POST SEASON SANFLPANDEMIC CRYSTAL BALL WRAP ... BY STEVEBY BARRETT
R
ound 1 is finally here! Which means the Football Budget has peered into football’s crystal ball and come up with its predictions for season 2020. Central District: The rebuild, to be masterminded by rookie mentor Jeff Andrews, is on. There is certainly some buzz with Daniel Menzel joining brother Troy, the Schiller brothers still prolific and journeyman James Boyd returning, a decade after playing in the Bulldogs’ last flag in 2010. Paul Thomas, the skipper in that victory, is also back at Elizabeth as an assistant coach after falling victim to the Crows’ structure overhaul in the wake of the coronavirus crisis. But with Central owning the competition’s leakiest defence last year, a return to those glory days still feels a mile away. Verdict: Bottom three again. Glenelg: The retirement of finals hero Jesse White and the defection of popular forward Josh Scott both sting. But the Bays still possess enviable, multi-pronged forward firepower - spearheaded by Ken Farmer Medallist Liam McBean and runner-up Luke Reynolds - a tactical genius in coach Mark Stone, the surprise services of premiership captain Chris Curran for up to 12 games and an unmistakable belief not seen at Tiger Land since the mid-80s. They also have Luke Partington at their disposal, the reigning Magarey Medallist and undisputed No.1 player in the competition. Verdict: Favourites to go back-to-back. North Adelaide: Last year the Roosters began their title defence behind the eight-ball - literally, with a four-point penalty - and never recovered. Without such an encumbrance this time, expect some improvement. But not another 2018 miracle. Inspirational premiership skipper Max Thring’s retirement and Aidan Tropiano’s
defection to Perth deprive North of crucial engine-room power. Expect Andrew Moore, Box Hill’s 2018 VFL flag-winning captain and a Rooster for the first time since 2013, to help fill that void and fellow ex-AFL recruit Billy Hartung to excite. An enigma. Verdict: Not quite a finalist. Norwood: After bombing out of last year’s finals meekly and getting hit by a swag of retirements, the Redlegs did what they do best secure big names. They successfully netted Richard Douglas and Ryan Bastinac, who have played more than 400 AFL games combined, and enticed Emmanuel Irra from South. With the anticipated return to full form and fitness of superstar Mitch Grigg and new skipper Matt Panos, expect Norwood to bounce back. The Round 1 blockbuster against Glenelg will tell us plenty. Verdict: Grand final-bound. South Adelaide: Flagless since 1964, the Panthers may as well have been called the Black Cats in recent seasons, such has been their ongoing lucklessness - whether by missing finals by a whisker or being crippled by the AFL draft. Stalwarts Nick Liddle and Brad Crabb have retired, while outstanding ruckman Keegan Brooksby has been given one last crack at the AFL. Joel Cross remains an elite force and he’ll get plenty of help from experienced ex-Port Adelaide defender Matthew Broadbent. Verdict: Finals but no flag. Sturt: After being around the mark for four years, including back-toback 2016-17 pennants, the good times might be over. The cancellation of the VFL saw speedster Aidyn Johnson plucked last month and Abe Davis is a boom recruit but the Double Blues were otherwise ravaged by crucial personnel losses. Retiring quartet Aidan Riley, Jack Stephens, Fraser Evans and John Greenslade left gaping midfield and
Sturt’s Zane Kirkwood. defensive holes. Hope remains though. Zane Kirkwood is among Sturt’s all-time greats and James Battersby and Sam Colquhoun are ball-winning dynamos. Verdict: Sneak into the four. West Adelaide: A combination of injuries, an unforgiving AFL midseason draft, a lack of depth and repeated fourth-quarter horror shows made 2019 West’s annus horribilis. The Bloods have since lost past club champion winner Chris Schmidt to retirement, making the redoubtable Kaine Stevens and versatile Tom Keough probably their only A-graders. It could be a long winter for Gavin Colville and his men. Verdict: Another spoon looms. Woodville-West Torrens: A beacon of stability and consistency for so long, the Eagles finally frayed last year, missing the major round for the first time since 2008. Former Sturt champion Jade Sheedy is the Eagles’ third coach in as many seasons and has a considerably youthful team at his disposal following the departures of veterans Scott Lewis (retired), James Boyd (Central) and Seb Guilhaus (MAFS). The likes of classy midfielder Jordan Foote and nuggety goalsneak James Rowe are now the faces of the new-age Eagles. The window is not yet in sight. Verdict: Will miss the four. www.sanfl.com.au

HOW COVID-19 WREAKED HAVOC ON SA FOOTY
SANFL CEO, Jake Parkinson.
