O
ur children are growing up in a heavily goal-oriented world. Each stage of development presents new objectives for them - be it taking that first step, conquering GSAT examinations or learning to drive. We keep telling them to ‘keep going’ and ‘never give up’ because we know that quitters don’t win. Along the way, we encourage them to set goals of their own- little life goals that shape and mold them. As the first loves in their lives, we celebrate with and for them each time they accomplish whatever goal is set before them. And so it should be. But what about us? As parents, we often lose sight of ourselves when we are consumed with caring and providing for our children. They take centre stage, while we work assiduously behind the scenes and while that’s great, we have to remember that whether we like it or not, they are watching and they will model our behavior. What are your goals for you? Where are you on your ‘happy scale’? Just over a year ago, I set a lifestyle goal for myself that included among many things, being more present with my children (– they’re growing up so very fast), sharing my passion for parenting on a wider scale, (– because I truly believe that that is the nucleus of a strong nation), and taking better care of me – because a fit mom is a fab mom! It’s been a hell of a journey, filled with an equal balance of trials and triumphs. I was recently confronted by a fear I didn’t realize I had and simultaneously challenged by my 8-year-old, when I froze in fear at the top of a waterfall. Children of all ages were jumping into the water below- freely and fearlessly, while I, on the other hand was paralyzed with anxiety. I eventually jumped - after much deliberation, but not before the entire park gathered to see the grown lady who was afraid to jump. I carefully considered the shame of turning around and walking back down to the bottom, but it was eventually my daughter who reminded me to be BOLD. “Just do it Mommy”, she yelled as I took the huge leap of faith that I always encourage my own children to take. I did, and the pride that engulfed my children reinforced to me just how important it is that our actions authenticate our words. As we head into a new year, with new resolutions and for some of us, old and unfulfilled goals, I remind myself and all of our valued readers to dig deeper, challenge ourselves even harder and live BOLDer. Cheers to a new year of parenting success!

Yes you are growing a human being in your body!
This has to be the most exciting and exhilarating news for you ever and quite possibly the scariest. No need to fret, women have been having babies for many, many, many years before you. Here are a few tips that should make your pregnancy easier.
REMEMBER TO EAT.
And eat healthy and often. Yes you may be tempted to indulge in all manners of sweetness, cakes, donuts and hamburgers but you really need to maintain a balanced diet. Eating healthy means that you are giving your body the nutrients and energy necessary to grow your baby.

EXERCISE.
Just because you are pregnant doesn’t mean that you should stop exercising. Exercising is good for stress relief and maintaining your general health and it also has been said that it could make your delivery more bearable. There is no reason why you cannot continue your normal exercise routine as long as the activity is not considered high risk. Walk, jog, yoga or swim or all of the above as you please.
BE HYDRATED.
Drink lots of fluids at least eight to 10 glasses a day. Think water, green juice, milk, natural fruit juices. Stay away from caffeine as this can be dehydrating (one cup of tea or coffee a day can be snuck in if you MUST have it) .
KEEP FAMILY AND FRIENDS CLOSE.
Surround yourself with loving and supportive friends and family to offset any stressors you may have in your life. Laugh as often as you can. Because a happy Mommy makes for a happy baby. Call a funny friend or watch your favourite sitcom.
SLEEP!
You are going to be tired so take naps when needed. Although maybe not at your work desk unless it is lunchtime with your boss permission. Try to get at least eight hours at night.
BE POSITIVE.
Pray for a good pregnancy and a good safe delivery. Meditate. Keep a journal of your pregnancy, what ever you need to do to stay positive because if you believe your pregnancy and delivery will be smooth sailing then you are one step closer to making it happen.
Happy Landing! Always seek the direct advice of your own doctor in connection with any questions or issues you may have regarding your own health or the health of others.

