Vale Norma Wainwright Norma Wainwright Vale Norma Wainwright who passed away recently. Norma was a tremendous WA bowler and represented Australia in 1988 and 1989 when it was very difficult for WA bowlers to obtain recognition in the Eastern States. Norma was a Bowls WA Hall of Fame Inductee in 2007. Condolences to all her family and friends from myself and the Bowls WA Board and staff.
Pennants It was fantastic we could finish off the pennant season for both men and women this year. In the Women's Premier League Manning again proved themselves beating their perenial rivals in Mosman Park. In the Men's Premier League Osborne Park prevailed over South Perth. Of interest to note was the performance of 16 year old Segan Pasalich – the youngest ever to win a PL premiership. I do hope your club was successful during the year and if not, has plans to bounce back next year?
Bowls Blitz Huge congratulations to Pieter Harris for creating this new concept and event. This will give State Squad members and aspiring State players the opportunity of competing against the best in the State over 4 months prior to final team selctions for the Sides Series on the Gold Coast in October this year. Good bowling to all selected. This will be an opportunity for all bowlers to attend the various venues selected and watch the best bowlers in our State. Please support them.

unfortunately prevented Cody Packer and Kristina Kristic from participating in BPL13 which is a huge disappointment for both of them. Let's hope they are both back in November representing the Perth Suns as they have both had a great season.
High Performance Academy I'm pleased to advise the bowlers selected for the Academy have applied themselves diligently and the Chairperson Linda Warburton is extremely pleased with their progress to date. The fact that most will be participating in the Bowls Blitz will give them further exposure to keen competition and make them aware of the level required to succeed in the future. Summation So far this year the Board and staff have: • commenced a review of the Governance of the sport in this State, • created the Innovations Committee to look at new opportunities, • selected a Junior Development Committee to give youngsters an opportunity to participate, • appointed Linda Warburton as Chairperson of the High Performance Academy. • commenced the Bowls Blitz for current and aspiring State bowlers. • the Club Development Committee have carried out numerous video presentations to promote our game. We have just finished a season of extremely competitive and enjoyable bowls. The Board and staff are working hard so all bowlers can enjoy our great game. I ask you to help by inviting family, friends and work associates to give our game a go so more people can derive the same competition and fellowship our great game offers.

Committees get us through tough times Another pennant season has quickly come and gone and apart from an uncomfortable two weeks for some, we have generally come through unscathed. Our winners have celebrated and our clubs that faced demotion or a season less than anticipated consider where it all went wrong. Well done to all Leagues and Fixtures and Events Committees that guided your competition through the season and although some disappointments in the Men’s IZRR and Ladies IZRR Pairs in comparison to many, our season was very fortunate.
Bowls Blitz Super League With 'The Nationals' moving to an October timeslot, all states and territories have needed to reconsider their pre-competition selection and training format. Enter the Bowls Blitz Super League which will pit the state open squad members and another handful of leading players from outside the squads into eight franchises of eight players over a 14-match competition. Across all bowls disciplines the 4-day event (over four months) will be sharp 90-minute games with a variety of scoring options. The matches will pit the best available players in WA and no doubt will be a great spectacle as the majority of players fight for a state team berth in Broadbeach on the Gold Coast in October. Venues have now been confirmed with Mt Lawley, Willetton, Kardinya and Cambridge to host the matches, commencing on the 23rd May at Mt Lawley BC.
Our oldest club turns 125 Congratulations to our oldest club, Perth and Tattersalls which turned 125 in April, celebrating with a period dress function on the 1st April. In draining 35 degrees heat a number of dignitaries were in attendance including Lord Mayor Basil Zempilas, Deputy Lord Mayor and the local Member for Perth John Carey all of whom bowled a ceremonial first bowl on the green to celebrate the occasion. This same tradition occurred exactly 125 years earlier at 3.00pm, when then the wife of inaugural Club President and Premier of WA, Sir John Forrest rolled the first bowl, to formally open our now oldest bowling club in WA. Well done to Perth and Tatts on an excellent occasion!

Seventh State All Abilities Championships The 2021 State All Ability Championships ran over the weekend of April 17 and 18 with 46 participants in four categories of Deaf, Intellectual and Physical Disability, and Vision Impairment. This is a 18% growth from 2020 and 30% from 2019! With new players in every category, it was a treat to see the quality of bowls being played as participants fought for titles in Singles and Pairs. Bowls WA thanks all players for their determination and stamina, playing up to five games a day! A special thank you to Auslan Interpreter Tara Ulrich who volunteers her time at our Opening and Closing Ceremonies…and another special thank you to Bateman's newest Labor Member of Parliament, Kim
Giddens MLA, who presented medals and acquainted herself with the players and the event! A HUGE THANK YOU to Kardinya Bowling Club for again hosting this fantastic event and the volunteers from Tournament Director Steve Flynn, the Markers, those who help Score Cards and Scoreboards, the Kitchen helpers, and the Greens Committee! Without Clubs who support Inclusive Initiatives we would not be able to provide a competitive environment for Inclusive High-Performance Pathways! In what is now a tradition, we ended the All-Abilities weekend with a Deaf Clap of Appreciation! We look forward to hosting this event again next year…each year gets bigger and better!

