at maakt van een tentoonstelling een buitengewone ervaring? Waarom kunstwerken in telkens weer wisselende constellaties tonen? Overdracht, daar gaat het om. Het samenspel tussen kunstenaars, kunstwerken, tentoonstellingsmakers en het publiek. Die telkens weer hernieuwde dialoog over tijd en ruimte heen. Verbanden uitlichten. Verhalen vertellen. Een zeldzaam ogenblik van klaar zien. Overdracht van energie, kennis, ervaringen, emoties, gelaagde standpunten, wereldbeelden. De dialoog tussen culturen, in en ver buiten het Europese continent. Kunst is onwaarschijnlijk genereus. Die open geest willen we met ons tentoonstellingsprogramma uitstralen. Na elke tentoonstelling is het Paleis voor Schone Kunsten weer een wit blad: een gebouw met twee wonderlijke tentoonstellingscircuits die leeg worden gemaakt. We zijn niet gebonden aan een vaste collectie om te ontsluiten, maar we werken allerminst vanuit het luchtledige. Sinds 1928 heeft het Paleis voor Schone Kunsten een onwaarschijnlijke stoet aan oude, moderne en hedendaagse meesters te gast. De geest van Cranach, Bruegel, El Greco, Vermeer, Hokusai, Ensor, Manet, Picasso, Kahlo, Hopper, Broodthaers, Warhol, Wall, noem maar op, waart door de zalen. Kunstschatten uit alle werelddelen komen hier samen. Genereus, buitensporig, buitengewoon: zo willen we ons aanbod noemen. Van een laat-12e-eeuwse icoon tot nieuw sculpturaal werk van Valérie Mannaerts. Van een tastbare stoel van Jules Wabbes tot een conceptueel werk over het verstrijken van tijd van On Kawara. In het Paleis voor Schone Kunsten blazen alle muzen verzamelen. Bij ons kunt u de onhoorbare muziek op de schilderijen van Watteau horen, de spirituele verwantschap ervaren tussen Morandi en filmmaker Antonioni, de onophoudelijke flux meemaken tussen culturen, tijden, stromingen, media, mensen. Since 1928 the Centre for Fine Arts has hosted an extraordinary succession of great old, modern, and contemporary artists. Mapping the Mediterranean Cyprus and More

NL Mapping Cyprus vormt een eerste etappe in de ontdekkingsreis die BOZAR EXPO uitstippelt langs het Middellandse Zeegebied, bakermat van culturen. De tentoonstelling focust op de positie van Cyprus als poort tussen Oost en West. Rode draad is een selectie van meer dan 50 iconen die hoogst uitzonderlijk Cyprus mogen verlaten, waarna een deel zal doorreizen naar het Louvre. In het gedeelte Contemporary views reflecteren Cypriotische kunstenaars op de sociopolitieke situatie van het eiland dat sinds 1974 is verdeeld. Met diverse partners werkt BOZAR aan drie grote tentoonstellingen over culturele uitwisselingen in en vanuit de regio: één over de diverse invloeden op de Egyptische kunst vanaf de GrieksRomeinse periode, een tweede over Ottomaanse invloeden op de Europese renaissance, en een derde over de invloed van Byzantium op de Vlaamse primitieven.

FR Mapping Cyprus est la première étape d’un voyage de découverte à travers le bassin méditerranéen, berceau de cultures, initié par BOZAR EXPO. L’exposition se concentre sur la position de Chypre comme point d’entrée entre l’Orient et l’Occident. Une cinquantaine d’icônes, exceptionnellement autorisées à quitter Chypre, en forment le fil rouge. Une partie d’entre elles prendra ensuite la direction du Louvre. Dans la partie Contemporary views, les artistes chypriotes se penchent sur la situation sociopolitique de l’île, divisée depuis 1974. Avec divers partenaires, BOZAR collabore à trois grandes expositions sur les échanges culturels dans et depuis la région : la première est dédiée aux différentes influences sur l’art égyptien depuis la période gréco-romaine, la deuxième porte sur les influences ottomanes sur la Renaissance européenne, et la troisième aborde l’influence des Byzantins sur les primitifs flamands.

EN Mapping Cyprus is the first stage in a voyage of discovery mapped out by BOZAR EXPO around the Mediterranean cradle of cultures. The exhibition focuses on the position of Cyprus as a gateway between East and West. The thread running through the exhibition is a selection of more than 50 icons that have been allowed to leave Cyprus for this unique occasion, after which some of them will travel to the Louvre. The Contemporary Views section presents the reflections of contemporary Cypriot artists on the socio-political situation of the island, divided since 1974. BOZAR is working with a number of partners on 3 major exhibitions about cultural exchanges in the region: one will look at the varied influences on Egyptian art since the Greco-Roman period, a second will deal with Ottoman influences on the European Renaissance, while the third will highlight the influence of Byzantium on the Flemish primitives.

Sense of Place focust op de gelijkenissen én verschillen in Europa, zowel in het landschap als in de houding van mensen tegenover dat landschap. Klimaat, industrie, economie, herinnering en politieke verdeeldheid tekenen landschappen. Naast de sociopolitieke dimensie komt de esthetica van de landschapsfotografie nadrukkelijk in beeld. Een ruimte wordt pas een plek via de verhalen die erover worden verteld en de manier waarop de plaats wordt ‘verbeeld’. Hoe dragen hedendaagse fotografen bij tot de beeldvorming van de omgeving en zoiets als een Europese ruimte? “Europa is Hier,” schrijft Herman Van Rompuy, voorzitter van de Europese Raad, in de catalogus. “Dit boek toont het als zodanig en biedt ons een gevoel van plaats.” 160 werken van 40 fotografen nemen u als bezoeker of lezer mee op een reis van de Noordzee tot aan het Middellandse Zeegebied.

