PORT ADELAIDE FOOTBALL CLUB YEARBOOK 2018 3
DAVID 2018 C H A I R M A N’S R E P O RT
2018 was tough on us all. From the Board through to the playing group, from our corporate partners to our Members, it was a difficult season. Again, for the second year in a row, it felt like we didn’t get reward for our effort. So close, yet so far.
staff, volunteers and Board – celebrate the wins together and, in turn, endure the losses together.
And that is the nature of this competition. We operate in a brutal competition. The difference between 12th and 3rd this year was just 2 games. In 2014 the difference between 4th and 13th was 7 games. Today the competition is just so close.
We are all in this together and an underperforming season means the whole club has underperformed, not just the football department.
Some clubs are satisfied with what is referred to as a “winning season” – 12 wins and 10 losses. We’re not. For us this result is simply unacceptable when it means you fail to meet your first expectation of qualifying for finals. This year Collingwood was in the grand final but last year finished 13th. The previous year Richmond won the Grand Final but the year before it was 13th. Clubs which hang together, constantly improve and work on building the best culture to succeed, work their way to the top. Not for one moment though is this season’s failure just a football problem. Our entire club – players, coaches,
Good teams win games, great organisations win premierships. That is why we conducted a total review of the entire Port Adelaide organisation, from the Board and executive team right the way through, to make sure we have the best people, with the right attitude to succeed. I believe culture eats strategy any day. Yes, you need skills, yes, you need a strategy, but it’s culture which makes them sing. With this in mind I reiterate that our club has enormous faith in the people we have in place. But change within the club was still inevitable to move forward. Hard decisions had to be made to be elite. We have changed the mix around Ken in the coaches’ box. At the completion of last season we welcomed Jarrad
4 PORT ADELAIDE FOOTBALL CLUB YEARBOOK 2018
Schofield and Brett Montgomery back to the club. Jarrad and Brett were, of course, part of our 2004 Premiership team. They are Port Adelaide men, they know what we stand for. Across the trade period and draft we welcomed 11 new players in total. Along with the coaches they bring new ideas, new voices and new attitudes. There is a real freshness around the place. From a Board perspective, we welcomed Darren Cahill in December. Darren will be a huge asset for our club and provides a new skillset to our Board. Aside from the fact he bleeds black, white and teal, his experience relating to high performance and athlete development in global sport is a major coup for us. Likewise, from a club executive perspective, Matthew Richardson has been elevated to the position of Executive – General Manager, directly assisting CEO Keith Thomas with day-to-day operations of the club. Richo is also a great
Port Adelaide person who has been involved with the club at SANFL and AFL level for nearly two decades. We have always placed a high premium on club culture, where we aim to create an environment which feels connected by a set of values and standards that everyone associated with us understands and is committed to. Once you fill the place with people who absolutely buy into the idea that if you want to be part of this great club you must invest yourself with energy and passion every day to live these values, then you’ve got something very powerful. All the truly great sporting organisations around the world understand the power of having a set of values and standards
GOOD TEAMS WIN GAMES, GREAT ORGANISATIONS WIN PREMIERSHIPS.
that are simply non-negotiable. And that means non-negotiable for everyone. No exceptions. Achieving this will be a very high priority for our club this coming season. We are a club that continually strives to improve. We need continuous improvement in this competition because standing still actually means you go backwards. We are here to win premierships in both the SANFL and AFL. In the SANFL, the restrictions placed on the Magpies have been enormous. With the SANFL Commission approving rule changes in October in relation to our capacity to better retain and attract contracted players to our League team, along with
concessions relating to our Next Generation Academy players, the club has decided we will not field a team in the SANFL Reserves competition moving forward. This was a decision not taken lightly and it was made only after much consideration. It’s important to remember that a lot has changed since the unification of Port Adelaide’s football programs at both AFL and SANFL level in 2014. Since our proposal at the end of 2013, we now have a functional junior program with the AFL’s Next Generation Academies that effectively has taken the role of the SANFL reserves team and has helped us deliver talented juniors such as Kai Pudney and Martin Frederick in November’s Draft, and Father-
Son players Jackson Mead and Trent Burgoyne in the shortterm future. That aside, it has still been a very difficult decision. I thank everyone who was involved in our SANFL Reserves structure this year, from players to coaches to staff and volunteers. Despite our obvious restrictions and constraints, not for one moment did you complain or shirk the responsibility. You were involved because you wanted to be part of Port Adelaide and you all gave your heart and soul across the entire season, despite our challenges on-field. You are credit to yourselves, your family and the Port Adelaide Football Club. Thanks again and remember you are forever a part of our football
club regardless of where your football might now take you. Despite the challenging season, I thank everyone at the club for their efforts this year. To Keith Thomas and his executive team, all our off-field staff, players and coaches, thanks for your sustained commitment. In particular, massive thanks to all the volunteers who commit so much to this club out of loyalty and passion. We celebrated our volunteers at an event in the Port Club in December. Our volunteers don’t have to help, but they do, and for that I am extremely grateful. The Port Adelaide Board is part of that volunteer group and I personally want to thank them for their support and guidance.
PORT ADELAIDE FOOTBALL CLUB YEARBOOK 2018 5
I wish departing players, coaches and staff all the very best for the future. Remember, you are all always welcome here at Port Adelaide. In particular I reserve special praise for two outstanding young men… outgoing captain of the Magpies Steven Summerton who retired at season’s end after 13 seasons and 226 games for his beloved black-and-white, and Travis Boak who stepped aside from being our AFL club captain in November. Summo, who was a local Port Adelaide product and progressed through the club’s junior ranks, epitomises everything that is Port Adelaide. He was brave, tough and undeniably loyal to the club he grew up loving. As you close a magnificent chapter in your playing career Summo, rest assured you retire as a much loved and respected champion of our club who will always be remembered as a true Magpie. Trav stood by us when the club needed him most. At the end of 2012, he could so easily have headed home to be closer to his family and play with Geelong. No one would have begrudged him that. But Trav stayed loyal to us here at Port Adelaide, to the club he refers to as his other family. Through his actions over the last six seasons Trav has epitomised everything that makes an incredible leader – loyalty, commitment, courage, skill, determination and care. He steps aside as our longest serving AFL captain and he should be proud of where he has taken our resurgent playing group and football club. Trav has plenty of good footy ahead of him and I’m looking forward to him running around in no.10 for many more years to come. From a financial perspective we posted a net profit from continuing operations of $322,013.
