ith the start of each New Year comes the opportunity to reflect
and renew. Many of us take some time to assess the past year, and plan for the one ahead. And though for some, resolutions
are simply just too cliché, it’s as great a time as any to evaluate our roles as parents and care-givers.
I’ve never been particularly successful at resolution-keeping much past March. The heart
really is willing, but then life happens, the Mommy brains kicks in, and then before you
know it, another New Year approaches. So a few years ago, I decided that in lieu of annual resolutions, I’d shorten the designated time frame and attempt monthly resolutions. Well, to
cut a long story short, I’m now down to making daily decisions! But you know what? These
.
work for me. I set goals that are reachable. And if I fail to reach them, I don’t feel like I have
to wait an eternity to try again. My ‘New Year’ comes with each tomorrow; and thankfully, those come every day.
As parents, we all want to see our children grow well, and forge their own paths in the world. I encourage you to take each step on your
parenting journey as it comes. Our best intentions need renewal each day as those little ones often “lick us for six”, forcing us to re-evaluate
those ’perfect’ plans on a daily basis. Let’s be forgiving of ourselves, roll with the punches and trust our instincts. No matter how many guides you have, sift through the information and make your own ‘resolutions’ based on what works best for you and your family – and renew as you deem fit.
I’m sure the late, great Bob Marley is beaming with pride as he sees his first born raise his own children. In this issue, we spend some
‘family time’ with a son of Jamaica’s soil, Ziggy Marley. He’s insightful, witty and real, and we’re “loving the life” out of his new album
which gives us cause to reflect on some of the incredible melodies our region has produced. We’re blessed to have the wise words of celebrity Doula Latham Thomas grace our pages. Latham may be the busiest lady in the baby business, but she made the time to give us some quick tips on achieving ‘your best pregnancy ever’!
We’re proud to present our own “go-to-guide” for your latest addition – stages and safety, and so much in between. We’re chock full of
information, from learning your baby’s milestones, to how to prepare them for the first day of pre-school. It is incredible how time flies and
how quickly our babies grow, so our own Director of Photography shares how to “Memory Bank”, and capture precious moments for posterity. Great advice for taking great pictures!
We were captivated by Lauren, our little cover girl, who, paralleled in an adult world, would certainly have branded us as groupies. Lauren
had us wrapped around her little finger, [imagine the song playing in the background], “…cause she’s got personality, [Walk!] personality, [Talk!] personality, [Smile!] personality, [Charm!] personality…”
Thank you to all our readers near and far who are affirming our role as the Caribbean’s premier parenting publication. Thank you for inviting
us into your homes and families. Our online readership now spans more than 21 Caribbean islands, the United States, Canada and the UK, and reaches as far as Abu Dhabi and Qatar in the Middle East, Australia and Asia! We’re excited as we grow, and look forward to widening our reach across the region and beyond. Read on folks. We’ve got so much in store, and an incredible year planned ahead. Here’s to 2013!

Your Blissful Birth Birth is a dance. Along the way a cocktail of

that is masterfully designed to make you and your baby fall in love.
Our culture views birth as a violent, painful, and disempowering experience. For generations women have taken a back seat when it
comes to childbirth, allowing modern obstetrics to push a technocratic
birth model that has little respect for the power of the female body,
and now it’s time to reclaim our bodies as sacred sites and to trust
our inner divas who know exactly how to give birth. I know birth to

'A' IS FOR...AVOCADO • Folic Acid
• Magnesium
• Vitamin C FACT: In your first trimester it’s especially important to top
up your folic acid - to help your baby’s central nervous system
form. It’s been shown to lower risk of birth defects. Spruce up your daily salads with some avocado chunks. Your baby (and body) will love you for it!
'B' IS FOR...BREADFRUIT .
• Omega 3’s & 6’s • Vitamin C • Zinc
FACT: Omega 3 deficiencies have been shown to contribute to postpartum depression. Getting enough
of these healthy fats may prevent pre-term labor and reduce
your risk of pre eclampsia. Omega 3’s are also great for after birth - contributing to breast milk production. Breadfruit is also high in fiber, and can help ‘get things moving’! Grab some breadfruit chips for a guilt free snack.
'C' IS FOR...CALLALOO • Folic acid
• Iron
• Calcium FACT: Let’s help get those strong bones built! Calcium is vital for that. Iron is essential for red blood cell production, and a healthy supply of oxygen for energy
and growth to cells. Callaloo is a Caribbean favourite with incredible benefits
helping to prevent that pesky anaemia which sometimes haunts pregnant women.