Sense of Place se concentre sur les ressemblances et les différences en Europe, tant entre les paysages qu'entre les attitudes de l’homme par rapport à leur environnement. Le climat, l’industrie, l’économie, la mémoire et la division politique marquent le paysage de leur empreinte. En plus de la dimension sociopolitique, l’esthétique de la photographie de paysage apparaît clairement. Un espace devient un lieu uniquement à travers les histoires qui sont racontées à son sujet et la façon dont il est « représenté ». Comment les photographes contemporains contribuent-ils à la vision de l’environnement et à la notion d’espace européen ? « L’Europe est Ici », écrit Herman Van Rompuy, président du Conseil européen, dans le catalogue. « Ce livre nous le montre et nous fait découvrir ce sentiment d’appartenance. » 160 œuvres de 40 photographes embarquent visiteurs et lecteurs dans un voyage de la mer du Nord à la Méditerranée.

EN Sense of Place focuses on the similarities and differences within Europe, both in landscape and in people’s attitudes to the landscape. Climate, industry, economics, memory, and political division all leave their marks on landscapes. Alongside the sociopolitical dimension, the aesthetic side of landscape photography is very much to the fore in the exhibition. A space only becomes a place through the stories that are told about it and the way in which the place is “imagined”. How do today’s photographers contribute to our image of our surroundings and to such a thing as a European space? “Europe is ‘here’,” writes Herman Van Rompuy, President of the European Council, in the catalogue. “This book illustrates this, offering us this sense of place.” Works, 160 of them, by 40 photographers, take you – as a visitor or as a reader – on a journey from the North Sea to the Mediterranean.

Constant Permeke: Retrospective NL

Na de laatste grote retrospectieve in Den Haag uit 2004 is het de hoogste tijd voor een hommage aan Constant Permeke, deze eigenzinnige Vlaamse expressionist. Permeke overleed zestig jaar geleden in Oostende. Als geen ander wist hij zich in te leven in het harde leven van vissers en boeren, werkmensen die een intieme band onderhouden met het land en de zee. Door uitvergroting en abstractie zet Permeke archetypen neer met een universele uitstraling. Een indrukwekkende selectie van 130 schilderijen, tekeningen en sculpturen, waaronder tal van topwerken, laat alle facetten van Permekes oeuvre zien: vrouwelijke naakten, land en zee, vissers en boeren in het leven van alledag. Permeke verdient internationaal ruimere erkenning tussen zijn tijdgenoten. BOZAR wil de retrospectieve daarom ook ver buiten de landsgrenzen brengen. Nieuwe landschappen van Thierry De Cordier en naakten van Marlene Dumas benadrukken Permekes actuele waarde.

Après la dernière grande rétrospective qui a eu lieu à La Haye en 2004, il était grand temps de rendre hommage à Constant Permeke, cet expressionniste flamand unique en son genre. Constant Permeke nous a quittés il y a soixante ans, à Ostende. Il savait mieux que quiconque se mettre dans la peau des travailleurs qui ont la vie dure, comme les pêcheurs et les paysans qui entretiennent un lien intime avec la terre et la mer. Par le biais d’agrandissements et d’abstractions, Permeke créait des archétypes au rayonnement universel. Une sélection impressionnante de 130 tableaux, dessins et sculptures, dont plusieurs œuvres d’exception, dévoile au public toutes les facettes de l’œuvre de Permeke : nus féminins, terre et mer, vie quotidienne des pêcheurs et des paysans... Permeke mérite une reconnaissance internationale plus importante. BOZAR souhaite donc que la rétrospective dépasse nos frontières. De nouveaux paysages de Thierry De Cordier et des nus de Marlene Dumas mettent l’accent sur la valeur actuelle des œuvres de Permeke.

The last major retrospective devoted to Constant Permeke took place in The Hague in 2004, so it is high time for a tribute to this distinctive Flemish expressionist. Permeke, who died sixty years ago in Ostend, had a unique empathy with the hard lives of fishermen and peasants, working people with an intimate bond with the land and the sea. By enlargement and abstraction, Permeke created archetypes with a universal character. An impressive selection of 130 paintings, drawings, and sculptures, including many key works, reveals every facet of Permeke’s oeuvre: female nudes, land and sea, fishermen and peasants in their everyday lives. Believing that Permeke deserves wider international recognition alongside his contemporaries, BOZAR intends to take this retrospective far beyond the borders of Belgium. New landscapes by Thierry De Cordier and nudes by Marlene Dumas underline Permeke’s contemporary relevance.

Thierry De Cordier Twee hedendaagse kunstenaars met internationale uitstraling gaan op vraag van de curator de confrontatie aan met Constant Permeke. Net zoals Permeke destijds deed, geven zij een tijdloze dimensie aan de traditie van tekenen en schilderen. Thierry De Cordier (Oudenaarde, °1954) deelt met tal van moderne Vlaamse meesters een voorliefde voor Oostende en het verstilde landschap. Zijn werk is niet aards, maar gebed in het metafysische. De Cordier stelt uiterst selectief tentoon. Speciaal voor de tentoonstelling maakt hij een reeks nieuwe landschapsschilderijen die u bij ons kan ontdekken.

