Stepping out on the town. We make what you love about your life even better. People love lots of things about Plymouth Place. Like our long history. We’ve been a stable part of this community nearly 70 years. In that time, La Grange has grown up with us — and all around us. And we look forward to continue growing together. And when you live here, you’ll find a lot to love, too. Like tying up your tennis shoes and walking to restaurants, bakeries, shops, parks — even the Metra Station. And more, just outside your door.

Learn more about us and our neighborhood at plymouthplace.org/walkscore. And if you’d like to drive on over to visit us, you’ll find handy directions there, too.

To know us is to love us.

Welcome to Celebrating Seniors Week 2014! It is my hope that many of us celebrate seniors on a regular basis — as it often starts with our own grandparents, parents, uncles and aunts. But how often are older adults in our communities celebrated collectively — the seniors that play such a vital role in our towns as volunteers, employees, leaders, friends and loyal supporters? For many years, Aging Care Connections has been searching for the right opportunity to celebrate older adults during Older Americans Month in May. Last year, thanks to the help of our many partners, we took our first step to celebrate seniors in an organized, intentional way —through Celebrating Seniors Week. Your response was overwhelming. More than 600 adults participated in the free programs offered during the week. Community organizations, agencies and businesses partnered together to create events to educate older adults, as well as keep them active (and well fed!). Nominations poured into our office to recognize seniors who made the rankings of “60 Over 60,” individuals honored for their commitment to community service and others. The excitement was contagious and encouraged us to plan for this year’s celebration. Thanks to a dedicated committee and the support of Community Memorial Foundation, the celebration continues. As you look through this publication, we invite you to fill your calendar with events created to celebrate older adults. Please use the information provided — stories, phone numbers and advertisers — as an aging needs resource for you and your loved ones. Aging Care Connections is the agency dedicated to serving the aging community in which you reside. We are ready to help with the critical issues seniors and their families face — access to basic needs through care assessments, benefits information, caregiver support, help with transitioning home after a hospital stay and transportation assistance — with a majority of our programs offered free of charge. Please contact Aging Care Connections at (708) 354-1323 for answers to all questions related to aging. We will respond to meet your individual needs. Thank you for joining with me to celebrate seniors, embrace aging and support the older adult population in our communities.

Volunteers are lifeblood of our organization “Our organization helps people to cope. Aging Care Connections cares about seniors, and so do I.”

Aging Care Connections could use more people like Rosemary Suchor. A former employee of the agency, Rosemary returned last year — this time, as a volunteer. “I like to work,” Suchor said of the simple reason she spends two mornings a week at the Aging Care Connections facility. Rosemary also enjoys knowing that she is helping the organization to keep as a non-profit organization that relies on the government, United Way, foundations and private donations for financial support, volunteers are vital to Aging Care Connections. “In 2013, volunteers devoted 4,618 hours to Aging Care Connections. Given that the value of a volunteer hour in Illinois is $22.17, this translates to $102,381.06,” said Niki Chibucos, director of Development and Public Relations. Chibucos said the agency’s employees just can’t do all that needs to be done. For example, volunteers allow Aging Care Connections to put out mailings that inform people of their services and solicit financial help. “That’s critical,” Niki said. Chibucos said volunteers are needed to perform office tasks

of Aging Care Connections who now volunteers for the organization.

such as filing, copying and data entry. Also needed are people to work the front desk. Front desk receptionists are asked to work one four-hour shift each week, while those performing office tasks will work between two and four hours each week. Yet another group of volunteers is busy working on the 13th Annual Sports Ball Fundraising Gala, set for May 16. The volunteers are busy putting the details together for another successful event. As a senior citizen herself, Suchor isn’t alone among the volunteers at Aging Care Connections and other area organizations. In its Feb. 24 newsletter, the NonProfitTimes reported that in 2012, Americans 65 and older donated nearly twice as many hours per person than the population as a whole. At nearly 86, Suchor said it is important to keep the mind and body active. By helping out at Aging Care Connections, she not

only is keeping herself active, she also is helping others to get the help they need. This time of year, Suchor helps by greeting those who come to have their taxes done by AARP volunteers. She’s performed plenty of other jobs, too. “They call me ambidextrous,” she said, because she’s willing and able to help out wherever she is needed. Suchor, who lives just a short walk from Aging Care Connections, said the organization is a good neighbor to so many seniors, pairing them with the services and benefits they need. “Our organization helps people to cope,” she said. “Aging Care Connections cares about seniors, and so do I.” To offer your time to Aging Care Connections, contact Chibucos at (708) 354-1323, Ext. 226. Volunteers must be 18 and older and available to work on weekdays at the La Grange facility.

The mission of Interfaith Community Partners is to maximize the independence and well-being of older adults by enabling connections with others in their community. Benefits program gets answers for seniors BY SANDY BOSCH Communications Manager, Home Helpers

Martha was finding it difficult to get by on her $300 monthly income. And although she knew there were resources available to help her, she wasn’t sure where to find them. So Martha turned to the experts at Aging Care Connections, where Benefits Advocate Gladys Thurmond helped her gain access not only to additional Social Security dollars, but also to help paying for food, utilities and healthcare. “She gained about $700 per month,” in savings and benefits, said Thurmond. Thurmond and her team of trained volunteers assist and educate seniors and their caregivers about available benefits and services. Aging Care Connections’ experts help seniors find the right Medicare plan, access Medicaid benefits and navigate the Social Security system, among other things. Hundreds of seniors and caregivers get free help from the agency’s benefits program every week. While many who turn to the Aging Care benefits program need help paying for basic needs, others just need help navigating the ever-changing world of health care coverage. “It’s hard to keep up,” Thurmond said. Thanks to the Benefits Program and its staff of trained experts, area seniors don’t have to. That’s the job of Aging Care Connections. Thurmond said many seniors come to her in the months prior to retirement for help with healthcare SEE BENEFITS, PAGE 13

Treatment of mental illness has evolved with more effective treatment and medications that may reduce symptoms significantly. However, seniors’ exposure to these changes and new treatment options have not kept pace. Many seniors have experienced feelings of shame when a family member has a mental illness.