Whilst revenue from continuing operations increased by $1.093m (2%), profit from continuing operations decreased by $677,000 compared to the prior year, with the club continuing to prioritise football department spend. Despite the extra support from Parmalat through their OAK Plus brand, not having a second joint major was telling. The great news is that positive momentum is now building off-field too. From a commercial sense, we recently announced global giant GFG Alliance as our new joint major partner for the next five years. GFG was founded by Sanjeev Gupta and his father PK Gupta and have been prominent in South Australia over the last 18 months through their acquisition of the Whyalla steelworks. We have been in discussions with Sanjeev and his team for several months and we are delighted to be partnering with such a reputable brand that shares our values around community, people and family. Like Port Adelaide, GFG push the boundaries in pursuit of success, forever challenging the status quo and seeking opportunities to innovate, adapt and involve. Through this partnership we will have a significant presence in Whyalla and the Eyre Peninsula, the heartland we share with GFG. Late last year we also entered into an exciting new Premier Partnership with Starfish Development. Starfish is currently in the process of developing Port Adelaide’s Dock One, setting up a new community featuring 750 homes, a dockside piazza and boardwalk. To partner with a likeminded organisation such as Starfish, who is ambitious
6 PORT ADELAIDE FOOTBALL CLUB YEARBOOK 2018
and enthusiastic about the redevelopment of the Port Adelaide district, is something we are also very proud of. In partnership with Starfish, we will look to promote the benefits of our heartland at every opportunity. As we have always maintained, for every step we take on a global stage, we are committed to doubling down in our heartland whether that be on the Eyre Peninsula with GFG or in Port Adelaide with Dock One. As we approach our 150th anniversary in 2020 we will announce a range of other initiatives that will have a positive impact on our local heartland. From a China perspective, our club expertly executed our second game in Shanghai this year, which is no mean feat. In 2019, we will build on this momentum as we partner St Kilda, a traditional Victorian club with a loyal membership base and who understands the commercial benefits of China as much as we do. To that end, we have continued to underpin our Chinese commercial relationships with Shanghai Cred Real Estate and most recently, the Jincheng Group. Like our partnership with Shanghai Cred, our agreement with the Jincheng Group is a non-traditional sponsorship, but will be a game-changer for our club and the education sector here in Australia. Stay tuned for more exciting developments involving this partnership in 2019. From a Membership perspective, we experienced our fifth consecutive year of growth in 2018 and we are tracking toward another record-breaking year in 2019 as we strive to achieve a Membership base of 65,000. On behalf of the club, I acknowledge and thank our loyal Members, supporters, corporate and community partners who are the lifeblood of our organisation.
We are fortunate to have one of the most passionate and committed communities in world sport and we know you demand high standards. We are committed to delivering against those expectations and it is what drives us every day. In conclusion, my wish for 2019 is to bring the fun back into footy. Yes, losses hurt. A lot. But footy is about having fun with family and friends. Let’s all have some fun in 2019. Let’s laugh and cheer together. Let’s embrace the positivity of football. We have the greatest game on earth and it should be celebrated. Rest assured though we know what winning means to you all. It means the same to me. Whether it’s TV ratings, business success, reforming the organ transplant system or football. I’m here to win a bloody premiership. Winning means a helluva lot to me as well. Make no mistake. Our history of success has forever been based on unity. We are all part of the Port Adelaide family, the Port Adelaide story, the Port Adelaide Football Club. The journey won’t be easy. It never is. Nothing worth fighting for is easy. But what I know about this club and its community is that we are up for the fight. And let’s have some fun along the way. We are Port Adelaide. We always have been, always will be.
KEITH C EO R E P O RT
What a rollercoaster of a season 2018 was. A positive off-season, a solid first two thirds of the football season and a disappointing end. And the last three months have seen us build some real momentum both on and off field into 2019. We farewelled Chad Wingard, Jared Polec, Jasper Pittard and Jack Hombsch to other AFL clubs. As sad as it felt, I hope they all find happiness and continued success in their football careers.
Premiership band is back together and that is great for our current playing group. Already each one of our new coaches has made a real impact and we look forward to what they’ll continue to bring as we head into 2019 and beyond. And of course, very soon we will announce our new leadership team for 2019. I want to put on public record again my admiration of Travis and what he achieved as the longest serving AFL captain of our great club.
Likewise, I wish delisted players Jake Neade, Dom Barry, Will Snelling, Jimmy Toumpas and Emmanuel Irra, along with retiree Lindsay Thomas, all the best in the future.
His leadership legacy began at the end of 2012, a most tumultuous year for our club.
These are all good young men, who have served our club well, operating in a system which is being increasingly designed to encourage player movement.
We won just five games for the year and arguably our best player, Robbie Gray, was struck down with a season-ending knee reconstruction.
In the off-season we have welcomed 11 new players. We are very excited with what our new recruits and draftees will bring to the club. They are all talented and have great character and we are looking forward to them forging successful careers with Port Adelaide. As for the coaching group, how good is it to have some Port Adelaide premiership flavour return to the club with Brett Montgomery, Jarrad Schofield and Dean Brogan back in the fold? Along with Chad Cornes (development coach) and Michael Wilson (physiotherapist) the 2004
We lost a coach, a president and a mate in John McCarthy.
And whilst faint signs were appearing that a resurgence may be possible, leadership was absolutely essential. Through all the gloom, no statement resonated more in 2012 than the emergence of Travis as a leader of our club. Whilst he would not officially accept the famous No 1 guernsey until the start of 2013, it was Travis’s decision to resist the temptations of the Geelong Football Club that helped lay the foundation for the spirited revival that was to come. History will record that Matthew Primus and our club parted ways
PORT ADELAIDE FOOTBALL CLUB YEARBOOK 2018 7
toward the end of 2012 but to Travis’s eternal credit, he saw in his mates and perhaps the club itself, a steely resolve to improve.
Port Adelaide is nothing without its community of members. You are the lifeblood of our club, the foundation on which it is built.
The Hinkley/Boak era had arrived and would come to life in spectacular fashion at the new Adelaide Oval in 2014, another truly historic moment for our club.
Again, we will bring our community together on the eve of the season in February through our inner-sanctum Member Convention and our Season Launch/Hall of Fame event.
Travis still has plenty of great footy ahead of him, and as Dom Cassisi did for him, he will transition our new leaders in with poise and style.
In terms of international growth, our China strategy continues to expand.
He will effortlessly pass down all of the traits that have made him an outstanding captain during an incredible period of resurgence and growth.
In October we announced that St Kilda will be our new opponent for Shanghai 2019. This is significant for a number of reasons.
We should all be very proud of him.
Firstly, it means we are returning to Shanghai for the third straight year. An achievement in itself.
Our entire playing group and coaches wrapped up the first part of our pre-season campaign with a gruelling six-day camp in the heat and humidity of Queensland’s Noosa Heads.
St Kilda’s commitment, and that of the Victorian Government, for three years provides the confidence and security that an event of this magnitude requires.
The camp enabled the group to put together a significant block of training, while at the same time working on team connection, with so many new players in the group. It was a resounding success and I anticipate the impact and learnings from this camp will be felt right throughout season 2019. And the connection between former Port Adelaide greats and the club continues to grow. How good was it to see former premiership defender Roger Delaney meeting the team in Noosa and his children running water for our players? And then seeing Matty Primus return to the club he loves to talk to our playing and coaching group about resilience, staying the course and taking your opportunities. No one knows that more than Matty. From an off-field perspective momentum continues to build as well. Thanks to our incredible members we are on track for our sixth consecutive year of membership growth as we aim to break the 65,000 barrier.