M
arch 2020: summer cricket had given way to autumn and football was underway. SANFL women’s and senior trial matches had kicked off, and four men’s trial games were played between March 7 and March 14. The largest margin was 17 points. All the signs were positive for a close season. Yet the dark story of “coronavirus” was quickly escalating; what had started as a localised outbreak in China was now the threat of a global pandemic, with dark mutterings about previously unthinkable ramifications for football. Australia had confirmed its first cases as early as the Australia Day long weekend. On February 1, the nation closed its borders to China and on the following day, SA confirmed its first two cases of Covid-19. In late February, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said it would become a pandemic and Australia’s emergency response plan was triggered. By the time of the March 14 trial game in which Sturt defeated Central by 17 points, the rate of infection in Australia was doubling every three days on average. The signs were ominous. New restrictions were being announced every day, so it was with 6

a sense of inevitability that, on March 16, the bad news was delivered: “SANFL, in a united decision with the AFL and all other State Leagues, has postponed the 2020 football season in response to the coronavirus pandemic. “SANFL will delay the start of the 2020 SANFL Statewide Super League season, Reserves and U18 Torrens University Cup competitions until May 31.” More bad news quickly followed. The Statewide Super Women’s League, National Pharmacies SANFL Juniors and NAB AFL Auskick were all postponed until May 31. The U16 Torrens University Cup, which was already underway, was cancelled. SURVIVAL MODE These difficult decisions were essential to safeguard the health and safety of players, coaches, staff, supporters and the broader community. Nevertheless, it was a devastating blow for clubs, with the loss of revenue threatening their survival. Many staff lost their jobs or were stood down. Those who remained had to step up to hold everything together. The pressure was enormous. SANFL CEO Jake Parkinson said the competition was facing one of the biggest challenges in its 143-year history.
“There is no winner today. But we must do what’s needed to keep people safe and healthy and get us through this most challenging time. “SANFL is focussed on survival for the organisation, the SANFL clubs and affiliated leagues and clubs across the entire football community. Every club will be important to our game when we are again able to safely return to playing footy.” Behind the scenes, SANFL was working with its interstate counterparts, the AFL, State and Federal Governments, and the World Health Organisation. Health and safety were priorities - but the burning question was always: When can we play footy again? This question was posed against a backdrop of worsening conditions around the world. SA was not an epicentre but neither was it immune from the mounting death toll. More bad news came on April 7, when the 2020 SA Country Football Championships were cancelled. The May 31 restart date was intact but confidence was waning that it could be achieved. The toll on the SANFL clubs was enormous. This was the first time since World War II that football had been postponed. With no revenue coming into football, each club undertook fundraising initiatives – while
standing united to ensure that every club would survive. April 30 marked SANFL’s 143rd birthday but celebrations were subdued. All eyes were on securing the future. Five days later, on May 12, the League confirmed the Port Adelaide and Adelaide Football Clubs would not field teams in the SANFL Statewide Super League competition in 2020. This followed the AFL’s decision not to allow AFLlisted players to play in state leagues for the remainder of the 2020 AFL season. Jake Parkinson said while it was a disappointing outcome for the two AFL clubs and their supporters, SANFL now had further clarity on its 2020 season. “We now know it will be an eightteam SANFL competition in 2020 and we can move forward with our planning for a 14-minor round fixture to commence as soon as restrictions enable us to,” he said. Nobody was surprised when the May 31 restart date was pushed out. The fate of football – and the fate of society and the economy - was now in the hands of emergency and health services. AT home, in governmentmandated isolation to contain the spread of Covid-19, fans turned to history, reliving the glory days, watching flashbacks and debating the greatest games and players of all time. Sport around the world had ground to a halt. Sports programs – with no match-related news to talk about – were now debating whether or not children should go to school.