Pregnancy Anxiety by Gayle Cunningham
T
he anxiety a pregnant woman experiences in early pregnancy can be very stressful. This is especially true for those who understand the reality of miscarriages and who have read the statistics that say 1 in 4 pregnancies end in a miscarriage. I love track and field and when the big meets are up and Jamaicans are in competition I’m always on my feet. Since pregnancy my husband has relegated me to the section of the living room with the chairs and asked me to have my derriere occupy one make of them as I cheer on the athletes. But there are some events that have me anxious while watching the athletes and cause my heart rate to increase significantly. These are the relays. These make me especially worried because just a minor error can cost everything. .

WINTER 2016
That is the anxiety I felt in my early weeks of pregnancy each time I used the bathroom. I trust this will not be gross for anyone reading. But one thing you never want to see is any shade of red when you wipe your female parts after using the toilet. I was forever anxious. It is like I am in a game of baseball/softball and my team is about to bring home the victory and they need this home run. Everything is riding on the outcome. That is my mindset when I’m about to check that tissue; the adrenaline is pumping; I visualise the fans holding their breath in the stands. Then upon examining the tissue and seeing that it is clear it is as if I hear the words “safe” and know I have hit a home run. There is also the anxiety in wondering whether the pains you feel are normal. You feel cramps in your lower abdomen, back aches and headaches. These are sometimes very light, while at other times they can be somewhat painful. They have the ability to make you want to visit the doctor on a daily basis. Thank God for my sister who was a few months ahead of me in her pregnancy. Each time my anxiety levels sky rocketed, she found a way to reassure me that all would be well. My OBGYN was quite calming and reassuring as well. The long and short is you hear about morning sickness; tiredness; cramps/ stretching pains; food aversions; increased urination, etc. But no one warns you about pregnancy anxiety. I was not warned either. For some reason no one .
remembered to tell me about that pesky pregnancy symptom called anxiety. So when I started to experience it I thought I was paranoid until I compared notes with my expectant sister and an expectant friend. There and then I realised I was normal. So for all pregnant mommies who will read this I submit to you that there is a symptom to look out for called anxiety. It is quite normal but it does not have to consume you. Here are a few tips in managing anxiety in pregnancy: 1. Keep faith in God; thank Him for the privilege of conception. 2. Set aside time to bond with your baby on a daily basis. 3. Write down your questions and ask them each time you visit your clinic or healthcare provider. No question is stupid; if it concerns you, ask it. 4. Compare notes with friends and family members who have walked the path before you. They will give you useful advice and words of comfort that will help you on your journey. 5. Make use of information on the web. There are various pregnancy apps that can be downloaded free of cost and these also provide you with online access to forums where real mommies discuss some of the issues you might be going through. A happy and healthy pregnancy is my wish for all pregnant mothers.

hoosing where to vacation is such an important decision for me, simply because I actually want to enjoy my vacation. Occasionally, that may involve sporadic breaks from my adorable, alwayswell-behaved, loving children (insert sarcasm here) – and no, this does not make me a bad parent! However, it does make me a realistic parent, who would rather not return home completely exhausted after a few days of sun, sand and sea. So I choose wisely. I have a priority list that must be filled and while it’s in no particular order, all the points are non-negotiable. .
HERE ARE MY TOP 5 CONSIDERATIONS NECESSARY FOR ME TO REALLY ENJOY A VACATION – A TRUE ESCAPE!! ENTERTAINMENT Once my children are a part of my getaway, then this is always first on my list. First off, Moon Palace struck all the right notes with their wave-making FlowRider surf machine which, once you get the hang of it, it’s just as captivating for grown ups as it is for the young ones. Actually, I may have surfed more than my children did! It’s a wave simulator that let’s you practice your balancing act while channeling your inner ‘surfer dude’. Add this to the host of other activities on offer – between the waterslide, kids’ waterpark area and the Playroom, ‘Mom, I’m bored’ were words that I would not too soon hear! I hoped. The hotel’s water sports activities include paddle boarding, windsurfing, sailing, kayaking, scuba diving and snorkeling. And if you’ve never experienced swimming with a dolphin, you have the chance to do just that right here in your temporary backyard. Older children have the grown-up styled lounge Wired which is ideal for teens who are past the little kid stage where they would enjoy The Playroom, but they’re not adult enough to visit Noir. It’s a great space