From the Umpires
Peter BARNETT
, What is fair? A dummy s guide to anomalies For bowlers new to umpiring, attempting to read the Law Book is quite daunting as it goes through lots of scenarios of game anomalies all similar but different. If reading them is hard enough, remembering them is even harder. Help is on its way because behind this seemingly endless list of anomalies and how to deal with them there is a logical patten. You do not have to learn the Laws word by word if you understand the logic behind them. That logic is that the Laws and hence Umpire’s decisions are based on 'what is fair? Sometimes that is not perfectly fair but is the fairest possible outcome. For example, if you accidently move a bowl in the head then the opposition team puts it back where they thought it was. A logic that can be described poetically as 'You offend, I amend'. Only four words to remember and you are half way there. However, if that bowl was moved by a bowl from a neighbouring rink, then no-one in your game has offended so a different logic is needed. The two players/teams must try to agree where the bowl was before it was moved and if they cannot agree, then it is a dead end. This is an example of not perfect but fairest possible outcome as the team holding shot has more to lose should the end be declared dead. So, the solutions to no fault anomalies is to attempt to agree and if no agreement declare a dead end. We are now 75% of the way there. Equally simple and fair is the logic of, 'If nothing has changed in the head, then do it again'. In the above two examples a bowl in the head was moved but if your head was not changed then the situation can be undone. Examples being, a bowl from another rink that you have stopped before it disturbs your head OR bowls on adjacent rinks collide when being delivered OR bowling out of turn OR delivering the wrong bowl. We are now 90% of the way to understanding the laws with respect to anomalies with only three things to remember. Well…not quite that easy as there are definitions of bowl/ jack movement that need to be understood before you can understand the Laws.
8
They are: • The first movement of a bowl or jack is when you bowl it from when it leaves your hand until it stops. Called a bowl/ jack in 'Original course' • When a bowl is stationary it is called 'At rest' • When at rest the bowl can be bumped by another bowl [or jack or neutral object] and this movement is called 'in motion' • The Laws use the word 'Displacement' when referring to the bowl being moved. With these understanding of what is fair and these definitions we can avoid learning 10 pages of the Bowl and Jack displacement and instead refer the shorter Dummies Guide/ displacement chart in Appendix C of the Law Book. So just remember: • You offend, I amend • For no fault anomalies attempt to agree or if no agreement, declare a dead end. • If nothing has changed take it back and do it again.

, Men s All Stars vs State Squad
We have completed the bowling season without too many disruptions. Compared to 2020, we were able to complete a full bowling season, apart from one week in January because of the Covid 19 lock down. Thanks to the players who made themselves available to play in the Men's All Stars versus the State Squad before Country Week this year. The IZRR at Busselton was washed out, so a decision was made to pick last year’s All Stars team to play this year’s Men’s State Squad. Not a good result for the All Stars, however I think those that played enjoyed themselves. Congratulations to Mathew France from Merredin on winning the Men's Singles, the Comet Bay team of Rob and Bob Tiller on winning the Pairs and the York team of Aaron Smith, Hayden Smith, Phil Jones and Justin Smith on winning the Fours title. Congratulations to Merredin being the winner of the Bignell Shield for the Most Outstanding club at Men's Country Week. This year the Country Committee decided to reduce the number of Ladies to play in the Country All Stars Team from 48 players to 24 players to play against the Metro All Stars Team. This was however not popular with Country ladies and they would like it to return to 48 players for 2022 and treat it as a Welcome Fours format.
BowlsWA • Jack Hi • Autumn 2021
We will review this at the Country Committee on the 28th May and suggest we have the State Squad play a President Team in the morning. This year the Ladies were able to complete Country week. Congratulations to Sian Smith from York on winning the Ladies Singles. Congratulations also to Jennie Bruce and Kerry Scott from Busselton on winning the Pairs Title and congratulations to Chris Ace-Watson, Irene Leahy, Pauline Rolton and Lori Pettit from Boulder on winning the Fours Title. Congratulations to York and Busselton, who could not be separated, on winning the Bowls WA shield for the Ladies Most Outstanding Club. I presented the winning trophy to the Northern Zone who proved too Strong at the Ladies IZRR held at Kellerberrin. Southwest Zone came second with the Southern and Eastern Zones filling the last two places. I would like to thank the Kellerberrin Sporting Club management for their time and effort they put into looking after some hundred Ladies with meals and drinks over the two days. The new Bowls Blitz competition starts in May with the first game played at Mt Lawley Bowling Club on the 23rd May. Nine country bowlers have been picked up in the draft to play in this competition. The competition has been instigated by Pieter Harris and the High Performance Team. This will ensure our State Squads get to play in a High Level tournament in the off season before the State Teams are selected. With Southern Clubs going into their normal winter recess, I wish everyone all the best if you are travelling north or staying home in these uncertain times.

Metro Inter Region Round Robin
South Coastal claim IRRR • Women's IRRR winners.
The women’s metro Inter Region Round Robin (IRRR) was hosted by the Southern Region at Willetton Bowling Club on April 17 and 18 2021. This event is unique in that players are selected on a points basis dependant on which division they are playing in and as such players of various divisions play together for their respective region. This event hosts 96 bowlers, 24 players from the following Regions: 1. Eastern; 2. Northern; 3. South Coastal; 4. Southern. The players compete in three regional round-robin games of 18 ends prior to an All-Star Game where the 8 of each region’s best players are selected to compete in three 50-minute timed games against each other region. In a new scoring format where game points come first, followed by total margin if points are even, the following results occurred: South Coastal were crowned the winners after a long drought at the IRRR Games with 34 points, followed closely by Northern with 30, then Southern with 27 and Eastern with 13. Each region then selected eight of their best players to be All Stars Representatives with further matches played on Sunday afternoon.
10
• Norma Samuel presents Alison Buckingham with the Regional Trophy.
South Coastal were again the winners with 15 points, followed by Northern with 9, and both Eastern and Southern had 6 points with two wins. Thank you to the many volunteers and organisers who helped with the 2021 Women’s IRRR and congratulations to all players on making it a great weekend of spirited competition! • Full results of Regional Round Robin games – CLICK HERE • Full results of All Star Games – CLICK HERE