It will mean that AFL will be played in mainland China for a minimum of five years, a feat not replicated by any other major sporting code outside of China. And last month we announced a long-term, game-changing partnership with the Jincheng Group, a real estate, health and education group headquartered in China’s Zhejiang Province. Our partnership with Jincheng will see both organisations working together to deliver significant educational outcomes for Chinese students here in Australia which will be worth tens of millions of dollars to the local economy. This agreement with Jincheng is not a standard sport sponsorship, but it does reflect our desire to always search for meaningful ways to maximise the club’s ability to encourage positive community outcomes. At big moments like this, I think it’s worth reflecting on why we have decided to pursue this China dream. It’s all about growth. Meaningful growth.
8 PORT ADELAIDE FOOTBALL CLUB YEARBOOK 2018
Make no mistake, we are on the cusp of something special. Growth that comes from really embracing a new community, with all its cultural differences, as they do the same to us. It takes time, but the rewards can be enormous. The Jincheng announcement along with Mr Gui and Shanghai Cred’s five-year extension of our partnership earlier this year is living proof that this philosophy works, and we continue to enjoy a wonderful relationship with these stakeholders. Any club with aspirations to be in the finals and shooting for premierships every year, simply must have the resources to compete at the highest level. Success in China will provide us with these opportunities. But with every step we take in China we are committed to doubling down here in our own community, our own heartland of Port Adelaide. That is why our recent partnership announcement with Starfish Developments is so significant. Starfish Developments, through its Dock One development, will continue the rejuvenation of the Port with a master-planned community of 750 homes, a dockside piazza and boardwalk to
be launched in early 2019. How exciting is that? This investment in our backyard is significant for our district, the district we are so proud of and committed to. We look forward to walking lockstep with Starfish as we partner in promoting all the benefits of the Port moving forward. Very soon, at the time of writing this report, we will be announcing a joint major partner to join OAK in supporting our club in 2019 and beyond. We will partner with another significant investor in South Australia which we are very excited about. The benefits of this partnership will be wide-reaching across our state. Stay tuned. In conclusion, our club is all about looking forward at what is on the horizon. The breadth of opportunities ahead of us are enormous. Make no mistake, we are on the cusp of something special. I can’t wait to see you at the club or at the footy in 2019.
COMMUNITY 2018 has been the biggest year yet for Power Community Ltd, having engagement with its youth, Aboriginal, multicultural and female programs reaching record levels. There were more than 70,000 engagements with PCL’s programs in 2018, up from more than 61,000 in 2017. PCL’s dedication to reaching communities far and wide has seen its staff travel more than 150,000 kilometres, or the equivalent of more than four times around the world, from the community camp on the Yorke Peninsula to the far West Coast for the Aboriginal Power Cup, the APY Lands and the Barkley region for WillPOWER and Darwin for the Power to be Positive program. The Aboriginal Power Cup was so big in its eleventh year that the annual carnival had to be moved away from Alberton Oval to EP Nazar Reserve at Ethelton for the first time, with 450 students from 70 different schools involved. With 96% year 12 attainment by 2017 participants, the Aboriginal Programs team is targeting 100% completion in the near future. As well as increasing in size, PCL’s programs are achieving significant results. As a snapshot, the Community Youth Program has visited 100 schools across the state, and 150 students from Empowering Youth have graduated. In its second year, the Power Intercultural Program engaged with students from more than 200 different cultures and for the first time, a participant was
chosen to become the football club’s CEO for a day. Year 10 student Zaahra al-Sarraf, a 15-year-old from Pinnacle College, took charge for a day in June, having also taken part in the program and football carnival at Alberton Oval. The transition to employment program Powerful Futures has now placed 189 school leavers and other young men and women who have taken part in PCL programs into further education or employment over the past 24 months.
70,000+ engagements with PCL’s PROGRAMS in 2018
Research by Flinders University, released in December, showed the Power to End Violence Against Women program was having a material impact in inspiring high school students to challenge the ideals of masculinity and gender-based attitudes and behaviours, as well as teaching them about respectful relationships. The program was also recognised by the Federal Government as a role model for other community organisations with a special video made about its work as part of the Stop It At The Start campaign. The men’s Aboriginal AFL Academy continued to achieve significant results both on and off the field. Unbeaten in six games in 2018, the boys then had an extraordinary cultural
experience after travelling to the Garma Festival in Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory. In 2018 the Women’s Aboriginal AFL Academy was launched, providing an educational and cultural opportunity as well as a football pathway for talented young Indigenous women. The girls won all but one game in 2018, only losing to a New Zealand representative side during a life-changing trip across the ditch. PCL never stands still and it has now also introduced Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) specific programs to coexist within our
other programs. It will also run the Power of STEM program which presents students with pathways into the jobs of the future by linking them with organisations and people in those fields. This was trialled at one school and will expand further in 2019. To cap a remarkable year, Power player Justin Westhoff was nominated for the Jim Stynes Community Leadership Award for his work with homeless and underprivileged people and for teaching children about sustainable eating. He was among four finalists for the award, which in itself is a fantastic achievement. PCL is incredibly proud of its programs and it thanks its partners for their support during the year. 2019 is shaping as yet another exciting year of making our community proud.
PORT ADELAIDE FOOTBALL CLUB YEARBOOK 2018 9
CHINA Following two years of incredible progress, 2018 was a year of consolidation with respect to Port Adelaide’s engagement in the People’s Republic of China. The second match played in China demonstrated Port Adelaide’s – and increasingly the AFL’s – commitment to the expansion of our sport into China. A challenging geostrategic context notwithstanding, Port Adelaide further tested and confirmed the pillars of its China strategy: • high-level partnership with Chinese businesses, • sport and education programs in Australia and China, and • annual match in China.