More good news followed on May 28. The 2020 SANFL Statewide Super League season would start on Saturday, June 27! The details included: • A 14-minor round season. • The first two rounds would be played at Adelaide Oval, “without spectators and under strict protocols within the State Government’s COVID-19 Step 2 easing of restrictions roadmap.” • Rounds one and two would be double-headers played on Saturday and Sunday. • A three-week finals series between the top four would commence on the weekend of October 3-4, with the Grand Final to be held on the weekend of October 17-18. • A decision on venues for future home and away matches would be determined closer to the season start date. • Further details of the fixture to be released by mid-June. • SANFL Statewide Super Women’s League, SANFL Reserves and Under 18s Torrens University Cup competitions would also start on Saturday, June 27. That was the good news. The bad news was that spectators would not be permitted to attend. A cap of up to 80 players, umpires, trainers and officials would be allowed on the ground. However, most people could sense that conditions were quickly changing. SA was going for weeks without recording a new case.
After weeks of conjecture, the League received State Government approval for a structured return to contact training in groups of 20 for SANFL and Community Football from Monday, June 1. “The circumstances and restrictions surrounding COVID-19 are evolving and improving rapidly and the continued support and efforts of the entire football community will help us continue on the road back to play,” said Jake Parkinson. In the second week of June, SA Premier, Steven Marshall, revealed that crowds of up to 500 people would be permitted at football matches in SA from July 3, providing there was no significant outbreak of Covid-19. The 500 limit was subject to social distancing, with no more than one person per four square metres and a distance of 1.5 metres required between spectators. SANFL has now received approval for crowds of up to 5,000 to attend Round 1 following the success of 2,000 fans attending the AFL Showdown at Adelaide Oval on June 13. So here we are, with round one now kicking off. Despite the deep financial damage that has been inflicted on clubs, this weekend is a time for rejoicing. For now, we have beaten the pandemic and the sounds of football – the cheers, the chants and the passion - are once more reverberating around ovals.
TURNING POINT For a variety of reasons, the toll from the disease in South Australia was less than most other parts of Australia and the world. While New York, the UK, Italy and the like were still grappling with the ravages of the disease, Australia was seeing the ‘green shoots of recovery’. May 18 was a bright point. This was the date the eight SANFL clubs, as well as many community clubs, were able to don their boots again and hit the training track, albeit with restrictions on contact and the number of people that could be involved. www.sanfl.com.au

BREAKOUT SEASONS AHEAD? BY ROBERT LAIDLAW
E
ach season a new bunch of hopefuls either use previous experience in the league team or just continue their natural development to become breakout players in the SANFL. The big question is who will be each club’s best hope to take that important step in their careers this year? Reigning premier Glenelg has several young players waiting in the wings, including Callum Park, who has good initial speed and can take a good grab. At 189cm, Park has height on his side and only needs to fill out a bit to become a key addition for the Bays. Playing division one baseball in the summer has probably helped add some strength. He split time between Glenelg’s reserves and under 18s in 2019, as well as representing SA under 18s. It could be argued that Cole Gerloff had a breakout season last year but on his rate of improvement over the past few years and his endurance levels, expect a lot more out of the Norwood forward, especially if he gets more time in the midfield. Josh Shute has been impressive for Sturt in his development and is cherry ripe to make an impact at league level in 2020. Last season Shute played well for SA in the under 18 national championships, while at Reserves level with the Double Blues was a
10
www.sanfl.com.au
consistent ball winner from the wing. South Adelaide has a versatile youngster who looks ready to step up to the big league and play an important part with the club in teenager Zac Dumesny. He represented the state last season as well as his country, for an Australia versus New Zealand under 17 clash. Dumesny is capable of playing back or forward but is better suited to the wing, with his skill set and speed an asset. He was the Panthers’ leading possession winner in last season’s under 18 grand final loss to the Eagles. Another under 17 Australian rep last season was Taj Schofield, who plays with the Eagles. His father Jarrad played with Port Adelaide in the AFL as well as Central District in the SANFL. A ball magnet, Schofield was a premiership player for WA club Subiaco in the colts two years ago and last season was a member of the Eagles’ under 18 flag-winners, so he is ready to make an impact at league level in 2020. When Central District supporters think of a pocket-dynamo with speed and agility, and wears number 44, the name John Platten comes to mind. Now there is a new candidate
in Corey Durdin, who also wears that famous number 44 Bulldog jumper. Durdin has been a star at under 16 and under 18 state level for SA, and last season made his league debut with the Bulldogs. With that experience under his belt, 2020 looks like being a breakout season for the teenager. Although restricted in game time at North Adelaide because of school commitments with PAC, Karl Finlay made a huge impact with the SA under 18 team and looks a likely regular with the Roosters this season, after making his debut in 2019. At 192cm tall and 88kg, Finlay has a good body size to fit in down back or up forward in a key position role, with his one-on-one work a feature of his game. West Adelaide is one club with a history of producing great players who would go on into the AFL ranks, with young ruckman Riley Thilthorpe likely to be another. Thilthorpe played six league games last season, although hampered by injuries and is ready to make his mark in 2020, perhaps as a tall forward target who helps out in ruck, rather than predominantly in ruck.