À la demande du commissaire, deux artistes contemporains de renommée internationale sont confrontés à Constant Permeke. Comme Permeke en son temps, ils confèrent une dimension intemporelle à la tradition du dessin et de la peinture. Thierry De Cordier (Audenarde, °1954) partage avec de nombreux maîtres flamands une passion pour Ostende et les paysages calmes. Son travail n’est pas de ce monde, c’est une prière métaphysique. Thierry De Cordier est très sélectif dans le choix de ses expositions. Il a peint spécialement pour la rétrospective une série de nouveaux paysages, que vous pourrez découvrir chez nous.

EN At the request of the curator, two contemporary artists with international reputations enter into a dialogue with Constant Permeke. As Permeke did in his own time, they give a timeless dimension to the tradition of drawing and painting. Thierry De Cordier (born in Oudenaarde in 1954) shares with many modern Flemish masters a love of Ostend and of still landscape. His work is not earthbound, but is rooted in the metaphysical. De Cordier exhibits extremely selectively. Specially for this exhibition, he has painted a series of new landscapes, on display here for the first time.

Marlene Dumas NL Vrouwelijk naakt was eeuwenlang een immens populair thema, waarin mythologische of bijbelse scènes veelal het uitgangspunt vormden. Marlene Dumas (Kaapstad, °1953) maakt een selectie uit haar Magdalena’s en pinups in gewassen inkt en aquarel. Ze idealiseert het lichaam niet, maar toont het open en bloot als bron van verleiding en genot. Foto’s uit seksblaadjes en polaroids staan model. Een passage in Brussel vóór haar retrospectieve in het Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam (herfst 2014) die doorreist naar Tate Modern in Londen en de Fondation Beyeler in Basel.

FR Le nu féminin a toujours été un thème très populaire. Marlene Dumas (Le Cap, °1953) expose une sélection de ses MarieMadeleine et de ses pin-up au lavis d’encre et d’aquarelle. Elle n’idéalise pas le corps, mais le représente clairement comme une source de séduction et de plaisir. Des photos de revues pornographiques et des polaroïds lui servent de modèles. Elle sera de passage à Bruxelles avant la rétrospective qui lui sera consacrée au Stedelijk Museum d’Amsterdam (automne 2014) et qui prendra ensuite la direction de la Tate Modern à Londres et de la Fondation Beyeler à Bâle.

The female nude was a hugely popular theme for centuries, with mythological and Biblical scenes usually forming the starting point. Marlene Dumas (born in Cape Town in 1953) has made a selection of her Magdalens and pinups in ink wash and watercolour. Dumas does not idealise the body, but shows it frankly as a source of temptation and pleasure, taking photographs from sex magazines and Polaroid pictures as her models. This Brussels exhibition will be followed by a retrospective in the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam (autumn 2014), which will travel to Tate Modern in London and the Fondation Beyeler in Basel.

Charif Benhelima Polaroids 1998-2012 NL Charif Benhelima (Brussel, °1967) is een Belgische kunstenaar met internationale allure; na tentoonstellingen in Parijs, Berlijn en New York exposeert de fotograaf opnieuw in zijn geboortestad. BOZAR presenteert met trots voor de eerste maal een collectie van 260 Polaroidfoto’s, kunstwerkjes waarin Benhelima’s persoonlijke verhaal zich verweeft met het documentaire beeld. De opstelling van deze collectie in de intieme Blanc & Noir-ruimten, die Horta al voor fotografie had bestemd, zal de bezoeker rechtstreeks meeslepen in de tijdloze sfeer die het werk ademt.

FR Charif Benhelima (Bruxelles, °1967) est un artiste belge de renommée internationale. Après plusieurs expositions à Paris, Berlin et New York, le photographe expose à nouveau dans sa ville natale. BOZAR se réjouit de présenter pour la première fois une collection de 260 photos Polaroïds, véritables petits chefsd’œuvre dans lesquels l’histoire personnelle de Benhelima s’entremêle avec l’image documentaire. L’agencement de cette collection dans les salles intimes Blanc & Noir, que Horta avait dès le début dédiées à la photographie, emporte le visiteur dans l’ambiance intemporelle qui se dégage des œuvres.

Charif Benhelima (Brussels, °1967) is a Belgian artist with international acknowledgements; after exhibitions in Paris, Berlin and New York, the photographer returns to his native city once again. BOZAR is proud to present for the very first time a collection of 260 Polaroid pictures, little works of art in which Benhelima’s personal story intertwines with the documentary image. The presentation of this collection in the intimate Blanc & Noir spaces, that Horta initially intended for exhibiting photographs, will carry along the visitor into the timeless atmosphere that characterises these works.

Hassan Darsi & Faouzi Laatiris Festival DABA Maroc In het kader van het Brusselse festival DABA Maroc nodigt het Paleis voor Schone Kunsten twee hedendaagse Marokkaanse kunstenaars uit. Met behulp van onder meer spiegels, tapijten en tuinen kaart Faouzi Laatiris in zijn installaties de wrede schoonheid van het alledaagse aan. Hassan Darsi verbindt in zijn installaties, interventies, films en beeldhouwwerken het artistieke met het sociale.