HIGH-LEVEL PARTNERSHIP WITH CHINESE BUSINESSES This was the third year in the historic three-year agreement with Shanghai CRED. Establishing partnerships with significant Chinese businesses that are active in Australia remains a foundation stone of our strategy, so it was pleasing to announce the five-year extension of our partnership on the eve of the Shanghai match in May. This prolongs the CRED-PAFC partnership to 2023, which is an exceptionally strong foundation from which we can build a significant and enduring presence in China. The strength of this relationship must be credited to our CEO Keith Thomas and Executive Partnership Manager Xu Nuo, who worked tirelessly over the initial three-year agreement. In 2019, we also saw the elevation of Haneco Lighting to Premier Partner of the club. This is another strong partnership, based on shared vision and mutual trust. Haneco Lightning, and its charismatic chairman and long-time resident of Adelaide Nicho Teng, started as a member of the China Power Club before
10 PORT ADELAIDE FOOTBALL CLUB YEARBOOK 2018
increasing their investment level. Haneco Lighting will continue as a Premier Partner in 2019. There was a significant amount of work done, over the course of the year, to build a strong pipeline. The fruit of this labour will be born in 2019. A sign of things to come is the initial agreement with Jincheng Group, a significant business based in Hangzhou. I hope you will be hearing a lot more about this partnership in 2019! SPORT AND EDUCATION PROGRAMS Port Adelaide has worked for three years to develop programs for Chinese students. We believe that sport complements a student’s academic goals. Our sport, in particular, can also break down barriers and enhance intercultural understanding. In 2018, the Power Footy program, delivered in schools in China, was consolidated. A new program, International Student Program, designed to enhance the experience of Chinese students in Australia, was also developed and will be launched in early 2019. International education is a
significant economic sector in Australia, and Port Adelaide has a contribution to make. Critical to these efforts is the partnership with The University of Adelaide. A three-year agreement was signed in 2018, which ensues a cooperative model between Port Adelaide and The University’s Faculty of Professions. The University of Adelaide relationship will help us build a bridge between our programs in China and Australia, so Port Adelaide can participate in the full cycle of a student looking to study in Adelaide: to develop a better understanding before arrival, to transition the student to Adelaide, and then enhance the experience while they study in Adelaide. MATCH IN SHANGHAI, 19 MAY 2018 The second match in China consolidated the position of this concept as a regular feature of the AFL calendar. The great (and perhaps unexpected) success of the inaugural match in 2017 raised expectations which proved difficult to surpass. Inclement and unpredictable weather (it was 35 degrees and humid the day prior to the game, with
tempestuous storms on game day), a repeated fixture, and the challenging economics of asking supporters to travel to China on an annual basis were undeniable challenges. The operation of the game, however, was brilliantly executed. Port Adelaide CFO Shane Smith, in particular, did a fantastic job but the entire Port Adelaide and AFL working group completed some exceptional work in consolidating a nascent concept in 2017 into a smooth operation that augers well for future games. And most importantly, the team preserved our unbeaten record on Chinese soil! The China team thanks the football department for their assistance in this unique game. A great deal of work was done in 2018, the results of which will be evident in 2019. The China Engagement Department thanks CEO Keith Thomas, Chairman David Koch, all directors and members for their support in 2018.

We learned some brutal lessons in 2018 and to get better we can’t ignore them. We undertook a significant review of our football department and game plan and we are getting on with the task of making ourselves better. But you cannot achieve much by looking back, you have to keep looking forward and embracing the next challenge. In this high-performance industry, success involves an unrelenting pursuit of improvement and you cannot do that without change. We have made changes to the way we operate and we have seen significant personnel changes both on and off the field. We’ve farewelled Dom Barry, Jake Neade, Jared Polec, Jasper Pittard, Jack Hombsch, Chad Wingard, Will Snelling, Jimmy Toumpas, Lindsay Thomas and Emmanuel Irra from our playing list, while we have also had to say goodbye to Matthew Nicks, Brendon Lade, Aaron Greaves and others from our football department and administration. But we have also brought a host of new faces to the club,
providing a fresh atmosphere and some unique experience and knowledge. We have welcomed back to Alberton premiership players Dean Brogan, Jarrad Schofield and Brett Montgomery to freshen up our coaching team and we have also brought in some new players. We have strengthened our list for now and the for future, and there is a lot of optimism. Port Adelaide junior Scott Lycett has returned home from Perth during the trade period, while fellow South Australians Ryan Burton and Sam Mayes also joined the club. We planned on attacking the 2018 draft to capitalise on a strong talent pool and we brought in Connor Rozee, Zak Butters, Xavier Duursma, Riley Grundy and Boyd Woodcock, before taking Tobin Cox, Martin Frederick and Kai Pudney in the rookie draft. We want to be a club that’s capable of winning premierships and to do that you have to be brave with your decisionmaking and your selections.
16 PORT ADELAIDE FOOTBALL CLUB YEARBOOK 2018
We have strengthened our list for now and for the future, and there is a lot of optimism.
We think we have done that and we are excited about what the future holds. The rise of the Western Bulldogs, Richmond and Collingwood in recent years shows that things can turn around very quickly, and there is no reason Port Adelaide cannot achieve the ultimate success in 2019.

PORT ADELAIDE FOOTBALL CLUB YEARBOOK 2018 37
MATTHEW SA N F L S E N I O R COAC H
2019 is shaping to be an exciting season for Port Adelaide at SANFL level. It was disappointing the way we finished off last season but there is plenty to take away and plenty of upside in the team. Although results didn’t go our way, players showed development across the year and gained valuable experience. We had a young group with most of the AFL listed boys never having played senior league football before. Add to that a relatively inexperienced contracted list and some of the performances we put in were impressive. Our biggest problem was consistency, both in-game and from game-to-game. We simply were not able to perform at the required level for long enough in enough games. 2019 sees some significant changes both on and off the field for our club. This year we will not have a reserves side, after a change in SANFL rules regarding our involvement in the competition. That means we are limited in the number of contracted players we can have. We have farewelled Jack Kluske, Michael Ortiz, Darcy Ginever and Harrison Morgan along with
our inspirational captain Steven Summerton who has retired after more than 200 games. I was fortunate to both play with and coach Steven and he is unquestionably one of the most skilful, loyal and passionate Port Adelaide people I have ever come across. In his place we have recruited Cam Sutcliffe, who has played more than 100 AFL games for Fremantle, as our leadership player. He is a brilliant player and person and knows the history of this great club. We also welcome Matt Appleton from North Adelaide, Jack Elsworthy from the Eagles and Dallas Hill who formerly played for Central District. Former Port Adelaide players Tom Corcoran and Adam Mahney are also back after they played elsewhere in 2018. Playing for the Port Adelaide Football Club is a privilege and I know our new faces will respect that honour in the way they carry themselves each week on the field. The club has drafted some quality young talent, which I am excited to get to work with as they begin their push for AFL football. At Port Adelaide we expect to win and with the right attitude and effort we will.

Justin Westhoff was a popular winner when he was awarded the John Cahill Medal as Port Adelaide’s 2018 Best and Fairest in October. The 32-year-old polled 179 votes to finish 17 clear of joint runners up Tom Jonas and Ollie Wines. He had trailed them heading into the final game of the season but polled 20 of a maximum 25 votes to claim his first John Cahill Medal in front of more than 1000 people at the Adelaide Convention Centre. Westhoff is the fifteenth player to win the medal since Darren Mead’s inaugural accomplishment in 1997 and the oldest to ever claim the award. The oldest player on the Power’s list polled in 20 of the side’s 22 games including three best on ground performances, showing remarkable consistency during the 2018 campaign. “After 12 years you get on and to be still around and still be relevant in the game and to be standing up here at the moment is pretty humbling,” Westhoff said to cheers of “Hoff” from a raucous crowd.