“THE BIG QUESTION IS WHO WILL BE EACH CLUB’S BEST HOPE TO TAKE THAT IMPORTANT STEP IN THEIR CAREERS THIS YEAR?”

LIVING THE DREAM BY PETER CORNWALL

on’t fret, your time is near. SANFL supporters who have been longing to see their club’s colours on top of the West End Brewery chimney have been living the dream in the past five years. With players coming and going at a frenetic rate and sides progressing from pretenders to contenders like never before, there’s hope for every club - and every fan. You don’t have to have been knocking on the door for even one season and there’s no talk these days about having to lose a grand final before you can win one. Rebuilding? Forget it. leadership and players who are willing to work hard, work together and play with no ceiling and any drought can be smashed. South Adelaide has been rocked by last-minute player losses to the AFL in the past year. Panthers fans, without a premiership since 1964, are tearing their hair out after superstar ruckman Keegan Brooksby was snatched away by Hawthorn in March. But a premiership has never been closer for all clubs. Just a decade ago, all-conquering Central District snared its ninth premiership in 11 seasons. But, incredibly, the Bulldogs now are the seventh-most-recent flag winners,
the Eagles, Norwood (three), West, Sturt (two), North and Glenelg winning them since the Doggies’ remarkable dynasty ended. West Adelaide languished in ninth place in 2014, not having won a premiership since 1983. Bloods fans were pinching themselves after coach Mark Mickan orchestrated a stunning grand final win just a year later. Sturt jumped from eighth in 2015 to the flag in ’16. Coached by Martin Mattner, who had starred in the Blues’ previous flag in 2002, they completed back-to-back flags in 2017 - the first time they had achieved the feat since winning their fifth flag in a row way back in 1970. North Adelaide “won” the
…to this
wooden spoon in 2017. But Josh Carr’s Roosters won the premiership just a year later coming from fifth at the end of the minor round. Their flag ended a club-record 27-year wait. Glenelg finished sixth in 2018, not having made the finals since 2011 and facing a premiership drought that extended back to the heady days of grand final wins under Graham Cornes in 1985-86. Mark Stone’s men proved anything is possible to storm to a stunning 28-point win in the premiership decider against Port Adelaide, the Bays completing one of the most dramatic rags-to-riches triumphs of all. Glenelg’s fans have been living the dream, taking unnecessary detours to meander past and admire the black-and-gold colours on the Port Rd brewery chimney,
just three years after the club might have closed its doors for good. Glenelg launched its Save The Tigers debt demolition campaign in June 2016, the threat of extinction all too real having amassed more than $3 million in debts. As if that wasn’t bad enough, just six months later the roof of Glenelg Oval’s HY Sparks grandstand was ripped off in a storm. There was no choice but to demolish the 80-year-old stand, which already had seen better days but which housed the changerooms for home and away teams, the Tigers’ players’ gym, medical and meeting rooms, a coaches’ box and timekeepers’ box. Club president Nick Chigwidden and chief executive Glenn Elliott directed the transformation of training, gym and changeroom facilities now up there with the best in the SANFL, the freak wind that
seemed to have caused such devastation later dubbed The Perfect Storm. And 2019 was just about perfect, a profit recorded for the fourth year in a row and Tigers fans out in force in the bumper 39,000 grand final crowd, SA’s sleeping giant well-and-truly awakened. Chigwidden admitted when the club’s financial crisis saw it in “serious, serious trouble”, its longterm vision was to win a flag by its league centenary in 2021. “A flag at that point seemed a world away … to win one this quickly is unbelievable,” he said. The Tigers will be coming hard, desperate to repeat the historic back-to-back flags of the ‘80s. But they have proved to everyone anything is possible. Keep believing. You could be living the dream sooner than you think. www.sanfl.com.au