EN In the context of the DABA Maroc festival in Brussels, the Centre for Fine Arts has invited two contemporary Moroccan artists. Jules Wabbes (1919-1974) is een van de belangrijkste Belgische meubelontwerpers uit de naoorlogse periode. Hij staat voornamelijk bekend voor zijn bureaumeubilair waarmee hij de kantoren van Glaverbel, Royal Belge en Foncolin inrichtte, maar blijft voorts een onbekende bij het brede publiek. De tentoonstelling brengt voor het eerst een volledig overzicht van zijn werk als meubeldesigner. Van de vroegste modellen zoals de tabouret voor Anna David-Marber tot het meubilair dat hij voor de studentenhuisvesting in Louvainla-Neuve ontwierp. Speciale aandacht gaat naar het Foncolingebouw, waarin Wabbes’ vindingrijkheid ten volle tot haar recht kwam, en naar zijn deelname aan de Triënnale van Milaan in 1957 en 1960. Naast originele tekeningen en foto’s, omvat de tentoonstelling vooral unieke meubelstukken, waaronder verschillende prototypes die voor het eerst aan het publiek worden voorgesteld.

Jules Wabbes (1919-1974) est l’un des plus éminents créateurs belges de meubles de l’aprèsguerre. Principalement connu pour son mobilier de bureau, qui a équipé les locaux de Glaverbel, de la Royale Belge et du Foncolin, il reste malgré tout inconnu du grand public. L’exposition offre pour la première fois un aperçu complet de son travail de designer, de ses premiers modèles, comme le tabouret Anna DavidMarber, au mobilier qu’il a conçu pour les logements d’étudiants de Louvain-la-Neuve. Une attention spéciale est accordée à l’immeuble Foncolin, qui met particulièrement en valeur l’ingéniosité de Jules Wabbes, ainsi qu’à ses participations successives aux Triennales de Milan de 1957 et 1960. En plus de dessins et de tirages originaux, l’exposition présente des meubles uniques, dont plusieurs prototypes sont montrés pour la première fois au public.

EN Jules Wabbes (1919-1974) is one of the leading Belgian furniture designers of the postwar period. He is known above all for his office furniture, with which he fitted out the offices of Glaverbel, Royale Belge, and Foncolin, but remains largely unknown to the general public. For the first time, this exhibition presents a complete overview of his work as a furniture designer, from his earliest models, such as the tabouret designed for Anna David-Marber, to the furniture he created for student accommodation in Louvain-la-Neuve. There is a particular focus on the Foncolin building, in which his inventiveness came fully into its own, and on his participation in the Milan Triennales of 1957 and 1960. In addition to original drawings and photographs, the exhibition includes unique pieces of furniture, including a number of prototypes that are going on public view for the first time.

Vochol: Huichol Art on Wheels NL Deze installatie focust volledig op een groots icoon van de populaire Mexicaanse cultuur; de Vochol is een Volkswagen Kever, gedecoreerd met glaskralen volgens de oude traditie van de Huichol-cultuur in Mexico. Het project brengt de artistieke vindingrijkheid van een van de vele inheemse culturen van Mexico onder de aandacht en toont dat volkskunst in de 21e eeuw nog tot de actualiteit behoort. Een oude traditie smelt samen met een hedendaags icoon tot een folkloristische kleurenexplosie!

FR Cette installation met l'accent sur une icône de la culture populaire mexicaine ; le Vochol est une Coccinelle Volkswagen, décorée de perles de verre, comme le veut la tradition Huichol. Le projet met ainsi en évidence l’une des nombreuses cultures indigènes du Mexique et montre que l’art populaire reste très actuel. Une tradition ancienne fusionne avec une icône contemporaine pour une explosion de couleurs !

EN This installation focuses entirely on a marvellous icon of Mexican popular culture: the Vochol is a Volkswagen Beetle, decorated with glass beads in the age-old tradition of Mexico’s Huichol culture. The project highlights the artistic ingenuity of one of Mexico’s many indigenous cultures and shows that popular art is still topical in the 21st century. The iconic old goes hand in hand with the iconic new in a folkloric explosion of colour!

Sins and Miracles NL Pegados y Milagros of Sins and Miracles, de titel van het album van de bekende Mexicaanse zangeres Lila Downs, vormt het vertrekpunt van deze uitdagende expo. Vijftien hedendaagse Mexicaanse kunstenaars stellen hun versie voor van de traditionele votiefschilderijen. Die populaire kleine schilderijen werden gemaakt om een religieuze figuur te bedanken voor een mirakel. De actuele herwerkingen hiervan worden tentoongesteld samen met een unieke selectie historische stukken, uit zowel particuliere als openbare collecties, daterend uit het midden van de 19e eeuw tot heden. Een artistieke confrontatie die misschien wel nieuwe mirakels zal opleveren.

FR Pegados y Milagros ou Sins and Miracles, le titre de l’album d’une chanteuse mexicaine très connue, Lila Downs, constitue le point de départ de cette exposition provocante. Quinze artistes mexicains contemporains présentent leur version des peintures votives traditionnelles. Ces petites peintures populaires étaient destinées à remercier une figure religieuse pour un miracle. Ces réinterprétations actuelles seront exposées et accompagnées d'une sélection unique de pièces historiques qui proviennent de collections privées et publiques, remontant parfois au milieu du XIXe siècle. Une confrontation artistique qui pourrait susciter des expériences miraculeuses.