“To shake Jack’s (John Cahill’s) hand and join guys like Robbie Gray and legends of the club is truly an honour. “It’s a bit of a shock to be honest. I’ve been in the game for 12 years and I’ve finally done something with my career so that’s nice. “The longer you’re in the game, the harder it is and you just want to still be relevant within your club and to contribute. “I feel like I’ve done that… and hopefully going forward I can do that again and win the ultimate thing for the club, that’s the ultimate goal with anything you do. “I would trade this in a second for a premiership with the guys we’ve got playing. “But it’s a nice feeling to be standing here and to still be contributing to your club at this age, which is amazing to be honest.” The award capped a wonderful season for the veteran utility who also signed a one-year contract extension to play on in 2019. Joining Westhoff, Jonas and Wines in the top five vote getters were Robbie Gray and Jared Polec.

IT’s BEEN A GOOD YEAR FOR ME, I’ve GAINED A Lot of COnfidence
B E S T A N D FA I R E S T - SA N F L
It was a bitter sweet 2018 season for consistent midfielder Will Snelling, who was awarded the A.R. McLean Medal as Port Adelaide’s best and fairest in the SANFL but then delisted. Snelling finished 21 votes clear of runner-up Jack Trengove and 38 ahead of third-placed Jimmy Toumpas. The 21-year-old polled votes in 15 of the Magpies’ 18 games, including two best on ground performances, to claim his first A.R McLean Medal in front of more than a thousand people at the Adelaide Convention Centre in October. Snelling was also the club’s best vote getter at the Magarey Medal count after being one of just four players to feature for the Magpies in all 18 SANFL games in 2018. “It’s been a good year for me, I’ve gained a lot of confidence through my performances,” he said.
Joining Snelling, Trengove and Toumpas in the top five vote-getters were retiring captain Steven Summerton and ruckman Billy Frampton. Snelling also won the Fos Williams Memorial Trophy as the most dedicated player, capping a strong season. While he was later delisted after three seasons at Alberton, he has not given up hope on his AFL dream. A highly touted junior, Snelling was picked up in the 2015 Rookie Draft, immediately after winning the 2015 SANFL Premiership with West Adelaide. The rookie forced his way into the AFL side, making his debut in the last round of the 2016 season but struggled for opportunity after that. The club has thanked Snelling for his commitment and service and wishes him and his family well for the future.
“I’m still at a young age so I think I’ve still got a lot ahead of me. “It’s a huge honour to win this award and I wouldn’t be up here without a lot of key people in my life – it’s a culmination of all of their work.”

PORT ADELAIDE FOOTBALL CLUB YEARBOOK 2018 95
VALE He was the gentle giant affectionately nicknamed “the Bear”, a versatile utility player whose decision to retire in his prime after the droughtbreaking 1977 premiership caught most people off guard, but to Port Adelaide legend Russell Ebert he was just a mate who could have been anything. Randall Gerlach’s passing in September came after more than 40 years of enduring the effects of a debilitating kidney condition. The 65-year-old played 110 games for Port Adelaide between 1971 and 1977, primarily as a key forward, but as Ebert remembers, he flourished in just about any position. “Randall was a very very strong mark, and a very good kick and so he could play back pocket, he could play across the half back line and he could play across the half forward line or full forward line,” he recalled. “He was very flexible and adaptable and could even be a key position player or he could play a support role. “He was a terrific asset to have because he could play anywhere across the ground, even in the ruck because of his size.” In 1976 Gerlach was the club’s leading goal kicker with 90 goals as his condition emerged. Against medical advice he played on in 1977, playing a key
role as the club broke a 12-year premiership drought. “He was a very good player. He was not of good health in 1976 but we had had such a good year but a disappointing finish and he was determined to play on in 77 and we were really pleased that he did. “He played a major part, not only in the finals, but in us getting there.” Reserved and private off the field, Gerlach was well-liked by his teammates and others around the club. Described as “strong-minded, determined and skilful” and a “great bloke to be around” by Ebert, the four-time Magarey Medallist is in no doubt Gerlach would have been a 200-game player for Port Adelaide if not for his illness. “We used to affectionately call him the Bear, I think because he was just a big gentle person but if you riled him, that’s when the big angry bear came out,” Ebert said. “Without those limitations he would have been the best key position player of his time.” Gerlach is the second teammate Ebert lost in 2018 with the passing of Bruce Light in January. Light was remembered for his dynamism and scorching runs during his 216 games and 89

goals for the club. A fan favourite who typified everything Port Adelaide with his selfless and courageous play, Light died aged 68 after a long illness. One of the most popular figures to ever wear a Magpies guernsey, Light thrilled a legion of fans between 1967 and 1978. “Regardless of who you asked – Port Adelaide supporters, fellow teammates or casual observers – Bruce Light would invariably be in the top three for people’s favourite players across his career,” remembered Ebert. “Bruce was different to wingmen of that time. He loved being in the thick of the action and he had the courage to back it up. “But he was also the fastest player I’ve ever seen, which made him very popular with our supporters but not so popular with opposition wingmen.” Light was made a life member of Port Adelaide in 1976 and also played four games for South Australia. Described by Ebert as a great friend and always the first to offer to help, Light will be remembered as a superior footballer and a generous and passionate teacher. “Bruce was all about team success and triumph for the whole club. Along with his teammates, Bruce loved the trainers and volunteers at the
club and always felt a real sense of responsibility toward the entire club and supporter base,” Ebert said. “We’ve lost so many people that we had the good fortune to play with, mix with and socialise with and he is just one of them. “They are all part of the Port Adelaide family and we miss them terribly.”

AFL PROGRAM It was clear at the end of the 2018 season that we had not lived up to our expectations. Finishing 10th was nowhere near what anyone associated with the club wanted and, on that basis, change was our reality. Over the off-season we farewelled key personnel Matthew Nicks, Aaron Greaves and Brendon Lade. Matthew joined the club in 2011, working in various roles including most recently as senior assistant to coach Ken Hinkley. Aaron was the club’s head of football development, while Brendon was forward and ruck coach, having returned to Alberton, where he was part of the 2004 AFL Premiership side, in 2016. Those departures meant we were able to welcome back premiership players Jarrad Schofield, Brett Montgomery and Dean Brogan to work in our coaching team. Jarrad will become midfield coach, Brett will coach our defensive unit and Dean will look after our rucks. Those changes mean Michael Voss, who signed a two-year contract extension in 2018, has become senior assistant coach, while
Nathan Bassett will move from defence into the forward line. We have also extended the contract of Chad Cornes who will continue on as a full-time forwards development coach. SANFL PROGRAM The SANFL Commission’s decision to adjust the rules around the way both Port Adelaide and Adelaide are able to attract players to their SANFL list has strengthened our ability to recruit experienced and talented players. A key part of this is an increase in our base payment salary cap to help retain our contracted Magpies players and a reduction in the age of our leadership player from an AFL list to 26 instead of 28. That has meant we have been able to retain the bulk of our playing list from 2017 and recruit Cam Sutcliffe, who has played more than 100 AFL games for Fremantle, to be our leadership player. Cam is originally a South Australian and played with Woodville-West Torrens before being drafted in 2011. He knows about the history of our club and his leadership and experience will be invaluable for our players. We have also been able to recruit some other players with
104 PORT ADELAIDE FOOTBALL CLUB YEARBOOK 2018
SANFL experience in Matt Appleton, Jack Elsworthy, Dallas Hill, Tom Corcoran and Adam Mahney.
