Welkom op de 6e editie van ons festival! 25 ensembles tonen je het neusje van de zalm en de rijke variëteit van een regio die bruist van leven en van culturen. Het is een plezier om de sterke tradities te delen uit Roemenië, Albanië, Macedonië, Griekenland, Servië, Turkije, Macedonië, Bosnië en Kosovo. We presenteren de meest bekende Romagroep van de wereld, Taraf de Haïdouks, en een hommage aan de koning van de etnojazz, Ivo Papasov. We dompelen je onder in de wondermooie polyfonie van Albanië die stamt uit de Griekse oudheid. De levende rembetiko, sevdah en manouche maak je mee in speciaal ingerichte cafés. De nieuwe Europeanen uit binnen- en buitenland brengen de energie, trots en zelfzekerheid die Europa nodig heeft om met de wereld mee te gaan. Levensvreugde, solidariteit, kwaliteit en inzet maken van dit festival een intense ervaring met echte ontmoetingen, ook gastronomisch, met onze broeders en zusters aan de zuidoostelijke rand van Europa. Bienvenue à la 6e édition de notre festival ! 25 ensembles vont vous faire découvrir la crème de la crème et la riche diversité d’une région qui bouillonne de vie et de culture. C’est avec plaisir que nous vous initierons aux riches traditions de la Roumanie, de l’Albanie, de la Macédoine, de la Grèce, de la Serbie, de la Turquie, de la Bosnie et du Kosovo. Non seulement nous vous présenterons le groupe rom le plus célèbre du monde, Taraf de Haïdouks, et rendrons un hommage au roi de l’ethno-jazz, Ivo Papasov, mais nous vous plongerons aussi dans la merveilleuse polyphonie albanaise, qui remonte à la Grèce antique. Nous vous ferons découvrir le rembetiko, le sevdah et la musique manouche dans des cafés spécialement conçus à cet effet. Les nouveaux Européens, chez nous et ailleurs, nous apportent l’énergie, la fierté et l’assurance dont l’Europe a tant besoin pour aller de l’avant. Joie de vivre, solidarité, qualité et dévouement font de ce festival une expérience intense, remplie de rencontres enrichissantes et de découvertes gastronomiques avec nos frères et sœurs du Sud-Est de l’Europe. Welcome to the 6th edition of our Festival! 25 ensembles will present the cream of Balkan music and show the wealth and variety of a region bursting with life and teeming with different cultures. It is a great pleasure to be able to share the wonderful traditions of Romania, Albania, Macedonia, Greece, Serbia, Turkey, Macedonia, Bosnia, and Kosovo. Not only will we have the world’s most celebrated Roma group, Taraf de Haïdouks, and a tribute to the king of ethno jazz, Ivo Papasov, but we will also immerse you in the stunningly beautiful polyphony of Albania, which has its roots in Greek Antiquity, and let you experience live rembetiko, sevdah, and manouche in specially arranged cafes. New Europeans, whether based here in Belgium or abroad, bring us the energy, pride, and self-confidence Europe needs to move forward. Zest for life, solidarity, quality, and commitment make this festival an intense experience during which you can really get to know our brothers and sisters from the south-eastern edge of Europe – including their food and drink. BALKAN TRAFIK!: CONCEPT NL