for them to chill out, catch up on the latest social media happenings, make new friends, or just to enjoy their own teenaged company. Taking traditional hotel-styled entertainment to the next level, Moon Palace Jamaica Grande goes above and beyond playmakers encouraging play! This past year alone, Moon Palace Jamaica Grande hosted international performers OMI, MAGIC and Jamaica’s own Shaggy! I honestly can’t wait to see who’ll be on stage for 2017.
ME TIME After taking a few steps inside of Awe-Spa, I completely get why they’ve called it that. It’s simply awesome. At 35,000 square feet, Awe Spa® is the largest spa in Jamaica, fully prepared to have you immerse yourself in ultimate luxury. If you’re not necessarily a ‘spa person’, but want to enjoy the exhilaration of relaxing and unwinding – you have the option of not even leaving your room. CULINARY NIRVANA At home, I often get bored in my kitchen. When I’m on vacation, eating tasty, creative meals is the last thing I’d want to have to worry about. Satisfying my palate was more than a breeze at Moon Palace Jamaica Grande. The property has four restaurants and six bars and lounges. While I am slightly biased toward the crepes and ice cream at the 24-hour Boulangerie, I tried to muster some self-control and not consume every morsel on offer. MoMo, the gourmet Asian restaurant was as authentic as it gets, even offering us the chance to hit the loud gong on our way out. The children enjoyed their ‘Bruce Lee’ moment and I enjoyed watching their genuine happiness unfold. I fell in love with the traditional Italian menu offered at Gondola. The ambiance there transported me to a Michelin eatery somewhere in the south of Naples, making me forget that I was at an all-inclusive resort. Moon Palace’s website

suggests that the hotel’s epicurean offerings present ‘culinary nirvana’… paired with the wine and spirits on offer, I concur.
R&R “Live the Palace Life,” they said. Well, I sure did. And the children certainly did so too. They were impressed with their own mini bathrobes – it took much persuasion to convince my daughter that she could not go to dinner dressed in her robe! All the amenities hail from the CHI product line – the same professional hair care products used by hairstylists and salons around the world. In my room, all calls to the U.S. and Canada were unlimited – nice touch. And complimentary ‘wifi’ everywhere on property meant I didn’t have to sit in the obligatory common areas to be connected. Loved that, although I really did make several valiant attempts to be gadget and phone-free.

AESTHETIC APPEAL With just about any place I stay at, what meets my eyes first, affects what happens second, third and so on… You get my drift, right? First impressions last. And Moon Palace set out to ensure that their property and the experience within would be etched indelibly in the minds of everyone who steps through their grand entrance. The palatial experience that welcome you in the lobby continues throughout the property, intensifying in some areas more than others, but always reminding its guests that royal treatment is standard and opulence is to be expected. Family vacation complete? Yes Children happy? Yes. Sad to leave, actually. Memories made? Yes, for sure, and the pics to prove it! Dining delights? Tummies filled to overflowing. Rested? Yes, Finally! Soon come back? Yes, indeed! www.palaceresorts.com/moonpalacejamaicagrande

DHA and Its Impact on Neurodevelopment In the First Years of Life By Dr. Claudia Hurtado Ochoterena
.
M
illions of years ago, human beings were transformed through the process of evolution of brain growth called “encephalization,” which occurred from the time of the primitive hominids until today’s homosapiens .12 Over the course of approximately 2 to 3 million years, there has been a growth in brain volume which has allowed us to acquire new cognitive abilities for communicating, moving, and adapting to our environment.12 There are different theories and current evidence that DHA (docosahexaenoic acid or Omega 3) played a fundamental role in the evolution of the human brain. It is believed that during evolution, our ancestors incorporated food from the
sea, such as algae and fish, into their diet, foods that are rich in DHA, which little by little formed a structural and functional part of the human brain and helped it to acquire abilities different from those of other species.13 Currently, we know that the human brain grows in a very complex way, and there are many factors that can affect its development, such as nutrition and stimulation. The crucial period for brain growth and development to occur is during the first five years of life, which is when our brain grows most.3,6,10 Some fats are produced by our system, but there are others what we cannot synthesize, and we must consume them in our diet, such as long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, this is why they are called essential fatty acids. One of the most important is DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), also called Omega 3. DHA is found in high concentrations in the nervous system. The involvement of Omega 3 fatty acids (DHA or docosahexaenoic acid) in human development begins during pregnancy. A large quantity of DHA goes to the fetus for the formation of the brain, mainly from the third trimester of the pregnancy, and continues for the first five years of life.2,7,9,10,12 It is said that DHA is a neuro-nutrient, since it is deposited mainly in areas of the brain that are very important for vision, attention, and learning, which contributes to nerve signals being more efficient. Different studies have shown that the consumption of DHA in a child’s diet is essential for development, since it contributes to cognitive and visual development in children.1,2,4,5,8,9,10,12 As such, proper nutrition and stimulation are essential factors for development in childhood.6