2019 is shaping to be an exciting season for Port Adelaide.
Coach Matthew Lokan is heading into his second season at the helm. As a result of the SANFL rule changes, we made the difficult decision not to continue with our SANFL reserves team for 2019 and beyond. The idea of diminishing our SANFL program was a last resort, but the decision will give us the best possible opportunity to win premierships, which is why we exist. We thank Reserves coach Scott Matthews and his players for their efforts in 2018 and wish them well in the next part of their careers. NEXT GENERATION ACADEMIES With Stuart Cochrane battling illness, we have appointed another former Port Adelaide player in Paul Stewart to work in a dual role as coach of the club’s Next Generation Academy and as part of the club’s Welfare and Development department. Paul played 101 AFL games in 10 seasons with Port Adelaide and, since being delisted at the end of the 2016 season, worked in
community development and with young people. Most recently, while still playing in the SANFL with WoodvilleWest Torrens, he worked as a regional coordinator for the youth homelessness organisation Ladder. Paul’s experience as an AFL player, as well as the associated challenges that came with it, along with his work and study made him the outstanding candidate for the role. In 2018, our under 15 Next Generation Academy featured in the first-ever Showdown involving SANFL-aligned players representing Port Adelaide and Adelaide. The best Under 15s from Norwood, South Adelaide, West Adelaide and the Eagles lined up for our academy while players aligned to the remaining clubs represented the Crows. It is hoped that this will be an annual event.
FATHER/SON ACADEMY Our Father/Son Academy is expected to pay dividends in 2019 when some famous Port Adelaide names are eligible to be drafted. Trent Burgoyne and Jackson Mead – sons of former Power stars Peter Burgoyne and Darren Mead – are eligible to nominate for the 2019 draft. They are training with the club on a semi-regular basis along with Taj Schofield, son of Jarrad Schofield. We will continue to work closely to develop these young men through the work of Paul Stewart.
MULTICULTURAL AND INDIGENOUS ACADEMY This academy started early in 2017, targeting players with African or Asian heritage and Aboriginal players from prescribed remote regions in South Australia. Players have been involved in fortnightly sessions at the club with two members of the Multicultural Academy – Kai Pudney and Martin Frederick selected to play for the victorious South Australian side which took out the Under 18 National Championship. The duo trained with the club in pre-season and we were able to bid upon them in the
rookie draft and claim them as category B rookies. FEMALE TALENT Port Adelaide has been stepping up its talent pathway for female footballers by hosting a group of some of the state’s best under 15 players as part of its Next Generation Academy set-up. 42 girls aligned to the South Adelaide, Norwood, WoodvilleWest Torrens and West Adelaide football clubs have been taking part in weekly sessions at the Allan Scott Power Headquarters at Alberton Oval to show them what it means to be a football professional. Among the sessions have been mindfulness programs, sessions focussed on specific strength and conditioning for females, and skills training, all aimed at teaching the girls about elite standards. The group is being coached by Naomi Maidment, who has been coaching the under 16 boys’ team at West Adelaide for the past five years. Naomi was the outstanding candidate for the job and we are pleased to help her with her own development in an elite environment. LIST MANAGEMENT AND RECRUITMENT We entered the offseason with a clear goal to improve our list and move up the draft order.
Over the past three or four years we realised there would be a strong talent pool in the 2018 AFL National Draft and we positioned ourselves to attack the draft. Much of this involved positioning ourselves as high as possible in the draft order and we used the 2018 trade period to do this, along with recruiting some proven AFL talent. We were delighted that free agent Scott Lycett chose to leave West Coast and nominated us as his preferred club. He is a former Port Adelaide junior, so he knows the club and he will complement our existing ruckmen, while also being able to play as a forward. During the trade period we also secured the services of Ryan Burton from Hawthorn and Sam Mayes from Brisbane – each experienced at AFL level.
Other list changes included the departures of Dom Barry, Jake Neade, Will Snelling, Jimmy Toumpas, Lindsay Thomas and Emmanuel Irra. At November’s draft we achieved our aim of securing the best available young talent. We landed Connor Rozee, Zak Butters, Xavier Duursma, Riley Grundy and Boyd Woodcock, before taking Tobin Cox, Martin Frederick and Kai Pudney in the rookie draft. Despite the changes, the average age of our squad only dropped slightly and the average number of games played by our players dropped by less than one game. We are particularly pleased that we have strengthened and refreshed our list and have been able to secure extra picks late in next year’s draft, which will enable us to make some potential father-son plays.
That they’re each originally from South Australia is a bonus. We also traded up the order to give ourselves three draft picks inside the first round for just the third time in the club’s history. But with that we had to farewell some players as well. Chad Wingard landed at Hawthorn, Jared Polec and Jasper Pittard at North Melbourne and Jack Hombsch at Gold Coast.

“I wasn’t too sure I’d get another opportunity at the top level” BRETT MONTGOMERY PORT ADELAIDE assistant coach Brett Montgomery feels the refreshed coaching group will help bring a new perspective to how the team plays. Montgomery has returned to Alberton, where he played 126 games and was part of the side which won the 2004 AFL Premiership. The 45-year-old has taken over the role of defensive coach with Nathan Bassett moving to become the forward coach. “Obviously to coach at a club that you love and you’ve played for and where you’ve had a huge amount of positive memories, that just makes it that bit more special,” Montgomery said. “I wasn’t too sure I’d get another opportunity at the top level and when CD (Chris Davies) and Ken (Hinkley) came knocking I was thrilled.” Since retiring from playing, Montgomery has worked at Carlton, the Western Bulldogs and most recently as an opposition analyst for Greater Western Sydney.
He said the most recent role, in particular, had sharpened his coaching focus. “I got that opportunity under Brendan McCartney at the Dogs many, many years ago and I really do think it gave my coaching another layer of insight that maybe I wasn’t getting as a line coach,” Montgomery said. “When Leon Cameron asked me to do that job, I was rapt and I knew exactly how to do it – it’s pretty hard yards. Last year alone I had 42 interstate trips.” With premiership teammates Jarrad Schofield and Dean Brogan also joining the coaching group, senior coach Ken Hinkley will have a lot of experience to call upon in 2019.
more specifically, I’m looking at more the team’s defence and how we go about that,” Montgomery said. “I’ve heard Michael Voss and Ken say how the club wants to be bolder in the way we play. Well that relates to the way we defend as well as the way we attack. “We want to get some better looks (at the ball), we want to win it back earlier, and that’s what we want to do.” As well as being back at Alberton, Montgomery is also excited about working with Hinkley, who he said was known to be a good coach.