SANFL RESERVES PREVIEW BY PETER CORNWALL
WORTH THE WAIT
I
t was a 21-year wait for a Norwood reserves flag. And now, after what Redlegs seconds premiership coach Gavin Hughes describes as “the world’s longest pre-season,” another nine months have passed. Finally it’s time to get out there and defend their hardearned flag. “It feels like it’s been forever,” said Hughes, noting a tough pre-season training schedule had finally culminated in a trial game against West Adelaide before the COVID-19 pandemic struck. “We want to play footy, to play games,” he said. Hughes believes there is strong depth at The Parade, “excited about the young guys who are coming through pushing up for league selection”. Hughes, who played in the Legs’ 2014 league premiership, knows his role as reserves coach is more of a development one, “about how many kids can come through” but to win the flag was “a nice reward for the hard effort the guys put in”. The Redlegs had plenty to do when they were struggling in sixth place with a 3-4 win-loss record after Round 7. Hughes admits he “thought it might be one of those years”, thinking his side might “scrape through (to finals) midrange”. Instead, the Legs stormed to the minor premiership, finishing with 13 wins and five losses, one win ahead of Sturt. “We seemed to have six or seven changes each week, so to win so consistently was pretty impressive,” Hughes said. In the current climate it’s hard to tip how this year’s reserves competition might take shape but even last season the fight for the flag was anyone’s guess. One epic game – the second semi-final between Norwood and Sturt – proved critical. “I’ve never seen anything like it,” Hughes recalled of the clash at Richmond that wasn’t 30
www.sanfl.com.au
decided until after the final siren of extra-time. Hughes thought the Legs hadn’t played that well but had scrambled and scraped to force the clash into extra-time. When Tom Condon goaled for the Blues for the only score of the first five-minute extra period, Hughes felt the Legs may have missed a golden opportunity. But a rushed behind late in the “sixth quarter” made the difference less than a goal. When the siren went, Sturt was five points up. But the ball was in the hands of Norwood’s Luke Surman, within scoring distance but on a testing angle. “We thought it was all over, then the big fella took a mark and the siren went,” Hughes said. “His goalkicking had not been that consistent late in the year and we thought anything could happen.” Surman proved himself the man for the moment, striking it sweetly and the Norwood coaches’ box “erupted”. “The emotion of that win carried on at training in the next two weeks – we had a really positive mindset,” Hughes said. There’s a fine line between pleasure and pain and the next week Sturt was bundled out by the
Eagles in the preliminary final. The Legs were looking to avoid a seventh successive grand final loss but they had learned plenty from the previous year’s defeat at the hands of North Adelaide. And former Hawthorn ruckman Surman stepped up again in a powerful grand final performance, winning the Bob Lee Medal for best-afield in the Legs’ 19-point win. “He had been playing up forward but at the back end of the year we threw him into ruck and he dominated,” Hughes said. “He was magnificent in the grand final … he’s got that much talent.” Surman, who had battled injuries earlier in the season, picked up 21 disposals, 11 clearances and 18 hit-outs. Dylan Stephens, drafted to Sydney with the Swans’ first pick, was all class, while Reserves Magarey Medallist Jed Spence, who had been playing with Payneham Norwood Union early in the season, capped a remarkable year with a game-high 27 disposals. And Hughes had fond memories of Cody Szust’s Eddie Betts-like goal from the boundary “and the energy he created”. Now the wait’s over, there’s plenty of energy at The Parade again, Hughes’ men primed to get back into it.