, Men s Pennants played in perfect conditions Men's Saturday Pennants Absolutely perfect weather conditions graced bowlers lucky enough to make finals over the weekend March 27 and 28 as they took to the greens for the last time in the Blooms The Chemist Men’s Saturday Pennant Competition for season 2020-21. All results from Pennant, Challenge and Promotion Finals from Men’s Saturday Pennants can be found on the Bowls WA Competition Portal. Divisions 2-5 played their pennant finals on Saturday and it was four very happy clubs at the end of the day. Congratulations to Hollywood-Subiaco in second division, Gosnells in third division, Fremantle in 4th division and Stirling in fifth division. Also well done to Mt Lawley • Osborne Park win Premier League. who were awarded the flag with no finals played after finishing on top of the ladder in sixth division. All first division finals were hosted by Yokine Bowling Club on Sunday. A huge crowd gathered to cheer on six strongly supported clubs who were looking to claim victory. The first flag to be decided was in 1st Blue where the North and South top of the ladder sides in Mt Lawley and Cockburn battled it out for the title. Mt Lawley who had started slowly took the win as they over ran Cockburn for a 87-64 victory. The surge came in the middle stages at all Mt Lawley rinks turned up the pressure scoring well, most notable was the team of Mark Masel, Paul Sinden, John Cottier and Peter Callison who trailed 0-11 before going on to win 20-15. Metro Pennants
Osborne Park claim Premier double Men's Saturday Pennants – continued As the match progressed South Perth steadied themselves and started to lay down a challenge, as the match approached the half-way mark they had narrowed the margin and actually drew level when the Justin Opie rink for South Perth picked up a 6 after an unusually poor end from Cody Packer's team. Osborne Park however once again steadied the ship and then continued to once again build a double-digit margin. South Perth then made another run for the title. Glen Pauling’s rink of Tyrone Alberti, David Mortley and Derek Angell were the best in the home and away competition and they started to close the gap on the Stevens rink with the other rinks also scoring at the same time the gap once again reduced to just a few shots. Osborne Park then saved their best for the finish and across the board they all had good ends. Gary Caffell’s rink with some excellent leading from Ian Lilburne with Robbie Lawrence and youngster Connor Biddle who played extremely well started to get on top of the rink skippered by Scott Walker. You can watch a replay of the Caffell v Walker game on the Bowls WA Facebook Page. Caffell himself played a match winner trailing the jack for a 4. Packer’s rink narrowed back the margin against Opie whilst Brown and Stevens again asserted their dominance. Suddenly with just 9 ends to play the margin was back to 13 shots and Osborne Park had their tails up and looking unstoppable at this stage. They eventually played out a 85-67 victory.
• Osborne Park claimed the Saturday and Midweek Premier flags.
Presentations were made by Bowls WA President Larry Bandy with Andria Aird from Blooms The Chemist handing over the Pennant badges and flags to the winners.

Women’s Tuesday Pennants
Six Clubs receive Flags Another great season of Blooms The Chemist Women’s Tuesday Pennants came to a close when six clubs received a pennant flag during a bumper finals day of action at Yokine Bowling Club on Wednesday March 17th. It was a rather tough season for the players in this competition with two rounds abandoned due to heat and a third due to the covid lockdown but here is how it all panned out. All Women’s Tuesday Pennant Competition Finals results are available at Bowls WA Competition Portal In Premier League it was tradition rivals Manning and Mosman Park who dominated this division once again as they have done for the past 11 seasons however what was great about this year was the competitiveness across all 10 teams. The last round of play saw four teams fighting to save relegation whilst three others were trying to secure the last finals spot. Commiserations must go to Leeming and Wanneroo who both finished on 39.5pts and head back to 1st Division White next year. Melville 40ps and Safety Bay 42pts will be thankful they survived. In the finals North Beach produced a great fighting effort to come from behind to defeat Osborne Park 64-59 whilst Manning overcame the home ground advantage held by Mosman Park beating them 68-56. Mosman Park quickly hit back to qualify for the final steam rolling North Beach 63-36 to set up the grand final that everyone would have predicted at the start of the year. So into battle went both sides full of optimism and hope, Mosman Park had sat top of the table all year whilst Manning are always up to the task in the big matches. Both teams were playing well and the scores were close for most of the first half of the match but as the game progressed it was Manning who began to once again establish themselves as the powerhouse in Women’s bowls. The stars of the day without doubt were the rink of Therese Hastings, Liz Matthews, Sharon Lyster and Saffronne Alden who demolished a rink who had barely lost a game all season in Lee Poletti, Linda Warburton, Judy Allen and Jill Adam 32-11. WA State Coach Therese Hastings showing she hasn’t lost any of the skill that made her a four time WA Bowler of the Year with a great display. Congratulations once again to Manning who are building a dynasty that will surely be tough for any club to replicate. Other pennant winners were North Beach in 1st Division White, Osborne Park in 1st Blue North, Warnbro in 1st Green South, Bassendean in second division, Forrestfield in third division and South Perth in fourth division.

Under 18s State Championships
Promising bowlers in Under 18s Thirteen promising junior bowlers took to the greens for the Dyenamic Sublimation Under 18 State Championships which was played at Cambridge Bowling Club from April 13-15. The first event to be played was the Triples and with four teams in contention this was played as a round robin event. Given this was the first time many of these juniors had played together the camaraderie was exceptional. The composite side of Ruby Leggett (Osborne Park) as skip with Joshua Vlahos (Joondalup) second and Callum Alberti (South Perth) lead were the stand out team finishing with three strong wins 234, 14-4 and 11-3. Finishing as runner-ups were Segan Pasalich (Osborne Park) with Cam Wellington and Dante Burnham (Harvey) who had two wins and the one loss. In the pairs six teams were split into sections. In section 1 Segan Pasalich and Callum Alberti advanced to the final with 13-9 and 14-5 victories whilst Section 2 saw Ruby Leggett with Brock Kilmurray (Dandaragan) also record two wins 10-8 and 10-5. The final saw some terrific bowls played by both sides however it was Pasalich and Alberti who came out on top with a nice 13-6 victory. The last scheduled event was the blue ribbon singles championship and all players were in their best form having had BowlsWA • Jack Hi • Autumn 2021

plenty of ends in the previous two disciplines. The three sectional winners were Segan Pasalich, Callum Alberti and Cam Wellington. Pasalich and Alberti played in the semifinal in what was a great encounter. The younger of the two Alberti started magnificently with some fantastic draw bowling to have his more experienced opponent under pressure. Pasalich however who was part of the Osborne Park Premier League victory was able to eventually gain control and went on to win 21-14. In the final Wellington had to come up against Pasalich who was now in red hot form. Both players had some great ends but the consistency of Pasalich really shone out as the match progressed. Congratulations to Segan Pasalich for a well deserved 21-10 victory and he joins some of the elite juniors to have played for WA amongst the honour roll. Overall a big well done to all the Under 18 players and thank you for the support they received from parents and supporters including some of our high performance coaches. The Under 18 players will now prepare for the Australian Under 18 National series in October 2021 on the Gold Coast at Broadbeach Bowling Club.

