PAFC Power to end Hunger

THE ISSUE Australia is called “the lucky country”, but that’s far from reality for the thousands of people who go hungry. They are the homeless, the mentally and physically disabled, Indigenous Australians, new arrivals and – increasingly – the working poor, especially families with young children. These are people without the resources to adequately feed themselves or their dependants. • 130,000 South Australians needed food relief in 2011 • 5000 children in SA/NT go to school hungry • 8000 people are homeless • And the demand is only growing But together we have The Power to End Hunger

THE SOLUTION Foodbank – Australia’s largest food relief agency – and the Port Adelaide Football Club have formed a partnership unique in Australian sport. They have combined to form The Power to End Hunger, with three key objectives: • To raise awareness of the increasing problem of hunger in our community • To profile the work of Foodbank in supplying food to those who otherwise would go without • To raise financial support that will help the club to assist Foodbank as it strives to meet demand double what it is currently able to reach

“Being hungry is a frightening experience. Being hungry means that you can’t make the right decisions about what to do, how to feed your kids. There is a sense of hopelessness that comes with that. Being hungry is one thing. Not knowing where your next meal comes from is another thing. And that sense of hopelessness that comes with that is a very frightening experience.” Richard Pagliaro, Foodbank CEO

FOODBANK Foodbank was founded in Australia in 1992 and has been operating in SA since 2000. Foodbank sources, warehouses and distributes food to more than 600 community groups, welfare organisations and charities that in turn help to feed the thousands of South Australians who rely on food relief. In 12 years since establishing its presence in Adelaide, Foodbank has sourced and distributed almost 10 million kilograms of food – enough for almost 20 million meals. In 2011/12, Foodbank expects to distribute 1.7 million kilograms of food, enough for 3.4m meals. And still it believes it meets only half of the demand that exists in our community.

“We see families who don’t know what they’ll eat next and don’t know when they’ll eat next. Foodbank helps us to overcome that issue. Foodbank does an amazing job in supporting hundreds of community organisations just like time for kids. Without them we couldn’t help half the families that we currently do.” Jo Wickes, Time For Kids CEO

THE POWER TO END HUNGER Foodbank and the Port Adelaide Football Club have come together to ensure hunger is no longer a “hidden” problem by giving us ALL The Power to End Hunger. Under this unique partnership, Foodbank is a Joint Major Partner of the Port Adelaide Football Club in the AFL. The Foodbank name – and most importantly our shared mission to End Hunger – is emblazoned on the Power guernsey as we compete in Australia’s most exciting and popular national sporting competition. Thousands of spectators and television viewers are made aware of the challenge every week. Importantly, they also learn about the work of Foodbank and the far greater solution it could offer if it had more financial support.

“If you’re hungry that can have a very serious effect on your life and that’s why Foodbank is such an incredibly important organisation because it helps to feed all those people, not just young people, but all those hundreds of thousands of people around Australia who sadly go hungry during the day. Port Adelaide is a great community club and it’s just demonstrating that today through its commitment to this campaign.” Jay Weatherill, Premier of SA, Launch of The Power To End Hunger, 15 March 2011

THE PORT ADELAIDE FOOTBALL CLUB As a football club that has existed since 1870 and one with deep connections to the wider community, Port Adelaide is proud to have Foodbank as a Joint Major Partner. We are honoured to be able to highlight the role Foodbank plays in every Australian state and territory, with the support of its donors and through literally hundreds of agencies at the front line of feeding the hungry. The Power To End Hunger allows Port Adelaide to use its profile to spotlight this amazing agency and our common goal of Ending Hunger. In doing so, we are raising financial support - the net proceeds of which we are sharing with Foodbank. This unique approach allows Foodbank to reach into a new sources of financial support which also allows the Port Adelaide Football Club to sustain The Power To End Hunger.

“Foodbank does really meaningful work in the community in relieving hunger. We can help them do that. With the reach of our brand and the national stage on which we play, we are able to bring corporate partners together with Foodbank to make a real difference while also raising public awareness of the issue. Keith Thomas, Port Adelaide Football Club CEO

HOW YOU CAN HELP In addition to assembling a line-up of Principal and Support Partners for The Power to End Hunger, we are also bringing together the FRIENDS OF FOODBANK. Your relatively modest contribution can make an enormous difference. Foodbank has spent the past two decades making such gestures go a very, very long way through initiatives like school breakfast programs that nourish hungry children and their classmates, ensuring positive educational outcomes. By becoming a Friend of Foodbank, you too can help to End Hunger. Because Foodbank has most of its food donated, it is able to supply a meaningful and nutritious breakfast for each child for just 25 cents. So your $3000 contribution will supply 12,000 breakfasts or enough to feed 50 children in one school for an entire year. There can be no better cause. You will receive a commemorative certificate acknowledging you and/or your company as a Friend of Foodbank and a provider of a school breakfast program. But most importantly, as a Friend of Foodbank, you will know – and can proudly state – that you are helping to End Hunger.

YOUR $3000 DONATION WILL PROVIDE 12,000 BREAKFASTS AND SUPPLY AN ENTIRE SCHOOL FOR A YEAR.

“Our breakfast program is used to support children who don’t have food and otherwise would go hungry. Previously children often wouldn’t come to school if there wasn’t food at home, so we have noticed the big difference the breakfast program has made. Children do not learn or behave well when they are hungry.” Augusta Park Primary School, Port Augusta

BECOME A FRIEND OF FOODBANK “This unique partnership with the Port Adelaide Football Club will provide critical funding to help us grow our programs moving forward. Beyond that, it will raise awareness of Foodbank and the work we do within a much greater audience – and that will be invaluable. Port Adelaide has developed a brilliant initiative which will provide further support for Foodbank in its End Hunger programs.” Stephen Gerlach AM, Foodbank Chairman

“As AFL players we know the importance of nutrition to getting the best out of ourselves. No-one can function properly if they’re hungry, and it’s shocking to know how many people in our society do go without. As a team, we are proud to wear the End Hunger message when we go into battle every week, taking this great cause to the wider community.” Domenic Cassisi, Port Adelaide Football Club captain and Foodbank Ambassador