Balkan Trafik staat voor verkeer van culturen en ervaringen, waarbij sleutels worden aangeboden voor integratie, communicatie, samen beleven en zich open stellen naar anderen. Het festival wil de bestaande vooroordelen over de Balkanlanden ontkrachten door de culturele rijkheid en verscheidenheid van de regio te tonen. In een sfeer van samenhorigheid en gezelligheid wordt de realiteit van de Balkan aan het publiek voorgesteld. Het Turkse woord Balkan betekent ‘beboste berg’. Alle beboste bergen kunnen Balkan genoemd worden, maar ‘de Balkan’ is het indrukwekkende gebergte dat zich van oost naar west dwars door Bulgarije uitstrekt en ten noorden van de Donau overgaat in de Karpaten. Bovendien is het het gebied dat gevormd wordt door de diverse staten in Europa die ontstaan zijn uit het uiteenvallen van het Ottomaanse Rijk. De Balkanregio wordt gekenmerkt door een grote diversiteit aan expressiviteit die samenhangt met een heel diverse etnische herkomst. Dat maakt dat ook de muziek een mengeling is van lokale klanken: Turkse ritmen, koperblazergeluiden, traditionele dansen uit Albanië, rembetiko, Bosnische sevdah, Roma-liedjes en snelle accordeonmelodieën. De Oosterse inspiratie in de Balkanmuziek kwam er door de vele Roma die zich over de hele Balkan verspreid hebben. En overal waar ze gaan, nemen ze woorden en andere culturele kenmerken mee van de lokale bevolking en voegen die toe aan hun eigen taal, aan hun eigen cultuur. Zo laat ook hun muziek in haar ritmen en klankkleuren de invloed horen van elk land dat wordt bezocht. Maar in het hart van dat alles, in het centrum van die complexe mozaïek, is het de Ottomaanse traditie die overal in doorklinkt. Om een artistiek programma als dat van Balkan Trafik te doen slagen, ontwikkelen het Paleis voor Schone Kunsten en 1001 Valises een steeds groter netwerk in de Balkanlanden en de diaspora in eigen land. Zo wordt een nauwe link met de geschiedenis en de artistieke realiteit van de regio gegarandeerd. In het Paleis komen alle kunstvormen tot hun recht: muziek, film, theater, dans, expo, workshops, …

Balkan Trafik est un trafic de cultures et d’expériences offrant des clefs pour l’intégration, la communication, le partage et l’ouverture à l’autre. Ce festival a pour but de prendre de la distance avec les clichés visant les pays des Balkans, en montrant la richesse et la diversité culturelle de la région. La réalité des Balkans est présentée au public en toute objectivité, dans une ambiance accueillante et chaleureuse. Signifiant littéralement « chaîne de montagnes boisée », le terme turc Balkan désigne à l’origine l’imposante chaîne de montagnes qui traverse la Bulgarie d’est en ouest, et qui rejoint les Carpates au nord du Danube. De manière plus générale, on considère que les Balkans constituent le territoire formé par les différents États d’Europe nés de la désintégration de l’Empire ottoman. La région des Balkans est caractérisée par une grande diversité de formes d’expression trouvant son origine dans un passé ethnique particulièrement riche et varié. Ceci explique également que la musique des Balkans forme un mélange de différents styles locaux : rythmes turcs, sonorités de cuivres, danses traditionnelles d’Albanie, rembetiko, sevdah bosniaque, chansons roms et mélodies rapides à l’accordéon. L’inspiration orientale que l’on retrouve dans la musique des Balkans est plus facile à retracer et à expliquer lorsque l’on sait que de nombreux Tsiganes se sont dispersés à travers tous les pays des Balkans. Partout où ils vont, les Tsiganes assimilent des mots et d’autres caractéristiques culturelles de la population locale et les incorporent à leur propre langue, à leur propre culture. C’est pourquoi on perçoit, dans les rythmes et les sonorités de leur musique, l’influence de chaque pays qu’ils ont visité. Toutefois, au cœur de cette grande mosaïque complexe, c’est bien la tradition ottomane qui vibre partout. Pour réussir une programmation artistique comme celle de Balkan Trafik, le Palais des Beaux-Arts et 1001 Valises créent un véritable réseau à travers les pays balkaniques et les diasporas en Belgique, assurant une connexion entre l’histoire et la réalité artistique de ces pays. La structure du Palais permet d’accueillir toutes les formes d’art : musique, film, théâtre, danse, ateliers, expositions, animations…