MEN
Bowls Blitz Super League
It all begins 23rd May 2021! The Bowls WA High Performance Committee has recently been reformed and part of their charter and goals is to find ways to increase the level of competition, whether it be interstate or internally. As the first step, the High-Performance Committee will be conducting a tournament to be played over one Sunday per month starting in May for State Squad members plus other drafted players. 2nd Division and Under Singles and Pairs
Great bowls at Osborne Park
A busy Easter weekend of bowls at Osborne Park Bowling Club saw some great bowls played as the champions in the Bethanie Group Men’s 2nd Division and Under Singles and Pairs were crowned. In the Singles Dudley Park member Graham Miller (pictured) took the final 21-13 over Steve Mulhall from Safety Bay. Miller survived some tough encounters on his way to the final which included a 21-18 win over the Pairs winner Jeremy Thomas and also a thrilling 17-16 victory over a regular finalist in this event in Joe Rollnik. In the Pairs the composite side of Jeremy Thomas from Yanchep and Gareth Hill from Fremantle combined to claim victory in a very tight affair. They defeated Victoria Park Carlisle side of Dave Florence and Robbie Johnson 19-16. Congratulations to the champions and well done to Osborne Park Bowling Club who run this event. Thank you to the sponsors Bethanie Group and all those whose competed.

Nairn and Marsland land Masters title Cambridge’s Blake Nairn continued his hot recent form whilst Mosman Park’s Dale Marsland was a standout in the final as the pair combined for victory in the Hart & Co Doubleview Men’s Masters Pairs. Nairn and Marsland had a terrific finals day winning through in the semi final with a comfortable 18-5 win over Ryan Moyle (Doubleview) and Corey Bessant (Mt Lawley) in the semi final. They took on John Slavich (Doubleview) and Justin Opie (South Perth) who had survived a late charge from the Cambridge pair of Andrew Foster and Steven Rushforth 19-17. In the final Nairn and in particular Marsland always held the upper hand, after beginning well to lead 8-1 the closest Slavich and Opie could get to them was 14-10 with just two ends to play however a well played end and two more shots gave them breathing space heading into the last end for a final score of 16-11. Doubleview Bowling Club would again like to thank Cambridge who hosted the washed out Day 1 and all the players who participated along with first time tournament sponsors Hart & Co.

Family Affair in Over 60s Pairs
• Lexie Harris, Nerrida Porteous, Renate Coote and Pauline Bourne.
Coote wins her second 100up title • Lee Poletti (Mosman Park) and Kim Cross (Wonthella).
The final of the Over 60s Mixed Pairs will provide plenty of family discussion with the brother and sister combination of Kim Cross (Wonthella) and Lee Poletti (Mosman Park) overcoming the husband and wife team of Ross and Linda Warburton (Brunswick and Mosman Park) respectively. The final score of 18-16 was a fair indication of the match, with the winners never headed after firing out to a 9-0 lead after only three ends. The Warburton’s responded from there getting it back to 7-10 before another four shot run by the winners seemingly enough to carry the day. But at 7-14 and not to be outdone the challengers went 3,1,2 of their own to be 13-14 after 15 ends in the 18 end match. The 16th end was almost the final straw with Cross drawing for a full count of six, only to knock up a short opposition bowl to reduce the end to a three – sister was not impressed! A single on the 17th end to make it 18-13 was almost enough and although the runners up grabbed a last end three, the 18-16 result did the match justice. In the semi finals it was the Warburton’s 14-13 over the Colin Hayes/Jenny Parker combination, with the winners comprehensive 25-8 over last years champions Chris Lander and Pauline Bourne. Renate Coote (Mosman Park) is not letting age get in her way as she powered onto her second Women’s 100up title with a win over Nerrida Porteous (Ellenbrook) 100-87. A proud 80 year old, Renate overcame State Squad member Lexie Harris (Busselton) in the first Semi Final by coming through in the second half of the match after being down in the first. A number of seven point ends got her back into the match before finishing it off with consecutive eights to win 100-90. Nerrida had a close game all the way in her semi final against Pauline Bourne (Sorrento). The two ladies went shot for shot before Bourne opened up the biggest lead of the match 85-75. With only a few ends to play, Porteous reeled off an eight and a nine to jump to the lead and then hung on to win 101-99. In the first to 100 final Coote started strongly and built a substantial lead of 55-25 before Porteous started to claw her way back. A number of 7-3 ends closed the gap and then a big 9 followed a couple of ends later saw Porteous draw within 10 with the score 85-75. Immediately after dropping the 10, Coote hit back immediately with a 9 of her own to extend her margin and move within six of the finish line. A score of only two on the second last end, put Coote back under pressure but while being down on the last end, Coote drew two shots within a foot to take points and take home the 2020-21 100up Championship. Renate Coote previously won the 100up singles in 2018. Full Results of the Women’s 100up Singles available here