A Model in the Making .
by Michelle Gordon • Photography: Dwayne Watkins • Styling: Norma Williams • Make-up: Tiffany Lawson
Professional modeling is a pursuit that demands (among other things,) the critical prerequisites of a determined personality, a unique look and aesthetic appeal aka the
‘it’ factor. It’s a career that has long fascinated audiences, and remains the driving force behind the world of beauty and fashion and everything in between. Brianna Campbell has the makings of a supermodel. Her presence, at age twelve is something of an enigma. She channels a classic combination of the runway greats in one; Naomi’s walk, Linda’s pout and Cindy’s fierce stare. While simultaneously evaluating her pre-teen dreams as they slowly unfold in front of her, Brianna’s life is telling a story not unlike the dreams that many little girls have.

rianna was ‘discovered’ at a model casting call for the recently held Island Child Style Runway show where she also caught the attention of international model Cynthia Bailey, owner of The Bailey Agency school of Fashion in Atlanta, Georgia. She is magnetic to say the least, and screams a silent whisper of supermodel stardom. She’s lanky and ‘tall for her age’ – a common statement among Jamaicans who are easily inclined to comparing and contrasting status quos. But Brianna defies your average expectation. With most first-timers, you expect nervousness, anxiety and shyness. But this young lady is none of the above. She is quiet, yet confident and almost magically transforms into a seasoned professional on demand. As a child model, Brianna is not on this journey alone. She is guided by her mother, herself a former model who understands fully the challenges and conquests of the industry. “Having seen Brianna’s interest grow into a passion, and being well aware of her potential, I know that my role is to support her,” explains Nicole McDonald, Brianna’s mother. “But it’s a tricky decision for any parent. Knowing your child is the most important part of this process, because that helps to determine when its ok,” she continues. Nicole refers to making the decision to allow her daughter to actually make the first step towards a career in modeling. For many little girls, participating in playful school events is the fun and easy part that sets a great foundation for public interaction. But when your child is serious about wanting to make a career out of modeling, as the parent of that young child, it takes thought and research and thought again. With due diligence done and regular consultation through prayer, Nicole is confident that she has made the right decision. And Brianna couldn’t be happier. Meet Brianna Campbell. Beautiful, brave and BOLD. .

Play, Stay, Bond Together The power of family traditions and making memories. .
By: Tamiann Young (Young Mummy Diaries)
As we journey through life as parents we realize that a lot of our own shaping comes from the memories we have held dear to us, the ones that were made when we were just children, the kind of memories that fuel us on our own journey as parents for that matter ---or in some cases the lack of said memories.