Montgomery said each will offer a differing perspective. He said while the Power’s defence was a real strength in 2018, he would like to see a better team defence. “My role is to take over the backline and coach them but again, if you drill down

“I’m grateful for the opportunity, the timing was right” DEAN BROGAN DEAN BROGAN did not need a lot of convincing to return to Port Adelaide in late 2018, especially given there was a premiership reunion of sorts underway. With Jarrad Schofield and Brett Montgomery joining Chad Cornes in the coaching group and Michael Wilson working as a club physio, Brogan’s return completed the puzzle. “Having Schoey and Monty and Chad and Wilbur as a physio here now, there’s a really good connection between us and the playing group can see that,” Brogan said. “They probably want that when they get to our age. “We don’t talk about ourselves too much. It’s not about us anymore, it’s about the players but we’re happy when they come up to us and ask questions. “I guess we’re all here to win a Premiership and if we can help by explaining how we went about things then that’s what we’re there for.” Brogan played 174 games for the Power before shifting to New South Wales to become
a playing assistant coach at Greater Western Sydney where he managed another 19 games before retiring to focus on coaching. He left the Giants at the end of 2017 and after a year back in Adelaide, the former basketballer is now back where his football journey started with Port. “I’m grateful for the opportunity, the timing was right,” Brogan said. “I had a year out having come back from the Giants, and talked with Chris (Davies) and Ken (Hinkley) about coming back in a part-time role and it’s been great. “Obviously, there are a lot of new faces coming through the door this year. “The structures are still in place. There’s a couple of old heads still around but from a playing group perspective there’s a lot of young talent coming through and it’s good to work with them.”
season knee reconstruction. With the developing Peter Ladhams and Billy Frampton, 2017 All-Australian Paddy Ryder and 2018 Premiership player Scott Lycett to work with, Brogan is excited at the prospects, hinting that the Power will look to play with two ruckmen. “I think we have to,” he said. “Paddy’s going to play and Charlie (Dixon) will come back from his injury and then we’ve gone out and recruited Scotty Lycett, a premiership ruckman from West Coast. “It’s a challenge for the coaches to make them all fit in and see how that goes but Collingwood and West Coast both played two rucks. “They both played in the Grand Final so the model is there to be implemented. It’s just about does it fit with us? Which I’m sure it will.”
Brogan has a full complement of ruckmen to work with, bar young tall Sam Hayes, who is still working back from a mid-

“It was a fantastic game and I was very fortunate” JARRAD SCHOFIELD PORT ADELAIDE assistant coach Jarrad Schofield admits much has changed at Alberton since he departed as a premiership player in 2004 but being back just feels right. Schofield was a much soughtafter coach within the AFL ranks after guiding Subiaco to five consecutive WAFL grand finals, including three premierships, in his six years at the helm but he says his loyalty to Port Adelaide made it the right decision to come back. “The close relationship I had with the club, obviously being a former premiership player and I spent six years of my career there,” he said. “I just felt also that the way that we finished (at Subiaco) this year, to win all three grades and 12 months ago I felt we had unfinished business after losing the 2017 Grand Final to Peel. “I was just super proud to go through the season undefeated and I had the full backing of my family, my wife and my two
children, so I just saw it as the right time to step forward and take on a new journey.” Schofield spent a week in Adelaide in May when the West Australian state team played South Australia and he was invited into the Power rooms during the memorable Showdown win over Adelaide in Round 8. He said that helped convince him that the Power was the best fit for him. “It was a fantastic game and I was very fortunate that Ken allowed me into the inner sanctum of their line meetings and their match committee and I just spent some time seeing what happens behind closed doors in the AFL ranks,” he said. “It really opened my eyes to be excited about that prospect and I am very thankful that Ken allowed me to do that.
to be a part of it.” Schofield’s son Taj is part of the Port Adelaide Football Club Father-Son Next Generation Academy, and eligible to be drafted in 2020. He said Taj loved the Power but was sensible in understanding there were no guarantees when it came to being drafted. “Being part of the FatherSon Academy, he gets that opportunity to rub shoulders with the boys that are there… it’s very exciting for him. He knows there are no guarantees in life and he’s got to work hard but he’s got a fantastic opportunity over the next two years to put his case forward,” Schofield said. “If he got drafted by Port Adelaide he’d be rapt but at the same time if not, he’ll go anywhere.”
“I could see straight away that the dynamics of the coaching group were strong, the playing group was strong and I wanted

“the fact that i was getting to come home to a club I love, made it better” RYAN BURTON RYAN Burton is excited to land at “the club he loves” and grew up supporting – Port Adelaide - and gearing up for a potential position change. The 21-year-old was initially shocked at being put up for trade by former club Hawthorn but his feelings quickly turned to excitement once he learned Port Adelaide was at the other end of the deal. “I was a bit shocked and shattered…but the fact that I was getting to come home to a club I love, made it better,” he said. “Port was on the other end and it was a club that was always in the back of my mind to go to down the track, and it was a club I grew up loving – so it made it a lot easier.” Burton has supported Port Adelaide since childhood and also spent time training at the club prior to being drafted to Hawthorn in 2015. He’s relishing the opportunity to play alongside some familiar names on the Port Adelaide list and has received plenty of
messages of support from his new teammates. “A couple of the senior boys messaged me, really trying to welcome me to the club…they really wanted me to be a part of it, so that helped me make a decision,” he said. “I grew up loving blokes like Travis Boak and Hamish Hartlett – I’m keen to play with blokes like that, it’s pretty special. “I’ve heard a lot about Tom Jonas as a leader and I’m looking forward to playing down back with the likes of him.”
midfield as a junior, and then as a back for the 40-odd games I’ve played at AFL,” he said. “I’d love to push into the midfield in the next few years, but If I’m required as a defender, I’m happy to fulfil that role.” Burton will wear the number 3 in 2019, a number steeped in tradition, previously worn by numerous club greats including Allan Blagrove, Gavin Wanganeen and new defensive coach Brett Montgomery.
Midfield coach Jarrad Schofield is intent on bolstering Port’s midfield depth and has hinted at a possible addition of Burton to the midfield mix. Despite spending the majority of his career with Hawthorn in defence, Burton says he’s keeping an open mind about his position at Port Adelaide. “I’m happy to play wherever I need to - obviously I was drafted as a forward, I played

“I’m just really enjoying being back at Alberton” SCOTT LYCETT NEW Port Adelaide ruckman Scott Lycett says he’s looking forward to teaming with 2017 All-Australian Paddy Ryder and proving wrong the critics of teams playing with dual ruckmen. Lycett joined the Power during the trade period after being part of the West Coast side which won the AFL premiership in 2018. A Port Adelaide junior who won a reserves premiership with the Magpies in the SANFL in 2010, the 26-year-old says it’s great to be back. “I’m just really enjoying being back at Alberton,” he said during a recent press conference. “It’s just such a rich history of a club and just training at Alberton just feels like a privilege every time you get out there.” Lycett worked with Nic Nautanui and then Nathan Vardy during the Eagles’ premiership success in 2018. At Port he is likely to rotate through the ruck with star big man Paddy Ryder.