usiness Executive and Mummy to 2 year old Morgan is in full bloom as she 'doubles up' and prepares to welcome her twins. Still early in her pregnancy, b3 joined our Glama Mama as she went in search of high fashion - without doing the traditional maternity wear. We're going into
fashion overload (on the double!) with this issue’s Glama Mama Bradlee Powell.
She's styled by the absolutely on-point Fidge Fab - the Jamaican NY based stylist
who's making, shall we say, major "ruffles" in the fashion industry with her eye for current and future trends. According to Bradlee: “Juggling being a Mummy, with chic and comfortable style WHILE pregnant with twins is sometimes challenging. Comfort is priority number one!”. We took Bradlee a 'toops' (as we say in Jamaica) out of her comfort zone, raised her hemline a bit, and stepped out in sweet, sweet [Foot] Candy style!
What's your normal style? Are you a conservative, highly stylish, or in between? I’m definitely in between. I tend to go for pieces that will be in style for years, not the latest trend of the season. 20 | BUMP • BABY & BEYOND b3 |

How is your maternity style with this pregnancy? This knee-length dress is different for me. It's short but I love it! I try to find pieces that are in style and that flatter my pregnant figure. Maxi dresses are a staple for me.
What are your top three Mummy must haves? A great diaper bag- I still use my Petunia
Pickle Bottom. A cute pair of flats or sandals for when I’m on the run, and wet wipes!

What style item can you NOT do without? Mascara - great eyelashes make a world of difference!

Peanut Punch
It’s a Caribbean favourite, said to be good for a variety of ailments and, shall we say, ‘enhancements’. Well, courtesy of Chris De La Rosa of CaribbeanPot.com, b3 is sharing this super easy recipe - it’s a simple solution to a sudden craving, sans the heavy blending the ‘traditional’ ingredients require! Try this out, it’s perfect for two and rich in protein and calcium to boot!
.
INGREDIENTS 8-10 cubes of ice
2 tablespoons peanut butter
(smooth or chunky – your choice) 1 cup milk (whole)
1 tablespoon condensed milk
DIRECTIONS Use a blender or a magic bullet. Place the ice in first.
This way the condensed milk and peanut butter will not
settle on the bottom where the blades can’t reach. After
the ice, put in the peanut butter, followed by the milk
and condensed milk. Blend for about 30 to 40 seconds
until everything breaks down and is incorporated
evenly. There you have it! A filling, delicious, creamy and frothy drink. Serve immediately to make use of that ice you crushed!

- dash nutmeg

reating your baby’s
nursery is an exciting time in your nesting

inner
artist
can come to life,
manifesting itself in a beautiful, peaceful space for your new baby-with your own unique touches. Mary Bauer (of Bratt Décor) shares
some incredible inspiration rooms on the next few pages. The nursery is where you’ll spend
a lot of time together, at least for the first few weeks of baby’s life. Sleeping will be the
activity highest on baby’s list of things to do, followed closely by nursing. It suits you well
to make the space as comfortable as possible.
Forget the typical fads and cartoon characters
that people traditionally go for. Open yourself
up to the incredible options that will give your baby a strong and stylish start.
Choose a focal point, something that stands
out for you, or something that holds great
sentimental meaning for you. Are you going traditional, modern or vintage? Whether it’s
an heirloom piece, baby’s crib, your design
elements or even baby’s bedding…your focal point will help you to focus on your ultimate
goal and set the tone for the entire décor
palette. Decide whether you’re going genderspecific or gender-neutral. A gender-neutral
base is very easy to accessorise, and makes any
unforeseen changes easy to execute. 30 | BUMP • BABY & BEYOND b3 |

CONSIDER OUR FIVE KEY POINTS WHEN PUTTING TOGETHER YOUR IDEAL NURSERY:
Sleeping – Your baby’s crib must be certified. To be sure that your crib has been tested, and passed
industry standards, look for the Juvenile Products
Manufacturing Association certification. Most cribs sold and used in the Caribbean, are products
imported from the USA or Canada and the JPMA is the governing body for these regions. Be cautious when using ‘hand-me down’ cribs as safety standards
have changed, and most certainly improved with the keen attention of regulatory bodies. If you're
repainting or staining a 'hand-me-down' or heirloom
piece, ensure that the products used are safe. (check
out our paint guide on page 26). To prevent your
baby's head from slipping through or getting stuck,
the slats on your crib should be no more than 2 3/8

inches. Crib sheets must fit snugly on the mattress.
Invest in at least 2 great mattress pads to protect the
surface of the mattress - accidents will happen, and
this makes cleaning up as easy as tossing it along with your sheets in the machine.

innocent about the colour white.
It’s a wonderful choice for a
nursery. It’s gender neutral, soft,
and creates a perfect palette for your unique
style. When creating an all-white space, texture and varying shades are key to create
interest. The hues should be compatible, and
not more than a shade different. The walls will
embrace the space, so decide if you want quiet
space or an active space. For a quieter space,
opt for a linen white or ivory. For a bolder look,
choose white furnishings that bring the style
you want to the room. Minimal lines will add
a more modern look, and curves will give your space timeless appeal.
Every great nursery needs a fantastic rocker,
and with so many available, you can add real
designer style. Custom fabric choices can
add exciting texture to your space. Even in an all-white space, some pop of colour will
bring the whites to life. Here we opted for
rich browns, both in the floor and the frames.
Contrast adds interest without detracting from the purity of the space. The overall affect is
sublime sophistication. It’s a space that will nurture not only baby, but mummy as well.