he truth is if we are real to ourselves we can easily identify things in us that our parents have either done for us or things they have instilled or insisted we embraced coming out in the way we parent of our own
little ones. As a mother of three, Malikie 13, Tsehai 10 and Shiloh-Sarai 7, this story of ‘being the best parent possible’ is a topic that runs through my head almost every day, really no fault of mine but because I was blessed to have benefitted from an extended family environment where I was introduced to so many things like, going to the National Pantomime, going hiking and staying at Whitfield hall (shameless plug) eating lychee, picking rose apples and coffee beans- I can still remember what it was like to realize how sweet coffee beans are ahead of the roasting ahhhhh!!! As I maneuver through the ‘balancing act’ of motherhood, I am reminded of the importance of creating unique family traditions, it’s these traditions that become the core of the memories that when we are absent from our loved ones we hold dear to us. It was just last week a friend of mine told me about her memories as a child, when her mother would call them all together just to do random projects. Even though she was a single mother with limited disposable income, all she recalls were the fun times they had together as a family. A co-worker who has two older children in high school, was actually encouraging me to begin some form of family Christmas tradition. She told me about the Christmas where they came together and chose a theme - it was ‘Divas and Dons’ they made top hats and glittery shoes for the tree-For her it’s never ‘just ‘ a tree- It’s their tree and it means so much more to that little family each year as they choose a theme. So now that we’ve just got over the hump of the back to school and we are fast approaching, two highly anticipated times of year almost cleverly left towards the end of the calendar year. Let us look forward to this Thanksgiving with a purpose, to truly be grateful for all that we have. Let us not get caught in how much we are going to spend in dollars but see that it is the time we spend together, making memories, making traditions that truly propel our lives. This Thanksgiving and Christmas let’s encourage our little ones to understand that for Christmas it’s not only about getting but also its about sharing and giving. Introduce a family tradition this Christmas if you have not yet done so. I know I sure will!! And let’s all ring in 2017 with purpose. .

he incredibly talented Afro-Feminist Author and Speaker Chimamnda Ngozi Adichie once said “I am a bit of a fundamentalist when it comes to black women’s hair. Hair is hair – yet [it is] also about larger questions of: self-acceptance, insecurity and what the world tells you, is beautiful. For many black women, the idea of wearing their hair naturally is unbearable” and it resonated with me. I was the black woman she was talking about. I was the person who cringed at the thought of wearing my short, black, kinky hair naturally. In 2015 a little girl named Riley-Ann, who lives in the United Kingdom struggled with the same issues I had with my hair. As her Mother (Selma Nicholls) tells it, Riley had her own struggles with identifying her hair and skin as beautiful. At only 3 years old, Riley would come home from nursery expressing that she wanted straight, long hair like her teachers, friends and persons on the television. Though Selma attempted to use verbal affirmation to tell Riley-Ann that her curly afro was beautiful, it did not work. In August 2015 she came home one day saying she wanted her skin to be white and that she didn’t want to be brown anymore.
Selma says she then decided to put on the latest Annie film featuring Jamie Foxx and the young black actress Quvenzhané Wallis, who played Annie, in an attempt at showing Riley that there was someone who looked like her. Almost immediately the movie did what Selma had hoped. It gave her daughter a face of someone she could relate to, who was a superstar in the media, who looked like her. One year later, inspired by her daughter’s story, Selma Nicholls founded the Looks Like Me Modeling/ Talent Agency in September 2016. The agency is located in Tottenham, North London and is committed to redefining how beauty is represented in the UK media. The Agency features a diverse range of black, mixed race and ethnic children between the ages 10 months and 10 years old. Looks Like Me was created out of Selma’s vision to diversify how beauty is seen by increasing the visibility of underrepresented children in the advertising and creative sectors, Looks Like Me Modeling/Talent Agency promotes and encourages the development of confidence in children.
.
“I, LIKE MANY MOTHERS BELIEVE IT’S IMPORTANT FOR ALL CHILDREN IN THE UK TO BE FAIRLY REPRESENTED WITHIN ALL FORMS OF MEDIA. WE OWE THIS TO OUR CHILDREN, SO THAT THEY NOT ONLY FEEL LIKE A PART OF OUR SOCIETY BUT ALSO SO THEY FEEL COMFORTABLE WITH THE SKIN THEY WERE BORN WITH.” – SELMA NICHOLLS

