THE MATRIX : Transformation from Subtraction Cube Fall 2018 | ARCH 201 | Architectural Design I

The concept of The Matrix originated from one of the 6x6 paper subtraction cube. The negative spaces of this cube are geometric cubic subtractions, and its complexity is the key to the design of The Matrix house.

Study of subtractions on single form creating negative spaces

From the negative space study, the cubic rigid idea becomes the main concept of the Matrix House. By stacking the wood blocks, the composition and proportion are displayed more directly. Combining with an organic element is one of the objectives of this project. The objects such as vegetables and fruit are naturally formed organic objects. The Matrix gets an exclusive design with the decorations of spheres that are inspired by some fruits. Concept Development

The Matrix demonstrates a very straight forward conceptual bond between spacial relationship and proportion. The design merges the organic elements and cubes together to provide a unique designing style.

Fernando Spring is a virtual community with a population of around 15,000. Students need to organize and communicate to each other so that they operate together as a community/town with the same theme. Students in this studio class are required to choose a non-residential building in the real community, complete a case study and research of the building, then design their own. All the buildings have to be different from each other. For example, airport, hospital, city hall, post office, etc.. Will eventually be displayed together as a whole community.

The design of FSX is started from the circumstances of a local community airport, combining the elements of nets and waves. The airport focuses on the functionality of the circulation of population. Travelers who come to the airport will be lead on the designated route to complete the entire process before departure; which includes the use of check-in counters, security, resting areas, restrooms, restaurants, and even coffee shops. It also has the fully functional routine for the departing travelers.

FSX Airport’s design intention was to serve a 15000 population town in the most efficient flow. The steel construction must also support the structure of the whole building. The structural material is adopted with both steel studs and concrete panels. The wide flange beam provides enough support for the main structure and allow heavy weights such as second floor and solar panel roof sit on them. The composite beam system with pre-manufacture concrete panel gives a solid feeling for walking. On the top of the building, HSS beams with different width hold up the solar panel which also gives space on the roof for AC and heaters.

XIONG’S HOUSE :

Openly designed dream house

Spring 2018 | ARCH 110 | Intro to Design Fundamentals and Communication

Designing a dream house is the final project for the first semester in Citrus Architecture. Students are challenged to brainstorm for anything they would like to put in their house. Xiong’s House was a particular one that sits on a little sloping site, and has an extraordinary view from the backyard. It is a two story luxury house with 4 bedrooms and 4 and half bathrooms. Wide areas in the house give residents a comfortable feeling.

MATERIAL PRACTICE :

Application of Building Materials

Spring 2019 | ARCH 111 | Foundation Design

Cardboard is one of the most common materials for architectural students. This cardboard chair challenges students on all aspects of stability, comfort, and aesthetics at the same time. This particular 4 foot long, 3 foot wide, and 3 foot tall cardboard chair use layered cardboard as trusses to ensure the strongest structure, and the advantage of laser cutting also makes it much cleaner and more beautiful.

Concrete is one of the most important construction materials for every architecture. In this project, students identify different types of concrete, mix the concrete, and complete the whole process of making a simple 6x6 subtractive model with it.

CONSTRUCTION DETAILS :

Material Composition and Structural Framing

Fall 2019 | ARCH 242 | Building Construction

Construction Document is a necessary process which all the architects will be facing eventually. No matter how good the design is, the construction detail will always be there to make it stand up. In fact, it is also a part of the design element where the architect can use multiple materials to create composition to achieve the greatest weight load. In the United States, the most common structure materials are wood, steel, and concrete masonry units. The composition of the two are commonly seen in both residential and commercial building.

Structural framing is one of the most important elements of an architectural design. It is what holds the building together by distributing the loading force to every stud and column equally. In the class Building Construction, students need to complete a three story house framing model with required criteria such as recess back locally, interior court yard/atrium, local story set back, cantilever, and bridge etc..

Leaning Structure composition is the necessary step for an architect. This is how a standard platform framing single story house looks like. It is mainly held together with 2x4 and 2x6 studs. With some other dimension studs like ceiling joists and rafters, a 1/8=1’ scaled model is completed.

REVIT | MAYA :

Advanced Software Modeling

Spring 2019 | DRAF 161 | Advanced Computer Aided Design Fall 2019 | DRAF 290 | Introduction to Maya Practices

Residential Architecture Revit Software Render

AutoDesk Revit is a professional BIM tool for architectural practice. Citrus college students are asked to go out the classroom to meet with local architectural firms, and get a set of architectural plans. With all the informations in the plan such as floor-plan, elevations, detail documents, students are required to learn how to read the plan first, then modeling out the whole residential building in AutoDesk Revit within eight weeks. Besides the real world communication skills practice, the objective of the class is learning the application of texture, bump mapping, lighting, camera setting, and Revit software rendering. An animation of the walk through demonstrates all.

SCI-Arc :

Body Form, Relief Form, Expanded Form

Summer 2019 | Making+Meaning

Making+Meaning summer program at SCI-Arc provides students a fascinating opportunity to work with truly dedicated architects and instructors around the nation. The projects produced in the four weeks give students a remarkable sense of architectural study with space, texture, shadow, concept, etc.

Experiencing 3D scanning technology to create a mesh of the object, then 3D print to a smaller scale Body Form The first project utilizes contemporary methods of documentation and representation to compose an architectural form. We’ll use video and photo-grammetry techniques to 3D scan our bodies in various postures then texture map, render, and physically model the digital scans. Our bodies will be thought of as architectural parts that aggregate spatial relationships within and around them. Along the way, we’ll encounter terms such as form, scale, collaboration, ground, projection, and posture.

Textures with Repeated Patterns

Applied textures with different body compositions, then rendering a series of elevations and sections to demonstrate a sense of uniformity that is still distinguishable.

Folded paper models to experience the changes of space, light, shadows, and textures.

Surface and Depth Architecture is the masterly, correct and magnificent play of masses brought together in light. Our eyes are made to see forms in light; light and shade reveal these forms; cubes, cones, spheres, cylinders or pyramids, great primary forms which light reveals to advantage. These images are distinct and tangible within us without ambiguity. It is for this reason that these are beautiful forms. Everybody agrees to that, the child, the savage and the metaphysician. Le Corbusier, Vers un Architecture. This project introduces notions of volume, relief and texture as they relate to spatial relationships between objects, negative space and depth.

Direct-light

Point-light

Spot-light

Digital models on Rhino provide a more direct visualization of how direct-light, point-light, and spotlight express on the object. They including how the shadows and shades change in a very dynamic way.

The paper models display a situation where different light sources will hit on the same spot which create shadows toward different directions with different gradients. But the shadows and those gradients give out a special sense of depth to the models. Each time that light hits from a different angle, the shadows create a unique illusion on the model, with a completely new visual effect.

Expanded Form The third project introduces students to relationships of volume, ground, gravity, interiority and color. The assignment will conclude with a discussion of the relationship of three-dimensional form, scale, texture and color. Skills will continue to work with digital modeling in Rhino, color applications in Adobe Photoshop, hand-built paper models, model photography and augmented visualization.

Transforming shadows into bit map then apply RGB channel colors in Adobe Photoshop

Merging all three layers of shadows, and colors into a single object, and creating an intersecting, overlapping, and cross hatching pattern onto the surface to the model.