How often do you exercise An average of 5 times per week.
BUMP
What is your maternity exercise routine No routine during pregnancy #1. At that time I yielded to the
popular view that it’s safer not to exercise during pregnancy.
For pregnancy # 2, I did 1 hour swimming sessions about 3 – 4
times per week. I often described those sessions as amazingly therapeutic for both mind and body. With this pregnancy
(# 3), I took to walking. I pretty much continued my prepregnancy exercise routine with a few modifications. I even surprised myself with by continuing with the rigorous routine
of one hour interval sprint training on the steep inclines of
Mountain Spring. I did this for 7 months and then slowed
things down by training on a treadmill and on a gym cycle,
as well as training with my dumb bells. For month 9, I did light outdoor walking with dumb bells in hand.
Any special eating habits? .
I do get sugar and carb cravings sometimes. I usually take
those cravings as a sign that I need to top up on my vitamins.
During pregnancy #2, I had anemia and when I found out
I realized that must have accounted for all the extra cookies, chocolates and fried plantains I was eating. So, now as soon as I feel that almost uncontrollable desire for cookies or bread
I check myself to see whether I have missed a dose or two of
my vitamins and that’s usually the case. This time around I
find I don’t really like chicken or raw vegetables; not quite an aversion but my taste buds just don’t fancy them.
What would you say is your fitness level (a) beginner (b) moderate (c) advanced I’m definitely advanced. I absolutely love the fitness lifestyle.
Thankfully, my husband and children are also like-minded and

Your best trimester, and why? The second trimester was my best. Funny enough, when I became pregnant this time around I was still trying to lose the
“baby fat” from the last pregnancy so I was on a pretty intense
exercise program (running and weight lifting) that I continued
into this pregnancy. By the time I got to second trimester
I had peaked in terms of fitness level. The high endorphin levels from exercise combined with what is often described as
“2nd trimester boost in energy” made me feel very happy and energetic most of the times. I felt “high”. I felt blessed to be
pregnant, healthy and fit. I want every woman to know that
exercise can exponentially improve their pregnancy experience. 40 | BUMP • BABY & BEYOND b3 |

Fabulous & Fertile

In a time not so long ago, women were bombarded by ideas of a ticking time bomb; more commonly referred to as, the biological clock. The biological clock is literally the New Year’s Eve countdown to motherhood, where you ring in a new chapter of your life. Today, “the clock” still ticks, but there are women delaying becoming mothers. For some, this is due to circumstances outside of their control, while others are making a conscious decision to wait until a little later in life to start a family.

of today, you could be putting your children’s future in financial jeopardy for many years to come.
As you take care of your family’s current needs,
make a commitment to also focus on building their
future wealth. Here are some of the crucial steps you need to take:
J A N UA R Y - M A R C H 2 0 1 3
PREPARE A BUDGET FUND Unplanned spending is one of the main reasons why people find it difficult to make ends meet
and create wealth. Make a detailed budget that outlines all your bills over the course of
a year, and put aside funds to cover irregular
expenses such as car insurance, property taxes and holiday shopping.
CREATE AN EMERGENCY FUND What if your car needed major repairs? What if you lost your job? Life is uncertain and it can present many ‘what if ’ situations. One
of your first wealth-building goals should be
to save enough money in an account to cover about three to six months’ living expenses in case of an unforeseen event.
BUILD AN EDUCATION FUND One of the best ways to help your children
to progress in life and build wealth is to
provide them with the best education that
money can buy. In addition to saving for their current school needs, open a long term account that will provide for their tertiary

children. Small savings amounts will grow
over time, once you start early and consistently make contributions. At Scotia Insurance, our Heritage International Savings Plan is
designed to help you to save over the long term for your child’s tertiary education.
For a long-term education fund, it is best
to get advice to ensure that you are saving
adequately to meet your objectives. A financial
advisor can help you to identify the right investment options and to review the growth of your fund over time.
DEVELOP AN OPPORTUNITY FUND It has been said that ‘cash is king,’ as having

ESTABLISH AN INSURANCE FUND One part of your wealth-building plan that should never be disregarded is
investing in insurance. Policies that provide coverage for critical illness and death benefits can help you to insure against the financial loss that can come from the unexpected illness or passing of the family’s breadwinner.
When you have considered all the various elements of building your family’s
wealth, you will be more purposeful in planning for their future. With clear
objectives and a practical action plan, you can be confident that you can successfully provide for all their financial needs. J A N UA R Y - M A R C H 2 0 1 3

We develop a bond with them long before our first meeting. For so many of us, the moment we discover we’re expecting, the dreams begin. Will it be a boy or girl? Who will he or she look like? And by the time they arrive 9 months later, we’re already madly in love. The proverbial ‘ten fingers and toes’ checked off, a plethora of praise sent heaven-ward, and armed with lots of wise words of ‘what to expect’, we now prepare for each stage of development. We’re sharing some tips as you embark on that great parental journey;raising your little angels. .

