It’s the journey that teaches you a lot about your destination. Many of you may have noticed that we combined our winter and spring program guide into one publication. What you see in your hands is to remind you of all the great programming and events we have going on this spring, while serving as an opportunity for you to mark your calendars and prepare for summer with our events, programs and camps. Our team has carefully and strategically prepared fantastic events for you and your family this spring. I hope to see you at Parkie’s Egg Hunt at Pelican Harbor on March 30, or take part in our spring break nature camps at Hidden Oaks Nature Center starting March 26. We have program offerings that serve all ages and interests like Messy Toddlers for our youngsters to traveling to see the Blue Man Group for our adults. Being an employee of Bolingbrook Park District for over 20 years now, I can tell you with confidence that this is the most excited I’ve been for a summer. With the increase in participation of our free events like Visit Your Local Park, Summer Concert Series and outdoor movies in 2017, I feel confident that you, the residents of our community are living and breathing our mission just as we had in mind when we created it.
LETTER FROM THE
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
We continue to evaluate all our programs and events and make enhancements to them to better your experience. This year, Camp Alotta Fun will make the transition from the Bolingbrook Recreation & Aquatic Complex to the Annerino Community Center. We feel this will provide a positive impact for both the parents and kids. For the campers, there will be more available to them, such as our indoor climbing wall, two playgrounds, t-ball and softball fields, tennis courts, basketball courts, skate parks and acres of green space to run and play. For parents, the Annerino Community Center parking lot provides a better flow for traffic for easier drop-off/pick-up. It has more rooms inside for structured activities and protection against weather, dedicated space for down time and parent meetings, and easy access to the highway for parents and our field trips. Our staff has worked hard to craft a summer schedule that will be sure to leave a positive impact on you. We hope you take advantage of what you see in this publication. If there’s something that you’d like to try that you don’t see in the following pages, please feel free to contact me at the information below. We are always looking into ways to improve our services. I hope to see you in the coming seasons the park district, whether you’re visiting your favorite park, taking a dip in the pool at Pelican Harbor or learning a new skill with a loved one.

By Justin Waters She has a smile that can light up a room and exuberance unlike anyone I have met before. As we talked in LifeStyles Fitness Center at the Bolingbrook Recreation & Aquatic Complex, it was apparent her social network is large. Every few minutes someone she knew would stop over to say hello. Something about her warmth and personality brings out the smile in anyone that crosses her path. We sat

For 10 years or so, she sat in her house, feeling sorry for herself and just “existing” as she called it. “At one point, during all this, I was taking 4-5 pain pills in the morning. With the encouragement from a friend, Gloria began to discover a whole new way of life and it all started with a bucket list. “My husband is deceased, my children are all grown and I’m in this house all by myself. I kept telling myself I need to be as healthy as I can. I don’t want to be dependant on them (my daughters) as I get older.” Gloria over-

The next step was figuring out where to begin. “First thing that I decided was ‘What if I needed to swim to save a grandchild?” At 63 years of age, Gloria decided it was time to learn to swim. As one of 11 children growing up in Spencer, Oklahoma, her parents couldn’t afford to have their children participate 16

She then made the jump to five days a week after some encouragement from her coach. Every day she would get up at 5:00 am to take advantage of the quietness of the pool at that time of day. “I loved it. Everybody here was a senior, like me. She decided to take one of the park district’s belly dancing classes. “I always considered myself a dancer. Never took lessons or anything. I actually had some videos at home of belly dancing. I took the classes by myself, and then I got my daughters to do it and we were in two recitals.” This version of Gloria was a long way from the version sitting at home living on pain killers.

Help Your Body and Mind - Grow and Eat Your Own Food! Written by: Elizabeth Blake, CPT, FNS - Personal Trainer, Health Coach, Nutrition Specialist at LifeStyles Fitness Center
Have you ever tasted a sweeter fruit or a crisper, more flavorful vegetable than one grown fresh from a home garden? It doesn’t have to be complicated when you learn the basics and choose from among some of the most nutritious of foods. Broccoli, long known for its elite status as a superfood, contains phytochemicals that help reduce the risk of many diseases. Broccoli grows best in a sunny area in the fall and spring. Carrots and sweet potatoes are vibrant and richly-colorful root vegetables that are loaded with fiber. They pack a nutritional punch with beta-carotene that help to reduce the risk of many degenerative eye diseases and plant sterols that help to lower cholesterol. Plant sweet potatoes after the last spring frost when soil can stay warm. Carrots grow best in cooler temperatures during the early spring or late fall. Have a sweet tooth? Figs contain numerous minerals such as potassium and calcium that have cardiovascular-protective properties. Figs grow quickly in the garden or in containers if you’re short on space. Garlic fights infections with compounds that have antioxidant, antifungal, and antibiotic properties. It also helps in reducing blood pressure and keeping carcinogens at bay. Plant cloves in mid-autumn in a sunny location.
If you’ve ever needed the space to grow you own food, look no further! Hidden Oaks Nature has garden plots available at the Community Gardens. Reserve your spot and start gardening! Heck, if you need more information, the nature center offers a FREE Successful Vegetable Gardening class on April 14. Get out there, turn your thumb green and grow your own garden and enjoy the benefits! Hidden Oaks Conservation Area . 419 Trout Farm Road . 630.739.2600 . ONE MOM’S JOURN TO BUILDING A
FOR
COMMUN
HER SON by Justin Waters
“He’s the sass to the sweetness of our house,” said Shaily Escamilla with a smile as she described her five-year old son, Xavier. “He’s spunky, independent, sweet and compassionate, yet naughty and mischievous.” It is hard to imagine the mischievous side of Xavier as you watch him in his Ninja Zone class where he is lazer focused on his instructor. Once Xavier came through the double doors, it was clear to see Xavier is a happy, rambunctious, curious young man with a strong community of friends. His eyes twinkled, as he waved goodbye to his instructor and talked to his friend about what they did in class. Xavier was in his element. This confident five-year-old could capture your heart.
community. With Xavier’s two older brothers ( Jose, age 14 and Iggie, age 10) out of the house at school during the day, she began to look for something for Xavier to do. “It would have been really easy to have him stay at home and play and watch TV, but I’m too busy-bodied of a person to sit. It’s nice to wake up and have a routine. Get him up, get him ready, go out of the house and do an activity, come home and have lunch and nap,” said Shaily.
At first, it was swim lessons at three months old, then gymnastics and Music Together at six months old, Ninja Zone and preschool, all through the Bolingbrook Park District. “I’m a big believer in my town. Bolingbrook is home, we’re going Xavier’s confidence and com- to take advantage of everymunity of friends is the re- thing. Our park district is so sult of his mom’s efforts to amazing. It is one of the main be a part of the Bolingbrook reasons we moved here.” said 32
Shaily. “Most of my friends have been established through the park district. Xavier has been doing programs with his friend Sean since they were in Puddle Jumpers together, then preschool, then t-ball and now Ninja Zone. Sean’s mom and I have become great friends through the process as well.”