BALKAN TRAFIK!: CONCEPT

Balkan Trafik stands for an exchange of culture and experience, where the doors are opened to integration, communication, sharing experiences, and opening up to others. The festival wants to dispel prejudice against the Balkan countries by showing the cultural richness and diversity of the region. In an atmosphere of unity and companionship the real Balkans are truthfully presented to the audience. The Turkish word balkan means ‘wooded mountain’. Although all wooded mountains could therefore be called balkan, ‘the Balkans’ refers to the impressive mountain range that extends east-west across Bulgaria, joining the Carpathian Mountains to the North of the Danube. It is also the name given to the region made up of the various European states that emerged out of the disintegration of the Ottoman Empire. The Balkan region became characterised by a huge diversity of expression linked to its very diverse ethnic backgrounds. This also created music that was a mixture of local sounds: Turkish rhythms, brass sounds, traditional Albanian dances, rembetiko, Bosnian sevdah, Roma gypsy songs, and fast accordion melodies. The Eastern inspiration in Balkan music is easily recognised and explained when you know that many Roma gypsies scattered themselves throughout the whole of the Balkans. And wherever they go, they adopt words and other cultural characteristics from the local inhabitants, adding them to their own language and their own culture. Hence the influence of each country they visited can be heard in the rhythms and tones of their music. At the heart of everything, however, in the centre of this complex mosaic, it is the Ottoman tradition that shines through. In order to succeed with an artistic programme such as that of Balkan Trafik, the Centre for Fine Arts and 1001 Valises are developing a growing network in the Balkan countries and the Diaspora in this country. A close link between the history and the current artistic reality of the region is thus guaranteed. In the Centre all art forms are given a place: music, film, theatre, dance, workshops, exhibitions and animations.

Een verpleegster, een paramedicus, een turnster en haar trainer hebben samen een verhuurbedrijf opgericht. Op bestelling van familieleden, vrienden of collega’s springen ze in voor overleden mensen. De firma heet Alps. Hun leider, de paramedicus, noemt zichzelf Mont Blanc. De leden van Alps handelen volgens de strikte discipline die hun leider oplegt, maar de verpleegster heeft zo haar eigen opvattingen. Filmregisseur Yorgos Lanthimos (Athene, 1973) maakte zijn speelfilmdebuut met Kinetta (2005) op de festivals van Toronto en Berlijn. Zijn tweede film Kynodontas (Dogtooth) won de Un Certain Regard-prijs in Cannes in 2009 en werd genomineerd als beste niet-Engelstalige film voor de Oscars 2011. FR

Leur société s’appelle Alps. Leur chef, le conducteur d’ambulance, se fait appeler Mont Blanc. Même si ce dernier attend de ses membres qu’ils opèrent selon des règles strictes, l’infirmière se permet quelques écarts. Kinetta (2005), le premier long métrage de Yorgos Lanthimos (Athènes, 1973) a été projeté aux festivals de Toronto et de Berlin. Kynïdontas (Canine), son deuxième long-métrage, a remporté le prix Un certain regard à Cannes, en 2009, et a été nominé aux Oscars dans la catégorie « Meilleur film étranger », en 2011. 8

A nurse, a paramedic, a gymnast and her coach have formed a service for hire. They stand in for dead people by appointment, hired by the relatives, friends or colleagues of the deceased. The company is called Alps. Their leader, the paramedic, calls himself Mont Blanc. Although Alps members operate under a disciplined regime demanded by their leader, the nurse does not. Ensemble Dropulli of Gjirokaster & special guest Josif Shukallari (AL) NL

Volkskunstgroep Dropuli is afkomstig uit de zuidelijke stad Gjirokastër, het centrum van de Albanese isopolyfonie. Dat is een bijzondere vorm van samenzang die sterk verwant is met de Griekse polyfonie over de grens. Niet toevallig behoren de leden van Dropulli stuk voor stuk tot de Griekse minderheid in Albanië. Speciaal voor deze gelegenheid krijgen ze het gezelschap van Josif Shukallari, de Albanese meester van de ‘klagende klarinet’, die als uniek wordt beschouwd omdat hij de eeuwenoude traditionele volksmuziek voortzet. Hij is afkomstig uit de Permet-streek, waar hij bruiloften en allerlei feesten opvrolijkt. FR