SPRY KIDS
by Michelle Gordon and Ayesha Barnett
Raising healthy, well-rounded children is the ultimate accomplishment for most parents. Ensuring that you have done your part in creating a solid foundation for the next generation of leaders is important.
I .
f we’re honest, the best parts of our childhood for many of us here in the Caribbean was outdoor time with ring games like Hide and Seek, Stuck-InThe-Mud, One-Two-Three Red Light and a plethora of other games we played. Eating ice cream, cakes and candy were often the order of the day, yet somehow gaining weight and unhealthy habits were rarely an issue. Throughout most Caribbean schools, Physical Education or P.E. as it is more commonly called, was an important part of our curriculum. Back in the day, when today’s parents were yesterday’s young children, we were able to maintain healthy lifestyles and in particular, stable weight profiles because we enjoyed significantly higher levels of activity. While many children are involved with various sporting activities, an equally significant number are not. Today, for more reasons than one, too many children just aren’t as naturally motivated to be as active as they ought to be. Often distracted by gizmos and gadgets, hectic parental work schedules, longer hours at school or the general inclination to be lethargic, fewer children are outside being active. Unfortunately, while ignoring unhealthy habits is the last thing a parent will intentionally do, it can and does happen as a result of ‘life’ getting in the way. It’s always quite easy to say “Eat your veggies, Ella.” or “Grab an apple, Joshua,” but being serious about developing healthy habits in children, goes a lot further. Enter Spry Training – a strength and conditioning facility that offers customized training programmes for clients to achieve their personal goals. “At the epicenter of our philosophy is hard work. We believe that maximum effort, good guidance and council can help anyone achieve their highest goals and targets,”

explains Jae Edwards, the driving force behind the Spry. For Jae, exposing children at an early stage to the how the body works and the conditioning it requires for peak performance, can only be beneficial in the long rung. Spry Kids is a recent addition to the line of services offered at the Kingston facility. Paired with lessons on nutrition and body mechanics, the children participate in age appropriate activities that encourage them to challenge themselves beyond traditional exercises. And most importantly, each exercise is presented with how and why it works, so the children understand exactly what they’re doing, and why they’re doing it. According to Jae, “…once they grasp the fundamentals of a healthy lifestyle, that stays with them forever.” All trainers at Spry Fitness Jamaica, are guided by the belief that there is more than one way to achieve any goal and those who interact with the children also understand that the key to healthy living begins and ends with encouraging and developing a passion for fitness – and at Spry it’s fun! “Many of the kids are excited simply because they are getting an opportunity to emulate their parents,” explains Raymond, a senior trainer at Spry. “They see their parents’ results and the pride that comes with that – it’s contagious.”

The all-encompassing fitness program at Spry helps to lay the foundation for total body fitness. It encourages good mental health with exercises that focus on enhancing the brain’s metabolism, improving memory and the quality of sleep. The exercises also tend to help build stronger immune systems and develop stronger bone and muscle structures while increasing blood flow around the body. Childhood obesity and the associated challenges are mitigated firstly by understanding just how easy it is to arrive at that point. In today’s world, it takes little effort for our children to gain weight especially if we are not vigilant about what enters our their little bodies and what levels of activity they engage in. And Spry addresses this intelligently. Jae’s ultimate goal is “to defeat growing childhood obesity and improve structural integrity, taking them into young
adulthood with good posture and fitness awareness.” With programmes like Spry Kids, parents get the opportunity to cement another area of valuable development in their child’s foundation. I think we all agree that we invest today towards reaping tomorrow. We strive for a good education, optimum health and with key physical activity we are that much closer to raising strong, confident and self-assured children. hey say that charity begins at home. It’s an old adage that according to most definitions, means that your responsibility to others should firstly be for those closest to you. The Sandals Foundation, whose home is the Caribbean, subscribes to this belief and adheres to its charge in both promise and deed. The Sandals Foundation has supported and contributed to the betterment of others through relief efforts of neighbours in need for more than 25 years. The measure of success is seen in the unending support the Foundation receives from regional and global partnering organizations and philanthropic-minded individuals. This year, on October 4, the passage of the most destructive storm in the Caribbean for the past 10 years, rendered Haiti devastated. Hurricane Matthew was responsible for the deaths of more than 1000 Haitian nationals including some 200 children. Within days of Hurricane Matthew, the Sandals Foundation mobilized help to give