WOMEN’S FOOTY PREVIEW
A WIN FOR THE AGES BY PETER CORNWALL
North’s Hannah Ewings has reason to celebrate against the Panthers.
Y
ou’re only as good as your last game. That saying will mean plenty to WoodvilleWest Torrens – even after a 107day wait. The Eagles, in their second Statewide Super Women’s League season, finally broke through for their first win – after 13 losses in a row – on Friday the 13th of March. Having come close on too many occasions, they beat Glenelg by 25 points. Within four days of the historic win, the season went into lockdown because of the coronavirus pandemic. Now it’s fair to say Tess Baxter’s team is itching to get back out there. “Thank God we ended up getting that win,” said Baxter, wondering how difficult the 107 days without footy would have been if her side was still winless. “I was happy, proud and relieved we could get that win,” she recalled. But there are new challenges ahead for Baxter’s talented young line-up. “A lot’s happened since 32
www.sanfl.com.au
then and every team is going to be a bit different,” she admitted. That’s because the SANFL Women’s League is set for a major boost with a host of Adelaide’s AFLW stars playing in the second half of the season. With the competition resuming with Round 5 on June 26-27, SANFLW clubs are rolling out the welcome mat for players such as dual All-Australian Ebony Marinoff and this year’s Crows AFLW club champion Anne Hatchard. “It’s a great challenge for our kids,” Baxter said of some huge potential match-ups. “There is more excitement around, it lifts the standard of the competition and it should create some buzz.” The Eagles gain a boost of their own with experienced Crows AFLW midfielder Renee Forth aligned to the club. And she already has been making a big impact on the training track. “She’s been fantastic,” Baxter said, noting her presence “makes people run faster, work harder”.
Forth’s communication with the youngsters in the team has been outstanding. “She’s a really experienced football head,” Baxter said. That’s something the Eagles have had in limited supply after entering the league in its third season with Central District, the other six clubs already established with the pick of the State’s experienced players. Baxter looked to the next wave of talent, focusing on strong juniors coming through, playing lots of kids. There were a few big losses, some costly 10-minute lapses of concentration but plenty of learning and improvement. And a couple of shattering losses to West Adelaide – by three points and five points. Then this season started with a four-point loss to reigning premier South, a one-point loss to 2017 premier Norwood – losing the lead for the first time with just 50 seconds left – and an eight-point defeat against Sturt, before the breakthrough Glenelg game. “I feel
like we’ve come a long way, trying to teach the team game, where people have roles to play and they contribute in that way,” Baxter said. There was no better example of that than in the win against the Bays when first-gamers Jaida Tabb and Charlotte Dolan didn’t have a heap of possessions but tallied a staggering 23 tackles between them, playing a huge role in creating pressure around the ball. Baxter, a young coach at 33, enjoys watching players learn their footy, loves the strategies of the modern game and hopes she is “building something”. The Eagles definitely are building. And there’s been quite a long build-up to Round 5. Let’s recap what’s happened in the first four rounds. 1. North Adelaide (won 4, lost 0) Roosters boss Krissie Steen knows what it takes to coach a SANFL Women’s premiership side, having steered South Adelaide to the flag in 2018. And she has a strong North Adelaide outfit on top in her first year at Prospect, having taken over a side that has been so-near-yet-so-far in the league’s first three seasons, making two grand finals and a preliminary final without taking the final step. In the first three rounds the Roosters beat Glenelg, Central and West convincingly before the expected nail-biter in the top-ofthe-table clash with South. It took a coast-to-coast goal finished off by spearhead Kelly Barltrop, last year’s SANFLW leading goalkicker, with two minutes to play for North to edge out the Panthers by four points at Noarlunga. South’s 2018 premiership captain Kristi Harvey – now wearing North colours – like her coach, had a happy return to her former home ground, snaring a game-high eight marks and consistently repelling attacks. Exciting forward Hannah Ewings was the opening round Powerade Breakthrough Player nomination