EN Pegados y Milagros ou Sins and Miracles, the title of the album of one of Mexican’s famous singers, Lila Downs, formed the inspiration for this provocative exhibition. Fifteen contemporary Mexican artists present their versions of the traditional votif paintings. These popular small paintings were made to express gratitude to religious figures that made a miracle happen. These contemporary reinterpretations will be exhibited together with a unique selection of the original historical pieces, both from private and public collections, dating from the mid-19th century to the present. An artistic confrontation that just might make new miracles happen.

Bijna 30 jaar na de laatste Europese Watteau-retrospectieve in het Louvre organiseert het Paleis voor Schone Kunsten van Brussel samen met het Palais des Beaux-Arts de Lille een tentoonstelling over deze grote Franse schilder van begin 18e eeuw. Dit wordt een bijzondere kans om opnieuw kennis te maken met het schitterende, maar door zijn vroege overlijden beperkte oeuvre. Antoine Watteau brak met de regels van het classicisme en kondigt zo de grote maatschappelijke veranderingen van de 18e eeuw aan. Vaak liet hij zich daarbij op sleeptouw nemen door de muziek. Maar liefst een derde van Watteaus schilderijen verbeelden muzikale scènes. Om de ogenschijnlijke afstanden tussen de eeuwen en tussen de verschillende kunstuitingen te overbruggen, stappen twee internationaal vermaarde artiesten mee in dit avontuur: dirigent-klavecinist William Christie en schilder Michaël Borremans. Zij benadrukken het multidisciplinaire karakter van de tentoonstelling en de actualiteitswaarde van Watteaus oeuvre.

Près de 30 ans après la dernière rétrospective européenne consacrée à Antoine Watteau au Louvre, le Palais des BeauxArts de Bruxelles organise avec le Palais des Beaux-Arts de Lille une exposition sur ce grand peintre français du début du XVIIIe siècle. Une occasion unique de redécouvrir son œuvre éblouissante, mais assez restreinte du fait de son décès précoce. Antoine Watteau s’est affranchi des règles du classicisme, annonçant ainsi les grands changements sociaux du XVIIIe siècle. Il s’est souvent laissé guider par la musique. Pas moins d'un tiers de ses tableaux représentent des scènes musicales. Pour surmonter les différences flagrantes d’époque et d’expression artistique, nous embarquons deux artistes de renommée internationale dans l’aventure : le chef d’orchestre et claveciniste William Christie et le peintre Michaël Borremans. Ils soulignent l’aspect pluridisciplinaire de l’exposition et la valeur actuelle de l’œuvre de Watteau.

EN Almost 30 years after the last European Watteau retrospective in the Louvre, the Brussels Centre for Fine Arts and its counterpart in Lille are organising an exhibition devoted to this great French painter of the early 18th century. The exhibition offers an exceptional opportunity to rediscover his brilliant oeuvre – sadly limited by the painter’s early death. Antoine Watteau broke with the rules of Classicism, heralding the great social transformations of the 18th century. He often let himself be swept along by music and at least a third of his paintings depict musical scenes. In order to bridge the apparent gulf between different centuries and forms of artistic expression, two internationally renowned artists are participating in this adventure: the conductor and harpsichordist William Christie and the painter Michaël Borremans. They stress the exhibition’s multidisciplinary approach and the relevance of Watteau’s oeuvre to our own time.

Na grote solotentoonstellingen in het Metropolitan in New York, de Pinakothek in München en het kunstmuseum in Leipzig organiseert BOZAR EXPO de eerste expo in België van deze belangrijke, internationaal vermaarde voortrekker van de Neue Leipziger Schule. Neo Rauch (Leipzig, °1960) staat bekend om zijn raadselachtige, ogenschijnlijk verhalende schilderijen. Mensen zijn met iets onbestemds in de weer, ze lijken niet helemaal te passen in de omgeving. Rauch ontwikkelde een hoogstpersoonlijke stijl, een mix van sociaal realisme, surrealistisch aandoende abstractie en invloeden uit popart en strips. Herinneringen aan de DDR lijken de droomachtige composities te bevolken. “Mijn schilderijen hebben iets vitaals, als een dier, een levend ding”, zegt Rauch. “Je hoeft ze niet te begrijpen, alleen te voelen dat dit schepsel, in de hoogst mogelijke graad, vrede heeft met zichzelf.”. Na het publiekssucces van de Luc Tuymans-tentoonstelling wil BOZAR het Belgische publiek nu kennis laten maken met deze gelijkgestemde artiest uit Duitsland die gebruik maakt van een heel persoonlijke beeldentaal.

FR Après de grandes expositions solo au Metropolitan de New York, à la Pinacothèque de Munich et au Musée d’art de Leipzig, BOZAR EXPO organise la première exposition en Belgique consacrée à ce fameux pionnier de la Neue Leipziger Schule, très populaire sur la scène internationale. Neo Rauch (Leipzig, °1960) est connu pour ses tableaux énigmatiques et, en apparence, narratifs. Ses personnages sont toujours vaguement occupés, ils semblent hors contexte. Neo Rauch a développé un style très personnel, qui mélange réalisme social, abstraction teintée de surréalisme et influences du pop art et de la B.D. Des souvenirs de la RDA semblent peupler ses compositions oniriques. « Mes tableaux ont quelque chose de vital, comme un animal, un être vivant », explique Rauch. « Il n’y a pas besoin de les comprendre, il faut seulement sentir que cette créature est, au plus haut degré possible, en paix avec elle-même. » Après le succès de l’exposition de Luc Tuymans, BOZAR souhaite désormais faire découvrir au public belge un artiste allemand de la même veine, qui utilise un langage visuel très personnel.