Le groupe folklorique Dropulli est originaire de la ville méridionale de Gjirokastër, le centre de l’isopolyphonie albanaise. Il s’agit d’une forme particulière de chants à l’unisson fortement apparentée à la polyphonie grecque, de l’autre côté de la mer. Ce n’est d’ailleurs pas un hasard si les membres de Dropulli font partie de la minorité grecque d’Albanie. Pour l’occasion, ils seront accompagnés de Josif Shukallari, le maître albanais de la clarinette, personnage emblématique qui perpétue la musique traditionnelle séculaire. Il est originaire de la région de Pemet, où il égaie les mariages et autres fêtes. EN

The folk arts group Dropulli comes from the southern city of Gjirokastër, the centre of Albanian iso-polyphony, a strange form of part-singing that is closely related to the polyphony found over the border in Greece. It is no coincidence that the members of Dropulli all belong to the Greek minority in Albania. They are joined for the occasion by Josif Shukallari, the Albanian master of the plaintive clarinet, who comes from the Permet district, where he livens up weddings and all sorts of festivities.

De leden van dit gemengd Belgisch-Roemeens-Bulgaarse gezelschap met uitvalsbasis Brussel hebben één ding gemeen, namelijk hun passie voor muziek uit de Balkan. Orthodoxie is aan hen niet besteed, dus vermengen ze vrolijk diverse stijlen en invloeden. Meeslepende melodieën en levendige dansmuziek uit diverse contreien serveren ze op een manier die soms naar de jazz neigt. Zongora bracht vorig jaar de cd Doverie uit, maar heeft vooral een uitstekende livereputatie. FR

Les membres de cette compagnie belgo-roumano-bulgare implantée à Bruxelles ont un point commun : leur passion pour la musique des Balkans. L’orthodoxie ne fait pas partie de leur vocabulaire : ils mélangent joyeusement tous les styles et les influences. Ils jouent des mélodies entraînantes et de la musique dansante de diverses contrées d’une manière qui rappelle parfois le jazz. Zongora a sorti l’an dernier un album intitulé Doverie, mais a surtout la réputation d’être un monstre de scène. EN

The members of this Brussels-based Belgian-Romanian-Bulgarian outfit have one thing in common: a passion for the music of the Balkans. Orthodoxy is not really their thing, so they blend a variety of styles and influences. They serve up infectious melodies and lively dance music from different regions in a way that sometimes comes close to jazz. Last year, Zongora released the album Doverie, but is known, above all, for its superb live performances. Brace yourself for a concert that is sure to bowl you over!

Ion Faur werd geboren in het Roemeense dorpje Brasov, waar hij al snel de knepen van de accordeon onder de knie krijgt. Na een reeks omzwervingen vestigt hij zich als Roberto de Brasov in Frankrijk en de rest is geschiedenis. The king of Carpathian swing vermengt ballades, Turkse danswijsjes, zigeunercapriolen en asymmetrische aksak-ritmen in een aanstekelijke en hoogst persoonlijke mix van Balkanmuziek, jazz en blues. Ion Faur est né dans le petit village roumain de Brasov, où il a appris à maîtriser l’accordéon jusqu’au bout des doigts. Après quelques pérégrinations, il s’installe en France sous le nom de Roberto de Brasov. Le reste fait partie de l’histoire. Le King of Carpathian swing mélange ballades, airs de danse turcs, cabrioles tsiganes et rythmes asymétriques asak dans un mix entraînant et très personnel de musique balkanique, de jazz et de blues. Ion Faur was born in Brasov in Romania, where he learned all there was to know about the accordion at an early age. His wanderings eventually took him to France, where he settled down as Roberto de Brasov – and the rest is history. The king of Carpathian swing mixes ballads, Turkish dance tunes, gypsy capers, and asymmetric aksak rhythms in an infectious, highly individual blend of Balkan music, jazz and blues.