after her impressive debut against Glenelg. The Whyalla 15-year-old booted 1.2 to go with her 12 disposals. Ruck Bek Rasheed, daughter of Roosters premiership great Mick Redden, also debuted, collecting seven disposals and 14 hit-outs. Led by an eye-catching four-goal haul from Ashleigh Woodland, North restricted Central to just 1.1. And there’s a Rooster booster on the way, North being strengthened by dynamic Anne Hatchard, who most recently played in the SANFLW under Steen with South in 2018. 2. South Adelaide (won 3, lost 1) The Panthers haven’t been used to losing in their three seasons in the Statewide Super Women’s League. So the defending back-to-back premiers will have been stewing over their last game, an unlucky loss to North. When Rooster Barltrop goaled with two minutes to play – a long shot that took a lucky bounce through the big sticks – it was the first time South had been behind all night and there was an added touch of controversy, Panthers defenders claiming the ball had been touched off the boot. Rick Watts’ South stood up in the opening game of the season when its premiership flag was unfurled at Noarlunga, refusing to concede to the fast-finishing Eagles, a desperate touch on the last line of defence critical in a four-point win. Classy Czenya Cavouras led the way with 20 disposals and 11 tackles. Last year’s Powerade Breakthrough Player Teah Charlton was everywhere, racking up 24 disposals and first-year player Courtney Barry had 20 disposals and 10 tackles as the Panthers crunched Sturt by 34 points. Flamehaired Jess Kirk was a livewire in attack booting 3.2 and she continued on her merry way with four goals as the Panthers overpowered Norwood by 30 points. South may have to wait for
Montana McKinnon to overcome a foot injury but Crows Nikki Gore, Nicole Campbell and Cavouras will all have an impact as the Panthers chase a premiership hat-trick. 3. West Adelaide (won 2, lost 1, drawn 1) Some talented Crows will boost the Bloods’ finals charge, Westies having access to home-grown talent in Rachelle Martin, Chelsea Biddell and Maddie Newman, while Northern Territorian Stevie-Lee Thompson is set to make her SANFLW debut. West showed it would be right in the mix when the league kicked off way back in February, crunching Sturt by 21 points and Glenelg by 40 points The Bloods, under new coach Mark Moody, were on the attack from the start against the Blues, racking up the first seven scoring shots. After making her Crows AFLW debut the previous week, tenacious midfielder Martin chalked up 15 possessions and 11 tackles, while Abbie Ballard earned 27 disposals and nine clearances. West restricted the Bays to just 1.2 in Round 2, Martin collecting a match-high 21 disposals. North had the better of West by 21 points in Round 3 but the Bloods lamented a lost opportunity in their most recent game, a draw against Norwood after leading by 15 points at three-quarter-time. Martin (20 disposals and nine tackles) was at it again, classy Adelaide AFLW defender Newman earned 18 possessions and Crows 2017 AFLW premiership forward Rachael Killian finished with 17 disposals. And Melanie Elsegood bagged a couple of goals, including a brilliant checkside finish from the pocket. 4. Sturt (won 2, lost 2) Sturt snatched a spot in the top four with two successive wins before the break but it looks a tough road ahead to qualify for finals for the first time. Bruce Dawes’ side www.sanfl.com.au
33
South Adelaide’s Jess Kirk has been among the goals this season. was making great strides but other teams will be strengthened by the return of Crows stars to their ranks while the Blues don’t pick up anyone. The good news with the season delay is inspirational Crows 2017 premiership player Georgia Bevan has had the chance to shrug off a thigh strain. The Blues’ policy to go largely with local youth was paying dividends with wins against the Eagles and Bulldogs. Emerging midfielder Izzy Kuiper earned the Round 3 Powerade Breakthrough Player nomination after collecting 18 disposals and six tackles against the Eagles. Recruited from Mount Lofty, Kuiper is a member of the Statewide Super SA under-18 Girls’ Academy. Co-captains Bevan (20 disposals and six tackles) and Maya Rigter (14 disposals, seven tackles) created plenty of headaches for the Eagles at the stoppages. As Sturt followed up with a gritty 11-point win against Central, 34