Following major solo exhibitions in the Metropolitan in New York, the Pinakothek in Munich, and the Leipzig museum of art, BOZAR EXPO presents the first exhibition in Belgium of work by this internationally popular artist, a key pioneer of the Neue Leipziger Schule. Neo Rauch (born in Leipzig in 1960) is known for his puzzling, seemingly narrative paintings. The people in them are busy with something or other; they don’t seem to entirely fit in with their surroundings. Rauch has developed a highly individual style, a mix of social realism, abstraction with a surrealist touch, and influences from pop art and comic strips. His dreamlike compositions seem to be peopled by memories of the GDR. “My paintings have something vital about them, like an animal, a living thing,” says Rauch. “You don’t have to understand them, just to feel that this creation, to the greatest possible extent, is at peace with itself.” Following the success with Belgian exhibitiongoers of the Luc Tuymans exhibition, BOZAR is keen to introduce them to this German artist, a kindred spirit with a highly individual visual idiom.

Francis Bacon’s Studio Contemporary Irish Art NL Francis Bacons onvoltooide doeken, schilderijen en archiefmateriaal uit zijn atelier gaan de dialoog aan met werk van hedendaagse Ierse kunstenaars. De tentoonstelling haalt thema’s aan als de mondiale ethiek, de positie van het zelf in huidige ideologische systemen en het proces van kunst maken. De expo put uit de rijke collecties van het Irish Museum of Modern Art en de Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane.

Des œuvres inachevées de Francis Bacon, des peintures et du matériel d'archives provenant de son atelier entrent en dialogue avec des œuvres d'artistes contemporains irlandais. L’exposition véhicule des thèmes tels que la place de l’individu dans les systèmes idéologiques actuels ou le processus de création artistique. L'exposition puise dans les importantes collections de l'Irish Museum of Modern Art et de la Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane.

Francis Bacon's studio material, unfinished canvases and paintings engage a dialogue with contemporary Irish practice. The exhibition mediates topics such as global ethics, the position of the self in current ideological systems and the process of art making. The show draws on the impressive collections of the Irish Museum of Modern Art and the Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane.

Valérie Mannaerts Parallel met de retrospectieve Giorgio Morandi nodigt BOZAR EXPO Valérie Mannaerts uit met recent werk. Mannaerts (Brussel, °1974) breidt het collagemedium uit naar ruimtelijke objecten. Ze stelt vragen bij de relatie tussen organische en anorganische vormen, de autonomie van objecten en de verhalen die erin weerklinken. Met uiteenlopende materialen maakt ze hybride, weerbarstige vormen. Een onmisbare afspraak voor wie de jonge Belgische kunstscène wil volgen.

FR Parallèlement à la rétro-spective portant sur Giorgio Morandi, BOZAR EXPO invite Valérie Mannaerts à présenter ses œuvres récentes. Mannaerts (Bruxelles, °1974) applique la technique du collage aux objets en trois dimensions. Elle questionne la relation entre les formes organiques et inorganiques, l’autonomie des objets et les histoires qui résonnent en eux. Avec des matériaux divers, elle crée des formes hybrides et rebelles. Un rendez-vous incontournable pour ceux qui s'intéressent à la jeune création artistique belge.

Giorgio Morandi NL De tot de essentie teruggebrachte stillevens van Giorgio Morandi (1890-1964) behoren tot de iconen van de moderne kunst. Oorspronkelijk werkte hij in de geest van de Italiaanse traditie. Zijn niet-aflatende zoektocht en doorgedreven experimenten, o.m. met het futurisme, brachten hem tot zijn typische raadselachtige schilderijen en tekeningen. Aan de hand van een uitgekiende selectie werken uit privéverzamelingen en Europese kunstinstellingen neemt Maria Cristina Bandera, Morandi-specialiste bij uitstek, de bezoeker mee in zijn universum. Tot vandaag blijft Morandi kunstenaars, schrijvers en filmmakers fascineren. Een van hen is filmmaker Michelangelo Antonioni, die in zijn werk tot een gelijkaardige verstilling kwam. Tijdens de zomer vormen Morandi en Antonioni een gedroomde double bill.

Grâce à une rigoureuse sélection d’œuvres provenant d’institutions européennes mais aussi de collections privées, Maria Cristina Bandera, spécialiste de Morandi, entraîne le visiteur dans son univers. Aujourd’hui encore, Morandi continue de fasciner les artistes, les écrivains et les réalisateurs, dont Michelangelo Antonioni, qui arrive à un même niveau d’apaisement dans ses films. Durant l'été 2013, Morandi et Antonioni forment un tandem de rêve.

EN The still lifes of Giorgio Morandi (1890-1964), reduced to their essence, are iconic works of modern art. At first, Morandi worked in the spirit of the Italian tradition. His constant searching and intensive experimentation – for example, with futurism – resulted in his characteristically enigmatic paintings and drawings. Via a careful selection of works from private collections and European art institutions, Maria Cristina Bandera, Morandi specialist par excellence, takes the visitor into the artist’s world. In our own time, Morandi continues to fascinate artists, writers, and film-makers. One of these is the film-maker Michelangelo Antonioni, who arrived at a similar immobility in his work. Over the summer 2013 Morandi and Antonioni will form a dream double bill.

