premiership,” Motlop said.
“My brother Daniel lives in Adelaide and we have a business here.” “My cousin Marlon works at Port Adelaide as well.” “It’s not that I wasn’t happy at Geelong – I was very happy – but obviously I’m going to love being around my family.” Motlop will wear No. 6 for the Power this season, previously worn by the recently retired livewire forward Angus Monfries.
“We picked up some really good players this year to go with a great bunch already. “I think we are going to be able to contend this year, so my decision was based around that.” Motlop kicked 175 goals from his 135 appearances with the Cats since making his AFL debut in 2010, but the 26-yearold said the idea of being close to family in SA was too strong resist “Family is the most important thing to me, and if I’m happy off the field hopefully it’s going to make me play good footy,” he said.

“I’ve finally been able to attack a pre-season like I want to” JACK TRENGOVE A “nothing to lose” mentality is driving former Demon Jack Trengove to embrace the AFL lifeline offered to him by Port Adelaide. Trengove signed with the Power as a delisted free agent, after playing 86 games with Melbourne across eight seasons and being delisted at the end of 2017. The 26-year-old had been hampered by foot injuries early in his career but has made an impression on coaches during his first pre-season at Alberton. “It’s been a bit of a whirlwind, this whole experience,” Trengove said. “I couldn’t be more excited and bullish about what’s ahead because I’ve finally been able to attack a pre-season like I want to and have no restrictions.” The former No. 2 draft pick said it had been a frustrating few years with injury, but he was optimistic about the future after playing consistent football in the last two years.
“It gives me a hell of a lot of confidence in my own body because after missing two years, you certainly have your doubts… you’re unsure of whether your body can cope.” The former Demons skipper – and youngest club captain in VFL/AFL history – said an open conversation with Port coach Ken Hinkley was crucial to the continuation of his career. “Ken was just upfront and honest…. he told me the situation and said the opportunity was there if I wanted it,” he said. “The chats that I’ve had with Ken have already instilled a lot of confidence in what’s possible.” Trengove was handed former Power speedster Matt White’s number 19 for the 2018 season.
“I haven’t missed a beat in the last two years, and I’ve played finals footy there [VFL] as well,” he said. “I played about 23 games a year for the last two years.

“I can’t wait to get out there in Port colours” TRENT MCKENZIE TRENT MCKENZIE is excited to play under his former Suns coach Ken Hinkley once again after signing a one-year contract with the Power during the 2017 trade period. The delisted free agent was originally picked up as a 17-year-old access selection in the inaugural Gold Coast team, where Hinkley was an assistant coach from 2009-2012. McKenzie said the relationship he formed with Hinkley in his time at the Suns and the opportunity to reignite his career were important factors in his decision to relocate to Alberton. “I spoke to him pretty early on in the process and he was keen to get me across,” McKenzie said. “It was great to get to Port Adelaide and work with him again.
The raking left-footer has enjoyed the challenge of a demanding pre-season, and is excited for a potential move up the field in 2018. “It’s been great to get some running in to my legs so far – hopefully I can get up the ground a bit and deliver some nice kicks to the big fellas up forward this season,” he said. “Getting the respect of my new teammates and coaches is really important to me, hopefully I have been able to do that. “I can’t wait to get out there in Port colours.” McKenzie will wear No. 12 in 2018, previously worn by club stalwart and 2011 John Cahill Medallist Jackson Trengove.
“There were a few good pick-ups in the trade period - it’s a big club and I’m looking forward to playing in front of the fans.” The 25-year-old defender played 106 games and kicked 22 goals during his time with the Suns. He also played alongside big man Charlie Dixon at the Suns, and now shares a house with him in Adelaide.

“I’m extremely excited for the year ahead” LINDSAY THOMAS LINDSAY THOMAS isn’t planning on making up the numbers at Port Adelaide this year and believes his best football is still good enough to be one of the premier small forwards in the AFL. The former Kangaroo joined Port Adelaide in 2017 through the Rookie Draft. While an inconsistent season kept him to nine AFL games at North Melbourne in 2017, he still showed glimpses of the impact he can have around the ground. And a fresh start with the Power will be key to reinvigorating his game, according to Thomas.
The 29-year-old says it was an emotional return to Alberton Oval for the first time in 11 years. “When I arrived for my first day I kind of had to pinch myself,” he said. “To walk on to the ground for the first time in over a decade, it brought back some good memories. “I probably had 30 seconds to myself to scope out the place again.” Thomas has been handed No. 48 for the 2018 season, previously worn by mercurial half-back flanker Nathan Krakouer.
“I had a pretty quiet year last year, it’s well documented, but if you look at my stats before then, I think they match up with some of the best small forwards in the competition,” he said. “I want to prove that I am still good enough at AFL level, and that starts with a committed pre-season at the Power. “The group have been fantastic since my move back home, and I’m extremely excited for the year ahead.” Thomas hails from Port Lincoln and played 38 junior games, 11 reserves games and six senior games for the Port Adelaide Magpies before being drafted by the Kangaroos.

DRAFTEE PROFILES
DRAFTee PROFILES GEOFF PARKER - NATIONAL RECRUITING MANAGER A promising young ruckman, three young midfielders and a 23-year-old seeking a second chance in the AFL joined Port Adelaide in the 2017 National Draft. The Power chose ruckman Sam Hayes with its first pick, number 47; midfielders Kane Farrell, Jake Patmore and Joel Garner with picks 51, 58 and 60 respectively; and former Melbourne player Dom Barry with its final selection, 61. Sam Hayes is a dual All-Australian ruckman at Under-18 level. Like all young talls he’ll need time to develop
but his mobility and strength overhead also make him a promising option in the forward line. Kane Farrell is a medium-sized midfielder who possesses an elite left-foot kick and excites with his marking ability and line-breaking run. He was an outstanding performer in the Draft Combine’s agility and 20-metre sprint tests. Jake Patmore has similar attributes to Farrell – a line-breaker with great disposal by hand and foot. He improved his fitness dramatically across the 2017 season to earn promotion from

the WAFL Colts to impress with Claremont’s reserves. Joel Garner is another who is composed with the ball in his hands and distributes it well on his preferred left foot. He captained Vic Metro to the 2017 NAB AFL Under-18 Championship, earning AllAustralian honours in the process. Dom Barry is a mature-aged draftee who’s earned a second chance at AFL level having played five games for the Demons in 2014. Barry caught the attention of recruiters playing with Glenelg in the SANFL in 2017.