www.sanfl.com.au
another Baby Blue was displaying a bright future. AFLW Academy player Zoe Prowse, who had gathered 14 disposals, 16 hit-outs and a goal against the Eagles, earned a gamehigh 23 disposals, 10 clearances and another goal against the Dogs. 5. Norwood (won 1, lost 2, drawn 1) The Redlegs, winners of the first SANFLW flag in 2017, are always around the mark and they showed why as their never-say-die spirit snatched a draw against West. Facing a 15-point three-quartertime deficit they booted 2.3 and kept the Bloods scoreless in a heart-stopping final term. Shae Hiscock coolly locked the scores at 3.5 apiece after earning a free kick 15m out. Norwood already had produced a great escape in Round 2, not leading at any stage until Lindsay Bigg booted a goal with 50 seconds left to edge out the Eagles by one point. Bigg pounced to intercept a defensive pass from her Eagles
opponent, snared the mark, played on and finished on the run from 10m to the delight of her team-mates. Northern Territory recruit Mattea Breed earned the Round 2 Powerade Breakthrough Player nomination. Tallying a game-high 21 disposals, the 18-year-old showed great maturity in her second league game. Breed produced six inside-50 entries, two of her direct passes resulting in scoring opportunities for veteran Jo Hill. Chris Howie’s Redlegs will welcome back with open arms last year’s SANFLW best-and-fairest Najwa Allen after her first AFLW campaign. 6. Woodville-West Torrens (won 1, lost 3) A sensational second half lifted the Eagles to their historic first win against the Tigers. Tess Baxter’s charges came from a goal down at half-time to boot 5.1 while keeping the Bays scoreless in the final two terms. After talented forward Kiana
Coach Tess Baxter and her young Eagles are building for the future. Lee put the Eagles in front in the third quarter with her third goal, a purple patch from fellow goalsneak Nicole Collie ruled out any lastminute nerves. Collie, recruited from North in the off-season, booted the final three majors of the match to kick off celebrations. Crows-listed ruck Rhiannon Metcalfe led the way with 15 disposals. Look for experienced Crows midfielder Renee Forth to now provide a steadying influence for the young Eagles line-up. 7. Glenelg (won 1, lost 3) With dual premiership Crows superstar Ebony Marinoff winning plenty of the footy the Tigers stormed into finals last year and just fell short of North in a thrilling semi-final. Marinoff, Caitlin Gould, Eloise Jones and Deni Varnhagen are huge inclusions from the Crows for the second half of the season, so watch out again for Jason Fairall’s side. Tall, strong-marking Gould lifted
the Bays to their only win of the season so far, an emphatic 50-point success against Central. Playing her first SANFLW game in Round 3 after a fortnight with the Crows, Gould bagged 4.4 to go with her teamhigh 17 disposals. In just her second full season of Australian football, Gould – a volleyball convert – was dominant as the Bays restricted the Dogs to just 1.4 while piling on 8.12. Zoe Smith, Madisyn Freeman, Lucy Armitage and Jordana Bradley contributed strongly while Soriah Moon, an SA district basketballer with Sturt, showed promise in ruck while calmly slotting a major from a tough angle. The Bays crashed back to earth in Round 4 as the Eagles claimed their historic first win. But there was a positive, midfielder Tessa Kohn displaying her immense promise in her fourth game with a game-high 18 disposals. Recruited from Morphettville Park, the 18-year-old was nominated for the Powerade
Breakthrough Player award. 8. Central District (won 1, lost 3) Shaun Ribbons’ Dogs couldn’t have had a better start to the season, Katelyn Rosenzweig inspiring an upset four-point win against Norwood. Back full-time at Elizabeth after a season on the Crows’ AFLW list, the 2018 SANFLW leading goalkicker showed off her immense talent with a gamebreaking four majors. Nippy halfforward Latiah Huynh collected 15 disposals while Dogs defender Kimberley Fry again showed she is one of the best in the competition at reading the play across half-back. But Central managed just one goal in each of its next two games, beaten by 54 points by North and 50 points by Glenelg. The Dogs battled hard against Sturt before falling 11 points short, Shelby Smith impressing with 15 touches and 10 tackles. Central will look to versatile Crows tall Sarah Allan for a boost. www.sanfl.com.au