Playtime
There’s nothing sweeter than a happy baby.
And happy babies love to play! Hold off on
the toys for your newborn though, at least until
he or she is a few months old. Having a few objects
around for her to look at, touch and be intrigued
by is perfectly acceptable, but at this stage, baby is
completely enamored and perfectly satisfied with you! A mirror and your singing voice are more
than enough in the beginning. As your baby gets
older and more interactive, he’ll require greater
stimulation. Play dates are still a long way off,
since your under-two baby still thinks the world
is his/her oyster. For now, from about 11 months
he’ll be a pro at parallel play, (playing alongside,
but not engaging with another toddler), and will
graduate to interactive play date status between
24-36 months.

Peek-A-Boo, I See You!
Did you know that your newborn baby can’t decipher colour? This, like many
skills, develops gradually. Between 2 to 4
months, your baby will start to distinguish bright shades and complicated shapes and
patterns. The contrast of black and white is
dramatic and will definitely capture baby’s attention much earlier. Engage baby with
brightly coloured pictures, books and toys.

Eating
Your baby can begin eating solids between 4 – 6 months of
age. If exclusively breast-fed, you may want to wait until she’s
6 months old to start solids. Most pediatricians recommend starting with a basic cereal – rice being the most popular. Be
patient, and get ready for a bit of mess! Allow them to explore and discover, don’t be too worried about the little spills and inevitable splats which will come! Enjoy watching your little one enter this new phase and remember to be
gentle with any ‘hardware’ on their delicate gums.
When moving from purees to ‘chunks’, introduce new textures slowly, and keep it at one ingredient
for about 3-4 days before trying another to gauge their reaction. Remember that when your baby is
full, he’ll stop eating. Never force a baby to eat. .
*
Seating
Set a solid foundation for future
mealtimes. If your baby is able to sit up with his head held upright (between 4
and 6 months), let him have all his
meals while seated in a high chair.
He’ll make an early association with meals and his chair, and it will save
you in the long run from chasing baby
to convince him to eat! Consider
giving your baby a few “test drives” in the high chair to get him used to it before that first mealtime –
one less battle on the actual day of feeding number 1! Now is
also a good time to multi task by making a fun game out of
‘buckling up’. ‘Seat safety’ can start here and it will make
your seat belt battles in the
car so much easier.

Hand-Eye Coordination
During your baby’s first year of life, the combination of looking and touching, aka; hand-eye co-ordination, is a critical foundation
laid for future skills. Between one and three months of age, you’ll
notice those jerky newborn movements becoming smoother as your
little one gains more control. Be sure to give your baby toys that will
contribute to success in activities that require physical interaction. Encourage them to reach for special toys, and try out a baby gym
in the early months. By six months old you’ll really see their skills develop as they pass objects back and forth between
.
hands, and then to you! Get ready for the age old game
of baby dropping items for you to pick up, and all the repetition that it brings!

Chat ‘bout!
.
Mummies, don’t get upset… chances are, your baby will say Dada before he says Mama. Not
to worry though… it’s just because ‘D’ rolls off
the tongue waaaay easier than ‘M’ (wink wink).
Listen out for baby’s first words, which will come
along around 10 to 12 months of age. Talk to your baby
in order to stimulate his own vocabulary building. Your singing, reading and regular banter will captivate, entertain and educate baby.

Creep ‘n’ Crawl
Everyone loves a crawler, whether they’re
going forward or backward! There really is no
correct way to crawl. This stage is baby’s first step
(pun intended) on the road to independence, as he
learns to use his body to move around. Baby will start crawling between 6 to 9 months, and
then before you know it…you’ll be in
pursuit of your big walking baby! Get ready to run, and research child proofing for your home
well before your tot reaches
this stage.

Walk This Way
Your newborn will make her first attempts to
stand as early as 4 months and she’ll start
bouncing somewhere around the halfyear mark. Her first independent step
is still to come but expect her to start
‘cruising’ (holding on for supported
walking) as she nears one year. She
may stand without support, then begin
to walk. Some babies may start as early
as 7 or 8 months, but the norm is closer to
one year. If your baby is not walking by 18
months, you should consult your pediatrician.

Nap Time
Your newborn will sleep for about 16 to 18 hours a day. As your baby gets older, by
about 6 – 9 months, he will still be sleeping around 14 in every 24 hours, with daytime naps getting shorter. When your toddler
hits between 12 – 18 months, he should be averaging 11 – 11½ hours nighttime
sleep, and up to 2 ½ hours daytime napping.
Babies like and need structure. Every
parenting publication will tell you! So get
your sleep rhythm going early and you and your baby will 'sing' happily ever after.