Kirika (TR) NL

Kirika breekt een lans voor de cultuur van de Egeïsche zee, in en om de steden Istanboel, Smyrna/Izmir en Thessaloniki. Eten, drinken, zingen, dansen, de vervoering van Dionysius… De bijbehorende muziek ontstond eind 19e eeuw in de kosmopolitische centra van het Ottomaanse rijk en kende tot in de jaren 1960 een bloeiend bestaan in cafés en cabarets. Zonder nostalgie maar geïnspireerd door de traditie vertalen deze muzikanten de roes van strand en wijn in eigentijdse stadsfolk. FR

Kirika défend la culture de la mer Égée, dans et autour des villes d’Istanbul, de Smyrne/Izmir et de Thessalonique. Manger, boire, chanter, danser, le tout dans l’esprit de Dionysos. La musique que joue Kirika est apparue à la fin du XIXe siècle dans les centres cosmopolites de l’Empire ottoman et a prospéré dans les cafés et cabarets jusque dans les années 1960. Sans nostalgie mais inspirés par la tradition, ces musiciens traduisent l’ivresse de la plage et du vin dans un folk urbain contemporain. EN

Kirika raises the banner of the culture of the Aegean Sea, in and around the cities of Istanbul, Smyrna/Izmir, and Thessaloniki. Eating, drinking, singing, dancing, the raptures of Dionysus… The music in question emerged in the late 19th century in the cosmopolitan centres of the Ottoman empire and flourished in cafes and cabarets until the 1960s. Without nostalgia, but inspired by the tradition, the musicians of Kirika translate the pleasures of the beach and of wine into contemporary urban folk.

Deze 26-koppige all star band is een samenwerking tussen twee van de populairste zigeunergroepen van het moment, die eerder al Couleur Café en de Ancienne Belgique in vuur en vlam zetten. Taraf de Haïdouks uit Roemenië verovert al 20 jaar de wereld met zijn sfeervolle ballades en dansnummers. Het Koçani Orkestar uit Macedonië geldt als een van de meest funky brassbands van de planeet. Ce all-stars band de 26 musiciens, réunissant deux des groupes les plus populaires de musique tsigane du moment, a déjà mis le feu aux scènes de Couleur Café et de l’Ancienne Belgique. Taraf de Haïdouks, de Roumanie, a conquis le monde depuis 20 ans déjà grâce à des ballades chaleureuses et des morceaux dansants. Le Koçani Orkestar, de Macédoine, est l’un des brassbands les plus funky de la planète. EN

This all-star band is a collaboration between two of the most popular gypsy groups around, who previously set Couleur Café and Ancienne Belgique on fire. It is 20 years now since Taraf de Haïdouks from Romania first conquered the world with their atmospheric ballads and dance numbers. The Koçani Orkestar from Macedonia is one of the funkiest brass bands on the planet right now. The two bands recently recorded a full studio album together, on which the violins and accordions of Taraf make a splendid contrast with the brass and percussion of Koçani.

Amsterdam Klezmer Band (NL) NL

Vermeng een royale portie klezmer met een snuifje ska, een wolkje Balkan en een tufje zigeunermuziek. Breng op smaak met jazz en punk en ga er met de mixer door. Het resultaat is de dansbare feestmuziek waar de Amsterdam Klezmer Band het patent lijkt op te hebben. Hun nieuwe live-cd Mokum is de kroon op 15 jaar carrière die ooit begon als het tijdverdrijf van een stel vrienden. Op Mokum – het Jiddisch woord voor ‘stad’ en slang voor ‘Amsterdam’ – laat de band horen dat ze niet hebben ingeboet aan inspiratie en positieve energie. FR