amara, like most nurses within her profession, has a genuine passion for caring for others. But she’s also armed with a business degree and always knew that starting a business and working for herself was her ultimate goal. Hers is not uncommon among natural entrepreneurs who are often unfulfilled when working for others. But her journey really is one that seems destined to have happened. Mothers in business, especially baby-related businesses, are often inspired by their personal journey to motherhood. This, coupled with Tamara’s daily interaction with mothers-to-be cemented her interest in creating and providing skincare products to solve pregnancy related concerns. Chatting with Tamara, we learn a bit more about why she does what she does, and just how she balances it all – a business, a personal brand and a beautiful family! .
What were the things you had to consider before officially leaving your profession as a nurse?
My first priority was considering how it would affect my family. My life had so many facets to take into consideration: The Spoiled Mama was growing so fast and needed me more present, I had a great career in healthcare and two kiddos (our daughter was only 3 months old!). Additionally, we had just moved across the Bay, which made my commute to the hospital much longer. The additional time on the road was taking time away from my family and business, so something had to change. Honestly, it was not an easy decision -but I knew if I wanted a healthy work/life balance, I had to make a change. Leaving healthcare turned out to be a good decision, even though I still miss visiting with patients and seeing my co-workers.

"MY FAILURES HAVE BEEN MY GREATEST TEACHERS AND TEST OF FAITH."
What would you say to other women who are considering becoming Momtrepreneurs?
I believe that one doesn’t set out to become a ‘momtrepreneur.’ It is a destination we reach in following our passion. When your work is your passion, it’s no longer work. Becoming a ‘momtrepreneur’ is a rare opportunity to align your career with your overall life goals and passion. However, if you have little ones, be mindful of the fact that your children are only babies and toddlers for a short time. Those early years are precious and fleeting, so be sure not to short-change your time with them. Being an entrepreneur can provide wonderful flexibility, but it’s up to you to set limits. So in my opinion, the first step is to define your life goals, passions and expectations of yourself and your relationships. As far as getting started and growing your business, The Spoiled Mama began with guerrilla marketing! It takes sweat equity, but is well worth it. Reach out to the entrepreneur community: start with your own network of family, friends and work colleagues. Leverage online networking tools such as Linkedin, Facebook and blogs. Research and identify the organizations in your area that support the startup community. Then, don’t just join -- engage & interact. Participate in onsite events, as well as webinars and online groups. Identify some momtrepreneurs you want to emulate and follow their businesses, read their blogs and ask for advice. Make the connection and find a mentor.
What makes it all worthwhile for you?
Everything! I love providing safe and effective products to moms, hearing the love from our customers, and working alongside my amazing team at TSM. I also love showing my children my work ethic, and teaching them they can have a dream and pursue it...at any age! Growing up, my parents taught me the two most

important things in life are: having fun and learning. I am having fun and learning every day, and that makes it worthwhile.
.
Knowing what you know today, is there anything you would have done differently in the beginning of becoming a Momtrepreneur?
I would not change a thing. My failures have been my greatest teachers and test of faith. One of my favorite quotes is from Thomas A. Edison: “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.”
How do you maintain focus on days when life ‘gets in the way.’
This is tough. It’s a challenge I struggle with in two ways: First, I’ve made the mistake of putting The Spoiled Mama first and foremost, and not allowing ANYTHING to get in my way. Thankfully, I have an amazing and extremely supportive husband who understands me and what needs to be done to run TSM. When work becomes especially demanding (for example: a new website launch), my husband and I make sure to have regular “check-ins” to see how we’re feeling and managing. This allows us to keep communication open, de-stress and work as a unit. Secondly, outside of major work events, I believe you have to maintain a healthy work/life balance. You truly MUST be conscientious of this, which can be really challenging in the beginning of a startup business (especially if you’re a “one-woman show”). But remember what they say: “If Mama ain’t happy, nobody’s happy!” This is true in my house, and simply means you should value your personal time too. Yes, it can be challenging! I really have to say again: my husband is a big part of The Spoiled Mama’s success, and my own success. I had a dream and he encouraged me to run with it...he is still my biggest supporter. It