Sitting Up
By the time baby is about nine months of age, he’ll be able to stay upright, sitting on the floor, for several
minutes. It’s interesting to note that at this stage, unless your baby falls, he can’t get himself down, but if he topples over, he will likely get himself back into a seated position. Start looking out
for him being able to hold himself seated
independently from about 5-6 months old.

His music speaks volumes, and his messages resonate long after the last notes have faded. The eldest son of Bob and Rita Marley, it wouldn't surprise you to hear we at b3 have been huge fans of David Nesta “Ziggy” Marley for (a collective) lifetime; who hasn’t been? To say we admire him even more now, and with a more personal respect as not only an artiste but as a father and a family man, would be an understatement. Married to his beautiful wife Orly for 8 years, and father to 6 children (ranging in age from 23 years to 23 months), he’s profound, humble and someone we don’t hesitate to call, quite simply, ‘wise’. He strikes us as one to take things in his stride. Imagine a smooth reggae beat as you read this. Reflect on some of his tunes (we could never fit all our favorites here!) while you dive a little deeper into the melody that is the life of the one and only, Ziggy Marley. Hold Him Joe Album_ Family Time Release_ May 5, 2009
What’s your earliest musical memory? Involving music...one of the earliest memories is my father doing a song called ‘Hold Him Joe’.
Your father is such an icon. Is it even possible to describe what it feels like to be the son of a legend? I can imagine pride, maybe a little pressure in the early days as an artiste - but to you was he just ‘Dad’? Yeah I mean Dad, and ‘Teacher’. The icon thing nuh happen until a lot after he passed away.
I mean, mi love mi father icon or not, yu know? So I mean .
the iconic thing really don't have nothing to do with how I feel bout my father.
Give us a little insight as to what he was like as a father? As a father? Discipline and respect, and manners, were important to him. School education, school was a must. He
just wanted our life better than his life - as parents you want your children’s life to be better than the life you had and that is what he wanted for us.
Your Mother is such a big activist and philanthropist herself. What was one of her biggest “no no’s” growing up? Always, if you don't listen you get a nice spanking or something. Mummy was always a strong woman, even as a child, I remember me running away from her with her chasing me around the outside of our yard...throwing shoes
at me! [laughs] She was tough and demanded respect from all of her children.

at night time. But mostly by just living life according to the idea of loving nature, loving other people, manners, respect and things like

The children's album, well it was just as Judah was about 2 years old, and I think I just wanted to speak to children directly and use
music as that vehicle. If my intention is to have some effect on people through music, the idea was that children are the most open minded
beings, they’re not yet conditioned. So if you want to use music as an influence, you haffi speak to children, so that’s the reason why we did that record yu know?
What’s your idea of family time? Well family time is just staying home, you know? We play football outside, run up and down, watch a movie. Doing anything, just being TOGETHER, that is my idea.

f you’ve just recently given birth and are ready to re-enter
the world, I’m sure you still want to do so stylishly. A
challenge is that you’re dressing a new body and you may also have a new lifestyle.
Dressing the new body does not mean you can’t be as
stylish as before, or even more so, and no one has to be able
to tell at first glance you’re “a beautiful new mom” rather than “a beautiful woman”. There are a few dress types and
looks I’d suggest trying to achieve that look.
The Tunic: The tunic hangs loose from the bust to the hem, sometimes
skimming the hips, but very importantly does not highlight the tummy
area at all. Unlike a muumuu it is not very wide and very unlikely to leave
people wondering if you’re pregnant instead of being a new mom. The tunic is especially stylish in your most flattering short length to show great legs
accented with lovely heels or a sandals. For this period, it can be a great wardrobe basic for casual days to even cocktail pieces.

[on opposite page] The look: A longsleeved mini option in a print for a daytime meeting. Gillian carries the Charlie Bag by Timi&Leslie, serving on this occasion for her hand bag.
The Wrap dress: One of the most flattering styles is a wrap dress, and it covers even more when made of a print fabric or in a knit, jersey or other fluid fabric (but not too light in weight). The wrap does a good job of concealing any tummy bulge. And the typically flattering neckline allows you to accessorise and bring eyes towards your face and not the body – if you so desire. The look: A long knit wrap dress with detail at the neckline keeps focus higher, but the wrap does well to conceal as well. Draping: Soft draping, especially if done diagonally from the shoulder is perfect for concealing. The look: (Tangerine dress) The added drape detail of this dress falls over the front of the body completely, so while otherwise form-fitting so you still feel beautiful, you do without being conscious of any flaws. (Yellow dress) Draping at the shoulder and neckline bring the eyes to these details, although they do add some flow over an otherwise form-fitting dress. A bold necklace further brings attention to the face.
Structured items: A garment made of a firm medium – heavy weight may be constructed with some structure and is great for creating and holding curves. The Look: a structured skirt works well for a great evening out.