Vous obtiendrez la musique festive et dansante dont l’Amsterdam Klemzer Band semble avoir déposé le brevet. Leur nouvel album live, Mokum, vient couronner 15 ans d’une carrière qui a commencé comme un simple hobby entre copains. De rembetiko is een populair Grieks muziekgenre dat ontstond in de jaren ’20 en ook wel eens de ‘Griekse blues’ wordt genoemd. Het was toen ook een manier van leven. Via hun muziek exploreren de muzikanten enkele fundamentele thema’s zoals de liefde, het lijden en de dood. Michel Hatzi (voluit Hatzigeorgiou) is geen onbekende voor de Brusselse concertgangers. Al bijna 20 jaar maakt deze avontuurlijke bassist het mooie weer bij Aka Moon en hij speelde ook met de groten van de binnen- en buitenlandse jazz. Minder bekend zijn ’s mans Griekse roots en het feit dat hij in zijn jeugd bouzouki speelde, een instrument dat hij sinds een tijdje weer heeft opgenomen. Voor dit project werkt hij samen met bouzoukivirtuoos Manolis Pappos, zangeres Anatoli Mariola en gitarist Nikos Giras.

À l’époque, le rembetiko, en plus d’être un genre musical, est aussi un mode de vie : les musiciens explorent, par leur musique, des thèmes fondamentaux tels l’amour, la souffrance et la mort. Michel Hatzi (de son nom complet Hatzigeorgiou) est connu des amateurs de musique bruxellois. Depuis 20 ans déjà, ce bassiste audacieux connaît le succès avec Aka Moon et il a déjà joué avec des pointures du jazz belges et étrangères. Ses racines grecques sont moins connues, tout comme le fait qu’il ait joué du bouzouki dans sa jeunesse, un instrument auquel il s’est remis depuis quelques années. Pour ce projet, il s’est associé au maître du bouzouki, Manolis Pappos, à la chanteuse Anatoli Mariola et au guitariste Nikos Giras. EN

De sevdah of sevdalinka kun je nog het beste vergelijken met de Portugese fado. In het Bosnisch betekent sevdah ‘liefde’ of ‘streling’. Het bij uitstek vrouwelijke genre staat voor songs vol liefdessmart en smachtend verlangen. Maar in het Sevdah Kafana worden de muzikale lijnen uitgezet door The Old Bridge, een duo (mannelijke) gitaristen, en zanger Cerkez, allemaal leden van het groep Mostar Sevdah Reunion. Hun naam verwijst naar de brug in Mostar die de moslim- en de christenwijken van de stad met elkaar verbindt. In hun tegelijk virtuoze en emotionele muziek verbinden ze de Balkan met blues en flamenco. FR

Sevdah or sevdalinka has been likened to Portuguese fado. In Bosnian, sevdah means “love” or “caress”. In this pre-eminently female genre the songs are full of the pains of love and lovelorn yearning. Het repertoire van de Liquidation Band telt vandaag enkele traditionele werken, maar brengt vooral originele composities, die op de grens van traditionele Balkanmuziek en jazz balanceren en met veel energie worden gespeeld. Dans ce projet créé spécialement pour Balkan Trafik en collaboration avec des associations actives en faveur des populations roms, Nicolas Hauzeur du groupe Zongora, dirige une série de musiciens de rue et d’orchestres de mariage travaillant hors du circuit des festivals et des concerts. Les musiciens de rue sont des artistes sans management, parfois sans statut, certains ayant émigré vers la Belgique pour des raisons économiques. Parmi eux, des solistes confirmés avec déjà une longue carrière. Les « musiciens de mariage » répondent à la demande des populations installées chez nous et se déplacent là où ils sont appelés. Véritable périple musical allant de la Moldavie à Timisoara, d’Istanbul à Skopje, Brussels Underground vous fera découvrir des musiciens comme Marian Raducan, Costel Ursulets ou encore Pecho Elmazov. Enfin, les danseuses bulgares du groupe Svetulka, la chanteuse roumaine Sanda de la Curcan et la danseuse grecque Areti Prosilia ajouteront une touche de grâce et de féminité à ce rendez-vous 100 % Balkan Trafik. In Brussels Underground, imagined for Balkan Trafik in collaboration with associations active in the Roma community, Nicolas Hauzeur of the group Zongora brings together an array of street and wedding musicians who work outside the traditional music circuit. Street musicians have no management and sometimes no clear status. Among these artists emigrated to Belgium because of difficult economic circumstances, are sometimes well-known soloists with extensive careers in their own countries. Wedding musicians are a new kind of nomad population that moves around at the demand of emigrated communities. Brussels Underground is a musical journey that will take you from Moldavia to Timisoara, from Istanbul to Skopje, guided by musicians such as Marian Raducan, Costel Ursulets and Pecho Elmazov. The Bulgarian dancers of Svetulka, Romanian singer Sanda de la Curcan, and Greek dancer Areti Prosilia give this 100% Balkan Trafik project an extra touch of femininity and grace. 30