Lander and Abe win singles titles Chris Lander The Motobility Men’s and Women’s Over 60’s Singles titles were played Friday 23rd April at Gosnells Bowling Club with two very worthy winners crowned. In the Men’s event Sorrento’s Chris Lander (Sorrento) added his first major singles title after many attempts. His great draw play was a feature of his game as throughout all three days of play he regularly beat his opponents to the jack and when they knocked him off he just put the next bowl back there again. Lander is probably one of the most experienced bowlers in the state having played from a very young age and is like a fine wine has matured into an exceptional player. In the final both players took a few ends to adjust to the conditions before Lander began to hone in on the jack with regularity. He proved far too good for Peter Cole from Halls Head who had a great event but his luck deserted him in the final. Cole who likes to reach the head when his opponent is close had regularly sat bowls or trailed jacks on his way to the final which included a big 21-7 semi-final win over Otto Dawson (Mosman Park). Cole played well and hit some good drives but had a large number of weighted bowls which just narrowly missed their target particularly in the second half of the match which Lander dominated as he went on to win 21-10.
• Men's winner – Chris Lander.
Noelene Abe The Women’s final saw the unheralded Lily Rughoobur (North Beach) in her first ever major final up against one of WA’s most decorated players Noelene Abe (Corrigin) who has probably lost count of how many finals she has played in and won. Both players had put in some great lead up wins Rughoobur surviving some very close encounters beating Erica Andersson (Leeming), Kathy Gobbart (Gingin) and Trish Cunningham (Mosman Park) whilst Abe had a couple of easier wins but survived a thriller against Kerry Andersen 21-19 in her quarter final which many spectators marvelled at how great a game it was. So into the final and Rughoobur was not fazed by her much more experienced opponent and put in a terrific effort playing some great bowls. Abe however had a purple patch in the middle of the match where she played some pinpoint draw shots and with the score advancing to 18-10 her way it looked like it may be all over. Rughoobur however lifted and played a series of good ends and was right back in the match with the score at 19-14 Abe’s way but with her now very much under pressure. Abe however showed her true champion status when lying 3 down she played the match winner, with nice weight she came through and grabbed the jack and stuck with it to take it to her own back bowl and hold match. Rughoobur tried valiantly to recover the situation but her bowl was narrow and Abe claimed her second Over 60’s Singles title after winning in 2020. BowlsWA • Jack Hi • Autumn 2021

Innaloo Bowling Club host State Triples Featherby, Merz and Warburton prevail in close contest After a wild Saturday evening and a predicted wild Sunday, the Men’s and Women’s State Triples Finals day was moved to the undercover green at the Innaloo Bowling Club. A big thankyou to Innaloo who had no hesitation in opening their clubhouse and making everyone feel welcome at very short notice. The Women’s first Semi Final saw North Beach’s Carole Roe, Annette Campbell and Lily Rughoobur have a narrow win over the impressive Kukerin lineup of Beverley Davidson, Debbie Smith and Jennifer Joyce 15-12 The second Semi Final had Lisa Featherby, Laura Merz and Linda Warburton (Composite) and Lee Poletti, Vicki Spragg, Noelene Abe (Composite) pitted against each other with Featherby prevailing 14-10. The Featherby versus Roe final shaped up to be a close affair with both teams playing well. However, it was Featherby, Merz and Warburton who took control the longer the game progressed.
• Women's Triple winners – Laura Mertz, Lisa Featherby and Linda Warburton.
Roe, Campbell and Rughoobur did not have enough answers when it mattered and Lisa Featherby, Laura Merz and Linda Warburton ran out convincing winners 23-10.
Trewella, Holt and Mitchell hold on The first Semi Final of the Men’s State Triples was a battle of the titans with Daniel Trewhella, Warren Holt and Tom Mitchell (Composite) taking on Cody Packer, Shane Knott and Scott O’Brien (Composite). With Trewhella moving to a handy lead, Packer was fighting back but could not do enough, with Trewhella winning 14-12. The second Semi Final involved the Composite team of Neville Costello, Derek Griffin and Brian Bukowski taking on Kalamunda’s Arthur Bartlett, Dwane Wooltorton and Robert Farrant. As the Costello team had done in previous knockout games, they played with confidence and produced the big bowls when it mattered to defeat Bartlett 18-8. The Men’s Final started with Costello, Griffin and Bukowski taking control and jumping out to a 5-nil lead. Trewhella, Holt and Mitchell hit back with a three and then Costello answered with a single. However, that would be the last end Costello scored on for a majority of the game. Trewhella went on a six-end unanswered run which included two 3’s and a four to take a match winning 17-6 lead.

• Men's winner – Warren Holt, Daniel Trewhella and Tom Mitchell.
A single to Costello on the twelfth end was quickly answered by Trewhella with a two, one and one to finish the game with a 21-7 victory.

Club in Profile – Denison Bowling Club
Denison survives with volunteer support
The Denison Bowling club as with all business, communities and community sporting facilities have been hit hard with the chain of events that were caused when COVID19 hit the world. Denison Bowling Club had to make an exceedingly difficult decision to go fully volunteer at the club, this was done to enable the club to continue financially. The Denison Bowling is well known for its annual carnivals these being: • January Kailis Carnival • May 5 Day Carnival • September Men’s and Ladies Classic • October Kakas 3 These carnivals could not be as successful as they have been without of course our incredible volunteers around the club but also without all of our amazing sponsors Aglime, Lindsay And Val Baskerville , Bernie Clarkson, BP Roadhouse, C & T Hicks Electrical, Carpet Choice, Cockburn Cement, Cr Construction, Deal Freight, Dongara Build & Trade, Dongara Drilling & Electrical, Dongara Funeral Services, Dongara Hotel Motel, Dongara IGA, Dongara Tyrepower, Easy Auto Care, EBM Insurance, Fig Tree Fashion, Geraldton Toyota, Gillam & Watson, Henderson Shearing, I & L Cliff, Jaycam, MG Kailis, Mitchel & Brown, Pannarai, Pat Ryan Landscaping, Port Store, Ray White, Seaside Signs, Shane Love MLA, Southerly’s Tavern, Specs 2-4-1. Another big decision was changing from our magnificent grass greens to synthetic, purely again to keep our bowling club going, we were hoping to start the change from grass to synthetic after our 2021 Kailis Carnival which was again an extremely successful carnival. However we decided that it would be best to leave the change from Grass to Synthetic until the completion of our very well supported May carnival. It is a great carnival, and we love what it brings into the community with many visitors from the lower parts of WA and even interstate travellers from time to time.