WHAT MOMENTS YOU THINK FAMILIES SHOULD GO FOR TO BUILD A GREAT MEMORY BANK OF IMAGES? I’m not a parent myself, but I have God children, my friends have kids, and I talk to
them and say “guys, just take pictures every
day!”. Looking back at my own childhood I barely have any pictures growing up - so it’s
important for me to make sure other people do.
For me it’s not about specific moments - it's
about creating a ‘memory bank’. Capture a

a child because those images become infinitely
more important when they themselves are adults with children of their own.

we always had ripe bananas to snack on. I recall my mom making this treat for us when the
bananas were going a bit too ripe -but back then there was no confectionery sugar topping!”
J A N UA R Y - M A R C H 2 0 1 3
YOU’LL NEED . . . 3 ripe bananas 1 egg 1/2 cup of sugar 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract 1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon 2 cups of all-purpose flour 1 tablespoon of baking powder 3 cups of vegetable oil for frying confectioner sugar (optional, but nice finishing touch)
DIRECTIONS
1.
In a fairly large bowl, peel and cut the bananas into chunks. Mash to a smooth consistency, using a fork or potato masher. It will have the consistency of baby food . . . parents will know what I mean.
2.
In a separate bowl whip the egg, then add sugar, vanilla and cinnamon. Whip again until the sugar breaks down. Now add that to the bowl of mashed bananas. You can certainly use an electric mixer if you wish, but I much prefer a wire whisk (burn some calories before replacing them with tasty ones).
3.
The f inal step in preparing the batter is to slowly start adding in the flour and baking powder. Mix until you have a smooth batter, without any lumps.
4.
Heat the oil on a medium/high flame and add spoonfuls (tablespoons) of batter to it. It will take about 1 minute to get golden brown. Flip and cook for another minute until the other side is golden brown. They will float when they’re cooked.
5. 6.
Remove and drain on paper towels.
Final step before eating is to dust with the confectionery sugar. Serve warm. Good with vanilla ice cream on the side.

ISLAND STYLE CHICKEN STRIPS
“Following on the technique we’d use for making fried chicken when I was a kid on the islands (still remember pounding the crackers in a tea towel to make the crumbs), these could easily be the best chicken strips you’ll ever have”. -Chris De La Rosa .
YOU’LL NEED . . . salted crackers (about 1.5 cups crumbs)
2 eggs 1/4 teaspoon sea salt 1/4 teaspoon black pepper 2-3 cups oil for frying (vegetable oil) 3/4 cup all purpose flour * sea salt (optional)
2 scallions
1 tablespoon thyme
1 tablespoon parsley
2 chicken breast (split) about 1 lb
DIRECTIONS
1.
5.
2.
6.
Place the crackers in a zip lock bag or in a tea towel and then using a rolling pin or wine bottle, crush until you have the consistency of bread crumbs. I like texture, so I try to leave some of it a bit chunky. Set aside in a bowl. Chop the scallions, thyme and parsley finely. Then add it to the bowl with the cracker crumbs and give it a good stir. (I know this step is a bit strange to my Caribbean readers as we’re seasoning the bread crumbs and not the chicken as we would traditionally do.)
3.
Cut the chicken into 1/4 inch strips (don’t fuss with being even), wash, drain and set aside. Crack both eggs into another bowl and toss in the black pepper and salt then give it a whisk.
4.
We now have the chicken cut into pieces, the seasoned crumbs and eggs. It’s time to set up a batter and frying station. We’ll need the vegetable oil in a deep pan (I used a small wok so the oil doesn’t splatter onto the stove while frying) on med/high heat. Plates with the flour, the seasoned crumbs, the chicken strips, egg wash and a paper towel-lined plate (or basket) to drain the excess oil when the chicken strips are done.
Take a piece of chicken and dust it in the flour, then into the eggs and drain off the excess egg . Next roll in the seasoned bread crumbs. Do about 4-5 of these chicken pieces so once you start adding to the hot oil, you’ll have a few to go in at the same time. Your oil should be hot by now, so gently place each strip in. Flip after a couple minutes and keep an eye on them. If you find that they’re browning too fast, turn your heat down a bit. It takes about 5-7 minutes to fully cook and have that lovely golden brown colour. Drain on the paper towels and continue until all the chicken strips are cooked. Sprinkle (while hot) with a little sea salt if you wish.
7.
These chicken strips will look stunning when they come out of the fryer, with the golden colour and specs of green herbs. And honestly . . . they will be absolutely delicious. With a wonderful crunch from the seasoned cracker crumbs (airy as if you used Panko crumbs), tender and very moist (fully cooked) on the inside. You’ll be a superhero to your kids after you serve up a batch of these. But be warned, they won’t want you to go back to the stuff you used to get them at those fast food spots!