“We haven’t really knuckled down on the specifics of what’s going to come next year but I’m sure that will come and I’m looking forward to working with Paddy,” Lycett said. “He’s obviously a great ruckman and I’m looking forward to silencing the critics that say you can’t play two rucks in the team. “There was a time there where people thought you couldn’t do it but obviously in the Grand Final both teams had two ruckmen so I’m looking forward to working with Paddy.” And while tap work will likely be his primary contribution to the Power set up, Lycett knows he will also be expected to float forward and hit the scoreboard. “I think it helps if you’re playing two ruckmen in the team you obviously have to be able to play forward and contribute up there,” he said. “And it’s not just about kicking goals, it’s about putting pressure on and making contests and stuff like that so hopefully when Paddy or myself is up forward, or one of
the young boys up and coming at the club, we can do that and hopefully put us in good stead.” Port Adelaide has now entered a period where players are auditioning for leadership spots following Travis Boak’s decision to step aside as captain after six seasons. Lycett said he would be happy to take on a leadership role if the opportunity arose, but was first trying to settle in to his new surrounds. “It’s not something I’d say no to but I’m just mindful that I’ve been here for three weeks and I’ve still got to earn my spot in the team and there’s only one way you can do that, by working hard and earning the respect of your teammates, coaches and the fans,” he commented. “I think it’s really important to have a strong group of leaders and I can definitely see that’s the case at Port so I’m not sure who’ll be the skipper but there’s a few candidates to go around because there’s some good leaders at the club.”

“i think change is going to be good” SAM MAYES SAM MAYES is relishing the challenge of regaining his best football to force his way into a new-look Port Adelaide side.
At 189 centimetres tall and 88 kilograms, Mayes offers a versatile option in midfield, defence or up forward.
Mayes landed at Alberton during the trade period as part of the deal which also landed the club Ryan Burton from Hawthorn.
He grew up a Melbourne supporter and played 22 SANFL games for North Adelaide for 21 goals before he was drafted.
Mayes left Adelaide as a teenager after being drafted at pick 8 by the Brisbane Lions in the 2012 AFL National Draft. The Port Pirie product has played 101 games and kicked 26 goals since making his debut in 2013. The 24-year-old only managed six games in 2018 but is eager to find form in a new environment. “I am really looking forward to a new challenge and a new change,” he said. “I’m just looking forward to getting stuck into it and learning the game plan and all about Port Adelaide.”
He was an under 18 AllAustralian in 2011 and was South Australian vice-captain at the under 18 championships. A Rising Star nominee in 2013, he also won Brisbane’s 2013 Rookie of the Year award. In a turn of fate, current Port Adelaide assistant coach Michael Voss was coach at Brisbane when Mayes was drafted by the Lions.
As for coming home to South Australia, he’s made his family very happy. “It’ll be great to be back closer to family but it isn’t the sole purpose for coming to Port Adelaide,” he said. “I think change is going to be good and I can see myself fitting into the Port side and while there’s obviously a lot of hard work to be done, I’m really looking forward to it.” Mayes will wear the number 34, previously worn by Premiership player and Magarey Medallist Nathan Buckley.
As well as Voss, Mayes is familiar with Tom Rockliff who captained the Lions before moving to the Power at the end of 2017, and he knows Ollie Wines well, having come through the AFL system at the same time.

DRAFTee GEOFF PARKER - NATIONAL RECRUITING MANAGER A host of South Australians and a couple of talented Victorians joined Port Adelaide in the 2018 National and Rookie drafts in November. For the first time since 2009 the Power had three picks inside the first round, selecting Connor Rozee with pick 5, Zak Butters with pick 12 and Xavier Duursma with pick 18. It then took Riley Grundy at pick 73 and Boyd Woodcock at pick 76. Connor Rozee was on the club’s radar for some time, having won the best player medal at the national Under-16 championships a couple of years ago. He is a very good mark for his size, uses the ball well and is very versatile demonstrating an ability to play both forward or back, or in the midfield. Zak Butters is fast and creative and will most likely start as a small forward option before he progresses into a midfield role. He injured his shoulder midway through the season but we are confident he will bounce back strongly from that and add some real pace and class to our list. He’s tough but also a very smart player
and makes good decisions going inside the forward 50. Xavier Duursma enjoyed a consistent season for the Gippsland Power and Vic Country, roaming through the midfield and across half-back. He has impressed with his ability to run and carry the ball. He’s played a lot across half-back this year and is a very good intercept mark who uses the ball well. Riley Grundy, the brother of Collingwood ruckman Brodie Grundy, is a fiercely competitive, developing tall defender who represented Sturt this season at Under 18 and Reserves level in the SANFL. He only took footy up four or five years ago but is developing very well as a tall defender. He’s very competitive and we wanted to get another developing tall defender onto our list so we had no hesitation when he became available. Boyd Woodcock, the 2017 McCallum-Tomkins Medallist as the SANFL’s best-and-fairest in the Under 18 competition, was outstanding for North Adelaide in their Grand Final victory
118 PORT ADELAIDE FOOTBALL CLUB YEARBOOK 2018
over Norwood kicking three first half-goals, having two score assists and gathering 15 disposals. He played in the forward half at league level for North Adelaide this season and showed great poise and class against bigger bodies. He was very dangerous as an attacking forward through the finals series but he has also demonstrated an ability to play a more defensive role if required as well. With its picks in the Rookie Draft Port Adelaide selected Tobin Cox with pick 9 and listed Cam Hewett with pick 25 after he was temporarily delisted at season’s end. It also added Next Generation Academy players Martin Frederick and Kai Pudney as Category B rookies. Tobin Cox was a highly rated 16 and 17-year-old but missed most of last year after injuring his shoulder. He’s a very clever, creative small forward who has played some league footy for Glenelg in the SANFL this year. He also represented South Australia in the Under 18 National Championships against Western Australia
but was injured and missed the remainder of the championships. Martin Frederick, who is of South Sudanese heritage and represented South Australia in their national under-18 team, has developed well at the Eagles and within our NGA program over the last twelve months. He has worked really hard this year and progressed from under-18 level to reserves level for Woodville-West Torrens in the SANFL. We are looking forward to his continued development over the coming years. Kai Pudney, the 2018 McCallum-Tomkins Medallist, also represented South Australia at the 2018 under-18 National Championships. His mother is Japanese and he has been part of our NGA program. We’ve all seen him develop well over the last twelve months. He had an outstanding South Australian Draft Combine where he dominated both the yo-yo test and the agility test in October so we look forward to seeing his continued development within our program.