Whilst things are always changing and the times are different after COVID, our club remains the same, our club has a relaxing and welcoming feel and we pride ourselves on a providing a refreshing cold beverage and delicious meals of a Friday night, our wonderful band of volunteers that look after the club – maintaining our beautiful grass greens and keeping it sparkling clean and tidy inside and out for you to enjoy. We would love to invite you to come and visit Dongara/ Denison for a break, come and see our club, partake in a roll of bowls, and enjoy all we have to offer. France and Ford fight out tight final Men's Country Week Singles The 2021 Countryweek Singles Final brought together two former Champions with Matthew France (Merredin) winning in 2015 and Michael Ford (Geraldton) in 2016. Both men had to work hard to make the final. France overcame former Countryweek Fours winner Arthur Crabbe (Gnowangerup) 21-14, while Ford had a hard-fought win over clubmate Joe Cukela (Geraldton) 21-17. The early running in the final was made by France as he jumped out to a 7-1 with impressive drawing ability. Ford hit back over the next three ends with some great conversion shots to close the gap 6-7. That hard work looked for nothing as France again skipped away with a full four count and a 12-7 lead. Not to be denied, Ford again dug deep and won the next six ends with a mix of draw and running shots, including five singles to hit the front 14-12 and then edge away to 16-13. Ford looked to be going the best as France had lost some of his earlier touch and Ford continued to put the pressure on from the first bowl. A single to France on the twentieth end followed by another four seemed to jolt him into action and to take control. Winning the final four ends saw Matthew France close out the game 21-16 and take home his second Countryweek Singles Championship.

Men's Country Week Pairs The 2021 Countryweek Pairs was a tight contest between two evenly matched teams being father and son combination Rob and Bob Tiller (Comet Bay) and Eaton’s Mark Mills and Neville Woods. In the Semi Finals, Tiller overcame Northam’s Ian Hill and Phil Becker 19-13. While Mills won a hard-fought contest over previous winners Aaron and Justin Smith 12-6. Rob Tiller won the first end of the final, but it was Mark Mills that got the early jump with a five on the second end. A three and then a two to Tiller soon erased the big score but with a two to Mills, it was the Eaton pair leading 7-6 after five ends. Ends 6-9 turned out to be the decisive ends of the match. The Tiller’s grabbed a four to lead 10-6 and then won the next three ends as well, with a two, single and another four to complete the sequence. With a 17-7 lead after 9 ends of the 14-end game, it looked one more score from over. Tiller was again holding shots on the tenth end before Mills trailed the jack for a desperate single and a chance the climb the long road back. Another single on the eleventh end, followed by a Mark Mills killed twelfth and then a three on the replay and a single on the thirteenth end, put the Mills/Woods combination down by four with one end to play. A well-constructed last end by Rob and Bob Tiller never gave Mills an opportunity to get the four he needed and when his last bowl drive to kill the end missed, Robert and Bob Tiller became the first Father and Son combination to win the Men’s Countryweek Pairs. 28

Men's Country Week Fours
Smith wins Singles
The 2021 Countryweek Fours final lined up with two powerhouse teams fighting it out. Despite their recent dominance of Men’s Countryweek, the Aaron Smith, Haydn Smith, Phil Jones, and Justin Smith combination had not won a fours title as they went up against John Trewhella, Ron Bates, Russell Tyrrell and Matthew Trewhella (Dudley Park). In the Semi Finals, the Smith and Jones team defeated the Star Merredin team, including the eventual Singles Champion, of Ashley Sharp, Matthew France, Ben Parker and Ken Preston 18-7. The Trewhella team fought hard to defeat Busselton’s Brian Gearing, Gary Rundle, Howard Joyce and Bruce Edgar. The final was played in increasingly blustery conditions on a very good Manning green, with both teams taking some time to adjust. Trewhella jumped out quickly and led 4-0 after two ends before Smith settled and climbed back even at 5-5 after six ends. On the seventh end, the Aaron Smith team dealt a big blow when they came away with five shots to take a fiveshot margin. John Trewhella hit back with a double but a responding four on the ninth end gave Smith a commanding 14-7 lead. At this stage both leads had led their respective teams very well and were having a great battle, but it was the rest of the Smith team that combined the best to put their skip in winning positions with Aaron Smith finishing off their work to perfection. Both teams traded shots over the last few ends as the Trewhella team tried to make inroads into the lead. However, at every turn they were answered, and it was Aaron Smith, Haydn Smith, Phil Jones, and Justin Smith that prevailed 21-10.
Women's Country Week Singles Sian Smith (York) has taken out the 2020-21 Women’s Countryweek Singles after leading for all but one end in the final up against Kathy Gobbart (Gingin) In the first Semi Final, Smith had to fight for the whole match against Paula Reid (Kojonup). First one player would have a small lead and then the other player would level it up and go ahead. 2 all, 6 all, 10 all and 14 all along with multiple lead changes made for an entertaining game before a final end three put Sian Smith into the final.

Bignell Perpetual Memorial Shield It was the Merredin Club that rose to the top to win the P.S. Bignell Perpetual Memorial Shield. In what was a close contest, it was Matthew France’s Singles win and the Merredin teams Semi Final efforts that got the club over the line as the Best Club at Men’s Countryweek.