0-year-old Kemar Thompson a.k.a. Jr. Pinchers, has been on the music scene
since he began performing at age 7 at school functions and talent shows. Yes, you made the correct connection, his Dad is the one and only reggae great, Pinchers. Married for 2 and a half years to Christy, and father to 2 year old Aydon, the
family may reside in Miami but Kemar is absolutely resolute in calling Jamaica ‘Home
Base’! Jr. Pinchers was warm and friendly, the conversation flowed well beyond our brief
interview which was interspersed with a lot of laughs and talk of his island home. He asked us to: “make sure that everybody know, Jr.P love every nation!” We caught up with him on a quick break from his busy schedule building his own legacy in the industry and setting the stage for his 2 year old son. 94 | BUMP • BABY & BEYOND b3 |

me on finding out how things are going and how he can help. It’s his first Grandson so he’s happy being very much involved!
What has been his best advice since you became a Dad yourself? Put your family first. He told me that in this world, in the entertainment
world especially, you can carried away in a lot of things and neglect your family. You know what I mean? That’s where your roots are so you have to keep that close and put your roots first. So that’s what
I’m doing. And that I’ll always be successful, always be a focused person, if I do that.
Artists do tend to get a bad rap when it comes to family - you’re a married man, with a beautiful son. How do you prioritize and put family first like your dad advises? Take the time out to be there for them, you know what I mean? It’s very hectic being an entertainer but there are times when you just
have to lay your business aside and put in the family work. Because
without a family, there’s no you really. That’s how I look at it. Coming up I never thought I’d be at the age I am, married and having a child. Now that it’s happened, it’s life changing. Everybody thinks that being an artist and having a family life takes away from you being a good
artist. I realise that’s a lie. It gives you the opportunity to realise the
family life and being an artist or anybody who aims towards success.
A lot of things, you know what I mean. We try to keep home Jamaican
oriented, and we do have a lot of family where we are in Miami so he’s taken around them a lot. We talk to him about Jamaica to let him
know where he’s coming from. I’m planning too to take him home to Jamaica to get him hands on with his Caribbean culture before he turns 3 so we’ll be going soon with him.
What is special father/son time for you and Aydon? Basically my thing with him is going to the park, running around and daily chores. It’s a warm feeling. It’s good to know I can be the
kind of father to take the time out to instill in him what I feel are
real values. I have an obligation to take him to Jamaica soon-he hasn’t been yet! His grandparents are dying to have that time with him and show him around...

Dear Doc. I had the most gorgeous hair while pregnant. Thick, glossy. Really healthy looking. My baby is now 2 months old and my hair is shedding faster than the baby weight. It's dry, brittle, breaking, and I swear I'm developing bald patches. Please tell me what's going on, and what I can do to stop this!
.
What you are experiencing is not unusual after giving birth and there is no need to panic.
Unfortunately this process of the post partum period cannot be stopped but like most
changes during pregnancy, it is only temporary. Everyone’s hair has what is called a hair cycle.
Approximately 90% of our hair is growing at any one time, while the other 10% enters a resting
phase. Every two to three months the resting hair falls out and allows new hair to grow in its place. During
pregnancy as a result of the increased levels of the hormone oestrogen, the hair cycle remains in the growing
phase stimulating hair growth giving the appearance of a full luxurious head of hair. After delivery, oestrogen returns to normal levels allowing the hair that remained in the growth phase to fall out and return to the normal
cycle. Some experience this in stages while others experience it all at once resulting in bald patches. The most
common period of hair loss occurs approximately 2-3 months after delivery and resolves within 15 months. A
few tips to help you during this time include: A diet high in fruits and vegetables, which contain flavonoids and
antioxidants that may provide protection for the hair follicles and encourage hair growth, continue your antenatal supplements/ vitamins that contain vitamin B complex, A and E, Use shampoos and conditioners that contain biotin and silica and Avoid
hair styles that cause tension to the hair roots.
Dear Doctor Thea: I have an awkward question. My 20 month old son has begun to masturbate, and I don't know how to deal with this. My Mother-In-Law says to slap him, and stop him. Is it normal? What do I do? Firstly, please do not use such a harsh means of punishment for this act. Masturbation is a common childhood habit that both girls and boys engage in. It is a behaviour used to explore his or hers external genitalia and is perfectly normal and a
part of the developmental process. If you “slap” him what you are doing is labelling this act as bad, or dirty. This will create
a sense of guilt and secrecy that can have major effects on his self-esteem and may be unhealthy for his sexual development.
Therefore this is one advice that you can comfortably ignore from your Mother-In-Law.
With that aside you need to set limits. Begin by explaining to your child that it is a private activity, much like toileting,
and should be limited to the bedroom or bathroom. Try distracting your child by getting him interested in another activity with his hands. Increase the amount of parental affection as children usually perform this act for comfort.
If masturbation becomes compulsive and interferes with his normal activities or if he cannot be distracted easily from this
activity then it may indicate a more serious psychological or personal problem and consultation with a pediatrician is necessary. 100 | BUMP • BABY & BEYOND b3 |

diaries
Exposed to mosquitoes??? Invest in a mosquito racket! Quick, inexpensive and highly effective!!! Warning: Be sure to keep out of the reach of children! Check your mosquito net periodically to ensure that it is free of tears.