Young Belgian Painters Award 2013 NL Sinds 1950 plaatst deze befaamde wedstrijd jonge Belgische kunstenaars in de kijker. Een professionele jury kent opnieuw vier prijzen toe voor nieuw werk. Het concours is het equivalent van de Britse Turner Prize, de Franse Prix Marcel Duchamp en de Nederlandse Vincent Award. Bekende laureaten als Pierre Alechinsky, Ann Veronica Janssens en Hans Op de Beeck geven de internationale dimensie aan.

FR Depuis 1950, ce prix de renom place de jeunes artistes belges sous les projecteurs. Un jury professionnel décernera de nouveau quatre prix à des œuvres inédites. Ce concours est l’équivalent du Turner Prize britannique, du Prix Marcel Duchamp français et du Vincent Award néerlandais. De célèbres lauréats comme Pierre Alechinsky, Ann Veronica Janssens et Hans Op de Beeck donnent à ce prix sa dimension internationale.

This famous competition has turned the spotlight on young Belgian artists ever since 1950. A professional jury will once again award four prizes for new work. The award is Belgium’s equivalent of the Turner Prize in the UK, the Prix Marcel Duchamp in France, and the Vincent Award in the Netherlands. Michelangelo Antonioni Voor het eerst presenteert het Paleis voor Schone Kunsten in samenwerking met CINEMATEK een grote tentoonstelling gewijd aan een filmmaker, namelijk Michelangelo Antonioni. Hoog tijd want de esthetiek van de film is al lang in ons collectieve geheugen doorgedrongen. De films van Antonioni zijn vaak een bewegende verbeelding van inspiratiebronnen als Pollock, Rothko, De Chirico en Morandi (gelijktijdig te zien in een ander circuit). Personages houden zich op in een verstild universum en worstelen met angst en vertwijfeling. Een reis dus door Antonioni’s modernistische beeldtaal en een diepgaande reflectie op een dito levensstijl. Tijdens de tentoonstelling toont CINEMATEK een retrospectieve van zijn films.

Pour la première fois, le Palais des Beaux-Arts présente, en collaboration avec la CINEMATEK, une grande exposition consacrée à un réalisateur : Michelangelo Antonioni. Il était temps, car l’esthétique du cinéma fait partie de notre mémoire collective. Les films d'Antonioni sont souvent des représentations animées d'œuvres d'artistes tels que Pollock, Rothko, De Chirico et Morandi (à découvrir en même temps dans un autre circuit). Les personnages évoluent dans un univers apaisé et luttent contre la peur et le désespoir. Nous vous proposons donc un voyage dans le langage visuel moderne d’Antonioni et une réflexion approfondie sur son style de vie. For the first time, the Centre for Fine Arts has joined forces with CINEMATEK to present a major exhibition devoted to a film-maker, Michelangelo Antonioni. It was high time, as the aesthetic of film has long penetrated into our collective memory. Antonioni's films are often a depiction in movement of such sources of inspiration as Pollock, Rothko, De Chirico and Morandi (the work of the latter can be seen at the same time in a different circuit). Characters operating in a static world wrestle with fear and despair. Visitors will be offered a journey through Antonioni’s modernist visual idiom and an indepth reflection on a modernist lifestyle. During the exhibition CINEMATEK will screen a retrospective of his films.

On Kawara - One Million Years NL One Million Years is een van de bekendste werken van de conceptuele kunstenaar On Kawara (°1933). Hij tekende één miljoen jaar op in 20 volumes. In een afgesloten glazen ruimte in de Hortahal lezen een man en een vrouw om beurten voor uit de boekdelen [Past] and [Future]. Het gehele proces wordt live opgenomen en documenteert zo het verstrijken van de tijd. Voor het eerst te horen in België!

Dans le Hall Horta, dans un espace en verre fermé, un homme et une femme lisent à tour de rôle le contenu des livres [Past] et [Future]. BO ZAR ARCHI TECTURE Al voor het zesde seizoen op rij brengt BOZAR ARCHITECTURE samen met A+ Belgisch tijdschrift voor architectuur een uitdagend programma van architectuurtentoonstellingen en internationale lezingen. In het nieuwe seizoen wordt het spectrum verbreed met een retrospectieve van de meubeldesigner Jules Wabbes. De reeks monografische oeuvretentoonstellingen wordt voorgezet met een expo over de eerste Vlaamse bouwmeester b0b Van Reeth. Tot slot tonen de verschillende jonge Belgische architectenbureaus die de afgelopen vier seizoenen aan bod kwamen in de N|i|c|h|e-reeks, dit jaar voor een laatste keer hun maquettes in de tentoonstelling XX MODELS.

BOZAR ARCHITECTURE et A+ célèbrent ces quatre saisons en publiant le catalogue de ce tour d’horizon et en conviant les 20 bureaux d’architecture ayant participé au projet à rassembler, une dernière fois, les maquettes de leurs réalisations.

North-South Rail Connection Noord-Zuidverbinding | Jonction Nord-Midi NL De Noord-Zuidverbinding roept tegenstrijdige reacties op: technisch hoogstandje, litteken in de stad, troef of trauma? De verbinding, de drukste spoorlijn van het land, heeft haar verzadigingspunt bereikt. Met het oog op de toekomst van dit ondergrondse stukje Brussel, van doorslaggevend belang voor de stedelijke mobiliteit, werden verschillende architectenbureaus uitgenodigd om zich over het vraagstuk te buigen.