• Sian Smith – Women's Countryweek singles champion for 2020-21.
The second Semi Final saw Gobbart have small leads multiple times only to see her opponent Vicki Spragg (Dudley Park) level it up. At 12-11 to Spragg it was anybody’s game in the race to 17, however two big ends from Gobbart saw her quickly finish the game with first a three and then a four to reach the final. With Kathy Gobbart a twice winner of the event and Sian Smith chasing her first title it was an intriguing matchup in terms of experience and style. Smith was behind after two ends 1-2 but that was to be the last time. A run of two, three and one, saw Smith move to a 7-2 lead. The players then traded doubles to see Smith still leading 11-6 but a full count of four to Smith on the 11th end saw her stretch out to a 15-7 lead in her chase to get to 21. Gobbart settled to win six of the next seven ends to close within one at 15-16 and then traded ends to level up at 1818. A two to Smith on the 20th end put her within one of the trophy and although dropping a single put Gobbart within two, a final end single saw Sian Smith close it out to be the 2020-21 Women’s Countryweek Singles Champion. 29
, Women s Country Week Women's Country Week Pairs Busselton’s Jennie Bruce and Kerry Scott claimed their first Women’s Countryweek Pairs trophy by defeating Irene Grout and Tanya Groves (Dudley Park) in the final at Osborne Park. In the first Semi Final, Bruce had an up and down match against Karlgarin pair Leonie James and Jill Fotheringhame. Bruce jumped to a 6 -0 lead but was rounded up by James and passed to be down 10-12. It was then that Bruce and Scott kicked into another gear to win the last four ends, including two threes to win 19-12. Grout ran into another Busselton pairing of Gail Botting and Helen Paganoni in her semi final encounter. Grout and Groves looked to be cruising after building a good lead at 14-6 with only three ends to play. However, a late charge by Botting, including a second last end four made it a last end contest. After only dropping a single, Irene Grout held on for a 14-12 victory. The final started as a close contest with the first four ends alternating between the teams. However, that was not to last as the Bruce and Scott pairing started to win consecutive ends. Over the next eleven ends, Bruce won nine of them and only drop singles on the ones she lost. At 18-5, the game finished slightly early with Jennie Bruce and Kerry Scott as the Champions.
• Countryweek Fours winners – Boulder Bowling Club.
Women's Country Week Fours The Boulder team of Chris Ace-Watson, Irene Leahy, Pauline Rolton and Lorraine Pettit were too strong for Karen Miller, Beryl Cooper, Christine Radford and Gwen Anning (Composite) in the final of the Women’s Countryweek Fours to claim their first Fours title. In the first Semi Final, Ace-Watson had to come from behind to beat Paula Reid, Beverley Broom, Sally Carey and Shelley Bilney (Kojonup) 14-11. The Reid team raced to a 6-0 and then an 8-2 lead halfway through the contest. Ace- Watson then strung together four ends in a row including two doubles and a three to take the lead 10-8. Reid went on to three of the last four ends but could only get singles, while the only end that Ace Watson won was a four to keep them in front and onto the final. The Miller team took on the Meadow Springs team of Pat Huckson, Gayle George, Aileen Manderson and Jennifer Forrest in the second semi-final and like Ace-Watson had to work hard to get on top. While Miller won ten of the fifteen ends, Huckson was able to make her wins count by getting both a four and a five during the game. Miller was able to win multiple ends in a row including the last three ends to take the win 16-12. The final started with the Miller team off to a flying start by winning the first five ends and leading 7-0. But once Ace-Watson got on the board, her team was able to put together six ends in a row including a five and two threes to jump away 15-7. A single and double to Miller put them within reach but that was snuffed out quickly with Ace-Watson getting a five on the second last end to make it a 20-10 score line and out of reach of their opposition.

Country Pennants 2020-21
Consistency gains win for Wagin in Great Southern If you are a ladies’ pennant bowler in Wagin then there is only one place you are permitted to be on a Tuesday over summer and that is on the bowling green. Having just enough players to field two teams of four players for the Wagin pennant side, everyone must be there. And they all have been there, most of the time. Over the season, Wagin has used just nine ladies and has been thankful to two men who filled in when necessary. The dedication players have shown over the 2020-2021 season has been rewarded with Wagin winning the pennant competition by a clear margin. Wagin played 10 games, won nine and drew one finishing 10 ½ points clear of Dumbleyung in second place followed by Moodiarrup third. Wagin plays in the Great Southern League against sides representing Katanning, Kojonup, Moodiarrup and Dumbleyung. Kojonup fields two sides in the competition Kojonup Green and Kojonup Gold. In the Men’s Competition, Saturday Pennant final, Kojonup Green defeated Darkan 84-80. It was a nail biting finish coming down to the last end for the result.

Dunsborough wins South West Mid-week Pennant After sneaking into the top four, courtesy of a rink win in the final game of the home and away fixtures, Dunsborough beat all three sides above them to snare the Mens’ Mid Week pennant title for the 2020/21 season. The first day of the finals saw Dunsborough defeat Brunswick in the first semi-final and after a titanic struggle that went to extra ends Eaton Blue defeated Busselton in the second semifinal. In the preliminary final battle between Busselton and Dunsborough. After 21 ends Gary Davies’ four had a comfortable win over Brian 'Boomer' Geering’s team and Wayne Coyle and Graham Evans had the scores locked at 17 all. That put Dunsborough into the grand-final, pitted against the unbeaten Eaton Blue at Eaton. In the final a number of supporters travelled to Eaton and saw Dunsborough produce a fantastic team effort to run out winners on the day. Gary Davies’ team continued their unbeaten streak to beat Rob Bowron’s four 23-17 and Wayne Coyle’s team turned around some indifferent lead up form to defeat Ray Mosele’s four 20-18. It was a great effort from Dunsborough and has really given the Bowls Section of the Country Club a huge lift. The win was suitably celebrated on arrival back at the Club.