Dear Doc: With the recent dengue scare in my community, I can't help but worry about my 3 children. Is there anything I can do in addition to mosquito nets and screening to keep them safe? How will I know if they DO get dengue? What are the first symptoms to look for?

AUGUST 22, 2012 Dear Jude, there are things in this life that
.
will scare you senseless; they may scare you
so much that you turn away from them, turn against them, insist you despise them. In
some cases, you may turn out to be quite
right to hate them. But all I ask is that at the moment you face the fear at its height, when it’s asking you to choose your response, stop
and think for a minute. Is it fear of the thing, or fear of failing at the thing that
scares you most? Never let garden variety
fear block you from what might become your dearest achievement. You are greater than that.
OCTOBER 22, 2012 Dengue fever is one of the most common mosquito-borne diseases. The
Aedes aegypti mosquito transmits the dengue virus therefore, control of breeding sites is essential in reducing the risk of becoming infected. These
mosquitoes like warm, humid weather and breeds where there is stagnant water.
Therefore ensure that after the rain places where water has collected without any drainage is emptied e.g. flower pots and old tires. In addition to the use of
mosquito nets and screens you can prevent mosquito bites by wearing clothing
that fully covers the skin and the application of insect repellent when outdoors.
Symptoms generally appear 3—14 days after the infective bite. Dengue in infants and toddlers usually starts with the symptoms of a viral illness which
includes high fever, runny nose, cough and a mild skin rash may be present.
In older children symptom may include, a high fever, pain behind the eyes and
in the joints, backaches and headaches. Please consult with your pediatrician if your child experiences any of the above symptoms.

NIGHT WAKING by Elena Diedrick-Lynch

Interrupted sleep can be the hardest part of parenting to get accustomed to. It’s the one tidbit experienced parents love to enlighten expectant parents with! When I was pregnant it was one of the biggest hurdles with which I had to come to terms. Someone actually said to me “Hah, you’ll never sleep again!” instead of "Congratulations!" .

parenting bible, gives great detail on the “Wake to Sleep” method.
Basically, you would go into your child’s nursery one hour before the
scheduled wake up and gently jostle the child out of their existing sleep cycle forcing them to start a new one. This causes your to child sleep through their scheduled wake up. The method hinges on a couple
newborns wake because they simply don’t have the fat stores on their
elements; it must be done one hour prior to the habitual wake up and
night. During baby-hood, many babies become accustomed to waking

it MUST happen for 3 nights in a row. I suggest parents take turns if

to be bright-eyed and bushy-tailed a few hours later when your newborn
starts his or her day all over again.
Many factors contribute to night time wakings including developmental
leaps, growth spurts and teething. They’re actually an expected side effect
of all of those periods of baby’s life and they’ll disrupt their sleep cycles – so expect it! Each of those periods should disappear within a week; if they
seem to stay put after that period, again, you might have a habitual waker
on your hands.
Another reason babies might wake at night is when they haven’t had an
opportunity to fully exert their energy during the day - they’re under tired.
Most commonly they’ll wake up shortly after they’ve been put to bed (usually about 45 minutes into bedtime) upset and unwilling to go back down. For this grumpy infant, The Baby Whisperer suggests a method called Pick
Up/ Put Down. Walk in to your child’s room – you’ll most likely find her
standing hanging on to the crib for dear life and begging to be picked up.
You’re to reassure her without any conversation that you’re there for her and
as soon as she’s calm, lay her back down in her crib with her blanket, lovie,
etc and walk out. I like to rest my hand on my baby’s back for just a moment
.
do not fall into the trap of
“I’ll just pick him up this once and that’s it…” it won’t end there to ensure they’re calm and give them further reassurance before I walk out
quietly. You may need to repeat this, but each time is an opportunity to teach your child to calm herself and sleep independently.
When a child hasn’t been taught to be an independent sleeper he is
likely to wake up in a crib and not where he fell asleep, i.e. Mummy’s
arms. Remember, do not fall into the trap of “I’ll just pick him up this
once and that’s it…” it won’t end there and ultimately you’re teaching him
inconsistency by resorting to different tactics. Stick to one method and
don’t deviate. Ensure everyone who deals with baby supports your method or you’ll have an outright revolt on your hands the next time wake-up falls in your lap.
During toddlerhood you might find your little one waking up with
Night Terrors. A Night Terror will start with a high-pitched scream, your child seems to wake up in complete distress and cries inconsolably. From
a physiological perspective it’s similar to sleep walking. Instead of making the transition from a deep sleep to a REM sleep your child got caught
somewhere in between. Your little one might not recognize you or react to
anything you’re saying. So what should you do if it happens? Keep them
from hurting themselves, just be reassuring and hold them if they’ll let you.
How do you avoid this? Try to ensure their routine is consistent and avoid
getting them overtired. If it persists for an extended period consult your pediatrician or a sleep specialist.
Regardless of your sleep issue, rest assured you’re not alone in your
situation and just remember to be consistent with your routine. J A N UA R Y - M A R C H 2 0 1 3