FR Prouesse technique, balafre urbaine, atout ou cicatrice, la Jonction Nord-Midi inspire des visions plurielles. Tronçon ferroviaire le plus dense du pays, la jonction est aujourd’hui proche de la saturation. Plusieurs bureaux d’architecture ont été invites à envisager l’avenir de cet axe souterrain mais essentiel à la mobilité et de la vie bruxelloise.

EN Variously seen as technical exploit, an urban wound, an asset, or a scar, the link constructed a few decades ago between the North and South railway stations in Brussels continues to divide opinions today. Belgium’s busiest section of railway line, the connection is now close to its saturation point. With a view to planning for the future of this underground but essential aspect of mobility and life in Brussels, a number of architectural practices have been invited to take a look at the issues.

b0b Van Reeth NL De carrière van architect b0b Van Reeth overspant nu een halve eeuw. De tentoonstelling volgt het parcours van b0b Van Reeth als ontwerper, van de projecten uit zijn studententijd tot de meest recente productie binnen het samenwerkingsverband AWG met onder meer de abdij van WestVleteren en het Museum van Mechelen. De tentoonstelling wordt geheel samengesteld met historische documenten, tekeningen, modellen en foto's.

La carrière de l’architecte b0b Van Reeth couvre aujourd’hui un demi-siècle. L'exposition retrace son parcours de concepteur par ce biais de documents historiques, dessins, maquettes et photos de ses projets d’étudiants jusqu’à ses productions récentes telles que l’abbaye de WestVleteren et le musée de Malines, réalisées au sein de l’association AWG.

EN The career of architect b0b Van Reeth goes back half a century. This new exhibition explores the architect’s body of work through historical documents, drawings, models and photos, from his student projects to recent productions like Westvleteren Abbey and Mechelen Museum with AWG Architecten.

Brussels Lille Artline NL

Dankzij de ontmoeting tussen het Palais des Beaux-Arts de Lille en het Paleis voor Schone Kunsten van Brussel gaan Rijsel en het Brussels Hoofdstedelijk Gewest een nieuwe, dynamische culturele samenwerking tegemoet. In september 2012 gaat een jaar vol wetenschappelijke samenwerking en gecombineerde programma’s van start. Fables du paysage flamand in het PBA van Rijsel onthult het wonderlijke en fantastische karakter van de Vlaamse landschappen in de 16e eeuw, die vandaag nog steeds verbijstering en vragen opwekken. In de lente van 2013 opent BOZAR de deuren voor een tentoonstelling over schilder Antoine Watteau, in combinatie met een muzikaal eerbetoon aan de man. Watteau creëerde een nieuw soort schilderkunst: het fête galante dat zich afspeelt in de natuur, de perfecte gelegenheid voor ontboezemingen, hofmakerij en gokspelen allerhande. In het kader van deze gecombineerde programmering zal het Belgische en het Franse publiek tussen beide landen heen en weer kunnen reizen, gestimuleerd door een complementaire programmatie en aantrekkelijke tariefkortingen.

Une nouvelle dynamique de coopération culturelle entre Lille et la Région de Bruxelles-Capitale est née de la rencontre d’institutions culturelles bruxelloises et lilloises, et notamment des deux palais des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles et de Lille. Une année de coopération scientifique et de programmations croisées débutera en septembre 2012. Families | Familles | Families NL Uiteraard blijven families niet op hun honger zitten! In de eerste plaats zijn er de BOZARSUNDAYS, met elke zondag een ander aanbod. Terwijl de kinderen een creatief atelier volgen, kun je zelf kiezen tussen een concert of een rondleiding in de tentoonstellingen of in het gebouw. Bovendien organiseren we jaarlijks twee Family Days, in functie van de tentoonstellingen, maar ook ontdekkingstochten in familieverband, stages… Gelegenheid te over om plezier te beleven aan de kunst die in de expo’s wordt getoond!

De BOZARBRASSERIE ging open in december 2010 en werd getrouw gerestaureerd in de zuiverste art-decostijl. De open keuken naar de nieuwste mode is het evenbeeld van die in La Paix, het bekroonde restaurant waar chefkok David Martin eveneens aan het fornuis staat. Op het menu: een brasseriekeuken nieuwe stijl, in de houtoven gegrild vlees (met gegarandeerde herkomstbenaming) en formules op maat van het cultuurhuis waarin het onderdak vindt.

Rondleidingen (max. 15 personen per gids) Voor groepsbezoeken dient u te reserveren en moet de betaling 3 weken vóór het bezoek worden uitgevoerd. Zo niet wordt het bezoek geannuleerd. De kaartjes kunnen de dag zelf worden afgehaald aan de onthaaldesk ‘groepen’. Het Paleis voor Schone Kunsten verleent geen toestemming aan externe gidsen voor wandelvoordrachten.

Visites guidées (max .15 personnes par guide) La réservation est obligatoire pour les visites de groupe des expositions. Le paiement doit être effectif au plus tard 3 semaines avant la date de la visite. Faute de paiement, la visite sera annulée. Les billets sont à retirer le jour de la visite à l’accueil « groupes » de l’exposition concernée. Le Palais des Beaux-Arts n’accepte pas les guides-conférenciers externes.