Margaret River sweep the Leeuwin League The Leeuwin League Women’s pennant final was an all Margaret River affair with Margaret River Gold finishing in first place (48 points) and Margaret River Green second (42 points) at the end of the home and away rounds. The final was played at Margaret River Bowling Club on Tuesday 23 February. The unique competition sees teams of four players, playing 2 rinks of 10 ends of pairs, scoring 1 point a rink win and 1 point for the aggregate (total 3 points). They then combine to play 14 ends of fours with 3 points for a win and 1½ points for a draw, resulting in a combined total of 6 points for the day. Seven teams (3 Dunsborough, 2 Margaret River, 1 Cowaramup and 1 Augusta) competed over 14 rounds. The Margaret River Gold team (Yvonne Coffey, Jenny Campbell, Val Wyld and Karen Sanday) were the eventual winners, claiming 1 rink win plus the aggregate (total 2 points) in the pairs and a win in the fours (3 points) a total of 5 points to Margaret River Green (Pat Sutton, Dale McGregor, Laura Jelliman and Shirley Coffey) 1 point. Not to be outdone, the Margaret River men’s first and second division teams won their respective finals, making it a clean sweep of the Leeuwin League pennant competition for Margaret River. Club in Profile – Shackelton Bowling Club
Little club with big hearts
Shackleton is a small wheatbelt town with an approximate population of just 40 people, it has a general store and is home to Australia's Smallest Bank. It also now hosts a magnificent new Evergreen installed bowling green. The old grass green is gone (but not forgotten) as the volunteer members and locals dug down a depth of one metre to remove all the clay base and tons of sand was also replaced to help solve later movement and drainage issues. Once the site area was prepared the Evergreen team arrived for finishing levels and laying of the new surface. They worked fast in sometimes very warm conditions and were extremely efficient. Then all the bowlers and non-bowlers banded together again for busy bee afterwards to complete the reticulation, fencing, concreting, shades seating, and all the surrounds to create their very own little piece of paradise. A huge thank you to all those who volunteered with too many to list, but we hope you enjoy bowls for many more years. The Shackleton and Districts Club is alongside the new green and is open six nights a week with meals on Friday nights, this is the gathering place for many surrounding farmers, Shackleton locals and members from others nearby towns, who frequently visit this very friendly place. The very proud bunch of members have all banded together to work tirelessly to help produce their new great venue which would rival any other country venue around Australia. Although Shackleton currently are only in Second Division of the East Avon Bowling League on Sunday 21st February the club recorded Best Performing Club at the Super 7's held at the Cunderdin Bowling Club. They battled against Tammin, Quairading, Doodlakine, Cunderdin and Kellerberrin in a full round robin competition of Singles, Pairs and Fours. The competition was played in a Sets play format with tiebreakers. Shaun (Sheep) Woodward claimed the clubs first Singles Champ of Champs in over 40 years overcoming some very talented other Singles Champions, narrowly claiming the honour over Maurice Crameri with the same amount of wins but dropping one less set. Maurice as EABL President then graciously awarded the Sheep his shield and prize. To celebrate the laying of the new green the club held its annual carnival on the new surface on April 10-11 with a full field of 26 teams including 14 travelling across from Perth to play. The eventual winners were a team from Osborne Park who defeated a Tammin side in the final.

, Women s ILRR Fours
Goldfields win first Eastern ILRR The Eastern Zone Women’s ILRR Fours were held at the Civic Merredin Bowling Club and hosted by South Eastern Bowling League on the 6th and 7th February. When the zone and competition organizers would be more worried about the heat rule for a February event, this ILRR was the complete opposite and was held in rainy, windy cool conditions. Congratulations and thank you to all players who braved it out for the whole weekend. The winners for their first ever Eastern Zone Fours was Goldfields Bowling League with 6 points and 6 rink wins. Congratulations to our most eastern league in WA. The next 3 places were fought out by rink wins with Avon

South East Coastal break drought South East Coastal have won the 46th Southern Zone Inter League Round Robin, held at Gnowangerup Bowling Club, for only the second time since its inception in 1976. Their only other success was 24 years ago at Albany in 1997. In a thrilling finish, they prevailed in a tense final round to win by half a rink win. The championship was decided in the last game with both South East Costal and Lower Great Southern both finishing level on points. Both Leagues had to firstly win their respective aggregates, which they did, and then the issue would be decided by rink wins. Both won three of their four games leaving SECBL the victors by half a rink win. Aaron Smith's team of Callum Williams, Ted Young and Scott Willis were the only undefeated team in the entire competition.

• Kaitlin Tyrrell and Connor Biddle win Mixed Pairs title.
Young Guns win Mixed Pairs Two of the states rising stars combined to win the Liquor Traders Mixed State Pairs at Rossmoyne Bowling Club on May 9th 2021 with Kaitlin Tyrrell and Connor Biddle from Osborne Park Bowling Club taking the title. A strong field of 96 teams entered the event which is played in a sets play format. This was just the third time it had been held following a one year hiatus due to the covid 19 outbreak in 2020. After the first day of sectional play 24 teams remained with several of the states top bowlers progressing to the knockout rounds. In the semi-finals Tyrrell and Biddle progressed after a hard fought win over Justin Opie and Helen Morss 1-15 10-1 1-0. Lisa Featherby (Mosman Park) and Bill Brandsma (Kalamunda) had to beat the 2019 winner Blake Nairn (Cambridge) with Shari Solly (Osborne Park) 9-4 8-2 in the quarter final before taking on the 2018 winners Lee Poletti (Mosman Park) and Glenn Pauling (South Perth) also winning in straight sets 7-4 8-6. The final then saw the relatively inexperience Tyrrell, 24yo with Biddle, 25yo both looking for their first big win up against there much more experienced opponents in Featherby and Brandsma who had many major titles to their credit. However to their credit Kaitlin and Connor both held their nerves and played great bowls in the final to come out on top 6-3 7-3. Brandsma who was battling a dislocated knee cap put in a brave effort with Featherby however they could much match their younger counterparts who proved too good. Thank you to all the host clubs and match volunteers and once again congratulations to the finalists.