Het koor, genoemd naar de moskee in Sarajevo waar ze samenkwamen, werd opgericht tijdens de oorlog in het voormalige Joegoslavië. Hun specialiteit zijn Ilahije i Kaside, de religieuze liederen van de Bosnische soefi’s, maar hun repertoire omvat ook sevdah en popmuziek. Ze gelden als een van de pioniers van de Muslim New Age (een mix van religieuze muziek met new age-elementen) en geven concerten over de hele wereld op diverse festivals. Het 15-koppige koor komt naar Balkan Trafik met een programma van hemelse soefiliederen. FR

Le chœur Hazreti Hamza, qui tire son nom de la mosquée de Sarajevo où ses membres se réunissaient, a été fondé pendant la guerre en ex-Yougoslavie. Sa spécialité est les Ilahije i Kaside, chansons religieuses des Bosniaques d’obédience soufi, mais leur répertoire comprend aussi de la sevdah et de la musique pop. Le chœur, connu comme étant un des pionniers du Muslim New Age (un mélange de musique religieuse et d’éléments new age), se produit dans le monde entier. Na de val van Ceauşescu keert hij terug naar zijn geboorteland en verdiept hij zich in zijn eigen muzikale wortels. Zijn nieuwe project met de Fanfare Zece Prajini bouwt voort op het model van de feestelijke volksfanfares uit oostelijk Roemenië. FR

Le batteur et percussionniste �� Ovidiu Lipan �� a remporté un franc succès auprès d’une série de groupes de rock et de jazz roumains, avant de déménager en Allemagne, où il dirige son propre big band. Ze voelen zich niet te beroerd om ook traditionele instrumenten te gebruiken en het lokale Gheg-dialect is ook niet meteen een wereldtaal. Maar met hun potige cocktail van rock, grunge, elektronica en folk kunnen ze wel rekenen op een groeiende schare fans. FR

Avec leur formation classique, ils ont tout l’air d’un groupe de rock normal. Mais les rockeurs kosovars de Jericho sont bien plus que ça ! Ils n’ont pas peur d’utiliser des instruments traditionnels et de chanter dans le dialecte guègue local, qui n’est pas vraiment une langue universelle. Mais grâce à un puissant cocktail de rock, de grunge, d’électro et de folk, ils peuvent compter sur un vaste fan club.

With their classic line-up, they look like your standard rock group, but there is more to these Kosovan rockers than that. They are not afraid to use traditional instruments too – or to sing in their local Gheg dialect, not exactly a major international language. But their powerful cocktail of rock, grunge, electronica, and folk has won them a growing army of fans.

Set over a single early-1960s summer in one of Sarajevo’s neighbourhoods, the plot follows the fortunes of a school boy nicknamed Dino. The lad is enthralled with a life that flashes before his eyes and ears in the local cinema and youth centre (where, among other things, he watches Alessandro Blasetti’s Europa di notte and listens to Adriano Celentano’s 24 mila baci), while at the same time getting a taste of the world inhabited by local thugs and petty criminals. Het restaurant Trilogia presenteert Griekse specialiteiten (traditionele pita, patisserie) in het Rembetiko Kafe. De traditionele Bosnische keuken is ook aanwezig, zelfs met een barbecue! De vzw Gratiartis verkoopt specialiteiten als burek en mezze. De restaurants Hungarian Dreams en Plitvice bieden dan weer Hongaarse en Kroatische specialiteiten aan. Dit jaar staat de Balkan Bazaar niet binnen, maar net buiten het Paleis. Je kunt er muziek- en dansgroepen ontdekken, maar ook de Romacaravan van Tania Magy, de banc à palabres, een bar en barbecue. Dankzij de typische decoratie komen de sferen en geuren van de oude stadswijken in de Balkan in de Bazaar tot leven. Een plek voor feest, ontmoeting en ontdekking. FR