really takes a village to keep it all going -- I really wouldn’t have made it this far by myself! It’s really thanks to our customers, the TSM staff and plain old GRIT that makes it happen each day.,
What’s the most important lesson that you have learned from your children?
Ahhh...my children. I have a boy (10) and girl (4), and they’re the best. They remind me that I need to stop and breathe. To take time to enjoy things that are simple, like sitting on the grass and watching a butterfly go by. They’ve taught me that making a mess is OK (and can even be fun!). Whenever I forget to leave the hat at the office, my children remind me not be so serious...to just let go and have fun.
how special that time was until after our son was born. Consider going on a “babymoon,” or just enjoying the freedom of sleeping in -- it’s all going to change soon! After baby arrives, remember to make time for yourself and for your partner. I know many parents feel guilty for having “me-time,” but I encourage you to have hobbies, see your friends and do things you enjoy. Motherhood can be stressful, so I think it’s healthy to “reset” to better deal with challenges and appreciate all the amazing moments of being a parent. “Spoil yourself a little.” :)
Your work is immersed in all things maternal. What advice can you share with our expectant mothers (and fathers) that you believe will make their journey more rewarding?
For first-time parents: Appreciate the time you have alone together before baby arrives. I know this can be difficult, but I didn’t realize

Kids Will Be Kids .

My daughter constantly complains about tummyaches. Some days I think it just nerves, other days I wonder if it is a reaction to something she ate. How do I know if it is something that I should be concerned about and when should I take to the Doctor?
Recurrent abdominal pains is one of the most common complaints seen in children. It accounts for many days missed from school and often times repeated examinations that are normal. In most cases a treatable cause is not found and this leads to many anxious parents such as yourself. Some of the red flags associated with recurrent abdominal pain are : persistent vomiting or diarrhea, blood in the stool or vomitus, weight loss, unexplained fever, persistent pain occurring in a specific spot at all times and a family history of inflammatory bowel disease. I would suggest that you take your daughter to see a physician. A thorough history and physical examination would help in determining whether there is a treatable cause for her abdominal pain or just nerves. In addition, ”just nerves” should not be taken lightly. There is usually an underlying emotional cause that should be addressed.

Beyond My son coughs and coughs. As soon as a round of antibiotics is over the coughing starts right back. What could be the cause if there is no wheezing?
Your son could be coughing because of irritation anywhere from his nose to the small airways of his lungs. The most common cause of coughing in children is an upper respiratory tract infection. This can be the result of viruses they are exposed to in the school environment. Children can get up to 10 colds per year, each lasting 5 to 7 days. In most cases, the cough will last longer than the runny nose and sneezing. If he is getting colds back to back it may seem like he is always coughing. Other causes include allergies, asthma and acid reflux (to name a few). Kids with asthma may present with prolonged coughing without wheezing. So the fact that your son is not wheezing does not rule out asthma. A more detailed history and examination would assist in determining the cause of your son’s recurrent coughing.
.
My daughter just turned 5 years old and she has an imaginary friend who she talks and plays with. These days she seems more interested in spending time with her imaginary friend than she does with her real ones. Should I be worried about this behavior?
Imaginary friends are more common than you might think among 5-year-olds. Studies have shown that a significant number of children between the ages of 3 and 5 have an imaginary friend. Although most children outgrow their imaginary friends some will persist beyond this age. In most cases there is no cause for alarm as imaginary friends can serve useful purposes e.g. dealing with difficult emotions. Having an imaginary friend is also an indication of a creative mind. Don’t get upset with her for having the relationship and don’t try to become friends with her imaginary friend. Go along with the scenario, but within limits. What is a little concerning is the fact that your daughter now prefers to spend more time with her imaginary friends rather than her real ones. This might be her way of dealing with an underlying problem. Imaginary friends eventually disappear, however if she continues to focus mainly on her imaginary friend you should consider seeking professional help.