All Smiles, All the Time - Xavier, age 5 enjoys all aspects of park district programming.
The importance of friendship and community is an important lesson Shaily was hoping her son would experience. Xavier is kind to his friends and peers and offers to take turns to those that are new in class. He is building his own community in his preschool class. His teachers shared with his mom that Xavier often helps kids that are
upset in class by making them feel comfortable in their new environment. Xavier has learned a great life lesson of being a friend to another in need. You can see the pride in Shaily’s eyes as she shares her story. “I feel that’s a great quality and he has that and that’s because he’s grown up in the park district. The programs here are great for him
being social, teaching him how to be a good friend, be a good listener and even at home, to get up have a good routine and have somewhere to go and something to do.” From what started as a simple routine for Xavier and his mom, has blossomed into friendships and a community that will last them for years. 33

A Lifetime Dedicated To Keeping Bolingbrook Parks Safe By Justin Waters It was a cloudy day in July when Dave Cluts and I hopped into his “Office on Wheels” and looked at the day’s checklist in his daily activity log. It’s an older truck. The cracking leather, grease stains and beat-up work gloves tell you that this truck has seen its fair share. It has the odd combination of papers stacked on an old metal work order clipboard next to an iPad with

a heavy-duty black protective case. Dave seems much more comfortable with his construction pencil, glasses and clipboard compared to scrolling down a screen on his iPad. With his quiet demeanor and gentle smile, Dave prefers getting work done the old school way. It is easy to understand why, since he has over thirty-five years of getting things done the old school way. “He’s Bolingbrook
Park District’s ‘Mr. Fix-It’,” said Jim Patula, Superintendent of Projects, Planning & Loss Prevention. Dave knew Bolingbrook before Weber Road even existed. Bolingbrook Park District has come a long way since Dave started in 1982. As I rode along with Dave, I discovered someone who has a passion for serving the families of Bolingbrook. We stopped at

Winston Woods to complete his inspection of the playground. Dave carefully checked nuts, bolts and virtually every corner of the playground. This is what I expected a Playground Inspector’s day would look like. Then something else happened. Dave struck up a conversation with a resident sitting in the pavilion enjoying the cool summer day. This is where I saw Dave’s personality come to life. Henry, a resident of 25 years, commented how much he has enjoyed touring the parks with his grandson. Dave’s smile got a little
wider. As we headed back to his truck with his lengthy checklist of parks to get done in hand, Dave walked with a sense of pride. “Talking with residents is one of the perks of my job,” said Dave. The job is a big one, and Dave certainly is the man for it. Bolingbrook Park District has 47 playgrounds, covering over 1,000 acres of Bolingbrook. Each playground gets inspected every two weeks throughout the spring, summer and fall and once a month during the winter.
I was shocked to learn how technical the inspection process was. To become a Certified Playground Safety Inspector (CPSI), one must pass the certification program through the National Recreation & Parks Association (NRPA). This consists of two days of classroom work, followed by a half day to complete the exam. Upon completion of the NRPA course, an individual is able to establish a risk reduction program, system of repair, retrofit and removal of hazardous equipment. Dave has worked a number of different jobs during his tenure at Bolingbrook Park District. He’s worked as a custodian, on the mowing crew, was Crew Leader on Ball Fields, and has held his current title as Crew Leader of Parks and Playgrounds since 2009. “It’s been a great place to work. I’ve really learned a lot.” He says he still has a good 5-7 years left before considering retirement. “I get enjoyment out of seeing kids and families using the parks, as long as they don’t get hurt,” he added with a chuckle in his voice.
Dave has anything and everything needed to keep playgrounds safe in his “office on wheels”.