Cette année le Balkan Bazaar déménage dans un tout nouvel espace à l’extérieur du Palais des Beaux-Arts. Au programme, des groupes découvertes, l’Art Rom Caravane de Tania Magy, banc à palabres, bar et grillade. Grâce à sa décoration typique, vous retrouverez les ambiances et les senteurs des vieux quartiers des Balkans. Le Balkan Bazaar se veut un endroit de fête, de rencontre et de découverte. EN

This year’s Balkan Bazaar will be just outside the Centre for Fine Arts, not inside. It will feature music and dance groups, as well as Tania Magy’s Roma caravan, the Banc à palabres, a bar, and a barbecue. The Bazaar, with its characteristic decoration, brings to life the atmosphere and aromas of the old districts of Balkan towns. A place for partying, meeting, and discovering.

Art Rom Caravane BUITEN | À L’EXTERIEUR | OUTSIDE NL

Het Caravanmuseum werd in 2004 gecreëerd door beeldend kunstenares Tania Magy (ngo Art’Rom de Voyage), zelf woonwagenbewoonster, om het brede publiek hedendaagse kunstuitingen van de Roma en zigeuners te laten ontdekken. De caravan laat een dialoog toe over het begrip ‘minderheid’ en toont de levenswijze van zigeuners, Roma en andere ‘reizigers’, vroeger en nu. FR

L’Art Rom Caravane a été créée en 2004 par la plasticienne Tania Magy (ONG Art’Rom de Voyage), elle-même membre de la communauté des gens du voyage. Son objectif ? Faire découvrir aux spectateurs des expressions contemporaines de l’art rom, et des voyages. Cette caravane est aussi un moyen d’entamer le dialogue sur la notion de minorité et montre le quotidien chez les Roms, gitans, yeniches et autres voyageurs, qu’ils soient du passé ou du présent. EN

The Caravan museum was founded in 2004 by the visual artist Tania Magy (of the Art’Rom de Voyage non-profit association), in order to introduce the general public to contemporary art by Roma and gypsies. The caravan also encourages a dialogue about the concept of the “minority” and shows the way of life of gypsies, Roma, and other “travellers”, now and in the past.

Tijdens deze zesde editie verwelkomt Balkan Trafik een burgerinitiatief dat strijdt tegen het isolement van ouderen. Het werkelijke doel is de aanwezigheid van ouderen in het publieke leven, aan te moedigen. Een project van de vzw Alternative Culture in het kader van het Europese Jaar rond de ‘Actieve veroudering en de solidariteit tussen generaties’ en de campagne 'Ik heb wat voorsprong – De schreeuw van de senioren'. Pour cette 6e édition, Balkan Trafik accueille une initiative citoyenne qui lutte contre l’isolement des personnes âgées. Le but est d’encourager la présence de nos aînés dans les espaces publics. Un projet de l’asbl Alternative Culture dans le cadre de « l’Année européenne du vieillissement actif » et de la campagne « J’ai un peu d’avance – Le grand batelage des seniors ». EN

During this sixth edition Balkan Trafik plays host to a citizens’ initiative that works to break down the isolation of older people. The real aim is to encourage the presence of our older people in public life. A project of the non-profit association Alternative Culture launched in the context of the European Year for Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations and the campaign “Ik heb wat voorsprong – De schreeuw van de senioren/J’ai un peu d’avance, le grand batelage des seniors”.
